Do you know the fact that earlier no people other than prisoners, clowns, prostitutes and socially marginalised people were allowed to wear stripe shirts? To know more visit https://credoforu.fashion.blog/2020/01/31/know-your-stripes/ One of the survivors named John Holwell who later became the Governor of West Bengal left this account of this Black Hole Monument.

Lady Canning Memorial:
She was the wife of the Governor General and Viceroy of India, Charles Canning. The tomb was built in her memory (1817–1861) in which her name was made immortal by a sweet maker, Bhim Nag who made Pantua, a type of sweet and named after her as Ladykeni.

MacDonald Island Park in Fort McMurray
Fort McMurray's Entertainment Hub
Situated on the banks of the junction of the Clearwater River and Athabasca River is Canada’s largest community recreation, leisure, and social centre – MacDonald Island Park.
This year marks the Island’s 40th year anniversary of being Fort McMurray’s recreation hotspot.
According to the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC), MacDonald Island is rich in history dating back to 1872 when John James MacDonald arrived in Fort McMurray to work for Hudson’s Bay Company.
He was the first known settler during this time and set up “residence on ‘McMurray Island’, which was renamed MacDonald Island” after he allotted the land.
The MacDonald family remained on the Island through the 1880s to the 1910s, when only a few residents remained in the area after the fur trade declined. And in 1942, the last person to reside on the Island moved away.
In 1966, local athlete and resident Charles ‘Chuck’ Knight began campaigning for a year-round facility. The year following, a volunteer group completed construction for the Miskanaw Golf & Country Club. Knight became the driving force for the facility.
The MacDonald family remained on the Island through the 1880s to the 1910s, when only a few residents remained in the area after the fur trade decline and in 1942 the last person to reside on the Island moved away.
After Knight became Mayor of Fort McMurray in 1973, the council appointed a steering committee to oversee the construction of the MacDonald Island Recreation Complex.
It opened for its first time with a golf course, three baseball fields, a football and soccer field, four tennis courts, cross-country ski trails, a cricket pitch, archery and an indoor facility with ice rinks and a 12-sheet curling rink in 1978.
In 1993, the park was renamed the C.A. Knight Recreation Centre to honour Knight. He retired to British Columbia in 1989 and passed away at the age of 77 in 2011.
In 2015, Knight was inducted into the Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame for his community efforts. An article in MyMcMurray.com quoted his daughter Kim Holwell stating: “I’m so proud that his vision and legacy still positively influence the community and is being recognized.”
During 2006 and 2008, the Centre closed down for repairs and reopened in 2009 with two NHL-sized arenas, an eight-sheet curling rink, an indoor playground, two indoor field houses, an indoor running track, a fitness centre, squash and racquetball courts and meeting and banquet facilities, among other world-class amenities.
In 2011, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo hosted an official ribbon cutting ceremony and named the street leading into the Island, C.A. Knight Way and further honoured Knight with a memorial waterfall inside the lobby of the Suncor Community Leisure Centre.
The same year brought in the city’s largest concert when iconic rock band KISS came to Fort McMurray to perform. The attendance saw nearly 10,000 fans.
And in 2015, the Globe and Mail headlined “CFL comes to Fort McMurray’s field of dreams” when the Canadian Football League hosted the northernmost game with the Edmonton Eskimos and the Toronto Argonauts in MacDonald Island’s new $133-million Shell Place stadium.
Forty years later, the Island operates as a not-for-profit corporation and is home to the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, the Miskanaw Golf Club and Shell Place. A long list of successful events has and continue to take place since the completion of the recreation centre hub.
Today, residents are flocking to MacDonald Island for Fort McMurray’s new hometown summer music festival – Summer Sounds FM. It takes place from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. For tickets and to learn more, visit MacDonald Island Park’s website.

July 1890,
"I know it ain't much..." Joseph felt shy as he showed his wife around the cottage. It had once belonged to his grandfather, and was fairly pretty on the outside, but it had been neglected ever since the elder passed away. "Are you certain you will find comfort here, my darling? Little Henford is quite different to Britechester, you know..."
"Of course I am certain!" Alice swung the shutters open. The sudden movement raised up some dust, making the woman cough. She did not care. "It's a fixer upper, but it is lovely! Look at the windows, the stained glass on the door... And it's right by the river, too!"
The pair had been married for over two years now. Yet, Joseph still managed to be surprised by his wife's optimism. It was always refreshing since the man tended to be an arduous overthinker.  She is right, he thought. It is about time we have a place to call our own.

Hi!✨
I'm starting a (new) decades challenge. I just wanted to actually play the game with minor storytelling. This won’t become a WTWC 2.0, I promise 😅 And that’s also not me cancelling WTWC. I’m just here for a little casual gameplay ✌️ Hope you’ll like the Holwells as much as I already do x

December 1895,
Another year went by fast and suddenly the Holwells found themselves celebrating Thomas’ first birthday.
It was quite challenging having two young ones at the farm. As soon as Tom learned to walk, he started following Charlie up and down. They would run all over the cottage and make each other giggle over nonsense.
Joseph and Alice knew that the pair would grow up to be rambunctious little boys - yet, they were excited to see how their personalities would be shaped in the future.

August 1890,
Joseph never enjoyed having his portrait taken. It was the awkwardness of standing still for what felt like ages that'd fluster him the most.
“I also dislike it.” Alice plopped herself on his lap, giggling as her husband let out an oof with the impact. “My personality never shines through photographs, I tend to appear humourless. But I wanted us to remember this new chapter of our lives. So I'm glad we got new ones taken! Even though you look slightly constipated in your portrait.”
“Constipated?! Oh, the very idea!” He laughed.
It was true; she'd always look terribly serious. But Alice, he thought, my sweet Alice, you are the most amusing woman in the world.
The pair remained embraced a while longer as they studied their half empty parlour... The cottage was humble and cramped, and not as cosy as they hoped. But it was theirs - and they'd make a home out of it.

