I think one of the most appealing character building aspects of arrested development is how fully fleshed out the women are. It came out in 2003 and it does better than shows coming out now, 20 years later. All of the women are equally if not more so scheming, conniving, and manipulative as their male counterparts. Lindsay is portrayed at being good at manipulating men’s emotions and sexualities despite marrying a gay man, which makes sense when the show establishes her better relationship with her father. Her mother gave her an eating disorder, so her father got to teach his little girl how to get people to give you what you want. She’s also (inadvertently) adept at running a business, which was no doubt the influence of both parents and her “twin” brother.

Her daughter, Maeby, took her mother’s skill for lying and her father’s aptitude at earnest acting. She’s just as manipulative as the women before her, if not more. By pure lies alone, she gets multiple jobs, free housing, and cheats the school system. Instead of using roofies to sexually assault Steve Holt, she uses them specifically to avoid sex. Maeby constantly defies expectation, subverts standards, and makes her own path as the daughter with two negligent, well meaning parents.

Which brings us to Lucille. Lucille and her husband set the standard for all of their children and grandkids. Although we can assume there was a long line of weirdly fucked up Bluths and Jenkins (Lucille’s maiden name) before them, they are the epitome of the Bluth name: selfish boomers/silent gens that will stop at nothing to get their way. Lucille is a queen at mind games and casually cruel offhand remarks. She is revealed to be in charge, in a spin that surprises few watchers. Everyone know’s Lucille pulls the strings, even if George sr is equally exploitive.

Even the minor ladies in ad pass the bechdel test with flying colors. Maggie is, quite frankly, kind of a bitch - she doesn’t care who she’s screwing over, as long as she looks good (par course for the Bluth family). Kitty is a true home wrecker: she knows her partner’s wife and she knows that she “hates” the cheating. We don’t know how much it actually bothers Lucille, but Kitty doesn’t care. All of Michael’s love interests leave him, and he’s the main character. His son, George Michael, doesn’t fare much better romantically either, except with Ann, who also eventually rejects him. Even Ann, the devout evangelical Christian, is still given notable characteristics and personality traits: faithful, passionate, stubborn. From Lupe to Lucille II, the women are allowed to be just as full as the men, which is refreshing, especially from 20 years ago.

You went to reply but Amy held her hand up and stood in front of you, and you looked down at her.

“My brother has a right to wear whatever he wants. If he wants to wear suits, he can. If he wants to wear dresses he can.”

“No he cannot! It’s not normal!”

“And it’s not illegal!” Amy snapped.

“How would you know?! Someone call the police!”

Amy reached into her pocket, pulling out s badge she flashed it with a fake smile on her face.

“I am the police. And I know there is nothing wrong with what’s going on here. These changing rooms and for both men and woman. This is not a woman’s store, they sell men’s clothes too. So, therefore, no laws are broken.”

The woman turned to the clerk who was talking to her manager and to the security guard.

“You seriously can’t be okay with this!”

“Actually, I am. He comes here every month with his sister to buy a new dress. He’s a regular customer, and no one has any issues with it, so you can kindly leave.”

The woman started screaming and shouting and Amy sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose she called Jake and Holt to come and handle the situation.

Amy turned to look at you, looking at the dress she shook her head.

“That’s not the one, maybe white?”

The manager handed you a white dress and you changed into it.

Walking out, you saw the woman go to hit Amy so you walked over and stood in front of her. Arms crossed over your chest as you looked at the woman who backed away.

“I suggest you back away now.”

“You’re not normal!”

Amy pushed past you again.

“He is normal! He likes dresses, so what?! Men can like dresses and flowers and chocolates and sappy crappy romance films and men can cry and get upset and feel hurt, there’s nothing wrong it it! So shut up because you’re under arrest!”

Since i already made humanized design of Talyllyn and Dolgoch, why not make one for their fictional twin too? I couldn't draw train and this also for my personal AU.

