Okay okay, so I had to draw this even though in HKU it’s not officially Mallory’s birthday. It is irl and I’ve decided to celebrate it. To the folks who are, totally and utterly confused by this, please go and read @hyrule-kingdom-updates it’s a phenomenal blog, I’ve met so many wonderful people because of it (love ya ratbox /platonically), and the characterization? Chef’s kiss.

Now, to talk about this piece because I really want to, it was done in basically an entire afternoon, so about 4-6 hours. I used brown micron pens, ohuhu markers, crayola coloured pencils and some gel pens. I specifically referenced the image of Zelda from the BOTW dlc promotion art, and you bet that everything here has some sort of reference/symbolism to either the game or HKU.

Misko rested his chin in both his hands and gave a deep, romantic sigh. 

“Ah…A tale of hope despite suffering…of finding oneself amidst a cacophony of conflicting morality and control chaoses!” He titled his head with a quiet smile, as if dreaming of it in his head. “Yes…That is a worthwhile treasure to behold…”

He suddenly snatched a journal from his back pocket, the trinkets and knick-knacks on his belt jangling. Misko took a pen and started scratching seemingly miscellaneous words away.

“Hmm…yes, yes…What was that you were saying? ‘A plot twist of kindness?’ An identity embedded in an ideal of inching away from indifference…Hm. Now see I don’t know if the syllables for that work in…” He continued muttering away.

Zavis gripped the grass awkwardly, dirt under his nails, wondering whether it would be wise to get up and bolt for it. Looking around, there didn’t seem to be any other traps or warriors looking to make an ambush. 

Misko’s under-the-breath contemplation and paper scratching continued to fill in the silence. Zavis coughed, and still, no movement other than the pen came from it. 

“‘...And a confidence in will so strong that it just may challenge the world!’ Oho! Yes, that’s incredible… Now, how one specifically arrives at such a turning point in character remains to be—”

“Did. You.” Zavis interjected, moving the plushie under Misko’s nose, “Want. The rat?” 

The thief looked up, annoyed for a second, before his expression morphed into enthusiastic joy.

“Ahaha! How rude of me not to—Oh, no, dear Asu.” He shook his head, the beads in their hair seemed to giggle and laugh along with him. “I already have what I want from you.”

Zavis nodded his head and let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. 

“Right. I kinda figured out that was your whole deal…with the cape and all.”

Misko suddenly looked up from his writing. A raised eyebrow enticed both curiosity and danger.

“Oh? Now what is my whole deal then, dear Yiga?”

Zavis gulped, suddenly unsure of his conclusions. But given that he was no longer staring death upside down, and had yet to be impaled by a sword through the few moments of vulnerable silence between them a second ago, he decided to take his chances.

“Well…You wear a purple cloak like The Wonder Taker, the boy thief in a Zora play. You share the same trickster vibes and pointed rapier as the character, along with the same…voice—?”

“Diction? Parlance? Articulation?”

“...word choice. Similar word choice as the character.”

Misko gave a grumpy frown and rubbed his chin. “Well now. That seems like a stretch to assume I’m some plagiarist of some Zora playwright's works, now doesn’t it?”

Zavis shrugged. “In the play, after the thief steals all that he can ever desire, he instead forces people to tell their stories. Their deepest desires and hopes, so that he might be able to have some too.”

Thanks mom. Zavis gave a mental message to whatever god cared. Guess it pays in more than one way to be the son of the head of Royal Music and Art affairs...

“Hmph.” The thief dusted off his gloves in indifference. “Sounds like some generic narrative theme that is broad enough to be applied to many a situation!”

“I see that your journal says ‘Nori’s Taken Wonders,’ and that you’ve scratched off the original title of  ‘The Wonder— ”

Quick as thunder’s thoughts, Nori snapped the journal closed in one hand, and narrowed his eyes at Zavis. 

“...It’s not nice to jest a man for his hobbies.”

“Counterpoint. You have an egg I need, it would be nice to have it back.”

Nori ground his teeth. “Maybe I should take your rat…” 

Zavis sucked in a little breath and looked down at his tiny friend. He took in its handcrafted blemishes for another moment, the felt feel in his hands, before holding it back up. 

“Well…The Wonder Taker always did take a token, to remember all the stories by…”

Misko snatched the rat in one gloved hand, making Zavis flinch. He turned it over, inspecting it as if appraising its value, before casting a harrowing glance at Zavis. 

