Where Mary Marvel originally got her powers from; it is not the same as her brother, Billy, or Freddy Freeman.
While “grace” and “beauty” are nice, I think she’d have been better served with a dose of invulnerability.  Don’t be mistaken: she was invulnerable, but you wouldn’t know it to look at that list.
This was finally addressed very recently.  Mary lost her Shazam powers at the end of this year’s Lazarus Planet event.  However, because of her heroics and bravery, she was endowed with new powers by a cadre of goddesses, NOT the old wizard Shazam.
Mary’s new Shazam powers are:
S - Selene agility
H - Hippolyta strength
A - Artemis stamina
Z - Zephyrus flight
A - Aurora invulnerability
M - Minerva wisdom

This blog's main blorbos:
Kim Wexler: She needs a sequel!!!
Jimmy McGill: He's just Ken.
William Delos: "I can fix him" becomes very literal.
Dolores Abernathy: 10/10 girlboss. Got to see her revolution through to the end. Morally gray in a way that didn't feel like centrism pulling its punches. No notes. Please teach Kim how to shoot a gun.
Love Quinn: She deserved so much better. A single episode of hearing her unhinged internal monologue was insufficient. I wish she had killed Joe and been the POV for Season 4. Kim's frenemy.
Rose Quartz: A crusader who puts all her friends and family on the line for the "greater good"? If you haven't noticed the theme yet, this is very much a "support women's wrongs" kind of blog.
Ruby+Sapphire/Garnet: She should be Jimmy and Kim's marriage counselor. She should be EVERY ship's marriage counselor!
Elphaba Thropp: Same appeal as Rose Quartz. But she also beat a white supremacist to death with a broom once. That gets her extra points.
Pearl X: Not a star. But a solid addition to the chorus.
Peter (Leigh) Graham: Where do we go from here? The little free will he had has been crushed by a family legacy, and he's the only one left to carry on. These creeps think he's a god; he's just the same scared teenage boy he's always been.
Wheatley: Doesn't really fit in with my current fandoms. But I still love him.
Audrey II: Did I mention I love Faustian bargains?
The Angel of Crockett Island: Did I mention I love Faustian bargains?
Hippolyta Freeman: Actual best-written female character on tv in the past 10 years. Seriously, I love Kim but calling her "best character" is antifeminist, when we have characters like Hippolyta who are getting overlooked.
Letitia Lewis: She's flighty. She doesn't get along with her sister. She likes scifi and mystery. She doesn't resist the call to adventure. She gets knocked up by her sweetheart as the result of magical shenanigans. And by the end, she's one of the few remaining characters who knows how to cast spells. If I was a character in "Lovecraft Country", I'd like to think I'd be Letti. Just please... anyone but Christina!
Adelaide Thomas: I still don't feel like I fully understand this character. But her story speaks to me on a profound level.
Clara Saburova: Has a lot of Elphaba's same "benevolent misanthrope" witchy energy. Not only can she break the fourth wall; I'm pretty sure she knows how to use console commands. Send her off to America to study THE LAW.
Nadia Vulvokov: Misc. failwoman archetype
Oksana Astankova: Misc. failwoman archetype
Judy Gemstone: Misc. failwoman archetype
Sally Reed: Speedrunning these "blonde crime-drama love-interest" tropes.
Dee Reynolds: Misc. failwoman archetype
Turanga Leela: Ponytail? Check! Exposed biceps? Check! Schlub she does care about but she's mostly just keeping around for sex? Check! Confidence exceeding competence? Check! Back and ready for more punching stuff, Ma'am!
Carmella Soprano: Supra.
Skyler White: Res Ipsa.
Daenerys Targaryen: ⚠⚠ Construction Site! Do Not Enter! ⚠⚠ We are still waiting on the autopsy reports. But man, she left a CRATER when she fell off.
Bella Swan: Basically the drip-pan for everything above her.

🔥🔥 about mary <3
🔥 on classic Mary Marvel not being drawn as physically buff as classic Captain Marvel (and how investment in a specific character can lead to stifling discussion):
I have seen Mary Marvel’s visual portrayal as not visibly muscular criticized in an academic context before and at the time I wasn’t really receptive to the idea, but I’ve recently changed my mind on this.
I think that Pre-Crisis Mary can be defended here by pointing out that- whereas Billy transformed into an adult- Mary’s appearance didn’t change between Mary Batson and Mary Marvel, and that that was the same case as Freddy Freeman who- other than losing the crutch- looked the same between Freddy and Junior, therefore she’s not really being treated differently than her male counterparts and therefore this isn’t a sexist decision and isn’t part of a trend of resistance towards drawing female characters in comics with visible muscles.
