Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Bane
The man who would become known as only Bane had been an inmate of the Peña Duro prison in Cuba. The prison’s purpose was to incarcerate the toughest, most dangerous felons throughout Central and South America. Peña Duro additionally acted as a testing ground for unscrupulous and inhumane experiments.
An unnamed political dissident, Bane was chosen as a test subject for a secret government project codenamed Project Gilgamesh. The aim of this project was to create super-soldiers with a new ultra-potent steroid called Venom.
Project Gilgamesh fell victim to its own success with Bane using his new-found powers to break free. He stole the Venom formula and fled overseas, evading the authorities with to his greatly enhanced strength, speed and durability. Bane would go on to become a freelance assassin. Eventually Bane built his reputation to the point where he could demand exorbitant fees for his deadly services.
Seeking to eliminate Batman and re-situate himself as the criminal kingpin of Gotham, mobster Rupert Thorne hired Bane.  The mercenary relished the challenge and promised that he would not just defeat Batman, but 'break the Bat' in mind and body.
Bane announced his arrival to Batman by destroying the Batmobile and beating Killer Croc within an inch of his life.  He then kidnapped Robin, ensuring that Batman would arrive at an area of combat of his choosing.  What followed was a tremendous battle and Bane nearly succeeded in breaking the Bat.  Batman’s quick thinking won out, however, as he used a baterang to short-out the regulator that distributed the Venom into Bane’s body.  The foe collapsed after he received a near-fatal overdose of the steroid.
The villain was incarcerated and it turned out that it was he who was broken by the Bat and not the other way around.  Bane would return on subsequent occasions, but he was never able to beat Batman and never reclaimed the fear and notoriety he once possessed.
Actor Henry Silva provided the voice for the villain, appearing in the sixth episode of the second season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Bane.’
