Random Thought, please humor me.
SURPRISE: YUUSHA GAINS MAGIC (By absorbing the Magic around her & dealing with Overblots)! Even better, she doesn't need a Mage Stone to control it! What would Yuusha's Unique Magic be & how does she use it? How would Jamil react?
"Magic makes people feel too powerful. Too entitled."
"That is not what magic does. That's just your fear. Fear is what can't be trusted."
Tumblr media
HELPPP anon your random thought sent me down into a rabbit hole and i was hyperfixated on this for at least a WEEK 😭
THANK YOU FOR THE ASK BTW I REALLY APPRECIATE IT I HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH THIS 💕💕💕
anyways i also had an agonizing realization that yuusha is somewhat twisted elsa/anna because she has:
braid in front ✅
light-colored hair streak ✅
love interest that used her for his schemes ✅
desire to connect with people bc of years of loneliness (and emotional instability) ✅
unresolved childhood trauma in general ✅
(and probably more idk, these are the ones that stand out to me at the moment)
i haven't thought about frozen for YEARS and somehow it's still haunting me.
i have a lot of mixed feelings about this realization in general but the reason i brought this up is because i ended up basing yuusha's unique magic on frozen (not the ice powers part, but more the emotions aspect since elsa's powers work based on her emotions) while also still having aspects of yuu's own personality on it.
(also I'm sorry in advance i keep on dropping random lore about yuu and jamil's dynamic that only makes sense to myself hndsfhdsj)
Tumblr media
I'm your friend. You don't have to hide. SHOW YOURSELF.
Tumblr media
"Show Yourself" forces the target to say what's actually on their mind as long as she touches them. Since she's not particularly powerful and skilled with her own unique magic in the beginning, it's limited to skin-to-skin contact, and it only lasts for as long as she's touching her target.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Yuu trained it more, it doesn't have to be skin-to-skin, just as long as she makes some kind of physical contact with her target; and it could last for as long as she wants even if she is no longer making physical contact. (But the longer she keeps it up, the more blot accumulates.) Yuusha would mostly just use her unique magic to mess with people. It'll only be rare that she chooses to use it for something serious.
To add more onto how Jamil would react to these magic shenanigans: They've both agreed on not using their unique magic on each other. To do so would be a breach of trust. (Of course there would be special exceptions but generally that's their agreement.) And since Jamil is still a scheming prick (affectionate), her "Show Yourself" unique magic would be useful. Plus, Yuu would not be against using her unique magic 99% of the time since she is also aware of the usefulness of her ability. Jamil would insist on helping Yuu out on how to use her magic because there was no way she'd get the hang of it immediately. And he knows she would refuse to ask any other (capable) magician for help.
An alternate idea that I scrapped was "Let It Go" where it's essentially Yuu telling her target to let go of their (usually negative) emotions. But those feelings can't just disappear so Yuu basically absorbs them so now it's her burden to carry instead. I scrapped it because I can't settle on how it works. (But it still had angst potential so I couldn't help but draw a bit about it anyway.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(extra rambling below about yuusha overblot thoughts if anyone's interested hdlfhjgj)
Tumblr media
this is a brief tangent from the original question because i also thought, "hey what if she overblotted, wouldn't that be fun"
i could see the overblot going in either two ways:
yuu accidentally hurts grim (or another friend) with her magic. she’s so distraught thinking that even with magic she can't protect those who are dear to her. and so during the overblot she will not actively try to hurt anyone but instead exhausting her magic reserves in an intentional attempt at self-destruction. (yes i also see the frozen parallels shhhh)
OR
something happens that was simply THE LAST STRAW. now she’s too pissed at everyone that she no longer cares about what happens to her or anyone else, going on a destructive rampage. which can also be considered an intentional attempt at self-destruction.
either way, basically, if she can’t go home she’s just going to take herself out and/or the school instead. the girl is not okay.
(there's actually nothing good she can home to, but she's convinced she'll be happy again if she returns. but she doesn't know that because she can't remember shit about her home. that's a separate lore dump post hgdsjfkld)
also the blot monster behind her would look something like marshmallow (elsa's snow monster from frozen) :)
Tumblr media
(i also used to have a similar idea for yuusha. i planned to have her be immune to magic *because* she was absorbing it and she didn't realize. leading to an inevitable overblot) (but i scrapped it because yuusha became my victim for jamil x yuu stuff) (like if i can't have the excuse to have jamil use snake whisper on yuu then what is the point)

The Power of Waking= The Power of True Love
Power of True Love= Strength to protect your most cherish Person
The edges of sleep and death touch
We have seen an "act of true love" bring a person back from "death" (Phillip and Aurora, Eugene and Rapunzel, Anna and Elsa, Snow White and whoever the fuck that guy is, Ash an Pikachu in Pokémon 2000
We have seen "sleep" parallel death before in the series
But what couple have Sora and Riku been paralleled most closely to? Beast and Belle. In the movie, Beast sacrifices himself to protect Belle. This sacrifice makes Belle realize her feelings of true love, breaking the curse and saving him.
Hey
HEY
GUESS WHAT HAPPENED IN KH3
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
And ONLY THEN does Sora use "all his heart" (power of waking) to save Riku and the others.
It's important that he saves Riku first because that is what
But Soras heart is so full of love for all his friends that he abuses the power and spreads himself too thin and pays the price.
But hey, don't you also have to use the Power of Waking to enter the Realm of Darkness?
Well suddenly Riku is in trouble and Sora is like, "Oh wait THAT'S where I left my door to Darkness, silly me."
But it GETS BETTER.
These two have been able to get to the Realm if Darkness before in KH2.
But what preceeded that?
Oh.
Tumblr media
OH.
Riku gets murked, and then Sora carries him on and theybhave their heart to heart before a light appears and they make it to the Realm of Darkness.
Riku STARTED DDD with already having the Power of Waking as he dived into Sora's Sleep subconsciously to protect him.
Sora has big ol heart and and no clue whats going on with and it just thinks "Riku's always picking up the slack for me" but "what the heck is true love?"
Meanwhile, Riku:

Snuggle Weather
AO3
Summary: A ficlet about rain, tea, and cooler weather.
This prompt is from the Fall Drabble Prompts List.
Tagging others who might enjoy: @anmylica @deckerstarblanche, @elfiola, @goforlaunchcee, @jrob64, @kmomof4, @pirateswhore, @stahlop, @teamhook, @tiganasummertree, @undercaffinatednightmare, @xarandomdreamx, @zaharadessert
Emma could smell the cold in the air flowing through the open windows. An odd quirk she developed after she’d almost frozen to death all those years ago. She smiled as she thought about how far Elsa and her friendship had come since that unfortunate day. This year had passed far too quickly, and they hadn’t gotten to see much of one another. But the cooler air meant it was closer to the one visit that Elsa would never miss - Christmas Eve. They would get together to catch up over rich hot chocolate and the sugar cookies Killian insisted on baking each year. Before she left for Christmas at Anna’s, Elsa would leave the residents of Storybrooke a peaceful blanket of snow to greet them the next morning.
Emma breathed in deeply, filling her lungs with crisp air, even as the warmth of the cosy nights in her future spread through her.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her into a form she knew as well as her own. She melted into the embrace, allowing the comfort he was offering to quiet her. He placed a quick kiss on her temple when she laid her head heavily on his shoulder.
“Hi there.” Her voice was hardly more than a sigh released as his presence soothed her.
“Hey, love.” Killian’s murmured response rumbled through him - a light vibration against her back. He held her close and absent-mindedly swayed to the low tune he hummed. She closed her eyes and let the moment wrap around them. The cooler weather had a way of turning her fierce pirate into something soft and warm. The human equivalent of a weighted blanket.
His words from their first winter came back to her: Neverland didn’t have autumn or winter. The cold reminds me. I am free. This is real. Not the dreams that haunt me and drag me into the past. This.
You.
She’d kissed him, then. She had been unable to find words that could tell him that she understood. And, he’d held her close soaking in the acceptance and relief that she offered him.
An odd chime went off, shattering the moment around them. Killian stopped his swaying, reached into his pocket, and shut off an alarm on his phone. “Tea’s done,” he explained.
Emma let out a mostly playful groan as he carefully pulled away from her to tend to the tea. She followed him to the kitchen, where the smell of cinnamon and clove warmed her even further. “Hmmm, that smells heavenly.”
“Something warm for the cold, rainy night ahead.” He removed the tea bag from her cup and poured a splash of milk into it before handing it to her.
“The weatherman just said it wouldn’t rain for a week,” she informed him with all the innocence she could muster. And she smiled into the steam rising from her cup as he told her exactly what he thought of the trickster who spouted such obvious lies about the weather every day. His accent grew thicker as he informed her of all the ways he knew with absolute certainty it was going to rain. She bit her lips closed, capturing her smile, but her eyes were dancing with humour when he finally looked up at her.
“Oh,” he stopped mid-sentence. “Funny, Swan.”
“Swan, is it?” Emma smiled wickedly at him.
“It is poor form, Swan, teasing a sailor about his knowledge of the weather.”
“I would never!”
He raised his eyebrow in response.
When she didn’t offer an apology or any additional response, he sighed wearily and shook his head. “To think, I had just made you tea.”
“Really good tea,” she answered and took a sip from the mug warming her hands. She leaned against him, her shoulder pressing into his chest, and smiled at how easily she’d gotten him that time. He ran his left arm up and down her back in a gentle motion and sipped from his own mug.
“I love you.” He offered the words up to her simply, a statement of fact. As though that silly exchange confirmed that truth for him again somehow. Emma looked up at him, trying to read in his impossibly blue eyes what he was thinking, trying to determine just how she’d captured and kept his wonderful heart hers for so long.
“I know,” she said because, despite the improbability of it all, she did know it. “I love you, too,” she continued, but her words were drowned out by the sound of heavy raindrops that were now pouring down outside.
“Emma, the windows!” He yelled over the noise filling the kitchen. He turned to close the one behind him, over the sink, and cold droplets hit her face, stirring her into action. She rushed to the other windows, cold water pelting her before she could close them.
They fell into a panting heap onto the couch before the crackling fire once they got every window closed.
“You were right.”
“I usually am.” He answered, raising his left up to offer her his side.
Rolling her eyes at him, she curled into the proffered side. He rested his arm on her and idly smoothed her hair with his right hand. Warmed by the fire and his embrace, Emma drifted to sleep.
-------------------------
@kazoosandfannypacks - I really, really hope you like it. I am not sure it is very autumn - it kind of got away from me... Anyway, I hope you it makes you smile.

