"If Shuichi were an animal he'd be a cat" "If Shuichi were an animal he'd be a nervous puppy" you fools. You utter buffoons. This is a detective who has canonically climbed mountains and swum up rivers to look for a pet alligator. You think that sounds like a cat? You think that sounds like a shaking puppy? No. He digs through the trash like all other private investigators. He runs around in the wilderness for cases without fear. He's a smart lil' bugger but would probably accidentally get hit by a car somehow (especially given how bad he is at driving in his Psyche Taxi minigame).
This man is a raccoon.

Note
okay you said sent bkdk ideas & BET
1. The climax of she-ra w/ catra’s “dont you get it? I love you, i always have! So please, just this once, STAY!” speech and I actually can’t decide if it’s katsuki begging an unconscious deku to wake up or izuku begging an unconscious kacchan to wake up. But either way.
2. Bakusquad singing She’s In Love from the little mermaid stage show — again can’t decide if it’s about katsuki or deku (with the other one as flounder who is Most Upset about Ariel being in love w someone) (only this time it’s themself that is the love interest) (I have both sets of lyrics divided up and available upon request)
3. Say the Word from the mad ones (sorry yes I’m a theatre kid mb). That’s all. I’m tentatively working on an animatic but I can’t draw
4. Bksquad singing fixer upper from frozen. Bakugou is Kristoff & Deku is Anna obviously. I haven’t thought any further at all so just spitballing here but kirishima sven todoroki Elsa (obviously) aaaaand idk for hans. I feel like shindo yo would be the popular pick for a fake love interest?
5. Bakugou singing Granger Danger from a very potter musical.
6. Okay this is actually kiribaku but you by dodie, bkdk were fwb but deku caught feelings & bakugou starts dating kirishima
7. Atalanta (Greek myth) au — bk was raised by wolves/bears/dragons probably, then gets hunted by a king (mitsuki) who recognises him as his (her) son and takes him back to be prince. Tells him he has to get married, he says okay but Only someone who can beat me in a fight (in the myth it’s a foot race) and if they lose they die. Deku gets help from all might and wins (in the myth aphrodite gives the winner golden apples which distract atalanta, not sure how this would play out in this ver)
8. Howl’s Moving Castle au (book ver). Controversially, I have deku as howl, katsuki as Sophie & sentient OFA as calcifer. I can and Will back this up. (Kaminari as Martha/youngest sister who wants to marry rich and be a mom) & Uraraka as Lettie (middle sister who wants to be rich off her own hard work) (I actually have the whole cast planned out)
9. I’m currently writing a Carrie au. Deku is Carrie obvs. Katsuki is both Sue and Tommy, w Kiri coming in for some of Tommy’s advice giving moments. Decided Toga can be Chris and originally I had aged down!Dabi as Billy at a friend’s request but not 100% sure. Considered switching to mustard but like. We know nothing about him.
10. Barely fleshed out but I’ve seen a bunch of parallel universe swapping quirk fics where fantasy!bkdk or future!bkdk get swapped to the canon verse, including at least one w pregnant izuku and. Pregnant katsuki gets swapped to the canon verse because I think it’s WAY funnier
Okay I’m done now sorry
These were A LOT and as a uni student I don't have the time to do all/organise all in one post (but I will draw if more people insist on the asks (please submit your ideas separetly, it's a lot easier for my little pea brain)
BUT, i will give my piece about the songs, since I included them in my BKDK playlist
2. She's in Love - I see it as bkdk friends talking about Deku's (Ariel) clear crush while an oblivious Bakugou (Flounder) has barely been able to tell Izuku is in love and it's annoyed about it because he thinks it's not him (it is tho)
3. Say the Word - This is such a Katsuki-coded song about his feelings, it actually hurts me inside
4. Fixer Upper - Submitter's suggestion is good, BUT HAVE YOU CONSIDERED: Fantasy AU BKDK, where Kiri is the weredragon and Shouto is a prince and I would suggest Toga Himiko (my daughter) for Hans (would change some more of the story tbh, but that's the OG plan)
5. Granger Danger - COUNTERPOINT: Fem!BKDK in a ball, bkg is Draco, dk is Ron and they're talking about each other
6. What if She from Dodie but it's Izuku's POV cause he is enamoured by Katsuki buthas no clue what the other feels
Anyway, feel free to send more asks now !! I'll promise I'll get back to them, I just took a long break because of personal shit, but I'm back stronger than ever

my silly little non despair dr roomies au ramblings 💭
characters:
main housemates: chiaki + hajime + komaeda (aka tpg) and ibuki
floormates who are also dating main housemates and basically live in their apartment: akane and kaede
other people dating main housemates: maki
regular visitors: chihiro, himiko, kokichi, makoto, almost everyone in sdr2 with a focus on fuyuhiko, kazuichi, and maybe sonia
premise:
all dr casts are involved + hpa is still very much intact (unfortunately) (also i haven't decided if v3 cast also went to hpa or did their own thing lol)
tpg graduated together, alongside the rest of class 77-b and the year before class 78-b
tpg are qpps! platonic partners forever and ever
tpg decided to room with ibuki (much against their will at first since ibuki just needed to place to stay in between gigs but komaeda and ibuki had gotten closer so now she has occupied what was originally just a storage room for tpg)
they live in a 3 bedroom apartment in a skyrise building in the city (room 314 baybeyyy)
komahina share a room with each other while chiaki and ibuki have their own rooms respectively :]
relationships:
main couples: komahina, chikaemaki, miowari
other couples of importance: oumeno and naehiro
besties for the resties: tpg, chiaki + chihiro + himiko, komaeda + ibuki, kuzuhinasouda
komahina reconciled their differences nearing the end of their last term at hpa and took a shot at dating post grad before deciding to move in together a few years into their relationship
(chikaemaki origin story in the works) but chiaki was involved in komahina's plans to move in together in order to 'minimize rent costs' (they did not minimize rent costs) (not that they really needed to lol thank you old schmoney)
kaede lives in the same building as the main housemates and visits regularly! just not as often as akane because she's attached to her piano. chiaki spends as much time in her room as she does in kaede's apartment as they do a lot of parallel play ❤️ maki fucks off regularly for work trips and/or studies abroad though so piano tiles (chiaki and kaede) spend time together with her online gaming because e-daters (derogatory)
ibuki started seeing and dating akane after meeting again a high school reunion so now akane basically lives there (her apt is on the same floor but she's always in room 314 anyway)
oumeno and naehiro are high school sweethearts from their respective high schools ^___^ it did take oumeno longer to figure their shit out though LMFAO
occupations:
to be developed! i did not think that far ahead lol
the au itself takes place a few years after their intended hs graduation so they're all in their early 20s, but i'm not sure if i want them all to be in college / only some of them to be in college / all to be employed (part and/or full time) / etc
i think the only occupations i'm somewhat confident about are: ibuki (part-time singer-songwriter), chiaki (part-time streamer), and komahina are both currently in school working with hajime working part-time and komaeda as his stay-at-home wife (joke joke this is a joke don't k word me ty)
extras:
kaede's hs best friends are rantaro and shuichi who both visit occasionally
maki's hs best friends are kaito (visits occasionally) and himiko (always there)
himiko's hs best friend is angie (lives overseas)
i think apt 314 should have some pets. for funsies <3
🍓🐶🦔 i will keep adding to this post and changing things as i see fit :3 thanks for tuning in if you actually took the time to read this LOL 🍓🎼🔪

SILVERpelt. wc equalvalent of space) kiibo - retains their original name as a former kp tsumugi - Melony -> Melonytail (like th woman from pokemon shes a former kp)
some other notiable names in th au that i already revealed so far is eclipse - jasmineflower's former mentor in the Sister group Cherry/Cherrypaw - kotoko as Jasmineflower's apprentice. both back from the sister gruop and within the clans . yes she chased tenko over with her LOL

12 and/or 18, but say someone besides Spinner or Rei cuz I already love them
the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
you've made this hard for me by excluding those two... rei is one of those characters who is "unpopular" as in, ime, actually disliked rather than just ignored, and the target of a lot of unfair assessments by virtue of being an abused spouse; spinner is a character who is "unpopular" as in ignored, which is also puzzling because he's one of the few characters who actually sustains an emotional arc throughout the last half of the series, which is gay enough that people would go crazy over if he was drawn to be conventionally attractive. if he wasn't off-limits i would put in a strong argument for spinner... u_u
i don't think there are other, more important characters whose popularity are disproportionate to their screentime/role in the story, and i don't really like most random side characters anymore (rip dabistits jirou fan 2017-2019). imo bnha is one of those stories where you have more characters who are disproportionately popular for doing nothing than characters who are disproportionately unpopular (because 80% of the cast does nothing fr). but okay. in order to not be a copout i will still answer:
himiko. HEAR ME OUT, yes, she gets a lot of merch and made a strong showing early on the series. (take the following with a grain of salt because i only interact with 5 people in the fandom,) but i think himiko has recently been less favored in comparison to the other villains. dabi has a lot of haters but also diehard fans, and i think even normie bnha readers have come around to tomura. himiko hasn't really kept up with the growth of that diehard fanbase or general popularity, despite originally being one of the "villain trio." her motives aren't given the same depth as other characters, and there's usually very little focus on her as her own character. maybe people like her as part of the lov, as the "little sister," or worse as part of a ship with some adult, but rarely for herself. she's one of the few fleshed out female characters in the series, and people don't even take advantage of that.
it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...
there's so many possibilities the fandom sleeps on but lets just say spinaraki. i think it deserves to have people making genuinely unhinged posts about them and moodboards and quotes about walking with your lover into hell or whatever. there should be amvs set to i'll follow you into the dark by death cab for cutie. there should be artists devoted to them and fixating on just This One Ship. the amount of canon backing they have is unreal but everyone would rather draw two cute guys who canonically hate each other or something.

