hey, i find your posts about historical fiction pretty interesting, do you have any recs?
anon this is the most beautiful and validating ask i have ever received. absolutely of COURSE I have recs. not gonna be a lot of deep cuts on this list but i love all of these books and occasionally books do receive awards and acclaim because they are good. in no particular order:
the cromwell trilogy by hilary mantel. of course i gotta start with the og. it’s 40 million pages on the tudor court and the english reformation and it will fundamentally change you as a person and a reader
(sub rec: the giant, o’brien by hilary mantel. in many ways a much shorter thematic companion to the cromwell trilogy imo. about stories and death and embodiment and the historical record and 18th century ireland. if you loved the trilogy, read this to experience hils playing with her own theories about historical fiction. if you are intimidated by the trilogy, read this first to get a taste of her prose style and her approach to the genre. either way please read all four novels ok thanks)
lincoln in the bardo by george saunders. the book that got me back into historical fiction as an adult. american history as narrated by a bunch of weird ghosts and abraham lincoln. chaotic and lovely and morbid.
the everlasting by katy simpson smith. rome through the ages as seen by a medici princess, a gay death-obsessed monk, and an early christian martyr. really historically grounded writing about religion and power, and also narrated with interjections from god’s ex boyfriend satan. smith is a trained historian and her prose slaps
(sub rec: free men by katy simpson smith. only a sub rec bc i read it a long time ago and my memory of it is imperfect but i loved it in 2017ish. about three men in the woods in the post revolutionary american south and by virtue of being about masculinity is actually about women. smith did her phd in antebellum southern femininity and motherhood iirc so this book is LOCKED IN to those perspectives)
a mercy by toni morrison. explores the dissolution of a household in 17th century new york. very different place and time than a lot of morrison’s bigger novels but just as mean and beautiful
(sub rec: beloved by toni morrison. a sub rec bc im pretty sure everyone has already read beloved but perhaps consider reading it again? histfic ghost story abt how the past is always here and will never go away and loves you and hates you and is trying to kill you)
an artist of the floating world by kazuo ishiguro. my bestie sir kazuo likes to explore the past through characters who, for one reason or another (amnesia, dementia, being a little baby robot who was just born yesterday, etc), are unable to fully comprehend their surroundings. this one is about post-wwii japan as understood by an elderly supporter of the imperial regime
(sub rec: remains of the day by kazuo ishiguro. same conceit as above except this time the elderly collaborator is incapable of reckoning with the slow collapse of the system that sheltered him due to britishness.)
the pull of the stars by emma donoghue. donoghue is a strong researcher and all of her novels are super grounded in their place and time without getting so caught up in it they turn into textbooks. i picked this one bc it is a wwi lesbian love story about childbirth that made me cry so hard i almost threw up on a plane but i recommend all her histfic published after 2010. before that she was still finding her stride.
days without end by sebastian barry. this one is hard to read and to rec bc it is about the us army’s policy of genocide against native americans in the 19th century west as told by an irish cavalry soldier. it is grim and violent and miserable and also so beautiful it makes me cry about every three pages. first time i read it i was genuinely inconsolable for two days afterwards.
this post is long as hell so HONORABLE MENTIONS: the amazing adventures of kavalier & clay by michael chabon, the western wind by samantha harvey, golden hill by frances spufford, barkskins by annie proulx, postcards by annie proulx, most things annie proulx has written but i feel like i talk about her too much, the view from castle rock by alice munro, the name of the rose by umberto eco, tracks by louise erdrich

I have been in a terrible reading slump and am looking for books to pull me out. Do you have any recommendations?
FRANCES HARDINGE. cool heroines, middle grade level that adults will love, cool fantasy premises, perfect balance of quality & light read. my faves are deeplight + cuckoo song.
If you don't like fantasy then my beloved herotic stories for punjabi widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal. everyone should read it I'm not kidding I love it to bits.
more ideas:
beach reads!! these are all fun engaging types of books:
fantasy: a deadly education by naomi novik
thriller: the it girl by ruth ware
thriller but comedy: Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano
horror: My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. the coldest girl in cooldown by Holly Black
litfic: Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
romance (F/F): Hotshot byClare Lydon
romance (het): Last Tang Standing by Lauren Ho (contemporary). Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore (historical). Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood (YA)
prose so good you want to eat it. (words are pretty but the book is a bit heavier to stomach! depends on your tastes)
matrix by lauren groff. into the woods by tana french. my dark vanessa by kate elizabeth russell. The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker.