So @susykriver told me I should share some of my HC of Fuyumi as a teacher. I'm not really confidend in my headcanons, but hey, somebody might enjoy them.
- Fuyumi has a love/hate relationship with teaching math. It makes her remember studying with Touya and helping Natsuo with his homework.
- Seeing kids playing as heroes make her heart clench because she can’t help but remember Touya as a small kid.
- the kids always give her the magnets they get in their snacks so she displays them on the fridge, where they are also used to hold her favourite drawings that the kids made for her.
- she has let it slip that she really likes Miruko and most of the magnets are now of the bunny hero. She gets some of Shouto’s when he becomes a hero.
- she has a box where she keeps all the letters and drawings where the kids have written their apologies. She’s proud to have thought them that it’s important to apologise and that they should not hurt others.
- when Frozen came out the kids were like “Fuyumi-sensei is our Elsa!” and drew her as Elsa. They noticed that she was confused and when they discovered that it was because she hadn’t seen Frozen they begged her to watch it with them. Fuyumi was crying at the end of the movie, because the love between Elsa and Anna was the one she felt for her brothers but she didn’t manage to save them. Of course the kids comforted her.
- When Enji and Fuyumi were the only ones still living in the Todoroki’s estate, Enji noticed that the light in Fuyumi’s room was on even after he finished training. He knew that she was working on things for the kids at school. When he decided to try and finally be a father, one of his first small step was going to Fuyumi’s room as he finished training and tell her that she needed to rest and to not overwork herself. She always told him that being tired for her kids was worth it.
- After the war, Fuyumi studied to help Touya and Toga get their high school diploma. She also helped Tenko achieve all the diplomas he didn’t have.

Hey remember my “Anna as the Fifth Spirit” idea, aka where Anna, with her incredible and boundless love for her kingdom, her sister, and the world around them, becomes the Fifth Spirit instead of Elsa? Thanks to the new Winter Romance game on Azaleasdolls, I can finally make a passable design for her!
So here’s Fifth Spirit Anna and Kristoff sharing a sweet moment post-movie.

A chilly wind in Arendelle's capital was blowing around the noses of the citizens and was the first harbinger of the approaching winter. It had been an unusually long golden autumn with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures, it was now high time for many to provide firewood and spend the last few days enjoying nature before everything disappeared under a cold, white blanket of snow.
          Anna and Elsa had agreed to accompany Yelana and the other Northuldra home last night. They told Mari that morning that they would visit Vesterland's royal house on their way back and wished her and Ambassador Mitya a safe journey home.
          Elsa had the brilliant idea of sailing with the new ship instead of riding. Anna immediately agreed and told her sister that it would certainly be much easier for her to think of a new name for the confiscated vessel this way.
          Yelana was thrilled when she heard about it, because she found Arendelle's ships fascinating and had long wished to travel on them one day. That way, everyone would arrive at the Northuldra camp much earlier and there would also be a way to transport men and equipment, including prisoners back to Arendelle and the naval base, Elsa told her.
          However, not all Northuldra would travel by ship, this was especially true for the merchants whose camp was in the northern forest, not far from the capital. They would also take Yelana's reindeer with them. Indu, too, who did not fare particularly well on the last ship voyage, decided instead to accompany the others on his reindeer by land and then leave for the far north in a few days to join his family.
          Anna had also agreed the night before to Yelana's unusual request to show the castle's stable boy the forest where she and her people lived. She had promised him and his reaction had made her smile. The boy had shown genuine interest and also a knack for reindeer. Yelana immediately made her way to the stables, also to check on her reindeer.
          “Hey, stable boy, do you still remember me and my promise!” called Yelana as soon as she was standing inside.
          The boy turned in surprise and peeked around the corner of one of the horse stalls to see who was calling out to him. As soon as he recognised Yelana he called back.
          “Lady, you bet I remember! But please don't joke, because you must know that my work here is extremely important to me!”
          “Come out, for I have asked your queen's permission! You will accompany me to the Northuldra region, as promised by me, and then you will see what has always interested you.”
          “Are you really serious, Lady?” he asked back, uncertain.
          “I'm dead serious, lad. So get ready, because we will set sail together with the queen and her sister in about an hour!”