💋 - I wanna hear these pregame headcanons
//Alright fine, I'll summarize them as quickly as I can.
//However, these are CANON to the blog, so I might have to cut anything spoilery. Plus, some of them are pretty heavy, so keep that in mind
Kaede and her twin sister Kaori cut all ties with their birth parents because they did not agree with their life choices. Though they stuck together for a long while to carry each other through life, Kaori ran with a bad crowd, which caused her and Kaede to drift apart. Eventually, Kaori died in an accident, forcing Kaede into despair and taking away all faith she had in humanity.
Pregame Shuichi, much like V3 Shuichi, lived with his uncle thanks to his parents having a "hands-off" way of raising him. When he was in 5th grade, he solved a case of stolen lunch money at his school completely by chance; which resulted in a constant array of bullying from the friends of the thief who got expelled. This led Shuichi to question whether it was safe to reveal the truth or not, hence the inspiration for his Killing Game attitude initially.
Kokichi was raised by an abusive mother who lashed his neck and shoulders with a belt (which is why he wears the scarf.) The reason he joined Danganronpa is that the one thing that kept him going through his rough childhood was watching the goofy cartoon villains on children's TV shows.
Kaito's mother died from childbirth, and after becoming depressed as a result, his father drank himself to death, causing Kaito to be raised by his grandparents from a young age. Due to being a troublemaker who constantly got into fights with people, including his school teachers, great stress was put on the two old-timers. The reason why Kaito entered Dangarnonpa to achieve fame and fortune is because he wanted to stop being a burden to them and make life a little easier.
Maki pre-V3, much like post-V3 Maki, was raised as an orphan. With the help of an unknown best friend, she got a shady job (the inspiration for her talent and backstory in V3) and joined Danganronpa on a mission to find her real parents, hoping they would recognize her.
Tsumugi initially joined Danganronpa 52 to become more confident in herself, and to be someone else that she could truly be proud of. She stayed on Team DR who allowed her to write the 53rd season.
Keebo, originally a human before turned into the Ultimate Robot, was Tsumugi's childhood friend who she allowed to be incorporated as an additional cast member in the Killing Game narrative (this was based on a comic by chibigaia)
Rantaro first participated in the 52nd Killing Game to make money and support his very large family, but became trapped in the Killing Game cycle and was forced to participate as the Ultimate Survivor at the end of the game.
Miu was a gyaru through and through, being as much of a bitchqueen in real life as she is in the Killing Game, while also being a surprisingly studious and intelligent girl, but her attitude changed a lot after she suffered in a car crash (just like in V3's universe) which left her with some nasty body scars that she's embarrassed by.
Himiko was born (and in Survivor canon, does still have) autism, and as a child, was constantly depressed and out, like nothing she ever did really mattered.
Tenko was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age, and while she's not as violently misandrous as she is in the Killing Game, she has terrible androphobia, which she joins the Killing Game in hopes of overcoming.
Angie is an outcast due to being a religious foreigner, and living as a true example of a third-culture girl. Trying to let people know she only wants to make friends and is completely normal is the reason she signs on V3.
Kiyo had a sister IRL who was also very sickly, that he was very close with, however, not to the extent that he is in V3. He tries to get a well paying job to support her, and joins Danganronpa because it's her favourite show, and he wishes to rekindle her faith in life by being on it (with the results being completely out of his control)
Despite her capabilities, Kirumi gained a rep as a "useless tall girl" amongst her peers, even though she acts mature and is still a workaholic. She doesn't have many friends, and joins the Killing Game because "she wants to be useful to others." She also STILL doesn't know how to cut Konjac.
While I never really put my finger on what exactly his case would be, I pictured Ryoma being a man with many regrets in life, having lost many relationships due to his nature and actions, and feels innately guilty because of his past. He joins Danganronpa because he believes the suffering he recieves will redeem him of his past actions.
Much like his backstory within V3, Gonta was much bigger than most kids, leaving many of them to be afraid of him. Not only that, but because he lived in a wealthy family, everyone else thought he believed he was too good for them. His only friend growing up was a husky dog, which inspired the aspect of his backstory where he was raised by wolves.

Parallels
Parallels by MadScientistSidekick
It should have been a quick act of kindness, but something has gone very wrong.
After an accident involving a young physics student and a space warping quirk, Deku finds himself in a world where the light of One For All never existed to challenge All For One, and it's nothing like the world he knows. No UA, no pro heroes, no All Might. All For One is a boogeyman that casts a long shadow, leaving most of the population to live in fear with no trust in their government, which seems more interested in punishing and regulating metahuman citizens than protecting them.
Can Deku bring some hope to this new world?

You know, I've never seen anyone talk about how Ryoma and Shuichi's backstories mirror each other, when it comes to significant events in their life. Maybe this was gone over in-game and that's why nobody talks about it while I just missed it, but whatever, I'm gonna talk about it anyway
So we've got the murder case Shuichi solved, right? A crime was committed against the killer's loved one (driving them to suicide), so the killer took revenge by killing the victim. And then. And then!! We have Ryoma's altercation with the mafia, where they committed a crime against his loved one (killing his girlfriend, and I think his family too iirc?) and he took revenge by killing the entire mafia. Do you see the similarities in revenge murders playing a big role in both backstories?
However, this makes me curious about what happened directly after Ryoma's arrest. Shuichi was struck with the idea that maybe he was in the wrong for helping convict someone who'd just taken their revenge – were there people with similar opinions when it came to Ryoma's case? Did people even know the full story of his case, and why he killed that mafia? Or would there be people who didn't need to know the full story to argue what he did was righteous, because they saw the mafia as merely scum better off gone?
I think there's a lot of opportunities to explore when it comes to this parallel and the opinions of the general public surrounding Ryoma's murders. And I'm probably missing some details since it's been five years since I saw a playthrough of the game, but... knowing Danganronpa, they probably could have done more with this.

Tumblr media
Hi! I’m here to bring you yet another Danganronpa tier list: the sexuality tier list, which you can find here.
Now I’m going to be honest here: I don’t really have any LGBT headcanons. It’s just not really something I focus on much when it comes to fandoms. Instead I usually just focus on ships, and as a result from that I tend to present a lot of characters as LGBT in fanfictions and posts I’ve made or reblogged. In other words, a massive chunk of my “headcanons” here are a direct result of shipping (as well as information I’ve picked up from the games themselves). That being said, it was interesting to actually think about this for once, so I’m kinda glad I did the tier list. And it gave me an excuse to bring back the rainbow color scheme I usually put in my tier lists for aesthetic reasons.
The original tier list had Straight at the top, but I moved it to the bottom for two reasons. One, this is Tumblr and that’s not what you’re here for. Two, I gave it a neutral color, and having a gray section next to a white section (i.e. the title of the list) like that looked bad to me. I definitely prefer this setup just on aesthetic alone.
Because this is largely based on ships, I feel it needs to be said that representation does not factor into this chart in any way. I know it probably looks bad that the only character in the Lesbian category is one of my least favorite (though NOT hated or even disliked, I should point out) characters in the main series. That has nothing to do with the fact that she’s a lesbian. She’s just a jerk, and usually not in a way that’s at least entertaining enough for me to like her.
Also keep in mind that this is just the main cast of the main series games. If you were to include characters from the DR3 anime, UDG, or the spin-offs, the Gay, Lesbian, and Ace categories would get more rep, certainly. Think Juzo, Yui, Takemichi, that gay guy with the trumpet, etc.
