Managed to do another redesign with rewrite notes, this time my second favourite character in Ben 10, Azmuth The First Thinker. And just like Ben, he's canon self is such a mess that I wish to fix in my own way. The other Galvans in this picture are his family, with his father from the movie "Destroy All Aliens", his nephews mentioned by DJW, and their mother who is Azmuth's twin sister. So let me get into the notes and rewrite ideas of mine!

-Retaliator-

Yes, I am aware that this is most likely not his name, but I could not be bothered to make up my own at this point, and I also find it funny to have a Galvan dad called this, so I'm sticking with it. So Retaliator is the father of both Azmuth and Divi, a very humble and calm old galvan, who has seen a lot through his years, now retired and mostly just trying to keep the family together through small things.

Retaliator has the rare gene of having aqua/turquoise eyes, a recessive trait in galvans, similar to human with the red hair gene.

Retaliator looks younger than he should be, and that's because he is, in a way. You see, right before Azmuth vanished to start working on the watch, Retaliator fell ill to an disease with no known cure, and this caused the family to...kind of break down. A lot had happen up to this point (Things that will be noted throughout this), and none of them wanted things to end like this. So Azmuth did something he know he shouldn't have, as such a thing takes so much time and resource, and generally frowned upon, and ended up creating a new young clone body for his father's brains to be transferred too. By the time Retaliator woke up from surgery, his son was already gone, off in hiding. It this was event that really made Retaliator realize he may not have been the best father for a long time...

While he is retired now, Retaliator use to do work based around energy stuff.

Since he's family's back together, he likes to host game or movie nights, or even little dinners and get togethers.

He adores his grandsons, and loves to share stories from his past to them, and he's one of the few people they calm down around.

He will admit that he did...go a bit wild when he thought Azmuth died, fighting Ben in the Galvanic Mechamorph suit, but him and Ben have since made up, and the old galvan likes talking to the young lad often.

He has most defiantly embarrassed both of his kids by showing off baby photos of them.

He met his wife through work, like most galvans, with her being a much higher up worker. Surprisingly, despite their statuses, it was his wife who asked him out first, having found him very charming.

Retaliator can never thank Ben enough for convincing his son to come home, and despite their bickering, he enjoys seeing Azmuth's bond with Ben, as the two have a way of balancing each other out.

While he may be in a younger body, his mind is certainly still that of an old galvan, and can often act like his body is older than it really is due to the mental age of his brain.

-Azmuth-

Ahhhh, dear old Azmuth, how I love your character concept, and yet get so frustrated with your actual canon self...There is a lot I have changed in terms of his placement and behavior on the show, and while I can't note all of them down there, the major theme behind them is that he is not a complete jerk in them. Don't get me wrong, Azmuth would still have flaws and issues with his off-standing nature, but he would act in a way that feels more natural, showing his growth and change while mentoring Ben. He genuinely wants to help and is a good person, it's just...he still has a lot to work through. In terms of his slight redesign, I'll like to mention that if you look closely, his outfit is a mixture of his first original outside, crossed with his UAF outfit.

I did mention that I couldn't note all changes of him in series plots, since most boil down to be him being nicer and more realistic, but I will note one change because it's big enough to mention. For the Diagon/Forever Knight Arc, Azmuth did not create Ascalon, because I while I get he's smart and created things like the Omnitrix, I don't think he should be such a big source of dangerous artifacts in the series so often, especially ones that cause trouble. So instead, Ascalon was a weapon crafted in Ledgerdomain, to help fight Diagon who orientated there, and at the time had been trying to conquer earth, and Zenith leaving Azmuth happened because of miscommunication and issues between them instead.

That being said, Azmuth does get involved in the Ultimate Alien Diagon arc when Ben himself calls Azmuth over, needing his help knowing he can better understand Ascalon, and eventually entrusted Azmuth and the Galvans to keep it and the trapped Diagon safe.

Azmuth and his sister had a very rebellious phase as teenagers/young adults, this being the age that Azmuth said he was a lot like Ben, though admittedly, Azmuth was slightly more of an ass than Ben ever was. They were going through a tough time, and Azmuth reacted negatively too it all. Funnily enough, the one thing that seems to make him doo a 180 degrees in personality was his massive swooning crush over Zenith.

He won't ever admit out loud, but he does find Ben's trait of nicknaming his aliens kind of funny...

He shares a mentoring role towards Ben with Grandpa Max and Tetrax, with Max handling the more emotional and human side of Ben's problems, Tetrax handling the physical training and teachings, and Azmuth handling the more logical steps and hard truth Ben needs to hear. He's one of the few people to give Ben the smack of reality he needs from time to time.

That being said, Ben is also one of the few people able to handle Azmuth right back, and give him needed talkings to when the man is losing himself to a bad habit.

Mostly due to the fact that Tennysons seem to have a habit of making people very close to them like family, E.g with Ben seeing Kevin and Rook like brother figures at times, there seems to be subtle hints between Azmuth and Ben that there might be parent and child like moments between them, though both would deny it if brought up.

It doesn't help that Azmuth ends up taking it upon himself on making sure Ben is healthy and happy, based on scans from the Omnitrix he reads daily. Of course, he'll just say he doesn't want the boy he entrusted his watch with to die in a stupid way, but people close to either of them know that Azmuth really does care deep down.

He has said both "I'm too old for this" and "I'm too young for this" many times.

Azmuth has admitted that he's nervous around the Omnitrix, and doesn't like putting it on. He's not good at handling the idea of becoming something he's not...

The Malware arc for Azmuth was...a lot more complicated than canon. Azmuth really did try to fix Malware, but for some reason he couldn't, and it scared him that one, this might be the first problem he can't find a solution too, and second, he just came back from hiding and had been wanting to make changes in his life, so to fail and hurt someone already? He didn't know what to think. It didn't help when Malware started refusing his help and ended up endangering the lives of others, including galvans and Azmuth's own family. And despite it all, Azmuth kept trying over and over again to let him help Malware, but the villain always refused, until Azmuth eventually had to accept that he couldn't do anything. When Malware was finally killed, Azmuth went quiet for a good while, and needed time to recover from his mistake.

Due to some past issues, Azmuth mostly refers to his father by his real name, and only calls him dad or father during emotional or quiet moments.

Whenever they're hanging out, Ben likes to bring him and Azmuth cricket smoothies to drink together.

Despite how they seem to bicker often, Myaxx and him play off each other rather well, able to dry wit each other every day.

Azmuth and Albedo's relationship is also very complicated. Before Azmuth returned, Albedo was an outstanding Galvan and protégé, being praised every single day. This, unfortunately, made Albedo develop a prideful nature and his close minded views on the galaxy, as he rarely was ever put down or critiqued. His ego also got a bit of a boost when the great Azmuth took notice of him, and made him his assistant, and while he loved it at first, some issues started to arise when Azmuth wasn't like the other Galvans who praised Albedo to no end. That isn't to say Azmuth never complimented him and liked his work, but he was an honest man who knew no one was perfect, and especially wasn't going to worship someone, knowing what kind of ego that could make in someone. It doesn't help that Albedo just can't understand what Azmuth sees in Ben, and how the two bond, despite Ben's young careless nature, and being human. It ends up making Albedo want a lot more from Azmuth, the man he looks up too, and when he's denied that he eventually turns his back on the First Thinker. Azmuth can only hope that being able to turn into other aliens, and being stuck as human, will teach Albedo that Galvans, including himself, aren't what make the galaxy function.

Azmuth is typically one of the must unfazed people you'll ever meet.

Given most Galvans have an issue of seeing themselves as the top race, Azmuth is kind of fond of Blukic and Driba for being very open and helpful to outsiders, and was even the one to suggest them to join the Plumbers.

Zenith and Azmuth too meet up again eventually, and while they don't get back together, they do make amends.

Azmuth was fairly small for a Galvan for a long time, until he finally hit his growth spurt late into his teen years, something his sister use to tease him over.

Greymatter's DNA mostly comes from Azmuth, meaning Ben actually looks like a Azmuth when he was young, his family having made comments about Ben being his "Clone".

-Divi-

Here we have the twin sister of Azmuth, Divi. A dry wit, no nonsense, sarcastic and feisty single mother of her three chaotic sons. Unlike Azmuth's father and nephews, she was something I had to completely make up from the spot, since Azmuth was said to have nephews, that meant he had to have a sibling, so it was fun to create someone with an interesting dynamic with Azmuth. She is, after all, one of the few people to exhibit some of those petty family squabbles out of him. So I hope you enjoy her and her sons.

As mentioned before, Azmuth and her went through rebellious phases after some downfall in their family life, with Divi jumping around jobs and never settling for one, and even dating another Galvan that neither Azmuth or Retaliator approved off. When Azmuth first left Galvan Prime to go into hiding, Divi and her boyfriend had still been dating. However, when he finally came home, he found the boyfriend to be gone, and Divi now a single mother to three sons. Azmuth never got a clear story what happened to the boyfriend, but he knows that the break up was nasty, and that the boyfriend isn't on Galvan Prime anymore.

Sometime after Divi had her children, she eventually settled for a job in the nursery/incubation centre on Galvan Prime, looking after eggs and newly hatched tadpoles before they go home with their parents.

Divi is quite a blunt and honest woman, who has no time for dragging things on, and while she may sound harsh, she ends up just wanting the best for people. In fact her open nature of speech is how she gets people to listen and see reason.

Her and Azmuth had a...bit of a dysfunctional relationship growing up. Azmuth was actually a slow learning when he was young, and Divi had a habit of picking on him. They did eventually mallow out, until tragedy struck their family and they entered their rebel phases, and the bickering and arguing come from both sides. They have made up since Azmuth returned, but the two have their squabbles here and there, but they're mostly just playful banter or family habits.

Her and Myaxx get along quite well, and the two like hanging out with each other.

She's also fond of Ben since meeting him, and the two like chatting whenever he plays with her sons, he's even babysat for her a few times.

She has no interest in dating again anytime soon, and is proud to be a single mother.

She's the one who points out Azmuth and Ben's family like roles to each other often, mostly due to the fact that she understands what a paternal feeling is like, and because she's blunt about it.

She got her wisdom feet first out of her and Azmuth growing up.

While Azmuth was off in hiding, Divi reconnected with his father when looking after to him after surgery. So, unlike Azmuth, she mostly just calls him father and dad.

