La Squadra Backstories!!!! Stream of consciousnesss style!

So literally I just sat down and wrote down exactly what I thought. I have not edited these at all lmaooo. But I made long drawn out backstories for our underrated assassins so enjoy!!

T/W + C/W - idk I talk about people dying in a lot of ways. Child abuse, drugs, severe illness, dead cats. This stuff is a mess I really didn’t censor it. But nothing is described in detail cuz I’m too lazy for that.

Prosciutto cuz he’s at the top of my mind. Mmkay he and Pesci are brothers but not by blood. Pro was an orphan, I still wanna make him Russian, and pesci’s extremely kind and gentle family adopted him when he was like 7. They were like literally a garden catalogue family. Perfection. The parents died when pro was like 15, Pesci was 13?? Idk the age difference I’m just making shit up now. And Pesci had no fucking idea what to do, they didn’t have any other family, and pro was like “I’m still basically a hardened criminal from living on the streets of russia most of my childhood, so joining the local mafia should be a piece of cake”. It was.

Risotto..... fuck it. Polpo is risottos dad. I’ve seen that so much and fuck it I’m here for it now. Idk how I feel about the whole Mariah from part 3 being his mom that seems too coincidental. But either way, he is half Spanish. I don’t think he’s ever been in touch with his Spanish roots at all, but that’s what he is. Polpo had too much fun on vacay in Spain. But it was a once night stand and polpo, a skinny king back in the mid 70s, fucked off to do mafia stuff and didn’t know about this kid. Risotto never knew his father. Time goes by, about the time he’s 10, rizzo’s mom moves to Italy to find the man she once loved. Since the 70s, she has been married and divorced 4 times, disowned by her entire family, and she speaks only of Polpo, the man who swept her off her feet and then disappeared into the night. Leaving only this child with his matching eyes. So they live in Italy, risotto is about 13 now and his mom has been searching seriously for polpo for about 3 years. One day, she gets too close, mafia takes her out. Risotto is all alone in a country he has lived in for less than 3 years. So he decides to take revenge against the mafia. He goes to hunt them down. (I’m too lazy to write out how. Gets a gun. Basically the scene in part 5 where the kid is like “you killed my father and now I’m gonna kill you!!” But he chickens out???) yeah except rizzo didn’t chicken out, he stood firm and killed 2 of them. The other 2 surrendered, and immediately asked rizzo to take polpos test. He did. And he unknowingly met his father, the man his mother had died looking for. He stared into his fathers eyes, black sclera reflecting each other, and passed his test with ease.

Wowwwwwwwww alrighty then that was something. Let’s shake out those jitters because fuck that was intense and let’s move onto some happy shit.

Melone!! Always a bottle of joy. He was a phenomenal student, a perfect child. Perfect grades, perfect attitude, perfect looks. Onlyyyy tiny thing is he murdered cats and buried their heads in the back yard. But that was his only flaw. Aaaaaaaand mayyybe trying to use his extensive knowledge of molecular biology and genetics (even at as young as 11) to asexually breed said cats.

But, apart from that, absolutely perfect specimen of a young boy. And he kept that up until college. Until the rape accusation. Melone had no interest in having sex with her, he swore under oath in open court, he only wanted to “extract her essence” in the hopes of making her amazing genetics stay pure for centuries.

Due to his previously amazing school record, he was allowed to plead not guilty by reason of insanity (because the justice system is bullshit) and was released to his parents. During this whole process, Melone’s mother had begun to grow suspicious of her son, wondering if there was something wrong with him. This led her to explore the crawl space under the garage, more commonly known as “Melone’s childhood laboratory”. The cat skulls alone were enough to set her off. They allowed him into their home long enough to fool the court, but parole officers don’t pay attention, and they kicked him to the curb a month later. Broke, alone, and with no real skills other than his genius mind and gorgeous body, he became a prostitute. It was only a few months before he wandered up to a gigantic white haired man with angry eyes and asked if he wanted a date. Instead of declining, our good ol rizzo just knocked him out cold and brought him home. The rest is history. Literally because I can’t think of what would happen between that and Melone joining the mafia. I assume he was just their house pet for a little while before he decided he wanted a stand too.

Oh good lord these are getting insane. Better keep going. Okay I have no idea what’s about to come out of my head for ghia but oh Lordy. Might as well start. Ghiaccio wasn’t always quite as angry, but it’s actually gonna be a sweet story. Kinda. He used to act perfect, even tho he always felt the anger inside. He was forced to bottle it up and put on a happy exterior always. His mother was Belgian. (From experience, Belgian mothers (Flemish in particular) will beat you until your ass is raw if you talk back). Italian father, they lived in italy. He had 4 sisters, he was the middle child of 5. Around high school, he started acting out. Of course this was due to all of his bottled up anger from the past 15 years. 4 shattered sinks, 16 holes in the drywall, and one classroom fire later, Ghiaccio was expelled from school. His parents were too busy brimming with joy about the success of all his sisters that they didn’t take much notice to him. “If you’re going to behave in such a manner you might as well leave” his mother said. She was past the point of caring enough to beat him. So he left. 16 and with no where to go, he wandered the streets. After a year or so, Ghia had gotten used to that life, and was angry at everyone, sometimes when he wasn’t even angry. Anger had become his coping mechanism. Screaming was easier than talking. Until one day, he screamed at a blonde man in an intersection. Prosciutto was driving back to the squads hang out, boxes of takeout in the back seat of the car. He had chosen to not stop at the red light, just for fun, and nearly ran into our blue haired teenager. Ghia proceeded to cuss him out for a good 4 minutes in the middle of this intersection before pro cut him off. “Get in the back. “ he said, with his own special brand of brotherly love. “I know how you can put that anger to good use”. Ghiaccio, having no real reason to object, got in the back seat. Prosciutto was silent the rest of the drive and Ghiaccio yelled about all the take out food, now splattered on the backs of the seats due to the sudden slam on the brakes.

Y’all I don’t even remember the other la squadra members. Let’s do sorbet/gelato because they have zero backstory or personality so I can just ramble. *Clears throat* let’s begin. These fuckers. Friends since birth. Grew up together, always really close. They were both dirt poor, but because the only school nearby was a decent public school, when were able to slightly experience middle class living. They liked it. They wanted to see upper class, and once they did, they wanted to be there. These two were money grubbing bffs, I’m talking josuke and okuyasu, but like waaaaay more intense and also violent. They both left home around 14, together of course. Gelatos father had left them a few years prior, and his family were on the brink of starvation. Figuring they didn’t need another mouth to feed (and completely abandoning his post as family patriarch lol) he left with sorbet, who’s family had all died in various ways over the years. Most recently, his older sister being taken by some illness that was probably easily treatable, but with no means for a doctor, she died in days. The boys left home and school, and made a living by pickpocketing tourists and occasionally launching into larger heists. They made a decent living for themselves, but eventually started spending their money on drugs. It’s was sorbet first, heroin was really good to him for awhile. Gelato was against it, knowing it was the reason sorbets family had been so poor to begin with. His father was an addict, and despite holding down a job fairly well, spent all his earnings on drugs. Eventually he became too dependent, lost his job, and OD’d. But around this same time, when the boys were 16/17, they were starting to realize their feelings for each other. Confused teenaged minds full of budding love led to Gelato giving in, and soon their days were filled with heroin fueled ecstatic sex. They lived like this for awhile, existing in half reality, until one day they chose to set their pickpocketing targets on a short man with close cropped gray hair. The plan was perfect, sorbet bumped into the man and gelato passed by to grab his wallet, and suddenly they were the size of mere ants. In an instant, they were returned to size, left to wonder if it was real or just a hallucination from long term drug use. But they didn’t run. Formaggio introduced himself, with a loose handshake and a pause to spit out some tobacco, and promptly invited them to a “party”. Although, Formaggio was honest in his promise, this party did have drugs.

Cheese boys turn!! Seriously who am I forgetting??? Illuso my mirror man! Am I forgetting someone else too?? Idk. But shut up Kel it’s cheese boys turn.

So. Formaggio. Probably the most chill childhood. Lower middle class, pretty average, but he was quite gifted with sports. Soccer was his main, and also a fantastic competitive swimmer. (Okay I have a separate hc that Bruno is really good at soccer so hol horse up a moment so I can imagine those 2 playing soccer together in friendly competition. In my lil au where Bruno is in la squadra because I say BruPro exes rights please and thanks.) but anyway, he got really good at soccer and was offered a scholarship to play at a fancy pants private high school when he was 14. Of course his parents made him go, this has been the family’s dream for years, and formaggio’s as well. So high school is amazing, he’s starting to attract attention from universities even tho he’s barely in grade 11 by this point. And it’s all really amazing until he realizes. This isn’t what he wants. And it’s just that. He doesn’t want to play soccer anymore, he doesn’t want to potentially be famous. He just wants to be a kid. So he leaves school, he leaves home, he wants to start over. And he wanders into a diner and sees this small group of weirdly dressed men. At this point, it’s rizzo, pro, Pesci, and ghia. And he’s staring at them because they’re dressed like circus clowns but their aura is so murderous. And then the one who looks like a giant pineapple starts staring back. Pesci gets up and walks over to Formaggio. “I know you! You’re that amazing kid soccer player!!” And he just goes on and on about shit he read in the news (70% of it was false) until pro comes over and yanks his idiot brother away. Pro starts asking Formaggio questions, thinking he could be a good target. Stupid little rich kid. But to prosciuttos surpise, Formaggio is just a down to earth kid with no more money to his name than he needs to pay for this meal. Prosciutto takes him home after that. He doesn’t really offer any explanation.

(The rambling at the beginning of this paragraph actually happened lol so I paused for like 4 hrs oops)

Alright we are back. Had to leave to go to therapy and then scream at my mother and cry to my boyfriend but we are ready to go! Illuso and I really hope he’s the last one and I’m not forgetting one. Illuso was raised in an orphanage from infancy. No idea who his parents could even be. Fun fact: one of the nuns at the orphanage (cuz it’s an orphanage in Italy in 1980, they’re catholic.) nicknamed him Illuso because he was always pointing at things that weren’t there. As a tiny baby and a child, he would always be looking at things no one else can see (yes illuso is a natural stand user fight me). The nuns called him illuso as an insult, hoping to shame him into stopping. He never did. When he outgrew the orphanage, he decided to join the priesthood. He was 19, a priest in training, when the mafia came to the orphanage. They were collecting, and illuso knew they didn’t have the money this month. He tried to talk the mobsters down, but that went about as well as planned. 4 bullets to the chest, 3 open heart surgeries, and half a dozen resuscitations later, Illuso was released from the hospital. The orphanage had been shut down, and no one knew what had happened to the children or the nuns. With no where to go, illuso knew of one place that could use talents like his. The talents of steadily stealing money from the starving children of the church for a decade. It was during polpos test that illuso’s stand manifested. Not due to the arrow, but to protect its user from the other stand. Illuso was able to avoid Black Sabbath by hiding in his newfound mirror world until it was time to return the lighter to polpo (kinda cowardly but whatever.) he was assigned to risottos group by chance and was the last to join excluding Melone. But they loved him as if they had found him themselves.

do you have any headcanons about Spy’s backstory? I know there’s not much to go off of, but I haven’t seen many people’s headcanons of Spy’s life before he met Scout’s Ma

my headcanon will vary from day to day based on what would be interesting to add or subtract from any given story, but i’ve got a few consistent ones, some of which i’m sure are borrowed from friends and fic

-spy keeps up to date at least three languages at any given time to stay properly fluent in, but knows about six total well enough to have an in-depth conversation with minimal stumbling and is very good at picking up conversational levels of most languages quickly. because of this his accent will shift pretty significantly month by month depending on what language he’s cycling through keeping up to date on

-in a similar vein, he tries to keep up a kind of Parisian accent for the most part because he’d rather that people don’t find out that he’s from countryside France and not some sort of upper-class part of one of the larger cities.

