The floor design of Hekarro’s throne room at the Memorial Grove, seen from up on the roof.
Notice the 3 clans and himself at the top, with all the corresponding colors, as well as the different geographic zones/elevations, and the river that connects them all. Very cool.

last night’s late night Memorial Grove thoughts:
So like, are the Marshals and Guards and other Soldiers hanging around on Hekarro’s payroll or what? How does that work? Are they paid in room & board? A metal shard basic allowance? Where are there even rooms to sleep? Kotallo, where do you sleep? Parts of the roof are gone does it really just rain in there? Who painted the mural on the floor of the throne room? Who put that whole jet back up there?

It's been a week for me, so not gonna lie, posting To the Ends of the Earth was updated got buried. But has once again been uncovered! Let's have a little sneek peak this week, shall we?
----------------------------------------
Rost swallowed. Kotallo was nothing like a brother to him, but he could understand the sentiment. “Once, years ago, I was gifted a daughter that didn’t belong to me.” He breathed through the quaking in his stomach. “She was a small, squalling, red-faced little terror.” He huffed. “I had no idea what to do with her. My own daughter had been killed days after her birth. I’d held her a hundred times, stared at her for hours, but my wife had taken care of her. Wouldn’t let me do anything. Said it was a mother’s job. So, there I was with an infant cradled in a warrior’s hands, and not the first idea how to care for her.”
The story took him back to those first few days when Aloy had taught him how to be what she needed, how to give when she demanded, how to take her screams, how to stop her tears before they could begin.
“She demanded everything from me. She’ll be twenty soon, and she still demands everything from me. I don’t think she realizes it, though.” Rost let a fond smile curl his mouth. “It was a nightmare those first weeks, figuring out how to clothe her, change her, feed her, wash her–girl children are so much harder to manage than boys. When she got older she didn’t understand why she couldn’t bathe with me. Said I was her father and it was my duty to wash behind her ears.”
Fashav scoffed, and then covered his mouth to muffle his laughter. “She’s so fearsome,” he gasped out, trying to catch a breath, “it’s hard to imagine her as an intractable child.”

Kotallo Backstory Thoughts
Hello I have had Kotallo on repeat in my brain for some days now and I love him, and in my head have been fleshing out his backstory when he used to be a warrior of Sky Clan (before he became a Marshal). Speculations supported by dialogue from the game in most places.
In game Kotallo says most Tenakth do not live beyond their thirtieth year and he promises to give what is left of his life to Aloy.
I think Kotallo is 28 in the events of HFW. Although the Tenakth are starting to live longer lives since the end of the Clan Wars, this still means Kotallo is approaching an age considered to have led a full life in Tenakth eyes. Coupled with losing his fellow Marshals and his arm at the Embassy at Barren Light, Kotallo is starkly facing the question of his own mortality. He doesn’t think he has much time left to him, hence his wording to give Aloy ‘what is left of his life’ as he doesn’t expect he has many years ahead of him.
In game Kotallo says he led his squad on the climb into the Daunt to open the gates at Barren Light.
This implies he is already a seasoned Sky Clan soldier. We know that Tenakth generally lead short, bloody lives so living beyond the first few skirmishes in their late teens would qualify them to become a squad leader. My timeline pitches Kotallo at 22 at this time. In game comparison – Wekatta taking the young soldiers to the March of the Ten climb.
Also I have used the Timeline from the HZD Wiki in my calculations - the Tenakth pushed the Carja from their lands before the end of the Red Raids so this is 6 years before the events of Forbidden West.
In game Kotallo says Tekotteh would have challenged Hekarro years ago if he had the guts. He also says that he looked up to Tekkoteh as one would a father – he would have done anything for him.
This implies Kotallo has given thought to the possibility of this challenge. We don’t discover in game what lengths Kotallo would have gone to on Tekotteh’s orders but we can assume this would have included supporting a challenge to become the Chieftain of all Tenakth.
In game Kotallo says Tekotteh sent him to the Kulrut to remove him as a challenge to the leadership of Sky Clan and says that Tekotteh never saw that Kotallo had no desire to rise above his station.
This implies that something explicit happened to make Tekotteh start seeing Kotallo as a threat rather than a supporter, rather than it just being that Kotallo returned from Barren Light to a hero’s welcome.
My idea is that Kotallo was one of those who were angered by Hekarro’s orders not to pursue the Carja beyond the Daunt. When he returned from the rout at Barren Light he was still eager for battle and was agitating for Tekotteh to challenge Hekarro as Chief. Tekotteh saw this as a double threat, both Kotallo being strong enough to challenge his own position as Commander and Kotallo pushing him towards a confrontation with Hekarro that he might not win. Tekotteh doesn’t realise that Kotallo’s intent would be to support Tekotteh in a bid for the Chiefdom. Knowing he has no grounds to challenge Kotallo (and risk losing) he declares that Kotallo is to enter the Kulrut ‘so that all the Tenakth may benefit from his strength’.
Further support for my idea of a young Kotallo wanting to remove Hekarro from power:-
My timeline places Kotallo’s parents being killed as one of the last Clan Wars skirmishes before Hekarro took the Memorial Grove and saw the Vision of Unity. Kotallo was raised as an orphan by his squad from the age of 7 in my timeline. As Hekarro then moved to unite the clans, Kotallo never got the chance to avenge his parents’ deaths.
In game Kotallo tells Aloy that whilst he was hurt at being sent away from Sky Clan at first, a Marshal is what he was meant to be.
This implies he now wholeheartedly supports Hekarro’s rule and the vision of a united Tenakth people.
In my idea, after Kotallo survives the Kulrut and becomes a Marshal he is bitter and resentful about being sent away from Sky Clan by Tekotteh. He does not immediately appreciate Hekarro’s vision for the united clans, even as he works to enforce Hekarro’s will. However as he spends time with Hekarro, Kotallo begins to see by comparison how Tekotteh used him.
It takes some time for Kotallo to fully give Hekarro his trust and loyalty. With the support of the other Marshals, including Fashav, Kotallo comes to realise that Hekarro’s vision is one he can truly believe in. The last vestiges of the angry young man that Tekotteh manipulated burn away and Hekarro becomes the new supporting figure in Kotallo’s life.
Aaanyway if you’re still reading I hope you’ve enjoyed thinking about Young Kotallo’s life as much as I have. May turn thoughts into fanfiction. May not. We’ll see.
