one of my favorite things is to see how monuments and art/architecture were protected during times of war.
Tumblr media
Taj Mahal
Tumblr media
Ameins Cathedral
Tumblr media
Cologne Cathedral
All of this took place during WWII
along with the monuments of men who were tasked to protect artworks.
I FEEL LIKE THIS WOULD BE GREAT FART HISTORY!!

Lizzo Goes to the Library. (And makes history cool.)
Pretty good discussion of the absurdity of their objections.
The video of her playing it in the Library of Congress is actually more impressive than at the show. She's crazy-talented, notes crisp and not overly breathy. Crystal both adds and detracts from an instrument. For reasons mostly related to the odd interior shape of my mouth, I had (and still have) a crystal mouthpiece for my clarinet. The problem with crystal is that it can make something sound cold, for lack of a better term, even if the rest of the instrument is wood. This flute didn't sound cold in her hands. I'd love to hear a longer piece from her on it.
WaPo had an article that went into how she got to play it with interesting details.

I’m reading 15th century documents for one of my classes and I found a word that I think is an example of the Tiffany Problem.
Hanker
I immediately think of modern rural America, maybe back to the late 1800’s when I hear that. “Got a hankering for something good for dinner tonight.”
But this was written in 1462.
“Do not hanker in your heart after that which is not yours.”

Imagine trying to explain to a woman from the 1800s how much money women in the 21st century can make for just showing their foot to a man.

This edition from ca. 1624 just came to my attention. There must have been earlier versions in Dutch, but those are not extant. First edition in French is from 1489. According to an article I found, it was enormously popular in the early seventeenth century, but it was forbidden by the censor, possibly because of references to witchcraft in the text…

The most horrifying aspect of parents saying "my kid could do that" about art is that they never ever ever mean "wow my kid is good enough to be in a museum" and they always always always mean "I want to disrespect you so much I'll do it by implying that this thing is just as worthless as the things my child makes with their hands" and right in front of them too. Your kids can hear you u know, and the things they make with their hands are the least worthless and most precious aspects of human life I'll kill u

Sunshine State residents, do you recognize this little neighbor? It’s the Florida softshell turtle (Apalone ferox)! Unlike many turtles, you might find this critter darting about on land or swimming rapidly in water. Its hydrodynamic, flattened shell, and four strongly-webbed feet help it to move swiftly. Softshells stick mostly to water and have long necks and snouts that they poke above the surface, like a snorkel, to breathe. Juveniles have more contrasting color patterns than adults: their carapace, or shell, can be olive, tan, or light brown with spots and a yellow rim.

Uhhh sooooo NYC 80’s punk scene AU where ed used to play in bands when younger but not anymore & runs a popular venue and is totally burned out on the scene. Until a blonde weirdo wearing pastels started coming to shows there and he had to understand what is going on with this guy?? And the guy wants to learn more about this world and Ed confused but ends up having more fun than he has in ages??

I think it's so adorable that early humans took wild gourds - a tiny fruit that hollows out as it dries, making it float - and decided to make something out of it
Tumblr media
they thought the tiny fruit was so good that they bred it for thousands of years, making it larger to form into bowls and cups, and different shapes to become bottles and spoons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and musical instruments
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, people took the hollow gourds they farmed, and they turned them into houses for birds. We adapted them into the perfect houses for birds, and now there are specific breeds of birdhouse gourd just for making into birdhouses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And humans dedicated gardening space and time and thousands of years of breeding to make the gourds so absolutely perfect for birds, that there is a species of bird that lives almost exclusively in them
