Sometimes I pick up my cat and put him by the window if I notice something outside that I think he'd like to see. He normally does like watching the stuff I show him.
So what if toothless did this with hiccup. He knows his rider likes watching dragons be dragony so sometimes he'll pick him up and plop him down somewhere safe to watch things like a molt or a new species.

Silly head canon.
Hiccup knows how to cry very quietly. This comes from not wanting to be found while hiding from other kids on Berk and to not attract his dad's attention at home when growing up because he felt like it would disappoint stoick.
He's a lot better at holding it all in as he ages, but hidden moments under Toothless' wings he cries with shaky shoulders and near silent sobs.

Stupid idea: Viggo introduces hiccup to coffee/tea and the kid gets -addicted- but not cause it wakes him up or anything. Nope it's cause he's one of those people (like me)(or some peeps with ADHD) where it makes his thoughts more focused and not so all over the place. The caffeine makes things clearer and he loves it

New idea to obsess over that has no basis in canon whatsoever other than all the dragon hunters have the same character model
So I've mentioned before that i like to headcanon that the dragon hunters keep their wives and kids back on their home island until a certain age and that's why we dont see anyone the dragon riders age in their ranks.
Im going to go a step further.
What if in Viggo's tribe, premature babies (or runts like they call hiccup) are revered when they survive? What if they are seen as sort of magic/sorcerers that were Seiðr practitioners? able to speak more easily to the gods and use manipulative and divination magic and trained up in those skills.
all that to say, they are highly respected in the hunter community and I'm obsessed with the idea that if they met Hiccup earlier or if Hiccup ended up on the hunter island for a bit there would be some awe and respect there.
They think hes able to bond with dragons due to that magic.
idk just something fun, feel free to run with it!

did we ever get an age for viggo in the show? because honestly hard to pin down just looking at him. Ive seen dudes in highschool who almost looked like him and then I've seen 40 year olds like him.
Mentally, ive always put him late 20s early thirties at the latest 32 and earliest 23.

Things that make me go wild in a httyd fic:
people reacting to Hiccup roaring like a dragon when they dont expect it
hiccup being a dragon queen
dragonese.

silly idea! So the vikings had a varied view of death with a multitude of locations for souls to end up.
What if Hiccup, especially when he was younger, assumed that his soul would not end up with the rest of his tribe.
Valhalla is for warriors, especially those that died in battle. a few might be chosen by freyja to go to Fólkvangr
and hiccup assumes he will end up in Helheim, which isn't terrible but it is separate from his family and tribe forever. or maybe he worried about being sent to Niflheim some times given how negatively his tribe speaks of him all the time before toothless

so! i have a fun little idea for stolen heir. @lirabuswavi
so dragons. they bite and claw people. and lick them if they like them
In my au dragons can leave messages behind through bites and claws. they have scent gland things in their mouths, faces and claws.
So when a dragon bites or claws something, they can leave a message to other dragons there. a warning or good news. Gobbers lost limbs are marked up with scents of "DANGER OMG DANGER NOOOO"
and claw marks on Viggo's neck smell of "pain, pain. avoid."
but there are other things to note other than warnings.
some dragons claw up stones to note where food is plentiful nearby or to let dragons know there is a friend.
Hiccup's leg bite actually smells like a friend marking. it makes dragons hesitate a bit if they get close enough to sniff.
Then hiccup meets toothless and gets soaked in licks and false bites and claw baps. he is soaked in the smell of friend but also in "mine. be nice."

