ღ eren loves fun, non conventional dates. He doesn’t mind the dressing up and fancy dinners from time to time but he much rather scoop you up with a bouquet of flowers, a little gift bag filled with snacks and something he picked out because he heard you talking about it on a random Tuesday one time. Your fits, I could see him in some Dunks, a hoodie and sweats (or shorts and a baseball jersey) and you in a sundress..looking all cute. He’d want to do something like a little carnival where they serve all these fair foods that are incredibly unhealthy but soooo good and he’d be eating it all and he can show off by winning you a giant stuffed animal he totally doesn’t brag about the whole night. “I’m the best, baby. I told you.” 🙄 he’d love to do go kart racing, mini golf or even an arcade or roller skating. He’s competitive so he might get a lil carried away but it’s all love! Y’all would have the best time and he’d constantly check to make sure you’re having a good time because he can’t stop smiling. Of course, spending the day with you is enough to keep him happy for weeks. Might end the night with a little smoke session + a movie (and maybe a lil sum else if you’re up for it. (mainly him eating you out until you fall asleep 😩)

ღ armin is obviously the inquisitive and intelligent type so he’d want your date to be as educational as it is fun. Of course, you love it all the same because you guys pick each other’s brains on things all the time. He’d take you to a museum, where they have all of these cool exhibits, explaining everything to you like a little personal tour guide. and a gift shop full of trinkets that he wants to buy for you. He sees you ogling the crystal and rock display while asking him all of these questions so now you’ve got two hundred dollars worth of malachite and amethyst keychains, displays and whatever else you wanted! “These are so beautiful! Thank you, Armie!” “It nearly as gorgeous as you but I’m happy you like them.” (bonus: I could see him taking you to a play/amphitheater as well) you guys would visit your favorite ramen + boba shop, just laughing and talking..enjoying each other’s company. You’d probably where coordinating outfits..something with an earthy green tone and super cute! You’d end the night back at his place where you guys would probably listen to music and just chill (maybe a little making out + spooning depending on the mood) and you’d fall asleep in each other’s arms.

ღ jean is all about the flare and spoiling his lady. He’s a gentleman, a romantic through and through. He doesn’t do anything halfway and spares no expense for his lady for a special night out. I think he’s the type of man to take the reigns and plan everything (not in a controlling way but you like when he shows that dominance) including your outfit, surprising you with a dress and heels you couldn’t stop eyeing at the mall so he had it delivered to your house, along with a box of eternal roses with a sweet little card and some adorable note that’s like “just like these flowers, may our love last forever.” And you’re about to sob! But you have to finish getting ready because he’ll be there at eight on the dot so you guys can make those reservations at that new five star French restaurant that just opened. Of course, he pulls up in some expensive two seater and the outfit to match. A really nice suit and my God, does he look good. But his eyes are all on you. “You look stunning, my love.” Opening your door and everything. He loves holding your hand while driving, stealing glances of you the whole night. When you guys get to dinner, he’s helping you order things, speaking French to the waiter (so attractive 😩) and EVERYTHING is delicious. Including the escargot, which you had reservations on. “Not bad, right?” “It’s so good!” He would also rent you guys a fancy hotel room across town, where he’d have rose petals scattered about the room, strawberries, chocolate and champagne waiting for you guys and he’d spend the night sweet talking you whilst you guys drank and ate. You’d end the night in the warm bubble bath, cuddled up and touching all over each other. (And getting a lil freaky after that liquor gets in your system) Just a nice, romantic evening.

ღ connie is gonna bring the party wherever he is! Mans just loves a good time. I feel like he too won’t be much into the whole fancy dinners and flare but he would plan something super unique and fun. You’ll be chilling and he’ll be like ‘hey, there’s a Paint and Sip not too far from here. You wanna go?!” All excited and of course, you’d be more than happy to.” He’d be the main one in there dancing and singing, just bringing allll the energy! Like it’s never a dull moment with Constance! Afterwards, he’d take you to a food truck or a really niche spot in the heart of downtown that he grew up on (I see him as Dominican/Afro Latina obvs). And he just wants to share it with you! “Here, mama. Try this..I think you’ll like it.” And don’t let them be playing some Latin music, he’d have you in the middle of the restaurant or the sidewalk, doing Bachata. He would be the best! I could also see you guys having a fun night in, consisting of you guys cooking your favorite dishes, getting a bunch of nail polishes and painting each others nails or him letting you dye his hair.

 Giacomo

-          Giacomo is a pretty chill guy, so while I think he’s sad that Penny left he’s happy you stepped up and took over. He has most likely looked up to you for a while since you were such a strong trainer and a good person.

-          Your Munna and Meowstic love him, if you can’t find the two its cuz they’re with Giacomo again. Your Munna especially loves to listen to Giacomo’s music.

-          He makes you a special team boss mixtape, like your own theme song for battle. He thinks that since you’re the boss you need a cool theme to go along with it, even if you were kinda flustered when he first gifted it to you.

-          You and Giacomo hang out when you just need a break, be it going for walks or going to one of your places to watch movies or listen to music.

 Mela

-          Mela in the beginning wouldn’t want you to become the new leader since she still hopes Penny will come back, but when she sees how great you are at being the leader and that Penny isn’t coming back, so accepts it and backs you up 100%

-          Your Bronzong loves to hang around Mela for some reason. In the beginning she tries to make the pokemon leave since the large cuddly pokemon takes away from her tough appearance.

-          After your Bronzong completely wipes the floor with some bullies though, she accepts its presence and is worried when it doesn’t show up.

-          Shes shy about showing her true personality most of the time but she is open to you and your friends, and Mela finds comfort in spending time with you because she can be herself.

-          You inspire her to want to get stronger since you are strong enough to become team stars leader, so you are someone she sees as a close friend but also someone to look up to.

 Atticus

-          Atticus was most likely the one to suggest you become the new leader of the team after Penny disappears, seeing as you are a powerful and noble fighter with strong morals in his eyes.

-          He would create a cool outfit that would fit your role as leader of team star and a psychic trainer, and he is very proud to see you in it for the first time, he especially likes to see it in battle.

-          He would even go as far as to create matching outfits for your pokemon, Gothorita would especially love the outfits and since that pokemon is the one your seen most with, it has many multiple outfits to match yours.

-          Atticus doesn’t feel scared to be himself and speak about his interests around you, as he doesn’t feel like you will judge him for the way he speaks or carries himself, it helps boost his confidence and make him a stronger person.

-          You motivate him to be himself and not let others’ opinions of him bother him too much, and he is happy with his decision to offer you up as the next leader of team star.

 Ortega

-          Ortega isn’t sure about making you the next leader of team star, but his opinion quickly changes when he sees how you are able to support everyone and make them feel more motivated and sure of themselves.

-          He would build you your own starmobile that would match your use of psychic types, using colors and shapes to make it something that truly fits you as a person.

-          Ortega would be bummed out when he has to go to piano lessons and stuff like that, but you always step in and take over for him when he has to leave and write up a report on the happenings during his time away, just to make him feel better.

-          Your Gothorita and Girafarig would love Ortega, always coming out of their pokeballs to greet him and play with his pokemon, you both use the excuse of your pokemon being good friends to hang out some more between duties as leader of the team and a team boss.

 Eri

-          Eri was at first against you becoming the new leader of team star since she hoped Penny would come back, but when she sees how you take care of everyone and do your best she relents and decides to support you as much as possible.

-          Like the others she helped you train your pokemon to be stronger, and she’s proud when your team becomes stronger than her own. She’s also the one who helped you evolve your Ralts into a Gallade, so the pokemon likes to spend time with Eri.

-          She always makes sure you are taking care of yourself and not pushing yourself too hard, since she knows being the leader is hard work. She doesn’t want you to burn yourself out, its also because she fears to some extent that you will leave too.

-          Eri would bring you lunches and snacks for your pokemon every now and then, just so you two could take a break together away from all the hard work as leader and boss. She still works very hard to protect the team, but she also makes sure to protect you, even if its from yourself as times.

A stream is starting, the scene is empty, and faint sounds can be heard from where the mic is setup. The scene shifts a few times.

Donnie: Which set do you want?... Yes, it's important, you're model is going to be sitting in the scene for the stream... Also did you pick a model? Oh good!