-Trapez, Cieven & Aegls-

The three mischievous nephews, sons and grandsons of the family. Left to right, Trapez, Cieven & Aegls, who are the triplets of Divi. The three are like glue, and are often playing or up to little tricks, creating chaos around Galvan Prime. While they mostly look the same and are all tricksters, they do have personality differences. Trapez is the best when it comes to emotions and the phycology behind it, something most Galvans struggle with, and can come across as the kindest of the three. Cieven has a lot of traits from Divi and Azmuth, being fairly intelligent and wanting to be a lot like his uncle someday, though does have some of their sarcastic nature as well. Aegls is the most energetic of the three, hype up often and quick with crafting and thinking of ideas. When you combine all three together, you get a force of endless chaos.

Their mother has been honest to them about who their father is, and why he isn't around, but the three have grown up fine without him, and will forever be grateful for the work their mother put into caring for them.

They were born while Azmuth was away, and so have been building up hype about their missing uncle for most of their lives, enough so that when Azmuth did come back, they all tackled hugged him while he was still understanding the idea that he was now in fact an uncle.

They love Ben and the Omnitrix, roping Ben into some of their pranks and shenanigans, and while Ben mostly tries to stare them into the right direction, he can't help himself half the time and joins in on the chaos, much to Azmuth and Divi's dismay.

They do become a part of my Ben 10 Next Gen Series, given Galvans take forever to age, and will finally be young tweens when the Next Gen takes place.

The three each have different dream jobs for the future. Trapez wants to be a psychiatrist or doctor, Cieven wants to be an inventor, and Aegls was to deal with energy based matters like his grandfather once did.

Never give these kids sugar or coffee, it will end badly.

The three...had a bad encounter with Malware during his rampage, and for a while were scared around Galvanic Mechamorphs...They get over it eventually, but Malware does haunt them for a long while.

They once picked up some colourful language from Azmuth and Myaxx when overhearing them once. You can imagine how Divi took that.

-The First Thinker Family-

The traumatic event that struck the family was in fact the death of Azmuth and Divi's mother, who was killed by someone who was after Galvan Tech. The family fell apart after that, with Retaliator falling into a deep depression and being distant from his kids, and Azmuth and Divi going wild in their teen/young adult years to distract themselves from the grief. They've all come together now and have been taking the proper sets to honor her memory, and become a family again.

While no one has outright said it, Ben has kind of become part of this little family in a few ways, and after a while Azmuth stops being survived when the boy shows up for family dinners or game nights.

They all live on Galvan Prime, though Retaliator is known to take trips here and there around the galaxy, wanting to see more of it during his retirement.

On the outside, many Galvans treat the family as there wise people, who have sage advice. And while that isn't wrong, once you get to know them they're a very chaotic family...

Space Sweepers and the History of Working Class People In Space

This week saw the release of Space Sweepers, Korea’s first big budget special effects space movie extravaganza. There are a lot of interesting things to say about this movie, but one of the things that makes it stand out is it’s an excellent portrayal of people in space who are skint.

See, I hate to break it to you, but you’re probably never going into space. Unless you’re a highly trained technical specialist (well done!) or a billionaire (pay your taxes!), your best shot at seeing Earth from space within your lifetime is the development of realistic-yet-cheap VR headsets.

And the thing is, a lot of the time this holds up in sci-fi as well. Space travellers are either living in a post-scarcity utopia, are part of the military, or are some kind of genius scientists.

Even where we see supposedly salt-of-the-Earth relatable types, like Han Solo or Mal Reynolds, their scruffy outfits and roguish ways can’t quite cover for the fact that they own and live in the equivalent of a massive luxury yacht or private plane. Serenity may look like a rust bucket, but it’s far from the equivalent of a white van, and while Mal is constantly complaining about the costs of fuel and repairs, that doesn’t change the fact that he seems to own the ship outright, and in “Oxygen” he appears ready to buy the ship for cash.

As for Han Solo, leaving for a moment his humble origins and that he won the ship in a card game, within the Galaxy Far Far Away the ratio of space travellers to non-space travellers doesn’t seem that different from the one on Earth. Yes, there are lots of smugglers and Tie-fighter pilots and interplanetary bounty hunters, but for every one of them there are millions of Tusken sand raiders, Jawa scrap merchants, moisture farmers and Corellian street rats. Spacecraft might come and go from the spires of Coruscant as regularly as buses, but the population density is such that most people on that planet will be lucky to see sunlight, let alone the stars.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, the chances of an ordinary person getting into space even in the foreseeable future vary between Willy Wonka Golden ticket level lucky, or truly dystopian. On the one hand, Elon Musk has announced the first all-civilian mission to space, led by billionaire Jared Isaacman (so, not what you’d call an everyman), two seats given to people who have won a place by donating to St Jude’s Hospital (it probably won’t be one of the smaller donors), and finally, one lucky front-line health worker.

But Elon Musk wants to colonise Mars, and sadly billionaires still need people to clean the toilets, so Musk has other ideas for how ordinary people might get into space. Unfortunately that idea is indentured slavery, demonstrating that the most prescient science fiction writers of our generation are the writers of first-person shooters.

This is why, outside of post-scarcity-fully-automated-luxury-space-communism, and the military, science fiction is always oddly quiet about money. With a few honourable exceptions.

We Just Work Here

The first and most obvious reason why any ordinary working-class person would end up in space is “they’re paid to”.

Pretty much the codifier of working-class people in space is Alien. The crew of Nostromo aren’t scientists, they’ve not got The Right Stuff. Nobody on that ship is getting a high school named after them. The crew of the Nostromo are basically truck drivers who venture off the highway and run into something nasty. Yes, ironically they show a great deal more competence, professionalism and intelligence in encountering an alien threat than the actual scientists in the prequel movie, but the first conversation these characters have when they come out of hyper sleep is about money. From the outset, these are people in a place of work.

It’s a model that set the format for gritty-industrial-working-class-people in space movies going forward for better or worse. Event Horizon just lifts Alien’s aesthetic completely for the rescue ship Lewis & Clark, as does the videogame series Dead Space, like Alien, set aboard a mining ship.

Away from the horror genre, Outland sees Sean Connery play sheriff in a final frontier mining town that could have taken place in the same world as Alien.

And of course, Red Dwarf, which not only made good use of the Alien aesthetic, but also cast the colony commander from Aliens as their Captain, to tell the story of chicken soup repairmen in space.

Across all of these stories, and of course the aforementioned videogames, the life of the blue collar space traveller is an unpleasant one, exploited by a company that not only controls your life while you work, but also owns all of your food, water and air. Indeed, it’s not rare for them to go further. In Moon, another film where the spacemen-to-earthmen ratio seems not far what it is now, Sam Bell’s employer decides to save the cost of training employees and ferrying them back and forth from Earth to the Moon by taking one employee and filling a cellar full of his pre-programmed, short-lived disposable clones.

Public Transport

But maybe you don’t want to work for “the Man”, not an unwise call given the Man is probably trying to feed you to something horrible in the hope of creating a new bioweapon. One surprisingly under-utilised method of getting into space is public transport.

In The Fifth Element, Bruce Willis plays a special-forces-operative-turned-cab-driver who, as part of his cover, wins a ticket to go on a space cruise. Although looking at the sets and the extras in this movie, as well as the packed-in-as-tightly-as-we-can apartments back on Earth, one gets the impression this is not an option open to the majority of working joes.

Perhaps the best example of this is in the shockingly under-loved 2018 flick, Prospect, featuring future Mandalorian Pedro Pascal.

In Prospect, the spaceship is little more than a rotating framework filled with cargo containers in front of a massive engine. The father and daughter prospecting team are on board a lander that resembles nothing so much as an old Apollo Lunar Lander on the inside, and as the mothership approaches their destination the ship doesn’t even stop, it just releases the lander, tells them when the ship is going to be passing back that way and warns them the line is being terminated, so there won’t be another ship passing that way.

This is a model it would be fantastic to see more of. The landing module is small enough that it’s entirely plausible that even these not-very-well-off characters could buy, hire or rent one. Rather than having the freedom of the space ways like Mal or Han, their travel options are entirely restricted by what destinations are profitable for large shipping companies and whether they’ll let you tag along. And while on the surface the aesthetic looks a bit Alien, in truth it feels far more like it’s cobbled together from relics of the actual space age.

Borrow Your Way Into Space

And finally, of course, there’s the Elon Musk solution. Borrow your way into space. One of the early places to use this idea was Gateway, by Frederik Pohl. Frederik Pohl in particular is fantastic at writing science fiction worlds where people actually have to worry about money. In Gateway and its sequels humanity has discovered Ancient Aliens left a space station nearby, stocked with a lot of spaceships. Being alien technology, humans can’t control the ships accurately, they’re limited pretty much to pressing the “Stop” and “Go” buttons, and when the ship flies off it might land on a world of fabulous riches, or it might chuck you into the heart of a star.

Prospectors who want to try their luck in these ships have to take out a loan to get to the station, and throughout the novel the protagonist is constantly aware of how many credits are in his account.

Which brings us back around to Space Sweepers. At first glance the Space Sweepers set-up might seem similar to that of the Millennium Falcon or Serenity – an extremely “used” looking ship run by a rag-tag bunch of misfits. But the first time we see the protagonist, Tae-ho, he’s in a pawn shop. As soon as he gets back to the ship we learn the crew are still paying off the cost of the ship, as well as the costs of repairs and parts.

We see an awful lot of “Space sweepers” throughout the film, junk collectors gathering up salvage from Earth’s orbiting collection of derelict spacecraft and defunct satellites. But these people don’t seem like roguish space pirates, the impression they give is more akin to app-based gig workers.

This is compounded by another issue – that to work in space you need a visa, with citizenship limited to the wealthy few who are able to afford a place on the deluxe orbiting space habitats.

Everything in Space Sweepers is driven by money, whether it’s Tao-Ho’s attempts to raise enough money to find his daughter, the robot, Bubs, and her attempt to get a humanoid body that reflects her gender, and of course, the $2 million reward for “Dorothy” which drives the whole plot.

Often space-based sci-fi is about the fantasy of freedom, of exploration. Even shows like Star Trek give us characters whose job isn’t much more than to fly around having adventures. But there is rich storytelling to be done about the people who have to clean the space toilets.

Chris Farnell’s novella series, Fermi’s Progress, is about a ship whose FTL drive vaporises planets, and features at least one space traveller who isn’t a scientist, super soldier or billionaire (although to be fair the other three characters are exactly that). You can find part one here.

