だけ vs しか

ちゅーす！今日もがんばろうね！

today, i want to talk about the two different ways of saying only in japanese!

だけ

だけ means only in a positive sense. when using だけ the positve form is used.

レモンケーキだけ食べました。

I only ate the lemon cake.

しか

しか means only (derogatory) only but in a negative sense. it can also be used to express insufficiencey. when using しか the negative form is used.

レモンケーキしか食べませんでした。

I ate nothing but the lemon cake.

see how the nuance is different? it’s ever so slight but they have different connotations despite having virtually the same meanings?

if you’re struggling to see the difference, it might help if you search for example sentences using Jisho or Weblio.

however,, だけ can also be used with the negative form to mean not only

レモンケーキだけではありません。

There’s not only lemon cake. (i.e. there’s other cakes too).

しか can also be used in a positive way, but the negative form is still used

うちからケーキ屋まで２分しかかかりません。

It only takes 2 minutes from my house to the cake shop.

in this above example, the emphasis is that the cake shop is so close to my house that it hardly takes any time to get there. i wish that were true :(

it might take a while to wrap your head around, so i recommend practicing using the two until you’re used to them! to help you practice, you can try writing a sentence or two using だけ and/or しか in the replies!

expressing frequency in Japanese (+exercise)

ever needed to express how often you do something? you’re in luck, because here’s the vocab to express just that.

ボキャブラリー

now that you’ve learnt the words, let’s see it in context!

these words will often come up in questionnaires (アンケート）so what better way to put what you’ve learnt into practice than with a health questionnaire!

また久しぶりだね、ごめんね！

i started playing acnh in japanese! it's great fun and i feel like it's helping to improve my reading speed and get used to sentence structure, even if some of the sentence endings are really weird...

if you're looking for a different way to practice your language skills, you should give playing in your target language a try!

about this picture, i'd like to try a new challenge i found! maybe i'll actually get to the end of this one...

そういえば、今日大きな雹 (ひょう、hail*) が降った！スゲーだったけど、ちょっと煩かった。

曲があるかな。前回 「雨」 を言ったので、今回 「Rainy Day」 という曲はいいと思う。

「将来について全然わかんない！」 と 「え？俺は早すぎて大人になったけど、本当にわかんない！」 という気持ちの曲だよ。「青春時代は大変！」 のテーマだね。BTS の 「花樣年華」 時代より幸せだけど…

俺、アニソンが大好きそうだね… アニソンとK-Popだけを聞く… まぁ、いいかな。

では、これで、雨の話が終わった！そして、日本語の授業のタイムだ！

*ineterestingly there are two words for hail, 雹 (ひょう) and 霰 (あられ). the distinction between the two is the diameter of the hailstones,

if the hailstone is 5mm or smaller, you use 霰 (あられ)

if the hailstone is bigger than 5mm, you use 雹 (ひょう)

not sure whose first thought upon seeing hail is to measure it but there you go.

below is a image showing the differences from this website that explains how hail is formed and how the weight affects the speed ... apparently 70mm hailstone can travel at 140km... thats kinda terrifying...

beginner to intermediate level textbook for Japanese

i think i mentioned it before but i wanted to introduce the textbooks i use to learn japanese. i haven’t really tried many others (i really disliked japanese for busy people, and read and write japanese scripts was a joke but ye) so i don’t know much about any other textbooks.

so yea, i was hoping to introduce a relatively lesser known textbook for those who are looking for a place to start or aren’t able to find a textbook they vibe with.

without further ado, let’s begin!

イントロ

so which textbook do you recommend?

why, the Daichi Elementary Japanese textbooks of course! known as  日本語初級 大地 （にほんごしょきゅうだいち）in good old 日本語。

Daichi 1 starts from the very beginning and leads up to くれる、もらう and あげる。Daichi 2 then picks up from this and continues to teach more complex and commonly used grammar, ending with everyone’s favourite humble expressions （謙譲語・けんじょうご）

another great thing about this textbook is that it teaches the plain forms alongside the formal forms. a lot of people struggle with plain form and not many textbooks seem to cover it, so having something like this is a great way to improve your informal Japanese! which is crucial if you plan on going to Japan and speaking with locals around your age. always using formal form around your friends can make things awkward so make sure to study plain form well! (the plain form also makes up the basis of some more complex sentence structures so don’t underestimate it’s importance!)

as the textbook covers almost everything you could need to know while starting out your grammar endeavor, i would recommend Daichi to both beginners and those who are self studying on and off.

the two textbooks combined cover grammar and vocab from N5 and some of N4 but as they’re not specifically structured for passing JLPT so you’ll have to check the exact topics if you’re planning on taking the test.

