Today's Bat: Bumblebee Bat

Environmental Impact: The Bumblebee Bat (aka the Kitti's Hog-Nosed Bat) is small in everything it does. It has a small range, roosting mostly in the Bilauktaung Mountain's limestone caves and hunting in its bamboo forests. They hover to capture insects in flight, and remain in a solitary, torpor-like state the rest of the time to conserve energy. The world's smallest mammals also have one of the world's smallest environmental impacts: their low population size means they have little impact on insect populations. They are on the IUCN Redlist as near-threatened.

Beauty: While the first thing that hits you about a Bumblebee Bat is their size, don't let this stop you from admiring their other amazing qualities. They have lovely, wideset nostrils. Their short, pointed ears and large wing-t0-body ratio create a unique silhouette. Power: You can't expect an amazing power score from a creature that weighs two grams. The most interesting thing I found about these guys is that their two distinct populations, Myanmar and Thailand, have distinct calls, with the Thai population using higher-frequencies. Overall: This is another species that's tied to Merlin Tuttle in my mind, as he recalls his adventures in trying to capture photographs of them (like the one above) in his book, The Secret Lives of Bats. He mentions how fear has driven human populations to kill roosting Bumblebee bats (and many other species) despite their largely harmless natures, which was a major factor in what lead me to creating this blog. Thank you for helping me continue to spread love and acceptance of these tiny friends!

Cool Facts- Also called the bumblebee bat, the Kitti’s hog-nosed bat is the smallest species of bat and the smallest mammal. They live in small colonies in even smaller caves where they sleep during the day and hunt at dawn and dusk. Surprisingly, these bats are only active for about an hour a day and only fly within a kilometer of their home cave. Even a slight breeze or rain can end a hunt early. Despite living in colonies of 100 bats, they like their space and tend to not roost near each other when sleeping.

It’s a hummingbird! it’s a bumblebee! Nope, it’s actually a  Kitti’s hog-nosed bat. Just take a good look at it: it’s a bat. A teensy, weensy, teeny tiny bat.

The world’s smallest bat (and debatably the world’s smallest mammal) is Informally known as the bumblebee bat because it is about the size of a large bumblebee (it weighs in at just two grams — about the weight of two Skittles). 

This incredibly tiny creature (even smaller than the average thumb) can be found in only two countries - Thailand and Myanmar. Unfortunately, unless great care is taken, this cute little creature may soon become endangered.

Bumblebee Bats/Kitti's Hog-Nosed Bats/Craseonycteris thonglongyais are the world's smallest mammal. Yeah, there's a shrew that might be a tad smaller by dimensions depending on the specimens you are comparing but, listen, Bumblebee Bats are definitely the smallest by weight and also most of the time by size so we're going with the bats for that award title. THEY WEIGH AS MUCH AS A DIME!!!!!!!!!!! INSANE!!!!!! (Official dimensions put the little lads at  29 to 33 mm (1.1 to 1.3 in) in length and 2 g (0.071 oz) in mass.)

Now a lot of people out there will post pictures of bat dolls and claim they're Bumblebee Bats so it's hard to find accurate pictures of them online but here is one to show you HOW INSANELY FREAKING SMALL THEY ARE. LOOK AT THIS PICTURE. LOOK AT YOUR OWN HAND. IMAGINE.

(p.s. handling your imaginary bat barehanded is fine but real bats should be handled with gloves)

Anyway, this bat is native to Thailand and consumes insects and spiders using their handy-dandy super flying skills. Like most bats, they're highly acrobatic. Being this small, they might be mistaken for an insect flying through the night sky which is super convenient if you eat insects because you blend right in. Sneaky.

As you can see in the photo above, these bats have kind of a snubby nose which is why they are more formally known as Kitti's Hog-Nosed Bat. The "Kitti" part of their name and the "thonglongyais" part of their scientific name come from the man who discovered them in 1973, Kitti Thonglongya, a Thai biologist.

As of right now, it is estimated that only about 4,000 individual Bumblebee Bats in the wild which has earned them the title of "Near Threatened" on the IUCN list BUT this bat is facing fast habitat loss due to development and human disturbance so "Near Threatened" is very bad indeed. A lot of biologists insist that this species is facing extinction.

ANYWAY happier quick facts:

They're wings are shaped in a such a way that suggests an ability to hover during flight which is RAD.

They only hunt for 30 minutes at the beginning of the night and 20 minutes right before morning.

The females have 1 baby a year and usually carried the kiddos to work with them and kiddo has to hang on to momma via a vestigial (non-functioning) nipple in her pubic area. Whack.

They hunt near cassava plants are vital to pest control.

There’s been a lot of misconception and mislabelled images around the internet in regards to kitti’s hog-nosed bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai, also known as the bumblebee bat; the smallest mammal in the world) and I figured I’d help educate and hopefully fix the algorithm a little by providing some actual images of them for you all to enjoy. They are just the cutest 💕

Below the break is some nerdier stuff about identification if that’s what you’re into!

This little fellow is an infant vesper bat (Vespertillionidae). Vesper bats are the most widespread family in Chiroptera and likely the ones you see outside your window every night! The sparse fur on this little fella is a pretty good indicator of a baby bat (do note, however, that Chiroptera is a very diverse order and there are quite a few exceptions to this), and pairing that with its protruding nostrils as opposed to the flat nose of a Kitti’s gives it away. Here are some more images of baby vesper bats.