youtube
It was hard to say who was more impressed by the ship's voyage, Yelana, a more than true Northuldra, or a perhaps sixteen-year-old stable boy who was leaving Arendelle for the first time, and on a ship of the royal fleet at that!
          Both stood at the bow and let the wind blow around their ears. Neither spoke a word for a long time, but the royal siblings smirked at the two as they strolled across the deck, inspecting the new ship.
          “Do you think I could start a new future as a ship's boy?” he asked Yelana excitedly at one point.
          “Who knows,” she replied, “but I think you'd better stay a stable boy, because you're very good and loving with the animals, especially reindeer. Not everyone is cut out for it, but you certainly are, believe me.”
          He looked at her thoughtfully and then nodded slowly, “Perhaps you are right, Lady Yelana. Animals have always been a part of my life, even when I was very small. Somehow I understand their needs and know when they are well or when they need something, and the horses in the stable like me, I can feel that. On the other hand, Arendelle's big ships fascinate me and make me dream of far away adventures.”
          “Well then, you're experiencing one right now,” Yelana replied with a smile, “and you'll certainly be thrilled by our life in the great forest. And I can feel that, you know.”
          He smiled broadly, clung excitedly to the bow rail, closed his eyes and breathed in deeply the fresh wind that blew around his nose and brought the distant adventure he had always dreamed of.
~~~
“It is fast, the ship, and in excellent condition. Our people have done a good job in getting everything ready, don't you think, sis?”
          “Yes, I like it too, and it just flies over the water, all without Nokk and Gale,” Elsa replied, and they both had to laugh at their comparison. “Have you thought of a new name yet? Jarls Pride is kind of inappropriate, I think, and it still reminds me too much of Thord.”
          “Not yet, but I'm sure I'll have found one by the time we return. By the way, as for Thord the usurper and the current ship name, I was thinking the same thing as you. I hope we never see him again, though I'd love to give him a taste of my fist.”
          Elsa shook her head in amusement and chuckled softly, “You've had that before with your ex. Be glad you don't have to face Thord again! But now, enough of this tiresome topic, let's go and see how our Northuldra friends are doing instead.”
          “You're right, I'm sure they'll be wondering why we haven't joined them.”
          The sisters made their way to the quarterdeck and as they climbed the short flight of steps they saw everyone sitting good-humouredly on the deck planks or standing at the rail, a new flag with the crocus, the symbol of the House of Arendelle waving in the breeze between them. Anna briefly looked up behind her and there, with great satisfaction, she made out a large, long flag with the same symbol on the main mast. She smiled, for this was now her and Elsa's ship. Their very own!
          And who knows, maybe next year they would both go on a long and beautiful voyage together to friends in other kingdoms, in fine weather and a summer breeze, not as chilly as it was at the moment. How about calling the gaff sailer the 'Voyager'? Anna smiled up to her ears as she imagined it all in her mind.
          “Well, how are you?” asked Elsa of the others, snapping Anna out of her daydream. “You are certainly looking forward to returning home with your friends in a little while, am I right?”
          “Yes, you are absolutely right, Your Highness, what me and Ryder are looking forward to the most is seeing Honeymaren again. I miss her so much,” Linnea said and stood up.
          Ryder stood with his back casually leaning against the railing and nodded happily. “I had seen her at least briefly when I was there with the soldiers … and well, at our joint fight with Kolgrimr of course. I'm so proud of her and I'm sure we'll have a lot to talk about in the days and weeks to come. I'm really looking forward to it.”
          “I'm mostly looking forward to my forest and being able to gather herbs again,” Myrtha said, “Besides, I'm sure our people have missed a good healer … without wanting to praise myself, of course,” she laughed. “I miss everyone very much.”
          “And I can finally ask Ikka's parents for her hand in marriage. Then next year we plan to get married, after I have put myself in her parents’ service. Because that's the custom with us … not just the proposal ceremony with butterflies and reindeer, the way Ryder helped Kristoff in his proposal,” Joná grinned and, sitting up, put an arm around his beloved, who leaned her head against his shoulder with a smile as she nodded in acknowledgement.
          "But then instead of Anna, Yelana suddenly appeared and you should have seen Kristoff's surprised face," Ryder smirked and everyone laughed, even Anna.
          "I didn't know that," she said. "He'll have to tell me more about that when he gets a chance. It's a pity I didn't see that … I mean, of course, the butterflies and all that. But anyway, we are happy for you, for all of you," she said. "By the way, do you know anything about what Yelana wants to show us and why we should definitely come along?” she added, but only received a shrug of the shoulders in reply. Myrtha did not respond at all, but looked out over the fjord.
          Anna somehow had the impression that Myrtha knew all about it but didn't want to say anything. But no matter, Elsa and she would find out before evening, so she also shrugged and turned to her sister.
          “Come on, let's both go below deck and have a look at the captain's cabin, Elsa. I haven't seen it yet.”
          “Me neither, good idea. See you, guys. If you need anything, tell the boatswain down there, the one with the blue cap on his head,” Elsa said and headed for the second exit, closely followed by Anna, who was still smiling and waving to the others behind her.
          “'Hey, Elsa, I think I've already come up with a great name for our new ship,” Anna said enthusiastically as they walked down the short hallway towards the cabin.
          “Our ship, you say, it almost sounds like you've already reserved it for just the two of us,” Elsa laughed as she opened the door. “And what are you going to call 'our' ship?”
          “The Voyager, because we'll both be making a lot of trips in it in the future.”
          “So without the ARN designation in front of it? Doesn't sound so bad though, Anna. I like it.”
          “Well then, it's a deal! The ARN Voyager it is. It could do with a new coat of paint, though. What do you think of white?”
          Elsa looked at her in surprise, pondered for a while and finally nodded with a dreamy smile. “Oh, I can imagine that quite well, it also emphasises the streamlining of the sailer. Good idea, Anna!”
          Anna grinned back and then looked around the captain's cabin. All of Thord's private things had been removed, except for the heavy wooden table and three reclining chairs, so they could furnish the room to their liking. Including everything that was still missing, i.e. sea charts, nautical books, instruments and all things for the personal outfit for a land trip on distant shores. The room offered enough space and also a separate working area for the two of them.
          Anna was already picturing everything as she walked around, while Elsa stood at the slanted stern windows looking out over the wake and the Arenfjord.
          “A few flowers are missing here too, Elsa, maybe crocuses and in the summer some sunflowers too. We could have the walls and all the frames redecorated in the Arendelle castle design. What do you think? I already have everything in mind,” Anna asked, joining her to look out as well.
          “I trust your taste, sis. I'm sure it will be nice and cosy.”
youtube
In the afternoon, Anna had the Voyager anchored on the second beach and three dinghies lowered into the water. First they loaded the food they had brought with them, mainly flour for baking breads and also some fruit, various mushrooms from the area around Arendelle, some lamb and freshly caught crabs from the night before, which Yelana said were hard to find up here in the north. And of course Olina's famous chocolate. That was not to be missed.
          Next the Northuldra got into two boats, followed by Anna, Elsa and their bodyguards in the third. The stable boy was all excited as he shimmied down the rope ladder into the second boat and sat down right next to Yelana.
          They had not been travelling for five minutes when they were spotted by two Northuldra fishermen who were unloading the catch from their boats. One of them was gesticulating wildly and shouting something at the other, but they couldn't understand it because of the distance. But that wasn't necessary, because the second fisherman was already running towards the camp. So their little surprise would no longer be a surprise, because very soon everyone there knew who had just arrived.
          Shortly afterwards, the dinghies pulled onto the sandy beach with a slight crunching sound. The first to disembark were all the Northuldra. Then followed the royal bodyguards, who together pulled the heavy third boat far up the beach so that their highnesses would not get their feet wet when they disembarked. The fisherman who stayed behind immediately rushed to his people and especially greeted Yelana joyfully and effusively. Anna and Elsa exchanged happy glances.
          After that, they all had to walk another half hour before they came around the bend and saw the camp in front of them. Actually, they heard it already before they caught sight of the first Northuldra there. Almost everyone there was already shouting excitedly, loudly spreading the happy news and many were already running towards them to greet them.
          The sisters watched excitedly as all their Northuldra friends were welcomed as joyfully as if they had been away for years. All of them did not advance one step further because the hugs and greetings just would not end. It was loud and many tears of joy flowed on both sides.
          And then Honeymaren came towards them smiling broadly and with her head proudly raised. As soon as she was spotted, everyone formed an alley for her, for the long-awaited family reunion.
          Linnea just stood there staring towards her for a little while, looking her over from head to toe, before finally spreading her arms wide for her daughter with tears in her eyes. Honeymaren ran the last few meters towards her and fell into her mother's arms. Everyone around them clapped and some of them even sang a joik.
          Elsa watched the reunion closely and it was undeniable that Honeymaren had somehow changed since the last time. Elsa couldn't put her finger on what it was, but the young woman seemed more mature to her and, above all, her first glance was not at her but at her people, especially her mother. Elsa noticed contentment in her clear gaze, but also determination.
          When the two broke away from each other again, Honeymaren had time to embrace her brother and also greeted everyone else with heartfelt hugs. She stood a little longer in front of Yelana, then looked questioningly and with a raised eyebrow at the boy standing next to her.
          “This is the stable boy from the castle who I promised to show our people and the forest to someday,” Yelana said and the boy bowed to Honeymaren, which made her smile. “But you and I have something very important to talk about, Honeymaren.”
          “Of course, Yelana, but I'm sure it can wait. I'm really glad you've finally returned. But tell me, what is actually in the sacks you brought with you?” she said, casting an astonished glance at them.
          “Some food and flour for baking.”
          “That's nice that you thought of it, but let's all go to the camp for now,” Honeymaren said a little louder, “you must be a very hungry and your return must be celebrated properly. Besides, I have an announcement to make later.”
          After she said this and waved ahead, everyone followed her with expectant expressions. Shortly after, everyone sat comfortably around the cooking fires while the women in the camp began to prepare a feast, baking fresh flatbread and asking Anna and Elsa about the method of preparing these strange sea creatures. They gladly gave them information and asked about the whereabouts of General Mattias, Fabian and the other soldiers.
          As they were led towards the tent camp, they wondered about the two wooden cages at the edge of the forest that undoubtedly housed the prisoners of the recent battle.
          “You got them all, I see,” Elsa said with satisfaction, and Anna showed an expression that was difficult to interpret. She said nothing and avoided looking the prisoners in the eye between the wooden slats. Bad memories sprang up in her and she quickly took Elsa by the elbow.
          “Come, let's go quickly to Mattias and Fabian. I can't stand this any longer.”
          Elsa looked at her worriedly and then nodded in understanding. “I can understand that, Anna.”
          When they arrived at the tent camp, in front of which several cooking fires were also already burning and above one hung the large cooking kettle, in which it was bubbling and spreading a familiar scent, the excitement was great. Word spread quickly among the soldiers that their queen and sister had arrived unexpectedly.
          The general and the fencing master blew the tent cover aside when they noticed and hurried out and towards them. Everyone around the sisters bowed deeply to them and saluted appropriately.
          “Your Majesty, Your Highness! We were not expecting you, this is really a nice surprise,” Mattias said.
          “How is the leg?” Fabian added immediately, turning to Anna with a somewhat worried expression.
          “It's all fine, Fabian. Thank you for asking. Hello, General Mattias.”
          “So you actually did it and were able to apprehend all the fugitives,” Elsa said, “That's excellent! Then we can take them to the penal camp first thing tomorrow, for we came by ship and it is anchored close by on the upper beach. It's over at last and we'll take you all home.”
          “That will make the men happy and me too, for I miss my Halima very much. Is she still at the castle with Elin and are they both well?” asked Mattias, looking from one to the other sister in turn.
          “Yes, Mattias, you need not worry at all. She has returned home, though, because she missed her house and the garden,” said Elsa. “But I'm sure we have a lot to talk about and we could talk more back at the camp. There they are preparing a feast in honour of the Northuldra we brought with us. I guess that will last all night.”
          “We'd love to, wouldn't we, Fabian?” said the general.
          “Unless there's that weird bread with birch bark again,” Fabian said, making a face, “I miss the food from Arendelle and a fragrant fresh loaf of bread from the baker.”
          “Fear not, Fabian, for we have brought flour for baking and many other goodies … even chocolate from the castle kitchen!” Anna reassured him and Fabian was already licking his lips.
          “Well then, let's go,” Elsa said and Anna added, “But by another way, please.”
~~~
An hour or two later, after everyone in the camp was full and satisfied - there had even been fårikål, an extremely delicious lamb stew, for the guests of honour - the cosy evening began.
          The royal sisters had discussed everything with Mattias and Fabian in the presence of Yelana and it was slowly getting dark in the sky when the Nattura family came out of their kota again. Everyone wore their best clothes and the women an elaborately made scarf over it. In addition, they all wore colourful shoelaces, attracting everyone's attention, because every Northuldra immediately knew what this clothing meant. Everyone stood up with serious expressions and partly bowed heads as Honeymaren led them to Anna, Elsa and Yelana.
