I'm looking for more hinny fic recs. I feel like I've read all works from the better known writers in the fandom.

Any chance you might have recommendations for "hidden gem" authors?

I really love this ask, and I have to apologise for taking so bloody long to get to it.

I understand what you mean by ‘better known writers in the fandom’, but I guess even popularity of writers is a pretty subjective thing. Presumably, you mean the likes of Annerb, Northumbrian and Floreatcastellum, and I do love all their stories. I also love the stories from Hinny writers @fightfortherightsofhouseelves, @seriouslysam8, @breaniebree, @thedistantdusk, @secretkeeper13, @stuckwith-harry, @clarensjoy (I’m sure you’re well across most or all of these authors), and no doubt many more that I’ll think of two seconds after I post this. 

Aside from the authors I just mentioned, here are some of my favourite Hinny stories (I know you asked more specifically for authors, and for hidden gems, but I had too much fun going through my bookmarks). Hopefully there’ll be something in this list that you haven’t come across yet :)

She disregarded the tightening in her chest and the fluttering in her stomach when they were together, noticing that he never stopped noticing her, anticipating her desires and giving them to her without her having to ask. And she refused to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t only about sex — not for her, and maybe not for him either. And that’s, of course, how she ended up here: huddled over a cauldron in the bathroom of her tiny flat, trying to work up the courage to prick her finger and pinch a drop of blood into the potion.

Would You Be My Little Quarantine? by @celtics534 Moving was always stressful, but to be placed in a nationwide lockdown only a few weeks after moving was just too much for Ginny to think about. At least she had a fit neighbor keep her company... from two meters away, of course.

These two are WIPs that I love, but they aren't regularly updated. But I'm sharing them in the hope that if they get enough love, perhaps it will help to motivate the writers.

When the Party’s Over by Mintsea (be sure to check the warnings for this one) After ten years, golden couple Head Auror Harry Potter and Holyhead Harpies Vice-Captain Ginny Weasley unexpectedly broke up, leaving the Weasley family and gossip columns reeling. The Discreet Gentleman's Connection by pluto (gayrights420) [Drarry, E, 80.4k] 🌼🔥 I had the absolute pleasure of beta-ing for this fic, so when I say it is amazing, it truly is just that. Fast burn on the smut via Floo sex, slow burn on the in-person falling in love. Satisfying in all the best possible ways.

2. A fic that made me laugh

AITA for being "obsessed" with my childhood nemesis? by @rainstormradish [Drarry, M, 4.3k] 🌼📲 Draco on a reddit forum is hilarious just on its own, but the banter and formatting really bring this fic to life. Amazingly creative, had me in stitches!

3. A comfort fic

The Eighth Tale by @letteredlettered [Drarry, E, 12.0k] 💔⏳ An oldie but a goodie. I constantly find myself coming back to this fic and having my mind blown every single time. Time travel timey-wimey angst.

4. A fic with art

Dating Draco - A Visual Game by @itsphantasmagoria [Drarry, M, Video Game] 🌼🎮 This is a fic in video game form!! Amazing art and lovely story where YOU get to make the choices for Drarry's happily ever after.

5. A favorite series

The Journal of Dreadful Things by @lilbeanz [Drarry, G, 112k, WIP] 🌼📖 Hilarious, witty, AND COMES WITH ART!! Lilbeanz draws and writes a wonderfully delightful series starting from Draco's First Year. His characterization had me in hysterics. Book 4 is starting soon!

Moonstruck by @prettyremus [Wolfstar, E, 3.8k] 🔥🐺 Found this gem while scrolling through the werewolf smut tag (don't judge me). I love the switch in dynamic with Sirius taming Remus's wolf through, ahem, rough sex.

7. An unreliable narrator fic

Sea of White by @dividawrites [Harrymort, E, 8.6k] 🔥🤍 Deliciously hot, creepy, and strangely sweet. Love their dynamic here, the unrestrained lust. Harrymort "die" and lose their memories, so, of course, then they bang.

8. A fic that made me cry

Far Apart, Far Away by @unmistakablyoatmeal [Hinny, minor Drarry, T, 1.6k] 💔💍 Infidelity angst has never been this good. I love the layers of emotion in this fic. Quick punchy sections that really pulled me in.

