प्यार बसंत है, मासूमियत है, जोश है, बचपना है, नादानी है,सावन की पहली बारिश है, सुबह की जवानी है, शाम की चाय है। प्यार, वो पहला एहसास है जो दिल को खुश सा कर जाता है।

और मोहब्बत ?

मोहब्बत, जनाब, यह वो है जो ठहराव है, जो रात के तमस जैसी गहरी है, जिसमे समझ भी है और जोश भी, इसमें सागर का सुकून है, और आसमान की आज़ादी भी। यह मोहब्बत वो है जो दिल को जज़्बात, ठहराव, और गहरियां दे जाती है।

तो फ़िर इश्क़ क्या है ?

जो प्यार और मोहब्बत के परे जाकर होता है ना, उसको इश्क़ कहते हैं। यह हर टूटे दिल को होता है, और जब होता है ना तो बहुत ज़बरदस्त होता है।

It's ridiculous how the word for today and tomorrow is the exact same thing in Hindi

I don't get how a language that has more than seventy synonyms for words like 'moon' can struggle with making up separate words for 'today' and 'tomorrow'

I've been low-key studying Hindi for 2 weeks now*. I'm at unit 4 on Duolingo and try to do at least 1 exercise every day to keep my streak up.

So, minimal effort.

Today I felt a bit discouraged because this is supposed to be an Indo-European language but it sure doesn't feel like it! They use different vowels to characterize gender! I can't even read Devanagari! And how long will it take me to learn? And then to learn how to actually use the language? It's impossible to do with minimal effort!

And then I realized that two weeks ago I didn't know anything and now look at me! I know how to say apple! I can recognize the words "Neha" and "I" and "boy" and "girl" both by sound and written in Devanagari script! I can reorder words so that they form the sentence "Peter reads a book"! I can kind of sing-along to some bits of Hindi songs I like.

This is not nothing. If I asked someone on the street to do that, they would not be able to do it. But I can! In 2 weeks I've already learned way more than I realize.

And, you know, no one is forcing me to do this. I don't have an exam to prepare for and I'm not trying to move to India. This is a hobby. I don't have to get a good grade.

I don't know for how long I'll continue studying Hindi, if I'll ever become fluent or if one day I'll decide to raise my effort from minimal to "moderate" or "all in".

But I find it fun right now and the time will pass anyway and slow but steady does bring results. That's all that matters.

*yes, it's because of Hindi movies and Kajol and SRK, leave me alone

Quick PSA because I keep hearing this misconception when I tell people about one of my conlangs:

“Creole language…” doesn't mean “language that's related to and/or mostly French.” When people who don't share a language live together and are forced to just figure out how the heck to communicate on their own, they mush their languages together into a simplified hybrid language called a “pidgin.” Creoles are what happens when babies are taught a pidgin as their first language, and those babies rapidly grow the pidgin into its own separate, full-fledged, stable language with its own rules (I feel like I'm giving a linguistic “birds and the bees” talk, rofl).

From what I can tell, the word “creole,” itself, comes from French (and Spanish) because the phenomenon was first documented in places where part-French (and/or Spanish) creoles formed, but a creole language absolutely isn't automatically part French (or Spanish). Yes, I do use a little French (and Spanish) in my simulated creole, but I also use like twenty other languages. Please stop assuming I mean I'm making a French spinoff…? 🫤

28.11.23, 1:26 am // i read लालची बंदर (the greedy monkey) on hyplern. it took me about 10 minutes to read 121 words. very slow, but i haven’t read in hindi for a long while, so i’m actually quite proud of how much i’ve retained.

the most difficult sentence i came across, as well as some vocab:

लेकिन बदकिस्मती से सुराख़ इतना छोटा था की वो अपनी मुट्ठी नहीं निकाल सका।

lekin badakismatee se suraakh itana chhota tha kee vo apanee mutthee nahin nikaal saka.

meaning: but unfortunately (due to bad luck), the opening was so small that [the monkey] could not get his fist back out.

मुट्ठी - fist

चट्टान - rock

गेहूँ - wheat

सुराख़ - hole, opening, eyelet, orifice

बदकिस्मती - bad luck, misfortune

अलबत्ता - however

ढीली - loose

लालची - greedy
