The Hitman's Bodyguard/The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard
So my firetv was advertising The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and since I never saw The Hitman's Bodyguard, I thought what the heck, I'm always in the mood for a Ryan Reynolds film plus I love the bodyguard trope, it's my favorite thing ever, so let's watch both of these films.
The Hitman's Bodyguard is a pretty solid film in my opinion. It was enjoyable in just not a funny comedic and action way that you would expect these types of films to be but also enjoyable as far as story-telling, character development, i enjoyed it.
Now, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, also enjoyable in its own way would have been good if it were not attached to the first film. So little in this movie actually makes sense in conjunction with the first film. Whole parts of the film just seem to have been completely forgotten in this one. From where the characters ended in the first movie to where they're at in the beginning of the second movie, makes very little sense. It's like the writers loosely remembered what happened in the first film and then wrote the sequel just based off of memory. While I was watching this movie, it kind of felt like The Whole Ten Yards (RIP Matthew Perry) in that it's just crazy and ridiculous in the beginning and you don't understand what's going on but then it throws you the curveball at the end that all the craziness was on purpose and part of a con; so I kept waiting for this movie to drop a similar curveball thinking something else must be up to tie this whole thing together. Spoiler alert: it doesn't, it's just crazy (although I did enjoy the aspect of Selma Hayek's character adopting Ryan Reynold's character as hers and Samuel L Jackson's adoptive son, that was funny and kind of adorable and I want to read fanfiction about it).
First movie, is fun but you can also take it seriously. This movie is ridiculous, over the top, crazy kind of fun but not in a way that enriches your experiences with the characters from the first film. It would've been a fun romp if it was its own thing not attached to the first one. But since it is attached to the first one, just lots of things don't make sense in it. But I still had a good time so I'm not mad at it.

And I've finally seen all the movies on my must-see summer list for this year -- skipped Hitman’s Bodyguard’s Wife because I read the spoilers and realized it wasn’t worth my time!
My favorites were definitely In The Heights, The Suicide Squad, Luca, Respect, and Free Guy.

Day 2 & 3 - Big Fly
“The jury’s still out on this (and I could be angrily updating this through rage tears), but my checked luggage was tagged with “CAN” on it, and the Delta worker said it was going to be checked clear to Guangzhou since my Beijing layover was so short (<6 hours). Unclear if that’s because they bumped up my tickets, or if that’s standard regardless of your ticket class.”
Tumblr media
No rage tears, but I did have to pick up and re-check my luggage, and by the time I got the Beijing airport, they had apparently scrambled all my shit and I had to wait at the kiosk for 30 minutes before they resolved my ticket. I really thought I was going to be stuck in Beijing for the next day or so and I’d have to unfuck it with my own money.
ALSO Tumblr is blocked in China and I didn’t feel like putting the work into getting a VPN, so this is why I’m writing this literally two months later in January.
Before we talk about Beijing though, I should talk about the flight itself. As expected, business class is swanky as shit, with a travel kit I did not open and immediately gave to my parents upon arrival in China because they can make use of that, a fancy food menu, a gigante screen, and a shit ton of leg room, including a seat that could recline all the way down and be complete flat (!!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I actually have to be honest - the food was only okay. I didn’t think it was markedly better than the food you normally get on international flights, but there certainly was a lot of it. The appetizer bit that shown above was probably actually my favorite because I love cheese and bread and cured meats.
Tumblr media
Any, fast reviews! Spoilers ahead.
Annihilation - way more gore and horror than I thought it would be (probably because I didn’t bother doing any research on this movie, but I liked it. Definitely felt like Arrival as a horror movie. Shades of Amigara Fault when Natalie Portman climbs into the hole at the end.
In Bruges - I suspect anti-Americanism was much hipper when this movie was made because a third of the jokes in the first half are at my country's expense. Anyway I hated the entire first half and skipped to the end after I saw Ralph Fiennes' first on-screen appearance is just him screaming at his wife.