9. A Muggle(?) AU fic

Pleasant Hope by @ac1d6urn, @sinick [Snarry, E, 41.6k] 💔⛪️ Pastor Severus!! The angst, pining, and self-discovery in this fic is superb! I love the interwoven magic and detailed world-building of this little town.

The Last Trial of Peter Pettigrew by @sleepstxtic [Prongstail, M, 20.8k] 💔 🐀 Holy moly, this fic!!!! Is this my new favorite fic?? Possibly. The concept is brilliant, so creative and nuanced. The Peter character study using outsider perspectives is genius. Seamlessly balances canon and new scenes.

11. A pre-canon fic

Careless by @tax-onomic [Luther, E, 1.5k] 🔥🪞 Lucius/Arthur my beloved rare pair!! I am captain of the Luther ship, and Tax's fic hits all the right spots. The pining, the sniping, the prickly personalities with emotional vulnerability underneath! And all in the middle of a hot smut scene. Perfect.

12. A canon-compliant fic

Scottish by thepadfoots [Chedric, G, 749] 💔🌟 Lovely Cho character study focused around her Asian identity and the boy she loved.

13. A fic rated G (more like T though)

Lion-Hearted Girl by MinnieQuill (odainath) [Minmione, G, 4.5k] 💔🦁 I know the large age gap might scare some, but their relationship feels very organic in this fic. The setting is grim, but there is always hope in the darkness!

14. A fic rated T

You're So Vane by @patriceavril [Romelina, T, 6.8k] 🌼💄Romilda is so delightfully characterized, I was smiling through the entire fic. Angelina is the perfect foil (and love interest) to Romilda's attentions.

15. A rare pair fic (less than 2000 fics on AO3)

Snakeskin by @cntrl15 [Bellastoria, E, 3.7k] 🔥👠 Talk about a rare pair! Astoria/Bellatrix only has 2 tagged fics on AO3: this fic and the drabble I wrote based on it. But read this fic, and you'll see why I felt the need to write more in this universe.

16. A fest fic

Master of None by @nanneramma [Snormac, G, 5.5k] 🌼🧘 Severus is so wonderfully cranky, and Cormac is fine AF. The surprise pairing of 2023 that I never knew I needed and now I'm obsessed with!

17. An under-rated fic

Sun, Shadow, Shade by @naomijameston [Snuna, G, 700] 🌼☀️ Post-war fluff. Sunshine Luna is the perfect match for sullen Snape. A short and sweet fic for this underrated ship.

18. A canon-divergent fic

but somebody's gotta do it by nocturn [Pangulus, T, 920] 😄🧟‍♂️ This fic will make you say WTF but also huh, okay that totally works. The concept is WILD but Lyra executes it wonderfully. Pansy drags Regulus out of the inferi lake and they flirt a little while he gets de-corpsified lol.

19. A dark fic

In his embrace by @loneamaryllis [Snarrymort, het!Snarry, E, 48k] ⚡️👀 Dark and dirty but so so good. A Voldemort Wins AU where fem!Harry is taken as prisoner. Snape's mindset as he tries to save her (and is forced to rape her) is so twisted and mesmerizing. Mind the tags!

20. A thought-provoking fic

Icarus by @thistlecatfics [Millvansy, M, 20.0k] 💔🍾 War trauma, addiction, codependency! This fic is messy with emotions but has a strong, beating heart underneath. I am in love with Parvati as she deals with Pansy's addiction and Millicent's denial — three beautiful, imperfect girls.

21. A holiday fic

A Time, Dark and Divine by @moonflower-rose [Dronarry, E, 17.0k] 🔥⛱ HOLY FREAKING FUCK!! The sexual tension in this fic is off the freaking charts. Drarry seducing Ron while on vacation in Portugal. Sign me the fuck up!

Through the Middlegame by @sandervansunshine [Astoria & Peter, T, 6.6k] 💔♜ Devastating, heart-wrenching, tragic. 10000% would recommend. Kylee has already heard me screaming in the servers about this fic. If I could get a fic tattooed straight onto my brain, this would be it.

Severus/ Petunia. Explicit.

The unexpectedly tender and intimate romance between Severus and Petunia - post the events of First War- tops this list. Maria has a way of writing care, intimacy with such loving attention to detail, it blows me away in all of her work. This also has a sequel!

