Pairings: Noah Sebastian x Reader
Warnings/Tropes: forced proximity, slight enemies to lovers, slow burn, smut, angst, fluff, mentions of death, and swearing.
Summary: Reader is the merch girl for Bad Omens. It wasn't what she wanted to do with her life but when her mother got sick with Alzheimer's, reader took a job where she could to help with the costs. She thought it would be a one-time gig but the longer she was on the road with them, the harder she fell for Noah Sebastian; even if he wanted nothing to do with her. She needed a miracle to save her mom and her future.
Author Note: I hope y'all don't hate me after this.

"So it's over?" I clutched my phone between my ear and shoulder as I carried in the bags of groceries into the house.
"Yes. He tried to fight your mothers will, but it clearly states that you keep the house. There's no way James can sell it without your permission."
I sighed while setting down the bags on the kitchen counter. "Thank you, Ryan. I appreciate all your help."
"No problem, Y/N. If you need anything else, call my office anytime."
Ending the call, I left my phone on the counter as I put away the food I bought, the setting sun forcing its rays through the glass windows. Even with the cool November weather, the heat of the sun-blasted against my back, warming my skin instantly. The house was quiet as I moved throughout it, picking up odd things that were scattered in random places and putting them back where they belonged. The phone call with the lawyer's office that had been helping me deal with situating my mother's estate and her will weigh heavy on my mind. I'd been working with them for the last couple of weeks and although they said that it was over, a part of me knew deep down that this thing with James was far from over.
After my mother's funeral a few weeks ago and the interactions with James, I immediately sought some legal help to make sure that there wasn't any kind of loophole that he could find to slip through. Thankfully, there were none and James ended up flying back home to Texas, leaving me alone.
Or so I thought.
It started at first as just weird feelings then it turned into the feeling of being watched anytime I was walking around the neighborhood or even inside my house. It got so intense that I ended up leaving the curtains closed twenty-four-seven. If that wasn't creepy enough, one morning I woke up and noticed that the back door was open just a crack. It scared me so bad because I remembered shutting and locking it. It's been about a week since the last weird incident and I decided it was all in my head. Originally I thought it was James but knowing he was back in Texas, I chalked it up to a crazed fan that found out where I lived.
Somehow pictures of me with the guys at my mother's funeral ended up online, especially ones of Noah's hand in mine. People already had their suspicions about the two of us but now the rumors were spreading like wildfire online. I did what I always did when I read something I didn't like; I ignored it.
Since the kiss we shared on his birthday, things between Noah and I were even more weird, in a good way. The only problem? It felt as if we were rushing back into things which is not what I wanted. So while Bad Omens were away playing a three-day festival a few hours away, I was using this time alone to think about things.
Noah offered me my job back, but I didn't accept it, not yet anyway. It was something I needed to think about. Although be it tempting, I also needed to think about where my life went from here. I didn't want to stay in this house much longer because the memories were too daunting and frankly; I wanted to forget about the times of taking care of my mom here. Her lies were etched into the walls and buried deep into the soil of the foundation. The thought of moving far away crossed my mind a few times, but it never was more than a thought. All the bad memories aside, there was a lot of good here that I couldn't bear the thought of leaving.
Before Noah left, we talked about some things that were said that night of our fight. He apologized profusely about bringing up my only fans page in front of everyone and comparing it to amateur porn. When in fact; it was something that Noah watched often. He said the real thing was better than the pictures or videos I posted.
I thought I would be angry that he saw me like that before the night in the storage closet but I wasn't. It extremely flattered me he thought of me like that.
When I told him I'd be stopping the page, he told me I didn't have too since we were kind of, sort of, dating, but I told him it was only to pay Lana's paychecks when she was taking care of my mother. Now, there was no need for the Only Fans page anymore. Noah wouldn't say it out loud, but I could tell he was relieved that I deleted the page.
I also had to tell him that Folio saw my nudes. Prior to how he acted in jealousy, Noah surprised me when he shrugged it off with a laugh.
"Damn, he got those for free? Do you know how much I had to pay for those?" He joked which earned a slap to his chest from me.
We hadn't kissed or done anything more since his birthday, much to the dismay of my aching pussy that begged for him. He never forced me for more of our relationship and I was thankful for that.