With that said, let’s go through the list:
Gay
Not gonna lie, one of the reasons why Rantaro is here (and not in Ace) is because of ships. Though I do sometimes ship him with girls, canon suggests he’s not interested in dating girls, and most fans seem to headcanon him as either gay or ace because of this, so I respected that. That being said, I also acknowledge he’s a very popular character in mlm ships, and at the time I was putting this together I hadn’t gotten to Taka yet so the Gay tier was still empty, and Byakuya was already sitting in Ace, so all of that swayed me to putting Rantaro here instead of Ace.
Taka was much easier to place here. He strikes me as a closeted gay man who probably doesn’t even realize he is gay. “Hey, let’s all hang out in the bath, guys! Getting naked is essential to form bonds with your fellow man! No need to be ashamed, it’s tradition!"
Lesbian
Again, ships. I only ship Hiyoko with one other character, and as soon as I say that you already know who she is.
Bisexual (Male Preference)
Akane is mostly here to account for any wlw ships I may have of her (e.g. Hina, Sonia maybe). Obviously she has a thing with Nekomaru, so Male Preference.
Chiaki is here for the same reason as Akane. I’ve shipped her with characters like Sonia and Ibuki before, but she really digs Hajime.
Chihiro honestly could have been anywhere in the Bi and Pan sections, but I ultimately went with Male Preference because of ships, specifically the fact that outside of the more... R18 circles of the Interwebs Chihiro tends to be shipped with guys more often than girls. Also doesn’t hurt that my OTP is Naehiro. I mean, have you seen how often Chihiro blushes around Makoto? (There’s more to it than that, as I’ve covered in the past. I’m just trying to add more fuel to the fire.)
Himiko is probably one of the few characters that isn’t here mainly because of ships. I do think she has some attachment towards Tenko, but I also get “I’m uncomfortable around her” vibes from her, and there are moments where she seems to crush on Kokichi (of all people) so that’s why she’s here. Still very much bi, though.
Hina has a crush on Makoto and has a complex around wishing she was more feminine so she can attract boys. So why isn’t she in the Straight section? ...Because Sakura, duh. And Kyoko too. And any other wlw ship you can think of that might work with Hina.
Honestly if it wasn’t for Miu I probably would have considered putting Kokichi in Gay. Again, while shipping plays a big part of my choices here, much like with Rantaro I have no qualms with putting a character in a tier that contradicts any ships I might have with that character, if those ships aren’t something I’m super invested in. This is a very important distinction, because it’s why I let ships sway my hand for so many of these even if I am also okay with going “Just because I ship this doesn’t mean I headcanon it” as I did with Rantaro. And honestly Kokichi’s ship teasing with Himiko does come off as more trollish than a sign that he’s into her, but he really gets into his back-and-forth with Miu, in my personal opinion, and he gets into it far more often with her for that matter. It’s why it’s one of my favorite ships for both of them tbh, and it’s because I like the ship so much that I just can’t ignore it for this sexuality headcanon tier list.
Maki... is here because of ships (e.g. Kaede).
Sakura... is here because of ships (e.g. Hina). ...What, you were expecting me to put a guy in the example? Remember, she has a boyfriend in canon.
Sayaka... is here because of... NOT ships, but DRAT. Yes, really. (”We really got down and dirty, Naegi-kun.”)
Sonia... strikes me as someone who swings both ways. I can’t describe exactly why I feel that way, but yes.
Bisexual (No Preference)
Celeste wants a harem of vampire boys but shipping her with Kyoko is also very popular and honestly i feel like it would fit her character. She’s got a look that says “I could get any ass I want and I know it.”
Ibuki is decked out in blues and pinks, and also I ship her fairly evenly among both boys and girls. She just screams bi icon to me, more so than any other character in the series.
Junko is either bi with no preferences or pan. She is an equal opportunity heart-and-soul-breaker and lust-for-despair machine.
There is no Mukuro in this list, but honestly I would probably put her where I put Junko anyway.
Kaede... is here because of ships (e.g. Miu, Maki)
Honestly I had no idea where to put Kirumi, so I just randomly chose one that I wouldn’t regret later if I ever put more thought into who I shipped her with.
I’m pretty sure Nagito being bisexual has some degree of canon attached to it??? I think??? I’m not entirely sure tbh, but fuck it. I’m doing this for fun anyway, so this doesn’t really matter.
Shuichi, like all Danganronpa protags, is bi as fuck. I also find him to be more shippable with guys than the other two protags, so IMO he has no preference.
Toko might have a thing or two for pretty boys, but... Komaru, I mean, this isn’t exactly shocking, I don’t think. Probably was closeted before she met Komaru. I mean she did focus on Hina’s boobs a lot in DR1, let’s not forget.
Tsumugi, much like Kirumi, is here because I haven’t put much thought into her ships.
Bisexual (Female Preference)
Gundham has a thing with Sonia in canon, but I can see him being bi. So... yeah, ships again.
Hajime, like all Danganronpa protags, is bi as fuck. It’s just that his Chiaki and Mikan game is just too strong.
Hifumi might claim to only like 2D, but his interest in Chihiro both in human form and computer program form (and the fact that this didn’t go away after the gender reveal) places him here.
Kaito strikes me as a closeted bisexual. The kind that could start any given conversation with “I’m not gay, but...”
Kazuichi also strikes me as a closeted bisexual, only his “I’m not gay, but...” is rooted more in dumbass than it is in systematic homophobia.
Korekiyo... is here because of ships (e.g. Rantaro).
Kyoko is bi as fuck, and I can see her having a preference towards girls in particular. She gets shipped with girls a lot (e.g. Celeste, Hina, Yui, and even Junko and Mukuro), and when she is shipped with boys it’s usually just pretty boys (e.g. Makoto, Byakuya, Ryota, Shuichi, and, depending on your interpretation, Chihiro). Also note that aside from Makoto and maybe Byakuya, Kyoko’s girl ships are far more popular than her boy ships. Just something I’ve noticed over the years.
Leon... is here because of ships (e.g. Chihiro).
Mahiru is here because I’m pretty sure she has a thing for Hajime in her FTEs, but obviously she tends to get shipped with girls more often (especially Hiyoko), and I agree.
Makoto, like all Danganronpa protags, is bi as fuck. It’s just that his Kyoko, Hina, Sayaka, and Mukuro game is just too strong.
Mikan may be interested in Hajime somewhat, but her obsession with Junko cannot be ignored, no matter how much some of you may want to.
Mondo is another character that strikes me as a closeted bisexual. He is said to strike out all the time with girls, so I do think he’s attracted to women. And I do get some vibes that he’s attracted to Chihiro pre-reveal. And if circumstances had been different, I imagine he probably still would have been post-reveal. But obviously it’s his bond with Taka that I feel cements his sexuality in, at the very least, an mlm category.
Tenko... is here NOT because of ships, but because I’m pretty sure she’s at least sort of interested in Shuichi because of some canon thing... and also I don’t want to put her in Lesbian just because it feels like I’d be stereotyping the Lesbian category if I do that. If we were to compare her to the character that I did put in Lesbian, Hiyoko doesn’t treat people like shit because they’re men, she’s an equal-opportunity asshole. Still not the best representation for lesbians by a long shot, but at least Hiyoko doesn’t follow the stereotype of a man-hating lesbian. She’s just like that, and that’s okay. But putting Tenko there, especially if she’s shown some degree of interest in a male character at some point in the game, just rubs me the wrong way personally, because it would feel like I’m ignoring canon just to stereotype her. But that’s just a personal hang up of mine. No disrespect intended toward anyone who genuinely feels that Tenko is a lesbian. Maybe you see something there that I don’t, and that’s perfectly fine.
Pansexual
I don’t remember exactly how her FTEs went, so I’m not going to get into that, but Angie just comes off as pan to me, like gender doesn’t fit into the equation at all for her.
Gonta I can see as either pan or ace. I feel like he wouldn’t care about gender, and honestly the only reason I decided to put him in Pan rather than Ace is because of that scene with Miu.
Imposter is not only pan, they are currently OT3ing it up with Ibuki and Ryota as we speak, and that’s a fact.
Keebo... is mostly here because of ships. A lot of ships, actually. Mostly male ships (Kokichi, Shuichi, Kazuichi, and, depending on your interpretation, Chihiro) but there’s also Miu to consider. And the Miu game is SO strong that I put him in Pan instead of, say, Male Preference.
Just gonna lump them together because I have the same thing to say about both of them: Miu and Teruteru would **** anything that walks. What did I censor? Well, I’m doing the Nier: Automata thing, so you can put whatever you want in there and trust me, it would probably fit, for better or for worse.
