Hilltribe Round 6: Marhijo Temple

I noticed that there is exactly one household left in Round 6 of my Nordic neighborhood, so I’ll finally post it!

On an empty bit of land was, officially, the temple to the horse goddess Marhijo. It wasn’t much to look at, barely more than a few sticks in the ground, but self-appointed Priest Neede was doing his best.

Couldn’t be a temple to a horse goddess without a horse! Neede found her in a local market, being sold for more than he could afford, which was one of the reasons the temple was a few sticks in the ground. Nobody was completely convinced that he did pay for her at all, but nobody came forward to accuse him of anything.

To Neede’s great joy and pride, her presence did seem to attract the wild horses living on Harduz, with predictable results soon following.

I've been wondering something and maybe you have an insight into this since you're currently living in Thailand: How aware are Thai people of certain issues around the world? How exposed are they to them? Or how aware are they of certain American actors being "problematic"? I ask because I sometimes see takes where people from western countries (mostly the US) criticise Thai actors or shows for something that I frankly wonder if the actors/show creators in question are even aware of. Speaking as someone from the west but not an English-speaking country, if I wasn't constantly online (and online in THESE specific tumblr spaces), I wouldn't be aware American/British actor X, Y or Z is problematic, or aware of certain issues in America, the UK, etc. But I don’t know what the situation is like in Thailand, so I thought maybe you have a better idea of it.

so that's a really good question that I've thought about for many years, and here's my personal take on it: while young thai people are very aware of the world around them through social media, I often think people don't look at cultural differences when criticizing an actor's behavior. one of the most obvious examples would be the difference between trans women in the west & ladyboys in thailand, which, yes, for the most part, are the same thing, but culturally ladyboys have been seen more as a third gender in thailand, and that for literal centuries. what I mean to say is that as aware about certain things as younger thai people are, they're still a result of their own culture, and often judging certain words or behaviors from other countries through a western lense is problematic. it reminds me of when people said tay was doing cultural appropriation for wearing a headwear of a traditional hilltribe FROM THAILAND, but people saw something that resembled native american headwear & ran with it. so in my opinion, a lot of actors aren't even aware that people are mad at them for certain things, for example when people were trying to cancel off for being allegedly "transphobic", that was all inter fans. not one thai fan batted an eye about it, bc they actually have the cultural context that goes with it. in general I would really advocate for more nuance in these types of discourse, bc leftist spaces online are great & all but also tend to lack nuance & really become dogpiling at the snap of a finger. if an actor can't even read english that well, how do you expect them to be woke to western issues that have been primarily discussed online in english? the thing is you can't. so in general younger thai people know about all the things like cultural appropriation, transphobia, etc. but when it comes to more specific issues of particular celebrities being cancelled for x y or z, I don't think most of them know at all.

Il y a des jours avec, et des jours sans. Aujourd'hui, ce sera un jour sans Annette (pas parceque j'étais malade hein, juste pas sur les photos 😘)

Au grand désarroi de nos augustes seants, ayant passé la JOURNÉE dans les transports, il y a malheureusement bien peu de choses à raconter sur cette journée.

Nous arrivons à Chiang Rai où ils apprécient manifestement le street art : (ce sont des costumes traditionnels des hilltribes, notamment la dernière femme qui montre une coiffe couverte de billes et plaques en argent, ironiquement dans une des tribus les plus pauvres)

Pour remplir nos estomacs affamés, nous découvrons la fondue thaïlandaise ! Ayant décidé de faire un oeuf poché (magnifiquement exécuté par le Dr Rathatton), nous découvrirons ce soir si les contaminations à la salmonelle sont d'actualité dans cette ville. Suspense.

Petit détour par l'horloge de la ville, qui nous fait un petit spectacle son et lumière de 5 minutes (d'accord, c'est pas la parade de Noël de Disney, mais c'est meugnon)

Et nous rentrons finalement à l'hôtel (un vrai hôtel !! Avec une chambre privée ! Et une douche juste pour nous !!), Tout en louant au gré des branches dans le nez le travail extraordinaire des élagueurs de la ville. Vous noterez le talent photographique incroyable dont l'artiste fait preuve.

With the temple not even being a little hut yet, and in fact, basically being an interesting stone in the landscape, Neede nevertheless decided that he wanted to invite people to a little gathering, just like the other High Priests so frequently did.

Something about the atmosphere at the temple-to-be, however, made the guests behave a little strange. For no proper reason, Dany, wife of the harbormaster Zip, decided to make out with farmer Erknabalthaz.

Harmony, priestess of Gardan, was entirely unimpressed by such frivolous experimentation.

For whatever reason, Dany was quite unhappy with the party, while Erknabalthaz complained that it was nice enough.

While Neede visited the graveyard (to head into the catacombs and pay his respects to the dead chief), the burial grounds bore witness to more inappropriate, adulterous flirting, with Erknabalthaz giving his sister-in-law more attention than he should, and his red-headed wife Aisa doing the same to her ex-fiancé’s brother.

(And finally, Round 6 is over! Round 7 has been in the works for a while, but I’m still trying to catch up with the Greeks, so it’ll be a while until I start posting that.)