Yes, I gave Rheneas glasses because why not? I also believe Rheneas is 10 Dosa Besar Soeharto enjoyer 🙃🙃🙃 (Indonesian Government, please don't arrest me-).

I also think that Skarloey love to wear fancier outfit than Rheneas (Well, i meant he's the railway's 'mascot'. So it makes sense for him to dress like that, right?)

Their personality in this AU is not that different from the canon one. Except the part where Skarloey is kind of 'Ustadz Film Azab Indosiar whereas he somehow fight syaithan daily eventhough his main job is for teach quran to the villager. Making you wonder how he kept getting into this shit' type of character. While Rheneas is a bit more aloof here (think of Captain Holt from Brooklyn 99 but warmer). This exterior can be cracked if you show him a cute cat or just the pictures of it. Along with Duke, he become the straightman of the group.

So I think the thing with cop media that has its defenders even among leftists who are normally very cynical of copaganda,

and the examples I'm thinking of are the City Watch Discworld books, Columbo, and to a lesser extent, Hot Fuzz,

the thing that all of these have in common is that these characters - Columbo, Sam Vimes, Nicholas Angel - apply the law equally to rich people as they do to poor. The fact that it's harder to take down the rich person is not a deterrent, in fact it usually only makes them try harder.

I think where Brooklyn Nine Nine loses out and becomes copaganda is in the underlying assumptions. Note that Madeline Wuntch is evil because she wants to discredit Holt's department by showing that their use of police funds is turning up no results - and she expected that when she gave them additional funding. However, she is not evil for introducing those additional funds just to perpetuate the War on Drugs at the expense of however many nonviolent offenders it takes to make the stats look good. That's not a factor any character on the show considers. The understanding is that the police SHOULD be enforcing the War on Drugs, but that Wuntch has given them a weapon that is ineffective but makes for good PR.

Whereas Frank Butterman et al. are evil because they insist upon Sanford being a paradise exclusively for old, white retirees and absolutely nobody else, and are willing to murder street performers and teenage hoodlums just to satisfy their deranged idea of a peaceful village. The underlying assumption is that a peaceful, law-abiding village is a bad thing because "law and order" is enforced by a visit to the catacombs. It's noticeable how Nicholas Angel's crusade to arrest the whole village results in exactly 0 deaths, at least until the head of the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance decides to get a little too clever in the vicinity of a sea mine. Killing wrongdoers provides order, but not law, and the philosophical disagreement between Angel and Butterman is that there is a difference between those two concepts.

Meanwhile, in Feet of Clay (the best Sam Vimes Discworld book), Vimes says "The common people? They’re nothing special. They’re no different from the rich and powerful except they’ve got no money or power. But the law should be there to balance things up a bit. So I suppose I’ve got to be on their side." Which stands as his entire philosophy of policing on its own, to say nothing of the fact that he's just spent a whole book making life very difficult for every single aristocrat.

The escapist fantasy of a police officer ends up being one who applies the law equally.

ohhhh blorbo from my own OC... i play favorites so hard with this man and i gave him the worst, most dramatic emocringe backstory bc i. deserve it.

wolfgang holt was born in the mid-late 70s in a small town in mississippi. his mom was a practicing witch and his dad walked out on them pretty early on. money was tight but life was good for a while.

then his mom remarried. the guy was fine at first. he helped pay off their house, he took care of them, he wasn't the most emotionally vulnerable but he wasn't outright awful. but things got worse. as they do. wolf's step dad's social drinking became outright aggressive alcoholism. he started abusing wolf's mom. he started abusing wolf. he would abuse wolf's mom even more when she tried defending her son. some of his friends would try to convince him to go to church with them to get "healed" of his drinking problem and get him away from the "godless whore" he'd married.