Author’s note: a lot of this was written contemporaneously and is being edited on the fly, but I just wanted to comment that I apparently only watched two movies on the way over to China? How did that happen?
Alright, so here’s what happened when I was in Beijing. As you can see, the check-in part is where everything went to bullshit.
PEK SPEEDRUN, 11/17/2018 5:30 PM - landed and disembarked 5:45 PM - cleared immigration 6:00 PM - cleared baggage and customs 6:30 PM - checked in (they couldn't find my ticket so there was a half hour stretch where I thought I would miss the flight) 6:35 PM - cleared security (lightning quick, although I received a thorough patdown on my junk) 6:40 PM - terminal 6:45 PM - boarding begins 7:00 PM - we get on the shuttle 7:15 PM - I don't know if this was actually 15 minutes, but it felt like forever on the shuttle
The flight from Beijing to Guangzhou is three hours long, so I watched another movie! I realized I had never actually seen Star Wars Attack of the Clones from end-to-end, so I gave it a whirl.
Actually, let me continue whining about In Bruges. In the one hour that I watched, I saw no redeeming qualities, which is a pretty low bar. I felt like I was taking crazy pills, so I read a review in the Guardian about why they liked it so much and skimmed a few other takes on it from Reddit. Long story short, I'm pretty sure it just isn't the kind of movie for me:
- I didn't think any of it was funny. - Colin Farrell annoyed me the entire time because he was rude and violent to everybody he meant, including slinging cheap anti-American jokes and a weird sidebar about retaliatory violence. - Am I supposed to feel sorry for a hitman who accidentally killed two people instead of just one? There's a line about how there's a Christmas tree in London with gifts that'll never be opened, but was it that hard for him to make the same level of reflection for the priest he murdered? Or anybody else he would've subsequently murdered in his job as an assassin? - What the shit was that romantic subplot with dollar store Claire Danes?
Anyway, what does this have to do with Attack of the Clones? Attack of the Clones has significantly worse writing (both plot and dialogue), significantly worse acting (literally any line by Hayden Christensen and half the lines by Natalie Portman), and worse effects (the explosion of the ship in the opening scene is impossibly bad), but I enjoyed it a hundred times more because I didn't intensely hate the main character and there's one specific dialogue that worked really well.
When Obi-Wan and Anakin are chasing Count Dooku, their ship takes damage and Padme falls out. Anakin wants to go after her, but Obi-Wan shouts him down. I felt like Obi-Wan's lines in that moment are the only ones in the entire film that last more than two exchanges and are well-acted. We kind of see this again in Revenge of the Sith because Obi-Wan's last words to Anakin are remarkably well-acted, even IT'S OVER ANAKIN I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND, which, as Russell once pointed out, is a decently well-acted line if you don't actually process the insanity of the words. Anyway, a few other points:
- Rose Byrne is in this movie! She's one of Padme's decoys. Keira Knightley played a decoy in The Phantom Menace, so I think it's funny that there's a pair of now well-known British actresses in these awful movies. - I applaud the production team for giving Padme a new outfit in every scene (whereas every other character wears the same clothes scene after scene), but they're all completely crazy town banana pants. - I'm sure somebody has pointed this out and refuted it, but is there any particular reason why Naboo had to be created and they couldn't just make Padme's homeworld Alderaan? - I fell asleep a handful of times in the movie, but I never quite figured out how/why Padme went from "don't look at me like that, it makes me uncomfortable" to "I truly love you let's get married." I feel like the bar for bodyguard sexual harassment is pretty low, and Anakin takes the bar and snaps it over his leg.
Anyway, I got to Guangzhou around midnight and we took a long drive to my cousin's empty apartment. China still has that kind of Blade Runner feel to it because of all the skyscrapers with neon lights and nearby drab looking apartments with mold growing on the side and aluminum bars on all the balconies and windows making it look like a prison.

