"When I look back, boy, I must have been green. Bopping in the country, fishing in a stream. Looking for an answer, trying to find a sign. Until I saw your city lights, honey, I was blind."
Elton John was born March 25, 1947.

Song Review: Elton John - “Honky Cat” (Session Demo)
Despite farting noises on the intro and playful, spoken asides on the outro, Elton John’s early version of “Honky Cat” is as near a take as a demo can be.
Released in the run up to the March 24 arrival of Honky Château’s 50th-anniversary edition, this version is fully realized, with the arrangement chiseled in rock, the horn charts written and some extra stringed instrumentation that surrounds the track in a more countrified atmosphere.
And the clowning results in a listen that elicits giggles, notwithstanding the serious musicianship on display.
As single No. 4 from the forthcoming release - read about the previous cuts here - this “Honky Cat” demo gives listeners real insight into John’s creative process and his druggy, happy-go-lucky state of mind while making Honky Château. The only question is why those acoustic accoutrements were ultimately mixed down so much.
Grade card: Elton John - “Honky Cat” (Session Demo) - A

when elton john sang ‘we’ve all gone crazy lately’ in someone saved my life tonight, evidently no one at the time realised he was being entirely prophetic

Song Review: Elton John - “Honky Cat” (Live, Feb. 5, 1972)
Heard “Honky Cat” so many times it’s on the never-again list?
No longer.
Elton John’s released his Feb. 5, 1972, in-concert version from the forthcoming Honky Château deluxe edition. Stripped back, with mandolin replicating the studio horn charts, this previously unreleased, first-time performance makes the case the album was over-produced.
“Honky Cat” follows “Rocket Man (I Think it’s Going to be a Long, Long Time)” from the same gig and a demo of “Mellow” ahead of the album’s March 24 release.
It’s splendid. The couple of vocal hiccups only add to the charming nature of this premiere - no wonder John chuckles with satisfaction, and/or relief, when it ends.