-i think he was a young man during the war, in his early twenties, and due to having an interest in learning languages during his high school years he tried to offer up his services to the various movements going on throughout France. they found out he had a talent for mimicking accents (again picked up during his school years—i think spy was probably in theater when he was younger), and he was put to work doing various kinds of espionage.

-i take a considerable bit of liberty with how history works in the tf2 universe because so does tf2, but i think writing WWII as anything other than messy and grim and horrible would be really disrespectful. with that in mind, i think the end of the war was both a relief and a weight to spy, because he was congratulated for all the help he did that he could admit to, but had to bear the consequences of the less savory things he needed to do in order to complete important missions.

-i think he was sucked into the criminal underground doing similar espionage work because it was the only real skill he picked up during several of the most important years of his life, and he eventually started working as a hired killer on the basis of being extremely good at making it look like it was someone else, or in some cases, like a person who outright doesn’t exist.

-i think he needed to flee France for a while just to ensure his safety, and just like that he was traveling all over the globe working whatever contract seemed most fitting, elaborately constructing lies about his past until he seamlessly integrated those lies into his memory to replace less savory truths

-spy tf2, all of that said, is a romantic at heart and tended to get very invested in people he was only meant to be invested in on paper, meaning that although his record overall was phenomenal, it’s tainted by a couple of extremely messy missions that he’s left not wanting to talk about for a variety of reasons

-i like to think a solid amount of his face looks a bit different after various reconstructive surgeries following bad accidents, and that he lost the majority of his teeth in one of them and just decided to bite the proverbial bullet following the extremely literal one.

-depending on the day i’ll go back and forth on details about spy’s family, but i tend to assume he was either an only child or an older brother to a sibling that didn’t survive the war. i tend to headcanon his parents as genuinely well-meaning but very much struggling to recover from the weight of the first world war, and besides that as extraordinarily normal average Joe types that mister dashing-rogue-persona Spy Teamfortress would be mortified to introduce to the team. luckily for him, i also tend to headcanon both parents being entirely uninterested in his work for a variety of reasons, though i like to think he has an elderly mother somewhere who would roll her eyes fondly at him getting defensive over the state of his suit

-(and i tend to figure, only on the basis of spy remembering it between what i can only assume is a very chaotic lifestyle, that whatever time he spent in boston was slightly more important to him than a few days and a pretty lady, but ultimately his choice to dip is just one of many mistakes in his life)

Let Me Tell You About Tsubaki Yayoi

Tsubaki Yayoi was not the firstborn child of her generation, but merely the first to survive.

The Yayoi family is a family of nobles. One of the twelve great ruling families of the NOL known as the Duodecim, is a family known for their preservation of bloodline and strong views in purity of lineage, as this purity and bloodline has led to the family having many strong and elite users of Ars Magus, magic through scientific means. As such, Yayoi children aren’t so much born as they are bred, with only the skilled and talented users of Ars Magus being allowed to bear children for the family. This practice has made the Yayoi family with a small but highly elite family of soldiers and warriors extremely skilled in both martial and magical capabilities. 

However, this gift turned into a curse. 

As the pool of suitable mates shrank, the family only grew smaller and smaller. In desperation, they went to inbreeding. And like many noble families of this practice, health deficiencies and low birthrates were abound. Many of Tsubaki’s siblings had perished long before she was born due to their fragile bodies. However, Tsubaki was different. Strong, healthy, and a capable user of Ars Magus. A miracle child, and she was beloved, cherished, and spoiled as if she was the first born. But despite this treatment Tsubaki didn’t grow up bratty or arrogant. She was kind, learned young woman with high moral and sense of justice. And of those morals was only one real rule she was told to keep with her. 

To obey the Imperator, the leader of the world government, without question.

But before her days as military officer began, before she even entered the military academy, she was still a sheltered child. A sheltered child with only her family, her teachers, and her fellow nobles to keep her company. At least, until she met someone new. 

A boy, Jin Kisaragi. Not only a fellow heir of his family, but one of the few people that tolerated Tsubaki, despite his cold and conceited personality. It was in this chanced meeting, and one Jin had tried to shrug off, but the young and tenacious Tsubaki had forced the young man to open up to her, and the two became close, as close as siblings would. Granted, this bond was more due to Tsubaki’s stubbornness and childish clinging to a brother figure than her charisma, but within her then-tiny world of only family and officials, Jin was the closest thing she had to a friend at the time, even something close to crush as well, if a childish one.

And throughout her childhood Tsubaki was raised as any noblewoman would be. She was studious in both martial and literary arts, she was taught etiquette and manners befitting a lady of her stature, she was turned into an influential and beloved member of upper society, a noblewoman of the highest caliber.

And like all young girls, Tsubaki had a fun and rowdy school days. She attended school, she made friends, she lived carefree, with only her duties as a student council member being her main stressors. And there she made met Noel Vermillion and Makoto Nanaya. One a shy girl who could barely speak a sentence without stuttering, the other a bombastic and excitable firebrand whose bestial looks contrasted her carefree nature. Though it took a lot to get Noel out of her shy shell and to get Makoto to look beyond Tsubaki’s title and lineage, the three were soon inseparable friends. And these two were another set of people that opened Tsubaki’s small world.

But the good times never really last. 

After graduating the military academy, Tsubaki was placed in the Wings of Justice, a branch of the government that is not officially on paper. A secret task force, specially tailored to punishes criminals both within and outside the government without question as a secret police. As a woman raised to follow the will of Imperator without question, this was a well enough position for Tsubaki. It’d be a chance to distribute justice to those that the public couldn’t see or learn about lest a panic happen. It’d let her crush traitors and enemies of the state both within and out of the NOL. It could be a noble way to uphold her justice.

 However, the Wings of Justice are often seen as garbage disposal units due to their nature of cleaning up problems and rebels, and treated coldly by most of the military. 

And in this group, she was tasked to kill her best friends. 

Jin Kisaragi, now a seasoned war hero and practically her brother, had deserted the military for personal glory. Noel, one of the first friends she made outside of her family ties, had assisted a world-class terrorist. Due to these acts, they both had to be purged for the greater good and to keep the NOL’s reputation as a force for good intact.

This was devastating. Not only had her brother deserted, but her best friend had aided a criminal of the highest order. There had to be some explanation, right? This had to be some sort of misunderstanding, right?

Right?

Right?

... 

.... 

...

Alas, a mission is a mission. But who knows? Maybe Tsubaki can get Jin to explain himself in a way that makes sense. Maybe the intelligence on Noel was wrong or mishandled. Jin is a Major, a war hero. There’s no way he’d desert the army, much less to pursue personal glory at the drop of a hat. Jin was many things, but a glory hound and violent person was neither of them. And Noel? The poor girl shook like a leaf when having to talk to friends, let alone a terrorist, let alone save him. And besides, she was the secretary of Jin. If anything, she was probably trying to save Jin in the crossfire. This... this had to be a massive misunderstanding. She could go to Kagutsuchi, get things cleared up, report to the nearest military branch, and get this all squared away. 

But... just in case...

Izayoi, an ancient garb and weapon of Tsubaki’s family. A weapon that can steal the light of both opponent and user alike, and grant its wielder control over light. It was the one thing she had that could put her on equal footing with the war hero Jin and the mystically talented Noel. Even if it costs her sight and life. But that wouldn’t happen. It was just... insurance. Just in case. Worse case scenario only. An argument might spark, sure, especially with Jin, but the chances of her actually crossing swords was just impossible. 

It wasn’t going to happen right?

Right?

Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Never meant to be. 

Her brother was a traitor, just a selfish man after his own goals by his own means. Her best friend shouldn’t have even existed in the first place and took Tsubaki’s place by her brother’s side. And in the end, her belief meant nothing. Her justice meant nothing. Her life meant nothing. What could she do? What could she believe in? What was right? What was justice?

“Tsubaki Yayoi... Fall not into darkness. For I shall be your light.”

So... Why Talk About This

I’ve had Tsubaki on my mind a lot recently. I was watching some Continuum Shift storylines and Tsubaki’s always hits me. I like Tsubaki a lot, both as a character in the game and as a character in the story. Her being in the Blazblue world does a lot to ground a lot of the overly complicated lore in the world. It shows that the Duodecim is an actual noble family with rules, a public face, and has people that within that need to not act like self-centered asshole and do whatever they want, Jin. It shows that the NOL is an actual military government with standards that needs its soldiers acting in a proper manner, and will eliminate them if they cause too much of a fuss. It shows that all these special weapons deal quite the toll on people’s psyche and wellbeing for the power they give. Much like how Makoto’s existence shows how hard it is for normal people in the Blazblue universe to have a decent life, much like how Kagura’s existence shows that there is political turmoil within the Duodecim, Tsubaki’s existence shows the more noble side of the NOL and the duties they have to uphold for the sake of keeping the fractured peace as a world government.

And then Chronophantasma happened and ruined everything.

Okay, I’m being somewhat facetious here, but Chronophantasma did start the trend of ignoring everyone that wasn’t directly related to Ragna’s story. I’ll save my discussion on that for another day, but in just terms of Tsubaki...

The Izayoi was revealed to be an anti-Observer weapon, hard-countering Rachel, Amane, Noel, and arguably beings like Tagamahara. This is not discussed or utilized further beyond mentioning it.

Izayoi has the ability of Immortal Breaker, which can kill extremely powerful beings like Rachel, Terumi, Amane, and essentially anyone save for Izanami, Jin, and Hakumen. This is only discussed and utilized once to my memory.

With Jin as injured as he is in Central Friction, the Power of Order -basically the strongest plot armor in Blazblue canon- is slowly transferred over Tsubaki as she’s the next best fit for... y’know, Peacekeeper of the Planet’s Will to Maintain Order. She essentially becomes an SMT Order-Aligned protagonist and this is barely mentioned to my memory.

I could go on, but this is a celebration of Tsubaki’s character, not a critique/whining about post-Continuum Shift’s story progression. Anyway, I like Tsubaki. Quite a bit. If we ever get another mainline Blazblue title I really hope to see her in it.

Hi! So, I’ve just recently gotten into K-Dramas, and... I have a small issue, and that is though I LOVE them in the beginning, by the end they always disappoint me? Like, they start lighthearted and fun, and then by the end suddenly everyone’s in mortal peril, and I don’t care? Or they start all fantasy, and then it’s all about the romance in the end? So... Could you possibly recommend me ones that are good, or tone consistent, throughout? Please?

Hi! Thanks for dropping by for recs. These are some of my favorite asks. I just love going back through my watch list and finding dramas that fit a given criteria. It gets more fun the more dramas I've seen.

The thing about Kdramas that makes them a uniquely sticky beast is that many of them are live-shot week to week, at least for part of their run, and often the scripts are not fully written before filming begins. Popular Kdramas will also occasionally receive extensions which can cause further pacing and plot issues and (sometimes) cause a story to sputter out entirely. With the increasing prevalence of entirely preproduced dramas there's been an increase in overall drama quality and consistency in past years. That being said, Kdramas are still a decidedly mixed bag in terms of overall production quality. So it pays to either drop things with extreme prejudice if you stop enjoying them and watch widely, or to have a good drama filter friend (like me!) to give you vetted recs. As a genre a lot of the more "classic" feeling dramas have a tendency to start really light hearted and then swing super dramatic in the latter half. That's something I occasionally like, but lucky for you not all dramas are like that!