The house he lived in had become a home.

He grew to love the minimalist white walls, the modern black and steel furniture. The way the air smelled like industrial cleaner, and how the too-soft carpet gave under his bare feet. Frosted glass windows with heavy blackout curtains kept him from staring out, or any strangers from staring in.

His room, at the end of the hallway at the top of the stairs, had once held only what he was allowed, now it only held only what he needed. A soft, big bed with satin sheets and plush comforters. A bookshelf with hundreds or pre-approved novels to waste time while his owner was away. A desk that was bare except for a simple black leather notebook and a ballpoint pen. A settee sofa sat in the corner closest to the door, a seat that once had been his welcome into a nightmare had become a gateway into another world. On it, marked with a simple metal bookmark, sat the first instillation of Fablehaven. Sure, it was a simple book meant for children, but all of his books were, and this one was one of his favorites. His room had a bathroom connected, which allowed for days without being let out of his room. At first, he hated being left in here, but this was his safe place now.

Down the hall a few steps was Wardell’s room. He hadn’t seen it much in the light, but on nights where he had been particularly obedient he was allowed in. His owner had the same bed that he did, but it felt so much more comfortable. His collar would be leashed to the headboard to prevent him from hurting himself on any electronics or papers that Wardell kept in his room, but he didn’t think he really needed it anymore. He wasn’t going to waste any of the precious time that could be spent curled against Wardell’s side.

At the bottom of the stairs was the entryway. He was forbidden from touching the door, but he didn’t want to anyway. The set of deadbolts and locks on it served a purpose, even if he couldn’t lock or unlock them himself. Wardell just wanted him to be safe from the strangers outside.

A bit farther than that was the living room. A massive tv sat on a shelf that held a dvd player and a vcr, as well as whatever movies Colten was allowed to watch. The black rug in the center of the room was soft enough and thick enough that Colten often thought his feet were going to be swallowed by it. The sofa in the room was considerably unimportant unless Wardell was on it with him.

Next to the living room was the dining area. The table was small, with only two chairs on either side of it. A modern chandelier hung above it, casting light down onto the black surface.

Taking a left hand turn brought him to the kitchen, and one of his favorite places of the house. His second year here, after testing had been finished on the miracle drug, he was allowed to use the kitchen. A naturally good cook, Colten used the kitchen any chance he got, preparing meals that he and Wardell would eat together at the table. Despite being relatively unused before Colten began living here, the kitchen was incredibly high-end, with two high efficiency ovens, a stainless steel refrigerator, and any miscellaneous tool that Colten could dream of.

In the corner of the kitchen were two doors.

The one on the left was to Wardell’s study. Colten was never allowed in there and had never been inside.

The one on the right was the lab.

That was his least favorite part of the whole house.

He was mostly okay with shots when he took them on the living room sofa, he could deal with scalpels cutting into his skin if it was over the dining room table, torture felt safe as long as he could see the sun forcing its way through the cracks in the curtains.

The stairs were concrete and bare, just like the floor, which made his blood easy to clean up and not an issue if it stained. At the bottom of the stairs and to the left was a counter, sink, and cupboards, each one filled with different medications, needles, blades, and any miscellaneous tool that Wardell could dream of. In the center of the room was Colten’s place. A versatile, black-leather covered operating chair that could be raised, angled, and used in any way needed. Clips for his collar and cuffs hung off of it, allowing Wardell to quickly strap Colten down. Above it, hanging off the ceiling, was a mirror a bit taller than Colten. It reflected every inch of Colten’s body back down at him, showing him exactly what Wardell was doing. It hadn’t always been there, but it had been even more difficult to ignore the pain since it was installed. Against the opposite wall of the counter were exercise machines. A stationary bike, a treadmill, and a bench. Each machine was to test his stamina and strength. A stool for Wardell and a wheeled tray for his tools were wherever was most convenient for them at any given time.

Colten had spent countless hours in the lab, strapped to the operating chair, tested for any number of responses or traits. He would often end up losing entire days (or even weeks) worth of memory, with his last known location being the operating chair. It was in the basement of his home that Colten was dissected, taken apart, filled with chemicals, broken and mended thousands of times.

But his house with Wardell was a safe place, distant from the strangers outside that sought to hurt him and take him away from his owner.

He didn’t want to leave.

now some disclaimers, it’s my first time writing for Hannibal and I absolutely love his character (I rewatched all the movies thanks to you), so in order to keep him as in character as I can, I twisted your request a little: the reader is a female, she doesn’t get stuck in his cell (because no one can freely enter his cell, per movies) and I gave her a name because using the person’s name is a very important thing in Hannibal’s way of manipulating and getting into a person’s mind, which i love hhhhh. so i actually turned this into a Hannibal and OC story (but I kept your grey eyes hehehe). Mike “Metal Fang” Gurch. What an ugly man, she thought, and she was not talking about his appearance. Metal Fang had a terrifying glare indeed, his features twisting as seconds passed, but no matter how she’d word her questions, all he would do was grin his metal teeth and laugh, that was what drove her mad. After the moment he would start laughing there was no point in going on. The laughter would continue even after she exited the secured hall, they told her, even as she was climbing up the building’s stairs and leaving the building. Metal Fang would only laugh.

On top of getting no answers from him, 10 ft away was another inmate that made her stomach turn. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter. One of the top ten most dangerous killers in the world, Doctor Hannibal Lecter was a force on his own: apparently kind, ruthless, intelligent, manipulative, well mannered and rude. He was a walking paradox, a force many call the pure evil. Some sources call him Lucifer himself, the Lord of Hell and the God’s favorite angel at the same time. Every time she was assigned to come and try to get Metal Fang to talk, to find the bodies he hid, trying to find something, anything - every time she was welcomed by Hannibal Lecter.

“Good evening, Alice.” he would say the moment she stepped into the hall, with no real explanation of how he knows it was her or why does he know her name. She tried to change her walk, her pace, only getting a short grin from the old inmate as a result. A grin she never dared to see in person. At first she would ignore him, trying her best to get the answers from Metal Fang, ignoring Hannibal’s quirky remarks. “You changed your perfume today, Alice.”, “You made him laugh 5 seconds faster, Alice, should that get a praise?” She ignored him, tried her best to, and never walked in front of the glass to see the man speaking. She was an agent so the feeling brewing in her chest wasn’t fear, she refused to believe it was. It’s not about fear, I’m just not wasting my time with him.

Today was nothing special, the same routine, the same shameless smile from Dr. Chilton she brushed off, the same chair in front of Metal Fang. Only one thing was different: Hannibal didn’t greet her, and she didn’t know what to make of it. She didn’t care.

She sat down in front of the iron bars, but no sign of Mike Gurch. He hadn’t eaten yet, the steak with fries still on the floor where he put it himself. The dim lights of the hall didn’t help her to see in his cell, despite Mike being a massive man for his late forties.

“Mike Gurch, hi. Are you- are you feeling fine?” she tried to make out the slight movement in the cell. He spoke in court, a smart man he seemed, but from the moment he got a life sentence he changed. Her bosses told her to brush it off, just a manipulative tactic to get mercy from them. You have to make him speak. Do it for the families, alright, agent Watkins? You don’t want to disappoint them after your big success. If only it was so easy. The big pile of papers on her lap were not really helping either, but she had to do everything by the rules, even more now when…

The plate on the floor was being dragged slowly into the darkness, only to get a french fry thrown at her seconds later. She was not amused.

“Mike, come out if you please, let’s ta-” the sentence ended in a yelp when the 240 lbs man shoved himself against the cell bars from utter darkness. She pushed herself off the chair so suddenly it fell, dropping all the papers on the floor and running straight to the end of the hall, far away from Mike and his frantic arms through the bars. The sounds he was making were hell sent. Her heart was beating in her throat. Mike was laughing and groaning and yelling, gagging on the food he had in hands. Her chest was racing and her mind was going through all the protocols she knew, all being silenced the moment she heard a familiar voice.

“Good evening, Alice.”

She turned her head towards the cell, the only one with glass instead of bars. In the middle of it stood Hannibal, his back straight and his face showing a protocolar smile. She imagined him shorter, and with more white hair. Or with none at all. His icy blue eyes were stuck on her grey ones, heavy, piercing, staring.

“Watkins. I’m Agent Watkins.” she said between fast breathes, furrowing her eyebrows.

“So you’d like to say, Alice, but here you are. Shaking. Is that what an agent does, Agent Watkins?”

She stood up and looked towards Mike’s cell, and then back to Hannibal, his eyes never leaving hers.

“F-Fear has nothing to do with being cautious. Plus, the guards will be here soon,” she said, “I don’t need to deal with it myself.”

Something in her answer made his eyes shine, not answering her for a few moments. The hall’s door didn’t open, and the guards didn’t come.

“The guards are taking their sweet time, aren’t they? Could it be that you denied Dr. Chilton’s enormous ego? Did you, Alice?”

She didn’t answer, just looking towards the exit and back to Hannibal with concern in her eyes. He was lying. He must be, even as selfish as Dr. Chilton was, he wouldn’t do this.

Hannibal grinned. “Good. Now tell me, Alice, how long will you read other people’s words to the poor Mike?”

“What- what do you mean?” she was taken back. “I’m just following the protocols and questionnaires.” she said confused, the shaking in her body was gone. Mike kept on laughing, but his tone changed slightly, something she never heard before.

“Exactly. You can do more than that, Alice. Come on, give it a try.”

“I don’t have time for that, Doctor Lecter. I-” she stopped for a second, listening. Not laughing anymore, Mike did a weird mix of weeping and laughing, echoing through the hall. Hannibal smiled.

“Oh, but I do. Now tell me, ‘Young Agent caught the serial killer Metal Fang when her more experienced colleagues failed’,” he said the entire newspaper title without blinking an eye, “how did a young agent like yourself catch Mike?”

She was a bit put off by the question. “It was the entire team who did it.” she stopped, but Hannibal’s stare persisted, his silence making her swallow hard. He raised his eyebrows, waiting for her to continue. She clenched her jaw and exhaled loudly. “My colleagues were searching a house, meanwhile, after talking to people around the area, I discovered another one. It was pure luck that mine was the right lead.” she answered, her eyes focusing on the corner of Hannibal’s room. They told her not to get involved anymore because they got it, but they were wrong and while she was right, she still felt wrong. Bad. Selfish.

