Al Ewing: Sunspot is a very powerful, very clever tactician. He’s always five steps ahead, but you won’t know his plan until it’s too late to change it. His true strength is his ability to form bonds with others. He can lead the avengers ❤️
Jonathan Hickman: Sunspot is gay. I will not confirm it though.

I’m not too well versed in the comics history, Has there been clear progress made for mutant rights and acceptance in the marvel universe? Like , between the big events and Orchises of the marvel (and real world) setting things back, is there a big difference with how mutants are treated de facto and dejure across the decades since the 60s? Any particular mutant rights milestones?
Great question!
People's History of the Marvel Universe, Week 22: Anti-Mutant Prejudice and Mutant Rights In the Longue Durée
This is a difficult question to answer, because Chris Claremont was very much of the "torture your darlings" school of comics writing, believing that the way to wring endless drama out of your characters was to keep piling tragedy on tragedy on top of them before finally giving them a moment of catharsis. This was especially true for how he handled the mutant metaphor from as far back as X-Men #99, where even when the X-Men saved the day, it would only seem to further fan the flames of anti-mutant prejudice.
Tumblr media
That being said, Claremont didn't present an unchanging portrait of anti-mutant prejudice constantly getting worse and worse - after all, the very beating heart of dramatic structure is variation, without which even the most grimdark tragedy becomes numbing and monotonous. So there are definitely key moments in the Claremont run where the X-Men are able to score a victory for mutantkind.
Tumblr media
Perhaps the first and most famous instance of the mutants notching a win comes in the climax of God Loves, Man Kills - Claremont's first great Statement Comic about bigotry. After having foiled the Reverend Stryker's plans to exterminate mutantkind by kidnapping Charles Xavier and using a Cerebro-like device to project lethal strokes into mutant brains across the world, the X-Men confront Stryker on live T.V - again, part of Chris Claremont's endless fascination with the power of media to shape our minds that would recur in Fall of the Mutants - fighting him on the level of ideology and rhetoric. Kitty Pryde is able to bait Stryker into attempted murder in front of the television cameras, ending his crusade of hate:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I'll do a full in-depth analysis of God Loves, Man Kills and how it both codifies and reveals Chris Claremont's approach to the mutant metaphor in a future issue of PHOMU.)
The next big moment of victory I've already written about in PHOMU Week 20, was Fall of the Mutants. In this storyline, the X-Men face off against Freedom Force and the Registration Act and ultimately sacrifice their lives to save the world in Dallas - once again, using the power of rhetoric and media to strike back against discrimination and oppression.
Tumblr media
After that, Claremont's next (and arguably last) big victory for mutant rights came in the "Genoshan Saga." (I'll also be doing an in-depth analysis of Genosha in a future issue of PHOMU.) Beginning in UXM #235 and winding its way through Inferno and the X-Tinction Agenda, the fictional nation of Genosha was Chris Claremont's big Statement about apartheid South Africa. An island nation off the east coast of Africa, Genosha seems to be a utopia free of poverty, crime, and disease - but its entire society rests on a foundation of mutant slavery, where mutants are press-ganged, mind-controlled, and genetically-manipulated to serve the human ruling class.
After a series of clashes between the X-Men and the Genoshan Magistrates, the X-Men defeat Genosha's anti-mutant military and their cyborg ally Cameron Hodge. But whereas most superhero comics end with the heroes foiling the evil plan of the supervillain and restoring the status quo, this time Chris Claremont and Louise Simonson went a step beyond the norm and had the X-Men carry out a political revolution that brings lasting structural change - toppling the Genoshan government and abolishing apartheid.
Tumblr media
Under the pen of later writers like Joe Pruett, Fabien Nicieza, and (most enduringly) Grant Morrison, the island of Genosha would be refashioned as a mutant homeland, a prosperous and advanced nation of sixteen million mutants ruled by Magneto. (Yet again, a topic for another issue of PHOMU.) Arguably ever since then, the story of the X-Men has been the story of the struggle to restore mutantkind to the position it was in before Cassandra Nova ended the first mutant nation-state, culminating in HOXPOX and the foundation of Krakoa. (A topic we'll be covering next year when FOTHOX/ROTPOX writes the final chapter in the Krakoan Era.)