Your ask doesn't really tell me what genre of Kdrama most appeals to you, so I went through my list and tried to find you wide a variety of dramas that I think of as being well-paced and tonally consistent throughout. I've also tried to limit myself to dramas that I rated highly on MDL, although my primary criteria was "good and tonally consistent" so this list of dramas is kinda all over the map. But then, so are my tastes. Also, I kinda got the impression from your ask that you're not a fan of the uber-melodramatic side of kdramas and you want something a little more restrained and less soapy, so I tried to steer away from those more makjang dramas but did not entirely succeed, lol. I gave a couple sentences of description so you can more readily narrow down what you're interested in, and if you would like a more thorough review of the dramas some of these have full reviews on my blog which I went ahead linked where they exist.

Age of Youth: A well written slice-of-life ensemble drama about a group of 5 college age women who end up boarding together. There are a couple moments of high drama/trauma toward the end of the show that might be a turn off. But other than the finale the tone is consistent. 9/10 

Arang and the Magistrate: A dark fantasy fusion sageuk with a romance. I included this drama because it does a good job of developing the creepy worldbuilding and fantasy throughout. Though at points it can be a bit slow and the special effects are hella cheesy. 8/10

Argon: A tight, journalism driven suspense drama. Not always my genre but I found it very engaging, and at eight episodes it does not overstay its welcome. 8/10

Be Melodramatic: Another female-centric slice-of-life ensemble drama, though with an emphasis on fourth wall breaking comedy and clever dialogue. Very funny and heartfelt.  8.5/10

Cheese in the Trap: Maybe a controversial inclusion, but I very much enjoyed this drama. A slice-of-life college romance with psychological thriller elements. Some critics felt that the drama focused too heavily on the second male lead in the later half of the story, but YMMV. 8.5/10

Coffee Prince: Classic cross-dressing romance and still probably the best of its kind. A wonderfully nuanced and progressive handling of the subject matter, even after 13 years. Deals with serious subjects but doesn't go too melo with it. 8.5/10

Children of Nobody: My best of 2019, a dark psychological thriller about a child psychiatrist and a police detective who have to confront gray morality while attempting to track down a serial killer who only targets unrepentant child abusers. 9.5/10

Ex-Girlfriend Club: On the lighter side, a friends-to-lovers type romantic comedy about the writer of an autobiographical webtoon who has to figure out a way to get along with a group of his ex-girlfriends to make a movie based on his work. Only 12 episodes. 8.5/10

Go Back Couple: Also only 12 episodes (these shorter dramas tend to be better paced I find) a time-slip drama about a divorced couple who get the chance to relive their twenties and end up realizing they still have feelings for each other. This drama is both very funny and it had me bawling on multiple occasions. 9.5/10

Healer: A favorite of a lot of drama fans, this is an action-focused romance about an awkward soft boy with a secret identity as a highly skilled errand boy to criminals and an intrepid tabloid reporter who is his biggest fan. This drama is pretty tropey, but it's fun and the romance is great. 8.5/10

Hello Monster (aka I Remember You): A police procedural with a background love line about a criminal profiler looking for his lost brother and a detective looking for her father's murderer. One of my personal favorites. 10/10

Hit the Top (aka The Best Hit): A time-slip fish-out-of-water comedy about a 90s pop star who winds up in modern day Seoul and ends up befriending his biological son and meets old friends who his disappearance left in the lurch. 9/10

Incomplete Life (aka Misaeng): A realistic office drama that gave me real world work anxiety, focusing on a failed Go player who winds up an intern at a highly competitive shipping company and has to find a way to earn his keep even without the background and college education of his coworkers. Unbelievably well done ensemble drama. 9/10

Just Between Lovers: A romantic melodrama about two people whose lives were irrevocably changed by a tragic mall collapse that nearly killed them as children, meeting again as adults and finding comfort and healing in each other. A rough sit at times, but a wonderful love story with incredible acting. 9/10

Just Dance: High school, slice-of-life, drama about a dance club in a technical high school and a group of working class kids who reluctantly become involved in this club and befriend each other. Only 8 episodes (or 16 thirty minute episodes, depending on how you recon it.) 8.5/10

Life on Mars: Remake of the British show of the same name, this is a surreal time-slip police drama, about a forensics expert who gets shot in the head and wakes up in 1988. Or does he? He could also be dying on an operating table. It's hard to tell. Dark, suspenseful and trippy. 9/10

Matrimonial Chaos: An off-beat comedy about two dysfunctional couples who become inescapably mixed up in each others lives. One that's having a hard time getting divorced and another that's having a hard time getting married, and all the messy weird emotions that go along with that. This is another one of those, makes you laugh/makes you cry throughout dramas I have an affinity for. 9/10

Moment of Eighteen: A heartfelt high school drama about a straightforward but awkward loner who is forced to transfer to a new school, immediately earns the ire of a powerful student and experiences first love. Not my usual thing, but very well written with complex and likeable characters. 8/10

Mother: A cold and socially isolated woman becomes a temporary teacher and upon discovering one of her students is being severely abused and neglected, decides to pose as the child's mother and go on the run with her. Like Children of Nobody, this can be a bit of a rough watch because of the subject matter but it is very well done. 9.5/10

My Mister: A healing, human drama about a structural engineer in his 40s and a debt-ridden young woman in her 20s who end up crossing paths and saving each other from a miserable existence. My current all time favorite drama. Cannot say enough good things about it. Practically perfect in every way. 10/10

One Spring Night: A very restrained and naturalistic slow-burn romance about a woman who is about to get married and suddenly begins to question her relationship and a single father who had given up on love who find themselves irresistibly drawn to one another. 9/10

Prison Playbook: An ensemble slice-of-life drama centered on prisoners and correctional officers in their day to day lives. I find the actual het romances in this drama totally useless, but it's a large and talented cast playing a variety of lovable characters. 8/10

Psychopath Diary: Recent fave. A screwball black comedy about a mild mannered pushover who loses his memory and finds a diary that convinces him he's a psychopathic murderer, which gives him a huge boost of confidence from his new found identity, much to the chagrin of those around him and the actual owner of the diary himself. 8.5/10

Queen In Hyun's Man: A drama about a Joseon scholar who time travels to modern day Seoul and meets an actress who just landed a part playing the queen he served in the past. This one might be on the border line of too dramatic or tonally inconsistent, but it's got one of the most pitch perfect finales in Kdramas and the 45 min episodes keep it a snappy watch that doesn't drag or meander too much. 8/10

Reply 1988: A late 80s nostalgia drama about a group of families who all live off the same alley. Lovely family drama, comedy with a variety of romances. Long ass episodes especially later in the run, but I have rewatched the whole thing and I loved every minute of this show. 9.5/10

Save Me: A dark drama about a young woman who finds herself forced into a dangerous cult by her family, and is desperate to escape, and a group of 4 local young men who try to help her. One of the more unique and well done OCN thrillers. 9/10

School 2013: High school ensemble drama that launched a whole bunch of careers. In general I avoid school dramas (I know there have been three on this list so far, but those are like the only three, lol) but this show got me so invested in all these students and teachers. Also the two male leads are so shippable. 9.5/10

Secret Love Affair: A romantic melodrama about a piano prodigy from an underprivileged background who catches the eye of a married older woman and the two fall into a passionate affair. This drama involves cheating (obviously) but it's beautifully filmed and written and the music is to die for. 9.5/10

Signal: This is a supernatural crime thriller and a perennial favorite in the Kdrama community. An imbittered criminal profiler finds an antique police radio which allows him to speak with a police detective 15 years in the past, and uses this to crack cold cases and try to prevent brutal crimes from ever happening. 9/10

Six Flying Dragons: This one is a bit different from the others on the list, first of all because it's a more traditional historical drama, and secondly because it 50 episodes long. But it is so, so very good. And if you're looking for overall consistency in terms of storytelling and tone this drama has it in spades. 9/10

SKY Castle: A unique melodrama about a group of affluent competitive mothers who will go to any lengths to get they're children into the best medical schools, and a mysterious school coordinator with shady motives who gets brought in as a ringer to give them an edge. This show is kind of hard to sell but very entertaining and watchable. 7.5/10

Stranger (aka Secret Forest): The story of a stalwart prosecutor who, due to a childhood trauma is unable to feel the full spectrum of emotions, works with a bighearted police detective to root out corruption around a series of murders. This one’s rather cerebral and requires your full attention but the leads are amazing and there's a second season coming out this year I'm very much looking forward to! 9/10

The Nokdu Flower: Another sageuk drama about the latter years of the Joseon Dynasty surrounding three people who fall on different sides during the Donghak Peasant rebellion. Incredibly well written and involving historical drama. If you're not sure you're ready to commit to something like Six Flying Dragons, I think this would be another good entry point into the genre. The acting is amazing. 9/10

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes: A romantic melodrama and psychological thriller about a dangerous enigmatic young man on the cusp of becoming either a human being or a monster. He becomes involved in a fraught relationship with the sister of a police detective at the same time her protective older brother begins to focus on him as the prime suspect for a murder. High key moody and tragic if you're into that kind of thing (I am). 9/10

Touch Your Heart: On the complete other end of the drama spectrum, this show is pure unadulterated fluff, which managed to keep me giggling and swooning throughout the run, even though it's typically not my thing. An actress joins a law office as research for a role and falls for the ace attorney she's assisting. 8.5/10

WATCHER: Another OCN thriller about three different people with shady motivations who are connected to the same murder case and become involve in a corruption task force looking into dirty cops. One of those "trust nobody, everyone's a suspect" dramas with lovely complex characters and a fully engaging plot. 8.5/10

Sorry that got so out of hand! This is what happens when you don't give me a little more direction I guess. These are all dramas I quite enjoyed and I believe you will find something in there that will suit your fancy. This is a pretty accurate cross section of my tastes.

Who are/were your parents? (Know their names, occupations, personalities, etc.) A sweet woman who just wanted to be a good mother,  &  a guy that skipped out on her.  That’s why she ended up murdered.  I hope he ended up a Stalker.

Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like?  A little brother named Adrian. We were separated at a young age.  He went missing during the Black Mesa incident,  but  .  .  .  so did I.

Where do you live now, and with whom? Describe the place and the person/people. I live on an aircraft carrier with my surviving comrades  &  the kids I took from the Combine back in Alaska.  They’re grown now,  but just barely.  I’m responsible for every soul aboard,  regardless of age.

What is your occupation?    Career military man.

How would you describe your childhood in general? It was relatively peaceful,   &  then my mother got remarried,  &  then it was hell.  At least I got Adrian out of the deal.  

What is your earliest memory? Being introduced to Adrian.

How much schooling have you had? High school dropout.  Joined the Marines instead of going to college.

Did you enjoy school? Not really.  I was a smart but unfocused student,  with a lot on my mind.

Where did you learn most of your skills and other abilities? Military training  &  real life experience.

While growing up, did you have any role models? If so, describe them. I don’t think I ever really did.  

While growing up, how did you get along with the other members of your family? I adored my mother,  I was inseparably close with Adrian,  protective over him.  Not that it kept us from getting separated after our mother died.  But I tried.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? A semitruck driver.  You know,  drive all over the country,  listen to music,  get paid to do it.  Childish dream.

As a child, what were your favorite activities? Climbing,  running,  seeing how high in trees I could get.  Sneaking through fences to get into places I wasn’t supposed to be.

As a child, what kinds of personality traits did you display? Mmm,  brashness,  protectiveness.  Zeal for life. 

As a child, were you popular? Who were your friends, and what were they like? I’d say I was about average.  I had a small friend group in elementary  &  middle school.  Stopped seeing them after everything went to shit.