The scene stops on a room with cute stuffed animals of different shapes, sizes, and type.

Donnie: This one? Okay, now to get the game set up.

River swims in and 'moves' the gameplay box around. And places the chat box just under it. They hover above where the model will appear.

Donnie: Okay everyone, we finally got the model fully rigged properly, and Red needs to stay off his ankle for a while, he's not used to this, River!

River: Haters with be knocked out, and maybe sent to the great beyond if they don't stay nice!

River chirps as Raphs model gives her some pets and scratches. His model has a very happy expression and his tail's wagging fast. Chat is of course going nuts again for multiple reasons.

Raph: Oh yeah, let's start the game! What's Red playing again?

River: Pokémon Scarlet!

Raph: Yes, Red's been meaning to play that, but work, training, and events keep my schedule pretty full.

He plays for a while, taking a hot minute to customize the character, choose his starter (he chose Fuecoco, but was very close to going with one of the others). He starts to talk about his job, the other wrestlers, some of the 'story lines' they did, and events.

River: Someone wants to know if there's a women's league where you work!

Raph: Yeah, and they're all amazing! I know I shouldn't have favorites, but Star Warrior is a favorite face fighter in their league. She's so on a different level, and her moves are so cool! She's gotta whole space theme to her, and it reminds me of that one Jupiter Jim movie!

He rambles for a hot minute. Many in chat are deeply invested in him talking, others are trying to find which league he's apart of, but are not finding any known leagues with all of these stage names in the same place.

Raph: She is also an amazing person outside of the persona!

River: You sound like you have a crush!

Raph and his model get even more red, and goes quiet. River cutely and innocently tilts her head.

River: Red?

Raph squeaks, lets out a set of embarrassed chirp sounds. Chat is going nuts.

Raph: Hey, let's go to the first Gym! The bug one right?!

He avoids the question and the gets distracted by many Pokémon he hasn't seen before. He eventually goes back to talking about his job purposely avoiding directly mentioning 'Star Warrior' unless it was to mention an event or match. Chat is not very convinced, and believe he has a crush, but respect him enough to not get knocked out.

I have a question. I don't know if this has been asked this before. Why does Roxanne fall for Megamind? I'm crazy happy they end up together but I still wonder why? Most people were scared of him until he saved the day. He kidnapped Roxanne all the time. She was super pissed at him for a while there. He's also not human. How does the whole attraction thing even work when you aren't the same species? Because, yeah, Megs is cool af, but an ET with blue skin and a big head probably wasn't the star of many Metro City girl's wet dreams. Maybe after he started the hero gig since people are just like that but not before. But Roxanne kind of flirted with him before he turned good or anything. So I guess she had to see something in him other people didn't. What do you think it was?

MEGAMIND FAN THEORY THURSDAY: Roxanne’s Attraction

Yes, I’m back again with another Megamind Fan Theory Thursday! Special thanks to this week’s anonymous contributor! I appreciate you, whoever you may be! I also want to express my sincere gratitude to all those who read, like, and reblog these posts… Knowing that you share the love for this fandom is the reason why I continue dedicating time, whenever possible, to researching and writing about these theories. This blog wouldn’t exist without you. Thank you!

If, however, you are that one individual who has inexplicably insisted upon reading two years' worth of articles about a film you still haven’t watched… I continue to have faith you’ll one day see the light. Or at least the movie. Hope springs eternal.

In the meantime: SPOILER WARNING!

We’re all human—at least, I assume most people reading this probably are—and that means we’re imperfect. One of the sadly common flaws of our species is a tendency to be rather judgmental, sometimes without just cause, and we certainly see that occurring in the film Megamind. After all, the alien genius was left to be raised in a high-security jail among presumably dangerous inmates simply due to his appearance and was pressured into supervillainy in part because he was different. Given that fact, along with the fear and ostracization many apparently showed him, there is reason to wonder exactly what first attracted Roxanne Ritchi to the blue man. After all, as today’s contributor pointed out, most humans, if asked to describe their perfect match, might not immediately default to “an alien with a large head and a complexion of a popular primary color, as a random nonspecific example.” Yet Roxanne is most certainly attracted to Megamind. Of course, many fan suggest that she must find him handsome—it’s doubtful she’d be in a romantic relationship with him by the end of the film if she thought him ugly—but they also contend that, given her disinterest in Metroman, the attraction must be more than physical. The question is: what qualities made her fall for him rather than an ordinary human or the supposedly perfect former Defender? Can fan theories shed any light? Let’s take a look!

Not Your Average Damsel

Some may be tempted to suggest that this is merely a typical case of the damsel falling for her rescuer. After all, that’s one of the common superhero tropes, isn’t it? Even Megamind himself, while talking to Titan after training, said that saving a lady was the way to her heart. The problem with this is that, in that particular instance, the blue man was completely and undeniably wrong. His love interest’s attraction had little or nothing to do with him whisking her out of Titan’s murderous clutches.

There are three reasons why fan theories rightfully dispute the concept of Megamind and Roxanne sharing a stereotypical hero/damsel romance. Firstly, the movie itself is well known for subverting superhero genre norms, and indeed that seems to have been one of the major themes of the narrative. Given how much effort was put into turning such conventions on their heads, sometimes even lampooning them, it’s extremely doubtful that the film’s creators would have suddenly adopted such stereotypes in this one case.

Secondly, there is Roxanne herself. This character is spunky, independent, and not easily cowed. During Megamind and Titan’s second fight, we see her holding a broken street sign, preparing to join in the fray. That’s a far cry from the expected behavior of a supposedly helpless damsel. Furthermore, despite being rescued by Metroman multiple times—hundreds, in fact, according to the prequel comic The Reign of Megamind—she states outright that they “were never a couple.” That alone clearly dismisses the idea of Roxanne swooning for the blue man simply because he rescues her. If she were the sort to do that, she would have fallen for Metroman as well—especially considering that most of the people around her apparently believed him to be Mr. Perfect.

The third and final reason is one we’ve touched on before. It bears repeating, however, as it truly puts the proverbial nail in the coffin of the Typical Damsel argument. As our contributor mentioned, Roxanne canonically was attracted to Megamind while he was still a supervillain. During the kidnapping scene, when the blue man draws close and practically purrs a vaguely suggestive line—“such… tricks won’t work on me”—in the reporter’s ear, rather than showing reluctance she asks him to “please talk slower.” Megamind, of course, responds by calling her “Temptress.” Tellingly, while she doesn’t acknowledge it, Roxanne also doesn’t object to the epithet. Fan theories suggest that this obviously indicates there was already attraction on both sides, although its extremely doubtful either would have ever acted upon it. (As a well-known television reporter, Roxanne may have been too well aware of the potential destruction of her career, and Megamind, despite having her at his mercy numerous times, was obviously too goodhearted to make a move without invitation. You can read more about the latter in Megamind and Masculinity.)

Smart is Hot

This, then, leaves us with the question of exactly what did attract Roxanne to Megamind. Does she simply have a thing for blue aliens, or is it something more than that? One fan theory suggests that the answer lies in a line that was cut from the final version of the screenplay. Initially, after telling Megamind, who was then disguised as Bernard, that Metroman had never been her type, she added that she’d always preferred brains over brawn. That is interesting because intelligence is certainly something the former supervillain has in abundance. In a previous Fan Theory Thursday post, Why Kidnap Roxanne, we explored the likelihood of Megamind’s clearly ingenious species being naturally attracted to intellect. The thing is that he may not have been the only one. Merriam-Webster defines the term sapiosexual as someone who experiences “sexual or romantic attraction to highly intelligent people.” As you can guess from the mere fact that this word exists, it is fully possible for some humans to possess this inborn predisposition. Many fans believe that Roxanne Ritchi is, indeed, a sapiosexual, and this may be one reason why she would fall head-over-heels for a super-genius, alien or otherwise. In fact, as discussed in How Smart is Megamind, the blue man may quite literally be the smartest person on Earth, making him extremely alluring to someone already attracted by brilliance.

