Takasugi really feels like the embodiment of a character who's literally the enemy of the entire narrative... The narrative painted him as Gintoki's archenemy who rightfully harbours anger and hatred for him for his actions in the past and turning a blind eye, but it turns out Takasugi was actually angry at himself and couldn't stand seeing Gintoki cry.
There's how Gintoki and Hijikata have strongly contrasting designs and compatible personalities, as if hinting at how their dynamic would likely have a strong role in the overall narrative... And Takasugi was just the toxic yaoi ex who Hijikata was meant to replace. Only for Takasugi to entirely take Hijikata out of the picture and leave Hijikata pathetically tailing the two of them in Silver Soul arc.
And if Takagin really is romantically implied... You can interpret "wait for me in hell" as Takasugi getting Gintoki to promise that the only person he would belong to and go home to is Takasugi alone. Tsukuyo had commented that Gintoki is the type who can't belong to one place and it's why there is no romance in the story - and Takasugi destroyed that.
Takasugi destroyed all the allegations and tropes against him that were established at the very start. The way this iconic line is unironically true... Takasugi is the troll to Gintama that trolls everyone. Takasugi is the enemy of the entire Gintama universe.
He's so terrible he won't even make his character clear to the audience... Best boy BTW.

Gintama x Trigun
This post is obviously not intended as a direct comparison of characters, but rather on character design and how much Trigun influenced my later love for Gintama. I became a fan of Trigun in 2003 when the manga first came to North America, and I later watched the original anime series. Three years later, I became a fan of Gintama, and even then I noticed the similarities and how much I gravitated toward the same types of characters and designs. Sakamoto and Vash wear red coats, wield guns, and are generally eccentric; Hijikata and Wolfwood dress in black and smoke cigarettes; and Takasugi and Legato share similar hairstyles and function as antagonists.
I love both of these series so much, and I’m happy to see new Trigun fans experiencing the series for the first time through 2023′s Trigun Stampede. Likewise, I’m also happy if people become fans of Gintama, as well. Both are great series! For those that adore both as I do, this post is more a celebration of the two series and a few of their iconic characters.

Koibaku Character Impressions
Aaand of course my translator starts glitching the second I get to Naosuke in the prologue >.>
Anyway, my first impressions of everyone so far (please forgive inaccuracies since I use a translator to play).
SAITO
Straight-laced former-Shinsengumi current-Tokyo-police-dude(?) with an understated gentleness to him. Of all the Ikeseries posterboys that I'm familiar with he reminds me of Napoleon and Ray the most. He's heccin easy on the eyes, but nothing else has really captured my interest so far.
KIDO
Kind, easy-going, progressive-thinking (feminist icon) and gentlemanly. He's basically the advisor to the Emperor(?). All the characters on the Meiji Government side seem to answer to him. He reminds me of Comte and Victor!
MORI
Not a romanceable suitor (yet?) but he has a sprite and he's a quirky military doctor. He's very playful and inviting and hospitable (he literally invites Rin, the MC, to come stay with him while she stays in Tokyo and tries to get her memory back). He reminds me of Gilbert if Gilbert hadn't joined the dark side. Also I think he robbed Mousse in a dark alley and stole his outfit.
KATSU
I don't know how I feel about him. He's one of the characters who is the most openly distrustful of Rin. He's also the only one so far who's made a pass at her, joking or otherwise. So I'd say he reminds me of Nokto. He was against Kido hiring a female, but he might have a more nuanced reason for it besides it being the prevailing attitude in that era. And he did quickly accept the decision without a fuss, but it seemed more because Kido is such a high-ranking official. Katsu leads the navy.
SAIGO
Charismatic general. He's really just so very charming and easy to talk to. And that reminds me of Jin and Leon and Masa. I don't really have a lot else to say about him. He's very good at keeping his guard-dog at bay XD
TOSHIAKI
Angry pomeranian general. He tiny, he bark, he probably bite. He literally has a little fangy sticking out of his mouth. He's SOOO overprotective about Saigo. He. Is. ADORABLE. Reminds me of Hideyoshi in terms of "my lord can do no wrong and I would die for him" vibes. Yves too! And though I don't know a whole lot about Kanetsugu, I think the guard dog bit might be similar to him?
ENOMOTO
My dude is a prisoner!? Only because he was on the losing side of the Boshin War. But he has his own little research room at the prison and gets so caught up in his research that he forgets to eat for DAYS at a time. Without showing any exhaustion. He's got radiant vibes. I think I might love him. I don't know. Mitsunari? I don't know. Dazai minus his rainy vibes?? ;;
HIJIKATA
Alluring. Somehow elusive. Leaves an almost ghostly impression in the brief encounter Rin has with him. AND HE'S GOT INHUMANLY COLD HANDS SO LET ME JUST PREPARE MY TEARS. I think he's definitely for the Leonardo-enjoyers. And Galileo-voice-enjoyers :)
NAOSUKE
I don't know because my stupid translator decided to glitch just as I got to him :( But he's mysterious. Seems to huff a quiet, knowing, malicious laugh instead of giving a straight answer. Will update after I play the last bit of the prologue.
edit: finished the prologue. HECCIN Shakespeare vibes. He only says as much as he needs to and leaves the rest to his mysterious and unsettling aura. During Rin's encounter with him he helps her back to government HQ when she gets lost, but ofc it's weird that he even knew where she was going in the first place hehe :)
???
WHO IS HE?? Foreigner dude that Rin only sees in passing. 0 interaction in the prologue. And he's not romanceable afaik