youtube
          “What does this mean,” Anna asked Yelana, who now rose as well.
          “This is our traditional mourning attire, Anna. We call these shoelaces voedtege and they are only worn when someone in the family has died,” she whispered back
          “Halvard!” breathed Elsa in sudden realisation, and without looking, motioned Anna to stand and pay respects as well. But Anna was already standing and looking sadly at the Natturas.
          As the family stopped and Honeymaren turned in a circle to look at everyone, the Northuldra moved closer and formed a large circle around the mourners. Not only to show their deep respect, but also to understand every word that would now presumably follow as a promised announcement.
          Alena also joined them now, followed by Árnason with the young stable boy in tow, and nodded knowingly to Honeymaren. The latter nodded back and then raised her voice.
          “Only yesterday I was at papa's grave for a few hours, telling him that his family would soon be complete to visit him. Now the time has come, and not only that, for I would like to ask you all to take a day of mourning and join us. I have learned that you have not yet had the opportunity to do so, or that you have been waiting for this moment. I would like us to place reindeer antlers on his grave and honour him with a traditional joik.”
          Honeymaren paused for a moment and then asked Alena to join her.
          “As probably only the older ones among you remember, we haven't had a noaidi go into a trance session and check in the spiritual plane for decades to see if Halvard's free soul has made it there and is doing well. Since I was born a long time after that, I didn't know about it either until I learned about this meaning from Alena here next to me. She is an experienced noaidi and will help us with this task for the first time in a long time.”
          She looked around and then said, “Now please prepare yourselves and accompany us to Halvard's grave.”
          The Northuldra dispersed to put on their best clothes, get their birchwood staffs and the large reindeer antler. Yelana excused herself and left the group from Arendelle to go to her old kota.
          However, there she found that her belongings, which she had not been able to take with her when she was banished, had been removed when Gyda moved into her hut. At first she was very upset about this and hoped that the things had not been burnt and had been taken to safety by her people in time. And so it was. She took the bare necessities with her and changed in her kota.
          Alena and her young companion were of course not prepared for such an event. While she whispered to him that she wanted to quickly fetch her drum, he remained waiting where he was. The boy from Arendelle had become somewhat friend with Árnason, who was about his age, in the last few hours and had told him about the reason for his journey. He was now standing beside him a little uncertainly and was very surprised by this event.
          “You are about to experience something very special, Lars” whispered Árnason, “but just stay by my side. Watch and listen, for you will surely not forget this.”
          Anna and Elsa, standing a little apart with their escort from Arendelle, waited patiently until all the Northuldra were ready and the procession was about to start. The royal bodyguard did not quite know how to behave and the commander politely and quietly asked his queen.
          “Follow us in silence and stay close to us. Just try to behave according to the sad occasion.”
          Half an hour later, all the Northuldra gathered in festive dress. Some of them also wore colourful shoelaces and Mattias said quietly to Anna and Elsa that they too had lost relatives during the war, though he did not know if their dead had been buried near Halvard. But as Honeymaren had said, it would be a full day of mourning and surely the following event would be repeated at the gravesites of the fallen tomorrow, he said quietly.
          “You have experienced this before, haven't you? While you were locked up here in the forest,” Anna whispered back.
          “Not at first, because my men and I kept ourselves separate from the Northuldra for a long time. After all, they were still the enemy in our eyes then. But later we did, after we had all inevitably come to terms, several times even. It is a beautiful ceremony, similar to the one you have experienced here before, when the Northuldra welcomed you as theirs.”
          Movement now arose in front and eventually all set off in silence, following the Natturas ahead. The group from Arendelle followed at the end.
          And as if summoned, at the same moment some riders on reindeer appeared. They were the merchants returning from Arendelle, together with Indu. They had made it just in time and as soon as they received information about the reason for the event from the nearest person in the vicinity, they hurried off to also equip themselves appropriately for the occasion. Only Indu felt a little lost, but joined them in the end.
~~~
There was hardly any space between the trees around Halvard's grave, but a large circle formed anyway, which many lit with torches. The Northuldra with the reindeer antler laid it gingerly on the grave and then stepped back. Linnea and Ryder knelt before it and now spoke to their father's soul, much as Honeymaren had done before, only a little more quietly. Honeymaren stood silent beside it with her head down and her hands clasped together. Meanwhile, Alena began to beat her drum and sang herself into a trance. All the others remained quiet and in devotion at first.
          When the drumming stopped, everyone looked expectantly at the noaidi.
          When she opened her eyes again, a small smile appeared and she said, “It's all right. He has found his peace.”
          And then the great ceremony began, with both women and men intoning a funeral yoik and singing Halvard's praises. Those who had a fighting stick with them struck their birch woods together in pairs and rhythmically to the chant, in tribute to Halvard as their best Skalastet fighter, thus producing the typical 'clack - clack' when two fight against each other.
          Elsa and Anna looked at each other in amazement, for the last time the men had only stomped their fighting sticks rhythmically on the ground. Even touching each other on the shoulder was not the case here, and yet. It was as Mattias said, a beautiful ceremony and the singing expressed affection and honour for Halvard, their friend. At the end, the women raised their heads and sang a little louder and more carrying into the night sky, until the singing slowly died away and absolute silence fell, interrupted only by the faint flickering noise of the torches.
          When Linnea and Ryder finally rose, the ceremony was over and one by one everyone went back to camp.
          Honeymaren came over to Anna and Elsa, looked around again briefly and then said to them “Thank you both for being there, especially you, Elsa. It meant a lot to me.” Then she nodded, turned away and walked back into camp as well. She walked slowly, keeping her head down while walking.
          The sisters looked at each other, puzzled at first, then gazed after her until she was out of sight and disappeared into the shadows of the night.
          “I don't know, but it almost sounded like a goodbye somehow,” Anna said quietly and Elsa nodded slowly and very thoughtfully.
~~~
Some kotas had been cleared for the guests from Arendelle to spend the night and lined with plenty of reindeer skins. Two of the royal bodyguards took positions in front of it as the sisters entered to go to sleep. They would take turns with the rest of the guard every four hours. The whole camp was quiet now and many of the fires had already been put out.
          When the sisters had undressed and covered themselves inside, they lay quietly next to each other, but thoughtfully with their eyes open. Both of them looked up at the flue, where a small section showed the sky with bright twinkling stars.
          At some point it was Anna who quietly wished Elsa good night, turned to the side and closed her eyes. Shortly afterwards, her light snoring could be heard.
          Elsa looked over at her, threw the reindeer blanket aside and stood up. She made an automatic gesture with her hand and in this way literally put on her dress in an instant with her ice magic. Then she left the hut and said quietly to the guard that she wanted to be alone and made her way to the Natturas' kota.
          She knew where the hut was and stood in front of it in the pale glow of the half moon, undecided. Should she call quietly for Honeymaren or just go in? Elsa didn't know where exactly her sleeping place was, so the chances were three to one of finding it right away.
          She decided on the latter and very carefully and quietly opened the flap. Elsa was lucky because the half moon was right behind her in the sky and its light showed Honeymaren's face in the sleeping place just ahead on the left.
youtube
          Elsa slipped inside and had Honeymaren's position and how many steps it was to her in her mind's eye as she closed the flap and quietly entered. Elsa felt her way to Honeymaren's head by means of the reindeer fur, listened to where she was breathing and gently covered her mouth.
          Honeymaren startled and Elsa breathed into her ear, “Be quiet, it's me, Elsa.” She felt the slight nod at her hand and let her up. Then Elsa held the flap open for her and for the first time saw Honeymaren's body completely naked in the moonlight before her. Elsa couldn't help but look at her and her gaze lingered on Honeymaren's sparse pubic hair under which her sex was clearly visible. Honeymaren paused for a moment, looked at her in surprise but without any shame, and only after a second or two put her gakti on. When she had slipped into her reindeer boots, she followed Elsa outside.
          “What are you doing here?” she asked in a whisper, her eyes wide.
          “I want to talk to you, Maren.”
          There it was again, her short name, the kind Elsa hadn't used since escaping the forest from Kolgrimr. It astonished Honeymaren all the more now.
          “All right, but not here.”
          “Then let's go to our beach.”
          Had Elsa actually just said “our beach“? Honeymaren couldn't help wondering, but nodded quickly and pulled Elsa with her.
          A little later, they were both sitting on the weathered old tree trunk lying in the sand across the sea, its bare, barkless wood reflecting the moonlight. Both looked out at the glittering, gentle waves and enjoyed this quiet moment of beauty for a few moments.
          Honeymaren turned briefly to the edge of the forest, first checking to see if anyone had followed them, before looking at Elsa with her eyebrows drawn together. Then she began to speak softly.
          “So I'm really curious now, Elsa. You show up in the middle of the night, sneak into my parents' kota just to talk to me? What's so important after you've been avoiding me all this time in Arendelle, not even being able to look me in the face. And now you even call me by my pet name again and say “our” beach. What has changed that you suddenly behave like this? And then, too, those scrutinising glances you've been directing at my nakedness!”
          “You're upset, I can tell,” Elsa agreed.
          “You bet I am! You have pushed me away, rejected me, even despised me.” She had spoken up a little louder than she meant to, but feelings couldn't just be suppressed like that.
          “I'm sorry. I didn't want all this. I was just … afraid,” Elsa confessed, lowering her head ruefully.
          “Afraid? Afraid of what? Of me, perhaps? Or of being touched …”
          Elsa's head jerked up and Honeymaren suddenly realised the truth, holding her hand in front of her mouth as she stared at her counterpart in deep realisation.
          “By the gods, I'm beginning to understand. I thought you …”
          Elsa shook her head slowly. “No, never, Maren.”
          “Have you made it yourself at least once … I mean…”
          Another shake of the head and a rather embarrassed look to go with it. Honeymaren had the impression Elsa's cheeks were turning rather red at the moment.
          “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be tactless, I …”
          “It's all right Maren. It's just that half of my life has been dominated by fear. Ever since I was eight years old and had to be separated from my dear sister for thirteen long years.”
          “But why is that? Who forced you to do such a thing? Family is one of the most important things in life. I can't even imagine being separated from them for so long.”
          “It's because of my ice magic. I was born with it. Everything was halfway fine at first, but then …”
          “What happened?”
          Elsa decided to tell Honeymaren everything and she listened very attentively, not interrupting her with a single word, her expression growing sadder as she did so.
          “Do you remember our evening in the hut after we went to the beach and I could no longer remember my life? I told you about someone important to me, someone I vaguely remembered, a face I couldn't recall. That was Anna. She was and is the most important person in my life. Unlike me, she is really outgoing and knows so many people, in fact everyone in the capital. And now with Kristoff she has experienced something that was previously foreign to me and that I never really thought about or missed. You can guess what it is, Maren.”
          “Love and tenderness towards another human being.”
          Elsa nodded. “Anyway, that's how it was until now.”
          Honeymaren drew in her breath and her heartbeat quickened on the spot.
          “Anna knows. I told her about your love for me in the night camp when we went to war and didn't know if we would survive. She … wouldn't mind such a relationship, she confessed. She had even suspected it herself with you.”
          “She is a really good and lovely person. I understand now how much she means to you and why. You must love her very much.”
          Elsa nodded, “She sees the potential in me that I never saw myself and was always afraid of.”
          “And now? Where do you go from here? How do you imagine the future now? Or will you perhaps even stay with us as Ahtohallan's fifth spirit?”
          “As for the latter, no. I promised Anna and she needs me. All is well here now after all and there is no longer any threat to you or the forest. Of course I'll check on things from time to time and with Nokk I'd be there in less than an hour. But as for the rest, I honestly don't know what to do. I have no experience and I'm not attracted to men in any way, especially not to their bodies. Just the idea …”
          “… scares you,” Honeymaren added, “I feel the same way, you know?”
          Elsa nodded, “But how do you deal with it and what experiences have you had with love in your young life?”
          “Honestly, none yet. But I feel it deep inside … this desire … and I dream about it and …”
          “About who and what …”
          “I dream of you, Elsa.”
          “And what are you dreaming about me? I mean … I can't really imagine.”
          “Hmm … you saw me naked earlier and … looking … down there. How did that make you feel? Or were you just embarrassed …”
          “No, no …, I …” Elsa stammered, unable to describe her feelings. Her body was reacting, in a place she hadn't expected, but how was she supposed to describe that to a beautiful young woman who probably had far more experience with it. Or maybe that was why she didn't need to? Elsa looked deeply into Honeymaren's eyes, her head probably flushed. She felt the heat rising inside her.

