Just found out the last two episodes of HDM are already available, and currently hesitating on whether or not I should watch them right now.

On the one hand, I really really want to.

On the other... I may need more time to prepare to have my heart broken again.

I know the main reason I compare His Dark Materials and Chaos Walking is because they were a recommendation from the same person and the MCs are 12-13 years old but also

In both plots the MC's innocence is crucial for the story. In Lyra's case it's more of a big deal and she remains unaware of her own identity even when it ends

an MC that's so driven by their emotions falling for a calm and collected love interest

the reason Lyra decides to help Will and Todd decides to help Viola are both basically "fuck it,I just gotta help them!"

the main villian is a associated with the Church. Aaron who's a priest and then Mayor Prentiss who lives in a cathedral and makes himself a God. And Mrs Coulter who literally works for the church

a character who works againat the church but does a lot of questionable things. Mistress Coyle is a lot more likeable than Lord Asriel and has a better reason for her actions though (I love him but it's true)

the development of the plot: starting from a specific assignment to get to a place (going to the north to find Roger, bringing Viola to Haven) -> a big betrayal/trap at the end of Book 1 -> book 2 being basically about preparations for the Big War -> book 3 being the Big War -> SAD FUCKING ENDING

The themes: Horrors inflicted by the Church: controling people, harming children (something something seperating children (and people) from dæmons make them mindless and easier to control) or Horrors inflicted by Toxic Masculinty: controling people, war crimes, harming children (by forcing them to murder and use I Am The Circle and The Circle is Me which is brainwashing)

The MCs' love for each other plays a crucial part in the plot. It's much more important in His Dark Materials because You Know, but even in Chaos Walking - Viola saves Todd from "falling" Viola helps him get back up, everything they do in book 2 is an attempt to find each other. They are loyal to each other before anything else.

If you don't mind me asking, who is your favorite author or what are some books you really love? Your artwork and poems mean a lot to me and they feel filled with so much implied narrative. I'd love to know the stories that are close to your heart!

Aw this is a nice thing to ask. Cormac McCarthy is my favorite writer! His books have no peers for me. I recently finished The Crossing and it's my favorite of all though it had me crying miserably throughout. Beautiful, awful.

Some other books that I love are The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, Watership Down by Richard Adams and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.
