i'm quite late but i still wanted to post this so: here's argentina (angie) and maría remedios del valle (the capitana/mother of the homeland).
i wanted to make these drawings as a sort-of tribute for the 8th of november (aka. the afro-argentines and afro-culture's day, which is in conmemoration to her) because, despite being one of the most forgotten figures in our history, maría remedios was important, more than people realize. and since this is about my hetalia oc (oops-) here's how i vision her influence on argentina, not only as a country but as a woman:
angie saw her as a role figure, almost like a mother in a way, she was the closest thing she would get as a maternal figure. during her independence, angie kept maría remedios close, as they helped eachother and made their way through the war, she tought her how to fight, heal the wounded soldiers and many things.
Tumblr media
however, after it was over, they took different paths, angie had other wars to fight and she didn't know anything else about maría remedios until it was too late. it didn't help that all this happened when angie was still very young, as she was growing up, she began to forget. it was only in recent years that maria remedios was beggining to be recognized for who she was, after being forgotten for centuries. argentina forgot about her, just like we argentines did, her people.
i am very aware of what happened to maría remedios and her story, how argentines forgot her and discredited her achievements and efforts (such ignorance being rooted in racism and misoginy). she is just as important as san martín, manuel belgrano and many argentine figures, we must not leave her in oblivion again.

You know the love that France(is) and Joan (of arc) have in Canon,
the sort of "I love you too much for what time we had together, I've never hated my immortality more then for it not letting me see you again/I'll remember you forever and every one shall know it, eventualy nowone will be sure you existed becouse my love mythologicalised you so much. "
Yeah I don't think france should be the only nation with that sort of thing. I think they all have like a 'you get One. no mockery, Promise' sort of thing cause all cultures have like a warrior or just a great person that got grandurised so much in death now nowone is sure they were real or myths.
I think scotlands/Angus' was William Walise. And I'm little stuck thinking of one's for the others.

A Rec For All The Hetalia History Nerds Out Here
Hello my fellow enthusiasts of the five minute comedy anime. I actually decided I should do even more unpaid PR for my favourite BBC4 Podcast.
Anyways, if you are a fan of Hetalia and already a history nerd/would like to get into history, do I have the thing for you:
You're Dead To Me is a Podcast for "people who don't like history, people who do like history and those who forgot to learn any at school". Each episode, the host Greg Jenner (Public Historian & "Chief Nerd to the TV show Horrible Histories") sits down with a comedian and a historical expert, to deliver nearly an hour of a funny history lesson. While you can't cite a podcast for a term paper (as my Dozent pointed out again today), it is still genuine, university lecture level knowledge! And to make sure your head won't explode from all the facts or that the academics won't get lost in ivory tower vocabulary, the class clown is there to ask clever questions and make silly jokes. So it is super factual and super accessible at the same time.
Often, you will get a glimpse at how historians work & how they access the past, too! I know the Anti-Intellectualism is rampant these days, but making academia more transparent and shed light on why certain stories haven't been in the spotlight until recently due to all kinds of bigotry is a much better start than people making shit up on tiktok.
Tomorrow (June 10th), the new series starts, but you can start to listen to the podcast right now with a backlog of over 80 Episodes!
Over 80 Episodes on what, you ask? Everything!
You want to learn about Black History? You will love the episodes on The Notting Hill Carnival, Paul Robeson, the Haitian Revolution, the Harlem Renaissance & many more!
You like your royal history, full of politicking, personal drama and intrigue? We've got The Borgias, King James IV. of Scotland, Saladin and The Mughal Empire for you!
Love the ladies, past and present? Let me introduce you to Eleanor of Aquitane, Joan of Arc, Harriet Tubman, Josephine Baker, Mary Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft!
Sick of hearing about Western (European) history? Sure thing, find something more to your tastes with The Asante Empire, Mansa Musa, The Tang Dynasty, Genghis Khan, Ivan The Terrible or The Ancient Babylonians.
I could make so many more categories and I'd still not cover every single episode, I am sure. You're Dead To Me is avaible online, on the BBC Sounds App, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
If you could check out the podcast & share this post/the podcast itself, it would mean a lot to me. As a history student who is currently working on getting her BA, it's immensely important for me that people learn how to recognize the past in the present. That they look around the world and see how we got here a little more clearly; that they look at remnants or depictions of the past and see its context better. If you think that sounds marvellous, if you always wanted to get into history beyond the googleable hard facts, then I invite you to start your journey here with me.
Also, the jokes are often really funny, I swear to God, there are so many bangers that live in my head rentfree.
"So I'm a Dutch-Brit?" "You're a Dutch-Brit." "So I'm Brutch -"
"I have a few silk shirts, every single one of them a mistake. I bought one of them in Italy and I don't know what I was thinking, I look flat-out divorced."
"They found 400.000 [clay] tablets, mate? That's amazing, that's more than at Glastonbury!"