Indeed, according to fan theories, several things about Roxanne’s character support this idea. She was originally imagined as an investigative reporter, so she’s obviously not stupid. She appears to dislike Hal not based upon his appearance but rather due to his lack of intelligence and his constant harassment. Perhaps the most telling evidence, however, comes from comparing her reactions to Megamind and his former nemesis. As mentioned before, Metroman is supposed to be most people’s idea of masculine perfection. Simply look at the way his fans, especially the female ones, behave during the opening of his museum. Add to this the fact that he is largely based on Superman and Elvis Presley—both of whom were, at one time, considered extremely handsome—and we can safely assume that Metroman is supposed to be some sort of Adonis. He’s also wealthy, famous, and powerful; three qualities that many people might consider great advantages in a potential boyfriend. Nonetheless, Roxanne Ritchi shows no interest at all in him.

Conversely, while dating Megamind in his guise as “Bernard,” the woman’s attention—and perhaps her heart—seem to be captured by his conversation, intellect, wit, and humor. She initially begins spending time with him because she believes him to possess expert knowledge concerning Megamind as well as enough intelligence to help her decipher the supervillain’s plan. She clearly enjoys having long conversations with him, laughing at his humorous stories, and reading books together in a library. Granted, the last was done for research purposes in the film, but the Bad Blue Brilliant comics show Megamind and Roxanne planning a date at a library after the blue man has become a hero. Obviously a shared love of books was something Roxanne liked about him. It appears that such traits attracted the reporter while riches and model-perfect looks couldn’t.

Of course, Roxanne rejects the former villain after she learns who he really is, but one Megamind fan theory suggests that that was almost certainly not because of him, but rather because of his actions. It makes sense. She is hurt and infuriated that he lied to her, and she makes her objections to some of his past behaviors known in no uncertain terms. However, when considering the charges she lays at his proverbial doorstep, it’s clear that what she cannot abide is his criminal behavior. She accuses him of murder, taking control of the city, and tricking her. Furthermore, she seems convinced that his only purpose in disguising himself was to toy with her emotions for his own sadistic amusement.

As the film progresses, however, she realizes that he did not actually kill Metroman and that he was sincere about their relationship. That, in turn, removes many of her objections and creates room for her love to grow once more. Indeed, when Megamind, obviously upset, mentions their breakup while they are driving to Metroman’s hideout, Roxanne briefly displays a sorrowful expression before apparently hardening her resolve and slamming on the breaks. (This was likely because she still thought the former villain guilty of murder.) Furthermore, during this unused clip cut from the final film, while taunting his captive, Titan refers to Megamind as Roxanne’s boyfriend, and she doesn’t correct him. Moments later, when he tells the woman to summon her hero, she doesn’t hesitate to issue a heartfelt plea to Megamind. When she sees the blue man make his grand entrance, the look on Roxanne’s face says clearly that she knew he would come. When she believes Megamind to be wounded, Roxanne weeps, and when he, at last, takes up the position of Defender, she kisses his cheek. It seems the woman has grown to trust and love the former Master of All Villainy.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

Megamind’s intelligence is likely not the only reason Roxanne finds herself falling for him. Many fan theories suggest that his personality was also a driving factor. As mentioned before, he is funny and likable during their dates. When they ride bikes together, he’s clearly having fun, and that makes him fun to be around. While dining out, just before the kiss and the holowatch’s malfunction, he obviously charms her. Even before that, however, the blue man seems to display some very positive traits. His mourning his nemesis, laughing with Minion, and playing with the brainbots all evince a kind heart hidden beneath the black leather and spikes. That same trait continues to appear throughout the film. Later in the narrative, during Titan's attack, Megamind displays a concern for the people of Metro City despite those same people having ostracized him all his life. He is manifestly not as evil as he tries to appear. In fact, his treatment of his damsel offers further proof of this. While he has Roxanne tied up in his Lair as bait for Metroman, it becomes obvious that Megamind’s so-called doom devices have been carefully calibrated not to actually harm the woman, and she seems to know it as she shows no fear. She even seems to enjoy her situation sometimes. When Megamind makes a veiled Star Wars reference, Roxanne smirks as if she’s trying not to laugh.

Thus it appears extremely likely that, from the start of the movie, the reporter already knew Megamind was too good a person to actually hurt her and it seems she appreciated his geeky humor. This is hardly surprising. According to the prequel comic, The Reign of Megamind, he has had more than 600 failed plots and Roxanne has been his compulsory guest of honor for many of them. Consider how much time for interaction that must have afforded them before the cameras started rolling. Even if Roxanne was only awake for an average of half an hour before each actual battle began, that would still mean that she spent roughly 300 hours alone in Megamind and Minion’s company. To put it in perspective, that’s twelve-and-a-half days! It seems nearly impossible that Roxanne could spend the equivalent of nearly two weeks in Megamind’s company without some of his charm, kindness, and humor showing through. This is quite possibly another reason for her evident attraction.

That’s not all. As mentioned in the post What Sort of Hero Will Megamind Be, the blue man lists several qualities necessary for a Defender while discussing the topic in the Metroman Museum. Although he doesn’t seem to recognize it at the time, he actually displays all of them with the exception of his former adversary's DNA. Strength? The fact that Megamind breaks a saw on Titan’s face while punching him indicates that the former villain is far more physically powerful than he looks, and his ability to remain calm and think under extreme pressure suggests that he has serious willpower. Determination? Megamind talks about learning from his many defeats, and the simple fact that he continued to get up and try again after losing more than 600 times shows that he certainly doesn’t give up easily. Courage? The alien genius goes to Roxanne for help in finding Titan’s weakness rather than fleeing despite Titan’s attempt to kill him. Afterward he puts his life on the line to save Roxanne from the new villain—and that’s after facing a superpowered foe for years. Whatever else he may be, no one can argue that Megamind isn’t brave.

Finally, there’s also Megamind’s industriousness. Imagine how many inventions he must have constructed over the years… There would doubtlessly be hundreds! Everyone one of them had to be not only built but also designed and tested. How many hours of plans, calculations, schematics, calibrations, and labor go into each one? It's unclear, but what is certain is that, despite clearly knowing how to have fun, the blue man just as obviously understands the value of hard work. It’s doubtful that laziness is a vice he has ever suffered from.

So, why is Roxanne Ritchi attracted to Megamind? While we may never know how physically desirable she finds him—although fans speculate that, based on their relationship, she must find him handsome—the blue man possesses plenty of other beguiling virtues. Alien or not, Roxanne obviously finds his intelligence and personality too alluring to ignore, and as soon as he embraced goodness rather than behaving in destructive ways she could not condone, she gave him her heart. If you consider it, that really isn’t shocking at all. If any one of us were courted by a person who was smart, funny, courageous, kind, charming, hardworking, fun-loving, and strong, would we remain unaffected? Or would we, like the movie’s heroine, tumble head-over-heels into love? In the end, it’s little wonder that Roxanne fell for the new Defender of Metro City. It would have been more surprising if she hadn’t.

Findings from watching the season two opening. Here be spoilers if you haven’t seen it, begone all who seek to avoid those.

Crowley climbs up the rock (and does not look like he enjoys climbing much). Does that mean demons can’t fly? Crowley in particular can’t fly?

There is a moth (butterfly) that starts flying with Crowley and Aziraphale when Crowley lights the match. It’s the first creature that accompanies them. Is it important?

The fuck is this thing. I thought it’s an elephant first? With a trunk? But it’s on fire. Could just be a rock? Whatever it is, the angel with the box (Gabriel?) spawns right behind it. I would say portal to Hell, but angels don’t commonly come out of those. Or do they now? Anyway mysterious fiery thing.

There’s also a bunch of animals in the background of this setting. They seem to be mostly sheep and goats. And there’s huge bones/skeletons. Dinosaurs are fictional in the Good Omens verse, though. (Something about the dinosaurs are a joke thing? Please let it be something about dinosaurs being a joke, I love this bit.)

It’s raining fire and the poor goats and sheep get torched. :( Looking pretty apocalyptic for a season that (maybe) isn’t about the end of the world this time!

There’s the pickled herring from the spoiler/bts pics! And this person looks like Hastur IMO. “Everyday” apparently already died; it’s on a tombstone. What is the person in the back (behind the herring barrel) carrying? A miniature airplane? A rocket launcher? A big camera?

And THEN there’s the lamp with a face and feet guy, walking in front of the person with the headscarf. WTF is with lamp with a face guy. Lamp with a face guy even has a smaller lamp attached to his arm. I do not want to meet lamp with a face on a dark graveyard!