it turned out he'd assumed his wife saying she was a witch was some kind of joke. just a way of flirting. some oo i put a spell on u type shit. one night he caught her casting protection spells on her son while he slept and snapped. the drinking, the persistent brainwashing from friends and family, and the general closed mindedness of their little conservative town resulted in him dragging wolf out into the woods behind their house and beating him to near unconsciousness and leaving him for dead in the snow, promising that his mom was next and they'd meet again in hell.

left alone and wounded in the cold, wolf was an easy target for hungry predators. a small pack of (WHAT ELSE) wolves found him. they started ripping him apart, tearing mostly into his throat and chest.

as far as wolf remembers he escaped on pure adrenaline alone, just running as fast as he possibly could towards home. he's never questioned how he was able to move at all.

when he got home his mother was already dead and his step dad was blacked out. it only made sense to shoot him before he could wake up again.

orphaned and effectively homeless, he stumbled out into the woods again, walking until he reached the next town and stumbling into the first emergency room he could find. the drs were understandably alarmed that he was even alive. in fact, his injuries had already started to heal. the injuries to his throat had left him mute, and they were unable to get him to communicate with them in any other way, so they got him patched up and put in a room to rest while they tried to find out who his parents were and what could've possibly happened. officers were called to the er, and wolf (who had been pretending to sleep and listening for signs of cops, afraid that he'd be arrested if they found out he killed his step dad) bolted while they were all distracted.

he's been alone since. his mom's spells were more real and more powerful than even she would've guessed, and now he's effectively immortal. he hasn't realized this himself yet, whether through willful ignorance in order to ignore the trauma or because he doesn't believe in those things so he's unable to accept them no one knows. but any wound he sustains will heal, eventually, no matter how bad. truly traumatic injuries leave marks--the wolf attack left him mute, scarred, and blind in one eye--but the more minor ones can heal in minutes with no lasting evidence.

wolf now lives in a cabin he built himself in a dense forest bordering some mid-sized city. every now and then he needs to make supply runs, so he sneaks into city limits at night to steal whatever he can't hunt or grow or make himself. unfortunately, he has an overactive sense of self preservation... and unfortunately, a city is full of people. anyone who seems even remotely like a threat ends up dead, and the older he gets the looser the definition of "threat" becomes, to the point where someone even slightly annoying could end up missing a head or with a shotgun shell in their chest. stories start to circulate of the slasher in the woods, and it becomes the ~cool~ thing to do to go party in there and make it home alive. and nothing's more annoying than teenagers who think they're immortal.

You wake up extra groggy than usual. How strange. You wiggle your arms but are unable to. All you get is a rattle from chains now connected to your wrists. "What the- Jake!" You yell out to your boyfriend. "Yeah babe?" Jake pops his head in the bedroom. "What is this?" You say to him while rattling the chains. "Oh that? Thats just a precaution. Don't worry about it." He says and walks towards you. "Jake, this isn't funny. I need to go to work! I am handling a major lawsuit that can either break or make my career. Let me out.", Jake ignores you and just gives you his dorky smile. "You don't need to worry about that. You're not working anymore. I've gotten a small raise soo I can make sure were living a comfortable lifestyle without you working! Awesome right? Now you can stay safe at home. It'll be just you and me!". You were dumbfounded. "Jake, no. I have a life outside us. You know that. Now let me go! This is kidnapping!" You were starting to struggle. "LALALA IM NOT LISTENING!" Jake said and left your bedroom. "WAIT! AT LEAST TURN ON THE TV!" You yelled out. But Jake was already gone. "Well Shit."

Jake has made escape impossible. Sucks for you. But at least he made sure you can still watch tv and play games.

As time passes on you'll get more frustrated. This isn't funny anymore. You're reputations in the firm is probably screwed.

But Jake doesn't care. He has his soulmate with him forever! No one can mess with you. You're all his.

Jake will progress your 'relationship'. So instead of just dating, you'll be engaged!

He made his proposal as romantic as he could without letting you out of the house.