He then burst into laughter before chucking it right back at him.

“Ahaha! Your dirty little ragged doll—”

“Hey!”

“—has no use to me, as I, unlike any fickle fictional character, have an excellent memory! Why, I will remember things from centuries ago if given the chance!”

He turned back to his journal. “And besides. You obviously will appreciate that thing more than I ever will, and I’m not here to cause more misery, just take it. So why don’t you take this as a chance to leave me to my devices and dilly-dally somewhere else...”

Misko used a free hand to remove the satchel from his shoulder, and tossed the contents—both Sheikah Slate and egg—letting them spill across the grass.

“I’m a creature of my word.”

And that's when a dagger flew and hit the dirt

So, the Rat Box on the HKU Masterlist said something about beating ??? into a box with a broom, and my brain took that and ran with it. I don’t know why ??? looks like that, I just drew ??? like that. He was supposed to vaguely resemble that thing that swirls around Hyrule Castle after activating the tower in botw. Also, my first time drawing either of the Hartell Bros, so please forgive me if either of them look off.

Terrako/Harbinger Siv

(HEAVY HKU & HWAOC SPOILERS!)

Siv is going to die in HKU.

Well, maybe not. Or maybe he will. Quill hasn’t exactly been clear with us. But there’s a bit of evidence stacked towards him dying (and in a very specific way, too— but we’ll get to that). Specifically this quote from the “Hearts and Minds and Livers” arc.

[Siv:] I... got this gut feeling...

[Launo:] Oh that’s compelling...

[Siv:] LISTEN. Now’s not the time to sass me, Birch! I feel like, well. I have a very strong suspicion that within the week I am going to die.

[Launo:] EXCUSE ME?!

[Siv:] And... it’s very hard to explain, but I’m quite certain that certain series of events are going to transpire that could maybe possibly harm myself, in the coming week.

This is a very specific piece of foreshadowing that I don’t see Quill putting in without reason. It feels less like a “gut feeling” and more like an omen. As of the current arc, it is still “this week.” Zelda’s birthday is still soon, and the Calamity is presumably going to strike VERY soon. If we trust Siv’s gut and assume that he truly IS going to die, then that begs the question: how will he die?

I’d like to take a moment to point out the very clear parallels between Siv and Terrako in the story so far. Because, if you think about it, Siv and Terrako have a lot more in common than meets the eye. In HKU, Siv has been repeatedly referred to as the calamity’s “vessel.” In Age of Calmity, Harbinger Ganon was the Calamity using Terrako as a vessel, possessing it and controlling its every move, using it to carry out his own deeds. In this timeline, Ganon has not latched onto Terrako, but Siv. The Calamity is using him as a vessel just like Terrako in AoC.

But it really makes you wonder if Siv’s similarities to Terrako don’t run deeper. If it’s even more intentional than it lets on. If perhaps, because of this, Siv will eventually share the same fate as Terrako.

Terrako (the good one)’s fate in Age of Calamity was to be possessed by Ganon, subsequently defeated by Link, before sacrificing himself for Zelda while on his last limbs. It’s, unfortunately, very easy to imagine Siv in this exact same scenario. We know Siv has quite a few people that he cares deeply about— no matter how much he denies it or spits insults at them, no matter how much they betray his trust, deep down, he still loves them. These people in particular being Larc & his family, Zavis, and Zelda.

In a hypothetical future, Siv might have snapped out of Ganon’s control long enough to realize that the people he loves are in serious danger... and he has the power to save them. He might decide to sacrifice himself to keep the people he cares about safe. The possibilities surrounding this scenario are endless, but the situation itself isn’t too hard to believe. The action wouldn’t at all be expected from him right now, not in his current state, but him making this choice as his final act could be a very plausible destination for his character development— for once choosing to put his loved ones above himself.

It’s not too hard to imagine. Especially when you consider the following evidence:

1. One of Quill’s OOC posts a long time ago in response to an ask was this:

Larc is sacrificing the greater good for his kids

Rhoam is sacrificing his kids for the greater good

Ligero is sacrificing his kids for himself

Siv is.......

...Hm.

I wonder what pattern, if any, will go from there.

Quill was obviously hinting at something, and even as far into the story as we are now, we still don’t know what Quill was talking about. But wouldn’t it be very fitting for the sentence to come after this to be “Siv is sacrificing himself for [the greater good or his kids]?”