Every 2016 Character Missing From The Suicide Squad | Screen Rant
Tumblr media
Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Suicide Squad.
What characters from the 2016 Suicide Squad movie are missing from the The Suicide Squad? The follow-up film by writer/director James Gunn boasts the largest ensemble of DC Comics characters ever gathered for a single film. Despite The Suicide Squad‘s impressive cast, it only brought back four actors and characters from the cast of the original movie.
The first Suicide Squad movie was controversial for a number of reasons. Chief among them were reports of studio interference during filming and editing, with executives at Warner Bros. wanting a lighter, more comedic film in the same vein as Guardians of the Galaxy. This conflicted with the ideas of director David Ayer, whose darker vision did not please fans of the Suicide Squad comics. There was also considerable fan backlash against the film’s take on The Joker (Jared Leto) and the costume worn by Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
Related: How The Suicide Squad Still Works As A Sequel To 2016’s Movie
Ironically, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was hired to helm the The Suicide Squad after Ayer walked away from the project. While the follow-up film has been praised by fans and critics alike, The Suicide Squad‘s box office performance hasn’t matched the first movie’s, due to surging COVID-19 numbers in the United States and a simultaneous release on the HBO Max streaming service. However, some fans are still wondering if Gunn’s film is a true sequel to the first movie or a reboot, given how most of the first movie’s cast did not return for The Suicide Squad. While some of this was according to Gunn’s design, there are other factors at play as well.
Tumblr media
Played by Will Smith and described as the most dangerous hitman in the world, Floyd “Deadshot” Lawton was one of the central characters of the 2016 Suicide Squad movie. Lawton is also one of the quintessential Squad members in the comics and James Gunn did ponder bringing him back while working on the script for The Suicide Squad. Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts meant Smith couldn’t return as Deadshot, and it was ultimately decided to use a different character with a similar background rather than recast the role. This reportedly led to Idris Elba being cast in the role of Bloodsport, who had a similar skill set to Deadshot, but was notably different as a character.
Tumblr media
One character James Gunn had no intention of bringing back for The Suicide Squad was the Clown Prince of Crime, saying that it didn’t make sense for the Joker to return. Ignoring the antipathy audiences felt for Jared Leto’s tattooed and shiny-grilled take on Joker, it beggars belief that Amanda Waller would ever let him loose or depend upon him as a covert operative, even with a bomb in his head. Given that, there was no obvious way to bring him into the story. There was also the matter of Harley Quinn having grown beyond the Joker, and there being no chance of him being anything but a distraction in an ensemble movie featuring her character.
Tumblr media
Those who haven’t seen Suicide Squad since it was first in theaters in 2016 may be surprised to recall that David Harbour had a role in it. The popular actor, now famous for playing Jim Hopper on Stranger Things and the Red Guardian in Black Widow, had a minor but important role in Suicide Squad as Dexter Tolliver. A National Security Advisor to the President of the United States, he helped Amanda Waller with selling her idea for turning Belle Reve inmates into Task Force X to the Pentagon. While it might have been possible to bring the character back to discuss the Corto Maltese mission and its importance with Waller in The Suicide Squad, it seems unlikely that Harbour would have been available given his current busy schedule.

Tumblr media
The victim of a mutation that gave him a crocodile’s skin, Waylon “Killer Croc” Jones was far gentler and smarter than his bestial frame suggested. Croc was played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who was not in a hurry to return to the role thanks to the intensive makeup work that the part required. It is unknown if Gunn decided to use King Shark instead of Killer Croc because of Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s reluctance to return, but it seems safe to say that it would have been redundant to have two man-eating beast-men in The Suicide Squad.
Tumblr media
A powerful pyrokinetic who was racked with guilt after accidentally killing his wife and children with his powers, El Diablo was one of the more conflicted members of the first Suicide Squad team. It was unlikely that he would return for The Suicide Squad, given that he sacrificed himself to defeat Incubus and the Enchantress in the climax of the first film. While such resurrections are not impossible in the world of comics, there was little reason to bring him back for another outing.
