Jamie Dornan: Actor pays tribute to late dad as he receives honorary degree from Queen’s
The star of The Tourist has come back to Northern Ireland to be honoured as an honorary graduate at the university his late father attended.
Co Down actor Jamie Dornan has been awarded a Doctorate for distinction in the arts at Queen’s University, Belfast.
The Holywood man is the recipient of two Irish Film and Television Awards and has also been nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe Award.
His father Professor Jim Dornan passed away aged 73 in 2021 after contracting Covid in Dubai, but Jamie could not see him because he was in Australia to film The Tourist.
The retired obstetrician and gynaecologist had considered a career in acting before turning to medicine, but he later had small parts in The Fall, in which Jamie played serial killer Paul Spector, and the third series of Marcella, starring Anna Friel.
Speaking at the Queen’s ceremony, Jamie said: “It’s a huge honour. My dad went to this university, there are pictures in my house of my dad wearing a similar robe. I’m very proud to be involved in this great university.”

Remember… my dad went to this university, there are pictures in my house of my dad wearing a similar robe. — Jamie Dornan, DUniv
"I leave you with this: We are led by our gut instincts, our intuition, our desires and fears, our scars and our dreams. And you will screw it up sometimes. So will I. And when I do, you will most likely read about on the internet. Anyway…hard things will happen to us. We will recover."
"It is here, where my first dream became a reality...I never imagined I’d write my first book or have a whisky business or set up a scholarship for fellow students. I'm willing you on, I want you all to succeed and I know you will. Dream big and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I cannot wait to see what you all achieve." - Sam Heughan
“I’m trying to tell you that losing things doesn’t just mean losing. A lot of the time, when we lose things, we gain things too.” - Dr. Taylor Alison Swift
Apparently there has been a rumor going around that my doctorates are fake. I can assure you that they are very real and that I earned them and that the people spreading these falsehoods are merely jealous of my success.
Saw Sam´s honorary doctorate. Found his speech good. But when he talked about is first thing at RCS, he mentioned that he remember his first girlfriend. Ok, I understand that he remember her because of that and that it was on RCS. But he really pointed out the word "girlfriend". What do you think about that? Is it so that it was a moment of missing her, like just for 2 seconds?
I don't think anything of it, Anon. He also talked about making pasta and said "pasta" louder than he said "girlfriend." He was just talking about all the "firsts" that young people have when they are in college. I don't see anything out of the ordinary...you may just be projecting your own feelings about things, Anon. 🤷♀️
