Hooded muffler knitting pattern
This free Ravelry knitting pattern for a hooded scarf by Pierrot will keep you warm in winter. The pattern's charted, so it's perfect if you struggle with written instructions (like me). If you've never used a pattern like this before, check out this guide on how to read Japanese knitting patterns by Twig & Horn.
The original pattern comes with cables and moss stitch decorations, but as the pattern's a chart you could easily substitute these stitches with whatever stitches you prefer as long as you stick to the same gauge.

Here's my own take on this project. I used different stitches because they match my personal style better than the original design does. I also made the scarf part shorter because I had a limited amount of yarn and wanted to have enough left over for a matching pair of mittens.
The hood's big enough to accommodate headphones, and the length's perfect to tuck into my coat.

Another interesting type of medieval headwear is open hood. As it shows from its name this hood has an opening on the front side. In historical fashion open hoods are mostly have short collar and belong to women costume. Of course in fantasy style you can use different designs as you want.
First pattern has wide hood so its front edge along the face could be bound inside out. At medieval illustrations we can see a lot of hoods like this in various colours. I've seen different interpretations of it in reenactment - mostly from one or two layers of wool and less with linen lining. These open hoods are cute and pretty, especially with a long tail.
Second type of open hoods has buttons on its collar. This way it can be more usable. Also buttons are goes as additional decoration. They can be made from metal, cloth or both of them. I like this type more because it's practical and can be weared in different ways.
Open hood can be a nice part of your costume, both pretty and cozy. Also it looks really good with additional layers of fancy headdresses made from linen or silk.
(by the way, blue open hood and the one with purple lining are available for purchase. you can find them in my shop or insta page)
