in case anyone is wondering, james somerton just uploaded a 30 minute """apology""" vid. not worth watching in my opinion so let me summarize for you:

he opens by telling everyone that he has been in the hospital after a suicide attempt and that the only reason he is still alive is because his dad knew to call 911

spends the rest of the vid pitifully apologizing for "not crediting" other people, like we don't all know that there's a very clear difference between accidentally missing citations and Intentional Plagiarism

throws nick under the bus for the gross things he's said about women and ace people, then makes sure to clarify that he's not trying to throw nick under the bus. ok

then goes on a little tirade about how he lost his best friend (nick) over this :(( and they'd been besties since like 2011 :(( so sad

states multiple times that he's not just upset that he got caught but upset because he didn't realize how many people he was hurting/that he was hurting people at all, which sure is a funny way to ignore all of the people who had confronted him about his plagiarism before only to be met with a harassment campaign led by him

insists that telos wasn't a grift and that he was always planning to deliver

justifies re-opening his patreon because he doesn't want people to get a surprise charge in january...you can also avoid that by deleting your patreon but ok

claims that any estimations of how much money he was making are inaccurate because he lives in toronto where it's very expensive

claims that the Literal Plagiarism "poor citation practices" were the result of the volume of content they were producing because he was forced to make a ton of videos that he didn't actually want to make because his audience wanted him to

no mention of his intentional manipulation of his audience into believing that he is the only queer creator, no mention of how he encouraged his audience to harass people, did not mention any of the stolen creators by name except for vetto russo

thanked hbomb for donating to the people he stole from which is fucking bonkers but ok

that's about it! i just want to be clear: health is not a joke. if james really did attempt, that's bad, and i do hope he makes a full recovery. however, i think it's real fucked up to start your "apology" video with such a blatant grab for pity. i hope he is safe and healthy and far, far away from the internet.

In Plagiarism and You(Tube), Hbomb says "If you consider something so obscure you can get away with stealing it, you do not respect it." Save that line for the next time someone tries to tell you that Roy Lichtenstein brought respect to comics as art.

It's since been pointed out that while Lichtenstein did copy one of Russ Heath's drawings of an airplane getting hit, the painting depicted above was actually copied off Irv Norvick, because Lichtenstein did this so many times to so many comic artists.

In Lichtenstein's defense, he was doing this in a time when comic artists frequently weren't even credited in the issues themselves. In his condemnation, he never even tried to check, nor has he made any move to pay or credit any of the comic artists who recognized their own work later on. Rather than elevating the "low art" of comics, he was widening the gap of financial success and respect even further.

The Hbomberguy of this story is art historian David Barsalou, who has now spent decades tracking down the original art and the names of the original artists used in Lichtenstein's most famous output. Here's the flickr gallery for the Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein project. Frequently copied were Tony Abruzzo, Ted Galindo, Mike Sekowsky, Joe Kubert, Jerry Grandenetti, and dozens more Golden Age artists who aren't very well known in comics circles, let alone art history books. Many of them died in poverty. That's something that the Hero Initiative, mentioned in Russ Heath's comic above, aims to prevent.

Also, Lichtenstein didn't even paint Ben-Day dots. That's a specific thing.

For the love of god, use your performance voice. It's incredibly hard to audio process your fucking mumblecore skit when half the character work seems to be what you are doing while your other character is talking and it makes noise. But let's liven up this conversation by inserting LOUD and AGRESSIVE sound effects, yay! What is the goal here. What.

This is honestly the auditory equivalent of a weirdly squish-fluffy microfibre pullover with an extremely scratchy, hard edged label, and you're too hot anywayws, but you can't take it off because there is someone else in the room and they randomly keep opening the window.

not to be a downer but while i agree with the sentiment of what the "death note AU where hbomberguy solves the kira case while investigating light yagami for something unrelated to the murders" post is trying to go for, it gets a bunch of stuff fundamentally wrong about light as a character and of how the death note itself works, and as a noted Light Yagami Hater™ i feel like i should set things straight here:

light was top of his class in high school and got into one of the most prestigious universities in his region. he does his research pretty thoroughly and would not even consider plagiarizing anything, especially with how unreliable it would make you look if you got caught. this "light would probably be a plagiarist if he was a youtuber" bit seems like it's there just because the james sommerton video is so fresh in our minds; if that post was drafted like a year ago there'd probably be a bit in there instead about light straight up lying about his accomplishments and how his mother is very proud