I had to remove the following scene because of the Tumblr community guidelines for 18+ content and created a new blog for it. If I had labelled this chapter as mature, my entire fanfic blog would only be visible to people over 18 and that was going too far for me. So only follow this link if you are over 18 and ready to read an explicit Elsamaren love scene.

Hey wanted to tell you I love seeing Rana on my dash! Can you tell little bit more about Rana? How does she view her relationship with her teammates? Does she have any family? What drew her towards Wyll?
oh stop this is so sweet omg 😭😭😭 Im glad you all like to see her bcus i love to show her off!! she's my little angel and the only tav i've had break past act 1!
I'll put most of this under the cut but I wanna put out a disclaimer that I came up with her background before learning abt anyone elses backstories so if she seems very similar to an origin character i swear its on accident 😭😭!!!!!!
Rana is a tiefling rogue assassin :)! Her backstory is that of a street urchin and after her mother died when she was very young, she spent a lot of time outside of her home. Her father wasn't very good at fathering and oftentimes they didn't even speak with one another despite living together in the same home. At the age of 12, she ends up stealing a little more than something that can be unnoticed and gets arrested. Upon her father hearing out her year-long sentence and hefty bail, he decides it's better to let her rot in prison for her sentence than to spend his little money on bailing her out.
Of course, Rana breaks herself out after 3 weeks and never returns to Baldur's Gate until the fateful day of the Nautiloid! She spends a lot of her time traveling the coast, running through different guilds and vowing to never rely on anyone.
With her backstory out of the way, she has a very interesting relationship with everyone! 😭 So for those who don't know, I played this story with my darling dearest bestie @katagawajr who has her own character Vaeril. To put her in Jordan's words, Vaeril's very much a disney princess-esque, think Anna from Frozen or Rapunzel, or if you're familiar with Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle!! (where as you have Rana who despite being fire coded is very much Elsa-like)
Tumblr media
(and sometimes she teams up in a detective noir episode alongside Private Wyll Ravengard to uncover the mysterious explosive toys of Baldur's Gate.... but thats a side quest) (yes it's chaos).
Moving onto Origins, She's got a very funny raport with Gale. He's an obvious know-it-all but unlike most egotistical men Rana's run into, he has the facts to prove it. For my Blands mutuals, she's got a very Fiona and Rhys type of dynamic where they do get along but you wouldn't believe it from the amount they bicker. Vaeril also romanced Gale in this playthru so she's very much >:( hurt my best friend and ill kill you wizard boy.
Karlach is Rana's best friend. They have very similar backstories and although they didn't know one another as kids, they're very protective of one another. Lae'zel is also one of Rana's closest friends even though she's obviously more reserved, they get along very well on the battlefield and rely on one another. Halsin makes Rana nervous because he's just So Sweet and Asty is pretty much entertaining (they argue abt the best techniques to take people down quietly ofc). Shadowheart and her also get along albeit it's a bit more reserved because of Rana's intrinsic and initial mistrust of familal figures.
haha. onto Wyll. Which is probably the funniest of funniest stories. Originally, Rana was... very put off. On one hand, she's heard of the blade of frontiers and genuinely thinks what he does is great, but on the other hand... Wyll has a heart of gold and it scares her. When they have their talk on the beach in Act One, Rana sees that he's not this 'perfect hero' and that he has doubts just like anyone else- he put on a front just like she did. Keeping people at arms length was just... natural.
So yea, they develop from their as they do in canon and albeit his sweet nature, Rana's incredibly shy abt their relationship and answers virtually no questions unless pestered by Vaeril :). They wear Lover's Caress rings to protect one another, and once they get to Baldur's Gate, Rana is quite... stand offish with Ulder and anyone else who dares to be rude to Wyll.
Ok i'll cut my essay short but THANK YOU FOR ASKING!!!I love talking abt her im just . so incredibly shy. but i truly appreciate anyone who made it this far down the ask ily!! 😭😭😭😭

She can tell that they’re talking about her (or half-talking, who knows) the moment she steps out of the room. They could be trying to re-evaluate their current situation, perhaps, which isn’t precisely what she’d been hoping for. She is a guest, but she is also an intruder; she is welcomed, but she also feels very much the third wheel—whether they want to see it that way or not. Elsa swirls the water in her glass, thinking of Anna and poor (past, current) decisions and True Love gone horribly, horribly wrong, and what it means for all of them now.
So much for finding a solution.
Elsa drinks and refills her small glass two times before she considers herself ready to venture back out and watch the easy, friendly interactions of her sister and her sister’s roommate. When she shuts off the tap, she realizes that someone else has already entered the kitchen.
“Hey,” says Jack, gently, as soon as she has the courage to turn around. He looks twitchy and uncertain, and a little off-balance. He keeps trying to stick his hands in his pockets, only to realize that his pajama pants have none. “How’re you doing?”
Elsa’s smile is genuine, if not very tired; it’s late, and she’s not really enjoying herself, after all. She opens her mouth to make an excuse, then realizes—there’s no need. What comes out is a sigh instead.
“Sorry,” she laughs, then hums. “I’m actually pretty tired.”
It’s a little disconcerting—and also a tiny bit sweet—to see how quickly and how powerfully Jack associates this feeling of Elsa’s with his personal interference this evening. She can tell from the gape of his mouth, the wince to his eyes, and by the slant to his shoulders that he feels guilty, which is—well. Which is currently how Elsa is feeling too, so now what are they supposed to do about it?
Jack’s face contorts, then goes unhelpfully blank. Dissatisfied with his absence of pockets, Jack instead hooks his thumbs in the waistband of his pants. He does not seem to realize the effect this has on the amount of skin visible at his stomach… particularly the lower abdominals, where they cut into the faintest shape of a V over his hips. Before she can tear her eyes away, she catches the unsettling sight of a fine dusting of hair down his navel, disappearing into the low-slung, pulled-down waistband of his pants. Her eyes jerk back to his, prepared to fight or fly, but Jack is not looking at her directly.
“I promise we’re usually… more fun than this?” Jack scratches at the back of his head, uneasy and avoiding her gaze. “Or, like… I don’t know. I’ve just… had a weird day, is all? I really didn’t mean to take over your night.”
Elsa looks down into her water. “That’s very… sweet,” she concedes. “But it’s not necessary. You didn’t do anything wrong, especially not by coming home to your own apartment.”
“Yeah, well. I mean.” He shrugs. “You’re bored.”
His voice is calm, but his posture claims that he is personally affronted by this. Like this is a matter of personal responsibility. Elsa finds herself grinning a little in amusement; it’s not like she doesn’t know what that feels like.
“I like being able to see your friendship in action,” she claims teasingly, but Jack is not having any of it.
“Yeah, well, what about you? I mean—where’s your action?”
Elsa raises a single brow.
“That’s not—that’s not what I meant.” Jack heaves an exasperated sigh. “Look, I just wanted to come in and apologize, because I’m feeling kind of like a selfish douchebag, and I just wanted to let you know that there’s a spot on the floor with your name on it, if you want it.” He seems to think better of himself. “Next to Anna, I mean. On her side.”
Elsa nods, slow and sage. “Very appropriate,” she manages, without cracking too much of a grin.
“Yeah. Yes. Right.”
Elsa waits a beat. “All right. Thank you.”
“Course,” says Jack, and stands there.
She nods slowly to herself, and tries not to drown in the silence. She can feel the familiar stirrings of panic begin to wake inside her, but two deep breaths help her to recenter before the feeling has a chance to emerge. Jack seems to be waiting for an answer, she realizes.
“I’ll just be another minute,” she announces awkwardly, and Jack trips over himself as he straightens and turns back to return to the living room.
“Right. Totally. Yeah, we’ll see you—just a minute.”
Elsa is left alone in the kitchen once more.