Ace
I know this is an unpopular opinion, because Naegami, but I just don’t think Byakuya is interested in anyone, at least not in that way. He might be fascinated with how common people live, because it’s so foreign to him, but that’s about it.
Straight
Even though I do ship Fuyuhiko with some of the boys, his Peko game is so strong that honestly I can’t see him actually dating anyone aside from Peko outside of some very niche fanfiction.
Honestly, Hiro was another one that I was just like “I have no idea what to do with you.” I think maybe his team up with Kanon made me eventually choose to put him in Straight? I don’t remember. I clearly didn’t put much thought into Hiro.
I really only ship Nekomaru with Akane, so that’s why he’s here. I’m sure if I dive deep enough into my psyche I can pull an mlm ship with Nekomaru in it out of my ass, but like Rantaro that wouldn’t be significant enough to change anything.
Peko is in the same boat as Fuyuhiko. I have shipped her with girls before, but her Fuyuhiko game is just too strong.
Ryoma had a girlfriend once, and as far as I can remember he didn’t really seem interested in anybody in the game, so that’s all I have to go off of for him.
-----
So there you have it. Explanations for literally all of them! Explanations that were definitely not pulled out of my ass as I was typing them, nope, certainly not. Definitely won’t be tagging all of them, but I may tag the ones with the longest entries. And like all the tier lists I’ve done, this was just for fun and honestly any opinion I have for any of these characters could change at a moment’s notice because my brain is fickle like that. Tried my best to make sure that every tier had at least one character in it, but I did so without trying to force characters in places that I personally did not believe they should go. I hope you all enjoyed my dive into this area of fandom that I rarely dive into (the LGBT headcanons, not the ships, obviously). It was a lot of fun, and hopefully it will stay fun and not result in angry anons blasting me for my opinions. I am grateful that this never seems to happen to me, but I’ve seen it happen to others and I know what Tumblr is capable of at its worst. These are just headcanons and a matter of personal opinion, and if you disagree with them, that’s perfectly okay. Your feelings and opinions are also valid.

autoclave // himikiyo analysis
this was originally posted on dra and ao3 back in summer 2020, but i’m crossposting it here upon request! this meta piece looks at himiko and korekiyo as foils within v3′s narrative and can be read as a tool to help in writing them (in a romantic sense or otherwise) or simply as a character analysis.
you can find the ao3 post here
although this is an old post, i’m still very proud of it and always seeking to introduce himikiyo to a wider audience so rbs greatly appreciated!
intro
so, this a blog i’ve been wanting to write for a long while. about a year ago (probably longer by the time this is actually posted), i wrote my ‘why i ship himikiyo’ blog. it was my first attempt to try to condense some of my reasons and feelings into a more organized format, rather than scattered over zillions of different conversations, posts, and so on. even at the time though, i wasn’t satisfied. i knew i probably wanted to make a follow-up at some point, but it wasn’t really a top priority.
now, after mulling over ideas for a few months, i’m finally ready to give it a try. in some ways, this is a sequel to ‘why i ship himikiyo,’ and that’s kinda the angle i’m coming from, but this isn’t meant to just be about romance or shipping. the original blog was a general overview on my personal reasons why it became my favorite ship, something i could link to people who asked me why. today, i’ll instead be comparing their characters, pointing out some similarities, and talking about their potential dynamic from that perspective.
as friends, enemies, or anything else, i think they have such a unique, fascinating dynamic, and as i’ve steadily talked to more and more people over the past couple of years who feel similarly, the more reasons i find. if this blog inspires even one person to make some content of their own, that would make me very happy.
getting to the point, what specifically am i going to be comparing? the main focuses are themes of vulnerability, control, and repression. in these areas, i think it could be argued that they serve as foils to each other, illuminating what could have been if himiko wasn’t able to move forward, or if korekiyo was. korekiyo is the dark to himiko’s light. just as she starts on the path towards real change and growth, kiyo is there to show the dangers of making the opposite choice.
please note that this blog touches on themes of depression, including a mention of suicidal ideation, and sister’s abuse of korekiyo is brought up multiple times, so take caution if topics related to that make you uncomfortable!
big chunks of my argument rest on the fact that this abuse did occur, but i don’t discuss the textual support for it at length, as many other people have already done so (and this blog would be like 2k words longer if i did). instead, it’s assumed that the reader already understands the basic idea that kiyo is an abuse victim. if you disagree, you probably won’t enjoy it much, and that’s fine. it’s not a point i’m remotely interested in debating.
aside from that, as always, this analysis is just my own interpretation!
emotional repression
first off, emotional repression. it’s true that many characters in v3 engage in this to some extent, hiding perceived weaknesses or undesirable emotions. a whole blog could be written talking about the whole cast on just this issue. unsurprising, considering the truth vs lies theme of the game. but once you dig a little deeper, korekiyo and himiko’s specific ways of hiding their feelings have more in common.
although many characters in the cast have ways of hiding their true emotions, like angie’s perpetual cheerfulness, kaito’s reckless confidence, or kokichi’s mischievous nature, they still do show emotion in some form or another. none of those three could be called stoic, that’s for sure. one way himiko and korekiyo differ from their classmates is that they both try to repress their emotions entirely, rather than simply masking them with other ones.
in himiko’s case, this should be obvious. her early apathy and struggles around learning to be more expressive form the basis of much of her character development. she doesn’t express much passion or seem to hold strong opinions on anything in the first couple of chapters (aside from her magic, of course). even after she begins bonding with angie, her comments about atua aren’t exactly *emotional.* she does draw comfort from having a source of escapism and someone else to make decisions for her, which i’ll be talking more about later, but her overall demeanor doesn’t change much. tenko and shuichi both talk about how hard it is to even interpret her facial expressions.
this is perceived by the majority of the cast as being pure laziness, and himiko’s own comments about things being too much of a pain don’t exactly do much to convince them otherwise. it’s not that simple, of course, but because it seems to be, pretty much everyone dismisses her as not being worth their time. despite how bad it must feel to be treated that way, himiko has no reason to try to change their minds. excessive laziness is a flaw, but not necessarily a weakness. it’s a choice — if that’s the reason for her behavior, she could do plenty of things and be successful at them, but she doesn’t feel like it.
the overwhelming depression and fear she actually feels, however...that’s a vulnerability that can be exploited. himiko is easily the physically weakest one there, not a good thing to be in a killing game. with her fragile mental state on top of that, she could be a very tempting victim. indeed, ryoma’s death in chapter 2 proves how depression and suicidal ideation can easily be taken advantage of. all of this was probably on himiko’s mind. she wanted to avoid seeming weak to others, but even more than that, she wanted to avoid seeming weak to herself.
distraction and escapism are very common coping methods. sometimes even just thinking about all the horrible things going on around you can be enough to crush your will to carry on. the more you bottle things up, the more it might feel like if you let yourself give in even for a moment, you might never be able to get it under control again. falling apart wouldn’t do anything to change the awful situation she’s in, and would, in her mind, reveal once and for all what a useless burden she really is. as we see several times, such as after she investigates rantaro’s dorm room in chapter 6, himiko is someone who desperately wants to be useful and have worth to her friends. this isn’t outwardly expressed much until after she’s developed, but it’s doubtful the actual feeling came out of nowhere. that desire to be useful was there all along.
one of the biggest examples in the first half of the game is the aftermath of her magic show. as the ultimate magician, her talent is her biggest source of pride. himiko mentions several times how her magic is supposed to make people smile and heal broken hearts. not only do most of her classmates freely ridicule her magic, her show is co-opted by kirumi for murder. it becomes the exact opposite of what she wanted to accomplish, accelerating her downward spiral and prompting her to give up even more control to angie. the student council is another chance to give herself meaning, and it works, but only for a while.
this repression and distancing from her emotions is also shown in her initial lack of connections to others. pre-development, himiko doesn’t try to get close to the others. if anything, she pushes them away. in both kaede and shuichi’s first free time events with her, she acts disinterested and makes no real effort to engage. likewise, tenko’s affection is entirely unwanted and unwelcome. himiko repeatedly makes it clear that they aren’t as close as tenko thinks they are. even angie, arguably her one friend in the first half of the game, is the one to approach himiko. angie is a very outgoing, controlling person, and that suits himiko’s needs at the time, but i don’t think they would have gotten close if angie hadn’t been the one to initiate it.
setting aside the extra variable of tenko’s pushy behavior, these examples show a pattern of fear and distrust. you never know who might betray you — if you don’t get close to someone in the first place, you can’t get hurt. additionally, keeping everyone at arm’s length lessens the risk of someone finding all the parts of herself she wants to hide. untethered, she’s free to ignore reality as much as possible.