Tumblr media
Another character always unlikely to return in The Suicide Squad due to their having died in the first film was Slipknot. A master of ropes and knots who was said to be able to climb anything, he was primarily notable as the first person to die on Task Force X’s inaugural mission, after having been tricked in to trying to escape by Captain Boomerang, who used Slipknot to test if Amanda Waller’s claims to have implanted bombs in their necks was a bluff. Unfortunately for Slipknot, it was not.
Tumblr media
Acting as the personal bodyguard of Col. Rick Flag, Katana is generally agreed to have been one of the characters most ill-served by Suicide Squad. Played by Karen Fukuhara, it is unknown if Katana was left out of The Suicide Squad because of James Gunn’s desire to focus on supervillains in the follow-up film or because of Fukuhara’s not being available due to her role as Kimiko Miyashiro on The Boys. In either case, Katana and her soul-draining sword would have been incongruous to the more comedic tone of Gunn’s film.

Tumblr media
The plot of Suicide Squad centered around the Enchantress and her efforts to free the spirit of her brother, Incubus. The movie ended with both Enchantress and Incubus seemingly destroyed and Enchantress’ host, archeologist June Moone, freed from her control for good. Given that, it is unsurprising that none of them returned for The Suicide Squad.
Tumblr media
Both Batman (Ben Affleck) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) had quick cameos in the original Suicide Squad. The two heroes were both shown in flashback scenes, capturing Deadshot and Captain Boomerang respectively. Given how the 2021 movie was firmly focused on the supervillains making up Task Force X, it seems unlikely James Gunn would have brought the Justice League members back in The Suicide Squad, even if Affleck and Miller were not busy with filming the upcoming The Flash movie.

The Weekend Warrior 7/9/21 - BLACK WIDOW, SUMMERTIME, THE LONELIEST WHALE and More
Well, well... It certainly looks like I’ve been given a bit of a “bye week” to recuperate and recover from all the insanity of June, huh? The 4th of July weekend saw a nice boon for Universal Pictures with the top 3, although The Boss Baby: Family Business ended up doing better than The Forever Purge despite the former also being on Peacock. But neither of them really got great reviews, so I’m not sure either of them will have much impact on this week’s big release…
BLACK WIDOW (Marvel Studios/Disney)!
Tumblr media
Yes, after nearly two years, Marvel Studios is back in theaters with the long-awaited solo movie for Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, who has appeared in the movies going back to Iron Man 2, also played a key role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as three of the Avengers movies. The Black Widow movie goes back in time to after the events of Captain America: Civil War and before (SPOILER!) Romanoff was killed in Avengers: Infinity War. This one reunites her with her family including Florence Pugh as her sister Yelena, as the two of them want to take down the Red Room where they were trained to be killers. It also stars David Harbour as the Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as their maternal figure, and honestly, you probably don’t even need that much to know that you probably already want to see it, because IT’S MARVEL!
It’s actually hard to believe that Black Widow is Marvel’s first theatrical release since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, and obviously, that wasn’t supposed to be how things went. Marvel’s original release date for the movie was kicking off the summer of 2020, but when COVID hit and theaters were closed, it was delayed, first until the end of the year and then until the summer of 2021. It must have been difficult because Marvel had already planned a series of television series that led into the movies, including Wandavision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the currently-airing Loki.
Marvel’s first theatrical release in two years currently has a relatively decent 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, which for comparison’s sake is a better rating than Captain Marvel and Avengers: Age of Ultron, but that’s about it. I mean, at least it’s not stinking up Marvel’s track record like Iron Fist and The Inhumans did, so there’s that. I’ve already reviewed the movie, so you can read what I thought about it here.
