9 people to get to know better

Thanks for the tag, @cleucas I did half of this on my phone then got distracted and tumblr ate it so I had to switch to laptop for that sweet, sweet auto-save.

I also have the kind of ADHD/possible AuDHD where any time someone asks me what I like, I forget everything I've ever enjoyed soooo I will probably come up with better answers in a day and frantically edit hahaha help.

1. Three ships: Rylan all day every day right now. Ummm I'm actually not a big 'shipper so when one grabs me it REALLY grabs me! Starting to dip a toe into Steddie from Stranger Things (Steeeeve Harringtonnnn) even though it makes me sad because I don't think they're bringing sweet baby Eddie back, and, uh, three way animated tie between Bee and Deckard from Bee and Puppycat, Bubbline from Adventure Time, and Rose Quartz/Greg Universe from Steven Universe.

Honorable mention to my first doomed ship which was Clark and Lana from Smallville. Just never got on board with Lois.

(I almost put the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria in here because I'm an asshole, but fuck Columbus!)

2. First ever ship: Maybe Sonic the Hedgehog and Amy Rose? He fast! She cannot catch up! Kawaii pathos! (Although I shipped him with Mina the Mongoose in the Archie comics as a kid RIP to those.) Or Meg Murry and Calvin O'Keefe from A Wrinkle in Time.

3. Last song: Bigger Than Love - Oh Wonder (asdlfkjalskdfj)

4. Last film: I watched some awful streaming romcom with my mom the other day and an equally awful Hallmark Christmas movie. Last film I actually enjoyed was probably His House. Scary and devastatingly beautiful!

5. Currently reading: Jane Austen's Emma on audiobook as I fall asleep and my own writing out loud to see if the dialogue is awkward in a bad way or in a good way.

6. Currently watching: Ghosts (UK - I’ve already seen the US one but I like this better so far). Research/I just like ghosts. About to start House of Usher and possibly Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

7. Currently consuming: one thousand Coke Zeros but only because I'm out of Dr. Pepper Zero my beloved.

8. Currently craving: Dr. Pepper Zero my beloved.

Interview with Half Shy (the songwriter of “Monster”)

For the last few months, I’ve been collecting information for a second edition of Exploring the Land of Ooo that will also cover the production of Distant Lands. This means that I’ve started to look into the new songs that we have been graced with this year, and this of course includes “Monster,” the beautiful track from the masterpiece that is “Obsidian”. And so I reached out to the song’s writer, Half Shy, who was kind enough to chat with me via email about the songwriting process!

In many ways, Half Shy is living the creative Adventure Time fan’s dream: She got asked by Adam Muto himself to write a song for “Obsidian” after he heard her music through Bandcamp! (I’ve dabbled in fan music before, and the fact that someone from the show might listen to it just blows my mind.) What an opportunity; I am so excited for her!

Since a second edition of my book won’t be coming out until after all the Distant Lands episodes air, I thought it would be best to share my Half Shy interview now. Read on for the fascinating behind the scenes story of how Half Shy and “Monster” came to be..

GunterFan: What is your origin story? How did you get involved in music, and how did the Half Shy project come to be?

Half Shy: I’ve been making music pretty quietly since I was in high school with a keyboard and guitar. I played one or two shows a year after college when I could find a friend or my brother to get up on stage with me, but I don’t really have that performer gene in me naturally. I get too much in my head and forget what the lyrics are to the song I wrote, or what the next chord is. Total brain freeze. So that whole experience is a bit of a mental drain. It’s something I think I’d like to dig into and figure out, but right now I’m really enjoying the time writing.

Even playing a song for my friends I still get pretty nervous. That’s where the name Half Shy comes from. I’ve always been interested in making things that by their nature draw a bit of a spotlight, but at the same time, I am just really quite nervous about the attention.

I recorded my first songs under my old name Hey V Kay in my bedroom and started putting them up online one at a time. When I got enough I thought about packaging it up into an album, but then got really distracted by learning how to fix up motorcycles and going to automotive tech school. When I eventually got back around to it I named the album Gut Wrenching.

After a few years I realized that I didn’t want the day-in-day-out life of a mechanic, I just wanted to know how to fix cars for myself and to have that knowledge in my back pocket. I got back into making music but grew frustrated at the process of writing and recording songs. I felt like I wasn’t able to capture the ideas I had in my head. Like trying to draw on your computer with a mouse. Doable, but it’s not going to come out like you’d hoped.