korekiyo clearly has a whole mental health cocktail of his own, and is even more isolated. he’s not shy or antisocial — far from it. he likes to be around people in order to observe them, and doesn’t seem to have any qualms about contributing in trials or chatting with others, especially when anything connected to anthropology comes up. however, like himiko, he keeps everyone at arm’s length. he’s not really shown to be close to any person in particular. because of his sister, he’s likely never had a true friend of his own, at least not since he was a young child. the mere idea of it would be unthinkable. it would be a distraction from his mission.
by maintaining his role as an observer and his classmates as research subjects, he can both more easily fulfill sister’s wishes and separate himself from the real danger of the situation. even during the time limit in chapter 1, he shows no fear for his life, as if it all has nothing to do with him. though he does call everyone his friends before his execution, it’s not a sentiment that anyone seems to take seriously, and maybe rightfully so. it’s possible to have casual friends and acquaintances who you don’t know much about, but for a deep, meaningful connection to be established, some level of emotional vulnerability is needed. with kiyo, that’s never given.
while his affect isn’t quite as flat as himiko’s, he comes off as ‘creepy’ from the very beginning, and some of that is due to his calm, unruffled attitude. multiple people are disturbed by how casually he can talk about gruesome topics, and when his lab is discovered in chapter 3, shuichi is quite surprised by his behavior, emphasizing how unusual it is. both positive and negative emotions — his gleeful shouting and rushing around to check out all the artifacts and his threats to kokichi respectively — are openly on display for the very first time.
prior to the chapter 3 trial, both korekiyo and himiko are shown to lose their composure in relation to only two things: being able to show off their talents, and having things related to those talents threatened. those biggest interests are deeply important as sources of comfort and meaning, and they also provide a sense of control. however, nobody can keep things bottled up forever. there’s always a breaking point, and these smaller events hint towards the fact that they’ll each eventually lose that control in spectacular fashion.
this leads into my next topic, but before that, i want to mention one more detail. after korekiyo’s execution, kokichi says that “it’s not good to lie to yourself” in relation to himiko’s behavior. the timing was incredibly appropriate. the connection to korekiyo isn’t brought up by anyone, but in his last scenes, he was likely lying to himself as well — about his relationship with his sister.
it’s not uncommon for abuse survivors to minimize the severity of the abuse or outright deny that anything bad happened at all, because that’s what the abuser groomed them to believe. i won’t go into listing them all, but even with the series’ questionable track record when it comes to handling sensitive topics like abuse and mental illness, there’s plenty of hints that the situation was far from the mutual arrangement kiyo makes it out to be. unfortunately, he never gets the chance to heal and, as kokichi would put it, stop lying to himself.
not only does he die believing his own lies, everyone else believes them too. feel free to correct me if it turns out i forgot a line, but as far as i remember from the many times i’ve been through v3, with the exception of optional flavor text if you check places like his room or lab, korekiyo is never specifically mentioned again after his death. he’s the only one in the game this is true for (except maybe tsumugi but like. the epilogue isn’t that long.) even posthumously, he gets no opportunity for change. this is one example of how korekiyo’s stagnation acts as a foil to himiko’s growth.
behavior when upset
in the previous section, i established that both characters keep things bottled up in favor of projecting a calm, apathetic front, but when pushed to the limit, that control will slip, leading to emotional outbursts. digging even deeper, their mannerisms when those outbursts do happen or come close to happening share some similarities as well.
the most notable example is that they’re both shown to shake uncontrollably when distressed. in korekiyo’s case, the entire screen shakes too, and at one point in his breakdown, the influence gauge damage sound effect even plays, the only time this happens without the player actually getting something wrong. plenty of other characters are shown to have meltdowns in some form or another, kirumi probably being the most dramatic example, but kiyo and himiko are the only two whose sprites shake like this.
trembling or shaking is, of course, one of the major symptoms of panic attacks. feeling out of control, stumbling over your words, sweating, a sense of impending doom...as someone who has personal experience with panic attacks and how they feel, i see korekiyo’s breakdown as a pretty clear example of one. while himiko never has reason to reach quite that level of distress, and seems to internalize her feelings more than korekiyo anyway (eg her going totally silent and unresponsive vs him getting increasingly outspoken and combative), there are enough clues to suggest that she has similar tendencies.
it’s possible that part of the reason they both keep their feelings so tightly locked down is because of this tendency towards intense anxiety. a natural reaction to fear of losing control is to try to control things even more.
secondly, they both fixate on the supposed failure of an event instead of being concerned about the murder that just occurred. in chapter 2, himiko’s magic show is ruined by the discovery of ryoma’s body in the water tank. as everyone else reacts to that and starts investigating, himiko is mostly still focused on her show. she’s shocked about ryoma, of course, but most of her dialogue in the investigation is about being sad her magic show couldn’t make everyone smile and defending her magic. this carries into the trial, until the trick is figured out and she’s forced to agree.
in the next chapter, korekiyo’s dialogue in the latter part of the investigation matches up with that pretty closely. he feigns surprise at tenko’s death, but doesn’t even bother pretending to be that concerned about it, focusing on the seance instead. the fact that he can’t stop talking about the seance failing instead of the more pressing matter at hand is commented on and maki tells him off pretty harshly, much like how everyone reacts to himiko’s stubbornness about her magic.
obviously, the biggest difference here is that himiko was merely framed for ryoma’s murder, while korekiyo really did kill tenko. it’s possible that reacting the way he did was a calculated effort to avoid suspicion, and i do think that he was pretty confident he’d be getting away with it at that point, but i think at least a small part of it was a genuine attempt at maintaining control. knowing you’re about to be on trial has to be pretty damn stressful. even for an experienced killer like korekiyo, the class trial experience is not the same as something like evading the police in the outside world. the single minded focus, the small pool of suspects, the life or death stakes...all of that makes the killing game riskier.
both of them stay focused on a topic they’re intimately familiar with, and whose stakes are lower than the murder at hand. this is yet another tactic of denial and distraction, using the magic show and seance respectively to avoid fully processing (and potentially panicking over) the possibility of impending death. much like some of the other things i’ve already discussed, this is fairly common, and something i’ve experienced myself. when faced with something overwhelmingly distressing or traumatic, in that initial period of shock, you can find yourself focusing on something that doesn’t matter at all in the grand scheme of things, because that’s easier to cope with in the moment.
to make this a bit easier to understand, i’ll provide a couple of other examples. in my fic ‘the things that scare us today,’ himiko can’t stop thinking about how someone’s going to need to clean the blood off the counter, rather than thinking about how the source of the blood is the person she just caught korekiyo burying in the woods. or for a real life example, after i got the news that my mom died, one of the first things i started worrying about was who was going to help me do my makeup for the funeral, because i wasn’t very good at doing it myself yet. completely irrelevant compared to the fact that i’d just lost the most important person in my life, and yet that’s what my brain latched onto.
the fact that (in my experience) this sort of reaction happens most often when faced with extreme loss isn’t a coincidence. coping with death is one of the core themes of chapter 3 and korekiyo’s character as a whole, and one of the threads that ties him and himiko together.
next, my final example before i wrap up this section. this one is less significant than the others, but i still felt like it was a detail worth noting. korekiyo is one of the characters in the game who is never really shown crying (though you can hear it in his voice towards the end, particularly in the original japanese), and himiko is first shown tearing up during their last conversation, and full-on crying for the first time right after his execution. this marks the real beginning of her character development, and i think it’s interesting that such an open display of emotion happens right after the death of someone who shared so many of her unhealthy coping mechanisms.