教科書について

i use the Main Text (メインテキスト）and the Translation and Grammar Notes (文型説明と翻訳・ぶんけいせつめいとほんやく) books.

the main text contains lots of exercises as well as the grammar notes in Japanese. it also comes with a CD which has listening exercises for each section. at the back of the first textbook there’s summary tables for things like counters and dates which are super useful!

of course, if you don’t know Japanese this textbook is kinda useless on it’s own. but don’t worry, that’s where the translation book comes in!

the translation book has a list of vocab for each topic followed by a few pages of grammar explanations. after this there is usually a page of cultural information which is great for learning new vocab in context.

if english isn’t your first language or your strong suit, the translation book comes in various other languages such as Chinese, Korean and even Vietnamese.

if you want even more practice, there is also a workbook, a kanji practice book and a listening exercises book. if you’re self studying, these will most likely be super helpful when you want to test your understanding.

using these books together, your Japanese will be 上手 in no time!

なぜだろう？

honestly, i really like the style of these textbooks and the grammar notes are super easy to understand. and the layout is kinda satisfying? i don’t feel depressed while looking at it at least which is a major plus. 

i’m really picky when it comes to art style so finding a textbook who's style i vibe with was perhaps the most important? so i'm glad the style of daichi is quite soothing? and the characters are kinda interesting too

どこで買えますか？

you can find these two textbooks on amazon and various textbook suppliers around the world! you can also import them from japan but that might be more expensive so be sure to shop around.

if you’re tight on money or you want to see it before you buy it, you might be able to borrow it from your local university/japanese embassy/cultural house library so be sure to ask!

記憶と思い出の違い！(differences between 記憶と思い出)

こんはよう～！

みんなは色々な国で住んでいるので、「こんにちは」、「こんばんは」 と 「おはよう」 のかばん語だよ！

今日の Langblr Word of the Day Challengeの言葉はMemoryだ。

また難しい言葉かよ！

日本語で 「Memory」 は 「記憶」 だけど、「思い出」 という言葉もある。

まず、この二つの言葉の違いについて話しましょう！その後で、曲をリンクする！

記憶（記憶）

概して言えば、記憶は全ての 「Memories」 という意味だ。

例えば、ケーキのレシピを覚えるかな？その覚えるレシピは記憶だ。

キーポイントは 「実体験」

Generally speaking, all memories are 「記憶」.

For example, if you remember the recipe of a cake, the memory of that recipe is 記憶.

The key point is practical experience.

思い出（おもいで）

思い出は記憶だけど、その時の感情を伴っている。

ケーキのレシピ、だれから習った？もし、子供の時、両親と一緒にそのケーキを作ったとか、友達の誕生日にそのケーキを作ったとか、この記憶は思い出だ。

思い出 are a part of 記憶, but the feeling's from that time accompany the memory.

For example, who taught you the cake recipe from earlier? If you used to make it together with your parents as a child, or if you made it for your friend's birthday, those sorts of memories are 思い出.

まとめ

大切の違いことは 「感情」

感情を伴う記憶は思い出だ。

感情を伴わない記憶は記憶だ。

The crucial difference is the presence of emotions.

If there are feelings related to the memory, use 思い出。

If there are no feelings associated with the memory, use 記憶。

記憶のテーマはしばしばゲームで現れるね。記憶は大切とか、アムネジアの困難とか、面白いテーマだと思う。

*about 芸術家、it means artist in the loose sense rather than just painting. so musicians, carvers and actors although it might be better to use a word that is more specific to your career to avoid confusion.

俺、まだ考えて中だけど、会社などでぜったい働きたくない！毎日同じ仕事．．．怖いよ！実は作家になりたいけど、書くのはたいへん。

今日、新しいチャレンジを始めたいと思う。日本語の練習のために、本のチャレンジだぜ！

so, i found this interesting book challenge by @bea-estudiando and thought i'd give it a try!

さー、始めよう！

1. What’s the first book you remember reading (that you actually enjoyed)?

１．始めて読んだ本は何ですか?

はい、これ！

「Snow Spider Trilogy」 だ。たぶん。

子供の時、おれ本が大好きだった。でも、実は、この本の前 「Northern Lights」 を読んだけど、長すぎたし、終われなかった... 先生が 「諦めた方いい」 と言った...