More important than any other factor, there’s the Disney+ in the room, because Disney decided to offer Black Widow for a Premium on its streaming service this Friday, basically for $30, which I’m not sure if that’s for a certain amount of time or to own (which would make more sense). That’s a pretty sweet deal if you have a family and a nice home theater, because taking them all to the movies might cost $100 or more with concessions, etc. But for a lot of people, it’s long past time to get back to theaters, and despite the success of the Disney+ shows, many will want to see this on the big screen. At least that’s my theory, and I’m gonna stick with it until I’m proven wrong when numbers come in on Friday or Saturday.
It’s very hard to determine how many of the millions of people who went to see Avengers: Endgame over two years ago are ready to get back into theaters, but one benefit that Black Widow has over other upcoming Marvel movies (okay, well, Shang-Chi) is that Johansson’s character is a known commodity from previous movies, which certainly could have helped Tom Holland’s solo Spider-Man movies, although you would think that Spider-Man: Far from Home would have opened bigger following Endgame. To be fair, the Spider-Man movies were opening with over $100 million WELL before the MCU, showing the popularity of the character, although we also could see a bump with the second Captain America and Thor movies after their appearance in 2012’s The Avengers. Oddly, 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp didn’t see nearly as big an opening bump following Avengers: Infinity War from the first movie, but Ant-Man hadn’t been as big a player as Natasha/Black Widow. Oddly, the Spider-Man and Ant-Man movies have something in common -- they both opened in July vs. May.
The other factor, of course, is COVID and whether a movie can open even bigger than the $70 million opening weekend of F9, currently the biggest post-pandemic opener. If anything is going to do it, then it’s going to be a Marvel movie, especially one that should be as big a draw for women as for men. No, we don’t subscribe to the myth that female-led action movies don’t do as well as males ones. The MCU is all about the characters and the universe, and those factors should help Black Widow should be good for somewhere around $80 to 85 million over the weekend, which will make it the new barometer for the post-pandemic. (Incidentally, this is only about $11 million less than my original prediction from last March, and that didn’t have the COVID or streaming factor in play.)
Hey, you know what I haven’t done in a long time but probably should resume?
MY TOP 10 BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS!
1. Black Widow (Marvel/Disney) - $84.3 million N/A
2. F9 (Universal) - $9.6 million -58%
3. The Boss Baby: Family Business (Universal/DreamWorks Animation) - $9 million -45%
4. The Forever Purge (Universal) - $5.7 million -54%
5. A Quiet Place Part II (Paramount) - $2.2 million -45%
6. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard (Lionsgate) - $1.4 million -55%
7. Cruella (Disney) - $1.3 million -47%
8. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (Sony) - $1.2 million -42%
9. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (New Line/WB) - $600k -57%
10. In the Heights (New Line/WB) - $550k -43%
Although one can expect big drops all around, this should be another weekend where the top 10 domestic grosses $100 million, but that’s kind of a given with Black Widow likely to make much of that itself.
Tumblr media
I guess this week’s “Chosen One” is SUMMERTIME (Good Deed Entertainment), directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada (Blindspotting, Raya and the Last Dragon), which is a pseudo-doc, pseudo-narrative that follows 27 Angelino poets in a typical day in Los Angeles. I’m not really a poetry or spoken word fan so much, but the way that these talented poets are showcased, each in their own compelling segment. While having some kind of interconnecting story might not have been necessary, it’s actually what keeps you invested as you go from one situation and style of poetry onto the next. You can tell that there are some real stars of the future in this that will likely appear elsewhere. There are just so many great numbers from Tyris Winter complaining abut the price of food at a restaurant, Mila Cuda expressing her sexuality on the bus to an obvious homophobe, a couple at a marriage counselor relaying their issues through song and rap, an amazing dance number, and so much more. My favorite running storyline was the one involving street rappers Anewbys (Bryce Banks) and Rah (Austin Antoine), who are trying to make it. The incidental music is great, and the performances are embellished with cinema verité style shots of L.A. that really helps enhance the mood and set the environment for the story being told. It’s hard to call Summertime a musical, but there’s so much great rhymes and music that it just has a great youthful energy that seems so perfect for this time of the year.
