In addition to Inertial Confinement Fusion and Magnetic Confinement Fusion, it's important to remember that there's also Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Fusion, which cannot break even and is primarily useful for building a neutron source in your garage but, for at least four separate and unrelated reasons, is probably the most hilariously dangerous home electronics project you can attempt without attracting the attention of federal law enforcement agencies.

lmao every time Miles talks about RWBY it's the most validating experience ever for me because it's always "wow, this is literally what I spent years saying."

I wish I could tell my 9-year old self that no, growing up and getting excited about "boring" things like kitchen appliances isn't sad, because contrary to what people would have you think it DOESN'T tend to totally change who you are as a person and replace everything else you love - they add to what makes you happy, they don't replace a damned thing, and the excitement is VERY genuine
But since I can't do that I'll just put it out here for any younger people who need it
You grow to love "boring" things because they improve your life, not because it's the only thing you're "allowed" to get excited about once you reach a certain age
Also! That stage in life has nothing to do with numerical age; you can fall in love with something "boring" at any time and it feels exactly the same! Loving the new kitchen appliance as an adult is no different from loving the Easy-Bake oven or the first thing you learned to make your own recipes with as a kid! It's not "turning into your parents" (scary), it's bringing out new joy in YOU! It's fucking awesome!

I had bought new plants for my aquarium some weeks ago and they are just you know typical assortments of easy growing things but like what’s always crazy to me is that the leaves maybe had one or two fragments of duckweed on them from when the guy selling them pulled them out of their original tank and like so I didn’t buy duckweed but got those two pieces just because they clung to the plants I wanted and well now the entire top of my tank is covered with duckweed it’s crazy how fast that shit grows and thrives. My loaches are obsessed with swimming up and plucking stray pieces of food off the roots too

pros of starting to do hands-on stuff again after months of desk work: hardware waits for no one -> many short-term deadlines and clear goals / requirements
cons of starting to do hands-on stuff again after months of desk work: hardware waits for no one -> weekend work T__T

I don’t know why I’m shocked with the United States’ support for genocide given their track record with it. I don’t know, I just hoped that maybe for once they would actually make an effort to prevent one and speak out against it but it looks like we’re going down the same path we always do which is: make it worse, assist in the deaths of innocent civilians and then when the dust settles claim that another genocide can never happen again and next time we won’t be silent and we will do something about it.

also I know that like things are all temporary and stuff isn’t what’s important in life but listen. I’m in a committed long-term relationship with my bissel pet hair eraser with lift off technology. when no one else gets me she gets me.

Fun fact! You actually couldn't stay conscious in space for anything close to a minute. After about 10 or 15 seconds you would pass out due to your brain expanding and hitting your skull!

don't think i can fully articulate how bad i hate the freeing 1/4 scale reimu. like literally who is this. not reimu i can tell you that much
Tumblr media
and something i really love about touhou's character design is the fact it's really easy to make major or minor tweaks to the character in several different ways and still have them not even look out of place. like reimu has a different haircut in almost every game and different artists take a lot of liberties in details of her design but they're all so easily believably reimu.

so. idk. making this figure that contains all the same key elements that make a character recognizable and still somehow making it not look like the character is almost impressive. great(bad) job freeing you made the least reimu-y reimu

Baby its cold inside!?
Cryogenic treatments. In my research into glass things I have seen several references to Cryogenic treatment of vacuum tubes. "Upscale Audio" touts that a lot. Another extra cost service. People will proudly review their new purchase and credit that three digit negative temperature exposure made all the difference.
OK is this snake oil or real? It seems a stretch. In metal processing cryogenic treatment is used to harden steel for example. It improves wear resistance in gears. It does affect crystal structures. BUT...
Another thing that effects metal crystal structure is heat. If you want to bend or shape steel it helps to anneal or soften it. That is using various levels of heat to loosen the metal up so it can be shaped. Once done further heat and quenching will harden it. And you know vacuum tubes get hot. Sometimes they get really hot. Incandescent glow hot. It seems to me that once you get a tube hot whatever possible effects extreme cold may have had get overwhelmed. Plates and thin sheets get annealed and softened. On off heat and cooling cycles cause thermal stress. Arguably that is one of the big factors in wear and tear on vacuum tubes.
Here is another opinion.
Note that the author worries about tubes being damaged by thermal differential shrinkage at the metal to glass joint. Vacuum tube with poor seals don't hold a vacuum.
At this point only a few vendors actually do the freezing thing. I guess having a cooler full of liquid nitrogen is inconvenient. It may also be dangerous as it can displace breathable air in a closed space.
The most likely source I would use when the time comes does not offer the service. So I don't have to worry. Maybe I should spend the savings on crystal pendants with moon energy.