"light would have unhinged right-wing political takes if he was on youtube" there's a pretty significant possibility that he would, although not intentionally. light would brand himself as more of a center-left intellectual debater type and gets popular going up against people who are so right-wing that his points seem progressive by comparison (on top of him being conventionally attractive), and that would make stuff like his misogyny and pro-cop stances and "there are some types of people the world would be better off without" sentiments stand out when comparing him to more leftist youtubers. hbomb's initial investigation into light likely started out with the thesis of "light yagami can get away with saying shit like this because he's an extremely fuckable twink"

the thing about that post that stood out to me as its most egregious mistake though was the insistence of legal names being the ones you need to kill someone with the note. you've probably seen joke posts going around before like "if you write a trans person's deadname into the death note it kills you instead," and that's built upon one of the rules of the death note:

[id: The names you see with the eye power of a god of death are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see the names even if that person isn't registered in the family registration.]

a name doesn't have to be legally registered for it to work, and a legal name might not even work in some cases. granted a change of a legal name could still be a viable defensive strategy to throw off someone trying to research what your name is, but outright saying "i've legally changed my name to something you won't be able to find out so you can't kill me" will not protect you from the death note at all.

in my opinion, i believe the point in which hbomb spots the thread leading to his conclusion of light yagami being behind the kira murders is around the end of the yotsuba arc. he'd be able to intuit the first, second, and third kiras being separate entities by the types of people they kill, and the situation of "this guy i've been looking into has dropped off the face of the internet for like two months and the kira murders are suddenly different" would probably be too interesting of coincidence for him to ignore

I've seen a lot of takes about the Hbomb video - here's a link; he's also done some similar works criticizing Allen Wakefield (accidentally instigated the prime anti-vax movement while trying to scam people) and Tommy Tallerico (similar vein to The Video, of plagiarism/credit theft).

I've also enjoyed some of his teardown videos, but my real favorites are his Why FNV Is Genius (and Here's Why) and Pathologic Is Genius (And Here's Why), which lead me to buying and playing (some of) Pathologic 2.

One thing worthy of note is that he specifically requests that nobody start a witch hunt over the subjects of his videos. He is an opinionated person and his righteous indignation is very entertaining, but I've never seen him seriously suggest people harass any real human beings. Suggestions to do so after watching the video have been made by the viewers and are explicitly condemned by Hbomb himself in the video. Just saying.

But more to the point is how he ends the video: he decides to cap it off with a reel of suggested viewing for people who create the kinds of things Somerton allegedly made himself, focusing on queer creators.

I don't doubt other people have shared this already, but it hasn't crossed my dash, so I thought I'd give it a mention. It's a really nice way to end a video that, while focusing on informing the viewers and warning people of potential scammers essentially, does have a negative tone at times because he is, well, tearing into someone's monumental career of plagiarism.

I don't spend a lot of time on Youtube outside of very specific needs, but this still makes for a good opportunity for me to familiarize myself with work from others in the community.

Anyways, I just think that's an extremely cool way to end a four-hour-video that, while extremely entertaining, is a bit of a down to watch and realize how easily extremely unmotivated people are stealing others' work and making bank off of it. That's all I had to say, goodnight.

all of their bad writing and spreading of misinfo aside, i do genuinely feel for nick in this situation. the way that james has discussed nick - alternately fawning over them and using them as a shield, passively blaming them for "all the bad stuff in the videos" while trying about how they don't speak to him anymore - pinged to me as exceptionally manipulative and shitty from the very first "apology" video.

somerton's manipulation of his audience and mistreatment of other creators is pretty gross and obviously morally shit, but the way he's spoken about nick post-hbomb-and-todd-videos has struck me as exceptionally vile. naming nick in his suicide note as someone who's alternately to blame for his suicide (because he lost "his only friend") and also someone he's ~looking after even in death~ (scheduling videos/keeping videos up "for nick's resume", even when all things indicate that nick wants nothing to do with the videos or james anymore, let alone as points on a resume) is, in all honesty, abusive. it casts james as both victim and martyr in his (ex-)friendship with nick and implies that if nick had just stood by their friendship in this trying time, maybe he wouldn't feel the need to die, and don't you wish you'd managed to work it out, nick? aren't you sad that you weren't more forgiving and supportive before he died, or so he wouldn't have to?

i hope that nick has a strong support system and sets strong boundaries with james going forward. i hope they have access to a therapist, or at the very least close friends or family that they can lean on here. as someone who's had a partner who frequently threatened to commit suicide and attempted while i was present, i know how deeply traumatizing this kind of thing can be and how long it takes to get out of your system.
