Isn't that... Literally what Post-canon does? It shows that they're not free from the Story- Narratively still bound to continuing a continuity, and still bearing the weight, the baggage, of all the bullshit they've gone through. Like, Post-canon has problems, but your description of a way to continue the story that makes sense... Is exactly how the story continued. No 'happy ending', but having to deal with their own problems and their messed up reality just as much as before, if not more.

ok 1) I haven't read postcanon so i have no idea what it does. the only bits of postcanon i touched were the snapchats when they got shared around tumblr, the fact that I played Pesterquest, and the first couple pages of Meat and Candy I read before they split and i was like 'actually f this'

(side note but the Meat and Candy story being like 'oh you want more of these characters?? do you want the RAW MEAT of a story that really DEALS with these problems, or do you want SUGAR SWEET fluffy nothingness that just makes you feel happy for a little time???' and half of us going 'uh neither we wanted the story to be over' and x'ing out is so meta appropriate and hilarious to me)

2) if postcanon does talk about them still being trapped in the story thats pretty freaking cool, but i didn't mean like... 'trapped' as in still effected by the things that happened in the story, i meant 'trapped' by the Narrative as an Entity

like, if a story ends with characters who have trauma to unpack and emotional baggage to deal with, thats good! most fantasy dramas do that. and we don't need to double the length of the story to address all these issues and go on new adventures until everyones Complete as people. a little bit of an epilogue that shows that the things character went through DID heavily effect them and that they're taking the time to heal is nice, but an entire multi-year story unpacking traumas and and dealing with baggage is frankly a bit much. when sequels do that it invalidates the catharsis of the original ending, and if your original ending has no catharsis it's not really an ending so much as another break between acts

the way Homestuck ended, with the kids walking through the door and Vriska consuming Lord English with the Juju, the way that got interpreted by me and most fans I know is that the kids were able to escape the story while Lord English got trapped within the story - thus, Lord English is 'already here' because there's nowhere else to go, whereas the kids are free and no longer here. it called back to the ending of Problem Sleuth, which was playing off the 'Escape the Room' video game genre, where the characters 'won' by finally leaving the building - the Homestuck characters 'won' by finally leaving the building too, and the building was Homestuck

(I also referenced the Truman Show in that original post - if you haven't seen that movie you really should, and also I'm spoiling it here, but it's about a man who's entire life has been fictionalized without his consent, and he works to try to escape the story he's trapped in. it ends with him finally confronting the person responsible for his story, and saying 'no, actually, i'd like to leave now' and he walks through the door and the movie is over. yeah he's got a ton of stuff to do next - therapy and hopefully a huge legal battle - but it's meta. he doesn't want to be in a story anymore, he makes the choice to leave it, and the story lets him leave. its over and done, and its SO cathartic. you don't need to explore all the nitty gritty to have a satisfying ending.)

in this interpretation the Homestuck Story is an entity to be escaped. and the existence of postcanon is a tongue-in-cheek way of expressing 'no, they didn't escape the Story. they won nothing at the end except for the creation of a new world'

and honestly? I don't think that's a terrible kind of story on its own to tell, I just don't see how its justified. to me it looks like Hussie (or whoever's doing most of the writing now) is just continuing on with the characters, exploring how they've changed and all that, with complete disregard for the fact that they escaped Homestuck and should no longer be trapped by a canon Story-As-Entity (the fact that it's even referred to as 'postcanon' reinforces this idea to me)

the only justification that makes sense is if we learn that the Juju didn't let them escape Homestuck. They're still trapped in the Story-As-Entity, without their consent and despite all their best efforts. In which case, what did the ending of Homestuck even do? did it trap Lord English in Homestuck 1 and release the kids into the new world of Homestuck 2, where they're still trapped? does the postcanon explore them trying to escape this or are they resigned to be stuck in a Story-As-Entity forever?

like I said, this could be an interesting kind of a story to tell, and if it's well justified somehow, and interesting enough to me personally, it might even be a story i'd read. but just from the outside, it looks like more of a 'we wrote a sequel because the original made us so much money/clout and we wanna keep milking it'. and without any further justification that just sees antithetical to the original Homestuck ending, which is why i've been almost completely ignoring the postcanon stuff

This is mostly just lore/alternian biosphere musings, feel free to skip while I shout into the Veil.

So this thought popped into my mind while thinking about Alternia’s rain. If the rain is literal acid that can melt a humanoid like us or MSPA, why isn’t the ocean just one big acid pool? MSPA gets melted by Alternia’s acid rain in one of Stelsa’s bad endings in Friendsim, but during Feferi’s route in Pesterquest, they’re fine being submerged in the ocean. Looks can be deceiving, but Charun’s river next to their cave looks fairly safe, save for any dangerous fauna.