When and with whom was your first kiss? A girl in high school,  in my first year,  before I dropped out.  Sweet girl.  I kissed her without asking,  thought that was the right thing to do,  like in movies ?  Stupid.  She told me never to do that again.  I didn’t.

Are you a virgin? If not, when and with whom did you lose your virginity? No,  no.  My first was the class whore that same year I had my first kiss.  Looking back I think I was a little young to be dipping my toes into that particular water,  especially since I proceeded to do an awful lot of swimming in it that same year.  I’m lucky things didn’t turn bad for me.

What do you consider the most important event of your life so far? That’s a toss up.  Joining the Marines,  end of the world,  getting the Avalon Veil.  Meeting  .  .  .  well.  Maybe not.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? In spite of myself ?  Getting those kids out of the factory.

What is your greatest regret? .  .  .  I couldn’t keep us from being separated.

What is the most evil thing you have ever done? Where do I even begin ?

Do you have a criminal record of any kind? I did back when it mattered. 

When was the time you were the most frightened? When I woke up  &  found the sky black with Combine aircraft.

What is the most embarrassing thing ever to happen to you? I’m not really sure.  I don’t care much about being embarrassed unless it’s in front of my troops,   &  things before that kind of blend together.  

If you could change one thing from your past, what would it be, and why? Does it have to be something it’s in my power to change ?  There’s not a lot I would change about my own actions at this point,  but there’s things I wish I could have influenced beyond my control.

What is your best memory? Some blurry summer afternoon when we were kids,  sitting outside eating popsicles with the sprinkler turned on us.

What is your worst memory? The murder of my mother.

Are you basically optimistic or pessimistic?    Pessimistic.  I find it hard to believe that things are going to just turn out OK,  even if we try hard to change the course we find ourselves on.

What is your greatest fear?    Being completely  &  totally without options,  without freedom ;   finally being killed.

What are your religious views?    If there is a god,  I hope he at least finds all this entertaining.

What are your political views?    I was largely indifferent towards politics back when it mattered.  I always felt like whoever’s in charge makes the rules  &  it rarely varies from one leader to another.  Looks like I was more right than I knew.

What are your views on sex?    It’s a commodity,  it’s a weapon.  It’s whatever we want it to be.  I enjoy it when I have it.  I don’t have it with anyone on the Avalon Veil,  of course.  Makes it harder to come by,  but that just makes it more enjoyable.

Under what circumstances do you find killing to be acceptable or unacceptable?    Wouldn’t be much of a military man if I couldn’t.  Besides,  if you can’t kill these days,  your only future is gonna be as a Combine citizen keeping your head down  &  hoping Civil Protection doesn’t decide to knock it off for you.

In your opinion, what is the most evil thing any human being could do? It’s already been done,  whatever it is.  A thousand thousand times over.

What do you believe makes a successful life? If you’re alive,  you’re succeeding.

How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings (i.e. do you hide your true self from others, and in what way)? I keep myself to myself for the most part,  because I can’t afford to be venting everything I feel out to my crew.  But I am mostly honest in what I do say about what I think.

Professionally,  mostly with military decorum.  I’m not rude to people for no reason,  but I can be abrasive at times.  Not intentionally.

Who is the person you respect the most, and why? Probably Nick,  because he’s stuck with me this long,   &  risen to the occasion despite clearly not being happy with my position or how I obtained it.

What is your idea of good entertainment (consider music, movies, art, etc.)? We play music on the Avalon Veil sometimes.  Haven’t got any movies or anything like that.  I like to watch the crew enjoy themselves dancing in their downtime.

Do you smoke, drink, or use drugs? If so, why? Do you want to quit? I’ll smoke or drink when I’m able to get my hands on either.  It’s a good release,  of course I don’t want to stop.  Drugs,  though,  that’d impair me too much.

Describe the routine of a normal day for you. How do you feel when this routine is disrupted? A typical day,  not going ashore,  involves running through training exercises,  overseeing daily chores,  holding meetings with my higher officers,  so on.  If it’s interrupted,  then that’s cause to be upset because that means we have a  really  big  problem.

What is your greatest strength as a person? Willingness to do what needs to be done.

What is your greatest weakness? I’m necessarily self — involved.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? There’s nothing I can think of right off.

Are you generally introverted or extroverted? Extroverted,  as I have to be.

Are you generally organized or messy? Organized to the letter.  I punish disorganization.

Best of 2018: other stuff

I’ve posted lists of my most popular posts and my favorite pieces of my own writing, but I want to take a second to plug some my favorite other stuff.  I’m a pretty big media consumer, despite being a little out of touch with what’s popular and newsworthy.  But since I tend to hyperfocus and perseverate, you can rest assured that everything on this list has been tested to the limits and truly loved.

The Adventure Zone

Yes, I’m extremely late to the game.  If you’re not familiar, this is a live-play fantasy gaming podcast (it started out as D&D, but they’ve expanded) where 3 brothers and their father create amazing adventures with hilarious and relatable characters, perfectly balancing drama with humor and action.  It may sound boring, but they’ve created DragonQuest (Balance arc) and Scooby-Doo (Amnesty arc) esque worlds that are easy to get lost in.  There’s approximately 100 hours of content so far, so it’s a commitment to catch up, but entirely worth the time.

I read Gone Girl years ago, but I was unaware that the author had more books to her name.  These are as good as Gone Girl, and arguably creepier.  Sharp Objects is beautifully written, with the power of angry words as a central plot point.  Dark Places is more suspenseful, and it has more characters, tackling the way in which small actions create ripples in our own lives and those of others.  HUGE trigger warnings for both of these.  The TWs are spoilers, though, so think of them this way:  If you’re a fan of Criminal Minds, you’ll love these books.  If you’re not, you probably won’t.  Both have emeto in them (and so does Gone Girl).  I have a feeling that the author might be a fan of whump. :)

The Adventure Zone graphic novel

See above.  They made the podcast into a comic book.  It’s genius.

TV

American Vandal

This is a Netflix show that I feel like is simultaneously very popular and something nobody knows exists.  It’s been a long time since I lost sleep over a TV show, but I couldn’t rest until I finished the first season.  It’s a reality series/documentary following a 15-year-old boy’s quest to investigate a tagging incident for which his classmate has been (wrongfully?) accused.  It sounds low-stakes, and it is, compared to something like Serial that investigated a murder, but it rides the line of seriousness and humor that perfectly captures the gravity of teenage life.  It’s crass, it’s disgusting, it takes an inordinate amount of time to lay out the details of summer camp hookups and phone pranks, and yet it also shows a boy’s deep-seeded worries about how his actions will affect his college and career choices.  The series is amazingly well produced, considering that it’s the product of high school sophomores working out of their school’s media center.  It’s the kind of show you’ll watch on the edge of your seat the first time, then continue to giggle at it for weeks afterward.

The Vietnam War

Yes, one of those PBS Ken Burns documentaries.  If it’s not your cup of tea, I understand.  It didn’t used to be mine.  But this isn’t the kind of film you fell asleep to in history class.  The narration balances geography, history, and government lessons with real-life anecdotes, all presented with original footage of the most-photographed war.  I’m a nut for the era, but it’s an incredibly poignant viewing experience that brings a lot to the table.  Segments on music, pop culture, protesting, and the perspectives of various cohorts (African Americans, Viet Cong, those who fled to Canada, nurses, children of refugees, etc.) combine into a patchwork story that’s well worth the viewing time.

Sharp Objects

As discussed above, this is a thriller/mystery adapted from the page to a miniseries for HBO (but google it and you can stream for free).  Amy Adams portrays the main character, and it’s about 75% true to the book.  It’s not as good as the book, as most of these things turn out to be, but it is good.  Lots of angst, illness/injury, emeto, etc.  But, as I said, it’s like Criminal Minds in terms of content.  TWs abound.

Films

First Man

This is a perfect film.  It’s a biopic, and there’s not a lot of action, but it’s thought provoking.  It’s exceptionally well-written, the acting is spot-on, and the music and visuals are beautiful.  It makes a man’s extraordinary experiences into something intimate and relatable by de-mystifying it.  Fight with the wife, swim with the kids, go to the moon, ho hum.  Tis the rhythm of life.  It’s all presented at the same pace, with much gravity (pun intended) given to body language and well-placed symbolism.  It’s definitely a shoe-in for awards, and it’s my pic for Best Picture.

Isle of Dogs

This is a bizarre piece, but it’s genius.  A bit like American Vandal in its way of being simultaneously sincere and off the wall, this animated film occupies an awkward collegiate space--it’s not for kids, yet not really geared for adults.  It’s funny, cynical, and very sad, though it’s not that kind of sad dog movie (again, spoilers, but I’ll say that it’s ok to get attached to your favorite characters).  This film is art, for sure, and it’s also extremely enjoyable.

Boy Erased

This is a tough watch, because the TWs are the plot: A boy struggles to come to terms with his sexuality and recover from the trauma of sexual assault while participating in an abusive conversion therapy course.  There are no plot twists.  It’s exactly what it sounds like.  But the acting is gorgeous, especially Lucas Heges as the main character and Nicole Kidman as his mother.  It’s a beautifully angsty movie.  It has a largely hopeful ending, but there are almost no lighthearted moments.  All the same, it has a satisfying feel, and didn’t make me feel down when I left the theater.

Colette

This is the ceiling-shatterer of this awards cycle.  As promised in glimpses of the trailer, it’s ground breaking in its portrayal of female agency and LGBT characters in a historical context.  The beginning is a bit slow and Jane Austen-ish, but from the midpoint to the end, there are multiple mind-blowing revelations and shocking lines that take the story from a little known page of history to a spectacle representative of the Parisian salon culture from whence it came.  

Cam

I know this is a strange choice.  It’s a second-rate, made-for-Netflix pseudo-thriller about camgirls and the horrors of modern technology.  The reason it’s on my list, though, is because it’s very obviously meant to compete with Assassination Nation (even using some of the same actors), and, unlike its big-budget counterpart, it actually hits its mark.  It forces the viewer to think about the lines between respect and abuse, exploitation and sex work, and the meaning of privacy in an increasingly digitized world,

Artsnacks

Subscription boxes are nothing new, but I’m especially pleased with this one.  Instead of just sending stuff, it cultivates a community.  You receive a box of 4 to 6 art products (typically a pencil, a couple pens and markers, and a paint and/or brush--things that are expendable, so you don’t accumulate junk even as a long-time subscriber) and a piece of candy.  The game is to use all the products in the box to create a piece and post it on social media, then connect with other artists.  Artsnacks also releases collections and pushes additional challenges (such as Inktober) that encourage skill development and interaction among participants.

Who are your friends? Do you have a best friend? Describe these people. I have lots of friends. Santana is my wife, Quinn is my best friend, Kurt and Blaine are my gay best friends. Hmm Oh also Marley! She is quiet but amazing. 

Do you have a spouse or significant other? If so, describe this person. Yes, Santana is really cute and loveable but can kill someone too. Don’t get on her bad side.m

Have you ever been in love? If so, describe what happened. I currently am on love. When I kissed her, I melted.

These two were so similar that I decided to combine them, hope you don’t mind.

Izuru Kamukura

- He feels like you should be less interesting.

- But you kind of aren’t.

- The way you kind of just wander around aimlessly for hours is amusing.

- How you can turn a trip to the mall into an amazing and well detailed fantasy story is a skill that you have that he thinks is cute.

- You start yelling the introduction when you open your front door and search for a piece of paper.

- He would read your stories and piece together what outings they were.