engaging nonfiction
humble pi by matt parker. the code book by simon sigh. if you wanna go heavier, I really loved Black AF History by Michael Harriot
shorter stuff
short stories! I've loved everything I've read that was short by Tamsyn Muir, but the collection Heiresses of Rust (2016) she's featured in also has an incredible mix of short stories by various authors. the theme is lesbian fiction. another sff author I love for short stories is James Tiptree
tiny books! chaptered but on the shorter side. Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand. Houston, Houston, Do You Read? by James Tiptree Jr. One Day All This Will Be Yours by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir. The Murders of Molly Southbourne by Tade Thompson

RE: this ask
Sorry about to go off on one, gender studies and online fan culture from an academic standpoint is a special interest of mine because being film and literature student wasn't annoying enough (participatory culture studies my beloved)
From a general standpoint, I think the reason M/M ships in fiction have always been more popular is because male characters are historically more developed and complex. I think it’s only in recent years have their been an influx of popular F/F ships, with the added development of women on screen (e.g Clarke and Lexa, Kara and Lena, Regina and Emma, Nancy and Robin) - I think there is also a point to be made this has coincided with gender expression, genderqueerness and more general knowledge of being outside the typical gender spectrum.
I can’t explicitly say that being in M/M fandom spaces encouraged my personal discovery of being transmasc but it certainly helped to have an avenue where I could project onto these “male” characters and see myself in them. I was so uncomfortable in my own body and what I didn’t know at the time as dysphoria, I can see why I didn’t go for F/F ships.
There are of course a lot of “fandom elders” but young (early to late teens) afab people do make up a large bulk of it and I get why  it may be easier for them to fixate on M/M ships as a, sort of method of exploring their own sexuality and gender expression. F/F ships may hit too close to home and F/M ships are what they are trying to escape from so it leaves M/M ships to project onto. Which, unfortunately then can become warped by the persons own comphet and/or binary ideas about gender.
A male character may have more stereotypically “feminine” traits (in terms of interests or emotional reactions) and I can see why people who also have those traits would project there own insecurities onto them, reinforcing the feminisation of the male character but not being comfortable enough in your own gender expression to genderbend the character or write them as trans.
It’s the same reason I think mafia romance, dark romance etc etc is so popular with cishet women because they can read about a fantasy where instead of the very real every day misogyny and violence they face leading to abuse, assault and death, it brings “positives” ; protected, loved, a happy relationship.
Which, side note. I think this has A Lot to do with y/n, self insert fics becoming “cringe”. Because, I think a lot of people just want to fuck/date a character and feel like they can’t write a self insert anymore, so just project massively onto one character, leading to a lot of these issues. I don’t think Tony Stark/Peter Parker would be as popular as it is if people just let young women write their self insert fic about being Tony Stark’s sugar baby and then we wouldn’t have the wildly mischaracterised version of Peter Parker that we do!
But, all this being said. I’m talking about fiction. Dean Winchester isn’t actually affected if people online only talk about him in a stereotypically “female” way.
RPF is a different kettle of fish (and I’m not going in RPF ethics that’s different - I have no issues with rpf creators/consumers to be clear, I am one) because a real person does become affected. Even if you are keeping your fan works and discussions to private spaces, it can leach over into how you speak about the actual person. That’s where it becomes so incredibly important to remember that your RPF version of celebrities are just as fictional as Dean Winchester is.
sorry I used mr. supernatural as an example, 13 year old me is still alive and kicking in my head somewhere.
I love to hear your perspective on it with a trans worldview (and academic credentials), and I do agree that that might be a big driver of some young people only wanting to engage with MLM fic and feeling uncomfortable with WLW fic. You've brought up so many great points so I'll try and address them all.
I can add the perspective of a lesbian who was closeted for the first two decades of my life, came out less than five years ago, and still struggles on and off with comphet now. MLM fics in my teens were a way to consume queer content and relationships without having to think about the implications of enjoying consuming WLW content, and I think that's true for a lot of young closeted teens so it's no surprise that some comphet/hetnorm/cisnorm stuff bleeds through there because it's a framework the authors haven't managed to detach themselves from yet.
But yeah, I agree the issue lies with people wanting characters to be self-inserts partially so that they can experience sex, sexuality, and romance without any of the hang ups of thinking about patriarchy. And I agree with your solution: make y/n fics cool again! The ability we have to hallucinate while we read is magic! You can put YOURSELF in as a character's love interest, how cool is that?
Ultimately, yeah. There's nothing wrong with RPF as long as it isn't actually affecting the person that the RPF is based off, but I've seen a lot of takes escaping containment so to say (ie. leaving this website) with takes about the actual racers so obviously picked up through RPF. The main culprits are Charles, Lando, Max in my experience.