So these last couple of years I’ve focused more on learning the technical aspect of it, from the initial ideas and lyrics, to the recording and mixing. During that process I put out Bedroom Visionaries, and while writing I happened upon the name Half Shy in an old Thesaurus which felt instantly right. Learning all of that has been fun, I even went as far as to create my own book to solidify a daily writing routine (lyricworkbook.com). All that has been a bit of a tangent from actually making much music though. I should be getting my books in December from the press so I’m really looking forward to getting back into making more music instead of dealing with printing presses, setting up websites, and sourcing ribbon suppliers.

GF: What is the story behind "Monster"? How did the show get in contact with you?

HS: I keep a log of “Song Starters” with neat things I’ve heard in the world, and I would look through it every now and then and notice just how many came from Adventure Time. Eventually I thought well, I have to make a song about this show that just keeps breaking my heart. It was around the time I was nearly done with the first [Adventure Time-inspired] song “In My Element” that I got an email from Bandcamp saying “someone bought your album (Bedroom Visionaries).”

I get maybe one or two of these a month at most so I love to go in and say hi to the person and say thanks, be curious about who they are, [and] what they’re all about. Turns out it was Adam Muto, the executive producer of the show. (I asked and he has no idea how he happened upon my stuff. He guessed that I must have tagged something #adventuretime and he just happened to see it.) So I sent him an email saying, “Hey wow thanks for checking out my tunes. Also... holy crap you’ve made the best show I have ever seen in my life.” [I] played it real cool like. After finishing up writing my second [Adventure Time-inspired] song “Betty” I couldn’t help but fangirl real hard [and I sent him another message saying], “I’m sorry this is probably awkward, but I really love your show and I wrote these songs about it.” He was incredibly kind and shared them with his Twitter Universe, and a while after that I got a random email from him saying basically, “Hey, I’m working on this thing I can’t talk about, would you be interested?” I was like… well you know I’m pretty busy working at a sign shop so I’m gonna have to pass on this once in a lifetime opportunity (J/K. Obviously I fan-girl squealed and said yes immediately).

We chatted a bit about what the project was going to be and the direction. He mentioned there [would be] two Marceline songs in the special, [and he asked if I] would I be interested in giving the love song a try? Trying real hard to suppress my instant imposter syndrome I was like, “Yea, totally I’d be into giving that a shot!” So I read through the story and loved the idea of the dragon mirrored in Marceline, thinking through how they’ve both built up a protective shell, how she grew tough for a reason, but now she can open up and be vulnerable with PB.

From there I wrote the initial demo with the first two verses mostly intact and we went back and forth a few times editing it down into the final version. I recorded the final parts for the show in my little home studio in Seattle.

GS: When you were writing the song, what emotions, thoughts, or ideas were you channeling? Was there any sort of memory of event that you were trying to artistically "catch" or "recreate" with the lyrics or music?

HS: As far as channeling an emotion, generally I’d say just the experience of existing as a human. It can be so hard to open up and be vulnerable. I can remember that feeling even as a young kid—getting really excited about something and having someone completely trash it or look at you like, “Why are you so interested in that? It’s dumb.” [It causes us to grow] a little more weary to share ourselves because we know that hurt and embarrassment. The pain of being misunderstood is something I think a lot of us can relate to. Then having to decide whether to keep sharing those vulnerable parts of yourself or think, “They’re just not going to get it, I’m going to get hurt, so why bother?” and then stop putting yourself out there. You lose a lot with that thick armor though. You might feel protected, but you’re not feeling a whole lot of anything else other than the weight and chafing of it (I had a whole lot of armor-related metaphors that I didn't end up using.).

I struggle with this in songwriting too. I’m not the bolt-of-lightning type. There are pages and pages of cliches, total garbage, bad jokes, and cheesy lines that I have to get through in order to get to something that I am excited to put out there into the world: “Here I did this thing, I know it’s a little (this or that), but I made it... What do you think?” It’s hard to open yourself up to hearing the other end of that question.

I filled about 5 little pocket notebooks just thinking through the story, ideas, and trying to get this song right. I wanted it to feel familiar and honor the past songs of the show ([e.g.,] using the ukulele and referencing a few of the familiar chords from “I’m Just Your Problem”) but also be pretty open and vulnerable and different for [Marceline]. [I wanted to] show that she’s going through some tough emotions but also figuring herself out and growing.