So I recently rewatched Anastasia (1997) and did some research on the tragic backstory behind the real life story of her and her family. And as a long time Hetalia fan, I thought of a touching yet angst story about what a reincarnation scenario would be like for Anastasia and Russia. If France could see a reincarnation of Joan of Arc, why can’t Russia?
Imagine a scenario where Russia is walking around a museum or the old royal mansion, where he meets a woman who’s visiting from Greece to see her Russian boyfriend. (The reason why she’s reborn as a Greek person is because her name, Anastasia, means “rebirth” in Greek).
Russia immediately catches on that the woman is the reincarnation of his lost princess who he saw/loved as a daughter. He tries not to burst into tears and freak her out, so he simply tells her to enjoy her visit in his country and watch her walk off to meet up with her after mentioned boyfriend. He watches her with a sad yet content smile, seeing her being able to live her life as an adult and happily in love. A life she was denied of in her past life.
If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go cry now.

One of my favorite Hetalia fanfics, it was a recreation of the episode when France meets the reincarnation of Joan of Arc who is finally a normal girl and lives a quiet life, but this time with Spain and Federico García Lorca.
The fanfic showed this connection between the poet and Antonio disguised as someone who fought on the side of the republic during the Spanish Civil War, how they developed a small "romance" (it was more one-sided on Antonio's part, confused with admiration) and finally pain when Antonio learns of his tragic death. And in 2005 he meets a similar young man writing poetry near the statue of Federico García Lorca in Madrid but Antonio just lets him live in peace seeing how happy he is in his new life.
What a nice fanfic with a bittersweet ending.

Did Templar get treated differently because she was a woman? When was she born and if she died, when? How do you think she was born?
YES
so there are two things at play here: the Knights Templar were a monastic order, which meant total celibacy, and they were a military order, which meant there could be no female members or female equivalent like the other monastic orders had. even married members were forbidden, during their tenure at least, from having physical contact with any woman for pretty much any reason.
I like to make hetalia's worldbuilding as the nations were always public or at least known about, and that they're not actual personification of nations but more like patron gods that tend to pick (or be picked by) particular groups to be the patron of, and most of those groups happen to be nations or states or what-have-you. this gives me a lot more freedom to figure out Solène's bio details because it doesn't inherently tie her to the Templar Order, who were multicultural and multinational and would otherwise be a complete nightmare for me to treat like nations.
so the fact Marie-Solène is a female immortal of a male-only order is because the Templars wanted an immortal but didn't exactly get to have their pick of the lot because there aren't a ton of immortals to go around, ya know? so they usually get snatched up pretty quickly. so the Templars would be at the mercy of whatever immortal came to them, and that ended up being Solène, and they go with it because having an immortal patron is very much worth ignoring social rules for.
she does have a very unique position among them though, and is very much treated like a Marian or Athena or Joan of Arc figure, except she also gets to actually fight (Joan of Arc didn't) because why get an immortal patron for a military order and not allow them to fight? so she also gets to wear armor and the white vestments, though she also wears habits or veils in addition for modesty's sake. she's basically a nun in a full set of armor. she gets the same kind of reverence that the Virgin Mary does; untouchable, mother/maiden figure treatment.
I have her being born in southern France during the end of the Early Middle Ages, since southern France was where the order got some of its first land grants. she really should die somewhere between 1307 and 1314, when the Templars were arrested, executed, and the order dissolved, but honestly I'm pathetic and hate killing characters, so in some hcs she lives into the modern day and in others she doesn't. if she does die, then she's burned alive at the stake with her other Templar brothers.

