The creators of She-Hulk legitimately don't know what they're doing
Tumblr media
I think a lot of people have heard the director state
"There's a lot of talk about her body type and we based it on Olympian athletes and not bodybuilders."
Does anyone want to know a specific "Olympian" they based She-Hulk's body off of?
"Olympian Misty Copeland was a body that we referenced, you know, of someone who was very, very, very strong, but also could walk through the world and operate in the normal world at a scale that is very large, but it's still very human because she has to go on dates she has to work in a regular office."
Tumblr media
Misty Copeland. Misty. Freaking. Copeland. She is a goddess and an icon. Here are some of her greatest accomplishments.
"2008 Leonore Annenberg Fellowship in the Arts and was named National Youth of the Year Ambassador for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 2013. In 2014, President Obama appointed Copeland to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. She is the recipient of a 2014 Dance Magazine Award and was named to the 2015 TIME 100 by TIME Magazine." - American Ballet Theatre
Misty Copeland is an amazingly talented person, who has dealt with immense struggles due to her body type, but she is not an Olympian. She's a ballerina. Ballet, by definition from Oxford Languages,
"...is characterized by light, graceful, fluid movements."
I'm especially pissed because when growing up, I was a ballerina. And my sister was a Track & Field thrower. When I heard of She-Hulk as a kid, I always imagined her looking like my sister. Looking like her build - not the ones of prima ballerinas.
Tumblr media
While writing this, I've been sitting here thinking about how many great ACTUAL Olympians they could have used as inspiration for She-Hulk's build.
Tumblr media
Raven Saunders aka The Hulk. 2020 Tokyo Olympics Silver Medalist in Shotput.
Tumblr media
Hidilyn Diaz. 2020 Tokyo Olympics Gold Medalist and Record Holder in 55 KG Weightlifting.
Tumblr media
Tamyra Mensah-Stock. 2020 Tokyo Olympics Gold Medal in Freestyle Wrestling.
There are so many incredible female Olympians they could have used as inspiration. There are so many strength-based sports. The Summer Olympics alone have 33 sports.
But they specifically wanted She-Hulk's build to be inspired by
"not bodybuilders."
Even if this meant putting more work on the VFX Artists of the show who made her larger to begin with. Sean Ruecroft, a VFX Artist who worked on Infinity War and Moon Knight, took to Twitter to let people know the struggles Marvel put their team through.
"I was at a company that did VFX for this. Apparently, she was bigger early on, but the notes kept saying to ‘make her smaller.'"
They put more work on the artists, pushing them into the same inspiration that was used for Natasha Romanoff.
Tumblr media
"...light, graceful, fluid movements."
Tumblr media
The creators didn't want a Hulk. They wanted grace, sex appeal, and a tiny waist on an hourglass figure.

i have never been proud to be a Filipino.
There are flashes of pride, sure, when Hidilyn Diaz won the Olympic gold for one. When I listen to our indigenous groups’ songs, when I dive into the waters of Coron, Palawan.
When I read about the historic EDSA I movement that ousted Marcos from power after decades of killing the country. But now? I have never felt so ashamed, so angry. It’s a suffering, being a Filipino under the son of the dictator we ousted not half a century ago. It’s a suffering - watching an actor take top spot in the senatorial race and a lawyer not even getting into the Magic 12.  I’m exhausted. Ashamed. And done.  I’ll be fine - relatively. Middle class girl, with more or less the capacity to migrate. But shit, man, that’s another thing -- who tf wants to be a second-class citizen in white countries?  I don’t know. i don’t know.

