「The reformed sword battle is the highlights. Since this is a replay, I want to put my everything in it」

The famous game which features male characters as historical Japanese swords, known as “Touken Danshi”, has been adapted to a stage play called “Touken Ranbu”. Performed in May this year in Tokyo and Osaka, the adaptation was overwhelmingly popular and has seemed to finish rather quickly. With the addition of several new casts, it will have its second performance during December 2016 in Tokyo and January 2017 in Fukuoka and Osaka. In celebration of the first performance, we have Ichigo Hitofuri, played by Hirose Daisuke and Namazou Toshirou, played by Sugie Taishi talk about their feelings about the stage.

Q. It has been half a year since the first premiere in May and the replay has been done rather quickly, How was your response to the last time you take part in it? T: The tickets for the premiere were sold out in no time. I think this means there are many people who want to watch the replay. I felt relieved and happy. But, there was also a desire to surpass that first performance. It is a work with many expectations, so there was pressure as well. D: Previously I had the opportunity to work with the voice actor and that person said, “I want to be involved in Touken Ranbu, too.” Even among stage actors, there are a lot of people who are unable to participate in. I think that this work attracts a lot of attention within the stage industry. During the performance, as well as after that, I heard the same thing coming from various people. T: I know right! I was often being called as『the kid, Namazou Toshirou in Touken Ranbu, right?』and I was really grateful for that.

Q. I would like to ask about the fans and the roles you two partaken in this work that has been drawing attentions from many people. T: The character I played, Namazou Toshirou, is fairly easy to get in the original game, but when he is raised properly, he is very useful in the second half, very much loved. Talking about the personality, he has many siblings. The tachi, Ichi-nii (Ichigo Hitofuri) is his big brother. Namazou Toshirou and Honebami Toshirou are wakizashi. We have lots of siblings that are tantou. I think both younger and older brother are super middle children. D: When Taishi gets into character, it really feels like he’s a younger brother, does it not? T: Since (during stage) there aren’t that many younger brothers. Yagen Toshirou (performed by Kitamura Ryo) is really making an impression.