Lonely.

“So humble, Alice. How many colleagues of yours are hating you right now?”

“What? No, that’s not how it-”

“Oh Alice, Alice who worked on the case and Alice who lead us off so she can have the fame. What is a woman even doing in this place.” his tone was full of mockery, but his stare unchanged. “Do you feel their eyes on you, Alice? How they’re looking down on you and expect

you to act in a way you don’t?”

Her mouth turned into a line, her grey eyes more vibrant than ever. His eyes squinted for a split second, so subtly it could very well be her imagination. He was still staring at her. Into her.

“You caught him, Alice. Not them, not the papers.”

Was…was Hannibal Lecter complimenting her? Everything was starting to get very heavy and it was getting hard to breathe. She needed to get away.

“GUARDS!!” she screamed but to no avail, and Mike’s arms were still almost all out through the steel bars, crying and weeping.

Wait a minute. Crying.

“He’s crying.”

“Mmhm. He always did after you left, even after your cheap hand cream scent left the room, he kept on crying. And crying. And weeping. And sobbing.”

“He- he was crying and not laughing all this time?”

“Yes. Go on.”

“That’s a form of manipulation, he is manipulative and smart. He only tries to get pity on himself, to manipulate us.”

“Tsk tsk tsk. You did it again, Alice. The words written on a paper, with someone else’s hand, with someone else’s mind. Think, Alice.”

“Only if…,” she murmured to herself, Hannibal’s grin growing larger. “Only if he isn’t mocking. He was showing off, knowing, remembering. He remembers everything, at once, and fuels him. He knows what he did.”

“Good, good, Alice, very good.”

“He needs visual stimulant to explain in detail what he did, not just questions. And he’s crying because he- he…” she was once again lost between thoughts.

“Why did he bite his victims, Alice?”

She raised her eyes again to meet Hannibal’s. Mike “Metal Fang” bit his victims on every inch of their skin, different bite shapes to different victims. “To mark them, a sign of power and…ownership. He used different tee-. ” Then it clicked. “Each set of teeth had different imprints, the fangs altering from feline to canine to reptile. His urges to control, to own, he was like an animal. He thought he was an animal, different animals for different victims?”

“What is delicious for the lion might be tasteless to the wolf.”

“The different reactions he had towards women, he manifested them through animalistic instincts of hunter and prey.”

“And he was wild, and free, and powerful. Then, you happened, Alice.”

“Caged. He’s crying because he’s caged, he acts like a wild animal in a cage. Not eating, aggressive with people but submissive in solitude.” she was violently ventilating at her discovery, needing to tell her boss. They might get him to talk if they could move him, they might find where Mike hid the other victims. But…

“Why? Why do you help me, doctor?” she inhaled slowly.

“Am I, Alice? You said it all yourself, I’m merely un auditiour.”

“You knew all this time I was wrong. You also know where he hid the bodies, don’t you, doctor?”

He came closer to the glass, and she could swear he didn’t blink all this time. “Now that would be a help you’d like to get, wouldn’t you, Alice? Good things come to those who wait.”

“Watkins. My name is Watkins.”

“No, no, no. That is your daddy and your mommy’s name, and their mommies and daddies before them. I’m not talking to them, Alice, I’m speaking to you.” they were meters away, with a thick glass in between, but she couldn’t help holding her breath. His stare was heavy on her, his voice with a terrifying depth echoed in her mind, nothing else around them but her, him and his stare.

“It’s time for you to leave, Alice.” the words brought her back to reality few seconds before the hall door opened, guards rushing by her side. Dr. Chilton looked all affected, apologizing and cursing the guards in a dramatic way, but her eyes were still fixated on Hannibal. Words wouldn’t come out, ignoring everything and everyone as she climbed the stairs and left the building. All she could see in front of her was Hannibal Lecter as she left surrounded by guards. He was smiling at her, waving goodbye. Her mind was too clouded and blaffed to understand why did he help or what happened, and she needed to write down everything she discovered about Mike. But there was only one thing in her mind at that moment, the words Doctor Hannibal Lecter mouthed as she was taken away.

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR JOKER (2019) !!

I finally got to watch the film a second time and pick up on more details the first watching had deprived me off ( honestly I was too enthralled by the atmosphere to notice :”D )

In this post I attempt to highlight common points between the two Joker iterations presented in each film. Because I’m not very well versed in Jeremiah’s character study I have only included Jerome in the Joker contrast. But if someone comes across this post who is more well versed than I, feel free to add a comparison with Jeremiah in the mix !! I will also be giving some brief character analysis points on Arthur in the way I interpreted him after watching the movie. Thanks for reading ! ~

Common points between Jerome Valeska & Arthur Phleck :

Eccedentesiasts Both of them deal with pain by laughing it off, compulsively or otherwise. Laughter, to them, is usually not an expression of joy. On the contrary, they laugh when they are in physical or emotional pain, as a means of intimidation or an attempt to fit in etc etc Laughter is a necessary part of their expressive skillset; it is used to externalize more than one emotions and as a main means of expression.

Delusions of grandeur Both of them believe they were made for greater things. Jerome confesses to his father that finally someone ( Theo Galavan ) ‘sees’ him while Arthur confesses the same thing to his social worker. Because of their backgrounds, they both spent the majority of their lives unseen, until violence ( matricide or murder in each case ) was the trigger that gave them their ‘time to shine’. ( In Arthur’s words “people are starting to notice” ) Jerome says he has a vision. Arthur says he was destined to spread joy and laughter. They both believe they are someone great, someone above average who deserves to be in the spotlight and life has depraved them of that chance.

Theatrical moves / calculated body language Arthur expresses his Joker persona through dancing. In his dance, he extends his limbs and makes himself look bigger; from his expression we can tell he feels confident when he’s dancing, he can be stoic or flamboyant, he feels sexy and powerful amidst the dance. Otherwise, his posture is hunched, he makes himself look small when he’s in a crowd and doesn’t gesture much, he’s stiff and aloof. Though Arthur doesn’t seem to be consciously manipulating his body language to give different signals, he is still doing so. And in that same way, Jerome changes his own depending on the setting and persona he is currently embodying; i.e. when first approached by the authorities he too appears hunched and humble ( potentially mimicking his twin brother ) in order to make himself less of a threat. Later on his gestures grow wide and bombastic. He moves in a calculated, theatrical fashion when on stage, equipping broad gestures that resemble cartoon villains.

Poor relationships with parental figures This one need not much elaboration. Both of them come from complicated backgrounds. They haven’t received proper treatment to deal with the scars said backgrounds inflicted either. The problematic relationship with their mothers is detrimental; the relationship between mother and child is considered to be one of the most ( if not THE most ) important in a person’s life. To have that taken away from them has left an indelible mark that contributes to the eventual decline of their mental health.

Immature mindset Both of them are absolute manchildren. The petulant child that never grew up is at the core of their character. Arthur displays childlike mannerisms and behavior on several points of the movie ( i.e. his fantasy appearance on the Murray show the first time, where he sounds much like a child flaunting their achievements ) Jerome reflects that immaturity as well ( i.e. his childish sulking when Oswald doesn’t give him his way )

Performative empathy & mimicry Neither experience empathy for others, but both have been seen performing it in different times of their lives. In order to blend in they mimic behaviors they’ve seen from other, ‘normal’ people in hopes that will make them pass as indistinguishable. Jerome mimics his brother to get away with matricide. Arthur adopts the mannerisms of Arkham’s clerk ( calling him ‘brother’ and whatnot ) in order to get in his good graces and retrieve his mother’s patient file. That’s a true element of the Joker’s character, because throughout his appearances he has been shown to mislead people into identifying with him or his motives in order to manipulate them and that requires a level of emotional intelligence in performing emotion.

Accidental founding fathers of a movement Neither Jerome nor Arthur meant to start a movement. They accidentally sparked one. In reality, both are rather indifferent about the ‘cause’ of the movement as well. Arthur directly states that as Joker on the Murray show and is seen dumping the clown mask in a dumpster. He doesn’t care about the politics, or about justice. He only cares for himself. The same applies to Jerome. Valeska manipulates his Cult and uses them to his advantage, but when it comes down to it he only does so because they serve him and allow him to bask in the spotlight, not because he cares about them or any outcast for that matter. Both Jerome and Arthur know how to draw and work an audience.

The clown symbolism Jerome grew up in the circus, being surrounded by circus performers with clowns among the bunch. Clowns haven’t played a pivotal part in his life, but they were part of the imagery that shaped him. This is the kind of scenery that is familiar to him, that feels more like home. Thus, he has been heavily influenced by the clown aesthetic, despite having no direct references to it. Jerome is all about shows and the spotlight. His trademark laugh garners attention and that’s why he uses it as a symbol to create his own persona by building on something he’s naturally equipped with. During S4 he is seen sporting jester skull shaped buttons on his coat’s sleeve cuffs. Things are different for Arthur, who works as a clown because it is the closest thing to achieving his dream goal available at the time. He says he wants to make people laugh. But, because he is an unreliable narrator, we can’t tell apart where the lie begins here; he could be using that as a victim card to knit the persona of a guy who ‘just wanted to make people laugh’ but ended up causing massive damage instead. (an argument often used by the Joker in either comical or somber light ) Either way, clowns have been a theme in their life, shaping their Joker personas directly or not.

Under the light of Joker being a symbol for malevolence, Jerome and Arthur have their separate ways of luring people to follow in their steps and come undone. While Jerome's is much more blatant ( 'Do it, kill them, it doesn't matter' ) Arthur uses appealing to emotion instead ( 'If it was me on the sidewalk you'd walk all over me' - creates identification with the average viewer '.. A mentally ill loner.. You get what you deserve' - the satisfaction of vengeance is shared between him and the viewer in such moments, it is EXPIATION )

As a character, Jerome is young, naive and inexperienced when first starting out, but he shares the same frustrations against the world as Arthur does : he wants to be seen, he believes he was treated unfairly, he believes he DESERVES things. ( this is a common theme in the psychology of incels as well, hence the incel Joker memes xD )

But because he is not as thorough as Arthur, his message comes already chewed, shoved down your throat; Do it! He says. Meanwhile, after watching the movie, Arthur's narration makes you consider doing it even if he never directly encouraged you.

MUN QUESTIONS.