Ultimate Universe #1 (2023) and some Ultimate Invasion Thoughts (Spoilers!)
So, I just read the new Ultimate Universe One Shot by Jonathan Hickman. If you have not read it and you’re interested in reading it, then maybe don’t read this. I’m also going to talk about Ultimate Invasion for a bit so if you haven’t read that then definitely don’t read this. I also will only show images from Ultimate Invasion since this title just came out today and I feel like you should be able to buy it without the insides of it getting spoiled to you too much. I recommend reading both Ultimate Invasion and Ultimate Universe by the way.
I really like this Ultimate Universe One Shot. I like the idea that Tony Stark and Reed Richards are trying to use this time where the Maker is trapped (maybe dead) in his city of tomorrow to undo the damage he has done to this universe. For reference this is what he has done to Universe 6160 (The New Ultimate Universe) from issue #2 of Secret Invasion:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He basically recreated this Universe so that he can be the ruler of it, and he methodically erased, destroyed, and imprisoned the heroes of this universe. Leaving only the people he deemed to be useful to him and his idea of this new world. I thought this was a pretty interesting idea to have the Maker pretty much invade and infiltrate this universe to create a new Ultimate Universe; but also, I felt that as a reboot of the Ultimate Universe that this premise felt pretty messy.
With that being said, I do like the idea that this version of Tony and Reed are trying to fix these changes that the Maker has made to this world. In this issue, we see them taking a container with little trinkets of what the Maker has changed in this world. One of them being a cryogenically frozen spider. I’m assuming it’s the same one that was supposed to bite Peter Parker in the first issue of Secret Invasion. I’ll talk about Spider-Man more later, but I will say this: if Tony and Reed are undoing the Maker’s actions wouldn’t it be better for them to go back in time and undo those changes during the time, they happened rather than them getting these trinkets and these people and undoing the actions of the Maker in their present time?
In Ultimate Invasion #4 Tony and Reed actually go back in time to retrieve Captain America’s body from the glacier he’s trapped in, and they put him in their present time and they’re trying to unfreeze him now. Meaning that they’re the reason why the Maker couldn’t find Steve’s body in Ultimate Invasion #2 (see the last pages up top). Now my question is this: Is the reason why they can’t change what happened during the time they were changed because they might see the Maker? Like they can’t change the Maker’s universe alterations because it’ll screw up their timeline and the maker would know that they’re up to something? That’s why they can retrieve Steve because he was already supposed to be gone and taken by them. I kind of hate time travel stories because they tend to be really messy and hard to keep up with, so I really hope we get a better explanation of these events. If somebody wants to tell me what they think that’ll be great. Here’s the pages where they found Steve Rogers in Ultimate Invasion #4:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, I really like this new version of Ultimate Thor who seems to have been imprisoned and tortured by this universe’s Loki, who is now the King of Asgard because of the Maker’s alterations. There also seems to be something more going on with Lady Sif and Thor. I think they were married or have a more personal relationship rather than just being a prisoner and a guard. I’m looking forward to seeing more of them. I also want to know what Asgardians are capable of in this new universe.
Also, I’m still really invested in what will happen to Tony Stark in this Universe. The way it’s being presented, it seems that he will turn into this universe’s Kang because he literally calls himself Iron Lad instead of Iron Man. Although, if I remember correctly, the mythos of Iron Lad in the Main 616 universe involves him being an unsure way towards Kang, so maybe Jonathan Hickman is trying to say that this Tony Stark can become Kang but also, he may not turn into Kang. If he plays his cards correctly then maybe he can fully restore this universe to what it actually was supposed to be rather than what the Maker has made it to be. Although, all signs point to him being Kang because when Howard Stark took off Kang’s mask in Ultimate Invasion #4, he looks shocked and disappointed. I really hope there is an answer to all these events and whether or not this universe can be restored and revived from the Maker’s alterations. Here's some panels from Ultimate Invasion #4 hinting that Tony Stark may become Kang:
Howard Unmasking Kang:

Tony Stark Calling Himself Iron Lad:

In regard to Peter Parker, the Ultimate Spider-Man of this Universe:
We get some hints to him in this book, we actually see Aunt May and Norman Osborn’s names in the list of the potential casualties of the blast that happens in this book. I hope they’re not dead to be honest. I’m kind of hoping that Tony did something to save everyone from that blast because if you look at that panel in the comic his Arc Reactor/ Immortus Engine glows when they figure out that they were going to get hit by the beam. If they are dead, then I’m really interested in how that affects Peter in this universe. Also, it seems that this comic confirms that he is going to get bitten by the spider as an adult rather than them coming back in time and having him get bitten as a teen, which I don’t know what I feel about it yet. I honestly would have liked to have seen Peter get bitten as a teen in this universe so that in the new Ultimate Spider-Man book he’ll be a more experienced Spider-Man rather than an adult Peter Parker trying to figure out his powers, which is where I think this is leading to. Although, if he does get bitten as an adult with a wife and kids, that would be pretty interesting to see as well. How would he juggle being a superhero and his personal life if he has more responsibilities in his personal life now more than ever? It doesn’t sound bad, but I just prefer him having his powers at a young age and then growing up becoming a better and more responsible Spider-Man.
I really don’t know where Jonathan Hickman is going with all of this right now. I’m interested in what he’s shown me so far. Although, I also have a lot of stuff that I don’t like. For example, the time travel shenanigans of this universe feels a little too messy. I want to see what his resolution is for all of this. I’m really excited to see what becomes of this universe. I want to know more about Ultimate Thor and Ultimate Lady Sif. I want to see how and if Tony becomes Kang. I want to see what’s going to happen to the Reed Richard/Doom of this universe. I also want to know what happened to the Maker and Howard Stark. It seems unsure at the moment if they’re dead or alive or just simply trapped there. Also, I really want to know what the Ultimate Illuminati does in this universe. it seems like they're going to fight one another now that the maker is gone. I also want to know who the silhouette we saw at the end of the book was, the one that’s shrouded in green smoke. My thought was that it was Norman Osborn as the Green Goblin because of the green smoke, but it could also be Black Panther because the silhouette looks like the new version of Ultimate Black Panther’s costume. It’s probably going to be Black Panther more than it is Norman. Also, I like the little preview we got of Ultimate X-Men so I might pick that up. It has a unique look and I have no clue how different it’s going to be to the X-Men we’ve been used to.
Thanks for reading this. Tell me if I got anything wrong or if you have any thoughts about this new Ultimate Universe. Also, what do you guys think of the time travel and the alterations that the Maker made in this universe? Do you guys think we’ll ever get the original Ultimate Universe back?

thinking about krakoa again now that we know krakoa is going away forever and how one of the things i wanted from it was this post superhero superhero “the idea no longer holds meaning to me” thing but instead it was this incoherent line where it was never allowed to go too far past the typical marvel fare. individually there were books and moments that felt like they were a part of the promise of hoxpox but then there was always like. duggan’s xmen to reel everyone back to safety.

im so curious what the damn pepperoni panel is
Okay so long ago (January 2013, 10 years go, dang) Brian Michael Bendis (he who fucked up modern Superman) was ruining X-men, and one of those things he did was "time displace" the original 5 X-men (Scott, Hank, Bobby, Warren, Jean) into the present, in his "All-New X-men" series.
In the 13th issue, this panel was published, which gets shared around a bunch as a meme.
Tumblr media
The "time displaced"/younger/naive Bobby Drake/Iceman making this comment, with the younger Hank Mcoy asking Professor Kitty Pyrde (Shadowcat) her option, which leads to the Professor giving this speech:
Tumblr media
About how words do matter, and Kitty's own experiences with antisemitism.
I feel the context is important.
....
This is one of the better written scenes in the run (Bendis's failures on X-men compounded as things dragged on).

In hindsight letting Grant Morrison write X-Men was a mistake because genociding Genosha was a shocking and novel development but now Marvel just keeps recycling that same plot over and over again
As a general rule letting Morrison write anything usually ends up badly god bless but yes Genosha/Utopia/Krakoa it's like same shit different day it's boring it's been done before! Krakoa could have really been something different if Hickman had been able to do what he set out to but we'll never know now 🤷‍♂️

At first, I thought the mission at the outset of the Krakoa saga to take out the base by the sun was plot-driven, to create heroic deaths for a bunch of favs and then show off the resurrection system. Now I'm certain. A couple of OMEGA LEVEL mutants who can control magnetic fields & atmosphere would be a LOT more useful inside Mercury than wings or a guy who makes holes in train stations (which is why he didn't go on Asteroid M raid), but the Doylist point of the mission really was their death.
You're certainly right from a Doylist perspective, and it might even be true from a Watsonian perspective - is Xavier enough of a bastard to send his X-Men to die just to give a Big Reveal for the Five at the founding of Krakoa?
Tumblr media
I think not.
As we see in Hickman's X-Men, and Inferno, the Orchis Forge is Krakoa's own bridge too far. They destroy the Mother Mold, but Nimrod comes online anyway, thanks to the time travel/multiverse meddling of Omega Sentinel. After the mission in HOXPOX, Krakoa sends its biggest guns again and again - they send X-Force, they send Mystique, they send Magneto, they send assassins, they send the Brood, and no matter what they try they fail.
Tumblr media
Rather, I think the point has to do with Hickman's existential themes about defying inevitability, fate versus free will, and the necessity of resistance.
While I'm throwing down bets, I will put $20 that, in FOTHOXROTPOX, Krakoa will rally to defeat ORCHIS once and for all - only to find that ORCHIS and their secret machine masters were merely pawns meant to distract and delay Krakoa, in order to buy time for the real existential threat: the Dominion.

Witness Magneto, the Hero of Mutantkind!
We loved him in our latest episode as we discussed X-Men #11. Much of that is due to the gorgeous art by @leinilyu with colors done by @sunnygho