Women fighters, in fiction and in reality, have always fascinated me.
I grew up never getting tired of The Mummy Returns (2001) and its action-packed adventures. It features one of my most favorite cinematic moments: the fight scene between Nefertiri and Anck-su-namun, both tasked to be protectors in the kingdom of Egypt some 3,000 years ago. One may think they must be ahead of their time for training women for battle and assigning such tasks to them.
Tumblr media
Fight scene from The Mummy Returns (2001)
There are many other scenes in the said film showing both women as their 1930s reincarnation, Evy (Nefertiri) and Meela (Anck-su-namun), fighting with and among men. Not once did Rick, Evy's husband, handed over guns to her to help them battle the enemies and save their son. Their kind of relationship was yet another reason why I have always loved that film.
Seeing The Mummy Returns again for the nth time, I figured these female characters have played a significant part in my upbringing. They showed me women can fight, too, when it was most needed. They didn't have to be the stereotypical damsels in distress waiting to be rescued because they can save themselves while saving others, as well. In retrospect, at such a young age I knew I wanted to be like them. I wasn't very much into the princess thingy, except for the Xena the Warrior Princess kind. In fact, I once dreamed of becoming like the Power Rangers with all their skills and stunts.
Through the years, I have been learning more about Filipinas who left their mark in our history. In an era of a patriarchal society where women were reinforced to be homemakers & deemed as the lesser sex, there were several of them who strayed against the conventions and took part in the never-ending fight for freedom.
Tumblr media
Illustrations of Gabriela Silang (by Carlito Rovira) (top) and the first female general Agueda Kahabagan (from SCOUT Magazine) (bottom) during the Philippine Revolution
One of them was notorious for polishing her nails and putting on red lipstick before going to battle, because she believed she also fought for the freedom to be herself as a woman. Another one used to be a movie superstar until the war. She joined the guerrilla movement to avenge for her husband's murder, and in the process she saved an entire village from being killed by the colonizers.

But the courage of Filipina women in history has been witnessed not only at home and in the battlefield. There were women who stood up for their right to receive formal education and their right to vote.

Tumblr media

There were women who prove themselves worthy to be recognized by the world for their talents, abilities, and dedication in their respective fields.

And before I forget, I was raised and surrounded by strong women who all the while face their own share of battles in life.
We as women are fighters, and we should never let anyone tell us otherwise.
Meanwhile, I believe I have arrived at a full circle. I may haven't reached my dream of becoming a Power Ranger but who would have thought that as an adult, I would portray a woman fighter myself?
Happy Women's Month!

"Rising Above: Hidilyn Diaz's Journey to Olympic Greatness."
In the realm of sports, there are athletes who exceed boundaries and inspire nations. Hidilyn Diaz, a Filipino weightlifter, is one such individual. In this literary Journalism we will explore the remarkable journey of Hidilyn Diaz, her groundbreaking achievements, and the impact she has had on the Philippines and the world. Hidilyn Diaz, a name that has brought pride and honor to the Philippines, has become an inspiration to many. Born and raised in Zamboanga City, Diaz never thought that she would become an Olympic medalist. However, her passion for weightlifting and determination to succeed pushed her to become one of the most celebrated athletes in the country. We will uncover the trials and problems she faced, the sacrifices she made, and the strong determination that pushed her to greatness.
Diaz started her weightlifting journey at the age of 11, following in the footsteps of her older cousin. Despite her initial reluctance, she soon discovered her love for the sport and began training with her coach, Tony Agustin. Diaz's hard work and dedication to her craft paid off when she won her first medal at the Southeast Asian Games in 2007. Over the years, Diaz's career has been marked by both success and setbacks. In 2012, she narrowly missed out  a medal at the London Olympics, finishing fourth in the women's 58-kilogram weightlifting event. However, Diaz refused to be discouraged by this setback and continued to train tirelessly for the next four years in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
At the Rio Olympics, Diaz made history by becoming the first Filipino woman to win an Olympic medal. She won the silver medal in the women's 53-kilogram weightlifting event, breaking the country's 20-year medal drought in the process. Diaz's victory was a testament to her  determination and resilience in the face of adversity. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Diaz once again proved her bravery by winning the gold medal in the women's 55-kilogram weightlifting event, setting a new Olympic record with her total lift of 224 kilograms. Her victory not only made her the first Filipino athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympics but also firmly settled her status as a national hero and role model. Hidilyn's success increases above the weight of expectations, lifting the spirits of an entire nation like a phoenix rising from the ashes. She and her victory is the hope, resilience, and national pride of Filipino's.
Diaz's success has not only brought recognition to her as an athlete but also highlighted the potential of Filipino athletes on the global stage. Through her achievements, Diaz has become a symbol of perseverance for the Filipino people, inspiring many to pursue their dreams and strive for excellence. Journey After Gold
by Patricia Nicole Zafe, OD Editor-in-Chief