GF: I feel like “Monster” is, at its core, an ode to the “Bubbline” ship. How do you feel about your song being intimately connected to one of the most famous LGBTQ+ relationships in animation? Do you have any general thoughts on Marcy and PB, Bubbline, etc.?

HS: Oh, I’m a total fan girl of Bubbline. The whole story of how Rebecca Sugar and Muto slowly morphed it into this deeper relationship is just great. As a part of the LGBTQ community myself it really means so much to see the representation of characters like yourself portrayed in an intelligent way. Growing up I was too young to fully understand what was going on but I saw Ellen getting cancelled, and [I] heard people around me saying they’d never watch her show again after she came out. That stuff sinks in as a kid and so to have these characters who are not only intelligent, but funny, complex, and unapologetically strong who also happen to be queer is really great. I love that the story here isn’t about their orientation, but that they’re people struggling with how to be open and vulnerable in a relationship.

It feels like something sci-fi and animated shows do so well—to show that ridiculousness of limiting who a person should and shouldn’t love. Marceline is a 1000+ year old half-demon/vampire and PB was born from the Mothergum of an apocalyptic radioactive world, but you’re going to get hung up on them loving each other? It sort of brings it into perspective in a really interesting way.

GF: Do you have any other thoughts about the experience that you'd like to share?

HS: Just how lucky, thankful, and honored I feel to be a part of my favorite show, writing a song for one of my favorite characters. It’s also incredibly cool how the people on the show are so willing to connect and collaborate with their fandom. Everyone [on the production crew] was very open and a real joy to work with.

What would be your favorite Bubbline moment?

My absolute favorite one is from Varmints. The whole "i like your handwriting" bit always gets me.

Honorable mentions:

-the ending of Take Her Back. I drew a comic for it for a reason!

-Marcy hugging Peebs after she thought she died, while the latter looks dumbfounded (its probably the concussion)

-the scenes in obsidian where you see them on the motorcycle together, holding onto each other. I like how they change positions due to the long drive so it wasnt just one of them driving. I liked how they held onto each other, the casual intimacy in it.

Well I've gone on record before saying I'd choose Korrasami above all else so I won't go back on that. Reasoning being, the Avatar franchise is by far my favourite piece of media of all time and it will stay with me forever, whereas I'm hoping I won't be stuck with Glee until the end of time. I'm invested in both though but even beyond the actual shows themselves, Korrasami will always have a uniquely special place in my heart.

I think I could give you a top 3 right now, which would be the two you mentioned and adding Bubbline. In order, if need be, that would go:

Korrasami (The Legend of Korra)

Bubbline (Adventure Time)

Brittana (Glee)

As for a no. 4 and 5, it depends on my mood and I don't think I could give an all-time top 5. Hollstein (Carmilla) probably deserves a spot for how hard I went for them and how much I love both characters, which is true for the top 3 as well and a requirement for me to truly love a ship.

Honorable mentions that could potentially take the no. 5 spot: Catradora, Lumity, Yue and Sokka (I-- yeah we need a straight one in here), Deanoru, and maybe Amberprice from Life Is Strange but I think that's mostly just me hopelessly loving Rachel Amber.

Thanks to Netflix, korrasami is now in my top 3 otps, barely bumping out catradora. Hollstein will always be at the top for making me finally admit to myself that I was bi and making me realize my attraction to girls was undeniable. The other in my top 3 is Genevieve and echo from Charon Docks at Daylight.

I love when people talk otps and what makes them a favorite, personal, near and dear to their heart, etc. I think everyone has at least a top 3, but catradora is still so special to me. Can you ramble on and on about who your fav ships are, who has been in the past, and who have been special to you. Thanks! Ps I started following you for hollstein during the middle of season 2

Ah, it appears we have many ships in common!!

Hollstein came to me when I really needed them most—I was about to go off to college and was anxious about finding my place in the queer community as well as making new friends outside my tiny hometown. But drawing fanart of them brought me lots of comfort, and through that I was able to come into my own art style, find a niche in the fandom, and meet friends whom I’m still close with today. They have such a unique vibe and to this day no other ship has felt as special as them 💖

Korrasami was just... revolutionary for their time! I remember watching the finale during my free period in high school and thinking about how incredible it was that there was wlw representation in a hugely popular animated franchise. Even if it was more subtle than the representation we have now, those two were such a huge stepping stone toward normalizing LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream media.