There are some more spooky characters joining the procession as it goes underground. What’s up with red head and a lamp on a stick guy for example?

Lovelovelove Hell with the magma and the giant spider and the office chairs on rocks (some of them upside down). Giant pentagram in the background that seems to be spinning! I loved the basement office hell vibe they used for Hell in S1, but this fiery Hell looks so cool. Creature with bat wings perching on top of a rock! Great vibes, very hellish.

London during the airstrike has a cool blimb, a tank, lots of wreckage, is apparantly a 30 zone, so no speeding, and there’s an ad for Stairway to Heaven. Seems like a play or a movie maybe?

Aziraphale and Crowley with their wings out walk in front of a bus with “wings for victory” written on the side. And then an aircraft throws a bomb on them.

It is raining rabbits in the entryway to the magic show theatre, and there’s person sized and shaped rabbit in the audience. Is it Harry the Rabbit?

Lots of interesting head dresses in the people following after Crowley here, and there’s Beelzebub. They’re being led to meet Aziraphale in his magic uniform, now upgraded with a cape! (He should have worn the cape to Adam’s party, capes are cool.)

Space! Spacespacespace! Look at the planets and stars! Also the tank, it’s still here. And there’s... a rabbit astronaut? With glowing eyes?

Little UFO crossing in front of that moon/planet! Looks a bit like the flying saucer from season 1.

Thy kingdom airways lol! And it’s raining hearts! On Aziraphale and Crowley on the bookshop roof.

“Give me coffee or give me death” is a very metal slogan for a coffee shop. And there’s lots of music themed stuff in the street. There’s a jukebox, a pile of records behind it, that decoration between the street lamps looks like vinyl records cut in half strung up? And the Bentley is there, probably blasting Queen. :D

The skycrapers are elevator shafts. The one in the middle has an angel in it, riding down. Down to Hell? Ding!

It’s the Dirty Donkey! And the movie theatre is called “The Arrival”. It’s screening today! That’s very clever, wonder if the opening will change with the different episode titles? :) Also, there’s the image from the box the angel is carrying again, on the film posters for The Arrival. Can’t tell what it is.

Look at them all walking into the light! They’re going to be enlightened! Or something. But it is a very bright light! Lighthouse! It’s also covered in scrap and  junk nearly to the top. Whatever that may mean. (Guys don't walk into the light, no!)

Even more stupid silly rouges headcanons

- Joker loves home renovation shows! He has kidnapped several famous home renovation show people to decorate his lair, and yes they do air the episode

- every once in a while, the rogues do tournament of champions style games against each other. It's all sorts of games! Some of their more intense ones have been tag, hide and seek, and capture the flag. Capture the flag ended in an armed stand off.

- Their ultimate game of games is an end of the year heist! The villains all get together and submit a suggestion for the heist target, and random drawing picks the theme. It's been a few different coveted objects from Gotham like fancy jewels, encrypted data files off GCPD computers, an entire art gallery, or it's also been silly stuff like movie props or a shipment of rare beanie babies. One year the target was Bruce Wayne and the whole night it was villains just kidnapping Bruce like princess peach. Low key, Bruce had fun (since he was literally in no danger) and he got to skip a really boring party! This later becomes a separate game/event they do too, it’s called “kidnap bruce wayne day”

- during a party once, Riddler and Scarecrow got so drunk they got dumb tattoos. Scarecrow has so many regrets but Riddler still thinks his is kinda cool

- Joker and Killer croc are unironic besties. Everyone thought he was befriending for a goof or a scheme (and he sorta was at first), but croc is kind of his ride or die. Joker made the two of them friendship bracelets and will stab people who make fun of croc

- Ivy is secretly into Disney kid pop punk and it's her biggest shame. She used to be a hardcore Hannah Montana kid. Only Harley knows and she loves to binge Disney shows with her. Harley’s ringtone for Ivy is the best of both worlds song

- all of the villains have guest starred/hijacked on several game shows. Riddler often shows up on Jeopardy, Joker hosted an episode of match game with all the rogues as the celebrities, and for some reason Bane was on press your luck (he actually auditioned and was approved)

- Harvey needs to drink more water and is bad about keeping up the habit, so all the rogues all subconsciously try to make sure he drinks enough water daily. Harley gets him a water bottle that shows how much you should drink per day, Penguin won't let anyone serve him alcohol @ the iceberg lounge unless he drinks one whole glass of water first in front of them, and a giant box of expensive bottled water is sent to him from “the man of puzzles” at least once a month

- Penguin has a self care blog where he posts about his emotional journey and no, he does not accept critiques of his blog format.

- Bane likes to color a kids menu while he waits at restaurants, tbh he likes to color in general because it's fun. The rogues get him coloring books

- Scarecrow and Riddler are friends even though neither will admit it. It was cemented when, by accident, Riddler tagged along on an unplanned Jonathan's hometown he didn’t want to even go on. It was a mess but high key made them best friends. They have one of those moments where they're sitting on a bench together and it's incredibly uncomfortable and riddler is like "so, you wanna talk about all your messy childhood bullshit or do you wanna go get waffles?" And Scarecrow is silent for a while, face in his hands before he replies, "of course I fucking want waffles." And they get to have so many waffles.

- Joker loves to be carried around, he will often just make goons drag him around when he's bored or feels like it. Sometimes he'll just start falling backwards or running at someone to catch him, because they just will. If they miss, he'll be a drama queen about it

- When Ivy needs Harley's attention, she shakes a container of mini m&ms

- When they have meetings Joker has a favorite seat. He will not yield for any other seat, ever.

- Harley and Joker play those rhythm clapping games like concentration when they're bored/waiting on stuff. They have the friendship of two 8th grade girls tbh

- It’s on Twoface’s bucket list to meet keith morrison from dateline, the rogues get him to come to a surprise birthday party one year and he squeals like a teenage girl

- Scarecrow secretly has a faint southern accent from his early early youth but he hides it really well. If he's tired or drunk enough, it slips out. The rogues love to ask him to say "cowboy stuff", and sometimes he'll indulge them

- Clayface sometimes like to just spend a long time living in a persona for fun, not crime related at all. Sometimes he spends months as an eccentric burger king employee who is two months away from graduating with an online degree to phoenix online university. He’s making a documentary about his experiences

- Riddler got Scarecrow a day planner as a joke/to make fun of his poor planning skills, but jokes on Eddie because he actually uses it!

Anime and Manga Log [06/18/23]

This was a fairly busy week. There was a new series out of Weekly Shonen Jump, Black Clover movie, and the spring anime season is starting to finish up. Additionally a new JoJo chapter dropped. Plenty to talk about as always. Discussion and Spoilers for the following series below: Martial Master Asumi 1 [NEW] Do Retry 7 Cipher Academy 28 Tenmaku Cinema 10 365 Days to the Wedding 110 [END] Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King Dr. Stone New World (Season 3) 11 [Cour 1 END] Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Arc 11 [END]