Fun headcanon!
when hiccup gets sick, he gets really really sick. Him being born small means that his immune system is a little messed up. He tends to try and take care of it himself without telling many people about it. This has lead to him flying while sick.
oof.

ive been consuming a lot of How to Train Your Dragon stuff lately, including race to the edge and the books. This has led me to a funky au idea thing. kinda silly and very hiccup focused. and viggo focused. the funniest of bois.
I really like Hiccup being the only one who can speak dragonese in the books and felt like in the shows that they could have used the riders learning dragon calls a little more.
so what i think would be fun is if Hiccup spent a little more time isolating himself with dragons after the first movie, spending most of his time flying and studying all the dragons that had to re-nest because of the death of the Red Death. These dragons who saw him and Toothless take down the Queen have transferred the title and authority over to Hiccup and Toothless.
Hiccup ends up with more dragon mannerisms and language. he is still friendly with the other riders, but still very much a loner. He ends up flying pretty far afield to find new dragons and things that could help dragons.
similar to the show he dresses in more armor, but develops his wings before going past the edge of any of Berks maps like the show. He discovers dragon hunters and traps and starts helping the dragons who he can talk to. He makes prosthetics where he can. He gets some of the other riders involved, but he still spends most of his time alone.
He ends up being the person taken down by Ryker and the hunters rather than Astrid and Stormfly. and also different is that Toothless and Hiccup stay attached.
Its hard for him to get away, because the hunters remove the saddle.
idk how to explain all the vague ideas but I really like the idea of a more feral hiccup messing with viggo.
feral meaning more dragon like. I also like the idea that hiccup talking to the dragons gets viggo to see them as more intelligent than he originally assumed and turning his view point on them earlier. but also seeing how valuable hiccup is.

obsessed with this comment.
what if in the stolen heir au hiccup and dagur just straight up leave?? I can see two different really fun scenarios that occur.
they leave while they are both young when dagurs like 16 and feels old enough to beat the world Hiccup is 13 and a skilled blacksmith that is so so tired. They sail into Viggo's waters and travel from tribe to tribe in that area with their skills and act as helping hands for hire. some how hiccup falls in love with dragons, or maybe has a similar toothless incident. Viggo meets them both at some point, idk
Or~~
2. After hiccup gets toothless when hes like 14 (because i like him being younger than canon for the fun of it) Movie events happen except no astrid to stop him and he flies off. he goes to berserker island, not wanting to flee the archepelego without telling his only other friend. Dagur is just like, um no, I'm coming too. and so they take flight, kill the queen and take over that original nest or something. Again I am biting at the bit for viggo to meet them some how.
@windwalker-chrysalis
@lirabuswavi what do you think?

I like the idea that on Berk having long hair is sort of a mark of freedom and life, which is why most vikings try to have long hair or long beards. people who are taken prisoner by others in the archipelago often get their hair cut to demoralize them
The dragon hunters tribe does not have this same view, all seeking to keep their hair in easily kept and not likely to get in the way of hunting/fighting. They have some roman influences (in my opinion and headcanons)
Translating all this to my au, hiccup has a bit of a misunderstanding when Viggo offers him a haircut to get rid of dead ends. Hiccup panics. and hides for a bit. they have to have a chat to sort things out.

Okay so, I think some of what's off with me is off with hiccup. Perhaps it's ADHD who knows. Not me.
Anyways. I think hiccup seeks out adrenaline rushes because it gets his brain to quiet down or be able to concentrate ideas into something usable.
He hops on toothless and then leaps off the saddle at the highest point just to see the sea or earth rushing up at him to get the heart beat high and his mind gets clear.
Fic idea: maybe he has a hard convo with Viggo, gis words don't come easy and his brain is just going nuts over the angles. hiccup yanks on his hair and then hops on toothless while viggo is mid sentence. But he does not fly off. He merely leaps off and starts diving head first towards the ground. Viggo is alarmed by this sudden behavior. He knew hiccup would take risks, but he thought it only applies to strategic stuff. Hiccup does it twice more, lands, and restarts the conversation, sharper than before.

the visceral need to have hiccup picked up by enemies and dragons is so strong especially movie one and riders/defender hiccup. I love him just dangling a bit. or being held.
hiccup is just loudly complaining with his legs kicking a little

Writing something and now and obsessing over the idea of 14 year old Dagur trying to kidnap 11 year old hiccup back to Berserk. Or like keeping him there if it was a year where the hooligans went and visited Beserk for the treaty.