Q1 : If you could write your character your way in their own movie, what would it be called, what style would it be filmed in, and what would it be about? Unfortunately, Glorious Bastards is already taken. So instead it would just be a comedy, in the same style as The Dictator, featuring Eligos’s view of Eorzea and the problems encountered in trying to adapt to life in it.

Q2 : What would their soundtrack/score sound like? “Machines Collide” by Frank Klepacki and most of the MGS: Revengeance soundtrack for combat. “The Devil You Know” by Blues Saraceno for social interactions.

Q3 : Why did you start writing this character? I wanted a change of pace, really. My prior character was patient, but he was also not outgoing enough to engage people on his own terms nor able to really carry a conversation. I also wanted to play a character that was more upbeat and less depressing, and so the overly cheerful bastard Garlean was conceived as a character.

Q4 : What first attracted you to this character? Design, design, design. I am not ashamed to admit I’m extremely picky with armor types and equipment when making sets. Slight clipping drives me up a wall and I’ll often scrap a set due to some overlap or small detail that doesn’t look right, like the metal trim colors not lining up perfectly. Using a Hyur model for the Garlean meant I could wear almost all armors and have them look right, versus the issues I ran into playing Au Ra and Elezen characters who are a bit stretched out and so they are more limited in choice that works really well.

Q5 : Describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse. Eligos tends to look down on those around him that he feels can’t keep up with him. He is very technology oriented, and because of that he also tends to view those who refuse to adapt to the times as lesser, simpler beings.

Q6 : What do you have in common with your muse? We both are very easily entertained beings. It doesn’t take much to amuse me, and Eligos is much the same in that he seeks joy and finds it in the small things in life.

Q7 : How does your muse feel about you? Eligos would get bored very quickly and just walk off. He would probably just forget me within ten minutes of meeting me.

Q8 : What characters does your muse have interesting interactions with ? Can’t say! Each person he’s met so far has managed to draw different aspects of his personality out and into play. With some he’s more patient and quiet, letting them speak at length, and yet with others he’s played the part of unwanted pest, peppering with questions that are borderline insults as he prods to see what makes Eorzeans tick the way they do and trying to understand them better.

Q9 : What gives you inspiration to write your muse ? Mostly it’s music that inspires me or urges me to write more for Eligos. I have a playlist I tend to listen to when I want to write the character, or I play a song or two by Sabaton.

Q10 : How long did this take you to complete ? I didn’t track the time. At least an hour.

Why I like them: This is a bit tough, not because there are no reasons to like him lol, but because there are multiple reasons to like him. Actually, what I feel for this guy is immense love, the kind of love that I cannot explain, just something that I feel very strongly, but anyway let me put this into words.

Sanjay Dutt is someone who has a very endearing inner core. He basically seems like a child underneath a big 6 feet body, and this much I can decipher just by watching him perform or watching him offscreen. His eyes are the windows to his soul, and they reflect nothing but beauty, his smile is one of the most cute, genuine and childlike smile I have ever seen.

God bless this laughter!

Another trait that I admire about him is his honesty, he is not afraid of judgement, he says it like it is, and says it like a boss. Openly confessing to doing all the drugs in the book or confessing to sleeping with 308 women are not at all easy things to confess.

And might I add that most people I know are forgiving towards all these confessions, because at the end of the day he is Sanjay Dutt, and he will be loved, regardless of what he says, he has a hypnotising charm, once you love him you cannot stop.

Sanjay Dutt is not politically correct, he never has been, and he never can be, that is why his interviews are intriguing and fun. We are all like Anushka’s character in Sanju, intrigued with the honesty and impressed with the personality.

Sanjay Dutt is someone who has amazing amount of mental strength. If anyone else was in his position he would probably be in deep post-traumatic stress. However this guy is made out of steel, in spite of it all he managed to have a good career and a good life. Kudos to the resilience. Kudos to the person.

Instead of crying about all the trauma, he bounced back, he forgave people, and continued to be the loving and jovial person he is. There is nothing that can ever stop his zest for life.

He is a brilliant actor! And I love the kind of cinema he stands for! I cannot stress this point enough! I don’t know if my words will be able to do justice to his talent! But hey let me give it a shot!

Sanjay Dutt is truly a natural actor, he feels his character, nothing about his acting is ever “put on” that is exactly why all his characters, whether good or bad, are so impactful to the audience, like Hrithik once rightfully said:

“There are a very few actors who seem like they are feeling their character, and Sanjay Dutt is one of them. He scared me while we were shooting for Agneepath. I was like do you actually really hate me?”

I think Sanjay Dutt is the kind of actor who puts his soul in the character he plays, that is exactly why people like me are able to form a great connect with all his characters, you are able to feel for them deeply, because it is portrayed with a lot of soul. Like the great Nasseerudin Shah once said:

“Sanjay’s eyes can reflect real pain, unlike any other young actor. This is because Sanjay has already gone through so many experiences in life, experiences which have contributed to him being a good actor already. A good actor is one who can add to his range as he goes through various personal experiences in life. This look of pain endows Sanjay with both vulnerability and raw power on the screen.’‘

Some of his fans also do a rather amazing job at describing the vulnerability that Sanjay brings to all his roles. Exhibit this:

“The more I watch Saajan the more I am struck by how deep an insight into his soul Sanju gives us in his (at times heartbreaking) portrait of a sensitive poet. How much suffering, despair and loneliness can be seen in his eyes when he is overcome by mental anguish! In my opinion, for the understanding of Sanjay Dutt as a human being, Saajan is as important as Naam.”

I don’t think any amount of quotes can do full justice to the talent this man has, but let me just put it this way, I honestly feel every emotion he goes through in almost every performance of his, he is able to communicate so much even without saying a word, he is one of those very rare actors who does not have to overdo their performance to be effective. I think he is damn underrated, and so are some of his movies, some of them are legit masterpieces. Although, a lot of his characters do have a cult following, especially the characters Raghu (Vaastav) and Munna Bhai.

However my favourite performance of his is quite underrated, and that would be of Inayat Khan from Mission Kashmir.

This movie is amazing and deserves a lot more credit then it gets. Sanjay Dutt’s acting in it is terrific, his performance in this movie always moves me to tears. Not once does Sanjay Dutt’s acting gets “dramatic” but it is still so impactful. He doesn’t say much yet his eyes have so much to say. His random outbursts of sadness, anger and anguish is something that is to watch out for. And like his every performance he puts a lot of himself in the character. Inayat Khan is not perfect, but he has a good soul, a heart that is in the right place. Inayat Khan is most of the time full of strength and is the protector, however that does not mean he is not capable of crying like a baby when it hurts way too much. Honestly I see a lot of Sanjay Dutt in this character, it is a character that was meant to be played by him. Sanjay Dutt is a potent mixture of vulnerability and strength and so is Inayat Khan, and that is exactly why the character comes alive, the character feels very real and it moves you at every moment. The character is portrayed brilliantly, and even though Sanjay Dutt did win some awards for it, I do not think this movie and his acting in it got it’s credit. This movie is ahead of it’s time and is an underrated gem. It makes for a splendid watch. Too bad it came at a time when romances and comedies were the “in thing.”

He is extremely Humble and Passionate:

Sanjay Dutt was no.1 in Bollywood when he got arrested in a very controversial case, just when everything was finally looking up for him it all went completely downhill. After showing support, many producers and directors decided against casting Sanjay Dutt in their movies. From being no.1 and to having all the success that he deserved, his career went to a minus due to a huge controversy.

Not only this, but for 1.5 years he stayed locked up in terrible conditions. If this happened to any other actor they would have collapsed, nothing is more important to a Bollywood actor than success and their ego, this sudden rejection after massive success is not an easy pill to swallow, especially not for a narcissist. Thankfully Sanjay Dutt is not one. He came out, did whatever work he got and made his way up again.

And he did not work hard or work in a zillion movies afterwards to prove a point, but just because he believed in doing his work with love and dedication, nothing less and nothing more. He did his karma and didn’t care for the results, and that is the kind of passion for work and humbleness that everyone should aspire to have.

as Mahesh Bhatt once said:“One of the things I loved about working with him was the relief of finding an actor who is not narcissistic. I remember thinking during Naam: This guy doesn’t give a damn about how he looks on screen, he leaves it to the cameraman and just goes and does what he’s supposed to. And this in an industry where men (and macho men, not just the pretty boys) go to huge lengths to control how they look on screen — lighting, best profile, best angle — spend hours, like women, in front of their mirrors before they give a shot. Not Sanju. It was a relief to find a male who was not in awe of his own physical form. I don’t think I’ve found an actor who fits that bill in all my life.”

Why I don’t: He doesn’t know how to sell himself.

Favorite film/scene:

If I have to choose one scene, it would be the scene in Mission Kashmir in which Inayat khan gets furious with his wife. Inayat Khan is a person who has always been extremely supportive towards his wife and clearly loves her a lot. Hence the anger that he has towards his wife in that scene is more about the hurt he feels, as he feels betrayed by someone who is very close to him. I think after suffering so much in life, this angry outburst sums up the hurt and despair he has been going through for so many years. Even though he may be in the wrong here, the outburst seems so straight from the heart, and is so raw that you cannot help but feel bad for him. I think that is a mark of a great performance. Sanjay Dutt’s characters are never politically correct, but because his emotions are so raw and are so honest, you cannot help but just root for him, and see things from his perspective. I mean he even made one feel bad for his character in Khalnayak, even though he was completely in the wrong throughout, again I empathised the most with his character in that film when he has an angry outburst regarding his Mother. Sanjay Dutt’s angry outburst in most movies are about him portraying an explicable amount of sadness and frustration, and I look forward to such scenes of his. His anger displays his vulnerability, and that makes for a great watch.

Favourite line: “Mujhe jo iys desh se mohabbat hai, woh kisi IS officer ki mothaj nahin” (Mission Kashmir). I also love the song he has sung for his movie ZINDA. The song is called “Kabhi Muskurake” and that song kind of sums up his life.

Favourite outfit: He looks hot in everything he wears, I am quite a fan of his late 80s and 90s fashion though, the beautiful long hair, a nice white shirt, and a nice pair of jeans on his tall legs is always a winner!

OTP:Non-romantic definitely him and Govinda. They are a laugh riot, they have created some of the most epic comedies together!