(also the fact that she kinda started crying while they were still talking and she was telling him she couldn’t accept it [the case ending up like this] lowkey hints that maybe she’s sad abt him dying too but i said this wasn’t a shipping blog so)
self-soothing
now, how about the other side of the coin? the ways they act when attempting to prevent distress are comparable too. they’re both interested in aspects of the supernatural or occult, and those interests form the basis for escapist fantasies. when the worst happens and they’re forced back to reality, they each use the death of someone important to propel them forward instead of giving up.
korekiyo is incredibly vocal about his interest in seances, spirits, and all things macabre. some of the pushing for a seance is because he wanted to kill, of course, but he talks about it even before chapter 3. he can’t possibly have been planning the seesaw trick before his lab was unlocked, since he’d have no way to know the equipment for the caged child would be there, and yet he mentions performing a seance as early as the chapter 2 flashback light. this, coupled with the anecdotes about participating in them before, indicates that his passion is genuine.
this belief in spirits and communicating with them is absolutely crucial to his stability and sense of self. we as players can see that the sister tulpa is just that, a tulpa. she’s something originating from his own brain, completely separate from the actual person who died. but korekiyo himself wholeheartedly believes it’s his sister’s spirit possessing him, and this is what gives him his mission and reason for living.
he mentions that in the year between sister’s death and his own near death experience, he “nearly went mad.”
exactly what this might have entailed is up for debate, but it’s safe to say that if he describes it that way, he was far more erratic and visibly unstable than he is by the time of the killing game. he never mentions his parents or other important people besides his sister, and talks about traveling extensively for fieldwork, so it’s also a safe assumption that he had no support system for dealing with his grief. the comfort of believing she returned acts as an anchor, easing his distress and allowing him to, at the very least, appear functional.
his beliefs about death are also integral to his comfort with killing. contrary to some popular opinions, i don’t think he ever enjoyed killing. felt no remorse? yes. felt a sense of satisfaction in pleasing sister? yes. sadistic enjoyment in the actual act, just for the hell of it? no, i don’t think there’s any evidence to support that. he even takes offense at being characterized as a “bloodthirsty, indiscriminate killer.” whenever he mentions needing/wanting to kill, he specifies that he wants to kill for sister. korekiyo doesn’t strike me as an innately violent person. without the incentive of thinking it’s what sister wants/something he must do for someone else, i doubt he would become a serial killer.
by the time of his death, he’s killed dozens of girls and become desensitized, but he probably didn’t start out that way. most people faced with needing to take a life would struggle quite a bit. by fully embracing beliefs about ghosts and thinking that death is just a change of form and not really a bad thing, he could justify his own actions and avoid feeling guilty.
if this belief system was damaged, it would shatter him. not only would his rationale for killing be fake, he would have been doing it for NOTHING, and he’d have to grieve his sister all over again, this time with no hope of an eventual reunion. having “nearly gone mad” the first time, a second time would be even worse. this is all he has.
(maybe a bit of a tangent, but him hugging himself and other forms of physical self-soothing are also very obvious. this is meant to be indicative of the whole tulpa thing, but it also suggests that he’s very touch-starved and has probably gone without any kind of non-violent contact from others for a long time, even something as simple as a hug. turning to this kind of outward self-soothing in public settings where it’s likely to be seen as weird or socially inappropriate fits well with a history of childhood trauma, which can hinder the development of coping skills.)
himiko’s stage magic isn’t actually occult or supernatural, unlike korekiyo’s hobbies, but she wants people to see it that way. the game not exploring her interest in actual, witchy magic was a wasted opportunity in my opinion, but regardless, it’s not much of a stretch to imagine she likes it. her status as a mage and the power that comes with the abilities she insists she has helps keep her from feeling weak and afraid, as i talked about in previous sections. it pushes away negative feelings just like korekiyo’s beliefs push away guilt and loneliness.
when angie introduces her to her religion, that’s an even better tool for escapism. himiko doesn’t discard her mage persona, but she devotes much of her time and focus to helping angie and praying to atua. trying to convince yourself that you’re strong and powerful can be helpful, but giving up control to a separate, all-powerful being is even better. she doesn’t have to accept responsibility for scary decisions or fear what might happen. all she has to do is follow directions and atua will make sure everything’s okay. this is part of why cults can seem so appealing.
whenever those negative feelings start cropping back up, like when tenko interrupts her praying or when angie reveals that tenko betrayed the student council, himiko retreats back into that mindset as quickly as possible, deferring to angie’s judgment. it shields her from the full impact of everything going on.
just as korekiyo finds purpose in his mission to reach 100 friends, pursuing that goal above all else, himiko finds the motivation to help the other survivors end the killing game after chapter 3. she shuts down and openly gives up for most of the investigation and the early part of the trial, only finding her way after getting a couple of pep talks and taking on the responsibility of going forward for angie and tenko’s sake as well as her own.
himiko’s motivation from these deaths is a positive force. she grows as a person and helps the rest of the cast through the second half of the game, ultimately ending up one of the survivors despite monokuma and tsumugi trying to crush everyone’s spirits time and time again. her strength is adaptive, and far healthier than the sources of comfort she was relying on before.
kiyo’s motivation, on the other hand, is a negative, destructive force. stuck on a self-destructive path and unable or unwilling to find a new source of strength, he ends up essentially digging his own grave. he’s inflexible, prioritizing his mission over everything else to the point of actually hindering that very goal. he acknowledges that he knew he’d have plenty of chances to kill after escaping the academy, but couldn’t resist the temptation to go through with it anyway. with patience and self-control, he could’ve made it out and accomplished what he wanted.
personas for control
comfort and companionship aren’t the only purposes of the tulpa. her personality, likely reflective of what her real life counterpart was like, is more aggressive and controlling than korekiyo’s. for instance, she directly insults the other students and generally acts quite arrogant, in contrast to korekiyo consistently saying that he considers all of them friends and only lashing out when he’s panicked.
this is also why she only comes out when he’s in serious distress. as i’ve said before, it’s natural to feel the need to regain your composure and take control of a situation when you feel yourself slipping, but the more upset you get, the harder it is to accomplish. korekiyo’s abilities to control the direction of a debate and generally seem powerful rest on a rather delicate foundation. the moment that calm veneer is stripped away, it becomes obvious how unstable he actually is. he’s not used to being the one in control, the one with power. sister is. asserting control over others through aggression is a tactic of bullies and abusers.
i’d venture a guess that it might feel reassuring to be on the other end of that for once. he knows firsthand how good she is at getting her way, so maybe some small part of him actually hopes that coercing the others into voting wrong is possible. however, he’s not completely on the other end — sister is still clearly controlling him through the trial, and her primary reason for making herself known is to keep his behavior in check. this shows how deeply ingrained her manipulation is. years after her death, in a life or death situation that would make anyone panic, he’s still subconsciously punishing himself for not living up to her draconian standards. this can also be seen earlier in chapter 3, when his lab is discovered. after getting overly excited about doing a seance and shuichi refusing him, he apologizes. this is the only time the voiced line “forgive me, i lost myself” is used. the polar opposite of sister’s “apologize, apologize, apologize,” to the point that it would make sense as a reply to it.
in order to deal with intense stress or discomfort, he lets the tulpa deal with it. this distances him from the problem at hand and responsibility for it as well as providing comfort. by hiding behind and deferring to the judgment of someone he sees as wise and powerful, he can feel protected and taken care of. something that he’s probably never genuinely experienced.
we can guess that needing to apologize to her for any number of transgressions, including being visibly upset, was part of their dynamic. furthermore, korekiyo sees it as a good thing, a sign she wants the best for him. apologizing and submitting to her whims, making her happy, would then bring relief and confidence, and this pattern continues with the tulpa. giving control to get control.
himiko’s use of personas and other selves is much more subtle, in keeping with the fact that she’s on an upward trajectory instead of downward. it’s also more of a conscious choice. she knows she’s putting on an act. korekiyo represents what could happen if she goes on lying to herself for too long and starts to actually believe it. the all-powerful, universally revered mage is a fantasy version of herself that’s much more capable of solving her problems. if only she could become that himiko instead, everything would be better.
this tendency of hers actually seems to decrease throughout the game, but she still goes back to it when she’s especially rattled, reinforcing the idea that it’s a defense mechanism. for example, after she’s trapped in the hidden room and finds the secret passage to escape, she claims it was her magic that let her escape before continuing on to explain the real reason.
pushing negative emotions onto ‘someone else’ could also, in both cases, help fend off the possibility of rejection. if they never present their true, vulnerable selves, then any negative reactions won’t hurt as much. both of them tend to be on the periphery of the group. i’ve already discussed how part of this is due to their own actions of pushing people away, but that’s not quite the whole story. neither of them seem to be taken seriously by many people, and nobody really holds back when it comes to teasing or insulting them.
tenko is the only person who fully indulges and supports himiko’s magic. pretty much everyone else has at least one scathing comment about it, and people like kokichi and miu go much further with their insults, as they’re wont to do. she does grow closer to the others in the later part of the game, but there’s still a sense of distance that’s very obvious compared to, say, the training trio’s friendship. maki is still making snide comments to her by chapter 6, while himiko is clearly trying to get more friendly with her. part of that is just maki being maki, but overall, there’s a sense that the other characters don’t quite see himiko as being on the same level as them, something that takes until the very end to fade away.
similarly, hardly anyone seems to care when korekiyo tries to talk about his interests. people tend to be either creeped out, or generally resigned to yet another anthropology lecture. any talk about seances or the occult gets double the negative reaction. kaito and maki in particular are quite hostile towards korekiyo at times, though the worst moment of kaito’s was toned down significantly in english compared to the japanese dialogue. korekiyo doesn’t make much of an effort to integrate himself with the group, but why would he when it seems like nobody wants him around anyway?