Do you perhaps have stephcass recs?
*shows up literally over two months later like a person who takes a normal amount of time to answer asks* yes hello I do have stephcass recs
unfortunately I have been known to answer these things too quickly and then read better fics that would have fit the prompt and then I can't get anon to send me the fic request again (smallville!clois anon I'm begging you to give me another chance) so when I saw my meager collection I decided to wait until I had something to pick from
and we all know what shipping a sapphic ship is like. hell, I'm not even exempt from this. so many phenomenal sapphic ships just get relegated to secondary or even tertiary pairing and never get their own quality stories. and I'm a picky reader as is, so...
anyway I've gathered a few of the best fics I've encountered that actually focus on our beloved batgirls I hope you enjoy!!
Meet Me Where You're Going is such an easy read considering it's the longest fic on this list. it deals with the batgirl mantle and the circumstances surrounding Cass giving it to Steph and also deals with you know just the drama of falling in love with the person who's most important in the whole world to you. it's plotty but not a casefic per se, mostly just using the plot as an excuse to move the emotions along
The Haunting of Wayne Manor is a historical au in that it certainly takes place before cellphones and depends on governesses being normal but I have no idea when it takes place otherwise. it's tagged as gothic horror but I feel like it's mostly atmospheric. idk how to describe this it's really good and the writing is really intricate I had a lot of fun and was on the edge of my seat the whole time
seven different kinds of light (welling up inside you) - autistic!cass needs to figure out if they're sisters before they make out, which is fair
lost in translation is sooo cute like Cass thinks Steph is afraid of her because she's never seen a crush enacted upon her before and so like nerves and butterflies are coming off all wrong lmao. Cass's bodyreading skills can't defend her against the useless lesbian pitfall of SHE LIKES YOU OH MY GOD
finally for today, sanctuary in haunted city #1 is a no-capes au where Cass has been off in Hong Kong for a while and Steph has somehow never even heard of her despite being incredibly involved with the Wayne family (still dated Tim, for example). Cass moves back to Gotham and Steph is immediately smitten. it also has a bit of the "are you my sister" angst but really only for like, six seconds. sooo cute
anyway more people should write stephcass fics. it's on my list after the bajillion of other projects I'm in the middle of but until I get my life together and write every idea I've ever had I beg of all of you to please just write something for stephcass they deserve it

god my fav things about like genderswap AUs is asking like, how does this change the way the characters navigate the world or how other characters treat them, right? so like. I JUST IMAGINE LESBIAN DANIEL AS BEING EVEN MORE PRICKLY. So sick of being treated like a girl all the time, so hyper-aware of all deficits in her experience based on how sexism has treated her, MAYBE POSSIBLY MORE WARY OF CREEPS, EVEN CREEPS WHO ARE WOMEN LIKE ARMAND. Is she as unsafe, as blithely monsterfuckig??? Does he have an ounce of self preservation and survival instinct? Is it harder for fem!Armand to find her when she flees around the world?!? ALSO LIKE. I always wonder how many other characters get swapped in these situations like is Louis also a woman? Did Daniel go interview some fucking man in a seedy room all by herself???????? Where's her safety rules at I gotta know. AND ARMAND. Armand. God. I feel like the cult grinds people's personalities down so much like almost as if every COD vampire was this genderless wraith. Does that change for her? Even as a boy Armand had such a fuckd up life like HOW MUCH WORSE COULD IT REALLY GET FOR HER LOL. And like is CLAUDIA still a girl like where's the jealousy at between them? thereS JUST SO MUCH TO DISCUSS
I am so glad there’s people actually wondering about the intricacies of this because for me it’s just like woah it would be so hot if they were women hghgh but i love thinking about this so much!!!!
LESBIAN DANIEL WOULD BE SO PRICKLY!!! She is so tired of the world’s shit and I can not blame her one bit. “So sick of being treated like a girl all the time” YES!!!!!! Her gender is dyke and she’s butch <3 (this is totally not me projecting) i feel like she’d experience a lot of sexism that really ties into homophobia so she’s had to learn fend for herself and not take anyone’s shit.