Summary:

1981 was not Petunia's year. The day before New Year's Eve, determined to make a fresh start of it, she straps Harry and Dudley into the car and flees north--only to hit into the biggest snowstorm she's ever seen in her life. Grief-stricken and dazed by his pivot from Death Eater to teacher, Severus Snape spends his holiday far from everyone, wandering aimlessly through the snow. The last thing either of them wanted was their paths to collide, but when Petunia gets stuck in the snow, they'll get stuck with each other.

2. Not bright or noble, but almost sublime by @yletylyf

Severus/Sirius raising Harry. Explicit.

I remember talking to Lety when we connected in Snirius fandom: "Where are the fluffy fics? Where are the raising Harry fics?" Of course, Snirius fandom as a whole is interested in the tension and delicious angst of Sirius and Severus together, often veering to darker territories - so it was a relief when Lety started writing this! A very fun Snirius raising Harry story.

Summary:

On that fateful Halloween night in Godric's Hollow, Severus Snape and Sirius Black unite in a common cause: find the Secret-Keeper who betrayed their best friend. Or: A temporary truce turns into something much more.

3. The Dog and Deer Detective Agency by @artemisia-black

Sirius/OFC.

If you ever wanted to see Sirius Black in a noir-esque mystery, this is your fic. Not only is Artemisia good at building the luxuriant atmosphere for the foreboding story, this is a good exploration of Sirius in an alternate universe without threat of Voldemort. He is a freer version of the man you might see in canon, but still has that family baggage. There is also tons of baby Harry and Sirius cuteness (yes, that is my catnip- Harry and Sirius are my favourite dynamic in canon)

Summary:

Set in an AU where Voldemort is never born. James and Sirius are both the best of friends and brilliant wizards, and not wanting to be tied down to a 9-to-5, they founded a detective agency. A year in, they have had a steady business from scorned spouses until one day a woman arrives and draws them into a sinister plot in the Scottish Highlands.

No one gets the romantic comedy #vibe of Half Blood Prince quite like Incalculable Power. This fic is special among her work because she captures an experience lot of queer women go through - an intense codependent friendship that is just waiting to edge into romance.

Summary:

The High Priestess, reversed. Trust your intuition. Your true self is waiting; she refuses to be contained for much longer.

Orchards by @whinlatter

Harry/Ginny.

Whinlatter dropped into the fandom with a 17k fic written about the summer Harry and Ginny fell in love, and it was utterly beautiful tribute to first loves, Harry, Ginny and also, the third character: the orchard. Even when the fic weaved in the grief Harry is still dealing with and references the war years, it is infused with hope for the future.

Summary:

The orchard is a wild, thousand-flower, crumpled-gate, fall-down-fence sort of place, where things grow that you’ve never asked for, that you’d never expect. The summer of ’96, the story of something flowery he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow.

If I wanted to read Hinny FF, where should I start?

Ok, I am absolutely terrible at keeping track of the stuff that I read so the authors that I'm going to suggest you can be sure are worthy of being checked out for the simple fact that I remember them.

@floreatcastellumposts has some really great hinny works (all canon-compliant) and honestly, you should give a read to also the non-hinny stuff, her Hugo Granger-Weasley is amazing. In regards to hinny, I'd especially advise her version of what happens after their first kiss. I've always wanted to write that moment but since I've read her version I feel like I would just write the same thing, it's absolutely perfect, 100% canon.

@seriouslysam8 has one of the best hinny interpretations out there, some of her works revolve around hinny, and some have a very strong presence of this ship. Her universe is nearly canon complaint, with some AU details here and there. Her ootp hinny missing moments are masterpieces and one of my personal drugs, her adult hinny fics are extremely good. Brontide in particular is my favorite, not only for the hinny there, her way of describing addiction is excellent. I don't necessarily think Harry would have still so many problems in his adult life (her stories have kidnappings, millions of injuries, and so on) but it's very entertaining to read.

@gryffindormischief is an extremely good choice too. Especially if you want to see a peaceful adult!Harry. This author has an excellent understanding of these two characters.

@secretkeeper13 is an absolute genius. The Craig Clarke collection is one of my favorite things on earth.

@starlingflight is another genius. You need to read Fallin' All In You and Everything I Wanted. If you like hinny it's absolutely unacceptable to not have read those masterpieces.

@annerbhp is a very well-known hinny author. Her slytherin!Ginny series is quite famous but I still have to finish it so I'm just putting it here because I know a lot of people love it. Now, on the other hand, works by this author that I actually finished reading and so can 100% recommend are all her one-shots. My personal favorite is Gone was any trace of you. I've read it more times than I can count.

