Merry Christmas!!

So, today's Christmas!! How's the celebration and everyone doing? Good? Yeeaaa right. Here, we had family gatherings as usual, able to celebrate this occasion with them is really a treasure. Had a great time spending with my fam, seeing them smile and having fun makes my worries in the future disappear at the moment. Laughter is in the air. I feel HOME again. I am so lucky that I have them in my life, they are so precious to me.

Time before Christmas Eve, me and my cousin did bake banana loaves and cheesecakes for her business orders. Yes, It was tiring but felt great and worth it.

Rome and Us

Holidaying in Rome is one helluva relaxing experience. Even if you aren’t a very crazy history buff, it is a place with the typical quintessential get away from it all. With guided tours all around and a very reliable metro system, its simple to navigate yourselves around the historical capital of the Roman empire. Even getting lost on my way from the Vatican back to Rome wasn’t really a hitch, just two train rides away and you’re exactly where you want to be!

The guides there are good at pointing things out and adding in a story or two but to appreciate the true extent of the skill, blood and sweat involved in making the city as grand as it was. I suggest picking up a few novels based on Rome just before you go. You wont really think much about this grassy field unless you truly read up on what it was to the people of that time. I myself picked by Daughters of Rome by Kate Quinn. A book always helps me get into the character of the city, the mood of the people and while it pinpoints locations in the narration, it is also a quick guide to some of the important places to visit in that city.

With storytelling, every place becomes so much more interesting than it is. A big grassy field becomes the spot where ancient romans raced their chariots in front of all the world to see. A four-horse drawn chariot while you imagine screaming plebs and chanting Romans This was the Circus Maximus. 

After watching gladiator movies, you can imagine the underground tunnels in the Colosseum being filled with roaring tigers and blood-thirsty men. The guides at the Colosseum will walk you through the paths that ancient gladiators may have taken, second guessing reasons why things may have happened. You can imagine an entire arena screaming for the blood of the weak, completely ignoring the sculptors and carvings surrounding them. For the curious mind, you will notice the entire Colosseum covered in holes and its upto you to figure out why!

When I think of Rome, the first thing that comes to mind is the Pope. The pope is an instant celebrity during and before his sermon. His drive around the entire plaza has everybody in cheers yelling out Viva le Papa! I didn’t really get what his sermon was about since it was in Italian, but all the hue n cry was well worth it.

Lastly, what deserves to be mentioned is the famous Italian pizza. Being a vegetarian I was very worried about sustenance on my trip but it seems that the Italians have easily put that fear to rest. They put on every possible vegetable on your pizza and manage to make them taste good. Whether it’s the good ol’ tomato n onion or potatoes or even eggplant, you name it, you’ll find a pizza with that topping. My personal favorite was a basil flavored one I found in a tiny little local pizzeria hidden behind the Vatican somewhere. If Italy is where the pizza was conceived then boy! Have the rest of us been doing it wrong!

Another treat you simply should not miss is the gelato there. You find them in every corner and while the typical flavors are present, a flavor which I found v tasty was the biscotti flavor. Somewhat caramel-ey, somewhat chocolat-ey.

Overall a very fun place to visit, as long as you don’t take yourself too seriously and not try to finish every single thing in the city because Rome is one place you can visit over n’ over again and still find new things to do. I for one enjoyed being away from my adrenalin filled existence to a somewhat easy going place, reading to myself in the shadow of the Colosseum imagining what it would have been to live here decades ago.

Japan - Fushimi Inari Taisha 

My friend and I took the path less travelled and decided to get off the train a couple stops earlier instead of heading straight to the shrine. The walk through the quaint little town took us along the back of the village houses where there was a canal. It was a lovely and quiet walk and rather beautiful to see the other side of Japan that most tourists would never see because they do not wander from the popular path. One part of the walk even caused us to crawl through a little tunnel under a walk bride. Definitely not the typical tourist path to get to the shrine.