Martial Master Asumi 1 [NEW] Kawada from Hinomaru Sumo returns with a series about mixed material arts. I didn’t read his previous series and I didn’t get into the anime either, but I thought it was cool that he survived for 5 years in Jump in the shadows of bigger hits. The first chapter was more dense than usual since they wanted to set up the MC and his family along with giving the audience some background to the sport in case they don’t know. Its a solid first chapter overall. My only nitpick is the bullies coming back over and over again was slightly annoying. Rather than the first chapter being a single string of events, it felt like a 2 act story with the school at the start then the Dojo in the back half. The art is great as expected for a Jump veteran. The opening color spread in particular is much more striking than you typically see. I’ll be looking forward to more.  Do Retry 7 From the mangaka behind Bone Collection comes a boxing series that takes place during World War 2. He has improved substantially since his previous serialization in drawing, character writing, and clearly picked up techniques while working for Yusei Matsui. The first arc is a boxing match against someone who is in a similar situation to our protagonist where they’re in the sport to protect someone precious to them. However, he’s fallen off the path and became more and more obsessed with strength to prove his worth. The intensity of the match was crazy with Aozora taking punch after punch. I love how it culminates in finally closing the distance and delivering the finishing punch in return. That caps off the first volume with a W for our main character. Its hard to say if this series can stick around, but for the time being I’m enjoying it. Cipher Academy 28 This week we began the 3rd match of this class vs. class code battle. The theme is determining your ally from your enemy, or are they perhaps the same person, maybe neither? This question is presented to us in 2 different ways. Firstly, in the form of Yukako’s backstory. This is a 6 star puzzle because there can be no definitive solution to whether her actions were good or bad. The answer will depend on who you ask. Its a similar reason given for the previous 6 star puzzle from earlier in the series. Secondly, we get the question in a more literal form. Toshusai is presented with two projections of Yukako and has to determine who is the real one based on pure instinct. Its a question about how well can you know and trust someone. If she guesses correct that means our class got a clean 3-0 victory. That seems unlikely since Iroha still needs a turn. We shall see next week. Tenmaku Cinema 10 Unfortunately Tenmaku Cinema doesn’t appear to be catching on with Japanese readers. Could it be the abundance of movie themed stories like Sakamoto Days and Oshi no Ko? maybe readers aren’t fond of the mc using someone’s else work (similar to Time Paradox Ghost Writer)? or perhaps it just isn’t interesting enough? Personally I’ve been enjoying it quite a lot.  This week’s chapter continues Shinichi’s tour and observation of Hinaki’s time on a professional movie set. Up to this point, I was thinking Hinaki resonated with the character in Tenmaku’s script. At least that’s how I made sense of why a top level actor would take on an amatuer project. But this chapter completely changed my perspective. Maybe there is some level of resonating with the character, but I think its a feeling of rivalry. She’s been isolated in the world of acting and suddenly a fellow student who is the same age comes along with a masterful script. Of course she is going to jump on that. I think Hinaki saw this is a personal challenge to bring the character to life in the best way possible. Its like she found someone who might be able to understand her. Lets hope the popularity can recover before its too late. 365 Days to the Wedding 110 [END] I’ve been a fan of Tamaki Wakai since The World God Only Knows days and I always believed it was a matter of time before they landed another hit. There was a bakery series that has some loose TWGOK references. Then came King of Idol about a crossdressing male idol trying to get in the industry. Both of those were cancelled after about a year of serialization. Wakaki then moved to the Seinin magazine Big Comic Spirts where he published 365 Days to the Wedding. The story is about a pair of introverts who dread the idea of potentially being transferred to another company branch in a foreign country, so they create a plan to pretend date. Over the course of the story, they come to realize how compatible they are. I had a good time reading the series. It was generally pretty funny and heartfelt from start to finish. Also refreshing to have a romance with a pair of working adults. I would say it ended maybe too soon, but I can’t complain about Wakai finally landing another hit finally after all this time. It will be getting an anime soon. I recommend it! [Final Score: 8/10] Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King After being delayed 3 months from its initial release date, the Black Clover movie was finally released on Netflix this past Friday. Shonen Jump movies often come in 2 different varieties. The most common is a 90 minute self contained story with heavy exposition to make it work in the short run times. They feel like a mini arc out of the manga. However, ever since Strong World a lot of Jump movies add to the existing canon. Black Clover belongs to the later category. The movie has very minimal exposition and quite honestly its all action from start to finish with only a small regroup period in the middle. The story is about the previous Wizard Kings coming back Edo Tensei style and wrecking havoc. They want to hard reset the world because each of them was wronged in some way during their time. Instead of providing extensive backstory for each one, the movie would rather show you the sheer speculate of their power. I thought that allowed the movie to progress at a brisk pace (just as the manga frequently does). A movie medium is a good choice to experience the power of the best in the Black Clover world. At the climax of the film each Wizard King comes to realize that the world is changing for the better, even if incrementally. It heavily reinforces the theme of Asta’s unwavering spirit and how he inspires those around him. This film is very much what a Black Clover movie should be like. I enjoyed it a lot and consider it above average for the Shonen Jump movie genre. Dr. Stone New World (Season 3) 11 [Cour 1 END] I don’t have much to say about this season, but just wanted to put down some quick thoughts. The animation is the same old stiff style, but at least the reaction faces are good. The manga story of this cour is very solid. Senku and the gang are finally on the move thanks to having a ship. First stop is the island where the the space shuttle originally landed. The goal is to confirm the existence of and recover the platinum left behind so they can make an unlimited amount of nitric acid. There is even the promise of learning something about how people turned to stone. Great arc and looking forward to the action packed second cour in October. [Final Score: 7/10] Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Arc 11 [END] I’ve always had mixed feelings on the Demon Slayer anime. First, I am probably in the minority for not being a fan of Ufotable. I find their heavy computer CG style to be off-putting and boring. Its always flashy for the sake of flashy with minimal personality. However given that, I can still appreciate the work they put into the animation. Secondly, I don’t like how Aniplex splits up a story into its individual arcs as season labels. Demon Slater is particularly formulaic and that’s all the more obvious in this format. I think it loses all momentum when there’s only 11 or so episodes every year. Now for this arc, I remember liking it in the manga. Cool setting, another pair of Hashira to learn about it, and the usual backstories along the way. The arc concludes with Nezuko being able to stand outside in the sun without harmful effects. The anime version was such a slog. They pad out scenes and everything is muddled with Ufotable’s CG flair. In isolation from the rest of the story it offers very little to push the story forward until the very end. Demon Slayer works best when you get in the groove of the series over a long period. Next is the brief next training arc before everyone raids Muzan’s infinity castle. Just give me 4 cour please Ufotable, I’ll even take it split. [Final Score: 6/10]

These are questions I feel like I can't give a satisfactory answer beyond "cuz it just is" the same way breathing is a thing that I must do in some fashion. But here's some things I've semi-sorted out over time:

My paternal family is full of storytellers, mostly of the liar and tall-tale-teller variety. I really can't trust most of what I'm told from that side about family history and their lives cuz it's always shifting and changing and full of improbabilities, holes one can drive a semi truck through. Especially my dad's stories; he has such a desperate need to seem cool and important, making up an entire military service life that doesn't match up at all to timelines and only started after watching 80s action hero war films, and even in some cases using them to justify outright bigotry. His dad used to do the similar things, about being a pilot and war hero. My aunt at least made the stories of childhood antics sound funny, and my late uncle found humor in his many medical mishaps, exaggerated in some cases, others not.

(This is also why I cannot stand some people that will bust in constantly with one-upmanship stories or a desperate need to relate and be involved by telling tangentially related tales, and always worry I'm doing, or appearing to do, the same thing as a family trait that I can't shake)

As my aunts and dad get older, and especially with one having multiple health conditions, misunderstandings due to "medicated or not?" and also probable dementia are added in, but that's at least normal, if heartbreaking.

(I also don't interact with my family much; they aren't entirely terrible people, but we don't really operate on the same wavelengths and I tend to like them better when I'm living at least a few hundred miles away. I've tested this a few times over the last 25 years or so)

My late uncle was much younger than his 3 siblings, still a teenager when we were kids, and he was into science fiction and fantasy. He was the one who told us those stories, based on the books he was reading, or the art and statues he collected in his room. I first learned of Hobbits and Rings, and the Three Laws of Robotics, from him. I watched my first episode of Star Trek with him--TNG's "Skin of Evil" actually, and though I knew nothing of the show, the characters' interactions and response to their fallen comrade struck small me in a way. My uncle was also the one who got us to draw and practice writing by making it fun and relating it to stories. Before starting school, we'd tell him stories he'd write down for us as we scribbled out drawings. Natural progression to start writing on my own once I could.

And I had a very clear and desperate urge to learn how to read and write as a tiny sprog. I wanted to know the stories for myself, and also write down my own. Cuz it struck me, somehow, that tall tales and lies were just tall tales and lies. But write it down, give it to made up characters, and then it's a story. And one of my earliest SFF memories that wasn't an animated "kids movie" but a grown up show, was a rather human story of loss and grief, even with phasers and a guy in an oilslick suit as trappings.

I knew I liked reading (and watching, and very eventually playing) stories, and how words worked together. How one could reference other stories and bounce off those ideas and themes. How to create emotions and make people laugh or cry with just some cleverly placed words, maybe a good visual and music cues. I wanted to do that, too. And along the way was lucky enough to find adults and then peers and friends willing to encourage and nurture that desire into an actual skill.

