New and Confused Homeschool Families Start Here! Talk about user-friendly. This channel is the perfect go-to site, especially for new homeschooling families.

The presenter, Erica, is well-informed and speaks with the benefit of first hand experience. She also podcasts, blogs, and vlogs (or something like that 😃) so you can consume her content in various ways.

ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: It's a GO for Me.

These videos are clean! The recording and formatting is so well done. And getting insight from someone who's actually DOING what you're doing ... well, well, well ... you gotta love it when a great plan comes together.

CRASH COURSE

Crash Course is a YouTube channel filled with science, social science, and historical content presented in fun, usually a mix of real people and animated clips.

Agreeing that the site is witty and fast-paced, CommonSense.org and other commenters are seemingly thrown off by the word 'course' in the channels moniker. CommonSense.org gives Crash Course a rating of 3 out 5 stars, deciding that anything labeled a "course" should be interactive and offer opportunities for students to "engage" with the content - something they claim Crash Course does not necessarily do.

ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: Check it out. 👍🏾

Sometimes a video is just that ... a video. And most homeschooling or traditional school teachers will add their own spin on information curated from the internet regardless. The content is better suited toward older learners and families should preview the content first to ensure that all topic matter is copacetic.

THE HANDMADE HOMESCHOOLER

With shoutouts to the "Homeschool Haters" (facts 😉) and videos titled THINGS I WON'T DO AS A HOMESCHOOL MOM and 6 THINGS I DON'T DO AS A HOMESCHOOL MOM, you know you are about to get the real-deal-truth-ruth when it comes to homeschooling. Mandy's channel -THE HANDMADE HOMESCHOOLER- is truly an internet fav. Plus, she runs a free Facebook Group and, even though I, personally, don't rock with a whole bunch of extraneous and miscellaneous purchases and fees related to homeschooling, if you need some early guidance, this channel has curriculum and other resources for preschool and upper grades at the ready.

ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: Yes, Please! 💯

Besides the cute, little YouTube Shorts she does, as a classroom teacher, I REALLY appreciate The Handmade Homeschooler's approach to HS prep and organization. She seems to backwards plan and Year-At-A-Glance prep like the most veteran of school teachers. Her content is interesting and informative. And definitely the place to go for real talk, organization, preparation, and subject based ideas and information.

ART FOR KIDS HUB

Art for Kids Hub is a great look for all homeschooling families because:

The channel is actually created and hosted by an actual family. With kids. Doing art.

Most of the projects are easy, uncomplicated, and do not require a bunch of supplies or skills. In most cases, pencils and perhaps crayons or markers will suffice.

My boy loves this channel for all of the cool HOW TO DRAW ... videos that provide easy to understand, step-by-step techniques for drawing everything from ants to a slice of lemon pie.

ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: For sure! For sure! 👌🏾

While some of the drawing tutorials or subject matter (Bugatti anyone?) may frustrated younger or easily frustrated children, pre-viewing and pre-selecting a drawing or two you know your homeschooler can handle is the perfect addition to your Art or Creativity curriculum. For sure!

Real Life Lore

What's cool about the Real Life Lore YouTube channel is, by far, the ... LORE! Featuring titles such as What's the Deepest Hole We Can Possible Dig? This channel is chock full of subject matter based topics that are arranged in way that makes what could be somewhat dry content (digging holes ... huh?) really engaging for elementary aged homeschoolers and up. Filled with science and history/social studies heavy themes, from comprehension questions, essays, drawings, map quests, experiments, and more, your learner can successfully interact with this content in so many ways and have fun doing it.

On Behalf of Your Children ... What's Next?

For some of you, this is going to hurt. And for that I am sorry. But not sorry. More like sorry, not sorry. Especially in this age of wokeness, cancellations, and fear of speaking truth, to power or otherwise.

You see, these days, most can't handle the truth and believe their self-imposed fugue state is valid, is justified, and no one is allowed to penetrate it.

But penetrate it I must.