2. Larc’s whole thing in “Sibling Fights, Hollow Knights, and Destiny Rewrites” was that he ended up intentionally hurting himself in order to prevent himself from hurting others. I could see this being used as either foreshadowing or a direct parallel to what Siv might do in the future. Again, it’s a very possible line of character development for Siv.

3. Two images tagged “???,” when brightened, showed to have a LOT of text in it, all of which have either appeared in actual HKU dialogue since the images were posted, or presumably will show up soon. This line in particular stood out to me, though:

Please! He didn’t do anything. My family didn’t do anything. It was all me.

Now, of course, we don’t know who’s speaking this. But, if we choose to assume that it’s Siv speaking, that would line up very well with the idea of him choosing to put his loved ones before himself, perhaps standing in someone’s path and preventing them from hurting his family...

Again, it’s entirely possible that this could be anyone else speaking. There’s a lot of other people it could be. But if it is Siv, then that would make a lot of sense with everything else I’ve mentioned.

4. This one is much more recent— a quote from Link’s Declaration during “Like the Eggs and Men Before Her”:

And if I’m wrong, well. Have my life then. But even then, I think we would rather die living as ourselves, and not vessels of someone else’s will.

There’s the word “vessel” popping up again... this line really feels like foreshadowing. Considering Siv is one of the few other characters associated with being a vessel... maybe he would rather die as himself than as a vessel of Ganon’s will, in the end.

So, there you have it. There’s a lot of evidence pointing towards the theory that Siv is going to sacrifice himself in the end in order to save the people he loves. He might get possessed entirely by Ganon, causing the others to have to fight him in order to free him just like Terrako in AOC— or maybe something else will happen. The possibilities are endless when you think about all the parallels, but, unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?), the possibility of Siv sacrificing himself seems pretty likely.

There might be more evidence that I’ve missed— feel free to mention it if you know of something! A lot of credit goes to everybody on the HKU Discord for bouncing around ideas for this theory! I’m not the only one with this theory, I just wrote everything I had in my own personal notes into an essay for fun.

Picrews are linked in the character names, I wanted to get these characters up quickly so I made picrews instead of drawing them :)

Andeas "Andy" - The babey boy himself!! He's like twelve and has been a big fan of Siv's for a while. He has to go under the radar about it, though, since his parents don't approve. Something about crude drawings and foul language? Andy pulled a Zavis and stole a bit of paper from the community board thing so he could keep up, and hid it in his treehouse. He acquired a love of rats and has some rat friends, too! His best friend is a rat named Lady Ratilda. He recently ran away from his Mabe Village home because he got worried about Siv and figured that something was up with the Malice. When he said his emotional goodbyes to his rat friends, Lady Ratilda wouldn't leave his shoulder so he just took her with him. Andy has no idea that he's going in completely the wrong direction and earnestly hopes to help Siv out. OH also he has a little fake Quill of Roost that he painted himself :)

Ellery "Elle" "Ellie" - Ellie is a quiet but caring woman. She and her wife Sabra are traveling merchants who were on their way back to their secluded home in Faron when they met Andy. Elle nearly had a heart attack seeing this kid out on his own, especially after hearing the recent news. He was looking for Asivus Hartell?? Assivus Asunder?? The Wing Clipper?? What????? So she pulls Sabra aside and is like "UHM WHAT DO WE DO" and Sabra's like "dw babe I got a plan" (also I really want to make her related to Launo in some way bc he's my favorite rn and also ✨conflict✨ dsklav but at the same time I don't know if Quill has Plans so,,,,,)

Sabra - Sabra is a Gerudo, born to a Gerudo mother and a Sheikah father. She was raised in a mixture of both cultures. Her mother took heritage on both sides rather seriously and made sure to continue teaching her about Sheikah culture when her father was killed by the Yiga clan. Eventually, Sabra became a merchant--traveling was something her family did a lot, and she enjoyed it so why not?--and met Ellie on the road. She happens to be a fan of the updates, though she's started having second thoughts after recent events... also unfortunately she doesn't wear sunglasses in canon I just thought they looked cool 😔

So yeah!! Basically these three met while traveling and Sabra and Elle were like "hey what the fuck that's a child" and Andy was like "HEY HI HELLO I'M GONNA HELP MISTER SIV" and now the three of them are on their way to Faron because Sabra convinced Andy that Siv was actually trying to throw everyone off by telling them that he was at the Bottomless Swamp