- A story about picking up a queen and king to take them to a safe house when them and their kingdom was being attacked… that time Sonia and Gundam had to get their house gassed due to termites and you let them stay here for the week.

- One about a wood elf and a drow elf being forced to judge an eating contest between two trolls by the human chef the trolls captured to make the food… When Akane and Twogami had an eating competition at Teruteru’s house and Hanamura forced you and Izuru to stay in case something bad happened.

- Keeping you out of trouble while you were in a floaty state was something else he did.

- He basically kept you from doing anything weird.

- Not that you knew what you were doing.

Kiibo

- He’s so confused by you.

- How could you not know any kind of human standards when you started living in the human world from the very beginning?

- He doesn’t know why you think magic exists either.

- There’s been plenty of scientific studies from thousands of years ago that proved magic to be non-existent.

- He’s shown them to you

- But no.

- The chocolate you get in your basket every year is from a rabbit, and the gifts you get that aren’t labeled from anyone is from santa.

- He does like it when you write stories with someone you say was inspired by him.

- Like a steampunk robot boy and his faithful teenage inventor.

- Or an ancient stone guardian in the shape of a teenage boy.

- When doing things weird, Kiibo doesn’t know when to stop you.

- Usually it’s too late.

- But he enjoys learning about regular human life with you.

- So that’s a perk.

Junko Enoshima

- She loves how you just kind of float around the halls.

- You’re never really sure what your next class is, and neither is anyone else.

- Especially since you call them things like scrolling and training.

- You light up when Junko knows that the things you are talking about are english and gym.

- When you walk on the street together you spout descriptions about them as if they were stone roads filled with peasant owned stalls. Then you looked at Junko and described a beautiful pink haired queen being forced to walk the peasants road because her horse carriage was in the shop.

- Then Junko would tap into her queen persona and yell “Bow down peasants! Your queen has graced you with her presents!”

- You love it when she changes personalities, by the way.

- You’ll play along with whatever she pulls with full enthusiasm.

- Even if you both get in trouble.

- Which is an aspect she loves.

Korekiyo Shinguji

- He finds you extremely interesting.

- The way he met you was the first interesting thing.

- You were just sitting in an empty classroom all by yourself, staring at the ceiling.

- He kind of just sat at the opening of the door until he decided to approach you.

- And when he did you snapped out of your little trance and scooted backwards a bit so your back touched the wall.

- “After his long winded observation, the onyx haired vampire decided it was time to introduce himself.”

- Shinguji put a finger to his mask covered mouth.

- “Oh? Am I the onyx haired vampire?”

- “His stance was fierce yet sophisticated. Though it intimidated the elf a bit, it also intrigued them.”

- You stood and looked him in the eye.

- “‘They got up from their resting spot to make themselves look more dangerous.’ My name is F/N L/N. I am a lythari in search for the Glass of the Forgotten. Have you seen it in this area by any chance?”

- You were kind of confusing him, then he realized.

- “You mean this pair of glasses I found in the other room?”

- As soon as your sharp eyes met with the glasses, they became soft and friendly. You had come out of your magical adventure status and into your regular head in the clouds one.

- “Hmm? Can I have those please? A friend of mine lost them. I can’t remember which though…”

- Since your first meeting, you had kept hanging around Shinguji, in search of things that you could turn into fantastical stories.

- This just gave Korekiyo all the more reason to study you and your ‘magical’ antics.

Ryoma Hoshi

- He is constantly pulling you from possible embarrassing situations.

- A lot of face palms are in order.

- You even wrote a book with the two of you as inspired characters.

- “The most deadly sin of all.”

- It’s about a reckless satyr and their intelligent gnome partner in search of the demons of the seven deadly sins, Greed (Togami), Wrath (Nidai), Gluttony (Akane), Lust (Teruteru), Envy (Hajime), Sloth (Himiko), and Pride (Ouma). So they can defeat them, collect the relics they hold and summon the devil king so they can kill them once and for all.

- It’s already a bestseller.

- So much so that you and Hoshi get recognized on the streets and complimented on for the general descriptions of the characters and the lovable arc the gnome goes through as he tries to get over his past as a criminal so he can get closer to the satyr.

- Whenever this happens your imagination explodes and Hoshi has to stop you from yelling some sort of line you would write in a book.

- You love calling Hoshi’s tennis matches battles.

- He sometimes wishes that he was up there to stop you from yelling stuff like, “Go Hoshi! Smite the beast right through the heart!”

- But he appreciates the enthusiasm.

Gundam Tanaka

- At first he thought you were just playing along with his act.

- Then he noticed how you were doing it all the time.

- You always stayed in a floaty state of mind until Gundam went into character.

- Then you became somewhat of a supervillain with a super intense voice.

- You were kind of like, all of what Gundam wanted to be when he was younger.

- You once sang a rock version of “You’re Welcome” from Moana to him while pretending to be a demi god.

- He absolutely loves the things you’re willing to do to prove that you were magic.

- Wait are those his deer?

- Whenever you weren’t in your state of magic and adventures, you barely knew what was going on.

- You’ll just switch from badass relentless supervillain to a little soft rabbit who was dropped off in the middle of who knows where.

- Whenever this happened, you would walk over to Gundam and quietly ask him what you need to do.

- Gundam gets fuzzy feelings when he thinks about this part of your personality.

- But for some reason when he thinks of your villain persona, he feels like he’s getting a burst of adrenaline.

- He can’t decide which one is better.

- So he asks you what you think.

- “‘The high elf scratched their head in confusion. They didn’t really know how to answer this.’ Well how about, ‘They said in a low voice. ‘You love both sides equally instead trying to like one half of a person better than the other.’”

- Gundam thought on this for a bit, then he laughed.

- “You are correct as always S/O. It was foolish of me to ask such a question.”

- Then you went back to your fluffy state.

- “Mm, I don’t know. It was just something I came up with on the spot. You don’t have to take it seriously.”

- Then Gundam laughed some more and caressed your face.

- “Its okay. You’re right. I should love all of you. Not just some of you.”

- “Thank you.”

Kokichi Ouma

- You started off as rivals.

- In your eyes, you began your meeting with him with a duel. He had insulted your mechanical friend and you wanted revenge.

- You constantly referred to him as a black hearted halfling who used his magic to lie and manipulate people.

- While he called you a delusional asylum escapee.

- When he tries to mess with you, you tend to have your head in the clouds and unknowingly ignore him.

- When you do this he starts whining loudly.

- When he did this the first time you snapped out of your trance and glared at him.

- “The mighty high elf angrily stared at her rival for interrupting their peaceful visit to their mind palace. ‘You’re lucky I don’t blink you to the Ethereal Plane.’ They growled. ‘For what reason do you have for interrupting me?’”

- Then Ouma blinked at you and smiled.

- “I was just trying to save you from your own insanity. One more minute inside your own head and you would have gone bananas for real!”

- You continued glaring at him.

- “Or maybe not. Who knows, I am a liar after all.”

- You laughed.

- “‘The opinion of my sanity is my decision and my decision alone.’ Then the high elf smiled. ‘There’s no room for any opinion even close to one made by a shorty like you.’”

- But you both learned to settle your differences.

- You stopped calling each other names. You agreed to stop making fun of Ouma’s height as long as Ouma stopped teasing your soft kitten like side.

- And whenever you went to your soft side, he...sometimes lets you know what’s going on.

- Not always.

- I want to make that clear.

- You would always cross your arms and make a cute huff when he didn’t

- Which is why he didn’t often.

Angie Yonaga

- She always finds your strange mannerisms as a blessing from Atua.

- Whenever you began spouting whatever about two pixies traveling the world together, she would out her hands together and says two or three words in a language you don’t know to thank him.

- She loves and triggers your soft side a lot.

- “Uhh, Agnie, can you please help me write my next book. My fans are getting antsy.”

- “Okay S/O! Do you want to pray with me? Atua may have some good ideas he wants to share!”

- “Ah, okay.”

- Then you and Angie would get into a prayer session.

- Thanks to Angie’s prayers, you have written plenty of amazing books.

- But this was mostly because some of these prayer sessions can last for a long while. And when they end you’ll just sit down and write mindlessly then publish a book without really knowing what it was about.

What is your full name? “phaedra chiara cattaneo.”

Where and when were you born? “i was born on the amalfi coast july 16th, 1995.”

Who are/were your parents? "my dad, agostino cattaneo, is a shipping heir from italy and my mom, sophia lamond cattaneo, is an artist, specifically a painter! she kept her other last name as her middle name because she had a name before she met my father. they’re wonderful, oh god! i could go on for an entire hour about the both of them. they met in santorini around new years eve back in like 1993. it was one of those whirlwind loves, you know? they met and it was like fireworks were going off from every angle of the earth. they fell madly in love and got married on new years eve 1994 going into 1995, no one knew my mom was already pregnant with me but she was! my grandparents on my dad’s side were super pissed mostly because they’re traditional old italians whereas my mother was a pretty, young girl from australia who fell in love with a man like, 15 years her senior...they quickly got over it, though. my mom did everything to make them happy! she learned italian, she married him before having me! ugh, i’m going to text them now.” 

Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like? “i have one half-sibling from my dad’s first marriage when he was just 18. we’re sort of close, but i rarely see him! he’s an investment banker, totally opposite of what i do! he never misses an opening show of my tour, though. what a sweetie.” 

Where do you live now, and with whom? Describe the place and the person/people. “i live in beverly hills with my three dogs and my best friend actually moved in when everything happened a year and a half ago. my dogs are john jeanes but jj for short in honor of...well, you know! then i have severus & minerva from harry potter, but i call them sevy and mini! my house is super earthy on the outside, it has vines growing up for an aesthetic look and privacy. the inside is more modern.” 

What is your occupation? “i’m a singer!”

What is your earliest memory? “my earliest memory is running around on the coast when i was like three with my neighbor boyfriend who totally wasn't my real boyfriend but i loved him.” 

How much schooling have you had? “i graduated high school.”

Did you enjoy school? “i did, honestly. some classes more than others. i was trash at mathematics, always. thrived at history and languages, though.”

Where did you learn most of your skills and other abilities? “through trial and error but also from my mother.”

As a child, what kinds of personality traits did you display? “i was very impatient which has changed now! i also loved to say no, my mom joked that was my first word.”

Who were your friends, and what were they like? “i was rather loved as a child, thank god. i had three close friends, one was my cousin adelaide! we’re still extremely fucking close to this day. the other was kate drummond who lives with me now and then tyson warby aka ty! we’re all extremely close still, not a day goes by we don't talk.”

When and with whom was your first kiss? “my first kiss was greg parsons on the school yard in middle school. so embarrassing, but it was a dare! i never turn down a dare!”

If not, when and with whom did you lose your virginity? “i’m not a virgin. i lost it to my friend boyfriend who was a legendary rockstar’s son! his name is blue, y’all surely know him. i love him still, but not in that same way. he’s always the first one to check on me throughout my day.”

What do you consider the most important event of your life so far? “probably meeting jj.”

Who has had the most influence on you? “my mother, jj, and myself.”

What do you consider your greatest achievement? “winning a grammy!”

What is your greatest regret? “my biggest regret is going to paris in august 2018.”

What is the most evil thing you have ever done? “the most evil thing i’ve done was in high school and there was a girl who did not get along with me and i completely embarrassed her by having her kicked out of a party. she wasn't even doing anything, we just had beef.”

Do you have a criminal record of any kind? “nope!”

When was the time you were the most frightened? “when jj died.”

What is the most embarrassing thing ever to happen to you? “i fall down on stage often, honestly.” 

If you could change one thing from your past, what would it be, and why? “i’d change going to paris. i don't think you really need to know why because that’s rather fucking obvious.”