And then Catradora of course is so amazing!! If only little 17 year old Katie watching Korra and Asami’s happy ending knew that just 6 years later she’d get to see two female animated characters confess their love for each other and kiss on screen! Their dynamic is just so compelling and complex and sweet and ahh I love them so much

Oh? Thank you 🥺❤ I have wayyy to many ship, so I’ll just focus on my absolute faves.

Catradora: no one saw that one coming! *end of sarcasm*. THE friends to enemies to lovers ship. No one is doing it like them and no one ever will. The fact that the whole show is based on their relationship is insane. They melt my heart. I could write essays about them, but at least for today y’all are safe.

Harlivy: partners in crime!! let’s be evil together!! let’s kiss under the moonlight after we beat the joker with a bat. The flavour.

Bubbline: how can someone not love them, exes to lovers at its finest. Also, it was the first wlw ship in an animated show that I saw kissing, so kudos.

Batcat: especially the Gotham version, cause I have a thing for childhood friends turning into lovers, ant their chemistry is amazing. But I also love them in every other media, there’s something about the trope of the mysterious vigilante/ hot teasing villain that just feels right to me.

Lawlight and Remisa: *sigh* no, they are both non canon ships but who cares, I was 11 when I first watch Death Note and I shipped them to death, pun intended. The tension between L and Light?! The pure devotion that Rem had for Misa?! your honor I rest my case.

Finnrey: we could have had it allll. I love tfa!finnrey and what could have been. They’re both genuinely good people that deserved each other. Friends to lovers, baby!

Malec: They are the cutest!! I just think that there’s something very special about the way this relationship is portraited (especially in the show). Can’t help but love them!!

Honorable Mention: Korrasami, cause the paved the way for every lgbt+ ships in animation, Stony, Starmora, Wandavision cause they were my first mcu ships, Klaine and Brittana, cause I was obsessed with glee and I loved them very much, Steroline/Stelena, Clexa, Reddie, Ineffable Husband, Immortal Wives and God so many more.

A list of good LGBT representation in cartoons for people who were insulted by Voltron

Yo, since Voltron ruined every single chance of doing a good job at LGBT representation, I offer you GOOD development and representation on other cartoons that is not only limited to final credits.

Gravity Falls - Deputy Durland and Sheriff Blubs

Even though Disney execs forbid Alex Hirsch of inserting LGBT characters, especially at S02E09 “The Love God” (where the Cupid would make two background women fall in love), he managed to create a slow burn between Sheriff Blubs and Deputy Durland, since fans were noticing something could emerge from their relationship. Yes, it’s canon.

Adventure Time - Princess Bubblegum and Marceline Abadeer

After 10 long seasons of drama between these two, they were finally together at the last episode. If you like slow burn, angst and mutual pinning, you’re gonna love Bubbline.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - Netossa and Spinnerella/ Adora and Catra

While Netossa and Spinnerella are characters already introduced as a canon couple that shares a lovely complicity, Adora and Catra’s relationship is way deeper and more dramatic. Catra’s feelings after being abandoned by the protagonist she loves lead her to an antagonist role, the main dynamics of the series. While we still don’t know what will happen for the next seasons, it’s clearly Noelle Stevenson is creating a tension fuelled by love and hate between the main female characters.

Steven Universe - Ruby and Sapphire (Garnet)

Queen of LGBT representation, Rebecca Sugar developed an entire show dedicated to queer characters. Garnet is a stable fusion between Ruby and Sapphire and, while we always knew they were a couple, they finally managed to marry and kiss the last season. We are also presented to other LGBT characters that still don’t have a canon relationship, which means we still can have a slow burn development (such as Lapis and Peridot; Pearl and S., etc).