Hear me out for just a moment as I present a single question to the confused, the uncertain, the unsure among us.

What's next?

I see your questions. Your inquires. Your requests for assistance.

Which leads me to wonder. What's next?

You recant the stories of the awful things that occur in your child's classroom, their school building, within themselves, or amongst their peers.

You lament over the inequalities, the maltreatment, the mishandling effectuated by your child's teacher, their school environment, and society at large as they showcase their uncertainty about things that they simply do not understand.

You use words like heartbreaking, brutal, unfair. And as I read, as I listen, I can only ask but one question. What's next?

Our neurodivergent children, Our loves. The reason our hearts beat. Our children's behaviors can be intense. Their behaviors can be difficult. No. Not just difficult. Not only intense. Also complicated. Frightening. A lot.

All facts.

But I wonder, even more so when reading your words, or listening to your commentary here and there ... what is the alternative, and is that alternative any worse than your prevailing predicament?

Speaking from direct and actual experience, I assure you, your children are telling you something. The stories they tell you. The feelings they express. The pictures that they draw. Even the reports and write-ups from school. They are all painting a narrative. Telling a story.

So again I ask, what's next?

Auliq Ice speaks of pulling your own rope. But pulling your own rope is sometimes so hard. Pulling your own rope is sometimes too much. Rest assured. I get it. I, too, understand.

But what is the alternative? What is next?

Perhaps homeschooling is not your choice. (Though I wish you would reconsider.) But options exist. Alternatives abound. And most importantly, your children are asking a very hard question of you.

What's next?

Because what's currently happening is obviously not working.

So consider this, and again on behalf of your children I ask, ... what's next?

HOMESCHOOLING VERSUS TRADITIONAL SCHOOLING: Part One

Homeschooling is beneficial and appropriate for many families and is a decision that should be made on an individual basis.

Yet, for whatever reason, with some in the traditional school community, the question of homeschool VERSUS traditional school continuously seems to rear its unwelcome little head.

Here, then, is where I find it appropriate to note that if you've had a successful traditional [public/private] school experience and subsequently came out of that experience not only well-rounded and well-educated but also appropriately socialized [no bullying, plenty of substantial friendships that enhanced both your life and your wellbeing], and full of not only book knowledge and suitable life skills, but also beneficial social and emotional learning - Congratulations. Now go forth and conquer because You Certainly Did That! Traditional School was (obviously) the proper educational solution for you and your family. High-Five! 🖐🏾

Only with some in the traditional school community does the question of homeschool VERSUS traditional school ever seem to rear its unwelcome little head.

But here is where you must also recognize that just as the decisions for your family are your business, so too are the decisions of families who choose to pursue educational solutions that perhaps differ from yours. In a nutshell, it should be understood, that while the choice to homeschool is someone's business it just so happens that that business is not yours.

Homeschooling is regulated in every state. In some states, homeschooled families are regulated and observed far more than teachers in traditional school classrooms. (Ask me how I know). And this overused, recycled list of so-called relevant "homeschool-centric issues" are not now nor have they ever been exclusive only to homeschooling.

Appropriate Socialization?

I wonder if the boy whom nobody ever plays with agrees that all public school socialization is correct and appropriate?

Meaningful Friendships and Relationships?

Let's consider if the teenage girl who cries every night and is beginning to make unwise social decisions because she feels that she can never match up to the "cool" girls believes this to be so.

Mandatory Reporting? Overlooked Abuse?

The child who STILL gets smacked around every night, covers the bruises with a sweatshirt (that no teacher ever asks about) every day, and practically starves every weekend begs to differ.

Relevant Curriculum and Teaching?

Check the Yelp or Google listings of many traditional (particularly public) schools or sift your way through the Facebook posts filled with distressed parents and guardians uncomfortable not only with what their children are being taught but also dissatisfied with the experience level or attitudes of the teachers interacting with their children on a daily basis for proof of the fallacy inherent in this "all teachers are good teachers" misnomer.