What is your best memory? “there was one night after the academy awards that jj and i were a bit drunk at home and this beautiful song came on over the speakers. it was an alt-j song! we were up on the rooftop and he just took my hand and started to slow dance with me. i remember laying my head into his chest and crying, i wasn't sure why i was crying but i was and he was so tender with me.”

What is your worst memory? “i don't want to answer this.”

Are you basically optimistic or pessimistic? “i try to be the most optimistic i can be.”

What is your greatest fear? “i have faced that, it was losing a loved one.”

Does your treatment of them change depending on how well you know them, and if so, how? “i’m a sweet little baby and i know it. i think that life is so fragile and you absolutely never understand what others are going through to be the way that they are, so why waste energy being a bitch? don’t get me wrong, i will stand my ground given that i need to, but in general until i am tested i am polite and sweet.”

Who is the most important person in your life, and why? “i would say my dogs because they’re literally my emotional support! my mother and father as well, as my close friend group.”

If so, describe what happened. “i have been in love multiple times. each love is grand and very different, though i have not felt love since jj’s ascension to heaven or the after life. i haven't allowed myself to feel that way, though. i know i am keeping myself in a box over that, it’s confining and keeping me from my full life but i am not ready yet.”

dnd characters I’ll never use: player or npcs

I already shared this with my dnd playing friends but I’ll put them here too to spread the love far and wide. Disclaimer: I’m not at all experienced with dnd, these are all largely based on fun character ideas and not very rooted in stats, class stuff or tactics. Genders are of course always arbitrary and interchangeable.

Before she was a party member, she was a store clerk. Worked at a soul-sucking supermarket. Has very high persuasion, charisma and constitution. Why? Dude, she’s worked in customer service. She had to pretend to be friendly while putting up the with the worst humanity can offer. War is nothing. She’s being dragged along on this quest, but is largely apathetic. Her job has crushed her spark for good. True neutral. A bard? Maybe? It makes sense that she went to music school and ended up with a retail career.

A paladin/knight who thinks he’s Don Quixote - naive and good-hearted, a classic white knight who wants to rescue all the damsels and ride all the noble steeds. The drawback is that he’s a complete idiot. Very low wisdom and intelligence. Good combat stats, and amusingly high charisma. Probably a noble. Very green. Lawful good to the max.

A fine lady who is extremely posh, quite elderly. Lost her rich husband recently. Probably owns a poodle called Wetherby. Wields the biggest, most vicious giant axe you’ve ever seen. It’s called Verity. She is, in fact, a barbarian. Lawful neutral.

(Based on a tumblr post) This character is secretly just two gnomes stacked in a trench coat. Nobody but the DM must know. Try to keep up the facade for as long as possible. Why are they doing this stunt? Literally just fee evasion. It’s cheaper to pay for one human with very short arms than two gnomes. Obviously chaotic, neutral or good. Maybe each is a bit different.

An ex-schoolteacher who becomes the group mother. Literally. She calls the party her ‘children’. A bard, Sound-of-Music style? Or a cleric. Very patronising in the way she speaks. However, much liked. An all-rounder. Lawful good. Might make a good patron-type npc.

A bard who literally thinks life is a musical. Always singing; speaks only in song, or if she does speak, it’s in a disney-like tone - strong Giselle from enchanted vibes. Terrible stealth modifiers, because she does her own theme music like Kronk. She and the above paladin knight fall in love instantly. Nobody has ever understood either of them until now. They will definitely insist on romantic duets and a giant fancy wedding, despite not really knowing each other. Noble background; an ex actress. Lawful good.

Someone otherwise useful and skillful, perhaps a rogue or a fighter, who has a weakness of instantly falling in lust with any villain they encounter. They just have a thing for the bad guys/girls. Chaotic good, or lawful neutral.

A character who can’t seem to talk without mentioning her boyfriend, Freddie: ‘it’s just like Freddie, my boyfriend, said the other day… Back in the city, where I met my boyfriend, Freddie… damn, this monster is so tough even Freddie, my boyfriend, might not be able to kill it!’ Freddie does not, as it turns out, exist. After this is disclosed, the question is - was she lying? Does she actually think Freddie is real? Is she crazy? Or did Freddie exist, once, and some magical weirdness is going on? Who knows. The poor girl - probably a cleric or someone religiously magical - clearly has some mental shit to deal with.

A mage or sorcerer who performs magic in the style of irl kids’ magicians. They don’t actually believe in magic, and keep insisting it’s all just clever tricks and illusions. Idk enough about the magic-type classes to decide which one this would suit best - maybe a book-learned character, who thinks their entire education system was just really in-character with the whole ‘real magic’ thing. A wizard? Very lawful - so lawful they can’t conceive of a force as irrational and physics-defying as magic. Probably good.

A character who is the butler of another party member - jeeves-style, long-suffering and ever efficient. His most common line is “*sigh* very good, sir/ma’am.” It would be cool if he was a monk class character - maybe coming from a kind of ‘training temple’ for butlers, Artemis Fowl style. Has the patience of a god, the combat skills of a champion street-fighter, and makes excellent tea. Might be a good player character for someone who’s new to dnd and is coming with a friend - or rather, a good character for someone who is experienced and is bringing an inexperienced friend, whose butler they could be. The butler could then advise and cover for their inexperienced ‘master’.

A variation on the above: a character travelling with their fussy, overbearing mother or father, another obviously good one for a friend to teach their inexperienced new friend how to play.

A religious character, probably a cleric or paladin, who has an element of the creationist fangirl-religious Christianity of the midwest to her. Speaks in a texas drawl. She wears a shirt that says ‘what would [insert name of deity here] do?’ and is always singing the praises of their lord/lady and saviour, trying to convert people and reminding everyone of various rules from their holy book. Lawful neutral, because she follows the rules of the faith no matter how immoral they may be. Often burst into hymns. Everything good that happens, it was the lord’s blessing. Everything bad, it was punishment for some obscure sin. Probably had a rough background and found and adhered to this faith later in life, as a kind of religious rebirth - maybe to escape a criminal past…?

A character who is a child but has all the skill in certain areas of an adult. Very creepy, Wednesday Addams vibes. Talks like a grown up. Dark and cynical. Always underestimated. Probably a sorcerer. Neutral or maybe a tad evil. Maybe could be a halfling or something, to implement that small-cute-person stealth bonus. Occasionally takes on the performance of being a normal little girl to manipulate NPCs - fake crying to get to the front of a queue, etc.

Two PCs who are long lost siblings. The DM and the two players know this. No other players and none of the characters know - including the two characters who are related. One or both of them may know they have a lost sibling, but it is only in the course of the game that they find out who they are to each other. I feel like this would be most interesting if they were of a non human species, and of very different backgrounds and classes, and maybe different alignments.

A character who is joining the party as a tourist. He has now retired from adventuring in his homeland and travels around other lands, getting the ‘authentic local experience’ by tagging onto other people’s quests. If you’re in a steampunk-y setting or your DM will let you homebrew it a bit, it would be great if he had some kind of camera and was always snapping pictures at inappropriate times. It would be even better if some of these pictures ending up being vitally useful later in the game. Probably neutral good, probably something pretty low-key class wise. Could be joined by a tour-guide type PC.

A variation on the above: a young character who is trying to break into the adventuring career market and is tagging along on work experience, always taking notes. This might be a good one for a new and inexperienced player to help them learn without compromising their characterisation. Neutral good, any class really.

A member of a certain race who is convinced they are of another race, probably due to adoption, and will attack anyone who tries to correct her, like Ellie in ice age 2. The more physically different her ‘real’ race and her ‘adopted’ race are, the better. A warrior type, hot headed. Chaotic something. Maybe even a barbarian. Someone you would be too scared to contradict.

A case of mistaken identity - the party assume this character is someone, but later it is revealed that they are in fact just a delivery boy or a maidservant. There was a mix up, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and when the party mistook them for a powerful ally they were planning to meet, they were too awkward to correct them so they just went with it. The party shouldn’t know they aren’t who they say they are until the person reveals it, either by making enough mistakes and confessing or by being outed by someone else. An NPC or a player. Probably chaotic good. Definitely a people pleaser. Poor kid.

A ‘male’ character who is actually a woman wearing a fake moustache. She had to fake her gender to get into a prestigious all male institution - maybe a cleric or paladin, or a wizard at wizard school. Definitely a con-woman type background. Intensely good persuasion modifier so that people genuinely believe she is a man as soon as the moustache goes on. Other players may or may not know her real gender from the start. Chaotic good.

An adventuring couple who have decided to spend their honeymoon, or second honeymoon, fighting and killing with the rest of the party. Fighters or another physical-combat-heavy class. Good. Full of romantic stories about people they beheaded together and times they almost died together. Bonus points if they have, are having or have had an adventuring child too - the kind who was already wielding a tiny knife in the cradle. Good for couples who play together, and good if one partner is just teaching the other to play, so they can stick together and help them.

A druid who has spent her last ten years in animal form. She has now almost forgotten how to be a person. Still forgets she isn’t an animal sometimes. Lots of animalistic mannerisms and slip ups - trying to fly, using the wrong body language, etc. She’s just very frazzled by everything right now, so please just go easy on her, okay? She’s trying her best to readjust.

A pirate woman who sailed with an all-female pirate crew on a ship with a massively misandristic name. She’s almost definitely gay and very much a bitch to men. Sailor-pirate background, probably a simple fighter, chaotic neutral af. Bonus points if she was the captain. Double bonus points if she was the captain because she engineered a mutiny and is now constantly afraid of finding her jilted ex captain (and possibly also her ex lover) hot on her heels. More bonus points if she is a very butch, bearded dwarf lady.

Champion athlete who turned their particular sporting prowess to a life of adventure, because of some event that befell them - maybe a medal winning runner’s hometown was sacked, and their swiftness allowed them to save forty children before the fires reached the school. Or maybe a record-breaking swimmer was the sole survivor of a flood that wiped out their people and now they have to get by on nothing but their wits and their abnormally massive deltoids. Obviously good stats relating to their sport. Class will depend on the sport too. You could get really creative with sports lauded amongst different races, eg. a dragonborn who was the world champion at distance fire-breathing.

(Based in a tumblr post) A bard whose main attack is Vicious Mockery. Super chaotic neutral, they focus on almost nothing else, just developing this one skill until they can practically just kill with a single insult. Their main driving motivation or goal is to eventually find a certain person - maybe a powerful and abusive parent figure or a hated tyrant, someone who did evil to them or their people - and just fucking obliterate them with the perfect, all-destroying insult, which they hope to have composed by the time they meet this person.

The youngest son of a king or ruler with like twelve children, so far from inheriting the throne nobody knew what to do with him and he ended up being tossed from institution to institution, being kicked out and kicked out until he joined the current party (or an institution the party are working with if he’s an NPC). He’s pretty dumb, with no education, essentially raised by castle servants and never learning a thing about politics. Probably a fighter. Low intelligence, good alignment. All is well, until, uh oh, all his twelve brothers die at once and he is suddenly expected to be king. What do? Help me, more intelligent party members!

Rural and suburban folk in the midwest and everywhere else have the same culture and values as their southern counterparts and are viewed with hatred and contempt by the urbanite hippies. It will be over quickly since you cant get food in the cities without shipping it in. They are also a powerful and vocal but tiny minority. Their pets will tear their progressive urban utopias apart. It won’t be a civil war. The cities will be anarchy, the south will be race war, and everybody in the cities will die. It’ll be over so quick it wouldn’t be fair to call it a war I think California or large parts of the Bay Area on down turn into Latino ethnic states. Depending what happens to the Chinese population in the Bay the Chicoms might actually push in to carve out a sphere of influence in SF. Texas and Florida turn into Hispanic/White semi-ethnostate states with token black populations. They deport all their Nogs to Miss, Lousinana, Alabama. The nogs will likely end with Mississippi as an ethnostate when they get pushed out of those ther states plus Georgia. That place will be where any blacks that don’t play ball under those new regimes will be deported to. The Northeast turns into a bloodbath for years, but the Great Plains and Pacific norwest come out fine. Thoughts?

