Happy Halloween, Sarah Winchester edition, replete with a film-still of Helen Mirren's portrayal as reference, from the historical fantasy film Winchester.
Images brought to you by my general wardrobe and ongoing fascination with Sarah Winchester, whose chapter (and real history, rather than all the myths) can be found in A Haunted History of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts... I adored writing about Sarah and I hope you'll enjoy learning about her too...

Charter Street Cemetery October 21, 2023 Salem, Massachusetts
This is the cemetery where some the bodies of the victims of the witch trials were dumped and never given a proper burial because it was considered unclean or bad luck to touch the body of a witch. The grave of John Hathorne, the most hated judge during the trials, is also here. This is one of the oldest cemeteries in the US, which opened in 1637.

St. Louis Cemetery No 1 Official Tour, 501 Basin St, New Orleans (Treme District), LA 70112
Tumblr media
If you want to see the oldest cemetery in New Orleans, St. Louis Cemetery No 1, you’ll have to book a cemetery tour. At first this seemed strange to me but after taking the tour, I learned a lot about why only tour groups are allowed to visit. In the past, people vandalized the cemetery, stealing the metal and statues to sell them. This was rampant, so restricting the visits to small tour groups helps preserve the cemeteries.
I don’t know my way around the cemetery, so having a tour guide also helps. She stopped at several graves and explained their significance, as well as the history of the cemetery (established in 1789 by Royal Spanish land grant), the burial process, the need for above ground burials, some burial traditions, voodoo beliefs, history of New Orleans/malaria epidemics, etc. Some of the graves that we stopped at include Marie Laveau - the Voodoo Queen, Nicholas Cage (he's not dead yet but he has a grave), a voodoo priest, etc.
I didn't see grass or trees.
The tour is limited to a group size of 20 and departs often. You can book online. Meet at the Basin St. Station desk which also sells souvenirs. The tour is 45 minutes long and $25 for adults, $18 for children.
4 out of 5 stars

Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago, IL. (Aug. 2023)
post 1/?
Founded in 1877, this cemetery is home to mostly Czech graves, although all are welcome. It's almost not worth noting here because it's totally to be expected of a Czech cemetery, but the first thing that struck me about the place was the amount of graves with Czech inscriptions. Growing up in St. Louis, MO, we don't have a large northern slavic population, so I've never seen a place so saturated with that culture. I don't really know what their language looks like so walking right into it for the first time like this was a lovely experience.

Stone Cleaning Update
Tumblr media
On June 12, 2023 we hosted a stone monument workshop which I blogged about before the event. I thought I would share some before and after images with you.
Tumblr media
The lichen and moss have been removed and the dark areas of growth have been treated and will continue to fade over the next few months.  It will not look “perfect” – that is not the point of conservation. But, the cleaning will help preserve the stone longer.  Time will take its toll no matter what, but for now, we have done what we can to give it a longer life in which you can see the wording on the stone and hopefully prevented any damage to the surface of the stone.
