Rest in peace Robbie of Sly & Robbie Robert Warren Dale Shakespeare (27 September 1953 – 8 December 2021) was a Jamaican bass guitarist and record producer, best known as one half of the reggae rhythm section and production duo Sly and Robbie, with drummer Sly Dunbar. Regarded as one of the most influential reggae bassists, Shakespeare was also known for his creative use of electronics and production effects units.  He was sometimes nicknamed "Basspeare". As a part of Sly and Robbie, Shakespeare worked with various reggae artists such as U-Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, Augustus Pablo, Yellowman, and Black Uhuru. His production work also extended beyond the reggae genre, covering various pop and rock artists such as Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Cocker, Yoko Ono, Serge Gainsbourg, and Grace Jones. Coffee Table Book Recommendations for Hip Hop Lovers

Chuck D Presents This Day In Rap & Hip — Hop History

This is an excellent reference book on hip hop. If you ever have to take a class on hip hop I’m pretty sure this is the textbook for that class or at least required reading. The drawings were great but my favorite parts are the blue Chuck D footnotes all over the book. He gives his opinions on trends, issues, legendary artists, etc concerning hip hop. Highly recommend.

Hip Hop Raised Me by DJ Semtex

I loved this book. DJ Semtex did a great job on speaking on hip hop from his perspective and how it influenced his life. The photos in this book are A+

The Rap Year Book — Shea Serrano

I loved this book and learned a lot from it. This book goes in-depth and researches the top rap song of the ear from 1979 to 2014. Shea Serrano did a great job of researching this book and I loved his witty point of view. I also liked how he let other people debate him on his music selections. I loved the footnotes and song dissections. This book is highly recommended.

Honorable Mention — Marvel: The Hip Hop Covers Vol. 1

I enjoyed the book overall. I would have liked for them to provide some commentary on why they chose certain covers, working with the artists, and the creative process behind the book. This book could have been so much more but I felt I should mention it since its aim is the hip hop audience.