Wish I'd kept up on the drawing, though; I had a creative streak, but my interest ended up leaning more into words. I have a decent imagination, but I didn't want to use it to be just a liar. Storyteller though, seemed far preferable an appellation, and that's at least a respectable way to use made up things to tell certain truths.

Favorite gifts to give/receive? Classic, Red, Stretch, Dusty?

Classic- Give- puzzle things, or small things related to something the person is into. Like a particular show/ book? Oh, he was at a store and saw a shot glass with them on it. You might not even drink, but it has that character on it.

Recieve- anything with his interest; shows you were thinking about him. There's this really cool mini telescope that's painted like a galaxy? Yeah, it was like 1$ and it can barely see the visible stuff much better- but he loves it, and if it's from his SO, he'll take it to work and pull it out, telling everyone to get looking for stars.

Red- Give- he's more of an acts of services guy. You having trouble doing something/ making something work? Why throw it away? Suddenly that damn toaster oven that sets of the fire alarm every time you use it, no matter how clean or how low the setting is is able to not onnly cook things it normally can, but it has a timer to turn on and off; you can go to work and always come home to a fresh, hot meal without all the work!

Recieve- he likes little trinkets that show you were thinking about him. A keychain with something that means something to the two of you, a throw blanket with something cool on it, even better if it's a matching set, because then he can switch them and smell you, you smell him, and it's still the same look and feel.

Stretch- Give- interesting looking things, like water bobbers, those cute little bubble things that make interesting patterns. Think lava lamp... the science is so simple, yet so intertaining.

Chris Jericho is showing off a softer side to his acting skills as a loving family man in the new UPtv movie Country Hearts. The All Elite Wrestling star plays a rocker called Bones who gives up life on the road to spend more time at home and run a horse breeding business.

In the flick his daughters Tori (Lanie McAuley) and June (Katerina Maria) are torn between following their mom Darlene (Michelle Nolden) into the world of country music or helping dad with his new business venture. The movie debuts October 22, followed by a second film called Country Hearts Christmas which premieres on UPtv on November 19.

The role isn’t too far away from real life for wrestler Jericho, who is also the lead singer of the heavy metal band Fozzy. Here, he tells us what it was like stepping into a more wholesome role.

You’ve done movies and TV before, but Country Hearts feels like a departure for you. How did the role come about? 

Chris Jericho: The one thing about acting and Hollywood is it comes in waves. I never really had the breakout role, but I’ve always had good ones. I think in the past couple of years I’ve probably had the most parts ever. The first one was called Terrifier 2, which last Halloween made $12 million on a $250,000 budget. I was in that. Then after that, I got Dark Match which I filmed in Edmonton. Then after that, this opportunity came along to be the lead in Country Hearts. I was thinking, “What kind of murder mystery is this? Am I the killer? What kind of vengeance is being bestowed on the villagers of the country.”

It ended up being nothing like that, but a dramatic part. It almost had a Hallmark Channel sort of vibe. This was an offer, which was rare in Hollywood. When I looked at the part, I realized it’s very dramatic, deep, and emotional. I thought it was great and something I’d been wanting to do. Being in a horror movie, that is what you would expect Chris Jericho to be in. But to be in a Christian-themed music drama where I play a father of daughters and have a wife. This project is really cool and something nobody would expect me to do. I’m always attracted to those opportunities.

Tell me about Bones. There are some similarities with you on the road as a traveling rock star and wrestler. How much did you relate to him? 

This is a cool character. I like who he is and where he came from. This was a great way to stretch my acting chops to prove I could do this. Not just as bodyguard number one performer. I can relate to Bones a thousand percent. Not just the fact he was a touring musician. He reinvented himself, which is something I know about. Here he is as an owner of a horse-breeding farm. The character has a connection to me, but at the same time, I’ve never ridden a horse in my life. If I did, it was maybe once or twice. I think those are the parts that make you a great actor. Take the things you can relate to and internalize them, putting your mind on to something new and learning about them.

I remember when I was taking acting lessons in 2005 or 2006. If someone asks you if you can skydive or something, you say yes and then figure it out before the shoot. When you’re talking about a horse farm and breeding champion racehorses, you learn. When you deliver this dialogue, which is kind of like delivering the mid-chlorian dialogue in Star Wars, you better figure it out and learn these words and make it seem like you know what you’re talking about. The other good thing is Bones is learning too. Bones isn’t quite sure what the hell he is doing. So it was a great combination of subjects I knew and subjects I had no idea about that you learn.

With a follow-up Country Hearts Christmas coming out next month, you had the chance to really dig into the character. 

There is potential to do more, too. I’ve been doing showbiz for 30 years because wrestling is show business. You can tell when something is good. This is really good as you see it start to come together. We can do so much with this story. There are a lot of different layers. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think, but once we started filming, I thought I could play this character for a while. It’s a really cool movie. Sometimes things find you that you weren’t expecting. Hopefully, we can do more. We filmed both movies over the course of the month with two different directors and two different vibes. I felt like I was Michael J. Fox on the set of Back to the Future 2 where they did 3 at the same time. There was a lot here.

In AEW, you’re among the veterans helping develop a lot of new talent like Will Hobbs and Sammy Guevara. How rewarding is that for you? 

Wrestling is storyline-based. When it came to losing to Hobbs for example, storyline-wise it was what was best for the story. Chris Jericho is an actor playing a role on a show. It’s like if Bones is supposed to lose the horse semen sample, which is one of the things that happens. The script says it’s what they want you to do. Wrestling is the same way.  A lot of guys don’t see it this way, but I’ve always had. I have always treated it as show business. The characters and story are way more important than the match, even though the matches are important too. I enjoy this stage of my career, but I’ve enjoyed every stage of my career because I’m always about telling stories. Some stories you win, some stories you lose. Some stories are Empire Strikes Back where everyone loses, and you think it’s the end of the road until the heroes come back. I take everything in stride and treat things as a great storyline with ups and downs.

How was it to see Adam Copeland sign with AEW? 

Adam is one of the all-time greats. I was surprised when he showed up. I never thought we would see it, but I don’t think people thought they’d see me wrestling outside of WWE either. To have him in AEW is great. An old friend too. Wrestling is a lot like the army in a sense you have ones you were in the trenches with and you go home and don’t see them for years and meet up again. Then it’s like no time has passed. That is what it has been like with Adam. Plus, having a guy with so much experience. Such skill.

It’s easy now to say at 52, but age is just a number. I think both of us are in the best shape of our lives and know more on the experience level. We can still work at the highest of levels. Who is putting a number on anything? The Rolling Stones just put out one of their best songs in 30 years, and Mick Jagger is 80. It’s all about how you are perceived and how you can deliver. If you can do that, you can still entertain people.

AEW

You’ve gotten to know AEW owner Tony Khan well over the years. The company has faced its share of challenges in 2023. How do you think he has handled things, specifically on social media? One thing you can’t deny is he is a passionate guy. 

Tony is a passionate guy. Nobody is going to tell him what to do, and nobody should. He also comes from a generation of people who were involved in social media. He was on the message boards. Jon Moxley became a fan from videotapes. I became a fan from watching cable wrestling on the low-level UHF channels or wrestling magazines. To me magazines were life. Tony is always going to be involved in social media because that’s how he became a fan. That’s how it is. Whether you like it or not, that’s what it is. He has built a multi-million dollar pro wrestling company in a short period of time so there are going to be growing pains.

We all work together every week to put together the best show we can. We have long-term planning and a structure and things going on that are exciting. We worked through all the pros and cons, no pun intended. And things are going really well and will continue to do so. It’s pro wrestling. It’s never gonna be all great. There is always going to be the Wild West vibe because wrestling is that by design. It’s not hockey or football or a scripted movie like Country Hearts. You have to go with the flow. It’s unlike anything else. It’s hard to see from the outside looking in, but when you’re on the inside looking out, it’s business as usual. And business is going really well.

AEW

Who out of the AEW roster do you see breaking into movies or TV? 

You never know. You would never know Batista (Dave Bautista) would be the best actor out of everyone. Nothing against The Rock, John Cena, or other WWE guys. Who knows? You can throw in Darby Allin and MJF, who play great characters. Guys like that. I think Jon Moxley does great in a movie. Any top guy who captivates people at the highest level would be good actors. I’ve been acting for more than 30 years since October 2, 1990, when I started acting because that’s what I got into wrestling.

