When was the last time YOU got tested?
Tumblr media
Today is National Transgender HIV Testing Day (NTHTD) - it's an annual observance through the CDC and other HIV-focused health organizations to spark conversations about the need for HIV testing and prevention. Like many marginalized populations, HIV disproportionally affects transgender individuals compared to the general population and has done so since the original 1980s AIDS epidemic.
It's 2024. HIV is completely treatable and preventable - as long as you have the knowledge and the tools.
Every single person should get tested for HIV at least once in their lives, even if they're not sexually active. In Illinois, once you turn 12 years old, you can get tested for HIV and prevention tools like PrEP and PEP entirely on your own without parental permission/consent.
Sexually active individuals should be tested for HIV at least once per year, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. HIV can and does affect everyone, so make it a part of your annual wellness routine and doctor's visit. There's a variety of ways to get tested for HIV - whether it's through an at-home test, at the doctor's office, or with an organization like us at Rainbow Cafe LGBTQ Center!
High-risk people, like individuals who frequently have unprotected sex or share injectable drugs/equipment, should get tested for HIV more often. The CDC recommends high-risk populations get tested every 3 to 6 months, depending on need. On the other hand, the CDC does not recommend anyone get tested more than 4 times a year unless...
You should get tested each and every time there's an emergency like you had unprotected sex, the condom broke, or you had to share drug equipment.
If you test negative, you have a couple of options to prevent getting HIV in the future. If you're someone who comes into contact with HIV somewhat regularly, like if you have engage in unprotected sex, have a partner living with HIV, or normally share injection drug equipment, you should consider PrEP - a daily pill that prevents HIV long-term. Alternatively, if you're someone who doesn't into contact with HIV very often and there's an emergency like a condom breaking, there's PEP, which prevents HIV transmission after exposure if taken quickly enough.
If you test positive, you'll be prescribed the necessary medications to ensure you will live a long, healthy life just like any of your other peers. It might seem scary since there still isn't a permanent cure for HIV, but living with HIV really means just taking your daily meds, doing some routine bloodwork with your doctor, and making sure to tell your future/current partners.

From the lack of care for community health, to the constant thread of eugenics, and disproportionate effect on people of color and queer people the similarities between the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the ongoing covid pandemic are eerie.

"The “Düsseldorf Patient”, a man now aged 53, is just the third person worldwide to have been completely cured of HIV via stem cell transplantation.
As in the case of the other two patients, the so-called “Berlin Patient” and “London Patient,” the transplantation was undertaken to treat an acute blood disease, which had developed in addition to the HIV infection.
The Düsseldorf Patient received a stem cell transplant used to treat leukemia in 2013 and has shown persistent suppression of HIV-1 ever since, including during the last 4 years after the patient stopped taking anti-retroviral medication.
“I still remember very well the sentence from my family doctor: ‘don’t take it so hard,'” the Düsseldorf Patient, who had leukemia as well as HIV-1, said in a statement. “‘We will experience together that HIV can be cured!’ At the time, I dismissed the statement.”
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a procedure used to treat certain cancers, such as leukemia, by transferring immature blood cells from a donor to repopulate the bone marrow of the recipient.
Scientists now understand that individuals with two copies of the Δ32 mutation in the gene for the HIV-1 co-receptor CCR5; are resistant to HIV-1 infection. The two previous cases of both the London patient and the Berlin patient involved receiving a stem cell transplant from a donor with these unique mutations.
Björn-Erik Jensen, a specialist in infectious diseases at Düsseldorf University Hospital, lead the treatment and subsequent research, revealed today in a peer-reviewed study in Nature.
The patient was diagnosed as having acute myeloid leukemia and proceeded to undergo transplantation of stem cells from a female donor in 2013, followed by chemotherapy and infusions of donor lymphocytes.
After the transplantation, anti-retroviral therapy was continued, but HIV was undetectable in the patient’s blood cells. Anti-retroviral therapy was suspended in November 2018 with the patient’s informed consent, almost 6 years after the stem cell transplantation, to determine whether the virus persisted in the patient.
“I very much hope that these doctors will now get even more attention for their work,” said the patient. “I have now decided to give up some of my private life to support research fundraising. And of course, it will also stay very important for me to fight the stigmatization of HIV with my story.”
The authors conclude that although HSCT remains a high-risk procedure that is at present an option only for some people living with both HIV-1 and hematological cancers, these results may inform future strategies for achieving long-term remission of HIV-1."