Honorable mentions

BoJack Horseman: this adult show presents us with a polirelationship, plus a main asexual character, Todd Chavez, who is slowly learning about his orientation. Yolanda Buenaventura is also asexual and shared a relationship with Todd for a short time. Rick and Morty: despite all polemics, Rick is canonically pansexual. Morty is also seen being proposed by Mr. Poopybutthole before having his memory erased. Yuri!!! on Ice: a touching-hearted anime that displays the evolution of Yuuri and Viktor’s relationship as they train to revive Yuuri’s career as a skater. Their interaction is as subtle as evident, open to free interpretation. Yet, they even share rings. Sailor Moon: the famous mahou bishoujo displays a sutble yet canon relationship between Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. The dubbed version censored them as “cousins”, so it’s recommended to watch the original japanese version of the show. Marvel Rising - Secret Warriors: following the comics, America Chavez came from another dimension which was destroyed. In order to save their daughter, her two mothers sent her to Earth-616. America’s also LGBT, though the movie doesn’t display a love interest for her. Star vs the Forces of Evil: even though there isn’t any self-proclaimed queer main characters, it was the first cartoon that ever displayed a kiss between two same-sex characters.

Future shows that I’m counting will display queer characters: The Owl House. The creator, Dana Terrace, has worked on Gravity Falls and directed 2007 Duck Tales. She has revealed she’s bisexual and is always fighting for LGBT representation in cartoons. Luz, one of the protagonists, seems to be non-binary.

The ending of Voltron CANNOT be considered a good LGBT representation. It failed and disappointed us. Therefore, let’s praise these shows for they deserve way more affection and love than Voltron ever did. Let’s put our minds and efforts on people who care about representation.

The Other Ships in My Fleet

So, I’ve already made a post talking about how I feel about certain ships in My Hero Academia, and another post about some of my other fandoms. Both posts got a lot of likes and reblogs, so I figured I’d talk about my ships from other fandoms. If this post also gets a lot of positive feedback, I’ll consider starting a second page to post my fan content for all of my fandoms, while still maintaining this one almost exclusively for My Hero Academia and Kiribaku specifically.

Klance (Keith x Lance) Voltron: Legendary Defender

I’m fully aware that this ship is probably not going to happen, but it’s really the only ship in the series that speaks to me. I will not lie, I am a big fan of dark and moody dating happy-go-lucky, and the rivals to friends to lovers element is just icing on the cake. It’s only further helped by Lance being Keith’s second-in-command. They help each other grow, and the trust that forms between them is cute and endearing. They also shared a major element to their characters. Both of them feel out of place, Keith because of his Galra heritage, and Lance because he doesn’t have a niche role.

Rabies/Rae x BB (Raven x Beast Boy) Teen Titans (2003)

While there wasn’t a lot of shipping fodder for these two in the 2003 iteration, the two are a canon couple in most versions of the teen titans, having been married in the comics (more than once, I think) so this is sort of a unique ship in that I ship it across every version of the two characters. Sporting a snarky moody goth and a lovable goofball, their dynamic was like that of an old married couple, or a moody teenager and her annoying little brother. Still, the two were good friends, and even though their personalities were polar opposites of each other, they had a lot of quiet, emotional moments together in the series. Whether you want to read them as friends or potential lovers, I think it’s hard to deny that there was a genuinely nice bond between the pair.

Garnet/Rupphire (Ruby x Sapphire) Steven Universe

As the show’s literal physical manifestation of love and a perfect relationship, it’s hard not to like the relationship between these two adorable lesbians. With the show sometimes being edited to remove the queer elements, it’s absolutely hysterical that they had the two get married in an episode very important to the plot, and put Ruby in the dress so that absolutely nobody could misinterpret her as a male. Editing it would only confuse viewers as to why everybody is in wedding attire, thus taking a very satisfying stance against censors and bigotry. Garnet also marks a first in children’s programming as the first same-sex wedding in a children’s animated show, at least as far as I’m aware.

Pearl x Mystery Girl Steven Unieverse

Although only featured in a single episode and having no dialogue, Mystery Girl (possibly named Sabina) is a very important element to Pearl’s character, being her first step toward moving on from Rose Quartz. There were fans that hoped that Mystery Girl would come back, but even if she doesn’t, she’s still important to Pearl’s character development.

Amedot (Amethyst x Peridot) Steven Universe

I know a lot of people prefer Lapidot, but frankly I find Lapis too selfish and cold-hearted to be ready for a relationship as she currently stands. I find Amethyst to be a better fit for Peridot, since they both share issues with their height. That, and the way the show frames them has romantic comedy tropes interwoven into their scenes. But even if they’re just friends, Amethyst’s approval means so much to Peridot.