Unlike the first civil war, the urban areas are now completely dependent upon rural areas to survive. We are also extremely infrastructure dependent. Remember when the first civil war happened before the electrical grid existed. It occurred before the significant supply of urban water came from wastewater plants and reclamation (requiring power and lots of chemical shipments).

The moment the infrastructure like highways and railways to the cities are destroyed or captured is the moment the urban areas begin to starve and riot. The urban areas will literally destroy themselves as the inhabitants panic just trying to survive (food, water, electricity will be gone quickly).

Which is what we want. A good anon should have mapped out key infrastructure near him that supports his area and the next urban area and have a plan of dealing with or securing it in SHTF.

Also know where your Nog areas are and think of natural ways to keep them bottled in.

Critical infrastructure like substations, power plants, aqueducts and pumping plants will be heavily defended as high priority assets. Many cities also have ports and will be able to receive goods and support from allies. They won't be completely isolated. Also a fair amount of inland cities will likely side with rural areas (middle america).

In a real SHTF hot civil war, law enforcement will be low priority. Infested areas will be rampant with gangs going full highwayman, hijacking citizens and raiding homes. It will be fucking ugly. You can't really bottle them in. Nog gangs would essentially be running their own micro insurgencies inside the overall conflict.

Both sides will have insider threats. Civil war is not simple. It's not pretty. It's not thou are on and who wins. And if you don't die, your way of life will be changed, likely for the rest of your life.

Imagine the small minority of sympathizers in your area poisoning your town's water supply. Imagine organized firestarting all around your town burning your house down and killing many of your friends and family. Its not going to be fun and clean. There are no pure divisions. Its not like everyone north of X state is the enemy, its more like X% of your local populace is now going to try to kill you and your family covertly.

Nobody could tell you accurately. It would take a concerted effort to revolt by a lot of people. Civil wars typically start in 2 ways: 

You usually see a shit-ton of the people in the streets protesting the government (which we don't). The whole resist trump marches and shit are not comprised of people who want a civil war, they are mostly comprised of people who just don't like the president and want someone else in office; they are not willing to sacrifice their lives in this effort.

Or

The country is invaded or some kind of governmental collapse causes a power vacuum.

In otherwords, we are not close to a civil war. We do see an extremely anemic threat of domestic terror from Antifa, but that can be almost instantly quelled. If the federal government designates them a terrorist organization, they will be completely fucked. Their loudest, most influential, and violent will be v& and shipped to Guantanamo so fast their heads will spin.

I’d say 10 years at least but no more than 20.

In the next ten years and after this census we are really going to start feeling some demographics realities. After the census a lot of interior red states are going to lose congressional seats and EC votes (the seats matter more) to Blue states- that’s what this influx has been about from the getgo. Remember the census counts everyone with a pulse for congressional representation NOT legal citizens so the next reapportionment secures a Democratic Congress for perpetuity.

The Republicans will NEVER take back the house. Within 16 years white demographics are not enough to hold an election. That’s when the real fun begins...

I wouldn't bet on it. As we stand now, the democratic party stands to be hoisted by their own petards. The acceptance rate of socialist policies by young americans is dangerously high, and this could stand to make the current cracks in the democrat party now to fracturing fissures in as little as 10 years. If a real fracture occurs and another party forms. the democrats essentially lose a large percent of their young to mid-30s voting base and republicans (if they hold their sails) will dominate them. Right now there is just too much up in the air to make a solid determination either way, just that we aren't close yet.

Except the socialist policies are more accepted by the younger non-white voting base and their numbers are rapidly rising. Furthermore Bernie has successfully managed to create a marriage of that socialism with “racial justice”. Effectively socialism gives the minorities their “equitable” share of American wealth.

The only non-whites that are not hip to this were already elites back home before fleeing socialism to come here. They’re already Republican and there’s simply are just not enough. The issue is the Democrats have tapped into the poorest classes in the hemisphere and have been importing them by the millions over the last decade. I know these people- they will vote to line their pockets. They are two layers deep into the Democratic Party- they get financial justice from socialism AND racial justice from wealth redistribution. 

Don’t discount the fact that the education system isn’t built to handle this influx either. These kids will grow up without skills and without an economy to participate in and they will be angry and they will coming to whites for their due.

I prophecy that a man will appear. A good man who loves his nation. (CIA CLOWN) He will tell us that minorities are to blame for dividing us. He will unite whites. Blacks will be given Florida because of trace sympathy about slavery. A wall will be built just south of Jacksonville, all the way across to the other side. Hispanics will be shipped en masse to their countries of origin. Jewish assets will be seized and they will be sent to Israel. The LGBT community will be identified as a health crisis that endangers everyone else with the threat of STD’s and they will be banned an shunned. Mental hospitals will be restored and they will be put in them where they all belong. Having been sickened with interventionism, the US will return to the old ways of war. Destroying nations that don’t behave and leaving them in ruins without giving aid or helping them rebuild thus reverting countries back to the Stone Age. A moratorium will be put on all immigration except from European countries and Australia. Except for Swedes. Because we don’t accept cucks.

But Blacks? Mestizo and Indian hispanics? The Democratic Party appeals to them at all aspects of their life from young to old. The post Great Society Democratic party is built upon a foundation of pandering to nonwhites and growing their numbers in order to solidify their power. It’s machine politics and they did it before with the Irish except what you have today are minorities that are too far away from being accepted into white society and supporting the current power structure. Castiza hispanics yes but Blacks and the rest- no. The majority of Blacks and low class hispanics will never accept white rule as a basic tenet of this society. 

No matter how hard the Trumpster tries to redefine the national main to include based people of all races it is too late and that line will not hold- the cat is already out of the bag and the non-based Blacks and hispanics want their gibs from Whitey.

Cities now have massive populations of leeches, criminals, and non combatants that would require enormous resources and manpower to keep in line. The major coastal cities could theoretically survive on foreign aid but I don't think they will be able to organize an army that can be used to project power into the rural areas, especially if they have tens of thousands of people tied down maintaining order and guarding infrastructure. The major coastal cities could survive on foreign aid for a long time and would be difficult to assault. Expect foreign combat troops to be deployed as well. Probably hundreds of thousands split between the coastal cities. Most of the liberal sides combat power will likely come from allied military formations.

Interior cities wont survive such a conflict. The interior of the country would be easy to secure but the most realistic chance of ending the war would be to capture the nuclear arsenal and use it to threaten the countries supplying the liberal side. Otherwise I don't see how such a war could be brought to an end.

Dispute-resolution is an extremely valuable skill in any society--so, unsurprisingly, you probably didn’t have a class on this in high school, or even college--definitely not in college.

To the contrary, schools are the root source of what’s created these oversized babies who’d rather call 9-1-1 than negotiate solutions, or mind their own damn business.

As one writer for FEE noted, the public education system is the crown jewel of an authoritarian “country.” You know a nation has finally perfected human enslavement when it subjects children to regimented indoctrination, behavioral programming, and forced brainwashing.

Indeed, every layer of the public school system is diabolically designed to turn the human spirit into a withered shell of what it once was and could be.

From requesting permission just to speak, to wearing dehumanizing uniforms that kill individuality, it’s hardly a surprise when fully grown children like Permit Patty go viral.

With a phone pressed to the side of their sanctimonious faces, this army of volunteer state minions get to feel like their local police--tyrannical psychopaths.

Self-funding a trip to Disneyland by selling water bottles on a sidewalk? How dare you teach your child about work ethic and entrepreneurship!

Having a casual barbeque with friends because why the hell not? Nope, can’t do that in Amerika.

A local 12-year old is running his own business this summer cutting lawns and cleaning up yards?

Quick, someone call the cops!

Enjoying a harmless water-gun fight in your neighborhood?

Think twice, criminal!

  Ironically, the so-called “peace officers” usually arrive on the scene to exacerbate the situation. The female officer in the above clip ends up falling flat on her face, prompting utter chaos that simply didn’t exist moments before. At least she fell before she had a chance to kill a dog.

What’s encouraging, still, is that these acts of intolerance often end up backfiring, like the boy whose lawn mowing business was boosted after the attention he received, or Permit Patty resigning from her company due to the social media backlash.

Perhaps if people were taught how to handle situations as adults---rather than summoning armed and dangerous state agents every time there’s a minor dispute---society would learn that self-governance trumps a gun to the head.

Oh well. While these self-righteous, nosy ass neighbors continue their never ending campaign to complain, soon, we’ll be transitioning into a freer future where the state is rendered obsolete.

By using non-governmental cryptocurrencies and forming ways for people to settle disputes and coexist peacefully, blockchain technology is enabling us to create a new world, where Permit Patty will have to settle for annoying and ruining the lives of just her close friends and family… while guzzling down her antidepressant meds and blaming “the patriarchy” for not getting laid, instead of the real culprit: Doritos.

In our stateless society, BBQ Becky won’t be able to call the local mafia to come extort and kidnap on her behalf… because there won’t be one. In fact, these pesky nuisances may inevitably have to be careful that their despicable actions don’t land their names on a Bitcoin assassination list.

If you want to live in a world with a busybody meddling on every corner, be my guest. The rest of us are building a friendlier, way more fun civilization based on mutual respect and individual rights… while taking the gun away from the Permit Pattys and BBQ Beckys of the world, without them even knowing what happened.

Gamelyn vs. Robin Hood

By A. E. Chandler The most famous English outlaw is Robin Hood, but he was by no means alone in the forest. Other outlaws, both fictional and real, can be traced throughout medieval England. Some of these outlaws influenced Robin Hood's legend, whilst others have faded from history. Gamelyn's story shares many similarities with Robin's; it's also its own kind of animal.

Gamelyn is the youngest son of a knight who bucks tradition and on his deathbed divides his land amongst his three sons, rather than giving all to the firstborn. Growing up as his eldest brother's ward, Gamelyn develops incredible physical strength, though he must stand by and watch as his lands go to waste. At last he gains control over his inheritance following an argument with his brother. Soon after, Gamelyn competes in and wins a wrestling match, inviting everyone at the fair to follow him home to celebrate at his brother's hall. When his brother bars the gate, Gamelyn is able to kick it in and break the defiant porter's neck with one blow, throwing the body down the courtyard well. The other servants, knowing Gamelyn to be a friend to themselves and his tenants, don't try to resist his wishes. The guests feast for seven days and nights, at the end of which Gamelyn's brother manages to chain him up in the hall. The brother holds a feast for some wealthy churchmen, all of whom refuse to help Gamelyn. Instead he is freed by a servant named Adam the Spencer, and the two beat everyone with staffs, breaking the brother's back and placing him in Gamelyn's chains. The sheriff gets involved and, after initially driving him off, Gamelyn and Adam flee to the woods where they meet the King of the Outlaws and his seven-score men. The brother heals, becoming the new sheriff. Gamelyn's lands are confiscated, and he becomes King of the Outlaws when the former man is pardoned. At the shire court, Gamelyn is imprisoned, but his middle brother Ote comes and bails him out. Gamelyn returns to the forest, stealing from passing churchmen. On the day of the assize, the eldest brother declares that Ote will hang, as Gamelyn has not fulfilled his court date. Gamelyn then makes a dramatic entrance, freeing Ote and placing the corrupt sheriff, justice, and jury on trial, hanging them all. The King pardons Ote, Gamelyn, and all the outlaws, making Gamelyn Chief Justice of the Forest. The historical note at the end of my novel, The Scarlet Forest: A Tale of Robin Hood, borrows from my academic research when it discusses why we can date the existence of Robin Hood's legend to the early to mid thirteenth century, whilst the first written stories we have of him come from the fifteenth century. Gamelyn's story was composed in the mid fourteenth century, in between Robin's origin and his first known extant written tales. From the dialect used, Knight and Ohlgren have speculated that Gamelyn's story was likely written in Leicestershire, or perhaps Lincolnshire, both of which are near Robin Hood's territory of Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, and both of which have connections to Robin's legend. The Tale of Gamelyn is found in twenty-five early manuscripts, whereas four of the five medieval tales we have of Robin Hood survive in only one. (The fifth, A Gest of Robyn Hode, survives in five fragmented copies, and these are all printed, rather than handwritten. No handwritten copy of Gest is known to exist.) Gamelyn owes this larger number to a vague association with Geoffrey Chaucer, suspected by some of intending to include a version of Gamelyn in The Canterbury Tales. As a side note, William Shakespeare later wrote the play As You Like It based on Thomas Lodge's 1590 Rosalynde, which was in turn based on Gamelyn.

