Something people overlook is sewage and garbage disposal. Oftentimes when you flush, toss, and throw away your waste, whether it be produced from your body or used by you, that is the end of the story. Or so you thought… in reality there is a whole journey left for waste products. They go through processes of sanitization, disposal, or build-up.
By build-up I am referring to one example of places like Nepal, that don’t have the resources to properly dispose of their waste and resulting in horrific deaths of young children (dysentery). Sanitation is a necessity in any environment, especially in populated groups like cities where many reside. And it's a privilege to have sanitation and not have to think about where waste goes. The quality of health we have today is all due to proper sanitation, in fact it is what expedited population growths. In countries that rapidly industrialized and developed, sanitation played a large role in assisting the boom of populations.
Sewage and garbage disposal is a public policy issue. Simply the lack of sanitation can evoke the spread of bacteria and diseases, meaning government intervention must step in because it can affect public health. So the government must regulate and appoint policies/laws to implement proper practices for the wellbeing of the people.
People (non-elected citizens) and elected officials should care, because the sanitation process (wastewater management and garbage disposal) is paid by the public dollar. There is definitely an economic down-side to being dirty. The cost of transporting waste to landfills specifically food waste is expensive, $200 million expensive (in NYC). There are also environmental drawbacks like pollution and usage of energy sources to process the waste. Build-up in landfills take up space and places like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an island of garbage twice the size of Texas, is certainly not doing the Earth any favors by existing.
It is a communal issue that involves everyone and simply inefficient to taxpayers. When done right, clean water from wastewater treatment facilities produces clean water and fertilizer product which can return carbon back to soil. That clean water according to Pam Elardo, New York City’s Deputy Commissioner of Environmental Protection contributes to clean water as the main factor for whales returning.
These problems won’t be solved unless people vote for elected officials who care and are willing to make the change. As much as it is an environmental issue it is also a political issue too. Some solutions are providing incentives for not littering/polluting, paying people for recycling, enforcing business to recycle (like a fine or tax break), collecting food waste separately which turns it into natural gas, passing policies banning food waste into landfills from business, etc.
I personally believe the rate of consumption by individuals is at an alarming rate. The American citizen consumes and discards at an astronomical rate that a clean-up crew cannot match, especially with the apathetic attitude towards waste. Controlling sanitation means less disease, protecting citizens, bettering the health of individuals, and cleaner environment. It is an issue most people overlook and it is time for that to stop.
We need to create a culture of cleaning up and the incentive should not be for individual gain because the goal will never be achieved, rather the incentive of a cleaner environment/community for all should be enough. I’ve always enjoyed topics like waste disposal because it’s often overlooked, and listening to Alec Baldwin’s podcast “Here’s The Thing” was insightful. His voice was very soothing with the addition of fun anecdotes from his guests made this episode of the podcast worthwhile. Hearing celebrities talk/care about environmental issues contributes to creating a culture of taking responsibility for the waste we produce.