HIJIKATA PROPAGANDA TIME BECAUSE MY MAN IS TOO POWERFUL AND SEXY TO BE BEATEN IN THE FIRST ROUND BY A RWBY CHARACTER
1. He was the former Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi, which were basically a bunch of BADASS Samurai.
2. In real life, he died in 1869 during the Battle of Hakodate, BUT in the anime he lived and was imprisoned as a prisoner of war. Man did NOT want to die.
3. He escaped prison in the most badass way possible. He was in a prison transfer with a bunch of other prisoners when he coordinated an escape with all of the prisoners and absolutely SLAUGHTERED the prison guards.
4. He has so much sexy swagger energy that people go doggy eyes and literally would DIE just so he could live.
5. old man yaoi. (his best friend, Nagakura Shinpachi, has always been by his side ever since they were boys, and Nagakura has always supported him no matter what)
6. please vote for him. he didnt fight against the entire new Meiji Government just to be obliterated by a RWBY character.
He does sound quite sexy and powerful, but also to be fair, she is a really iconic RWBY character
(in the future please try to not bring down the other characters or sources in your propaganda)

thinking about it. otsuu arc finale is weird. tosshi (established as being an actual part of hijikata, not completely constructed from muramasha) talking about wanting to completely lose himself in one task, fight with everything he had alongside his friends. which makes sense except for the fact that it doesnt really make sense. because (1) we already KNOW that hijikata does these things. as seen from his "keep working at it until you pass out/are physically unable to continue" approach (yagyuu arc). unless its more about the "fighting alongside friends" which WOULD make sense in the context of this being a followup to shinsengumi crisis arc or even as a development from mitsuba arc (he seeks out help rather than trying to push people away for the sake of protecting them) except that part isnt actually focused on (kondou and gintoki both yell at them to keep fighting until the end for the sake of...). unless its more about the "it doesnt matter if you win or lose" thing that kondou yells except (1). so maybe its about letting go of his shame and fully giving it his all WHILE being a boke/being a loser. EXCEPT in the end he doesnt lose (tosshi dies) AND he doesnt actually let go of his shame (remains primarily a tsukkomi character afterwards, literally acts embarrassed about the events of the arc in timeskip arc)