ところで、この本はその先生の本だった。返すのを忘れちゃった。先生ごめんね！

so yeah, this is the first book i remember reading and i was obsessed with it. some of the pages fell out from how many times i used to reread it as a kid... it's actually missing pages 193 and 194... i never did find those... maybe it's karma for accidentally stealing it...

i used to have a massive crush on gwyn as a kid. an outcast, a bit of a weirdo and a wizard? 11 year old me was swooning... also his grandmother was so iconic? i wish i was as cool as her.

although i only vaguely remember what happened in the book now, it's spirit lives on in the form of flower pressing. gwyn's sister would press forget-me-nots and use them in her drawers and younger me thought that was the coolest thing ever. since then i always pick up flowers and what not and slap them in-between a massive sheet of baking paper inside a random psychology textbook.

a bilingual post cause we roll like that, but also look how cute my bear rug is!!! also Little Herdy cameo even though he's not from Wales. he's so soft :)

Asking for Help in Japanese

こんちは！！みんな元気？

somewhere along the line, you’ll probably have to ask someone for some help, but just like in english, there are formal and informal ways to ask for help.

below is a section from Daichi 2 which lists the ways you can ask for help from most to least polite.

i would say to definitely avoid 「ちょっと手伝って」unless you’re talking to a close friend or it’s urgent? if you’re talking to a friend 「ちょっと手伝ってください」is your best bet. like the picture says, the one above is probably best for coworkers/classmates who you’re not that close to?

if you’re asking a stranger, it would be best to use 「ちょっと手伝ってくださいませんか」. using the one above could be seen as strange and overly formal so it’s best to leave that one for teachers/bosses.

as a note, this pattern works with any verb in the て form, so learning just the endings and what situations to use them in will greatly help you to adjust your politeness and sound more 上手！

今日、おいしい肉まんを食べながら、授業のボキャブラリーを勉強した。

今日の授業、早い！本当に短かっただよ。先生は、「クリスマスのプレゼントです」と言った。

朝の3時だけど、マンガを読む。どんなマンガかな、今決めていない…。

明日はクリスマスだけど、たくさん授業がある。泣きたいなあ。

4月14日(水)

やぁー！

遅くなってけど、昨日のブログだぜ。今、午後５時だが、起きったばかりだ。

また筆記を書けなかったから、今日の写真は日の出だ！今日授業があったから、日の出を逃したけど、この写真、高校生の時を撮った。

昨日、5つの授業で出席したぜ…

間違いよ！「Zoom Fatigue」 は本当だよ！

最後の授業で死にそうだった…

最初のクラスはいつも楽しいだから、大丈夫だったけど、2と3時限は大変だったよ。4と5時限は英語であるから、簡単な授業と思ったが、実は大変すぎー！

先生方はつまらなそうだった．．．俺も！寝させてください、先生！

５時限で先生はブレークアウトルームを作って、「Homo sapiens, Humanity and People」 のイメージについて話すって言ったけど、俺のルームで２人のクラスメートが全然話さなかった。ちょっとむかついた。「参加したくなければ、どうしてクラスでいるよ？」 と言いたかったなぁ…

でも、学年の同級生は親切な人で、彼らとめちゃ仲良くやっている。ちょっと恥ずかしいけど、もし、みんなは俺のクラスでいなければと、俺、何もやっていけない。みんながいるから、俺も頑張れる！

難しい授業とか、宿題とか、みんあがいるとなんでも楽しくなる！

恋と愛の違い！(differences between 恋と愛）

ヤッホー！

お元気ですか？

最近、俺は「ゲームを終わる」のキャンペーンをしている。この前週、「Danganronpa V3 Killing Harmony」と「Dandelion - Wishes Brought to You -」を終わった！今「Amnesia: Memories」をして中だ。ちょっと怖いだけど、キャラクターと恋するのを楽しいだ！今、ウキョウとケントが大好きだけど、まだシンとウキョウのルートが始まらない。

そういえば、今日の Langblr Word of the Day Challenge のプロンプトは Loveだね。

あ．．．これ．．．

難しいよ！！

みんなはきっと知ってるけど、日本語で恋と愛、二つは Loveだね。でも、同じ意味じゃない！

まず、恋と愛の違いについて話しよう！その後で、曲をリンクする。

恋（こい）

恋と言うと、ロマンチックな Love の感じがある。

ドキドキするの Love は恋だ。学生の時の Loveも恋だ。 デートしてる Loveも恋だ 。

恋で始まる言葉はたくさんある。

例えば、初恋（はつこい）は「First Love」で、 恋人（こいびと）は「Lover」だよ。

恋歌（こいううた）は「Love Song」で、恋文（こいぶん）は「Love Letter」。

恋はほかの言葉より一般的（いっぱんてき、common)だ。

恋 is romantic love, the sort that makes you feel butterflies in your stomach. it’s generally considered temporary and the sort of love between couples who are dating/not in a super serious relationship. in a way it’s similar to liking someone romantically.