Stevonnie (Steven Universe x Connie Maheswaren) Steven Universe

I’m not usually a fan of lead boy dates lead girl ships, as they tend to be very poorly done, and many feel forced, or are just boring and predictable. However, the bond between these two feels very genuine. They don’t feel like a lead boy and lead girl forced into a relationship at all. They come together very naturally, and the show takes its time to build their friendship up slowly. The show remembers that they’re kids first, friends second, jam buds third, and love interests last.

Tomstar (Tom Lucitor x Star Butterfly) Star Vs the Forces of Evil

Considering the show’s themes of monsters, racism, and not judging evil at face value, this ship serves as the most thematically poignant to the narrative that the show is setting up. It also makes Star a stronger parallel to her “evil” great great something grandmother, Eclipsa. Both are monster sympathizers with monster boyfriends. While the blood moon bonds complicate things, I see this ship as the most relevant to the themes and messages the show seems to want to send.

Tomco (Tom Lucitor x Marco Diaz) Star Vs the Forces of Evil

More of a joke/crack ship, I know it’s unlikely, but the entire episode of Friendenemies had romantic comedy written all over it. Between the literal in-universe break-up song to the show’s promotional art being inspired by dime store pulp romance novels fuel the fire that keeps this ship afloat.

Bumblebee/Bumbleby (Blake Belladonna x Yang Xiao Long) RWBY

Partners, teammates, and close friends, the ship really took off starting in season 2 during the episode “Burning the Candle”, as Blake spiraled into self-destructive habits due to obsessing over her problems. Nobody is able to get through to her until Yang comes in to talk to her. She doesn’t lecture her or beg her to stop. She instead forms a bridge of trust by first opening up about a similar situation she’s been in, and how she knows first hand that this sort of spiraling can only have negative impacts. They are shown to be parallels, as both girls are negatively effected by a loved one no longer in their life, and the trust issues that spring from that loved one’s actions. Yang was abandoned by her mother, a problem which she mentions Blake repeated. For Blake, it was the uncertainty of trusting someone’s character, and being afraid of someone slowly turning into someone else. She explicitly states in season 3 that her ex started off a nice guy, like Yang. The first time he hurt someone, there was a reason. There was always an excuse. Until eventually, she became the pardoner. The one excusing his actions. And, she expresses the fear that Yang could be following a similar path. Both girls have been hurt by someone in the past, and both girls are afraid of being hurt the same way again, and inadvertently hurt each other the same way as someone else has. It’s also known that RWBY characters tend to represent or be based on fairy tale characters. Yang is Goldilocks, and Blake is Beauty from Beauty and the Beast. However, based on the lyrics from Red Like Roses “Black the Beast descends from shadows, Yellow Beauty burns gold”, there seems to be an implication that Yang is the Beauty to Blake’s Beast. This is interestingly supported by Blake’s name. Blake is a Celtic name meaning both Black and White, and Belladonna literally means Beautiful Woman in Italian, but is also the name of a very poisonous plant often mistaken for the harmless blueberry. The duality of her name could be pointing to how she plays the dual role of both Beauty and Beast.

Seamonkeys (Sun Wukong x Neptune Vasilias) RWBY

A bit more of a crack ship, these two lovable idiots are far less likely to be canon, but since Sun is Yang’s main competition for Blake’s heart, I have no problem shipping him off elsewhere with his goofy best friend. Although they act more like usual best friends in the canon show, their relationship does have a much gayer tone in the less canon comedy show RWBY Chibi, where Neptune almost seems to act like a jealous clingy girlfriend a lot of the times. I doubt the ship would ever sail, but I mostly ship it because they’re cute together. Although, with season 6 just starting, I got the vibe that Sun was stepping aside to let Bumblebee sail uninhibited. Sun doesn’t really have a third popular ship, it’s just Black Sun and Seamonkeys, so this ship may be gaining validity in the future.

Gumlee (Marshall Lee x Prince Gumball) Adventure Time with Fiona and Cake

The male counterpart to Bubbline (Princess Bubblegum x Marceline), there’s no real difference between the two pairs other than their genders, and Gumball preferring baking while Bubblegum prefers science. Because they are effectively just gender-swapped clones of the canon ship, anything canonical between the girls is also technically canon with these two. It’s not that I don’t like Bubbline, but when given the choice between gay or lesbian versions of a couple, I’m going to be naturally inclined to lean toward the gay version.