OTP: Sanju has shared great chemistry with everyone, but I think I will only ship him with me! LOL

Unpopular opinion: Sanju is mainly known for his intense action dramas or comedies, however I feel he is extremely underrated as a romantic hero. I think Sanjay Dutt always shares amazing chemistry with his female costars. I think his height and big broad shoulders make him look very attractive, and to add to that he has this cute child like innocent face to go with it. He is like every woman’s dream man. I think he is very underused as a romantic hero. Great love stories could be made with the intensity he has. I love when he hugs his heroines, he always closes his eyes while doing so, it is very cute.

A wish for them: Do more great movies

An oh-god-please-don’t-ever-happen for them: Don’t get caught in any controversy again. Please stay safe and happy. I cannot see you suffer anymore.

so far all opinions I’ve seen and read about Captain Marvel are mostly negative, some I agree with, but most I don’t

Spoilers Obviously:

-I agree that this movie could’ve been so so so much much more, it feels like the production team didn’t want to take big risks

-Yes, the marketing didn’t help because they set up this film as a feminist movie, but in the movie are barely a couple of dialogues about feminine empowerment, and a sequence of images that are in the trailers. some didn’t like it and they took this excuse to say the movie is bad just because it’s too feminist (they’re exaggerating obviously) but also people that went to see it with much much higher expectations about the movie, are being let down because it’s a very flat plot

-I agree that it was very lazy to have given her the abilities through some device that was powered by an Infinite Stone, but for me it does make sense (basically all or most movies had had something to do with Infinity Stones duuh ) that the space stone gives this power unit or whatever it is (a motor?) the quality of traveling ships to a supersonic velocity and I kinda understand her powers, she basically has that engine power now running through her entire body and DNA, while the most predominant color on her is yellow and white-ish you can see when she starts powering herself or turns it down that it’s also blue all around her, even when she’s in binary form, it’s like a thin aura of blue, because of the tesseract of course...

for that particular reason, people are saying it’s not ok that she is THAT MUCH powerful, and (? calm down? I don’t she’s gonna kill Thanos, when she blasted Yon-Rogg or others she didn't (or her blasts) perforated the persons, yes maybe a blast like that would instantly kill a human but c’mon not Thanos... also the reason she takes down so easily those spaceships is because as previously known, her powers are pure energy, massive energy and well, the spaceships are of some kind of metal?, also that pure energy was taken from the tesseract (space stone) and it had been done before, CA:TFA Red Skull and Zola used energy from the Tesseract to power their guns, it also was used to power the device that opened portals in Avengers1. So the stones are a source of pure energy and I’m ok with Carol having those powers.

-I agree, or I would have loved to see more of her past, not just flashbacks in no particular order, if the movie would have been 30min longer they could have done it better because for me it felt like she doesn't remember ALL of her life on earth, She has flashes sometimes, she listened to the recording of the accident and that’s why she remembered what happened and how she obtained the powers, little Monica shows her pictures and you can see in her face she kinda starts remembering more little moments, but in the end she’s like ‘’meh’’ ‘’I used to have a life here but now with this powers I wanna do great things out there in the space’’ because she leaves so easily :’c what about her and Maria(? did she ever return? for a quick visit perhaps? or she just abandoned them in order to save space or whatever? was THAT the first time Fury Pushed that button?

-’’She is an ‘’Deus ex Machina’’ ‘’Mary Sue’’ character’’, no I don’t agree, yes she seems ridiculously powerful but I don’t think that’s bad also I don’t think just because they didn’t show any debility for her that means she is unbeatable or gonna kill Thanos, with no doubt Carol is now the pice that was missing from the Avengers and I have no trouble with her saying something like ‘’pff you couldn't beat that purple guy? HAHA let me try’’ because she is super confident on her capabilities, and also people are saying ‘’what is wrong with her?’’ ‘’why is she so big head?’’ ‘’can’t she be a little humble about her powers?’’ and I'm here like ‘’WHY HAS SHE TO DO SO?’’ Y'all are ok with Thor being super confident with himself, that makes him cool, like in Sakaar he’s like ‘’I’m gonna beat the grandmaster’s champion and fly outta here’’ or early in the movie‘’ I’m gonna kill you Surtur son of a b*tch’’ etc moments in other movies when he is so confident about himself and his strength

and if you answer is ‘’well Thor has always been like that but at first that same attitude make him lose his powers so he could understand what a true hero is like, also not always he succeeds, he didn’t beat up the Hulk and his arrogance and need of vengeance stopped him from right away killing Thanos’’ yes ok I see it, but perhaps we will see in a future movie how Carol’s confidence may blind her about something and she fails, but we know she's gonna get up and try and try and try ‘’ooh but that’s so pretentious of her, she is all -’’ I can do it’’ -’’I’ll do it by myself’’’’ blabla erm yes but when she stopped Maria, Nick or Talos from helping her (? the snarky (idk if that’s the right word i dont wanna say srcastic again) comments a very common attitude of most MCU heroes by now?-Genius, billionaire philanthropist -I wouldn't stress about it (hurting her) (Natasha) -I could do this all day -Valkyrie -Hope ( "I just have one question, when Cap needed help, if I’d asked you, would you have come?" "I guess we’ll never know. But if you had, you’d never been caught." ) I hope my point is taken by now (?

-Also, people complaining about not being there a big third act, not big final battle, uugh honestly who understands you? if it’s done you don’t like the typical threat to the earth or universe especially if it has to do with some big lightning to the sky or the end of the world or whatever, I think it's fresh not to have that typical final battle (? there kinda is but she takes them off so easily because the real problem is how to protect Talos’ family and help them while also stopping the Kree dudes

- ‘’ It's ridiculous how Fury loses his eye’’ ‘’That joke made him look like an idiot’’ ‘’They could've done so much more epic how he loses the eye’’ well, yes I also hoped some Skrull doing that to him or whatever epic sh*t, but consider this, we knew Nick didn’t lose the eye, because in CA:TWS he reveals he still got the eye, but it is useless and looks some bad sh*t happened to him, him saying the last time he trusted somebody he lost his eye is kinda dramatic and exaggerated because he obviously trusts at least 1Coulson 2Nat 3Clint 4Maria so, uhm we know how sarcastic he is, the reason we take it seriously was because of the tone of the movie, After learning Talos wasn't that bad I said ok ok it’s gonna be the cat, and I didn’t bother me, it works in the movie... I don’t think this thing makes him be less cool, idk why y’all crying out there...

- fans are crying in anger because they ruined (Mandarin level) the Skrulls, omg how they dare! now NO ONE IS TAKING SERIOUSLY THOSE VILLAINS marvel always ruins their villains etc, erm yes this was quite the plot twists, I mean it’s no surprise the Kree were not so good? but it was more shoking Talos wasn’t bad BAD in fact many of us loved him (mainly because of Ben Mendelson erformance) and calm down in the movie is implied that those weren’t the only Skrulls on space, and maaaybe in the future we’ll see BAD BAD EVIL Skrulls

- ‘’But did they really have to come up with that silliness of the Avengers getting that name because of her?’’ No, they didn’t have to, but it helps to see and understand more how much impact Carol was for Nick’s life in his early days as Agent of Shield, it’s pulled out straight outta nowhere? yes, as said before if they’d focus more minutes of the movie to Carol’s life as a Pilot I think we would’ve swallowed the ‘’Carol Avenger Danvers’’ more easily, but it’s done, what can we do....

19. Favorite minions/henchmen

1. The Ginyu Force

A prominent team of elite freelance mercenaries in the service of Frieza, cosmic warlord and realtor, the Ginyu Force are a collection of goobers with a synchronized dance pattern, impossible not to love and full of character. Led by the big purple Captain Ginyu, his personality keeps the group in check, not just through force, or through his rather frightening ability to swap bodies and abilities with an opponent at will. Guldo can just fucking stop time, Recoome has high-endurance, Burter has incredible speed and Jeice has a host of different Ki blasts. They're the highest ranked warriors in Frieza's army, too, and the only ones whom he respects, which says a lot as to their combat prowess and ability to take over planets, although they do also their own code of honours and ethics within the group.

2. Gary Fischer, or Henchman 21, from Venture Bros

Genuine decent lad, nerd and best friend/number 2 to supervillain The Monarch, 21 has a long, illustrious and traumatic career in the butterfly-themed villain's service and has been with him from the most humble of beginnings through highs and lows of all kinds, and as of the most recent season, became his own villain. Originally kidnapped by Monarch at age 15, he rose through the ranks of the henchmen, befriended Henchman 24, was witness to his friend's gruesome death and subsequently became a massive badass, even being complimented by Brock Samson personally. Honestly, he's just a good character, one of the many better examples of the show's writing, and has a ponytail, which I can relate to.

3. The Enemy Stand Users from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

Dio's henchmen were many, some better than others, some absolutely lethal and some...not so much. Nevertheless, each one was unique and explored the early, mercurial concept of Stands that would become codified in later parts of the series. Early Stands were a lot more elemental and less incomprehensibly weird than later ones, although there's a few Stands (and their users) that show that Hirohiko Araki knew where he was going.

Stand: The Hanged Man User: J. Geil

Reprehensible murderer with two right hands J. Geil was the user of Hanged Man, a Stand with a sick ass design and power seemingly inspired by Candyman. Also one of my favourite Stands from the series as a whole. That's a pattern in a lot of Part 3 Stands, powers inspired by slasher movies. Hanged Man is made of light and can travel across reflective objects, killing from within reflections, any kind, mirrors, shattered glass, shiny coins, even eyeballs. It's a pretty terrifying long-range Stand, capable of silent assassination.

Stand: Cream User: Vanilla Ice

Quite possibly the worst example of Araki's now famous naming convention, Vanilla Ice and his Stand Cream are possibly some of the most intimidating, and would comfortable sit near the top with main villains through sheer horrific power. Cream is a towering, skull-faced monster who's ability is to fold into itself, also consuming its user, and create a sphere of nothingness that obliterates anything it touches. While in this mode, it is literally unstoppable and Vanilla Ice is completely untouchable, especially when made into a vampire by Dio. The only downside is that while like this, neither Ice nor Cream can see where it's going and usually resorts to just blasting around the place like a lunatic. Cream's physically destructive power is probably completely unmatched by any punch ghost or even by similar Part 4 Stand, The Hand, whose right hand can erase anything it touches, even space. Alas, Ice was so utterly fanatically devoted to Dio, that Iggy's momentary sand clone was enough to give the heroic Polnareff the eventual upper hand in defeating him.