Tumblr media
At last! After long excruciating years, four Filipino athletes finally rose above and satiated our country’s hunger for victory in the Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020, held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. Hidilyn Diaz, Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial brought immense pride to the Philippines as they took home a haul of four medals – the most that the country had since 1932, thus lighting the fire in the hearts of the nation’s people. However, this fulfilling spectacle should not only serve as the fulfillment of a dream we have longed for, this should also serve as a starter motivation to Filipino athletes more so to sports-related government agencies to continue bringing our athletes' dream to life.
Filipinos firmly supported and loved all of 19 athletes, who proudly represented and fought for Pinoy Pride despite the seemingly unfaltering threat of the coronavirus. This is very evident with Philippines being one of the most active countries on social media in support for Filipino athletes in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Bagging the Philippines’ first-ever Olympic gold medal, Diaz, the weightlifter from Zamboanga City, became an inspiration to a lot of aspiring weightlifters and women alike for her triumph in spite of hardships and sacrifices in her well-known Olympic journey. Petecio, Paalam, and Marcial – the boxing trio brought similar glory to the Filipinos as they successfully couped two silver medals and one bronze medal, respectively. Their triumph will be a welcome addition to history books and will be etched on Filipino memory forever.
The medalists were rewarded millions worth of incentives from both the government and the private sector. Aside from the sportsmen who stood on the podium, the non-medalists were also granted Php 500,000 each for representing our flag in the global sporting arena. Each peso that these athletes received hopefully compensates for every hard work that competing for the honor of our country had cost them.
Still, there is always so much more than what meets the eye. The medals that the athletes earned are neither just mere tokens of excellence, nor symbols of strength and superiority. These medals are reminders of a fruitful battle fought not only for oneself but for a whole nation. These serve as reminders of great feats – milestones reached through dedication and perseverance. These serve as a start of another journey, only to be victorious again if more support comes in which may be through enhanced and strengthened sports programs.
After all, the only way to move forward is to improve what was. Imagine an empowered, stronger, and determined Filipino fleet in Paris 2024 - another journey for glory!

Reflection: A Pearl of Great Price
Two years ago, in July 2021, one great news during the unsavory times of the pandemic and of oppressive governance was the Olympic gold medal-winning lift of Hidilyn Diaz. She was the first Filipino athlete to win a gold medal since the country joined the Olympics in 1924. In America Magazine – The Jesuit Review, we read: “After winning the Philippines’ first Olympic gold, Hidilyn Diaz thanked God and raised up her Miraculous Medal.” In a statement, Archbishop Romulo Valles of Davao congratulated Diaz on behalf of the Philippine bishops. He wrote: “Her victory was captured through many lenses, and in one of those photos was her holding the gold medal and wearing a Miraculous Medal of Our Lady on her chest. We admire her devotion to the Blessed Mother as she carried in her victory her great faith in God. Hidilyn is a true weightlifter who draws her strength from her love for the country and a deep Catholic faith.”
As I looked at various pictures and video clips on the Internet, I came upon an interview of Hidilyn in 2008 when she was still seventeen. Chino Trinidad did a short documentary of the young Olympian. Her words gave me goosebumps. She was a young woman of faith who put God as her inspiration. She said in English mixed with the vernacular: “Someday, I will bear the flag of the Philippines as a weightlifter gold medalist in the Olympics.” Her words came true.
In 2008, she placed second to last in a field of twelve; in 2012, she did not finish the event; in 2016, she won silver. Then in 2020, she struck gold. Like the merchant in the parable, she went and gave all she had. This was the pearl of great price.
Seek your buried treasures and pearls of great price!
Fr. Joel Camaya, SDB
What is your buried treasure? What is the thing that you desire most in life? What pearl of great price have you achieved in life? What have you given up in order to acquire it?
Lord, may I truly seek the things that matter. Amen.
Prayer
… for a deep and profound respect for life, especially for the unborn.
… for the strength and healing of the sick.
… for the healing and peace of all families.
Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.
GOD BLESS!

I've seen and heard a lot about Bigboy Cheng and his shoe collections on television and in social media, but I was still in awe when Paolo Tomenes and Carlo Ople visited their home over four (4) years ago. Paolo got to know Boss Milton Sy of Anti Shoe Expert and showed him Bigboy Cheng's extensive collections of shoes, toys, and limited-edition items. I frequently saw Bigboy Cheng in Julius Babao's Instagram and YouTube vlogs. The more Bigboy Cheng backed Filipino artists, products, and culture, the more I admired him. He improves the life and mindset of countless Filipinos. In the same way that our champions Paeng Nepomuceno, Lydia de Vega, Manny Pacquiao, Pauline Louise Lopez, Agatha Wong, Nikko Huelgas, Hidilyn Diaz, and EJ Obiena brings honor to our country. I can honestly say that Bigboy Cheng did the same for the country's arts and design, culture, shoes and toy collections. I consider it an honor to have met him and taken a photo with him in person. We appreciate you visiting The Final Word with our prominent Rico Hizon on CNN Philippines.
