Happy Leap Day, Everyone!! Chapter Ten is FINALLY HERE!!!! Hooray!!

Thank you all so much for your patience. This chapter is the final "Then" chapter, concluding all of the past backstory sections. It is LONG and also tragic. I have been warning people and I will keep warning people, but there's a lot of pain going on in this one. I mean, we all know what's coming, but still. 

But! At long last, everyone can find out how Masaomi and Youji actually met, so I'm very excited for that =D

After this, we just have the epically long concluding Chapter (11) and then an epilogue, which will probably be posted at the same time, unless I decide not to for some reason. But at any rate, WE ARE FINALLY ALMOST AT THE END. Oh gosh, thank you so much to everyone who has been following this story.

Chapter Eight is up!!! Apologies for the wait, dear friends, but I have been very grateful for all your comments, kudos and support!

As a head's up, this particular backstory chapter spans several years, so there's a lot of time jumps going around between the paragraphs. I was wondering if I needed to try and mark where the time skips were happening, but ultimately decided not to (largely because I didn't want to have to figure out exactly how time passes...) so I hope it is clear enough in the narrative where it happens. Apologies ahead of time if that is confusing!

I am very excited for this chapter, because there are Things That Happen that I think will be very illuminating for Things That Are Happening in the present story line. So! I hope you enjoy! =D

(This is HinaYou related, I promise!) So my uncle pined after his now-wife for 8 years, being friends with her, and after that she admitted it wasn't so platonic and they dated for 4, then married. At the wedding, the rabbi started off with "We are all so pleased to be at this wedding of this couple so in love... some in love for longer than others" and we all lost it at this absolute roast my uncle got from his rabbi at his own wedding. So I was thinking, I bet this happened with HinaYou too.

Hahaha that is amazing, friend, thank you for sharing!!! 😊 That is absolutely a thing that happened at Hinami and Youji's wedding. It's for sure something Masaomi would have said, had Masaomi gone, but in his absence I'm sure Michiru said it.

I was listening to "I'll Be Good" and all I could think of was MasaShi and how Shiori impacted and is still impacting Masaomi's growth as a person to this day and I almost cried while driving home. It made curious what, if any, ship songs do you have for the Fiercesome Foursome?

Such good timing, thanks friend!! Since I was just asked about some of my MasaYou songs, I was thinking that I also had some songs for the others =D

Just as a note, how I tend to pick songs for characters/ship dynamics is largely dependent on what I was listening to at the time I was writing the story. If I sat down and thought about all the songs that I know that would work for these characters/ship dynamics, I would probably have a lot more to the playlist! But otherwise, most of the songs get associated with characters are because I was listening to them at the time. Lyrics don't always play a factor, either, sometimes it's just the beat.

So, for Hinami and Youji, I had "Life Less Ordinary" by Carbon Leaf and "Budapest" by George Ezra.

Hinami and Shiori: "Nights" by Snow tha Product feat W. Darling

Shiori's (or possibly a Shiori and Youji character song) was "Yellow Flicker Beat" by Lorde (actually the acapella version by Psalm 100, but you know, either way.)

And Hinami's character song is "Giants" by Neoni.

There are a couple others that I have for these sets of characters in a completely different setting =D But I'll hold off on those ones.

Chapter Six is up!! I know I keep saying this and I really shouldn't be setting up expectations, but it really is my personal favorite chapter in the whole story, so I'm super excited that it's up!

Juuuust a couple things to note: please pay attention to the tags for this chapter! Most of the tags are mentions, and not graphic or anything like that, but I felt it important to warn for it just in case.

ALSO I am an idiot and I can't do math, I have mentioned this before, yeah? Because I am so bad at math. But apparently, somehow when I was writing these chapters, and even after I was typing them up, I somehow did not notice that I SKIPPED TWO chapters when I was numbering things. Like, I straight up went from writing Chapter Six to somehow writing Chapter Nine? And I am not sure how I did that...

So I have updated the chapters on ao3 accordingly, so that it now reads there's 12 (eleven plus an epilogue) instead of 14. No one need to be alarmed! This story is still as massive as it ever was.

Although I might split up some of the later chapters. Which would bring things back to 14. Ignore me. At any rate, one day, I will learn how to count.

Anyhoo. Chapter Six!! So excited to have arrived at chapter six!! Other OCs you have all come to know get to make their appearance, as well as others you have not met yet but have been mentioned before. SO EXCITED!!

do you think what would have happened if Youji never got out of Iwatobi? Assuming that Masaomi didn't get killed by his grandfather, how would a MasaYou first meeting go in that circumstance? On that matter, the HinaYou first meeting would probably be really interesting too in that circumstances

Oooh fascinating question, anon-friend! Hmm. So my headcanon for Youji, which is something I explore in other universes I write Youji in, is that he would always eventually be a dissenter to his early conditioning. While he attributes being kicked out of his family to their homophobia (and to a certain extent, he’s right) I think there was always friction between him and his brothers and parents because he was always questioning what he was told was right. The Legacy is very dependent on tradition and things being Exactly One Way forever, and Youji is always the kind of person who goes, “OK, but, consider this: what if it wasn’t that one way.”

So I think even if he had gone through the Ceremony, he still would eventually break ties with his family, although he might have left on his own terms instead of being almost-murdered.

Which means, I don’t think his meeting Hinami or Masaomi would be very different, except that Youji would *know* he’s not a normal human. So maybe he would have been more reserved with them?

Hahaha without going into spoilers for what I have planned for the Magpie Chronicles, but, this is a concept that sorta gets explored in the Magpie Chronicles. =D

“Wait, wait, let me get this straight, you just hand over authority of your whole world to any old human who wanders through a closet and ends up here? What kind of system of government is that?”

Masaomi feels like this is a strange thing to get hung up on, considering he is currently talking to a faun, who he is pretty sure must be some kind of hallucination.

“They’re usually younger than you too, if that helps. I think our last King was like, twelve years old,” Youji the talking hallucination says.

“You know, that doesn’t. That doesn’t help at all. What the fuck. Do you not believe in self-governance? You just automatically subjugate yourselves to humankind? What kind of colonial bullshit is this?”

“Well, we also have Aslan.”

“Is Aslan an adult?”

“He’s a lion.”

“Of course he is.”

Youji scrunches up his nose, which Masaomi finds strangely endearing in a hallucination. “Do you not want to be King?”

“Oh no, I’m definitely going to be King. You people clearly need a whole structural overhaul. This is a very inefficient system.”