However, none of this means that Mary can’t be included in a conversation about female superheroes not being drawn as physically buff as their male counterparts with respect to her and Captain Marvel. Same as with Supergirl, who is often drawn as a subtly muscular girl whereas Superman is often drawn as notably, uniquely big, or the very topical She-Hulk, and any other female superhero character that could be defended by pointing to an in-universe reason as to why they look the way that they do. And I think any criticism that’s based around just one of these characters would be incredibly weak and wouldn’t hold up to those in-universe reasons being pointed out. But I don’t think that it’s unreasonable to list them together as examples of this pattern, and I actually think there’s value in using some of these specific characters in that discussion, given that Mary was the first ever female spin-off of a male comic book character and could be considered the direct precursor to Supergirl, who is one of the most famous female spin-offs of a male comic book character.
The reason I bring this up though is that I think that there’s this instinct a lot of fans have to defend their favorite characters against criticism and to see it as an attack on them, and it’s important to me to avoid falling into that because I believe that it limits interesting conversation. I certainly don’t want to be one of those fans who argues that they’re inherently right in a conversation because they have more love for a character than the other person, as though that’s a reasonable metric for the validity of an argument about or interpretation of a story.
🔥 on criticism of Golden Age Mary Marvel’s powers (and the necessity of reading comics to critique them):
Conversely, I think all of the criticism that I’ve seen before of Mary’s Golden Age powers was invalid because of their basis in a cursory understanding of her character that didn’t factor in the vital information of her actual depiction in comics.
When Mary was first introduced in Captain Marvel Adventures (1941) #18 Billy balked at the idea that she would have the same powers as him, asking "How could you say... the word... and be given the powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury? They're all men- and you're a girl!” And so the kids went to talk to the Wizard Shazam who revealed that Mary's powers were actually the Grace of Selene, the Strength of Hippolyta, the Skill of Ariadne, the Fleetness of Zephyrus, the Beauty of Aurora, and the Wisdom of Minerva.
And I think a lot of people learn that and have a knee-jerk reaction to dislike it. And I don’t think it’s unreasonable for someone to be uncomfortable with Mary having had obviously gendered powers like magical grace and beauty. But I also don’t think it’s reasonable to take that information and use it to argue that Mary’s Golden Age comics were sexist without acknowledgment of how her powers were actually portrayed in stories.
Because Golden Age Mary Marvel was just as fast, just as strong, just as invulnerable, et cetera, as Golden Age Captain Marvel. Her solo adventures were not in any way less based in physical action than Cap’s solo adventures were. She was often dismissed by the villains and crooks she fought, who assumed that they weren’t in any trouble because they could easily beat a girl, which was always immediately followed by her absolutely beating them and making fun of them in the process. She explicitly verbally rejected the idea that she could do any less because she was a girl.
And I think that the ultimate message that that sent was the idea of girls and boys being inherently different, but equal in the value of those different strengths. And regardless of whether or not someone personally agrees with that idea, I think that that’s what you would have to either defend or criticize, and not the idea that a girl would inherently have lesser superpowers than a boy, which is what I think people just assume of her stories without reading them.
Which is not to say that anyone who reads the comics would come to the same conclusion that I have, and so anyone who disagrees with me must have not actually read the comics and are discussing them based on just reading a wiki page or something instead. And this is very much not to argue that Mary is inherently a “feminist character”- I don't personally find that metric in evaluating female characters or their stories valuable, let alone interesting, or at least I have yet to see it be done- but to argue that I don’t think classic Mary is an inherently regressive character, or at least I haven't seen it argued that she is in a way that seemed based on an in-depth understanding of her canonical portrayal.
But even Marvel Family fans, who would presumably be familiar with her canonical portrayal, will sometimes in a joking, self-deprecating way say ‘yes… this is the character we like… it was the 40s.’ I'm not ashamed of liking Golden Age Mary Marvel. I think that the reason this happens is that it is just such a cheap shot that it feels hard to argue against, or that people are uncomfortable defending her powers.
Obligatory disclaimer here that not every single Golden Age Mary Marvel appearance didn’t have obviously regressive ideas about gender in them. The worst offender is her story in Wow Comics (1940) #27 which has the truly wack premise of Mary visiting a town that a crook has convinced all the men and women of to switch roles, purportedly for an experiment about gender roles, but which was really so that all of the police officers would be useless women, leaving the town defenseless against his gang, so Mary Marvel has to… fight against breaking gender roles and put everyone back in their proper place.
But this story is really conceptually logically-incompatible in how it portrays women as inherently incompetent as crime fighters yet not only does Mary not have the issues of being too busy gossiping or too scared to be a superhero in any of her other appearances, she doesn’t have it in this one either. She literally stands in for the useless women police and firefighters. So even here there’s something to be discussed, and my issue with the idea of Mary’s powers being inherently bad is that it criticizes her on such a base level without going more in-depth into her depiction that it ultimately shuts down conversation about her.