Lesbian Daniel is still the ultimate monster fucker I think <33 she wants these vampires so badly it makes her look stupid! I do think she’d be more wary of Armand in the beginning though like I can not imagine her taking public transportation in the dead of night 😭 no leaping out of a taxi into traffic for lesbian Daniel lmao and I also think she’d be great at not giving strangers the time of day so it might take her a bit longer to warm up to her (but at the same time are they really strangers after hearing about her from Louis and then being locked in a cellar by her? 🤔 HGHG like they are literally uhaul lesbians)
AND I AM ALWAYS GOING BACK AND FORTH ON WHOS ALL GENDERSWAPPED!!!! Because sure ideally i love thinking about them all being women but narratively that doesn’t work out!!! Akasha’s plot line is redundant if there’s no men lol also would Gabrielle feel as estranged from everyone if there were no men?? And just like historically it doesn’t make sense </3 personally the people I would love to be genderswapped are daniel and armand (obviously lol) but also lestat and louis maybe nicki?? umm i think that quinn could be a woman too. As a treat <3 but everyone else I’m convinced could be the same I’d love to see how chaotic that story goes (also i need bianca my beloved to stay the same so that we can have venice lesbians <3)
AND ARMANDDD Armand… It would probably get so much worse for her 😭I feel like she would really really latch on to Allesandra like more than canon simply because they’re both women in the cult. Also because Armand is a woman I feel like she would need to try way harder to command everyone’s respect and fear she would have to be VICIOUS (said while twirling my hair and giggling) and while gender stuff is probably the least of her concerns when all of this is going down I think it would still fuck with her over time, especially considering canon Armand’s intricacies with gender. Would she feel like she has to perform feminity to be taken seriously? Or does she play into her androgyny (not that she has much of a choice)? But I can totally see her and Daniel having one of their big talks about gender and how they relate to it
THERE IS SO SERIOUSLY SO MUCH TO DISCUSS ABOUT THIS AND TY FOR TALKING TO ME ABOUT IT! <3 my asks and dms are always open to anyone who wants to talk about gay vampires I feel like I could go on forever about them

New Intro Post!
I feel like I've gotten a fair amount of new followers lately and also wanted to kind of put all my important links/info in one place, so hence, it is time for a new pinned post!
Fanfic Stuff!
I'm KChan88 over on A03! Link is here.
If you follow me for Les Mis (and other French nonsense) the fics I'm most known for are Les Hommes de la Misericorde and Between the Soul and the Star (plus, a lot of other Les Amis fic).
If you follow me for yet more French nonsense, i.e. Phantom of the Opera, my big fics in that fandom are my Lesbian Girl Raoul fics, She Was Bound to Love You and When She Heard You Sing.
If you follow me for magic space monks, i.e. Star Wars, I'm most known for my Shoulder the Sky series, which includes the RoTS fix-it of the same name and its sequel, Whispers From the Dead. I also write a lot of QuinObi fic and will be running a week for them in October. You can find the sideblog for that here. I love the Jedi, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padme, Quinlan, the Skywalker twins, Kanan, Ezra, and you know, many more.
I'm currently working on a new prequels-era long fic called Kill the Lights!
Original Writing Stuff!
I also have an ongoing historical pirates series called The Constellation Trilogy, of which the first two installments (Sailing by Orion's Star and Sailing by Carina's Star) are out now! The third installment, Sailing by Gemini's Star, will be out in 2024. This series started out as a Les Mis fic many moons ago, so if you're looking for that fic it is now an original trilogy! All the important buy links and other info (newsletter, website, other social media) for the pirate trilogy is right here in one handy place! And if you read the books and like them, feel free to drop a review on GR or Amazon! It always helps.
Other Stuff!
This blog is a grab bag of all kinds of things! Les Mis, musical theater, PIRATES (including the best TV show ever, Black Sails), history and historical fiction, queer stuff, fanfic and original writing, Star Wars (Obi-Wan my dearly beloved and the prequels especially), and other books and movies and TV shows I like.
Also I'm very friendly so please feel free to message me or send asks!

Don't know if I missed my shot, about what about yandere integra and Sera(if it's allowed, otherwise I understand) from hellsing sharing a darling together? SFW and NSFW headcanon
Integra would probably do her research to ensure that her status as a "virgin" according to the archaic vampiric term is still applicable with her Darling; basically according to Church law, as long as she isn't penetrated by a penis, then she is technically a virgin. What can I say, the Church of England and vampiric lore didn't take lesbianism into account. So as long as she isn't on the receiving end of a strap, she won't turn into a Ghoul.
Seras is already a vampire and thus doesn't have to worry about that. As a servant of Integra (she's her master's master), she has an innate desire to please her mistress and is thus very eager to do so. She doesn't have any real experience with sex since she was a virgin when she was turned...and neither does Integra. Integra's read old works and has a small interest in historical artwork of women "entangled" with each other though, so she at least has some idea of what she wants to do.
Integra often uses Darling as a reward to encourage Seras to do well on a mission. Not only that but she finds spending evenings with the two of them her favorite way to relax, second only to a cigar and some brandy. She may even feel extra indulgent and enjoy a smoke and/or a drink after the three of them have all collapsed onto her silk sheets.