KISSING DOESN’T KILL: GREED AND INDIFFERENCE DO
“Gran Fury, a collective of artists and designers dedicated to promoting AIDS/HIV awareness, produced many inventive and thought-provoking posters. AIDS activists had used the strategy of the 'Kiss-In' - large public demonstrations of affection by gay and straight people - to undermine complacency and conservative commentators alike. This 1989 advertisement, designed for display on public transport in New York City and San Francisco, ridicules small-mindedness as well as reminding the authorities of their responsibilities in combating AIDS.”

I’ve been dancing in queer discos for five years now and I never actually thought about why they always put a lot of 80s’ songs, and then tonight it clicked: it’s about a certain queer generation, it’s about the AIDS crisis, it’s about gaining visibility and freedom, it’s about Thatcher and Reagan, it’s about decriminalisation, it’s about not forgetting anything even if life’s really different right now

I'm watching Todd in the Shadows' video on James, and I'm even more angry.
James seriously said that the hiv/aids epidemic of the late 20th century killed all the "cool" queers leaving only the boring gays who wanted "stupid stuff" like marriage equality and to join the military.
Is there a place to begin with this? This is evil on so many levels. James is fucking evil

Since 1988, World AIDS Day (1 December) has provided a platform to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, and to honor the lives affected by the epidemic. Take time to remember, reflect, and renew today--and everyday.

HELP MARK PATTON COVER HIS MEDICAL BILLS!!!
Tumblr media
(originally posted january 13th, 2023)
mark patton, an actor and lgbtq+ activist best known for playing jesse in a nightmare on elm street 2, has been hospitalized for complications relating to HIV/AIDS, and his agent has put up a gofundme to help raise the money to get patton to better hospital facilities.
anyone who’s familiar with the elm street movies or mark patton’s history can tell you that he’s had a very rough go of it; after being outed against his wishes in the aftermath of elm street 2’s release, his fledgling career was tanked, and he proceeded to lose many friends and loved ones throughout the AIDS crisis. patton himself contracted HIV and retired quietly to mexico in the late 90s, where he lived in obscurity until a critical and fan re-evaluation of elm street 2 took place in the mid 2010s.
patton has since re-emerged to the convention circuit, where he raises awareness for lgbtq+ people and for HIV/AIDS. he’s a very important queer horror icon, and one who’s very dear to me personally as well. i know i have a pretty decent following of horror fans, so i hope that if any of you have the money to spare, you’ll consider donating to him. even if you can’t, i hope that you’ll share this post!
full gofundme text/description, written by patton’s agent/manager peter valderrama:

[id: three screenshots of a gofundme description. it reads:
Hey guys! This Peter Valderrama, posting for Mark. I have urgent statements here from and about Mark Patton I appreciate if everyone reads carefully I know it is a bit long but it is a serious matter If you can help or share in anyway it is appreciated very much. As Mark Pattons manager, I've been asked on his behalf to help post this Information and get this statement to be seen!
As his fans know very well, Mark takes his events very seriously and values any opportunity to meet with them in person- especially after the last few years with covid seriously crippling those opportunities.,
Mark was truly looking forward to this show for quite some time but sadly his health has taken a drastic turn for the worse.
He has been ill for quite some time now- originally it was thought to be aftershocks of covid and some hefty infections that could potentially be tackled with care and rest. But now it is quite clearly AIDS related ailments that he is managing.
He has been quiet for his own privacy but with the cancellation of his events at the musicbox theater and horror house shop he has decided to release his news in the hopes that his community could help him.
Mark is currently in a Mexican hospital where they speak very little English- and they are completely overcome with covid cases there.. He needs to be transported to an American hospital down there where he can be receive more specialized care in a safer setting. For this, we humbly need to ask for help.
Mark himself has asked in a statement below that we share his current news and ask everyone in the horror community to please help with his fundraiser in any way that they can.
"Basically I am asking for help I will not be embarrassed…. I just want to be healthy and at home with family.
I need to move to American Hospital in Mexico where they can give me the treatment i desperately need.
The American Hospital is $300 dollars a day with nurses, doctors and meds. The Mexican hospital are overwhelmed with Covid and I am too compromised to remain here.
I feel very stupid for being overly optimistic. I thought I would be flying to Chicago today but I promise that when I am well enough to fly to USA I will.
I have faced these medical challenges before and I know I have a lot of fight left in me- but the last few years have been crippling for me financially. I have always lived Month to month and I have been struggling with medical visits since October.
If anyone is able to contribute it would mean a life saving option for me to be recovering in a place that can cater to my condition.
Thank you all
Love,
Mark"
