Yesterday I used all of my homemade tools that I learned how to make in Mondays ceramic workshop to investigate their capabilities when used with ink, and ink diluted in water. I think the outcomes are really interesting. I tried to approach this process without critical judgement of how the marks were turning out. As Elaine mentioned Monday, in the past students have used mark makings like this to inform sculptural pieces. I’d like to take a closer look at these mark makings now and see if I can use them to inspire maybe a 3D piece or maybe even incorporate them into my other two electives (PFV and Animation). I enjoyed this process a lot because it allowed me to be less precious about making a ‘pretty picture’ and gets me to step back and ask questions about the process of what I’m doing and what feels good to me. It also reminded me that not everything I produce has to have a positive outcome, and the reason why we do things like this is to see what works and what doesn’t and to confront maybe the self saboteur that holds us back from making something.

Sometimes you need a took to get a job done, and sometimes that tool isn't readily available locally. This was one of those time. I needed a clamp that could drop into the dog holes in my workbench (or any other 3/4" hole) so i got to work. Proof of concept is good, clamping mechanism works well, none if my hand made parts are loosening up, so i would call it a win! 2017 Brass Chandelier: The next project coming out of the vault is an oval chandelier made of brass tubing cut to various lengths. Each piece needed to be sanded from factory finish to mirror finish. This is the tool Phoenix had mad-maxed up. Granted this hungry machine a little sketchy to use haha, it works great!! ⁣ ⁣ The brass seats on the surface of the rubber wheels and you just hold it down with a small square of sand paper. I attended the ceramics mark making workshop yesterday and spent the evening and a lot of today making tools from things that I had lying around the house. I haven’t used all of the tools yet but I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do with ink and water based material. My next task is to create a map of words that are associated with my theme which is movement of the body/ body language particularly the type of movement observed in performative dance.
