🐈 The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa (trans. Philip Gabriel)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
“At that moment, we were without doubt the greatest travelers in the world. And I was the world’s greatest traveling cat.”
Nana the cat, and his human Satoru embark on a cross-country journey to find and meet three people from his past, or so Nana is led to believe. What unfolds is a special trip that will last a lifetime.
I bawled. I’ll just start by saying that reading this story in one sitting, with my beloved Karma by my side, made me cry tears that wouldn’t stop. This is a heart-filling story. The relationship between Satoru and his cat, the relationships they make and revisit on the trip, and the moments that stay with us.
There’s something magical about this book and the way it was narrated by Nana, who had so much to say. Now that I’m done with it, I wish I could read it all over again.

JOMPBPC | December 20 | Set in a country other than yours
Living in Australia makes this prompt a lot easier 😅 most of what I read is set in either USA or a fictional place, so I wanted to take this opportunity to showcase a book set in Japan 🇯🇵🐈‍⬛

As we count up the memories from one journey, we head off on another. Remembering those who went ahead. Remembering those who will follow after. And someday, we will meet all those people again, out beyond the horizon.

Currently Reading: The Goodbye Cat by Hiro Arikawa, translates by Philip Gabriel
I'm a sucker for books about cats, especially translated fiction, just seems to get certain themes across better. This one is about how 7 different cats in all the seasons of the year and our lives as their families, exploring how each cat shows their devotion and love in their own unique ways. Whether that is helping a new father figure out how to parent his new child or staying alive and well the youngest son achieved a good steady job.
Cats are some of my favourite animals, even though I am allergic, I still love them and have help with a few myself.

Today I started to read The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa.
How the cat looks like in my head:
Tumblr media
Who brought the cat home? A tall, lanky young man  who would cry seeing an injured cat, lives alone in an apartment where everything is neat and tidy, has a good intuitive sense of cat language... Still thinking who could fit here... Shouto? Aizawa? Would Shinsou’s room be tidy? Sure Kirishima’s room is not tidy and neat , and he is not lanky. :D

My story will be over soon. But it's not something to be sad about. As we count up the memories from one journey, we head off on another. Remembering those who went ahead. Remembering those who will follow after. And someday, we will meet all those people again, out beyond the horizon.

The two of us were so very, very well matched, so don't you think it was strange we were kept apart from each other?
I wanted to lie in his arms forever.

"If you don't mourn a dead cat properly, then you'll never get over it. Even if you feel able to mourn the death of a cat you've heard nothing about for years, it's a little late to feel truly sad about it, isn't it?"

Currently Reading: The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa, translated by Philip Gabriel
A series of short stories as Satoru navigates trying to find someone who can take in Nana, his cat of five years who he found and helped as a kitten.
This is a really cute set of stories and I'm glad we get a small peak into the lives of Satoru and how he came to have Nana, and his old cat Hachi, who Nana looks like.
Have you read this book? What did you think of it? Or is it something you pick up in this new year?