Stand: Thoth User: Boingo

Younger Brother to Oingo, Boingo is a shy and reserved kid who relied on his big bro the protect him from anyone who would take advantage of his Stand, a manga that can completely and 100% accurately predict the future, but can't change it. What happens in it will always come to pass, as we discover over the two episodes in which Boingo and his Stand appear, lending at once some great comedy relief but also a tinge of deterministic horror as, in Part 6, protagonist Jotaro Kujo's death mirrors the one seen in Thoth in Part 3...

Animage June 2013: Highlight: Grand Prix Kobayashi Yuu (Kirino Ranmaru) and Oohara Takashi (Tsurugi Kyousuke) Interview

Translator’s Notes: THIS is the extent of Inazuma’s popularity in Japan! First place for three years in a row in one of the biggest anime magazines, Animage, not to mention a song from the anime being displayed on a huge screen in Shibuya! I’ve seen them – those screens are massive and I can’t believe IE GO was playing on one! Ares, I eagerly await you. Make my boys popular again~

Regarding the voting method for The 35th Anime Grand Prix: The target of the votes cast were characters who appeared from December 2012 - November 2012 (excluding flashback episodes). This includes Inazuma Eleven GO, Inazuma Eleven GO Chrono Stone, and Inazuma Eleven GO The Movie Kyuukyoku no Kizuna Gryphon, but all votes for characters that appear in more than one series were added together.

Since Kobayashi-san is used to taking many kinds of photos, even though it was her first time to use a bangasa (oil paper umbrella), as expected she looks wonderful with it~ By the way, the bouquet of flowers on the first page is, naturally, a bouquet of orchids – Ranmaru’s flower. ‘You made your Mom proud. Thank you!’ she said with a smile as bright as a bouquet of flowers~

Oohara Takashi

Oohara-san confessed nervously that he was not used to taking photos ‘It’s my weak point, so I’m really sorry,’. Not to mention, taking a photo alongside Kobayashi-san - ‘Taking a photo with a professional model – this kind of pressure is no joke!’. Don’t worry, you look really cool, Oohara-san~

Oohara/ Kobayashi: Amazing! Thank you so much!

First of all, since Kirino Ranmaru took 1st Place, and Tsurugi Kyousuke took 3rd place in the male character division, please share a few words about your victory.

Kobayashi: As with last year, to receive this title is a huge honour and I’m deeply moved. Since I have the wonderful opportunity to play Ranmaru-san, I want to congratulate him! And I also want to thank everyone who voted for him!

Oohara: Putting the fact that he was up against so many great characters aside, I was surprised Tsurugi came third. I really want to express my thanks. I really believe that it’s all thanks to everyone’s support that Tsurugi was able to come this far.

In addition, Tsurugi, Tenma and Aoi’s character song ‘Te Wo Tsunagou’ won first place in the anime song division.

Both: Ooh! (Applause)

Oohara: That was unexpected (laughs). But to be honest, I was really pleased with Tsurugi’s ‘Darou?’. I have a feeling I won’t get another chance in my life to say a better ‘darou?’ than that… Ahh, I got a little carried away.

Kobayashi: Get carried away!

Oohara: No, it’s all thanks to KMC-san (T-Pistonz + KMC) - it was their idea when they wrote the lyrics. I’m really happy that I got to sing with Tenma and Aoi-chan. Thank you so much.

Next, while we call out a few of the top places in each division, let’s look back over the past few years. Second place in the TV Show division was episode 24 ‘Chikai wa kono Kata no moto ni’, the last episode of the Medieval France arc.

Kobayashi: I remember those few episodes well. Even just hearing the word ‘Kata’ (flag) brings back memories. Ranmaru-san was troubled over what kind of role he played for the team, felt some jealousy towards Shindou-san, and after all that thanks to Kariya pushing him forward he was able to travel to Medieval France. I thought together with Ranmaru-san about what kind of role he should play to benefit the team to the best of his ability. I was also moved by Ranmaru-san supported Jeanne-san with those words of encouragement. I thought he was speaking to himself too with those words.

What did you think of his Mixi Max with Jeanne?

Kobayashi: His hair suddenly grew longer, and he wore glasses; it was really beautiful. I wanted to congratulate Ranmaru-san on his full-body transformation.

Oohara: Chrono Stone episode 21 is a top contender for one of my favourite episodes too.

Kobayashi: Oh, thank you!

Oohara: The catalyst for everyone’s Mixi Max is different for each person, but in Kirino-san’s case, he first had to accept himself - he supported Jeanne with his words of encouragement ‘If I can do it, so can you!’. Then it happened all of a sudden. I also like the words Kirino-san said just after he summoned his keshin Brynhildr. ‘My role isn’t to stand at the front line. In order for Shindou and everyone else to focus on attacking, my job is to support everyone!” is what he said.

Kobayashi: That’s it exactly! Thank you for remembering!

Oohara: It made me think that apart from participating in the heart of the battle, it also takes strength to encourage and protect.

Kobayashi: Listening to Oohara-san talk about it now makes me think that everyone in the Raimon Eleven also feels that Ranmaru-san is looking out for them. They know that in a team people who defend are just as essential as people who attack.

To continue, 3rd place was Inazuma Eleven GO episode 44 ‘Ten made Todoke! Minna no sakka!!’, the climax of the first series.

Kobayashi: Fire Tornado DD was so cool!

Oohara: They finally mastered it! That’s how I felt. Could you say it was the showpiece of the first series? After winning the tournament, Tenma says ‘Soccer is definitely happy too. Right, Tsurugi?’ and Tsurugi replies ‘Don’t ask me!’ but in reality I really liked that conversation.

From Oohara-san’s point of view, how was the young Tsurugi that Kobayashi-san played?

Oohara: If you take away Tsurugi’s thorniness, he becomes a very honest child. I thought it was wonderful. Especially the scene where he cries out ‘Nii-chan not being able to play soccer any more is a lie, right??’ - I was really moved. Back then, before we recorded, Kobayashi-san came to me and said very politely ‘This time I’ll be playing young Tsurugi. Thank you for the honor,’. Actually, I should be the one saying thank you! (laughs)

Kobayashi: It was a great honour.

Oohara: Naturally I did kind of want to try playing young Tsurugi too, but I think I couldn’t beat Kobayashi-san’s performance.

Speaking of Tsurugi, he’s had a pretty rough life. He underwent Spartan-style training on a solitary island at distant sea.

Kobayashi: That’s one of Tsurugi’s attractive points, that there’s a lot to him. And when he’s crying out the name of his special moves, it looks really cool. Even though he’s normally calm and composed, he suddenly bursts into blue flames. It always makes me think, ‘how wonderful!’ after recording!

Kirino’s development happened thanks to Kariya nonchalantly pushing him forward.

To continue, in fourth place was episode 29 ‘Jidai o tsukuru otoko tachi’.

Oohara: That’s the episode Tsurugi Mixi Maxed with Okita-san. I was interested in how Tsurugi would persuade Okita-san, but it was more to do with his actions and behavior rather than persuading him with words. I thought that was very Tsurugi-ish.

Kobayashi: Tsurugi is always calm, and everyone watches him from behind, while he tells things like it is. He’s quite intellectual. That episode showed another side to him too. Okita-san might have reminded him of his brother, Yuuichi-san~

Oohara: His brother being in hospital has taken his toll on him.

Kobayashi: I think that’s understandable.

Oohara: Oh, thankfully Nishiki-san and Sakamoto-san also Mixi Maxed. Since they have the same first name, when Nishiki-san Mixi Maxed I thought it was amusing that he said Sakamoto’s full name - ‘Mixi Max - Sakamoto Ryouma!’. I also like the relationship between Zanark and Nishiki. Since the ending was a little bit rushed, I wanted to see more.

Fifth place was episode 18 ‘Minna ga kaettekita!’, the episode where Kinako and Zanark appears and there’s quite a bit of drama.

Oohara: The one where Kurama-san used ‘Winder while wearing his casual clothes. Against some delinquents.

Kobayashi: That’s right, a casual-clothes Sidewinder. There was many different scenes of many differents places in that episode. I was happy about that. Stuff that hasn’t appeared yet in the main story. Even though every character has surely got their own lives, we could only imagine what they’re doing in their personal time so far.

That episode became a turning point for Kirino.

Kobayashi: Ranmaru-san started to show he’s worrying over Shindou-san. Since these feelings are a delicate part of Ranmaru-san’s heart, I tried my very best to portray that was gently as possible. But Kariya-san, with those wonderfully sharp eyes of his, notice Ranmaru-san worrying and reached out to him. I was really glad.

Oohara: Kariya’s developed quite a bit, in these surroundings.

Kobayashi: He has. He went as far as to feign a stomach ache and gave up his place to Ranmaru-san for the Time Jump, since there was a limit. Even the way he talked to Ranmaru-san about it was very Kariya-san-ish. He read Ranmaru-san’s mind. Ranmaru-san, you really owe Kariya-san one!

Oohara: Since we haven’t really seen such a human-like drama like this before, I was happy. I thought it was very tenacious.

In the new series, the troubles continue for our Playmaker!

Now we’d like to ask about what you think of the male character division. Following Kirino, Tsurugi and Kariya, Shindou took 9th place.

Oohara: As always, Shindou-san had a year full of worries (dry laugh). Since he had the best view of everyone’s individual situations, I felt it was expected of him to worry so much but he’s gone through a lot.

Kobayashi: Yes, in the new series too he’s also put through a lot of trouble…

Oohara: Soon enough, there’s going to be a hole in his heart with worry.

Kobayashi: Oh no! We need to take care of him. Ranmaru-san, I definitely want you to escort him if he needs to go to hospital! In the last series when Shindou had to go to the infirmary, Ranmaru-san escorted him there!

When Shindou was Captain of El Dorado Team 02, that was also pretty tough.

Oohara: Out of al three teams, I think Shindou got the worst deal (laughs).

At that time, Kariya was bickering with Beta and started running wildly.

Kobayashi: If Ranmaru-san was there in that situation, I think he’d definitely scold Kariya-san. While I think his mischievousness is one of Kariya’s attractive points, it was just too much for Shindou-san at that time! (laughs)

Kobayashi-san, you’re still a huge Shindou fan like always?

Kobayashi: Yes, I love him! As Tenma-san adapts to being Captain, Shindou-san supports him and looks out for the team. He’s really a person that all the members can rely on! A big part of why I love him is also because of Saiga Mitsuki-san (Shindou’s voice actor).