it’s hard to say whether the group’s dislike bothers him or not. he never gives a clear indication that it does, and maybe he truly thinks it doesn’t. but deep down, there’s probably a great deal of self-loathing waiting to be unearthed. a sense that nobody could ever understand or love him, that sister is the only one who would accept him and care for him. his entire belief system regarding love and healthy relationships is warped.
post-trial wrap up
finally, here we are. the only place this building pattern of similarities could lead. the end of the third trial, prior to korekiyo’s execution, is the scene where everything comes together and his role as himiko’s foil is made clear. it’s an important scene for his character, obviously, with all the reveals packed into it. perhaps even the most important. it’s also one of the most important scenes for himiko.
after voting time, we get into the reveal of korekiyo’s motives. at first, it’s a pretty standard format — him addressing the group, with everyone getting a chance to chime in here and there. every blackened in the series does this. throughout, the focus of the conversation begins to narrow. this also happens pretty much every time — the blackened starts off by explaining the details relevant to everyone about why they did what they did, and then it becomes more personal. everyone else is still present, but the conversation is mostly with just one or two people. generally, these people are the protagonist and the person closest to the blackened.
individual trials have slight variations, of course, but this loose pattern tends to hold true. ishimondo, kuzupeko, hinanami, saimatsu, kaimaki...just to name the most obvious examples, all these very popular ships feature a heart-wrenching exchange before one of them is executed. regardless of how you feel about any given pairing in a romantic sense, those final moments are for very significant bonds. it would feel odd any other way. if you’re about to die, of course you’d most want to talk to someone you care about.
what would it be like if kaede reached out to someone like kokichi instead of shuichi? or what if kaito gave parting words of advice to tsumugi instead of comforting maki? it would feel weird and jarring. the scene would be confusing you instead of making you cry. close relationships are what we expect the focus to be on in those moments.
with that in mind, who is korekiyo primarily addressing once the focus narrows? himiko. it’s not as in your face as some of the other examples i mentioned since there isn’t as much of an established dynamic there, but it fits the pattern all the same. there’s no one else it could be. nobody is anywhere near as connected to him as himiko is. even if you say their only connection is the fact that he killed the two people she was closest to and leave it at that, that’s still far more significant than what he has with the others.
himiko is the first and most receptive to the idea of the seance, and participates most actively in helping him set up (she chooses the stone from the courtyard, chooses the room, and so on). she’s the only person kiyo directly goads and tries to provoke for no strategic reason whatsoever. she’s the one who pushes to hear his explanation when everyone else is content to have him punished as quickly as possible. everyone else is disgusted, but she’s the one who’s truly upset. the tension is palpable. this is the single most important relationship in the room.
hence why himiko is also the recipient of his last anthropology lesson, a piece of what seems to be genuinely well-intentioned advice. it’s directly in response to her saying she can’t accept it. she can’t accept the case coming to an end this way, can’t accept the unfairness of it all. she can’t accept angie and tenko’s deaths, but also, i’d argue, can’t accept korekiyo’s. not like this, anyway. though it’s rooted in anger and frustration, she wants more time.
she needs him, or rather, needs to understand him. she needs closure and acceptance, something that will let her keep going. she ends up having to find it after he’s gone, of course, and acceptance isn’t something that can be given anyway, but in some sort of scenario where he lived longer, she wouldn’t be able to leave him alone regardless. she’d be constantly digging and provoking, trying to get something out of him that would fill that void.
on some level, i think korekiyo recognizes that, and recognizes at least a few of their similarities. his morals are skewed, but he’s not a malicious person when he doesn’t feel he has to be. he doesn’t set out with the goal of hurting anyone. that’s just collateral damage. i don’t think he’d have any desire to make someone suffer the way he did, beautiful though it might be. so why not help her a little, offer a bit of guidance?
in his own way, he’s trying to teach her and reassure her. this really hammers home the contrast between their characters. the core traits that he serves as her foil for are coping mechanisms, especially related to death. he’s the dark, the wrong path that himiko must find the strength not to choose. what better way to emphasize that than essentially having him tell her so? he gives her his answer, all the tools that he feels she needs in order to come up with her own, and then leaves it to her. others can watch and advise, but himiko has to make a choice by herself.
bonus notes, or ‘i held back for 6k words, we’re shipping now’
if you got this far, thank you for reading! i hope it was thought-provoking and did more to show why i feel that their characters make each other stronger and are so deeply intertwined. if you want to stop here, that’s cool, i know this is a longass blog. but if you stick around, i have a few more casual/loosely related thoughts that didn’t make it into the main blog. a lot of them are more ship-oriented and/or fic inspo, so if any give you an idea you want to play around with, go for it.
(tho if anyone actually does use any specific ideas of mine, a link back to this post would be cool of you)
- they’re uniquely positioned to understand each other and work thru their trauma. i think any sort of understanding or tenderness from himiko would mean way more than from anyone else bc of all those connections. any kind of bond formed from seeing those similarities and just. being able to see each other as they truly are would be so special
- it’s not an ‘easy’ ship and that’s part of the appeal. it’s not simple or effortless. there’s always trauma and emotional baggage to work through. there’s always two different sets of walls that need to be taken down, even in non-killing game settings. there’s conflict and difficulty and gray morals and that’s some of the beauty of it. it takes work and determination to create something healthy and nurturing out of that and i think that’s what makes enemies to friends to lovers type dynamics so fun in general. the happiness at the end feels earned.
- kiyo calls himiko’s magic show fun during the ch2 investigation and that makes my heart warm ok? we stan supporting each other’s passions. relatedly, the singular dirty joke he makes in the entire game is directed at her and i just think that’s a fun little note
- himiko having to go past kiyo’s lab every single time she went to and from angie’s...maybe once or twice she stopped and they talked about magic or smth
- himiko is generally pretty expressionless at first, and obv korekiyo’s expressions are mostly hidden by his mask so like?? one of them seeing the other smile for the first time or smth small like that, and realizing that it’s okay to open up a little bit and nothing bad will happen? p l e a s e someone write a fic of that or i’ll have to just do it myself
- i tend to see them both as being simultaneously touch-starved and kinda avoidant of physical contact w most people so like,,, them eventually trusting each other enough to get that comfort? it kinda ties back to my point abt them being uniquely important/significant to one another. i don’t believe korekiyo needs to be ‘redeemed’ either to be a good character in general or to be ‘deserving’ of himiko, but redemption arcs are good shit sometimes, and she’d be an ideal person to help him w that in a setting where she’s already learned those lessons abt growth herself
- nothing says ‘maybe i cared about you’ like ‘your death was the catalyst for me crying so hard i passed out and didn’t wake up until the next morning’
- i thought nobody rly realized/talked abt them being foils (& i still stand by the fact that it’s not talked abt Enough), but literally today 6/6 i saw someone call kiyo himiko’s foil in the comment section of one of lucahjin’s videos on youtube & that’s what made me finally finish this fucking blog so i happily stand corrected

ANGIE YONAGA
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Tumblr media
Okay, so this is a megapost about why I absolutely love the potential and idea of Angie, but explain my creative differences with Kodaka, who absolutely butchered her. I feel like I should at least put something about how Angie needs to be a bit more appreciated in the DR community, as absolutely batshit crazy she is.
In this post, I’ll divide things into Good (Things I really like about angie in general), Ugly (things that are probably true about Angie, or things that would be changed if i were in charge-- these things are often misunderstood.), and BAD (things that i would remove about Angie all together cause there’s no circumstances that it would be okay, or even feasible someone would do stuff like that (even Angie))
More Under the cut!
THE GOOD
Her unhealthy piety to Atua
I’ll get the elephant in the room out of the way. I do like that she is overly obsessed with the Divine way rather than her own way, and can’t tell the divide between her own wants and her deity’s wants. It adds a potential for self discovery, and learning herself so that she can grow as a character, potentially.
Her overall craziness and how things are on her island
Some people find Angie a bit jarring about her character, but i find it pretty endearing, kind of like how people view Harley Quinn-- Different, but in Angie’s case its on a more benevolent level. I always liked how she has a different idea from the rest of the cast on how to do things, and she may have unorthodox methods, but she comes to the same conclusion as everyone else. She is always on the same page, but came to that end in a totally weird manner. Her island’s alleged ways and the lack of knowledge about things allow for a fantasy-like culture where blood sacrifices are made via truck every monday and wednesday, and there are plants that are hard to tell if they’re actually animals. This leads to a variety of Cultures-- but i’ll get to the barbaric portrayal in a sec
the way she thinks she’s cute.