Then he'll bribe someone to marry you two! You wouldn't believe how easy is was to bribe someone to do it. Ah such a sweet wedding it was. Some fiction books with sad endings to consider reading, and why

Raise your hand if you've ever been personally victimized by a book where the dog dies at the end. Raise your other hand if you literally flinch when you hear the words "Bridge to Terabithia".

So much of what we read for school in America, at least when I was growing up, was so sad, wasn't it? It was worse when the sadness wasn't earned, when the book was 100 pages of playing with puppies and then 20 pages of sobbing (looking at you, Where the Red Fern Grows).

Why all the bummers? There's a little bit of snobbishness at play there - speaking as someone who got an English degree in undergrad, there are a lot of people who don't believe a book has literary value if it has a happy ending. But there's something more, too: emotional education.

Globally, we're dealing with a lot of sadness in real life right now and have been for many years. There is a very real global mental health crisis happening, especially among young people. Sometimes it is good to use media as a fluffy escape from a grim reality, and as a species we do love a happy ending. I firmly believe in hope and love the hopepunk genre - but I also believe that everything doesn't work out the way we want it to all the time.

Sadness in fiction can function as practice or companionship for experiencing sadness in real life. If you're in the right mindset, it's important to read sad books.

It's not a spoiler to say that the endings of the following books are sad. These books deal with sad material or characters who struggle throughout. Also, a sad ending doesn't necessarily mean the hero doesn't win, that there is no hope for the characters or their world, or that everything is meaningless. It just means acknowledging that suffering is real, sacrifices are sometimes necessary, and at some point, we all have to grieve.

I've listed some titles you might want to peruse below the cut. The "sadness" in them varies book to book, from the personal to the global. -The His Dark Materials trilogy, ending with The Amber Spyglass, by Phillip Pullman (middle grade fantasy about a world where everyone's soul is external, expressed by an animal called a daemon, and a young girl who uncovers a scientific mystery with multiversal consequences)

-A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness (young adult fabulism about a boy whose mother has a terminal illness and who suddenly begins receiving visits from a large treelike monster late at night)

-The Elegance of the Hedgehog, written in French by Muriel Barbery and translated into English by Alison Anderson (adult contemporary fiction about a friendship between a middle-aged concierge and a teenage girl with depression, both of whom are secretly brilliant but pretend not to be)

-The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang (adult fantasy about a young woman who gains unimaginable power, paralleling the brutal occupation of China by Japan during World War II)

-The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (young adult historical fiction, narrated by a personified Death, about a girl who begins to steal books in Nazi Germany)

-Dear Martin by Nic Stone (young adult contemporary fiction about a Black American boy named Justyce who begins to write letters to Martin Luther King Jr. after he experiences police violence)

-House Arrest by K.A. Holt (middle grade contemporary fiction in verse about a boy who is put on house arrest for stealing money for his baby brother's medical bills)

-Anger Is a Gift by Mark Oshiro (young adult contemporary fiction about a Black American boy who gets panic attacks after his father is murdered by police, whose life is changed irreversibly again after police violence at his school)

-We Are Okay by Nina Lacour (young adult contemporary fiction about a young lesbian who finds herself reflecting on her grief alone in her dorm over winter break)

-The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (young adult contemporary fiction about a girl who witnesses the violent death of a friend at the hands of police, whose murder then starts a wave of national protests and personal turmoil)

-Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein (young adult historical fiction about two young women, one a spy, the other a pilot, during WWII)

-And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini (adult historical fiction about a poor family in Afghanistan who experiences far-reaching consequences after a father decides to sell his three-year-old daughter to a wealthy, childless couple)

-A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (adult historical fiction about two Afghani women who marry the same man decades apart after each experiences a family tragedy, as well as what comes after)

-Beloved by Toni Morrison (adult historical fiction about a formerly enslaved woman haunted by the living ghost of her daughter, who died violently as a baby)

-The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides (adult contemporary fiction about a family of sheltered girls who begin to commit suicide one by one)