Integra's very reluctant to relinquish control and is naturally a dominant partner. Her Darling is a confidant, a beloved gem, and a treasured plaything. And she's very good at reminding her pets who they belong to, even if this is her first time doing so with a human instead of a vampire. Seras finds submission to her mistress almost intoxicating, and following Integra's demands gives her a subconscious feeling of pleasure. Integra knows this and will get Seras riled up by ordering her to strip Darling, to toy with her while Integra watches and touches herself for a bit.
Seras feels a slight kinship with Darling since they both belong to Integra, but she also has more power than Darling since she's a vampire. So in her mind, Darling is an endearing sweetheart who she wants to keep safe. Though that's only part of it. Sometimes her instincts will get the better of her; she'll want to mark Darling, enjoy a taste of her blood, and consume every inch of her inside and out. Integra has to make sure to keep an eye on Seras when she's primal like this, since she could easily hurt Darling on accident.
Integra doesn't send Darling out on missions and will instead have them work from the mansion as her personal assistant. The power imbalance would exist regardless but having her Darling be her secretary just adds to it in a way she loves.
Seras and Integra have both fucked Darling and each other while wearing their gloves, and Integra especially enjoys having Darling be naked or scantily clad while Integra herself is more clothed. Again it adds to that power imbalance. She and Seras love seeing Darling wearing their clothes, especially as loungewear or pajamas.

✨Meet the Blorbos✨
Or: a small guide to my characters and AUs in Dragon Age universe. They’re all in continuity, I played more than once and suffer from a sever case of indecision, so here you go.
A small scheme, and more details under the cut! Yes they're colour coded of course.
Dragon Age Origins: Alyra Mahariel. Double-wielding Rogue, Duelist + Bard, True Neutral, ❤️ Alistair / Morrigan
Dragon Age II: Raina Hawke. Double-wielding Rogue, Shadow, Chaotic Good, ❤️Merrill+Isabela > The Trash Raccoon Garrett Hawke. Mage, Spirit Healer + Blood mage, Chaotic Good, ❤️ Fenris
Dragon Age Inquisition: Aisling Lavellan. Mage, Lightning + Knight Enchanter, Neutral Good, ❤️Cullen Radha Lavellan. Double-wielding Rogue, Tempest, True Neutral, ❤️ Solas
THE AUs:
DadWolf AU: Modern time AU, follows da2 + Inquisition. Solas woke up 30 years before, Varric is older and Malcolm's best friend. They co-parent Aisling and Dorian, shenanigans happen.
Dark Lady AU: Someone on Instagram asked me if Aisling was Sauron. It's a crossover between Dragon Age and LOTR/The Silmarillion where Aisling is Sauron. "It was all a big misunderstanding". Read it here!
Whale AU: Fully historical, non fantasy AU. Aisling is a zoologist with an hyperfixation for sperm whales, she saves Cullen, a harpooner after a shipwreck caused by a whale.
Cuties Coexisting: A parallel world, Fenris met the Lavellan and hid with them until Act 2 in Dragon Age. Fenris/Lavellan, very very angsty, I'm not planning on writing more of it, but it's open for prompts if you like it. Read it here! (named by @/daggerbean )
Alyra Mahariel
Tumblr media
Double-wielding Rogue, Duelist + Bard, the shade of True Neutral that’s tired of everyone’s shit and is not remotely paid enough to deal with your problems, but will do it anyway because somebody might as well.
No-shit-taken person, she appears to be cold and unsympathetic, dued to the mother of all resting bitch face and the nice tendency to not blink when you’re saying something particularly stupid and she wants to underline that she’s judging you. Will go down in a fight when she’s dead, and it will take a while to kill her. Under the surface she’s very caring: her Vallaslin is for Sylaise, the goddess of the Hearth, and she will do many things to protect her loved ones. She’s reliable, once you’re on her good side or she feels responsible in keeping you alive, she will. Would manage to sell ice cubes to penguins.
Pansexual and poly, romanced both Morrigan and Alistair. Currently Warden-Commander of Fereldan, in a tense relationship with Weisshaupt, Arlessa of Amaranthine and Chancellor (and mistress) of King Alistair. Did the ritual, Kieran is 100% her son if you ask her. Don’t speak good of the Guerrins to her.
Raina Hawke
Tumblr media
Double-wielding Rogue, Shadow, Chaotic DumbassGood and official Purple trash raccoon.