It’s all about playing a character and morphing and evolving in the role to keep people engaged. That’s any movie or TV show. I’m watching The Righteous Gemstones right now and Danny McBride is a great actor. All are great actors and characters. You may see Danny and not see him as a leading man because he doesn’t look like Brad Pitt, but he is excellent. It’s the same in wrestling. Acting being on this movie set is different from where wrestling is live and has that instant gratification. I haven’t even seen Country Hearts yet. I hope I was good. We’ll see.

Tomorrow Never Dies (dir. Roger Spottiswoode)

-Jere Pilapil- 8.5/10 Double-0 Status: Well I had this marked as a 3.5/5 on Letterboxd before but I’ve always liked it. Still do! Theme: “Tomorrow Never Dies” by Sheryl Crow. If I’m being honest, I’m always gonna be a little biased against this song because I know Pulp submitted their own “Tomorrow Never Dies” (later retitled “Tomorrow Never Lies” and released as a B-side) and got rejected. If any British rock singer deserves to have a Bond theme credited to his name, it’s Jarvis Cocker. No shade to Sheryl Crow, whom I adore, but her song is a bit faceless and generic, but fine. The end credits theme by k.d. Lang is incredible. The Crow song is a 5/10 though. Tomorrow Never Dies is the 1997 James Bond movie starring Pierce Brosnan, and my favorite of his four. There is a chance that it’s because it was the first one I had on VHS as a teen (I later found The Living Daylights in my parents’ collection), so I watched it over and over again. On this rewatch, though, I think it’s a well-crafted bit of 90s schlocky action movie goodness. Like Goldeneye before it, it acts as a bridge between the kinds of action movies we had during the Cold War and what they’d become afterwards. A lot of individual pieces sit uncomfortably next to each other, as a result, but at its core it’s Pierce Brosnan furrowing his brow, pursing his lips, and firing guns as nameless bad guys until inanimate objects blow up around everyone. This time around, the movie begins with Bond escaping a Russian-adjacent weapons bazaar while spying on a terrorist in possession of the MacGuffin: this time, a GPS encoder. You can tell GPS was new at the time, because the hot-headed American general helpfully spells out “global positioning system”. The terrorist is just a nerd, though, who works for the real villain: an even bigger nerd named Elliott Carver (Jonathan Pryce). Carver’s a media baron whose plan is, in a broad sense, one of the more plausible bad guy plans for a Bond movie, but its specifics are almost Nathan Fielder-esque in its specifics. The plan? Use an undetectable submarine and the GPS encoder to trick British naval boats into trespassing into Chinese waters before firing a nuke at Beijing, starting World War III and instigating a Chinese military coup through his partnership with a Chinese general, who would then reward Carver’s media company with exclusive broadcasting rights in China. You got that? Carver’s entire character is a nice half-assed attempt at social commentary, as he routinely instigates terrorism in order to be the first to report the details (the number of NDAs he must issue has to be insane, and he seems to type all the news stories himself?). His operation seems a little sloppy: he gets on MI6’s radar because he publishes an article about dead seamen before the bodies had been discovered. Maybe that’s based on what they say about serial killers leaving clues because they want to be caught, who knows. Thankfully, Pryce goes big, hamming up the role with everything he’s got. It’s a good contrast with Brosnan’s effortless cool that anchors the movie in a subtle but easily digestible dynamic as the two match wits by proxy.

The action here is the point, unlike some of the older, more investigation/tourist-y iterations, and we’ve got some real knockouts. There are some nifty and thrilling moments in the cold open, with Bond evading and escaping the weapons farmer’s market in a jet with an assailant in the backseat. We get a thrilling car chase with a car Bond drives via a phone (a fun idea that IRL would get a lot of people killed!). The centerpiece, though, is an elongated chase scene that finds Bond and Wai Lin handcuffed to each other and on a motorcycle, evading various menaces, blowing up a bunch of shit and speeding through the streets of Saigon. Every action scene is unique and has a tactile feel that, well, hey, listen, I know it’s cliche to complain about all the CGI action in modern movies, but it does make a difference on an emotional level. (Did Brosnan’s era have more vehicular action than the other Bonds? Maybe I’ll keep track of that from here on out.)

Compared to that escape in Saigon, though, the movie can’t really scale up, and the entire closing sequence, while dramatic and well-crafted, can’t help but feel like the filmmakers are just tying up loose ends like the main bad guy, the stolen nukes, and the main henchman (Götz Otto as Stamper, bringing real “We have Rutger Hauer at home” energy). The bright side is that for this stretch, Brosnan and Yeoh have good chemistry - I’d love to see them in something else together. Like the best Bond movies, this one hangs together thanks to the cast and their interactions between the big setpieces. This one sags here and there (Teri Hatcher as Carver’s wife is terrible), but overall checks all the boxes it needs to in order to be a series highlight.

To Infinity and Beyond: baby!Jack truthing Birthday Ficlet

Today already looked like the perfect day. Warm weather, the sun shining, the birds singing, all the usual qualifications for "perfection". And if Dean had anything to say about it, it is also going to be, the perfect day.

Because Dean had planned out everything. Tents and tables spread out in the backyard of their new house, enough hamburgers and hotdogs to feed an army, a giant sheet cake in the freezer, and it looked like a Party City catalogue threw up all over their house, both inside and out. Hell, he and Cas even got a bounce house.

Yup, today was going to be perfect, Dean thought as he surveyed the backyard. He was going to make sure of it, nothing was going to go wro-

"To infinity and beyond!"

And the next thing he knew, he had a recently turned four year old, barreling into his legs almost knocking him off the porch.

He looked down to see Jack already dressed in his outfit for the day. A shirt with Buzz Lightyear's costume printed on it, complete with little cardboard Buzz wings (Cas made them), purple shorts with a purple tutu, and of course, his favorite Buzz light-up sneakers.

"I'd say that was a bit of a crash landing there, Mr.Lightyear" Dean laughed, as he bent down to right Jack's scribbled cardboard wings. Jack just ignored his reference, instead letting out an excited shriek as he took in the backyard.

Every tablecloth, plate, napkin, cup, balloon, and cardboard decoration was covered in Toy Story characters.

Toy Story, was the end all be all in their house, because they were Jack's favorite movies. So everything, was 100% Toy Story, 100% of the time, hence the party theme. And his favorite character was Buzz Lightyear, hence the costume.

"Dee where's your costume?" Jack questioned, after he finally recovered from the shock of seeing the, probably, overdecorated backyard.

"Yeah Sheriff Woody, where's your costume? It's almost one thirty" Cas called as he stepped out the backdoor. Cas was already dressed in t-shirt with Jessie's outfit printed on the front, her matching red hat, jeans and of course, cowboy boots which Dea-wait shit they only had a half an hour left.

And he hadn't even double checked th-

"The backyard and inside of the house already look incredible. Go on and get ready before everyone starts arriving" Cas smiled sweetly, knowing how worried Dean was about today.

"I will, after I chec-"

"Dean, I promise, I'll double check all the decorations, and the food. Me and the little space ranger have got it covered, right baby?" Cas supplied, looking fondly over at Jack.

"Yeah me and Da got it! Get dressed Dee" Jack cheered, as hopped down the steps and raced "flew" across the grass cardboard wings flapping behind him.

"Go get changed, cowboy. Everything already looks perfect" Cas teased, pressing a quick peck to Dean's lips. And then he was bounding down the steps towards Jack, warning him not to go near the bounce house.

So Dean reluctantly walked inside, forcing himself to ignore all of the things he wanted to check on, and instead making a beeline for their bedroom. He quickly pulled on his costume, but unlike Jack and Cas it was the real deal, not just a graphic t-shirt, Dean had the actual shirt, the vest, whole nine yards. Jack had asked if Dean would wear a real Woody costume and, hey who was he to deny his kid on his birthday?

So with a sigh, Dean made his way back to the living room so he could reorganize the snack table.

He wanted everything to be perfect today. Perfect for Jack because, this was his first real birthday party after all. And because Dean's oldest memory was of his fourth birthday, his last birthday party actually since it wasn't like they were throwing big family bashes on the road. No, birthdays were a box of cigarettes from his Dad (if he even remembered), or Dean sometimes scraping together enough money to get a cake for Sam's birthday.

