i went to open up my notion page for nace x musical theatre edits to add the bandstand ones, and i saw the lyrics for my dyin' ain't so bad gif set (that i still need to work on) but specifically looked at "a love like ours don't happen twice" which is true because it's their last lives, and they're choosing to spend it together and i am a WRECK

Imagine Derek mentioning he's thinking of getting a dog and everyone's like 'you'll have that pup trained up in no time! An FBI dog? He'll be perfect.'

And Derek feels his first bit of doubt that isn't related to dog care while they work interstate.

And then he gets the dog, and just wow, it is unruly. But it's still a puppy really, and they're bound to be a bit wild, aren't they? It'll be fine and the dog will be obedient and lovely.

'Dog troubles, huh? Just teething issues; you'll set him straight in no time!' And then there's jokes about him running the fitness test and his dog being too tired to misbehave and he hopes no one notices his new shoes have a bite mark in them (his old shoes are no longer wearable).

As time goes by, he grows more and more insecure and his stubborn, fool, beloved, disobedient Clooney is causing havoc. The neighbours made noise complaints for his barking during fireworks and storms while Derek was at work, and he dug a hole into the other neighbours' yard when Derek was late to feed him dinner.

Can he even do this? Is he just a bad dog owner?

And then, unexpectedly, Hotch shows up. Despite Derek's excuses, Hotch makes his way inside and surveys the damage. Derek drapes himself over a wooden chair, like trying to hide chew marks on the leg of it was really going to make a difference.

Clooney jumps up on Hotch once, and looks thoroughly scolded at Hotch's look and stern 'down'.

And somehow, he and Clooney are doing obedience training with Hotch that he was too insecure and flakey (due to work) to do before in a class.

When Clooney waits to eat his dinner until he's told and doesn't jump on him anymore, Derek could cry with relief.

As Clooney improves, Derek realises that once he's up to whatever standard Hotch is working towards, their afternoons of hanging out will disappear.

Once Clooney got better, Hotch brought Jack over. Of course, he waited until Clooney had good recall and was more aware of his size and weight. And having Jack laugh while Hotch worked with he and Clooney made Derek's house feel more like home than it ever did.

How could he (and Clooney, obviously) ever re-adapt to life before then?

He gets a wild, silly thought to try and sabotage Clooney's training and reward vad behaviour. He only thinks it for a moment before feeling guilty and shoving the idea aside. He casts a baleful glance at Clooney, comfy on his bed in front of the couch.

'You wouldn't mind them continuing to hang around though, would you?'

So now he has to think up another scheme to get them to stay.

He floats the idea of a second dog, but quickly banishes that; he wouldn't be able to handle it, and his house wasn't big enough for another Clooney.

He thinks of asking Hotch about training him for something specific. Agility, scenting things out, but he doesn't like that it feels disingenuous, and he doesn't know how much Hotch could help him with it anyways.

But it works out, in the end. Because the heartwrenching day where Hotch and Jack leave and Hotch says on his way out the door 'well, I think he's all trained up now, Derek. Be proud of him, you worked hard.'

Well, he comes over the next day anyway and they play with Clooney and take him on a walk together.

Then later that week, he shows up with Jack saying he missed Clooney.

Then, Derek realises, they're hanging out without Clooney as the main focus.

And he realises, maybe, Hotch just wants to be there with him, not just to train Clooney.

Maybe, Hotch wants more, just like he does.

He can work with that.