Would reply with a witty remark even in a life or death situation, is the queen of awful coping mechanisms. Very street-wise, never had some formal training, learnt everything on the go becoming something very difficult to predict in a fight. Human disaster, disappointed her mother in every single one of her life choices, on purpose after Malcolm died and the mediator between them was no more. She took care of the farm and her siblings, will go the extra mile and some to keep everyone safe and fed and warm, but refused to abide to any other request. Is the chilliest person in the world, will not question and be friendly -if you like a witty, sarcastic friend that is- until you step outside her boundaries. Won’t shut up if the ideals she believes in are crossed, and can’t stand people in power who do nothing. She knits like her life depend on it, all her friends have hand-knitted garments as gifts. Will only refer to Varric as “Her beloved husband”, particularly if there’s Bianca around.
Lesbian, in a happy poly relationship (after fucking up gloriously with both) with Merrill and Isabela. Sided with the Mages, exiled Anders at the end. Carver with the Wardens, Bethany in the Circle, if you ask her it’s all her fault.
Garrett Hawke
Tumblr media
Mage, Blood mage + Spirit healer, Chaotic Good and the one who just knew he would have better stayed in his bed today. He knew it.
One year younger than Raina, they grew up together, joined at the hip. He just wants to live a peaceful life, have his own farm, grow pumpkins and cabbages and go with the flow. As it is, will let Raina lead towards the next crazy adventure and tone her down a little, or catch her when she’s choosing something overtly risky. It was him who convinced Raina to take Carver but leave Bethany at home for the Deep Roads and he never really forgave himself for it. Particularly because Raina took the blame for it. Got the message from Malcolm that if he wanted to make it as an Apostate, the number one rule was to lay low, be pleasant. Will not stay at home if his family or friends are in danger, tho. Learnt Spirit Healing from Anders, but he’s not extremely talented for it: knows the basics, can stitch up cuts, his talent with Spirits are bones. Learnt Blood magic spending more and more time with Merrill when she moved in with Raina, and that’s his talent. He usually mixes the two things: if he’s a mediocre healer with Spirits, he is pretty talented drawing energy from blood, manipulating it and the body to heal. Keen for the same reason on manipulating and using Water in his magic. Everything that flows. Has a severe case of Dad humour.
Bisexual, romanced Fenris. Same choices as Raina, he would have forced Anders to fix his mess up, but considering he used him and his sister and de facto involved them without telling them… Didn’t put up a fight.
Aisling Lavellan
Tumblr media
Mage, Lightning + Knight Enchanter. So much of a Neutral Good she is your mom friend and therapist and she's not cottagecore, she's directly grandma-core. Will ask if you ate. And serve you something more anyway.
She was adopted by the Lavellans at 6 and put her whole effort into becoming the best Second ever. And she managed: she passed as First as soon as she got her Vallaslin. The former First, Pavyn, was more socially savvy than her, but didn’t put her effort. Could be a Spirit Healer, but when she was 20 she had to restore to Blood Magic to save her friend and got scared that she never touched any Healing spell again. Instead, she’s a decent herbalist, convinced that everything can be solved with enough Elfroot treated in the necessary way. Horse Girl extraordinaire and a very practical person who likes to work more than to talk. Nice and welcoming, will give a second chance to almost everyone (the big exception is Erimond). Hates being called the Herald of Andraste. Magically very savvy, she’s not the most powerful spellcaster around, but she’s extremely precise: would catch a running rabbit with a lightning. Loves to experiment on magic with Dorian, they formed a great team working together: he theorizes, she puts in practice, they’ll invent teleportation given enough time.
Bisexual, romanced Cullen (tried to romance Cassandra, you can mock her for having a Templar kink). The Inquisition is for all, strongly refused being the Herald of Andrasted. Mages as full-fledged allies, Wardens rehabilitated, Celene reconciled with Briala and on the throne (with some blackmail just in case, but she couldn’t bring herself to like Gaspard or trust he won’t turn on Briala at the first chance). Didn’t drink from the Well, disbanded the Inquisition and became a Red Jenny. Chose to redeem Solas if that was possible.
Radha Lavellan.
Tumblr media
Rogue, Tempest. True Neutral and a person who’ll read you in five minutes, the Keeper told her her Vallaslin was either Dirthamen or none.