November/October 2023 Contest Submission #1: Pull of the Tide
Words: 3,000 Setting: mAU Lemon: no Content: angst, Anna teasing Elsa about sex dreams
*****
Anna doesn’t slam the driver’s side door. Normally, she would – it’s been a long, hot day in an even hotter car with no AC – but she closes it as gently as she can, takes the few steps around to the passenger side door, opens it, and crouches.
“Elsa?” Her hand settles on her sister’s bare knee, and she smiles when those crystal clear, blue eyes flutter open and settle on her in sleepy recognition. “Hey.”
“Mh.” There’s a sluggishly hidden yawn, and Elsa takes a second to blink at their surroundings. “What time is—Anna.” A low, exhausted groan. “You were supposed to wake me hours ago!”
“You just said you don’t know what time it is.”
“But I do know the difference between sunlight and moonlight.” Two fingers come up to tweak Anna’s slightly sunburned nose, and Elsa sighs. “You’ve been driving since lunch.”
“Yeah, well… heat’s harder on you.” Anna pushes herself to a stand; crossing her arms and stepping away from the car. “And maybe I feel guilty for getting us lost in the first place.”
“You also made sure we had a full tank of gas this morning, not to mention several bottles of water.” A soft ‘click’ signals the seatbelt being undone, and it doesn’t take long before Elsa is standing beside her; still sounding a little sleep-drunk, but peering through the narrow tree line with interest. “And now you’ve found a lake?”
“Near a road that’s actually paved, even if it’s patchy as hell.” With a grimace, Anna pulls her sweat-dampened hair free of its low ponytail. “It’s progress, right? Maybe we’ll get signal again soon.” It’s her turn to sigh this time. “Even if we have to sleep in the car.”
“Or you could sleep while I drive.” An arm comes up to curl around her shoulders, and Anna lets her sister pull her into a side-hug while she tries not to notice how it makes her heart climb up the inside of her throat until it’s basically using her uvula as a punching bag. “I think that’s only fair.”
“Bossy.” Anna nudges her with an elbow mostly to have an excuse to extract herself, and starts off towards the lake before lazily tossing the keys over her shoulder. “Coming?”
A muffled jingle tells her that they’re caught. “Warn a girl,” Elsa grouses, and there’s the soft, hurried crunch of her footsteps, followed by the slamming of the car door and the low ‘clunk’ of it locking.
“Right.” Anna settles the hair tie around her wrist before grabbing the bottom hem of her t-shirt and pulling it over her head in one go. “We haven’t seen another human being since this morning, but sure; can’t be too careful. Bambi and his friends may have taken to a life of crime to make ends m—hey!” The definite snap of something against her backside makes her hop forward, but at least she doesn’t trip over anything. “Rude.”
“Uh huh.” The tank top has settled over Elsa’s arm by the time she catches up, and Anna firmly keeps her eyes on the lake. “Is this where you tell me what’s been going on with you, or is it still not the right time?”
‘The right time’ would ideally be never, so Anna veers off when they clear the tree line; heading for a rocky outcrop that slopes up out of the ground and into the water, and trying to not hear the soft sigh behind her.
It had been a good idea at the time. A short(ish) road trip for just the two of them; not only to mark Anna completing her first year of college, but to let Elsa do at least one ‘wild’ thing before she officially entered adult life. Time for them to rebuild the connection that had admittedly stretched a little thin, and to get to know each other better as adults.
And if there’s one thing Anna knows? If you’re crushing hard on someone, nothing will kill that crush faster than forced, close quarters and unpredictable stressors. It worked every other time, so of course it isn’t working now that she really, really needs it to.
Anna toes off her dusty sneakers and sets them on a relatively not-dusty patch of rock. Somewhere behind her, she can hear her sister go through much the same process, and she concentrates on unbuttoning her shorts when a long, slender arm deposits Elsa’s small pile of clothing – much more neatly folded – in her peripheral vision.
She could try to think of it as Elsa in a bikini instead of Elsa in her underwear, but… yeah, that wouldn’t help. So no; better to avoid the issue as long as possible.
The soft sound of moving water is another excellent reason to keep her back turned, and Anna takes the time to fold her clothes properly because it’s as good an excuse as any to focus on something else.
And she might as well not have, of course, she realizes when she finally does turn, because putting off the sight doesn’t make the reality of it hit her any less hard.
Elsa is submerged up to her waist, and stands there under the moonlight with her eyes closed and a serene expression on her face. The overheated flush she was sporting has receded, and only continues to fade further under Anna’s watchful gaze until her sister’s skin regains its normal, pale tones and she looks – for all the world – like the moon personified come down for a lazy, late-night swim.
Then Elsa lowers herself fully into the water. She cranes her head back until only her face and a section of her throat is visible, and the water surrounding her moves gently as she brings her hands up to rake through her submerged hair.
It must feel nothing short of blissful, because the soft, pleased groan travels through the still, night air with alarming clarity, and Anna about swallows her own tongue.
So, revision: it hadn’t been a good idea at the time. It was a fucking awful idea then and it’s an even worse one now, because if Elsa is the moon, then Anna is the tide; separate but connected, and endlessly, helplessly pulled to her in ways she has no hope of controlling.
… and that is way too much teenage angst for someone pushing 20, so Anna takes a deep breath, strides into the water and dunks herself; crouching on the lake bed with her arms wrapped around her knees, and hoping that maybe the cool water will help clear her head.
It would be easier if it was only a matter of desire, or if they weren’t sisters. But it isn’t and they are, and so the only option Anna has is to shove it all down as far as she can, and hope that eventually, it’ll go away.
(It hasn’t yet, and not for a lack of trying.)
At least in a few more weeks, Elsa will be starting the job she landed before even graduating because of course she did, which means that she’ll be moving. Far enough away that they probably won’t see each other outside the traditional holidays, which should make everything easier.
(Except that it will make everything much, much harder.)
She’s perfectly content to stay underwater for as long as her lung capacity will allow – avoidance has worked well enough so far and she sees no need to mess with an at least relatively successful formula – but Elsa, of course, is a factor too.
She gets the warning of the water moving before there are hands closing around her upper arms, and then she is hoisted back above the surface and into the very vivid reality of her older sister standing a scant foot in front of her; barely decent, dripping wet, and platinum hair turned almost silver in the moonlight.
“Anna.” Those gentle hands release her arms and lift to cradle her face instead, and Elsa’s eyes are pained and frightened and pleading. “Will you just tell me what I did?”
“… did?” There is least a small blessing to be found in how those hands are keeping her eyes focused on her sister’s face. “What are you talking about?”
“I don’t know.” Elsa’s voice tightens in frustration, and her fingers curl until their tips are pressing into the skin behind Anna’s jaw. “You’ve been so distant and quiet this entire trip, and I just—” A pause, and slow, trembling exhale that warms the lower half of Anna’s face. “… did I say something in my sleep? Today, or earlier?”
“Wh—” Anna blinks, but considers the question; for one because Elsa is the one asking, and for another because it’s something to think about that isn’t a halfway-panicked loop of ‘eyes up’. “I—well, you mumbled about chocolate, but what else is new, right?”
“… right.” There is nothing new about that, and yet even in the moonlight it’s clear that Elsa is blushing.
That’s another something to think about that’s at least less to do with her being nearly naked, and Anna seizes it gratefully. “Elsa, did you have a naughty dream?” The deepening blush and abrupt widening of those eyes is answer enough. “Oh my god, you did!”
“I did not!” Her sister releases her – pulls her hands away as if burned, actually – and takes a few staggering steps back that makes the water slosh around them. “Who even calls it that?!”
“You had a naughty dream!” Anna wades after her; gleeful in the way that only a younger sibling can be when tormenting an older one. “While right next to me!”
“There was no—” Her sister is burying her face in her hands and retreating until her back hits a boulder that stands taller than her. “—s-sex dream!”
“Uh huh, sure.” She is trying to contain her grin as she stalks after her, but probably failing. “You know the only one calling it a sex dream is you, right?”
Elsa makes a sound somewhere between a groan and a whine and presses her face even harder into her own hands, and Anna… is sort of stuck between feeling bad for her and being intensely curious.
So over-the-top ridiculous it is. “Who was it about? What happened in it?” She’s nose to nose – or nose to knuckle, rather – with her mortified sister now, and leans on the boulder with her hands on either side of Elsa’s shoulders. “Did you dream about a professor of yours? Multiple professors, even?” Another groan-whine combo. “Elsa, did you dream about a gangbang?!”
“No!” comes the yelp, and the pale fingers part enough for Elsa to send her a horrified stare. “Oh my G— Anna!”
“Then it can’t be that bad, can it?”
This time, the sound is just a groan, though it’s definitely heartfelt. “I swear, you shave at least a month off my life every year.”
“Excuse you. Regular cardio is healthy.” When Elsa’s hands finally shift enough for her to do it, Anna gives the end of her sister’s nose a tap with a fingertip; idly appreciating the contrast with her own, deeper tan. “I’m adding to your lifespan, if anything.” The definite glower she gets in response makes her smile. “So who were you dreaming about?”
Somehow, Elsa actually pales. “Not telling,” she mutters, and pushes weakly at Anna’s freckled shoulders. “Would you move, already?!”
Anna leans harder on her own hands; bending her arms at the elbows until their faces are so close they’re practically breathing the same air because this is normal sisterhood: One needling the other over something embarrassing until one gives up or the other gives in. It’s simple and innocent and playful, and it is in no way making her forget that they’re both standing there half-naked.
“Oh, no you don’t.” She works to maintain her best ‘annoying younger sibling’ expression while Elsa looks at anything but her. “Spill. It was someone inappropriate, obviously. Who?”
Silence.
“I’m gonna start guessing if you don’t tell me,” Anna reminds her cheerfully. “You know I will.”
A red-faced glare is the answer to that, along with more silence.
“Okay.” A shrug, and she tilts her head back to study the night sky. “Someone inappropriate. Not a professor of yours, and I’m guessing not one of mine, either. A fellow student wouldn’t be inappropriate even by your standards—” She ignores the offended noise. “— so it’s someone you think you shouldn’t have those thoughts about.”
“Anna…” The tone is wavering and has a definite, pleading note to it. “Stop. Please.”
It stops being funny, and Anna sobers. “Okay,” she promises - softer now – and straightens until she’s no longer invading her sister’s space quite as much. “Okay. I’m sorry.” And she is sorry and wants to drop the subject, but while her vocal chords obey for once, her mind is absolutely whirling.
Because who is it? Who would Elsa not only be so into, but also be so clearly ashamed of having feelings for?
And Anna, while Elsa slumps against the stone with an unsteady exhale, feels something in her just stop and start, because she can really only think of one option.
“Elsa?” She feels the water move when she shifts; hears her brain screaming at her to shutupshutupshutUP because she could be wrong, but her heart was always the one ultimately in charge. “If— would you be totally disgusted if I kissed you?”
Elsa stills completely and then jerks her head up to stare at her, and Anna is acutely aware of everything. The slow sloshing of the lake’s surface, the silence between them because they’ve both stopped breathing, and how her own heart is frozen solid and also pounding its way through her ribcage.
Something about the moonlight makes the faint freckles on Elsa’s cheeks stand out more, Anna notes somehow; distracted as she is by the fact that she can see her own reflection in her sister’s eyes.
There are several strands of hair sticking to her cheek – coppery red turned almost brown by moisture and low lighting – and Anna would move them if she could make herself move at all.
“No,” is the answer; in a tone that sounds like Elsa is stuck on the same frozen-still, faster-than-light rollercoaster. “But… why—”
Anna kisses her before she can lose her nerve; halfway expecting to be pushed away even if she’s pretty sure how Elsa meant the ‘no’.
She isn’t. Elsa does freeze in place again for a split-second eon, but then… then she shivers – head to toe, hard enough for Anna to feel it – and there are arms curling around her and the chill of the water contrasting with the warmth of her sister’s skin, and for a long, exhilarating moment, Anna forgets how to even think.
But she does remember eventually, and draws in a slow breath that tastes like Elsa. “This… feels pretty close to a point of no return, right?”
“I passed the point of no return when I realized that I couldn’t kiss anyone without wondering what it would be like to kiss you.” The admission is so quiet that Anna has to strain to hear it at all, and she watches Elsa’s throat work in a hard swallow. “Going back hasn’t been an option for a very long time.”
A long, shaky breath, and Anna lets her head drop forward until her face is pressing into Elsa’s shoulder; curling her fingers around the edge of her sister’s waist while tender, achingly familiar arms pull her closer, and feeling the press of a lingering kiss against her temple as she takes a moment to just… process.
“Yeah.” Her voice is hoarse and halfway muffled by soft skin. “I know what you mean. I just—” A pause and another long breath, though at least this one isn’t as shaky. “I don’t want this to be something we regret. You know?”
“I know.” Gentle fingers tug at her hair until Anna has to straighten, and then they’re forehead to forehead and those eyes are all she can see. “For what it’s worth, I doubt I’ll ever regret anything as long as you’re involved.”
That’s worth a lot, actually, and Anna smiles. “That’s kind of cheesy.”
“It’s very cheesy.” Elsa’s chuckle is little more than a puff of air. “That doesn’t mean it isn’t true.” There’s a languid touch circling her ear before Elsa’s hand settles on her shoulder. “Should we stop?”
Going by the tone of Elsa’s voice and the look in her eyes, the question is completely serious, and Anna takes the time to give it the equally serious consideration it deserves. If she said yes, she has no doubt that Elsa would not only accede to her wishes, but that she’d do so with a smile.
She can see it in her eyes, if she looks close enough; a subtle tightness behind her irises that signals at once fear, understanding and preemptive acceptance, and that tells her how much this – how much she – means to Elsa better than words ever could.
So instead of answering verbally, Anna kisses her, and God, the sound Elsa makes when she does. It’s breathless and relieved and so raw it’s almost animal, and her entire body actually shifts down a few inches when her knees unlock.
Anna, in response, presses her harder against the stone and kisses her again; light and gentle and tender while Elsa’s breathing stutters against her mouth.
“I’m not going anywhere,” she promises, and watches those eyes well up and spill over while Elsa’s fingers tremble against her shoulders. “I want this. I want us.”
Elsa holds her so tightly it almost hurts; buries her face in Anna’s hair and lets those quiet, hitched breaths warm her ear in fits and starts.
In return, Anna holds her just as tight. She kisses Elsa’s shoulder and throat and gets it more than her sister probably realizes.
It won’t be easy, she knows. But few things worth having ever are.

