How are you? Headcannon question for Black Lagoon: What would happen if Rock succumbed to evil? Him fully embracing the criminal lifestyle? Becoming more and more sadistic? Like a Colonel Kurtz situation, you know the jungle changing/bring out the worst in man? If he became a kingpin? How would the individual crew react? And what would they do? (Apologies if this question has already been asked. Per your instruction I looked through the anon tag, and the Rock tag but couldn’t find it).

Actually, I don't think that's what Hiroe-sensei has in store for Rock, even if I could be wrong. :)

In the latest chapter, Rock has a heartfelt discussion with Chang about still being concerned by what Garcia (iirc) told him :

And despite Chang warning him that he could be swallowed by Roanapur if he got too emotionally invested in his clients' life, Rock still answered...

...that making a difference is only possible by getting invested in others.

What's funny is that, even if Rock said "that's not the kind of bets he makes", that's actually the opposite. He's been making crazy bets since the arc with the twins and it went batshit crazy a few times, only starting to work out okay ever since the El Baile de la Muerte arc. So that's what he keeps doing.

To be honest, in my opinion, Rock still is greatly inspired by what Revy did for him the first time they met (summed up below from ch10) since that entirely changed his life.

And, in return, since their big fight, Revy tries to protect and nurture Rock's white knight attitude for as long as possible because it also makes her feel better about the life she's living [x][x]. That's why they've got such an interesting dynamic in the series.

A big difference since the "El baile de la muerte" arc though is that Rock more or less understood (through Garcia's words and then Feng's situation) that becoming a villain won't help him reach his goal.

So to me, it feels like he settled for "playing Robin Hood", a concept that was introduced long ago in the story and that helped settling that big fight he had with Revy at the beginning :

What's so compelling about Rock though is that he inspires people to bet on him. Revy did that first, by betting that if she protects Rock's attempts at being Roanapur's white knight, she will more or less find a meaning in the life she's led so far. The rest of the Black Lagoon crews follow because business flows okay.

And now? Well, Roanapur's big shots are starting to follow on this bet too. Like, Balalaïka during the Japan arc (shit I still have goosebumps)..

But also like Chang, in the latest chapter:

So I don't know if Rock will succeed or not at playing Robin Hood and the shepherd to some of Roanapur's lost souls (one thing I'm rather sure of is that, without Revy, he won't), but it's cool to think that people who could get rid of him with the snap of a finger are starting to bet that he might succeed. :D

To me that on-going question is what makes Black Lagoon such a good series to read. That and the fact it completely subverts gender norms. ;)