Which is why today had to go smoothly. Because Jack deserved the world, he deserved to have a good life filled with memories of big family parties with fun decorations and food and laughter. And Dean could give it to him now, give him what he and Sam never had. So today had to be special, it had-needed to be perfect.

"Dean, I don't think Jack is going to care if the clouds are a little crooked" Cas pointed out, amusement dancing in his voice as he walked into the living room.

Dean huffed a laugh, but didn't stop his mission to straighten out the paper "Andy's Room" clouds taped to the wall above the table. Cas just sighed as he gently pulled his hand away from the wall, turning Dean towards him.

"Dean I know how much you want to make this day absolutely perfect for Jack, believe me I do too. But he's going to love every single second of it. He's practically bouncing off the walls already, and the party hasn't even started yet" Cas assured as he squeezed Dean's hands.

"I know, I know. But he deserves to have the best damn birthday. Especially after everything and he's just- Jack shoul-" Dean started, only to be cut off by the sound of the doorbell.

"It's Uncle Sammy and Aunt Eileen! Can I open the door, please?" Jack called from down the hall, asking for permission.

"Yeah buddy, you're allowed to open the door. Let them in" Dean shouted back, unable to help the smile pulling at his lips when he heard Jack enthusiastically telling them about "all the cool decorations".

"See? Jack is already loving it! Now relax, and enjoy the party, cowboy. Everything is going to be perfect" Cas smiled as he made his way down the hall to greet Sam and Eileen. But not before giving Dean's ass a little smack.

A few hours into the party everything was smooth sailing, and Dean had only been scolded for readjusting some decorations four times. The kids Jack invited from his class were having a great time, as where their parents, which was especially great because not a single one of them managed to see a member of Dean and Cas’ family discreetly place their weapons in the spare bedroom (Dean wasn’t a fool, it was a party full of hunters, he wasn’t just gonna make a no weapons rule because what if something happened?). So then Dean and Eileen manned the grill like champs, Cas and Garth kept an eye on the kiddos in the bounce house, Sam had handled the Buzz Lightyear shaped piñata perfectly, while Dean organized the kids, making sure Jack was the one to break it. The sun stayed shining, the birds kept singing. Everything was perfect.

Until it wasn't.

And it was all Dean’s fault.

Dean's stomach dropped as he stared down at the now smudged faces of Woody, Buzz and half of the green aliens. Because Dean just smooshed the entire left side of the cake while trying to take lid off.

He just destroyed the most important part of the party, the part Jack was most excited about. Now Dean just ruined everythi-

"-come in star command, do you read me?" Cas joked, completely startling Dean, because how long had Cas been standing there?

"Dean, what's wro-oh" Cas sighed as soon as he caught sight of the cake. 

"I friggin smooshed the whole thing with the lid. It's destroyed we can't-the party and Jack and-" Dean rambled, heart pounding against his chest, while Cas took the life from his hands and gently set it on the other side of the counter.

"Dean, stop it's okay breathe for me. It's just the cake. It's not your fault. It's still edible, we can fix this" Cas soothed as softly cupped Dean's cheeks in an attempt to ground him.

"Hey are you guys alri-oh shit" Eileen gasped as she and Sam walked through the kitchen door, which caused Dean’s heart rate to pick up again.

"It's okay, it'll be fine. We can try to scrape some of it back together with a knife" Sam offered, quickly moving Dean and Cas to the side so he could get at the cake.

But it only made the faces look completely unrecognizable.

"Damnit, what are we gonna-"

"Dee! Can we have cake now?" Jack asked as he came racing into the kitchen, and Dean, Cas, Sam and Eileen quickly huddled in front of the counter to hide the cake from sight.

"In a few minutes squish, we're still uh-getting it ready" Dean managed plastering a wide, hopefully convincing smile on his face.

"Why don't you go jump around the bounce house again, buddy?" Sam suggested, which had Jack nearly bolting out of the kitchen again with a nod

"Make sure one of your aunts or uncles, or your friends' parents are watching you!" Cas called after him, which only got a tiny "okay Da" in response.

They all let out a breath when they heard the backdoor slam, and quickly turned to look at the offending cake again.

"It's not that late, what if one of us runs to store and see if they have ano-"

"They won't, we ordered this specia-"

"And there seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere" Claire joked as she entered the kitchen and quickly surveyed the mess before her, eyes widening when she spotted the cake. And Dean normally would have teased her the reference but he was too busy, freaking the fuck out, so he chose to ignore it.

"What do we do? We can't fix this, there's no time it's completely rui-"

"Wait, dude calm down. I have an idea, hold on a minute" Claire proclaimed, and swiftly exited the kitchen, which did pretty much nothing to calm Dean's panic. In fact he was getting desperate.

"Do you think Rowena might have a spell-"

"That's not how magic works. But honestly Dean, I'm sure Jack won't even notice-"

"The kid can recite the entirety of Toy Story 2 from memory and you don't think he's gonna notice Woody is missing his entire head?"

"Alright, start grabbing the Toy Story figures and wash them off. Then we can put them all over the cake instead, and cover up the horrifyingly smeared faces" Claire ordered as she came back into the kitchen with Kaia in tow, and box of Jack's toys in hand.

And Dean could have cried from relief (he did).

"Holy shit Claire you're a genius" Dean praised, as he quickly began sifting through the box.

"I know, I know. Now c'mon, I want cake"

And a few minutes later everyone was gathered around the dining room table, singing a completely off key rendition of Happy Birthday. Jack was seated in the center of it all, with a half smooshed, slightly lopsided, plastic figure covered cake, with Dean and Cas crouching on either side of him. Jack hadn't even commented on the completely smeared face of Woody or Ham, he was just clapping along, bouncing in his seat. In fact, he the biggest smile Dean had ever seen on his face, and he teared up at the sight.

"Blow out the candles and make a wish, baby" Cas encouraged, and Jack attempted to do just that. Only succeeding when Dean secretly helped blow out the candles for him.

"Yay! To infinity and beyond!" Jack shouted again, as he stood up and jumped on his chair. The room easily erupted into laughter, while Charlie and Jody each snapped pictures from across the table.

"Alright Lightyear, let's not fall with style into the already smooshed cake" Dean joked, as he quickly stabilized Jack, which only caused everyone to burst into more laughter.

So, Dean scooped up Jack, sitting in his chair and placing him on his lap, while Sam offered to cut up the cake. And Cas took plopped down in the chair next to them, sliding him and Jack a plate.

"Are you having fun at your birthday party, baby?" Cas questioned as he handed Jack a plastic fork.

"Yeah! Claire jumped in the house with me! And Danny and Sarah and me played in the sandbox! An-and we played tag, and Aunt Donna played too! And the cake has all my friends on it, see!" Jack rushed out all in one breath, stopping to point at the now sliced cake. By "friends" he of course meant his actual Toy Story figures of course. But before Dean could even react to any of that, Cas was whispering in Jack's ear, and pulling away.

"Thank you for all the party things, Dee!" Jack beamed as he turned and threw his arms around Dean's neck.

And Dean's heart clenched as he tightly wrapped his arms around his kid, feeling a tear roll down his cheek. He looked back up to see Cas smiling widely at them, so Dean whispered something in Jack's ear too. And then Jack was off flinging himself around Cas' neck.

"Why doesn't all the family get together, I can take the photos" Marissa, the mom of one of Jack's friends offered.

And soon the three of them were surrounded by their family on all sides. Everyone laughing when Marissa suggested they all say "yeehaw" instead of cheese. Jack giggling when Claire zoomed over, and bent down so she could smoosh their faces together for the obligatory "silly face" picture. Dean quickly swiping icing on both Cas and Jack's noses, causing Cas to tip Dean's cowboy hat and Jack to shove a handful of frosting on Dean's cheek.

So maybe it wasn't the flawless, smooth sailing birthday party Dean had planned. But the weather stayed warm, the sun still shone, the birds still sang. His family laughed, and ate and had a blast.

And Jack looked about as happy as they had ever seen him, as he ran around the yard with his friends and played games with his family. Dean would even go as far to count it as a complete success. Especially since Jack asked Cas, "when can we have a big party again?", as they tucked him into bed later that night.

So as far as Dean is concerned, it was the perfect day.