On this issue then, it is important that we all, on both sides, are explicitly clear. When it comes to the education of children, this isn't some type of cage match. It's a personal decision, individualistic to each family and the child they are tasked to raise and protect.

And as it relates to the question of homeschool or traditional school then, I'd advise that those with alternative opinions (on either side) quit attempting to argue the issue with each other and, instead, go argue this topic with their therapist or their mother. Respectfully.

It's like with autism

watching every themlet anime fan selfdiagnose because they really like a certain show or game and its their "autistic hyperfixation" or flapping their hands "uwu stimminnggg"

meanwhile i hit myself in the head when i get overwhelmed, get stares in public for sounding and acting like the whole circus couldn't finish school cause it got me bullied and i started biting and can't even make proper friends online cause i'm just maladjusted and spergy 🤡 like man i got a caretaker that comes over twice a week to take me to appointments, i cant work because i will randomly throw caveman-tier rage tantrums that can be triggered by literaly nothing and have to live with my mom at almost 30 cause i cant on my own...

I'm not even in charge of my own early-retirement money cause the gov doesn't trust me to make wise financial decisions.

I can't eat majority of foods because the texture makes me gag and chewing in general is something i hate i can't be taken anywhere because of the ragefits i cant controll.

And im STILL highfunctioning.

I hate hate HATE how bored kids and narc adults will just selfdiagnose themselves with this fuckin hell curse and spread shitty videos of them handflapping and going "squeee kyaaa beep boop hehe" like its something cute and endearing.

Especially as a woman this shit is HELL cause i just am not able in any way shape or form to behave or look how society sees acceptable of me.

I'm not able to be quiet polite and meek, i am not able to just silently endure situations i don't like and i'm not able to wear makeup cause the oily film on my skin drives me insane and i compulsively pick at my face anyway and stubble makes me scratch myself bloody from discomfort so shaving isnt on the table either (not to mention i cant be trusted with razors due to a history of hurting myself) it is NOT CUTE or endearing or charming and it does NOT make you act like youre 5 or an anime girl i am boilinnnggg with rage

I was tagged by the absolutely wonderful @excited-insomniac - thank you darling! I haven't done one of those in a while since brain refused to cooperate, but this one is going to be quick, since I have literally published a grand total of six fics lmao

The Knight of the Cart Comedic Retelling - the greatest thing I've ever written, merely because I had so much fun while writing it and banged this out in less than a month, which for me, is a lot. Arthuriana, 17k. Parody of Chrétien de Troyes' Lancelot the Knight of the Cart, written because I was trying to explain it to a friend and couldn't keep it short. No knowledge of the original is needed. Fun and light stuff, which is apparently my brand.

Toad Days - once again in the fun and cracky domain. BBC Merlin, Gen, 4k. Merlin accidentally transforms Arthur into a toad, and chaos ensues. It's the first fanfiction I've ever published, and I will forever be happy that the honour went to this one.

----ing Wizards - yep, still funny stuff. BBC Merlin, Gen, 900 words. Based on a Terry Pratchett quote. Arthur and Gwaine drunkenly come to terms with Merlin having magic. Written in mere hours while possessed by a writing demon. The friend who gave me the idea told me I managed to do Terry Pratchett justice, which is probably the greatest compliment I've ever received on my writing.

Love Languages - finally departing from the crack. BBC Merlin, Mergwenthur, 5k, still a WIP - but since it's a series of vignettes, can be read on its own. 5+1 mornings in a parallel season 5 where nothing changes except for Mergwenthur - until something actually does change in the end, of course. I think it has some of my best writing to date.

The Seduction of Merlin of Ealdor - this is just pure pwp. BBC Merlin, Merwainlot, 5.5k. I just love the chaos trio, and Dom!Lancelot, and I was absolutely delighted that a friend gave me the excuse to combine the two and write this. Writing porn proved to be incredibly hard, especially as an ace person, and I'm really proud of the result.
