[ID: A Naruto comic. Sarutobi stands in a bright white void and says, "Mm, so this must be the after--" He looks forward and sweats. "... life." Looming in front of him are Minato and Kushina, fists in palms and their eyes shadowed but expressions coldly furious. Sarutobi says, "Ah--" End ID]
——
‘I promise to take care of Naruto.’ He said before ditching a four year old pariah alone into an apartment, tossing some money at him, and telling him to figure it out.
It’s a love/hate thing with the Third Hokage when it comes to me.

i feel like the way hiruzen characterizes itachi is so fucking telling. where is that post thats like "the uchiha are the clan of love while the senju are the clan of duty" bc yeah. hiruzen says that itachi was an Exceptional uchiha. he highlights and praises how special he was, how already at a young age he could think like a hokage. wasnt as limited by his own clan's constraints like the other uchiha and was able to consider the bigger picture instead.
what is special abt itachi? itachi let himself be used as a tool. it goes back to what kakashi said in the land of waves arc, how he's like shinobi cant have emotions, theyre just tools of the state, they are means to an end. itachi is used as a means to an end. he is "special" bc he was capable to put aside his emotions or override them to a point where he was able to kill his own family. hiruzen thinks that this is what makes him an admirable shinobi and hashirama says the same! he compares him with himself bc he did the same! hashirama also overrode his own feelings and killed his friend for konoha. bc hashirama, as well, tried to consider the bigger picture. sacrifice one person to save a whole village. thats what it means to "think like a hokage" here .. and its also what it means to be a shinobi. according to itachi himself, being a shinobi means protecting the peace from the shadows. hashirama says that it means to endure. itachi's protection of the village entailed not just executing their work for them but also taking the blame onto his own shoulders so that konoha, the actual culprit, is not seen as the culprit. he's an uchiha, so it kind of puts the blame on the uchiha themselves as well. tobirama, when he hears of the genocide from sasuke, is like well. seems like the uchiha destroyed themselves. guess they had it coming. but at least they were useful to the village before .. itachi was an "exceptional uchiha" bc he was useful to the village more so than able to protect and side with his own clansmen. hashirama's "endurance" means smth similar. u endure the pain that comes w sacrificing ur friends and ur loved ones, u sacrifice them and take into account that they suffer in order to protect and maintain ur peace.
it feels so repetitive to say cuz i know many others have said it before but like this is the flaw in konoha's ideology. its on one hand the using its people as tools and on the other this viewpoint of protecting the greater good, the majority, at the cost of minorities (madara. one person. and the uchiha. one clan out of many). its what madara meant when he said that hashirama has his priorities backwards and it is also connected to what he said about how the "selfish desire to maintain peace causes wars". bc even tho this here is not a war. it is an act of insane cruelty that is done w the intention of protecting ur peace. u selfishly sacrifice and cut off parts of ur village as a solution to inner-village conflict. rather kill ur friend instead of resolving and understanding his issues and subject a whole clan to genocide instead of going the much harder way to resolve what has motivated them to plan to overthrow the government in the first place. this is why madara thinks its a lie! madara says that compromise is just a silent form of conflict. he gets this worldview bc of the policies and cruelties that he has anticipated and seen in konoha. hashirama seeing that the uchiha have a terrible stance in the village but not being capable of doing smth abt it and instead just letting it deteriorate ever more further. and the solution in the end's just to eradicate them. just like hashirama got rid of madara. rather killed him than going the more difficult route of making more effort to understand him and understand what caused his change in character and drove him towards his destructive actions in the first place.

Hiruzen naming his grandchild Konohamaru is glossed over way too much. Like. Fucking, really? You're naming your ONLY grandchild after THE VILLAGE YOU LEAD. Thas crazy imagine going to your new job and Joe Bidens grandson is there and his name is AMERICA. WHAT.

Actually, I’d almost d-word for a spin-off anime about the Founding Era.
Hiruzen would be the protagonist, but we’d get to see more about:
What Konoha looked like during its early days
The ninja academy in its draft stages
The friendships between himself and Danzo, Homura, Koharu, Torifu, and Kagami
How he met Biwako
What Tobirama was like as a sensei (I would love to see this)
Kagami (I’m dying to know what he was like personality-wise, I hc him as being similar to Shisui with a pinch of Minato)
Koharu and her abilities (she has to be strong to have survived as long as she has, what are her abilities I must knowww)
How Hashirama and Mito got married (probably a political marriage but I still wanna know the lore)
Madara before he left and his dynamic mentoring some of the village children
How Hashirama died (probably overuse of mitotic regeneration but still)
Hiruzen’s early rule as Hokage
How Kagami died (how was he only 25 and died despite being stronger than Shisui at his prime??? It must have been a big deal I need to know)
Kagami’s Susanō (I hc it as black like others do but once again I need to know. What if he had the Yata Mirror before Itachi?)
Hiruzen in his process of becoming ‘The Professor’
Danzo’s descent into the “shadow hokage”
Homura and Koharu taking up advisor rolls
What happened to Torifu
I just need the lore omg. I am lore-hungry. Lore-raveous.

Minato thoughts?
Minato is a magnificent bastard.
He teleports and uses it to slaughter a thousand people in one go. He picked a favorite student who ended up being the only one to survive, then stuffed the kid in ANBU to deal with his big feelings via dissociation and murder. He became the youngest Hokage and made sure to get some sick ass flames embroidered on his jacket.
And who else would ever have the temerity to summon death itself, seal one half of the oldest, most powerful tailed beast away into its stomach, seal the other half into his own minutes-old son, then also get gobbled up by death to spend eternity locked in glorious battle with the beast? Who else would decide that instead of allowing the beast to die with his mortally-wounded wife, the village needing to have a nuke trumped his son needing a father and also not having a demon sealed inside of him?
No one, that's who (well, except for maybe Hiruzen, who is just a rat bastard).

While perusing the naruto timeline I discovered that the Academy was formed ~30 years after Konoha was founded. The Chunin exams, being a part of the formalized shinobi education system, were formed after the Academy as well.
And at the time of the Academy's Founding, Hiruzen and the rest of his generation (Danzo, Biwako, Koharu, Homura) are approximately age 20~21 . They didn't grow up with the Academy or the Chunin Exams! They became, presumably, fully fledged shinobi, purely through individual mentorship and field experience.
So: no Academy also means no age limit.
This had me start thinking about the kind of childhood Hiruzen led, and what he would have considered normal. People love to criticize his decision to neglect Naruto (and rightfully so), but it's also clear that Hiruzen does regard Naruto with affection. It's entirely possible he saw Naruto's childhood as sheltered compared to what he experienced growing up without the safeguards of a formalized shinobi education.