February 1891,
It wasn’t long until the Holwells realised just how different life in Little Henford was. It was a stark contrast to their once hustling routine. Britechester transformed itself at night with its theatres and restaurants, its swift carriages and loud passersby.
“There were bright lights and singers, and young lovers howling in the streets!” Alice loved the stillness of the countryside, yet missed the thrill she’d feel in the city. The closest thing to a Britechester night in Little Henford was having tea at Gnome’s Arms, the local pub. It truly was an adjustment. “And, oh! The music halls on busy Friday evenings! Those were the most special, were they not, my dear?”
Unlike his wife, Joseph adapted rather quickly. Silence inspired him. He would spend hours on end doing woodwork, and chatting with the plants they were now growing on the farm. Gnome’s Arms had also become the highlight of his day. He enjoyed getting to know the other locals and watching Alice tell her endless tales while sipping his beer.
As months passed, the pair grew into proper Little Henford villagers. Their days were simpler and calmer, though busier than ever before. Building up the small farm and recovering the cottage’s glory was an arduous duty. But at nights, when Joseph and Alice rested their heads, and the river waters lulled them to sleep, they knew making the move had been the best choice they’d made.

October 1893,
A whole year passed and Charlie grew into a cheerful little boy.
He really enjoyed following Joseph and Alice around the farm, mimicking them and attempting to help out with the chores. He was rather quiet and timid compared to the other children his age, but was extremely affectionate and displayed immense curiosity about the world around him.
His parents couldn't be happier to be raising such a loving healthy toddler, and the thoughts of bringing another little one into the world began crossing their minds once more.

Early October 1892,
"What do you have in mind for names, dear?" The man cleared his throat, which made Alice realise he was feeling certain. "I was thinking Joseph!" She laughed. And abruptly stopped once she saw her husband's puzzled expression. "Oh, you don't mean it, do you?" "Why not? I should like to have a namesake. It's a lovely thing to do." "Yes? And what if it's a little girl? Will we name her Alice?" "Well..." He cleared his throat again. This time, not as confident as before. "Perhaps Josephine...?" "Please!" Alice laughed again. The couple struggled to agree on many matters regarding the baby. Yet, they could not be more excited. As October approached and Alice became ever so large, the Holwells knew it would not be long now.

April 1892,
"Dear?" Alice mumbled, making the man promptly sit up on the bed he peacefully lounged just then.
"What is it, love? Are you feeling wobbly again?!" Alice's dizziness had become more frequent as the days went by. Joseph feared his wife could be experiencing the early stages of a severe illness, and would get quite antsy with every 'I'm alright!' she declared. "Shall I take you to the doctor?! Oh, dear! I'll ask the Annings for their horse!"
Joseph was about to stand up and bolt to the neighbouring farm when he felt Alice's hands on his shoulders, weighing him down. He was left completely puzzled once the woman started giggling. What's with you? He thought, and finally took a look at her. She was glowing.
"I already went to the doctor. This morning, with Mrs. Anning." Alice said between chuckles, unable to contain the excitement. "I am pregnant!"

9 December 1894,
After a long cold night of arduous labour, Alice gave birth to the couple’s second son. They decided to name him Thomas Henry Holwell.
As the sun came out revealing the white carpet that covered Henford, the entire family sat with their newest member, introducing themselves and their world to the newborn.

12 October 1892,
During the early hours of a stormy October night, Alice went into labour. And, as dawn approached, she gave birth to the couple’s first child: a baby boy.
They decided to name him Charles Andrew Holwell. Their Charlie.

October 1894,
“Oh, how tall you are!” Alice gasped once she saw her son reaching to her swollen tummy. “If you stretch a bit more, you’ll touch the stars!”
The toddler giggled and curiously tapped her belly.
“He will be a wonderful brother. I know it.” Joseph said later that night.
It was as though Charlie truly understood what was happening. He often babbled and sang to his unborn sibling, and he loved planting tiny kisses on his mother’s stomach.
“He really will.” Alice smiled as she realised Charlie had a gentle soul, just like his father.

Early 1894,
“My, oh my! Isn’t little Charlie so big now!”
All the ladies in Henford would stop to coo over the young child whenever the Holwells went up to the village.
“Handsome little lad. He’ll charm all our daughters, he will!” A woman chuckled.
“Oh, he is precious... And so heavy now, too.” Alice replied as she passed her son over to Joseph.
As she stared at Charlie, who giggled and blabbered childish words, Alice couldn’t help but feel a tad blue. Yes, he was growing up way too fast. He was yet to turn two, but he could already run up and down the cottage as well as say a couple of random words.
It was wonderful to see him grow. And yet, bittersweet.

Autumn 1892,
With a baby on the way, Joseph started taking more responsibility around the farm.
“I am only with child. I’m not an invalid!” Alice had been stubborn at first, but now was becoming increasingly breathless. It was harder to bend down and care for the plants, or run around the field after the chickens. And it was especially scary when she almost fell down the steep stairs once. Alice realised her tummy now blocked the view of her feet.
Taking a break from strenuous labour was not all bad. Joseph enjoyed spoiling her - and was a decent cook, they found out!
Between handing out teacups with honey and foot massages to his wife, Joseph also worked on his carpentry. By early Autumn, he finished the baby’s crib and a little bench for the garden for Alice to rest under her favourite tree.