You can read my interview with Estrada over at Below the Line later today.
Streaming now on Disney+ is the first episode of the new Pixar series Monsters at Work, based on the characters from one of my favorite Pixar movies, Monsters Inc., with new episodes airing every Wednesday.
Tumblr media
Joshua (Cropsy) Zeman’s doc THE LONELIEST WHALE: THE SEARCH FOR 52 (Bleecker Street), exec. produced by Leonardo DiCaprio hits theaters on Friday and then will be on digital July 16. Oddly, it’s the second movie in the last month about whales. This one is about the search for the 52 Hertz Whale that was discovered in 1989 and has become a global sensation as it lives in solitude, emitting a different frequency from other whales and therefore unable to communicate.
I have to admit that I was quite cynical about this movie, mainly because it looked like it could potentially be boring, as we watch and listen to a bunch of oceanographers talking about whales, and I was mostly right. Zeman himself is not the most interesting subject or narrator for his own doc, so that doesn’t help much either. Essentially, the entire movie is this group of rag-tag oceanographers (as well as a musician who plays clarinet with the whales -- yeah, he should be thrown overboard first, I’m thinking) looking for this elusive whale that no one has seen since 1989. As you can imagine, it’s a fairly fruitless expedition that makes you miss the excitement of Ron Howard’s whale movie, but if you’re just watching this to see beautiful whales in their natural habitat, the movie does deliver. I’m sure the less cynical than myself will find more interesting aspects of the film to enjoy, and yes, this is a far superior film to the recent Fathom, but it also shares lots of potentially interesting facts about whales and their history, which doesn’t make it a complete loss.
I have to imagine that The Loneliest Whale should be appreciated as a fine nature doc if you’re into this sort of thing, but if you’re looking for something particularly groundbreaking or moving, you’ll have to search elsewhere.
Judd Ehrlich’s doc THE PRICE OF FREEDOM (Tribeca Studios) takes on the gun debate and how the National Rifle Association has divided the nation and cost countless lives along the way. The movie features the likes of President Bill Clinton, activist (and Parkland survivor) X Gonzalez, Senator Chris Murphy, Representatives Jason Crow and Lucy McBath, and many more on both sides of the gun debate.
Also opening on Friday in theaters and virtual cinema is the Tunisian horror film DACHRA (Dekanalog), written and directed by Abdelhamid Bouchnak, which follows three journalism students as they investigate a cold case which takes them deep into the woods.
Netflix launched its “Fear Street” franchise last week based on the book series by R.L. Stine, and this week, the second movie, FEAR STREET PART 2: 1978 (Netflix), debuts on the streamer. I’ve actually seen Fear Street Part 1: 1994, and it’s a fun little slasher set in the town of Shadyside, the “Killer Capitol of the USA.” I honestly had no idea these were Rated R, since I thought it was more of a young adult type thing, but it’s really straight-up Wes Craven Scream. I might have to check out some of these books, but the first movie was quite enjoyable even if they generally seem derivative of other slashers.
Also, Eytan Fox’s Sublet, which has been playing in select theaters will now be available to Watch At Home via Apple TV, Prime Video, Vudu, FandangoNOW, Google Play, YouTube and DIRECTV. Also, Ivan Kavanagh’s horror film, Son, will be on Shudder this Thursday so if you missed it in theaters and VOD, now’s your chance to see it, and you can read my interview with Mr. Kavanagh over at Below the Line.
Oh, and TONIGHT at the Metrograph, as part of their Live Screening Series, they’ll be showing Rashaad Ernesto Green’s Gun Hill Road (2011) as part of their FIrst Film Series with the Green Brothers, which will be followed next week by the first film from his brother, Reinaldo Marcus Green.
And that, my friends, is it for this week! Next week, we have SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY from Warner Bros., and that’s about it! (Well, there will be a lot more limited releases, as well a Emmy nominations, so back to the grind!)
