Helen Mirren, 1967.
Tumblr media
Today, Dame Helen Mirren is known as a respected Shakespearean actress, one who cut her teeth in the Royal Shakespeare Company and has continued to act in stage productions by the Bard and other revered playwrights throughout her career. And they don't let just anyone play the sitting Queen of England, which she's done twice (she's also portrayed Queens Elizabeth I and Charlotte). But everyone starts out young, don't they? In the 1960s, while doing her Shakespearean thing, Mirren was also a budding sex symbol, flaunting her figure in such films as Age of Consent (1969), Savage Messiah (1972) and Caligula (1979). Mirren's tendency to get sexy -- if not naked -- on screen was so well known that in 2015 she announced she was officially retiring from nude scenes. She was 70.

28th December 1734, death of Scottish folk hero and outlaw Robert Roy MacGregor more commonly known as Rob Roy. Rob Roy joined the Jacobite rising of 1689, 1715 and 1719. All the Jacobite uprisings as well as the last in 1745, attempted politically and militarily to restore a Catholic monarch to the British throne. Upon the failure of the risings, Roy tried to become a respectacle Cattleman, but was branded an outlaw after defaulting on a loan. His lands were then seized by the 1st Duke of Montrose, whereupon Roy waged a blood feud against the Duke until 1722, when he was finally imprisoned. The following year the exploits of his life were fictionalised as' The Highland Rogue’, which made him a legend earning him a pardon. His folk legend was still well established in the next century with William Wordsworth poem 1803 "Rob Roy's Grave" The Wordsworth’s 1803 tour of Scotland was documented in Recollections of a Tour Made in Scotland by his sister Dorothy (whose birthday was on the 25th). In 1817, Sir Walter Scott published ‘Rob Roy’, which is the most well known account of his life. The book influenced Hector Berlioz to compose a Rob Roy overture in 1831. #robroy #scottishhistory #scottishhistoricalromance #scottishhighlands #jacobite #jacobites #jacobiterebellion #folkhero #folkheroes #williamwordsworth #williamwordsworthquote #robroysgrave #scotlandhighlands #historicalillustration #historic #historydaily #historyonyourdoorstep #otd #onthisdayinhistory #hectorberlioz #walterscott #historyofscotland #scotlandthebrave #18thcenturyhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CJWOQ_ZHG_j/?igshid=5cvyb631dqqs

BELLISSIMO #Repost @matteigaluppi #inrepostme @insaver.best —— #Repost @historydailypix • • • • • • Yasuke was more than a Netflix series: He was an African slave who journeyed to Japan in the 17th century, became a samurai, and served as an elite bodyguard for a shogun. How does a man rise from slavery to such a vaunted position, especially in feudal Japan? Records from 500 years ago are pretty spotty, if not nonexistent, so we don't know the exact year of Yasuke's birth. In fact, we don't even know for sure which country he was born in, but historians believe the imposing 6'2 warrior may have hailed from either Mozambique, Nigeria, or Ethiopia. At some point in the first few decades of his life, Yasuke was probably captured and enslaved by an Italian Jesuit priest named Alessandro Valignano, but some historians believe that Yasuke was Valignano's paid manservant, more of a bodyguard. In 1579, Valignano joined a group of missionaries departing on an inspection tour of Japan, and Yasuke got his first introduction to the country where he would become a legend. Read Yasuke's legendary career as the first African Samurai ever, at the link in our bio #japanesehistory #yasuke #netflix #samurai #ancientjapan #japan #history #historydaily (presso Bagnaia, Lazio, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CISrROBBI6y/?igshid=1uypo22oi7dle

Baia, The Sunken Roman City
"Baia, Italy was an ancient city of Rome that was on the shore of the Gulf of Naples. Now it is considered part of Bacoli in the region of Campania. From 100 BC to 500 AD, the extremely rich and elite were the ones who had built luxurious villas in this area and Baia was one of these resorts that stood for centuries. The city itself was named after the helmsman of Odysseus’s ship in Homer’s Odyssey, who was said to have been buried close by. Even though the area was an active volcanic area, the city was still built on the Cumaean Peninsula in the Phlegraean Fields.  Historical figures like Julius Caesar had a villa in this city and a lot of the town became the property of Augustus. Nero also had a villa built here in the middle of the 1st century with Hadrian, a Roman Emperor, dying here in 138 AD.  There was also another emperor whose name was Septimius Severus, who loved the place, as it was his favorite place to be. Items were left on display here that once belonged to Pompey’s daughter, Pompeia Magna. She had given them to Tiberius – items such as a brooch, a cloak and gold bulla around the time of 120 AD. The ground was lowered below sea level in two phases. The first phase was between the 3rd and 5th centuries and then submerged more substantially a century later. By the 8th century, the lower part of the city was largely submerged by the sea. There were a few temples in the city and these structures were dome-like in nature, which included the Temple of Mercury, the Temple of Diana and the Temple of Venus. The Temple of Diana was used for thermal baths as it was collecting vapors from the ground below which is now half-collapsed. Having been a prominent resort city for so long, catering to the powerful Roman elite, the city was also famous for having healing hot springs that were medicinal. Because these springs were all around the city, it was easy to build spas over them. As beautiful as this underground city was, it did not last as the Saracens sacked it in the 8th century and by 1500, the only remains were abandoned. Once the place was abandoned, the water level rose because of volcanic action and drowned most of the ancient ruins."