Very adorable and very tiny regardless!

Kitti’s hog-nosed bat is the sole species in the family Craseonycteridae. They’re found only in southeast Asia. Because of this, they’re pretty unique bats. Their most distinctive trait is definitely their hog noses (flat with forward-facing nostrils, no leaf!), giving their heads an almost rectangular appearance. Additionally, they do not have tails; just the membrane. Lastly, unlike the majority of vesper bats, their ears are pointy! This is something harder to see in some images ‘cause bats love to wriggle and bend their ears but it’s something to consider.

Duke is a much smaller Duke one day, he's lost all his memories beyond the young age he is now and he's scared and confused. He doesn't know where is. But then there's Tim, his Robin! And suddenly everything is

The bats have no idea what's going on, but Duke refuses to go to anyone but Tim. He's also a little ball of energy bouncing off all the walls, and Tim is SO tired. "Robin- Tim, come play tag with me!"

One night Tim ends up passing out at his desk, a sleeping Duke cuddling into him on his lap.

Except when Duke wakes up Tim is small too. And he doesn't remember who Duke is!!

So Duke reintroduces himself and Tim let's himself be dragged downstairs to the actually Batcave!

Bruce is looking at them in absolute astonishment, they're so small!!

Damian laughs at Tim's smallness and Tim gives a cold glare. Maybe age can't change some things.

"where are Nightwing and the new Robin?" Tim asks.

"I'm Robin."

"no, I meant Jason!" Tim huffs and crosses his arms. Ah, he's so young he still believes Jay is Robin.

Duke is still clinging to him, but Tim can't bring himself to mind all too much.

Bruce doesn't know how to handle these boys, between a hyperactive Duke and an absolute menace Tim.

Dick tries to help, but even he can't keep up with the mischief and shenanigans they get up to together.

"dick pick us up!"

"yeah! Pick us up pick us up! And swing us around until we get dizzy!"

"again!"

"again!"

It's time to bring out the big guns, and by that they mean calling Jason over to the manor.

Tim settles immediately, but Duke remains overly weary around the large man with guns strapped to his thighs. He's kinda scary.

But Tim likes Jason well enough. At some point he ends up cuddled up with Jason who's stretched out on the couch, and Duke is just a little bit jealous.

"hey stop hogging him! Tim is mine," Duke pouts.

Jason raises an eyebrow at the boy, and Tim tilts his head. "You know there's enough room for both of us up here, right? Jason is a lot bigger than he used to be."

Duke considers this. "Mm okay, but only because you're up there". And he climbs up into Jason's lap to cuddle into Tim's side.

It's calm for a moment, until Duke starts to fidget, not able to stay still for too long. Jason let's put an annoyed noise and looks at them over the top of his book. "Would you quit it I'm tryna read here".

"what are you reading?" Duke asks.

"Macbeth."

Tim scrunched his nose up. "Why are you reading that?"

"I like it. Reminds me of school", and Tim catches something in his tone that Duke absolutely doesn't.

"it sounds silly. Will you red it to us?"

Jason looks at the both of them for a very long moment before signing. "Sure, but you've gotta stay still, your knees are already in my ribs."

The three of them all end up falling asleep like that, tucked into the lounge and curled up together.

Except when they wake up in the morning, Jason is scrawny little boy, even smaller than Tim and Duke.

Tim explains what he can to the tiny Jason as Duke sneaks some snacks from the kitchen cupboard for them.

Cass catches them stuffing their faces with junk food and squeals. "Three baby brother's now!" And scoops them all up as the quick and try to squirm away.

"gotta tell B"

"wait who are you exactly?" Jason asks.

"big sister", Cass smiles and pets his curls.

"no way! Really? I've never had a big sister before", he exclaims.

Cass carries all three of them down to the Batcave because she's so strong and cool! And Jason can't believe he ends up with such a cool sister.

"Batman!!!" Jason shouts in pure excitement, and Bruce turns around and almost cries.

Because look how small!! Oh baby Jay lad!! So precious and smol!

"I think the de-aging syndrome may be contagious", Tim speaks up. "You should have us all properly quarantined until you can find a cure."

quarantine is fun, for Jason and Tim at least (tiny Tim is plotting revenge on whoever caused this, Jason is reading and occasionally shouting at the characters). Duke can't stand having to stay still in the same one room for so long.

Jon,what is your pure dark type pokémon ideas this is not being fox,dogs our cats?

A common animal they haven't done yet is a proper porcupine and I think dark would be a fine type for it. They could make it look like it has a punk hairdo or something. We're also overdue for a dark type snake of some kind. Maybe it could be a hog nosed snake? They're nonvenomous, so it wouldn't have to also be poison type or anything, but they PRETEND to be more dangerous, they have the convergently evolved "cobra hood" to appear more intimidating, and they can play dead, so they are sneaky trickster snakes! I think there should also be a dark type flightless bat.

"After Man" is actually more popular in Japan than it probably is anywhere else, it even has a museum exhibit there!

I would like to offer this resource for therians, an extensive list of all of Sir David Attenborough’s nature documentaries that are available on soap2day, and a full list of what species* they each (notably, prominently) feature the natural behaviors of, separated by episode, and omitting species that were only shown dead, juvenile or being predated on. This took me a while (I have been working on it since Prehistoric Planet’s release) because I did in fact have to watch every single series in full in order to list all the species and the episodes are around 50 minutes long, but enjoy.