Oohara: Oh yeah.

Kobayashi: Saiga-san also really looks after everyone after we finish recording. She’s a kind and wonderful person.

When Kirino was watching El Dorado Team 2’s match who was constantly muttering to himself ‘Shindou, Shindou…’

Kobayashi: Yes!

Oohara: In the original script he said ‘Now of all times I can’t be by Shindou’s side…’

Kobayashi: That’s right, he did!

Oohara: I thought ‘Oh, that’s a very typical thing of Kirino-san to say!’ but in the final version it was omitted.

But even without him saying it, the viewers could definitely understand it’s what he was thinking. (laughs)

Kobayashi: But I really, really wanted to say that line so it’s a pity! That’s what I really thought Ranmaru-san felt, from the bottom of my heart. His was urging Shindou-san on with his gaze alone.

Oohara: Kirino-san and Shindou-san have a bond of trust so deep that it would make you jealous. You can really feel those two support each other together. I want to see them together when they were younger. I wonder how they met?

Kobayashi: Me too, I want to see that too! Of course, I’d also like to see more about Tsurugi-san and his brother. I think their relationship as brothers is great.

Since Kobayashi-san is an only child it seems like you admire sibling relationships.

Kobayashi: I do!

Oohara: I wanted a younger sister (laughs).

Kobayashi: I like Oohara-san’s older sister a lot!

Okay then, Oohara-san – out of Kinako (Female Character Division 1st Place) and Beta (same division 3rd place), who would you prefer to have as a younger sister?

Oohara: Kinako!

Kobayashi: That was a quick reply!

Oohara: What I like about Kinako is that she’s so innocent and she really thinks about the feelings of everyone around her, and is kind to everyone. It left a big impression on me when such a cheerful kid like her joined the story during such a difficult time for the Raimon members.

Kobayashi: Her first appearance was funny too. She was wearing the number 10 uniform.

Oohara: Tsurugi lost it to her in a shoot off.

Kobayashi: I’d like to see that story drawn one day. Kinako-san’s Mochi Mochi Kinako Mochi looks delicious. I want to eat it!

Oohara: As for Beta on the other hand, her cuteness and her brutality are two sides of the same coin – I think I like that. She’s a little bit scary, but it’s quite realistic. It’s refreshing to see her voice actor change her voice from sweet to scary in an instant.

Kobayashi: Beta-san makes me a little bit nervous.

Oohara-san and Kobayashi-san’s personal Anime Grand Prix are?

So, we’d like to hear about your personal choices out of Inazuma for the Anime Grand Prix.

Oohara: Out of the TV series, if I look from Tsurugi’s point of view, it’s Inazuma Eleven GO episode 41 ‘Kessen! Amano Mikado Stadium!’.

The one where you practice Fire Tornedo DD.

Oohara: Tsurugi said to Tenma ‘You showed me how soccer should be played,’. They’ve come this far and he was able to express his feelings in words to Tenma. Therefore, I think it was a very important scene. Of course, there are a lot of episodes that I really like, but for Tsurugi episode 41 is unforgettable.

As for the Male Character Division?

Oohara: I wish I could say Sangoku, but (laughs) I’ll have to go with Tenma. If it wasn’t for Tenma, I don’t think Tsurugi could have played real soccer again, nor could he have made such good friends and even his relationship with his brother might have become strained. Tsurugi is who he is today mostly because of Tenma.

You always say you like Sangoku, but what is it about him that you like?Oohara: He was cool from his very first line! I thought his conversation with Shindou-san was really cool. Didn’t you feel it?

Kobayashi: I felt it! The whole team loves Sangoku-san. The time he invited Tenma-san to his house and made roll cabbage for him – I get the feeling whatever he served would have been delicious.

Oohara: All in all, I think he’s a good man, with a good balance.

Kobayashi: When he entrusted the goalkeeper position to Shinsuke too, that was very masculine. No matter how many goals are scored he stays optimistic.

Oohara: He keeps standing up again and again. He doesn’t get discouraged! (laughs)

When Sangoku-san speaks, everyone becomes roused up (laughs). To continue, your second-place character.

Oohara: My favourite female character is Kinako-chan. I was happy when she gave Tsurugi candy. He was standing a little bit further away from everyone, so she took the time to go over to him and he said the candy was ‘Umai’ (*delicious – masculine version) (laughs). In the Anime Song Division, I liked the movie version of the song ‘Niji o Koete Ten Made Todoke!’. I always liked Ten Made Todoke, and Terasaki Yuuka-san (Tenma’s voice actor) said that this song has the power to bring tears to your eyes. You can really feel the characters power up. And in the opening, they literally soar to the heavens and fly through space (laughs).

Kobayashi-san, it’s your turn.

Kobayashi: It’s so hard to pick a favourite episode from the TV series… From Ranmaru-san’s point of view, the Medieval France arc, episodes 18 – 21. In those four episodes I became completely absorbed in playing him. Especially in the last episode, 21, since Ranmaru-san was helping Jeanne-san and everyone else it was very moving. As for the male character section… I gotta pick the whole team!

Oohara: Huh, you can do that? I should have said that too! (laughs)

You feel like you can’t pick just one?

Kobayashi: I just really like everyone! Shindou-san, Kariya-san, and of course Tsurugi-san and Tenma-san. So please let me pick everyone! What should I say for the Female Character Division? I really like Kinako-san and all of the managers, but I think I’ll go with Jeanne-san. She made Ranmaru-san’s heart stronger.

Finally, the Anime Song Division – the ending theme Kirino sang ‘Bokutachi no Shiro’ was left out of the vote ranking this time.

Kobayashi: In the TV series, Bokutachi no Shiro was a duet between Tenma-san and Tsurugi-san – it was wonderful~ Everyone please vote for it next year! Okay, I pick ‘Te o Tsunagou’. I thought it was a wonderful song, like something they’d sing at a get-together or party. It was refreshing to see everyone wearing headbands, and you get the feeling that anything is possible. I once saw that ending displayed on a big screen in Shibuya.

Oohara: Seriously??

Kobayashi: Yes! I just happened to be walking through the street and by chance I saw it playing on the big screen. I was really moved. So it’s left a deep impression on me.

So Tsurugi’s ‘Darou?’ rang out for all of Shibuya to hear?

Kobayashi: Yes~ Tsurgugi-san, you were so cool~

Does Kirino appear in Galaxy?

Finally, let’s talk about the highlights of Inazuma Eleven GO Galaxy. In any case, the first match against Teikoku was a bit of a mess, and ended in a loss.

Oohara: Right? I wonder what’s going to happen afterwards. None of us were told anything about what happens next.

Kobayashi: Yes. From the title ‘Galaxy’, I wonder does it imply something to do with outer space?

Oohara: It’s got the longest name so far. It’s really thanks to everyone’s support that the Inazuma series has come this far. From here one too I think exciting things are going to happen, so please continue to support us.

Kirino and Tsurugi haven’t had many chances to interact a lot up until now - what do you think would make them bond?

Oohara: Since Kirino was very annoyed by Kariya, he asked Tsurugi ‘Don’t you think he’s a Seed?’ but Tsurugi told him something like, ‘Chigaimasu yo~’ (I don’t think so).

Kobayashi: Wah, Tsurugi-san! (She smiles FULL of affection)

Oohara:Well, wasn’t that what he said?

Kobayashi: Yes! They had the conversation under the shade of a big tree (laughs). I’m sorry, but the way Oohara-san said that just now was just wonderful! (calms down). For sure, the first time Tsurugi used keigo left a deep impression. I thought he was someone who understood the importance of being polite to his upperclassmen.

Oohara: He’s quite sportsmen-like, Tsurugi. (Note: Sports clubs are particularly strict about kouhai using keigo with senpai)

When he was a Seed, the importance of sportsmanship was probably pounded into him.

Oohara: Tsurugi’s social etiquette is better than you think. He shares that in common with Kirino-san... I think they could bond over some kind of volunteer activity. Like cleaning the school.

Kobayashi: Wah, souji! Yes, they’d do it to the best of their ability!

Oohara: Also, since Kirino is a second year, he could tutor Tsurugi in the library.

A TRUE KING OK. part of the beagle line with PCY and baekhyun. when he smiles his face is literally :} = has The Best Mouth. doesn’t think junmyeon is very funny but is simultaneously really soft for him, and will usually be among the first to praise him. is actually married to minseok - super close and have the most beautiful friendship. a literal actual ball of energy, loud as shit, and usually yelling WHY?? when he has no liquid left in his body and is sweating out his soul, he will still scream. insanely strong, stable vocals. i repeat: insanely. strong. vocals. also, coming hard for dance-line. part of EXO sub unit EXO-CBX with baekhyun and minseok.

Byun Baekhyun

proudly gets to hold the position of tallest member of EXO-CBX. auditioned at the same time as jongdae and is know for his enthusiastic dancing. jongin once said that when he saw baek dancing it was a mess, and baek confirmed this by saing ‘it looked like mollusks dancing.’ body is double jointed and when he extends his arms it, they look like lightning bolts; thinks this might also be a disease but is ok with it. voice of literal, actual angels. looks better in smoky eye makeup than most models and is king of selfies. literally taught fans how to take a selfie. once was on instagram live and made me stare at a damn wall for 30 minutes before playing yixing’s solo album.

Zhang Yixing

Position: (3/3) lead dancer; vocalist; light of everyone’s life

trained the longest of any member! trained for seven (7) years before making his debut with EXO, resulting in him training with most of SHINee. makes awful dad jokes and has an oddball sense of humour, but we cherish him anyway. secretly keeping abs beneath his soft tee shirts. nicknamed junmoney because he treated a lot of the members in their early days when they didn’t have money, and now they all think he’s rich. the doorman at his apartment calls him Handsome Man. messiest member but also among the most humble. always makes sure to thank everyone at awards ceremonies, refusing to leave anyone who helped them out. great at math. has a solo song called curtain that literally brought me and most of the people i know to tears within the first 90 seconds.

oldest member of EXO while simultaneously refusing to age. honestly, he has not aged at all. he might be a wizard. hugely popular in korea and is also holding abs of steel beneath his soft tee shirts. member of EXO subunit EXO-CBX. literally can rock any hair colour. currently getting his Ph.D and will be called Doctor Kim, i die. a general soft boy who is also a cat, but WILL WRECK YOU. boy is a pimp and will come for your ass if he detects even a moment of weakness.