Fighting the antipapist cause since 2015 ("Reunion")
After "Oblivio" you wouldn't think Alya was so agressively anti-ladynoir
Tikki "doesn't know much about love" after having spent four seasons dishing out advice on the topic
no tourists in Paris because of the akumas I guess, that's why the Louvre is always empty
yes it sure is nice to communicate with your dad, thanks for pointing it out, not like any dads here have any ulterior motives behind this conversation or have repeatedly attacked families of people with miraculous to extort them or anything like that
it breaks my heart to hear Adrien use the word "Papa" about the guy who HAD FEI'S DAD KILLED FRIENDLY REMINDER
I'm missing Lila here
as if Gabriel hasn't been hiring troll farms to smear Ladybug ever since "Stoneheart", but of all the things I expected this show to discuss, online radicalisation was not one of them
First time I've heard her referred to as "Johanne" but you do you, subs, technically it's not wrong
Tikki's behind the times on universal design
...not to be That Person but beyond using this power for dating therapy, maybe not ask the one whose virginity was like half her brand
Jesus Christ Jalil what IS it with you getting the off-brand horror akumatisations. Like last time you were seconds away from committing human sacrifice. Good on them for showing us that more people than the Mean Girls And Felix are willing to join Hawkdaddy's cause
brave manicure
they could've given us Cat Noir's transformation sequence in the car
for a moment there I thought the return of the truth-telling akuma would give us a return of the surprise!dad's, but alas
of course Adrien had a horse girl phase. of course he did.
autodeakumatisation cheapens by the day and these writers have clearly never tried confronting lunatics online with fact and witnessed them disregard it because it doesn't fit their narrative
I don't know which is more hilariously blasphemic: MLB’s assertian that Joan of Arc never died a martyr's death or Hetalia's assertion that she was reincarnated as an American tourist
well that was an interesting piece of foreshadowing for Kwami's Choice
oh that final scene has BETTER be followed up next episode. also how dare they not show us Plagg retching it out like a hair ball

Et thinks his soulmate is this woman, 17 years older than him and married - Jeanne. I read him the part of my bad hetalia fanfic where France is talking towards the sky, looking for God, mourning Joan of Arc - it’s stupid, I excused it after. Relatable, he called it.
he’s too much like Macron isn’t he. so progressive, though - proudly calls his persona “fuckboy” and keeps up with texts from like a dozen girls. when do you know you’re in a relationship, i asked him. like, a monogamous one. “i renounce myself for us”.
that’s what i wanted to do, i say. not wanted to, i guess. felt like i had to want to. convoluted, but he got it. i like when people get it. i’d like to get back to the point of my life when i could tell ppl i loved them without any of us finding it romantic - not even loved them, but loved something they did. i love how you understand me. i love that you try to.
anyway, he said - you felt like you had to want to renounce yourself for him. i would have renounced myself for us - me and Jeanne. that was a really subtle way of saying things were unilateral, and i complimented as much. “Choupette needs her iddah” - I asked him if i resemble Lagerfeld’s cat that much. escaped me that choupette just means sweetie.
i asked him if i should get my instagram back, he just laughed. “i hate when MEUFS go through breakups and need to act like they’re fine - they’re radio silent when they heal”. i want to be radio silent. i want to heal. i want to be heard - you are. “the person you want to hear you does not want to listen, so maybe stop shouting”.
i told him, i think you were groomed. i think that middle-aged woman is not your soulmate. he said “the only people that leave a lasting impact are those we deem better than us - someone can’t be my age and better than me”. bit pedantic, but it stuck with me. he said he reduced what he feels in relation to her to a simple word i seem to find comfort in. i said, it brings more pain than comfort - it’ll bring comfort again. he thinks soulmates are in an everchanging state, that relationships can’t fulfill you forever, that you just grow out of people and that’s the moment when you’re supposed to say bye and look for someone to suit the new you. i asked him if there aren’t exceptions - i must have looked pretty down in the dumps because he gave me a shaky smile - it’s always weird to see people react to my feelings, make me feel so real. anyway. exceptions. he said there must be some, but not this one.
i wasn’t referring to this one when i asked him, i don’t think. it just sounded like such a bleak conclusion for my hopeless romantic self. there are exceptions, he said again, and i started crying.
G told me something once, before the violence started, and i shooed it away back then but i circle back to it now - i liked you so much that i tried to be the right fit for you. it invariably got exhausting.
i told Et about it, tried not to make it sound like humble bragging - do you think that’s valid. he said yes, it is. a lot of people play the part, and apparently i have something that makes people think it’s worth it to try their hands at acting.
i want someone not pretending. or at least someone that’s really bad at it, so i can see past. didn’t cry today (there’s still time but i’m not trying to shoot myself in the foot).