Sasunaru/Narusasu (Sasuke Uchiha x Naruto Uzumaki) Naruto

Maybe there’s a cultural aspect I’m unaware of, but it’s a bit of a running gag in the Naruto fanbase at this point that Naruto is obsessed with Sasuke. So much so that he seems to care about him way beyond normal friendship. With how much these two obsess over one another, it’s no surprise why this became such a popular pairing. Their dynamic even dwarfed Hinata’s heartfelt confession of her love during the Pain Invasion Arc, because as soon as that ended, did Naruto go talk to Hinata? No, he immediately started thinking about Sasuke. Hinata definitely got the shaft in part II, which is a shame because I really loved her character.

Bob and Linda Belcher Bob’s Burgers

More of an honorable mention than a full on ship, I wanted to highlight them as one of adult animation’s only married couples that actually still like each other. In the wake of the popularity of the Simpsons, and the cementing of the genre with Family Guy, the stock dynamic of idiot husband and enraged but supportive wife became a recurring trope. Before long, every single animated sitcom-esque family fell into this very annoying cliche. So, finding a couple in adult animation that are not only married but still manage to show they love each other is amazing. Their marriage isn’t on the rocks, they find time to at least try and be romantic, and even when they have bets or are on opposing sides of something, the show never forgets that these two love each other at the end of the day.

Captain Swan (Killian “Hook” Jones x Emma Swan) Once Upon A Time

This relationship between Captain Hook and the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming might sound odd on paper, but this couple is by far one of the healthiest relationships in the series. Both Hook and Emma come from broken lives, and together build themselves up to something stronger. In a melodrama surrounding fairy tales, both characters are surprisingly grounded, realistic, and skeptical cynics, a very stark contrast from the usual wide-eyed lovey-dovey couples Disney is known for. Emma’s tendency to put up walls and Killian’s tendency to always put himself first are both slowly broken down over time as Killian tries to tear down Emma’s walls and get to know her while she works on building a foundation of trust between them. The pairing feels very organic, and they definitely feel like the most realistic couple in the series as they both take turns stumbling and working toward being good for each other.

Rumbelle (Rumplestiltskin x Belle) Once Upon A Time

In the early seasons, this couple was beautiful to watch. I truly loved their chemistry and dynamic, as both of them were given such strong characteristics without simplifying either of them. However, as the show went on, it started to lose that power. The couple started to feel toxic as Belle kept waiting for Rumple to change, and he kept on lying and lying. It even reached a stopping point. A perfect one. Rumple was redeemed. He was a good man again. He could be the man Belle deserved. But instead, he slipped right back into his old ways. It was then that I fell off the band wagon for this ship. I loved it once, until I got sick of watching him hurt her over and over.

Daenerys Targaryen x Khal Drogo Game of Thrones

Although together only for a short while, this power couple won audiences over very quickly, as Drogo’s gruff but passionate affection mixed with Danny’s growing confidence and rise to power made these two iconic.

Renly Baratheon x Ser Loras Tyrell Game of Thrones

Another short-lived relationship, the remarkable thing is that Renly was literally the only character vying for the throne with fully good intentions for the realm. He was concerned with the needs of the people, and was the only morally good candidate in the War of Five Kings. Sadly, the ydidn’t get much screen time, but they were still a strong couple.

Peraltiago (Jake Peralta x Amy Santiago) Brooklyn 99

A rare exception to the don’t force the leads to date rule, the show let them form a bond over time that went from a friendly childish rivalry to a friendly dating rivalry. While each character experiences change and growth, it is not at the expense of their personalities, and the progression feels like it was meant to happen.

All The Stars is a close runner up though because of how big the Black Panther movie is.

Tbh, I don’t really care for this category this year. I feel like there are so many other albums that are way more deserving of this award let alone a nomination. Again, I just think they gonna give it to a white artist. Kacey Musgraves won Album of the Year at the country awards for the same album so who knows, very possible she could win it again at the Grammys. Wouldn’t mind seeing Black Panther or H.E.R. take this one, though I think it is highly unlikely for H.E.R. since its rare for a Best New Artist nominee to also take Album of the Year.

If you haven’t realized by now, Childish Gambino is my favorite artist and has been since 2010 and honestly, objectively, when This is America dropped after that SNL performance, that shit was so important and was released at such a perfect time. The song is Gambino’s first number 1 single and knocked Drake out of the top spot after he spent 28 weeks at number 1. I’ve already said what I needed to say about the academy and Lady Gaga winning.