@startanewdream is one of my favorites. Well, these are all my favorites really. Her jily!lives universe is one of my only joys in life. Her hinny is spot on.

There are a lot of great hinny authors and fics but these are the ones that I've gone back to millions of times, whose works I never get tired of re-reading. Even if the possibility that I'm forgetting someone whose works I love is very strong, I really am a mess when it comes down to remembering this kind of thing.

Little note: your standards for fics after reading the works of these authors are going to become extremely high. I warned you.

💘 A fic you couldn't stop reading once you started

pluto by @bikelock28. i think i read all 80-something chapters (at the time) in, like, a weekend. it was the first remadora fic i actually really vibed with and parts of it still definitely live rent-free in my head.

😭 A fic that ripped your heart out (but it hurt so good)

i have two recent ones for this

safe in the fold by @welsh-green, a scene between molly and harry around the first postwar christmas. it's such a loving look at that relationship and the way molly and harry are both surrogates for each other, especially in the wake of fred's death. her molly and the way she grieves in this story reminded me so much of my own mother

beasts by @whinlatter. i'm not all the way caught up on this fic yet but the end of chapter 5 made me sit there with my heart dripping down the inside of my chest for a few minutes. i won't spoil anything other than to say it's ginny weasley's POV of the first postwar year of hogwarts. it's such a great fic in general, really sophisticated and full of all these beautiful character moments, you should just read it.

Harry tucks the flaps of his coat around his chest tightly, wishing the bone-chilling cold was due to the frost crystallizing the willow trees and not a different ache entirely. Shaking his head, he balances the fruitcake in his hands before taking in the melancholy around him. Once leaves of glittering gold leave lonely branches in their wake.

Every Christmas, down by the park, he thinks of her. He can't help it; she's everywhere.

He watches a child pelt a snowball in the direction of a friend, and she's there with him, sneaking up from behind, yanking his hood down to shove the iciest of chunks down his back. Laughing as he yelps. Shrieking as he chases her with a snowball twice the size of hers.

He watches a teenager pull a dress from a gift bag, and she's next to him again, hissing at him to quiet down, you ponce. Smacking him when her mum's yells echo outside the Burrow to come back this instant and apologize to Aunt Muriel for ditching the pageant and taking off with him instead. Switching her heels to sneakers. Lifting her dress to match his running speed. Smirking in restaurants over cheap burgers and nosy bystanders judging their audacity.

He watches an older couple hold hands while their kids play football, and she's right there again, pulling him under the bleachers, the rush from winning the game still buzzing in his veins. Cupping his jaw and lighting his insides on fire with her searing kiss. Fluttering her eyelashes and waiting for his reaction. Sighing contentedly when he drags her body against his, sunshine tingling their flushed skin.

He watches the reflection of the moon against the lake, and she's next to him once more, eyes shining with tears under the starlit sky. Shaking her head, chin wobbling as he asks her one last time to stay. Whispering you know I can't, and truthfully, he does. But when they kiss again, he recalls all the ways he's been hurt in the past—before he knew what real pain felt like.

A camera flash lights up his vision; he turns his attention to its harsh reality.

This time, he watches a family say cheese, and she's not there with him, not there to hold him in the quiet of the night. And now it's him listening to her on the news, stunned—but not surprised—by the way she blazes through the great fame of the football world. Buying magazines that praise her influence in the sports industry. Mind drifting when he sees a little girl wearing a kit with her name on it.

Hollowing when she never returns home for the holidays. Numbing when he grows used to it.

In the dark of that Christmas night, he sinks it all in—for the last time.

Tonight, he will lay his flickering hopes to rest. It's been five years too long. She won't come back.

Stepping onto the final landing of the Burrow, Harry adjusts the fruitcake and knocks on the door. He forces a grin as it swings open.

But the shine of his best mate's blue eyes is different from the cheer Harry's accustomed to from the Weasleys. Surprised the cake made it intact, eh? the words lying dead on his tongue…for Ron steps aside and clears the path for Harry, and his heart—his treacherous heart—absolutely stops, and it's all it can take for him to breathe, all the atoms of the air no longer existing in this very moment… Because, God, it's her, it's really—

"Ginny."

The Christmas lights in the park, the glistening snow, the shining moon, they were never really there, were they, ever since she left.