Is the ocean just safer to swim in? Is it not saltwater like ours? I first thought that the saltwater was a base to neutralize the rain, but then I remembered that neutralizing acids with bases makes salt. So maybe it’s an acidic sea but not nearly as bad as the rain? Is is a base sea and the rain makes it salty? You’d figure MSPA trying to open their eyes in the sea to see Feferi would hurt like a bitch regardless, if it’s not the acid or high base of the sea burning, it would definitely be the salt.

I've been a Homestuck for this long (kickstarter veteran) and just didn't bother starting Hiveswap because I was like "I want it to be done so I'm not stuck in no ending limbo like the canon" lol

I actually contributed like $20 to the kickstarter in 2012 but that email was dead by the time Act 1 came out and I figured the game would be like a redo of the main story and was disappointed when I found out they were starting a "new" plot instead of "finishing" the first. Now idgaf I highly enjoyed the Friendsims I watched out of context and as a Sollux and Tavros stan it seems Xefros and Dammek will be right up my alley (and as a Meenah stan so will Trizza)

Anyway I managed to get through years of Reddit fandom with no concrete spoilers I can recall. I'm lmao at the beginning rn at the remnants of B1 Jake being a fucking disaster, like their mom was so beautiful why is he like this

Timeline thoughts (transcription under cut)

[/Begin ID: A series of screenshots of discord messages from user 'gayve strider dick rider'. The first one reads "Okay okay okay so. O just had. A thought. And yeah this probably isn't supported by canon at all but yk what? fuck canon I love this idea. So. Doomed timelines. They're any deviation from the alpha timeline (aka any series of events that doesnt result in lord English's creation) and they usually get destroyed to preserve alpha. *But* - afaik, *we don't have any evidence that doomed timelines actually get destroyed*. The only one we see is davesprites, and they just *say* its falling apart iirc. The whole thing only breaks after Dave leaves, and rose dreams her consciousness away or some shit im gonna be real I didn't understand it - aka after the two remaining players leave. What if the doomed tkmelines don't *actually* get destroyed as long as there's one active player out there, they just kinda. Keep going? Maybe a doomed timeline is just any timeline where you cant win sburb, even if you do everything correctly, because you were *doomed* by your deviation from alpha. Again there's probably a shit ton contradicting this in canon but fuck canon. And speaking of 'fuck canon' - the epilogues. Yeah yeah I know fuck the epilogues ***but***. What if the epilogues are *also* doomed timelines? Or at least the timeline where they never defeat lord English. Beating lord English and trapping him in lil cal as part of his masterpiece is a pretty fucking important part of his (and by extension, the alpha) timeline, right? Wouldn't any timeline that deviates from this (cough cough candy cough cough) be, by extension, doomed?'

The next message reads 'Maybe that's why the world seems so fake and everything's going to shit in the epilogues - instead of the doomed/candy timeline being sectioned off from alpha/meat, it's instead weirdly linked thanks to ult dirk and ult calliope, which is why both tomelines are kinda fucked (and also combining iirc?)'

The third message is replying to a previous message beginning 'What if the doomed tkmelines don't actually get destroyed as long as there's one active player out...' and reads 'ALSO - in hiveswap friendsim. [In spoilered text] specifically marvus' route. Iirc MSPA reader is trying to stay with Marvus and pause the timeline - aka *deviating from the alpha timeline*. That one ending is doomed, which is why the narrative itself is constantly trying to kill MSPA reader so they can get back to alpha. [End spoilered text]

What if doomed timelines are inherently more deadly than alpha? By killing off all remaining players that could ensure the timeline can be destroyed, like they're said to be in canon. Theres more here but I'm too dumb to think of it right now ( < just woke up)'

The last message is replying to a previous message reading 'Maybe that's why the world seems so fake and everything's going to shit in the epilogues - instead of the...' and reads 'Wait yeah I figured out what o was going for here - candy as a doomed timeline intrinsically linked to meat basically infects meat with the whole 'everything is wrong and the place is falling apart' thing, and meat as the alpha timeline intrinsically linked to candy sustaining candy and ensuring it doesn't kill off its players and disappear like a regular doomed timeline

The two being sustained by ult dirk and calliope, two characters who transcend timelines and, although they each focus on their own particular timeline (dirk with meat, calliope with candy) they do occasionally interfere in the other, ensuring the two stay linked. And the two being so linked they combine (at least on a narrative/meta aspect) into one in HS^2, which is. Such a shit fight.' /End ID]