愛（あい）

愛は本当に真面目だ。

結婚した人 や 真剣な交際中人（ しんけん なこうさいちゅうひと、people in a serious relationship）の感じがある。

でも、家族愛（かぞくあい、Familial Love) と 友愛（ゆうあい、Friendship）もある。 愛は Agape という意味だ。

そして、好きなものも愛せるよ！ゼッタイ捨てられないものがあるかな？日本語で、この「Attachment」は 愛着（あいちゃく）という！

他の言葉もある！例えば、愛犬（あいいぬ）や 愛猫（あいねこ）は「Beloved dog/cat OR love for dogs/cats」という意味だ。

愛国（あいこく）は「Patriotism/Love for one’s country」と 愛車（あいしゃ）は「beloved car (or other vehicle)」

でも、愛人（あいじん）は「Mistress/Lover」という意味だから、気を付けてくださいね！

愛 is serious love between those who are married or in a committed relationship. it’s considered to be unconditional and without reward. but it can also be used to describe love between friends and family, as well as love you feel towards objects/places.

some consider 愛 to be the next stage after 恋, going from just dating to considering living the rest of your lives together. it’s a heavy term when used romantically, so if you’re not sure, it’s best to use 恋

恋愛（れんあい）

when you put 恋 and 愛 together, your get 恋愛 which is another word for love.

恋 and 恋愛 mean the same thing (romantic love) but 恋愛 is preffered in formal situations. although it can be used in informally, it is generally more objective, as opposed to 恋 which has more romantic connotations.

恋愛 is used in words like 恋愛結婚（れんあいけっこん、Love Marriage), 恋愛映画（れんあいえいが、Romantic Movie), 恋愛問題（れんあいもんだい、Love problems) etc.

長いポストだよねぇ。でも、俺はいつもこの言葉を間違えるから、ちゃんと説明したかったよ。

それで、曲のタイムだぜ！今日、２つの曲がある。

まずはユースフルな気持ちの恋歌だ。

高校生の恋のテーマで、懐かしい曲だ。その曲は、Just 4Uさんの「大胆不敵に恋したい」(I Want to Fall in Love Fearlessly)

次、愛の曲だ。

この曲は真面目だし、ちょっと悲しいし、いいバラッドだ。天気の子から RADWIMPSさんの「愛にできることはまだあるかい」(Is There Still Anything That Love Can Do?)

雨の中でピアノを弾くのは大変そうね。

みんなさん、一目惚れ（ひとめぼれ、Love at first sight）を信じるか？したことがあるか？

俺は信じない。友達なら愛せる。他人なら「あ！可愛い！」や「イケメンだ！」だけだと思う。けど、ゲームやアニメで信じる！

trying to update regularly with this book challenge so here's some on-brand japanese lit for today's prompt!!

はい、これ！

芥川龍之介 (あくたがわ りゅうのすけ) 先生の短編集 (たんぺんしゅう、short stories)だよ。

実は、これ、４月ぐらい読んだけど、そのあとで、他の本を終われなかった。

i really like how the collection is structured, separating akutagawa's work into different "styles". it was quite fun to see his writing develop with each new story although the intro did give a rather depressing reason for the change...

one of the stories in this book, In A Grove, was adapted in 1950 as the film Rashomon, which is generally considered to be the film that introduced Japanese Cinema to the west. due to it's uniqueness, it wasn't exactly a massive hit in japan, but after it's screening in Venice, Rashomon became an international hit and even won an honorary academy award in the US.

the film reveals it's story through a fragmented narrative told by multiple unreliable narrators before ending without a clear conclusion, leaving the audience in the dark of the true events that transpired that night. the use of multiple unreliable testimonies can be seen as an exploration of the flawed reliability of human memory. this innovative way of storytelling inspired the birth of a new cinematic technique, dubbed the Rashomon Effect.

the film, and the story the film is based on, never reveals what really happened or who the true culprit was. this inspired the japanese idiom, 藪の中 (やぶのなか、In a Grove), which is used to describe a situation where a conclusion can't be drawn due to insufficient evidence, a bit like "in the dark" in english, (which is also a jpn phrase, 闇の中 (やみのなか).

who knew one short story could inspire so many things... there's even a super prestigious Akutagawa Prize for authors in Japan.

i still haven't actually gotten round to watching Rashomon, but i really enjoyed learning about the influence of akutagawa's works and his legacy so i'll consider this my productive act of the day! at 3 in the morning...