Elder adopted sister of Aisling, she and Pavyn (eldest) are the sons of the Keeper. She stood around mages for enough to know some theory and use it for her specialization. A woman of few words, won’t speak if she has nothing important to say, and passes as haughty and judgemental even if she’s not. She just likes to observe people and gather every single scrap of knowledge she can get her hands upon. She should have been the one to travel to the Conclave and spy, but Aisling convinced the Keeper and the Clan to go in her place. Feeling guilty, she jumped on the first ship as soon as Aisling wrote and told them she had to stay with the Inquisition, to help her. Sees her as her responsibility, and struggled to accept the fact that she was not. Since it was clear when she arrived at Skyhold that Aisling couldn’t get back to the clan any time soon, she joined in, and started to work with Leliana, as a spy. And oh she’s good at it. Hurt her hand badly in a fight, her right hand can’t grab fully and isn’t strong at all. Learnt to work around it, is pretty much ambidextrous in activities that doesn’t require a strong grip.
Romanced Solas. (ouch) Didn’t agree with Aisling on the Wardens, Celene or the Well of Sorrows, but she was the one educated to lead, and she trusts her judgement.

happy international lesbian day, this is your local certified, legally recognized, card-carrying lesbian scholar (who writes about lesbian history) here to recommend you my five favorite books on lesbianism and/or lesbian writers that i have come across in my research (including those that were a part of my master's thesis)
The Literature of Lesbianism by Terry Castle This book was the bible to my thesis work. It helped me navigate writers I never knew of surrounding the topic of lesbianism. Some of my absolute favorite writers are contained in this book and the bibliographies for each section were crucial for me.
Surpassing the Love of Men by Lillian Faderman This book was one of the ones that inspired my entire topic. I have also had the pleasure of talking with Faderman about lesbian history and her new efforts in trans history, read any of her books your life will be changed.
Priestess of Morphine by Ronald Siegel Siegel's work is typically in the realm of drug history which was his approach in initially finding this subject. However, the result was a deep-dive into the history of pseudonym a lesbian whose writings were beloved in lesbian Berlin prior to the second world war. Her work is phenomenal and her impact has been largely overlooked. Tread lightly if anything related to WWII is triggering!
When Romeo Was a Woman by Lisa Merrill This was not a book I included in my thesis work (if I had included Charlotte Cushman it would have been 100+ pages longer lbr) however this is a beautiful collection of work that I think any theatre loving lesbian should read.
Open Me Carefully by Ellen Hart and Martha Smith Emily Dickinson is a well-covered historical lesbian who initially I had not planned on including in my research due to how heavily she is covered. However, the literal erasure of her lesbianism from her manipulated archives is so important to researching any queer person that I think it is very important to look into for future preservation.
I have 85984590684 other resources I could go on and on about but instead I will leave it here. I love being a lesbian, I love being a genderless lesbian, I love lesbians of all genders, levels of disability, races, body types, and expressions. I do a large portion of my academic research for lesbians specifically and I hope that some day everyone can read the beautiful history of queerness and see how far we have come as well as how far we need to continue going.

Currently watching: I started watching the new Percy Jackson series but I love it so much that I'm not going to watch the rest until I've reread the books
Three ships: Merlin and Arthur from BBC Merlin, Anne and Diana from Anne with an E, Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens
Favourite colour: sage green
Currently consuming: too much time
First ship: Tenth Doctor and Rose from Doctor Who (they still have a special place in my heart)
Relationship status: like if a spinster from the Victorian Era was a gen Z lesbian
Last movie: the honest answer is Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow, because I had a fairytopia marathon with my high school friends this afternoon. the slightly cooler answer is Poor Things, which is the most batshit film I've ever seen but it's really growing on me
Currently working on: I'm sewing a corset to help support my scoliosis. It's going to be dusty pink with matching lace trim, I'll post a pic when I've done more work on it. also I hit it off with the sales assistant at the fabric shop, she's also gay and AuDHD and we have the same rare connective tissue disorder (EDS) and she knows a lot about historical costume design (very attractive trait). she gave me her insta. I think we're soulmates

my main wip
Tumblr media
project time stealers - novel - contemporary romance with a side of witchy, fantastical elements (currently drafting)
brief synopsis
Fern is tired, and she's lonely—Addie is floating, taking each day as it comes. But neither is happy, and maybe that's how they find themselves stuck in a time stopped, eternal summer. All they have is an excess of time, and each other, but things are not quite as they seem. For this time stopped state carries with it the whisperings of magic they never thought possible.