Some of the similarities between Gamelyn's story and Robin's are due to their shared genre of medieval outlaw literature, whilst some are due to one story influencing the other. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to tell which way the influence flowed, due to the scarcity of source material. One instance where we do know that it was Gamelyn's story affecting Robin's comes from the modern period. J. C. Holt, the leading expert on Robin Hood, has argued that Gamelyn is the inspiration for the character of Gamwell, who was added to early modern rhymes of Robin Hood. Gamwell merged with Will Scarlet, creating a relative of Robin's who is on the run from the law after killing his father's disrespectful steward with an overzealous blow to the head. The medieval Gamelyn's vaunted strength, and the emphasis placed on his high-born familial ties seem to have been incorporated into Robin Hood's legend in the person of Will Gamwell. The early modern Robin Hood is closer to Gamelyn than the medieval Robin Hood, though whether this is due to direct influence by Gamelyn is up for debate. As Maurice Keen notes, Gamelyn is loved by the lower classes in his Tale - his tenants, servants, the spectators at the fair, the outlaws - and he in turn consistently earns this love. The medieval Robin Hood is more nuanced; when it comes to the lower classes he has allies, such as the uncle of Much the Miller's son, as well as opponents (such as the potter, and fellow-outlaw Guy of Gisborne). In Gest when the people of Nottingham see Robin leading his band toward the city they try to flee, even old women on crutches, convinced they will all be massacred. The more universal love from the peasantry that Robin experiences in post-medieval tales comes after the idea of robbing the rich to feed the poor was introduced to his legend in the sixteenth century. The sixteenth century also saw Robin elevated to become the Earl of Huntingdon, which inevitably made him a landlord, like Gamelyn, with an automatic obligation of good lordship toward his peasants. The medieval Robin Hood is not a nobleman but himself a peasant, though anyone calling him that likely would receive a punch in the face, as he is a type of high-ranking peasant called a yeoman, and takes every opportunity to remind his audience of his status. The medieval Robin is fiercely proud to be a yeoman, and is just as disinclined toward raising his social status as he is toward lowering it. Gamelyn is constantly struggling to affirm his status, whereas Robin's is always secure. As the son of a knight and as a landlord, Gamelyn's station is much above the medieval Robin's, and so the social issues dealt with in his tale are different.

Gamelyn and the medieval Robin Hood legend do, however, share much in common. One example lies in both Robin and Gamelyn rebelling against corruption, to fight for the preservation of the established social order. Gamelyn hits its audience (and not infrequently its characters) over the head with this theme, whilst in Robin's tales it is used with greater skill. Gamelyn and his eldest brother are stuffed into the roles of outlaw king and sheriff respectively halfway through their story. At its climax, Gamelyn turns the officials of justice into the defendants at their own biased trial, convicting and hanging them as they had already intended to do to him. Robin Hood behaves like a corrupt forester, overzealously enforcing forest law where it should not exist. At the same time, he shows himself to be "the criminal who upholds justice better than the Sheriff . . . the robber who can be more generous than the gentry . . . the excommunicant who shows more devotion than the clergy . . . preserv[ing] what they claim to love by being [his] own hypocrite" as his wife tells him in The Scarlet Forest: A Tale of Robin Hood. In a similar vein, when Gamelyn is faced with cold-hearted clergymen, he simply attacks them at the first opportunity; the medieval Robin Hood is known to rob monks, but he is also extremely devout, especially with regard to the Virgin Mary, and is often shown praying and attending mass. He even (with disastrous results as it turns out) entrusts his life to a nun. Whilst Gamelyn's character is simplistic, the medieval Robin Hood's is more complex. Perhaps this is why The Tale of Gamelyn is concluded to be fictional, whilst the truth about Robin's tales is still up for debate.

Process Models for Data Mining

Part I: Data Mining Processes

What are the major data mining processes?

Data mining is the step in the knowledge discovery process in which data patterns are extracted using intelligent methods. Data is mined to assess frequent patterns, correlations, and associations. Frequent item-set and market basket analysis is a common data mining method that allows companies to assess which items their customers likely will purchase together. This knowledge not only helps with forecasting but also provides marketing insight surrounding consumer behavior, promotional strategies, and item placement. One of the main portions of data mining is presenting the data in intelligent, visual, and possibly interactive formats that allow for easy recognition and absorption of key information.

Before data can be mined it must be cleaned up. Data in the real world is often dirty and inconsistent, life is too messy to nicely fit into a spreadsheet at once. Multiple sources of data must often be integrated to have all of the information needed. However, once all of these data sources are pulled together, you do not really need all of it, just portions from each source. The data that is needed for the respective task is then selected. This sample of data is then transformed and consolidated so it is functional to be mined. The data is now ready for discovery. The business goals and objectives as well as the data, its sources, and its purposes must be fully understood so the mining phases are clearly defined and measurable. Mining models, that classify and predict using algorithms, are then built to meet the business needs through the data set. These models are then evaluated, tested, and deployed. New data is always coming into the picture and new patterns are always emerging, so this is a very circuitous process.

Why do you think the early phases (understanding of the business and understanding of the data) take the longest in data mining projects?

As Mike Gualtieri (2013) of Forrester states, coming into an organization and trying to understand the hundreds, thousands, and even millions of tables, objects, sources, and servers could take months. It is pertinent one has a firm grasp on all of these items, how they flow in and out, and how they interact. Bringing in a data scientist to run algorithms for predictive and prescriptive statistics should be done with the pairing of an internal individual who has the firm grasp of the business and data. The person who understands all of the data at an enterprise level and its interactions down to the end user does not have the skill set generally to run all of the advanced analysis and if they do, they do not have the time. Both tasks are so time consuming and ever changing there should be a SME at both ends.

If the business is not understood then the data has no meaning, without an understanding of the data there is no means to address business concerns, goals, objectives, successes or failures. To properly assess the full scope of an organization models must be built, evaluated, and deployed on a level that fully understands the business and data. It would be horrendous to build a plethora of models, test, and deploy these models only to realize two data sources were left out that completely change the whole picture. Which then skews all other data. Further, it would be devastating to build models that answer questions that seem apparent but aren’t fully what the key decision makers need out of the data. At that point, it doesn’t matter how great your models are, if the questions aren’t being answered that are needed or patterns are being ignored because they do not seem relevant to unknown business goals.

List and briefly define the phases in the CRISP-DM process.

The first step in the CRISP data mining process is grasping a firm understanding of the business, its goals, and its performance measures. Prior strategies, current resources, and previous failed objectives must all be assessed to gain a holistic understanding of the organization.

It is pertinent one understands the current state of data management as well as where key players idealize their data. The existing data and its relationships must be collected and assessed. This can further business understanding, which can trigger new data and business relationships in a cyclic manner.

Although business understanding may be the most critical portion of the process, data preparation tends to be the most time consuming. Data has to be cleaned, multiple sources of data must be integrated, the data size should be reduced to only cover the scope of the project, finally the data must be transformed for intelligible access.

Models are strategically devised to achieve project objects. These models are algorithms created to classify, predict, and perform various other analytic functions. These models are then reviewed, the best model is determined, and strategy for testing is put into place. Deployment ensues and a continuous cycle of new data is always incorporated. (Hunter, 2009).

What are the main data preprocessing steps? Briefly describe each step and provide relevant examples.

Data has to first be cleaned up. Missing values are filled in. Binning, regression, and outlier analysis is then completed to clean up any ‘noise’, errors in variance, in the data. Integration of data begins with matching objects and schemas, eliminating redundancies and finding correlations, and solving any conflicts with data communications. Generally, entire data sets are too cumbersome to analyze, so a sample of data is taken from a reduced data set. This consists of compression, defining principles components of data, determining appropriate attribute subsets, and clustering. Data is then transformed. New attributes are created, data is normalized, aggregated, labeled, and formed into a conceptual hierarchy.

How does CRISP-DM differ from SEMMA?

SEMMA and CRISP-DM are superficially parallel. Sample relative to Selection, Explore to Pre-Processing, Modify to Transformation, Model identifies to DM, Assess similar to interpretation/evaluation. In my understanding SEMMA (Sample, Explore, Modify, Model, Assess) is the SAS process that was implemented to complete the knowledge discovery process. CRISP-DM, has the same intent, it has just been refined and is now the industry standard. This most likely lies in the fact that CRISP-DM begins with business and data understanding before considering data preparation. SEMMA begins at the sample, therefore, quite a bit of work must be standardized prior to being able to obtain a reliable sample of the data (Azevedo & Santos, 2008)..

Part II: Data Mining Methods & Techniques

Identify at least three of the main data mining methods.

The Apriori algorithm is used to mine frequent itemsets for Boolean association rules. Hashing, transaction reduction, partitioning data, and samples are used to reduce data for use in this method.

The Frequent Pattern Growth Approach also mines frequent itemsets but it constructs an extremely compressed transaction database and focuses on fragment growth.

Vertical Data Format (Eclat) transforms data sets of transactions into vertical and horizontal rows. The Apriori algorithm is then used to find significant intersections in the data.

Give examples of situations in which classification would be an appropriate data mining technique.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has scoring guidelines based upon standardized testing that classifies individuals to determine the probability of them becoming a re-offender.

Give examples of situations in which regression would be an appropriate data mining technique.

Regression is used to help fill in missing values and reduce data sets during data cleansing (Berson, 2012). Regression can also be used to answer numerous predictive questions as well as for monitoring and forecasting. (Major, 2013).

What stock level will be left at the end of the month?

List and briefly define at least two classification techniques.

Decision Tree Classifiers are flow-chart like structures showing test attributes, class labels, and the outcome of the test. This method is very popular as it requires no domain knowledge or parameter setting, it can accommodate multi-dimensional data, it is very intuitive, and carries high accuracy rates.

Bayesian Classifiers use statistics to predict class membership probabilities. Naïve Bayesian classifiers are high in accuracy and speed and comparable to decision trees.

Generalized Linear Model (GML) is another popular statistical technique that Oracle uses for binary classification and regression. This model supports coefficient statistics and confidence boundaries. Oracle further utilizes Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm for binary and multiclass classification (Oracle, 2017).

Rule based classifers generally focus on conflict resolution for IF-THEN functions. This is often done through size ordering, rule-based ordering, default rules, class based ordering, or a decision list.