Anna: *is neglected and abandoned for majority of her life, starting at like age 5*
Anna: *runs into someone who actually sees Her and notices Her and doesn't act like she's invisible or a burden for the first time in over a decade*
Anna: hey sister I desperately want to notice me and will accept even the tiniest bit of attention from, here is a man I just met that is, *checks notes*, actually talking to me. I'm going to marry him.
Elsa: that's ridiculous! You just met him.
Anna: ~~yeah and in the few hours I've been with him he has talked to me more than you (or anyone else really) have in like 13 ish years~~ Oh haha yeah but like... I Know him and he's a prince!
Elsa: No. I don't approve.
Anna: ~~who the hell are you to approve??? You. Don't. Talk. To. Me.~~ Oh. Uh. Well can we talk about it? (Definitely is not desperate and terrified to lose the tiniest shred of a shred of a relationship she has with her sister) *Reaches out for the attention and affection she is so starved of*
Elsa: *freaks out, reveals giant secret, runs away*
Anna: holy *shit*... I gotta go make sure she's okay!! ~~I gotta make sure I don't lose her.~~
Anna: *goes after Elsa and gets shamed by another stranger for A going after her and B 'falling for a man she just met'*
Elsa: *rejects her more and tells Anna she is better off without her*
Anna: *heartbroken cause the last member of her family, the person she idolizes and so desperately wants love from, Keeps Rejecting Her.*
Anna: *leaves heart broken ~~and heart frozen~~ to go back to the only person this whole night who has shown her undivided 'love', attention, care, affection*
Hans: *is an asshole out of no where????*
Anna: *heartbroken AGAIN because she really can't trust anyone and maybe it's her own fault she's so unlovable.*
Elsa: *Is gonna be killed*
Anna: *is on the brink of literal death and when it comes to going after the stranger who is actually pretty nice and kind and likes her for her and treats her with respect vs the person who she has longed for her entire life even though she keeps pushing her away, she goes after her sister because despite it all she still wants Her love, hell just her Attention above anything else.*
The movie: This is true love 🥰
Me, definitely not projecting my own life onto this at twelve: Hold up this hurts a lot and I relate to these characters wait-
My sister: This movie is mine and only I get to sing and only I get to love it cause it's mine. But if you sing it perfectly and never mess up any of the words or notes I guess I'll let you watch with me.
Me: Really???? 😍🥺🥰🥺😍
...
Okay so this was going to be a critique about how Anna is seen as naive and dumb and it is used against her the entire movie without ever acknowledging *why* she's like that. And how a lot of fans don't see it either. But then it really just turned into me trauma dumping lmao.
But seriously. I feel like most of the neglect and abuse talk ends up being towards Elsa cause she visibly struggles more. And Anna hides it because she has to. Her parents were so worried about elsa that they didnt have time for her pain too. So it's hidden. But it is most definitely there. And it deserves to be mentioned and talked about.
Also this is a very common situation for emotionally neglected people to find themselves in. They cling onto someone showing the slightest bit of decency and believe it's good and amazing cause when you're starved, you'll eat poison if it might help for just a moment. Cause something is better than nothing. And when the something is bad and hurting, the pain of going back to nothing is worse. So you're stuck with a Hans believing it's what you deserve because of years of neglect and abuse.
But yeah. Anna is just dumb and naive. Definitely no trauma on her end.
Bottom line:
Anna deserves better. In canon and from fandom. And ESPECIALLY from Disney.

Hey if anyone can help me find the OG post that said Elsa’s power is Magic and Anna’s power is Love, that would be great because I love that theory and I have been walking around with it in my head for years but I feel weird talking about it when I can’t remember where on this hell site it came from

Chapter 32! Since I haven't seen rotg as much as frozen, and therefore I don't know the script, it's gonna give me a bit more freedom to write more jelsa storyline stuff.
@gyubby99 I'm sorry! Take this next chapter for a peace offering!
Years passed by, Anna became queen and Elsa was the fifth spirit. After around 10 years, elsa realized she wasn't aging, but anna was. Considering Elsa was the magical side of the bridge and Anna was the mortal side, elsa realized that Anna was able to die, but elsa wasn't. Still. Elsa almost went mad when more years passed by and Anna had died due to old age. It almost killed Elsa. Dying from a broken heart was not something that should be possible, and yet it was. But elsa couldn't die, so the efforts were uneffective.
After Anna's death, elsa spent most of her time searching for Jack.
Meanwhile, Jack was in the United States 100 years after the events with elsa had occurred. No one else saw him. And he came to the conclusion that he was also immortal.
More years passed, and 100 years turned to 150, and 150 to 200 and so on and so fourth.
One late winter night, Jack was placing frost everywhere, and when he hung from a pole to look at his handiwork he smiled. The wind picked up. "Hey gale!" He shouted. "Take me home!" And with that, he let go of the pole, thw wind sending him flying into the sky. Jack had mastered his powers by now, and he was able to fly so smoothly that that could have held a person and still be able to fly. Unlike almost 300 years ago when he could barely catch Elsa. As he flew, Jack hollered. Enjoying the wind in his hair. He flew to a lake that looked incredibly similar to the one he came from, and he skated on it lightly, using the wind for leverage and accidentally blowing a book out of a kids hand. "Oh, that looks interesting. Good book?" Jack asked as he leaned to look at the book. the kid went to pick it up, not saying a word to Jack. Over the last few hundreds of years, Jack had taken to talking to himself like that with the hope that someone would possibly see him. However, his attempts never succeeded. Other kids ran past, yelling and shouting about how excited they were for the snow day. "You're welcome!" Jack exclaimed with a smile. As the kids walked away, Jack followed them.
Elsa had been alive for a few hundred years. When Anna died, she figured Jack had died as well, and so she spent her time getting jobs, making and saving money, until she was finally able to pay for a house in America, where she had been living the last 90 years. Alone. Without Jack. Now of course Elsa had started trying to date again after a while, but she never got passed the first date before she thought back to Jack. No one was him. And no one could stand in his place. She quickly figured out that he would always be the only one. Even if he wasn't there anymore.

hey u know that frozen short called frozen fever? Where Elsa gets a cold while trying to make the perfect birthday for Anna and whenever she sneezes these little snow men start popping up everywhere?
imagine that but Miguel got a cold and V. is trying to convince him to rest but he persists and says he’s fine, and whenever he sneezes these mini miguelitos start popping up everywhere and causing havoc in the society.
It gets to the point where V. physically restrains him and takes them to their room on campus. The rest of the spiders can deal with the Miguelitos, they're capable. Lyla has plenty of photos.
She doesn't let go of Miguel. She doesn't trust him to stay in bed, so she just has all 6 arms and 2 legs wrapped around him. They both sleep.
And then, Olivia catches that cold.
And so, the cycle continues. The only difference is: she knows how to chill (mostly).