And, they're not the only ones stuck here....
excerpt
This girl is dazzlingly eye-catching, that’s Fern’s first thought. She’s bright in the way some might ache to be, effortlessly so, with a baggy blue graphic t-shirt to match her vibrant blue box braids and a nose piercing. A new face, and an interesting one.
other wips
the remains (working title) - poetry collection - from reflective poetry on my musings of growing up religious and lesbian to historical poetry on long forgotten lesbian history, this collection is a love letter to the things we've left behind (currently drafting)
sarracenia's dying day - short story - an attempt at gothic literary ghost girls (editing/revising)

Okay forget about my crush on Jo, Valcita has my undying love now. I'm sorry Jo but I see a masculine woman and all thoughts are gone. Anyways, I love Jo's new look! Ah and a restaurant? Everything she deserves ugh this save is so fluffy! I'm going to be in a world of pain for when we go back to the 1930s ❤️ - LGL
Gasp! A new lesbian has appeared on the scene and it’s your moment to prove that namesake correct yet again 😌
But come, come, dearest LGL, let’s sit…
Tumblr media
The time of your beloved AU happy fluffy time may come to an end faster than I had initially planned. The 1930s now has me in an absolute death grip. I cannot stop thinking about it or writing for it, so alas, many of my plans in the AU have been dashed (including your beloved Rosella but I hope my new offering of Valcita can make up for it).
I still plan to reach the end of this arc in the modern day, mostly because it’s begun to bleed into our historical universe, and there are multiple strings to connect before we move on back into the world of pain. I did warn you after all that there was no determining how long we’d stay there for 😉

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love❤
Okay, I'm not sure I really want to pass it on, sorry, anon. If anyone else wants to do it, they're free to do so, though.
Onto the fic recs!
By Any Other Name is very special to me, because it's my girls. My beloved disaster lesbians. It is also my only current historical Hetalia fanfic.
In bocca al lupo is smut (so only 18+ readers, thank you). I'm very proud of it.
Now comes the problem of most of my fanfics being parts of a series, so third and fourth will be Anatinae and Cyanocoracinae, the first and (currently) last part of my series Birdbrains. Don't be frightened by the weird names, it's a modern day AU where the characters all have weird hobbies and are living their lives. First part I recommend because I think it has some really funny jokes (the whole series is kept in a light tone), and the last part is my magnum opus until I write part eight. It's going to be incomprehensible unless you read the parts in between though, sorry about that, this is actually seven recommendations in a trench suit.
A Job Interview as the last one (I promise it's going to update any time now). It's my current WIP, and people apparently really like it? It's popular? I hate the title, but I can't think of a better one to save my life.
All of this is Spamano, because I'm sappy like that. Birdbrains currently has PruCan, RusAme, and FrUK too.

In fairness what's on the DNI isn't something someone would know from a quick scroll of my blog. It listed mspec lesbian supporters and proshippers. Which like
A: I'm not a lesbian so I'm not about to tell lesbians what to do or who gets to be counted as one but also I know a buuuuuuuunch of lesbians in relationships with their bi girlfriends and wives and literay none of them care if their bi partners call themselves lesbians too. Same with he/him lesbians- I'm black and stud culture is a black butch thing and I'm not about to tell black butches and studs what they can and cannot do when they have a long, documented, established culture of breaking gender and sex rules while being lesbians. So I guess that makes me a supporter 🤷‍♂️ I'm trans-old, my role models growing up were butches since trans guys were practically invisible, I'm gunna leave this to "whatever my beloved lesbian and butch friends decide is what goes" and these friends have decided it's fine actually.
B: I'm also fandom old and prefer a common-sense approach to fandom and shipping which can really be summed up with "yeah I think it's fucked up that people ship the rugrats babies *as babies* together, but also the very creators of the show aged them up to be still-minors high school teenagers and then started pairing them off romantically, so there should probably be a middle ground here" and "it is weird to me to see 45yos invested in making fictional minors kiss, that being said a lot of real minors use their favorite fictional characters to explore themselves and often time those are also fictional minors so it's hard to restrict one without restricting the other" and "I think shipping real living people is weird, also I like noted historical fiction stories where real people [who are dead now] are being shipped together or with OCs, so where are we drawing the line here"
Does that make me proship? To some, yes. To others, no. To me it makes me pro "use your brain and block content you don't like, people"

was wondering why it’d been so surprising to me that kennedy & davis’s methodology (treating oral histories as historical documents & performing thematic analysis accordingly) was considered revolutionary in the academy (after publication so we’re talking mid-90s at the earliest) when i couldn’t conceptualize of what acting otherwise would even look like
and then i realized it’s because my introduction to sociological research was through conducting semi-structured oral history interviews with longtime local [in scale, not to me] activists, by way of a leftist engineer, so like, of course this is data and you code it.
& it’s so fascinating to think like… maybe the impact of this research methodology (which is itself owed to Indigenous knowledges, as they credit) unbeknownst to him rippled to affect my late mentor who then taught me. like there are definitely some weirdos (beloved) in environmental engineering who could be super into butch/fem &/or lesbian history or have a (even small) background in gender studies that was influenced by this & similar work