She thinks she’s cute, probably because she was cute on her island’s standards, so she kept it up for the attention.
THE UGLY
How one-note Angie is
I will say that Angie’s “Atuaism” is very one-note in the game. Like, when I wrote as Angie, I delved into how lonely she felt, how her island functioned (if it did), and how she became so high and mighty in her own village. Did she rise to that point of power? Was she elected as the Oracle of the island against her will, and was brainwashed into being the cult leader? (Think Natural Harmonia from Pokemon Black and White.) We don’t really know, but the way I wrote angie is that it was a role forced upon her, and she was very lonely as no one was allowed to interact with “her purity”. That would some add some interesting twists to her character!
Blood Sacrifices and the Cult
She says that on her island, there are blood sacrifice rituals. However she did mention it was a “teensy bit” of blood. This could result as a harmless dose- no more than one would donate to the Blood Drive. Otherwise, how would she allow the people of her own island to live? Its a bit too chaotic to function if people gave large amounts of blood and died doing so.
Also, she does mention the fate of someone who eventually became a sacrifice. It could be inferred that she requested it-- but i personally think that since it is a cult mentality, her island took it upon themselves to act for her-- even if she doesn’t condone it, as form of an extremist group. Angie wasn’t in a place to actually punish them every time, so she would do the “7 generation curse” thing and unfortunately turn them loose. Angie was a figurehead, probably. That’s How I chose to see it, anyway, and I wish they werent so flaw-crazy with Angie.
Brainwashing in Ch.3 , pt 1
This one was more that she felt she couldn’t get everyone to cooperate. She knew her place, and began to brainwash everyone in the cast. She mentioned that she saw her religion as “you’ll come around eventually” kind of thing, and wouldn’t force it.  The forced conversion here, was only because she knew everyone wasn’t on board. She probably would snap everyone out of it to live their lives as they want to if they were to get out because no one wanted to participate, through death or not. She also may have wanted to call Monokuma out on his bluff that he’d murder everyone if there was no murder. (as we know as the audience, would be a very short and unfulfilling show). She had everyone’s best interest in mind, not above hers tho, and did it in the most unorthodox way possible. I like that.
THE BAD
Non-Consensual sexuality
does this need to be said? there was no reason that had to be written. and for Angie to fall for someone who said “no”? That’s EXTREMELY shallow, even for angie. NEXT--
Brainwashing in Ch. 3, pt. 2
Now, how is hugging someone and preying on their weaknesses actual IMMEDIATE Brainwash? Like, I get it, preying on weaknesses can get someone on board... but when it comes to religion, people have a thing called a will. Gonta might join, because his will is weaker and he can be fooled, but Himiko? Kiibo? its not feasible. They know when somethings fishy and not easily fooled (yes, even Himiko).  The only reason brainwashing was there because of plot progression. That’s it. if it weren’t for that, i’d ditch it. You can originally tell that Kodaka wanted Angie to be the murderer at some point, but still wanted her to be seen in a worse and worse light. Its terrible. I hate it.
The fact that Angie has no legacy
After Chapter 3-- there was hardly any feeling toward Angie being dead. Most people were traumatized by tenko, and they didn’t know that they sent her to her death. But news flash-- Angie died too. She was a person! Who died! Who tried getting everyone to a better place, and NO ONE recognizes that? all of the student council said “oh, she’s not invincible, guess i was wrong lol” and never mention Angie till the very very end, along with everyone else. I get that no one wanted to  mourn for her, but it could at least have an impact greater than that, especially for her legit followers. However, Himiko’s relationship to Tenko afterward is honestly off-putting, because of how obsessive Tenko was, and Himiko said “no. never. leave me alone.”. for her to be like “TENKO I MISS U BB” is off putting, putting it lightly. I do ship those two, but only if kodaka didn’t put his grubby hands on the duo, including Angie.
Well, that was my rant, feel free to reblog if you want, I just love Angie and no one can convince me to stop goodnight :)

From the Peko post what other thing would you change in Sdr2?
okay third round, this time we don’t write a 10 paragraph essay dkfnskxnsknc
so as much as i love nagito being absolutely off the rails, i think it’d be interesting to see him be a little more grounded? like he’s more shady and subtly manipulative instead of openly encouraging people to kill him and faking bomb threats. (he does both but the extremes tend to overshadow the subtlety imo.) also i just wanna see him interact with the rest of the cast more. i know logically it makes more sense for people to be creeped out and avoid him but i’m biased and adore chaotic interactions, which with an eccentric character like nagito, is basically every interaction. and i want more of him just. being himself. especially if that revolves around him letting loose with the sass bc ch4 was literally the funniest chapter no i don’t take criticism <3 /j
(jic anyone says something, i do realize his extremity is essential to his character i’m just spitballing here lmao)
other than that, i think it’d be cool if hiyoko were a survivor? maybe in ch3, she gets infected with the vulnerable disease or something? mahiru could still be alive and she’d protect hiyoko from being killed by mikan and get herself killed instead. hiyoko runs off with a non-lethal injury that puts her out of commission until the trial, where she jumps to accusations but gets brushed off because of mikan’s alibi with hajime. after the execution, i imagine she’d get a scene where she kinda breaks down, similar to himiko in v3 ch3. i heard she was originally meant to be a survivor and get more development and the part of my monkey brain dedicated to mean characters said oh worm?????
i also would have loved to see sonia be a blackened. it would make most sense if there were a motive video, but if not, maybe in ch4, she realizes that there’s no way out of the funhouse besides following along with monokuma and decides that she’ll be the one to kill. she could either choose to help gundham and take the fall for him or form her own plan, i’m not sure which i like more. but either way, i imagine she wouldn’t be the one you have to do the panic talk with, i think it would actually be kazuichi trying to defend her.
also, in the blackened sonia timeline, i’d love for gundham to be a survivor. i kinda wonder how differently he and kazuichi might react seeing as they both cared about sonia in really different ways. gundham seemed to treat her like any other person, while kazuichi idolized her and kinda didn’t really bother to learn about her actual personality. at least from what i remember.
i could probably think of more things that i think would be cool to see but i said i wouldn’t write an essay and i ended up doing that anyway so i’m cutting myself off here skdnsknxsk. i hope my rambling satisfied your curiosity lmao

UR TALENTSWAP DRV3 AU THINGY U GOT GOING ON IS SO SO COOL!!!!!!!!!! TELL ME MORE????? [STARES]
Ok ok so, all the posted content is here, but recently I finished all the talent swaps and basic character roles!
I need to draw or write about them, plus figure out the death order, blackened, etc. but I have the protagonist, antagonist, and mastermind figured out!
anyway I’m gonna put a read more and then put the cast’s new talents here
ill make posts introducing everyone at some point
Korekiyo Shinguji - Detective - Protagonist
Shuichi Saihara - Astronaut
Kaede Akamatsu - Entomologist
Kokichi Ouma - Child Caregiver/Assassin
Angie Yonaga - ???/Adventurer/Survivor
Rantaro Amani - Aikido Master
Ryoma Hoshi - (maid) Butler
Maki Harukawa - Artist
Miu Iruma - Magician
Kaito Momota - Cosplayer
Tsumugi Shirogane - Robot - Audience Surrogate
Kirumi Tojo - (supreme leader) Lie
Gonta Gokuhara - Pianist
Himiko Yumeno - Inventor
Kiibo (forgot the last name) - Anthropologist
Tenko Chabashira - Tennis Pro
I think Rantaro might be the first false protag like Kaede is, but that would technically mean he has to die for the control to switch to Korekiyo and I don’t want to settle on victims yet
Besides that, I think I might make Kaito the antagonist since he opposes Korekiyo originally and I can’t think of anyone else who would be too cliche. Kirumi as the ultimate lie would be too on-the-nose and doesn’t fit her personality, while keeping Kokichi as the antagonist Doesn’t feel right either
Now, the mastermind role seems to fit Kiibo best, because it could be Kaito if he wasn’t the antagonist since he has Tsumugi’s old talent, but with him as the antag already I think Kiibo would make a good plot twist. His role is already switched with Tsumugi, and him being an anthropologist would lend itself well to being the mastermind and revealing the real world. His original character already has an interest in humanity, and him being the mastermind could mean that he wants to study how humanity works in different situations, such as losing memories and being put into a killing game. He could also be interested in the audience’s response to the killing game for anthropological studies.
So.. what do you think? I’m still working through things obviously, but I hope to draw them soon! I already sketched Kaede’s talentswap design once and posted Korekiyo’s (though I might do a haircut to show character growth to parallel Shuichi losing the hat, but I have to figure out how to rewrite their backstories to fit the new ultimates)