Frozen is a Much Stranger Movie Than I Remember: A Retrospective
I feel like Frozen is one of those movies where there’s two camps: It’s indefensively bad because it was obnoxiously popular and there’s nothing good about it, or ignoring the haters because they’re haters and loving every piece of it (or camp three who don’t give a damn one way or another). The music was all over the internet ad nauseam, yes, but I see a different problem with Frozen:
Anna is our hero and this movie has no idea what to do with her, so it punishes her.
Frozen’s musical numbers do a lot of the legwork to make it seem like a better story than it is, and people have ripped apart Hans in the decade plus since its release. We all know he’s a terrible twist villain consistently at the top of “worst twist villains” lists. We all know Elsa was originally supposed to be the villain but “Let it Go” sent the writers into a panic spiral and they just couldn’t bear keeping her the bad guy. We know the parents are kinda shady? And the movie just ignores that.
But upon a rewatch because “Love is an Open Door” was stuck in my head… the premise for so much of this movie is so much weirder and nonsensical than I remember and in all the discourse I’ve seen over the years, it gets mostly ignored in favor of attacking the songs and Hans.
The prologue (after the ice cutters bit) where young Elsa and Anna are building the snowman and Elsa accidentally almost murders her sister, which leads to the rush to the rock trolls and the Worst Parenting Advice in a Disney movie.
Side note: Baby Elsa and Anna could be triplets with Vanellope von Schweetz, they have the exact same faces. And it’s the middle of the night when they’re supposed to be sleeping but Elsa sleeps with a headband on and their parents apparently also sleep in full royal regalia, complete with a tiara for Queen Whats-her-face?
Then you get the “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” montage where the parents die, Anna grows up, and Elsa sinks further into paranoid anxiety. All of this sets up Anna’s clueless naivete that leads her into insta-romancing Hans and ignoring all of the warning signs (that weren’t there but the movie punishes her anyway).
Anna and Elsa did not grow up as orphaned peasant girls living in the countryside. Anna is isolated from her sister, yes, but she lives in a castle filled with guards, maids, kitchen staff, and presumably has an army of tutors who educate her on booksmarts, how to ride her horse, how to be a proper court lady, and how to eventually lead the country Elsa abandons.
A regent of some kind is running Arendelle until Elsa’s of age to become queen, right? Where is he? Or she?
Where the f*ck are all these servants?
Did Ana not make a single friend with any of her maids’ daughters or sons? Does she not have a tutor or teacher she absolutely adores? How did this entire castle not have a single person to mentor this poor naive girl in how to have interpersonal relationships so their future queen doesn’t get manipulated into marriage by a gaslighter?
If I’m a citizen of Arendelle and Hans becomes my new king and he’s absolutely terrible in every way, and I hear the reason why is “well our immature queen (who we didn’t educate at all on politicking) got duped and bamboozled into marrying him with zero resistance or question,” I’m not going to be too happy with my government.
Anna is kept in the dark by Elsa and her entire invisible and inconsequential staff of servants and is punished by the narrative when she tries to reconnect with her sister, desperately wanting to rekindle their relationship. She literally had her memory wiped. Where’s all the intervening adults saying “uh, hey, Anna, Elsa doesn’t actually hate you, she’s just a danger to herself and everyone around her and we’re complicit in doing nothing to help her.”
Elsa makes it clear she wants nothing to do with her sister in her little ice castle, and Anna refuses to let her go. Then Elsa intentionally hurts her to make her leave and every other character basically says “I told you so,” as if this is her fault.
She’s punished further by the narrative when Hans, the guy who seems amazing to everyone, including the audience, randomly and inexplicably betrays her. Anna is not given the agency to figure this out for herself. She doesn’t beat Hans to it, realizing something doesn’t add up and have the epiphany that she “can’t marry a man she just met”.
Disney, you can still have a twist villain and let the heroes do their due diligence in discovering so, even seconds before they would have revealed themselves.
So Anna gets suckerpunched and Elsa has to go save her and we get the little Elsa redemption and Anna gets to punch Hans off the boat and still fall in love with a man she just met, Kristoff. Movie’s over, happy ending, roll credits.
Frozen sits at the cusp of that Disney era where they’re trying to be all cool and self-aware by insulting their own movies, and by proxy, the audience who loves said movies, with the whole “bashing the insta-romance,” in a serious case of lampshading.
The messages this movie I think tries to send are quite explicitly stated:
“Only true love can thaw a frozen heart” (which absolutely should have been Elsa’s frozen heart, not Anna’s)
“Some people are worth melting for”
“You can’t marry a man you just met”
The problem is that Frozen botches every single one.
Without any indication that Elsa is capable of being “saved” or even wanting to be “saved” Anna gives her life in the name of an apparently unrequited love. Anna might have not fully given up on her sister, but given the evidence presented to her, she really should have, for her own safety. Some people are not worth melting for, Anna, and your castle of thumb-twiddlers failed you on understanding that.
The writers realized that without Elsa as their villain, they needed something in her place, and that mutated into Hans, but they had a much better villain from the start: The parents.
The parents who are ashamed of their own daughter’s violent condition and instead of treating her and helping her, they force her to hide and smother her ice, rip away her sister, and make her feel compelled to isolate herself in her room for fear of hurting people.
The parents who left no instruction or contingency plan in the event of their untimely demise, no senior staffer to take over raising their daughters, no adult figure to help them both become effective leaders.
Anna is our hero and her story boils down to “young girl nearly dies in an innocent accident caused by sister, has her memory of the incident erased and her sister then inexplicably isolated from her, believing the sister to hate her for no reason. She grows up, apparently, with no friends and no mentors and when presented with the chance to finally reconnect with her estranged sibling, through no fault of her own, causes said sibling to erupt in a violent panic attack and flee the premises. Meanwhile, after a touch-starved and emotionally stunted childhood, she quickly falls for the apparent man of her dreams who’s perfect in every way, and she leaves him in charge while she chases after her equally victimized sister on a dangerous quest. The sister, predictably, hurts her again, everyone says “I told you so,” and the man who she thought was perfect is suddenly a completely different person who takes advantage of her naivete because… girls in love are dumb? She nearly dies hoping her now-abusive sister wants to save her and when she does, she’s immediately forgiven.”
I’m not going to talk about Frozen 2 here, because it treats Anna no better. This movie is just baffling in its messaging.
Without properly addressing the Terrible Parenting Advice, Frozen suggests Elsa’s parents did the right thing, or at least the best they could, in traumatizing and isolating their daughter and teaching her to hate herself and fear her powers.
Without any evidence of Hans’ true intentions, Anna is either a dumbass for not being clairvoyant or, what, she should learn to be skeptical of everyone she meets out of fear that they’ll become another Hans?
By making Elsa freeze Anna after finally liberating herself from her trauma shackles, all Elsa’s anxious fears about hurting the people she loves with her ice come true. Because the plot resolves with Elsa saving Anna, instead of the other way around, Elsa must hurt her sister before she can help her, and in 5 seconds she’s cured.
If I was going to rewrite Frozen, since Disney sure loves generational trauma now instead of actual villains, my Frozen would look something like this:
Our hero Anna and our villain Elsa are royal sisters. Keep the same first 30 mins or so, up to Elsa fleeing the castle. Anna, after being kept in the dark by her parents and servants for her whole life, must uncover why her sister has these powers and why her parents, whom she loved and adored, abused Elsa. Elsa becomes the victim she is, still gets her “Let it Go” moment, but instead of the “it” being just her shackles, it’s the abuse of her parents, and her coming to terms with understanding just what they did to her and how wrong they were.
Anna then gets to chase after her and you still get the oopsie where Elsa attacks her, but this time it’s a near-miss that still terrifies her and sends Anna away. The missing parental figure who should have raised her and Anna (but still had their own flaws, and could have done better), stays behind and starts to break through Elsa’s frozen heart and helps her understand that her condition does not control her, that she can still fix this, that she isn’t the villain her parents made her out to be. Elsa doesn’t want to listen, she’s convinced nothing can now be done. She is doomed, but returns home anyway to face the consequences of her actions at the ball.
Anna returns home and figures out that Hans is phony and means to betray her and she beats him to it, regaining her agency along the rest of the plot and maturing in her understanding of the complex and conflicting depth of the people in her life. And it’s Anna, not Elsa, who breaks the “frozen heart” of her sister, by still loving her unconditionally despite her ice, and it’s Anna’s love, not Elsa’s, that helps Elsa control her powers and learn to appreciate them.
And, she can still have Kristoff in the end, why not?
TL;DR, Frozen is the product of catchy musical numbers too expensive to cut because they’ve already been animated, dominating the storytelling process that results in a troubling, nonsensical plot with mixed and frankly disturbing messages. But hey, they sold some Elsa dolls and dresses and racked up billions of views on YouTube, didn’t they?