As I was returning downstairs with a large stack of photo albums in my arms, I heard my phone ringing from the kitchen and made it just in time to answer it.
"Hello?"
"Hi angel," Noah's deep voice echoed in my ear.
The corner of my mouth lifted into a smile. "Hey you. How's the festival?"
"Good, we just got back on the bus and should head back home soon. I wanted to call and check in since it's been awhile since we last talked."
It was true. I wished them all good luck at the festival before they left a few days ago. I didn't even talk to Folio, that's how much I was valuing this alone time. Of course, not wanting them to worry, I sent a text or two letting them know I was alive. Noah was understanding in letting me have all the time I needed to myself but he made sure I knew that once the festival was over, he'd be calling.
"You're leaving already? It's only the second night," I said.
"The schedule of the festival changed around and our sets already finished. We figured to head back home a day early."
I hummed. "Some girl back home waiting for you?"
"Yes. In fact, I plan on having her over at my place for a movie night."
"Oh, really now?" I raised a brow while opening up the photo albums. "Does she know about this?"
There was some loud voices on Noah's end before he yelled away from the receiver. "Assholes! I'm on the phone."
"Tell Y/N we say hi!"
Jolly.
"She's coming back to work, right? Because the pictures Davis got for our social media fucking suck."
Nick.
"Hey, fuck you man!"
Davis.
I chuckled while sitting on the stool at the counter, slowly flipping through the photo album. It was of my sixth birthday and seeing the pictures of my father with a large smile on his face as he handed me my birthday cake warmed my heart. I did this every night the last few weeks; looking though old memories in hopes to remember the good ones.
"Tell her to answer my text. It's important!"
Folio.
Rolling my eyes, I pulled my phone away from my ear to look at my most recent text from him.
The second we got the news that our set ended a day early, Noah damn near sprinted to the bus like someone lit a fire under his ass so he can call you. He's rushing us so we can get back home. I don't know how but you got that man wrapped around your finger.
My heart skipped a beat as I put the phone back to my ear just in time to ear Noah's sweet voice again.
"So about that movie night?"
"Depends," I chewed on my bottom lip.
"On?"
"Can it be just you and I? Maybe at my place?"
There was a long beat of silence on Noah's end. "You sure? I don't want to rush you into anything, angel."
"You're not, trust me. We've been taking things slow so this movie night could be the next step."
"I'll promise to keep my hands to myself."
I could almost imagine Noah crossing a finger over his chest.
Closing the photo album, I leaned back into the stool with a playful smirk on my face. "Maybe I don't want you too."
"Angel," Noah groaned. "As soon as I'm back home, I'm coming over. I don't care the time."
I giggled while making my way out of the kitchen and up the stairs to my room. By now the moon was casting its bright white glow on the old wooden floorboards and I was ready to turn in for the night.
"How long is the drive?" I asked.
Noah sighed. "It's about five hours."
Glancing at the clock on the wall of the hallway, I noticed it was about eight in the evening, meaning by the time he got home, it would be too late and I'd most likely be asleep.
"How about tomorrow night then?" I asked once I stepped foot in my room.
"I'll hold you to that."
We talked for a few more minutes before I reluctantly hung up, exhaustion pulling my body toward my bed.
Tumblr media
My nose tickled at the harsh smell as I turned over in bed, slumber still weighing heavy on my chest. But the smell intensified which woke me, eyes fluttering open. It was almost an earthy smell as it engulfed me and I sat up in bed with a start. The surrounding air was thick with dust and my vision was hazy as I looked around my room. Then I realized it wasn't my vision that was hazy, it was my room that was hazy. A thick cloud of smoke filled my room, and I traced it to the bottom of my closed door where I sucked in a sob; bright flames licked their way underneath the opening of the door and I scrambled out of bed towards the farthest side of the wall.
Fuck.
My house was on fire, and it was slowly reaching my bedroom.
"SHIT!" I cried when the flames now ran up my door, the heat immediately brushing across my face.
Did I leave a candle burning?
No, I haven't lit one in days.
Did I leave to stove on?
No, I ordered pizza for dinner.
And the fireplace hasn't been lit in years.
So how the fuck did the fire start?
My eyes glanced over to the phone on my nightstand but before I could reach for it, the flames reached it and I reared farther back into the farthest corner of my room away from the fire. Fear gripped me as I tried to scramble my brain on how to escape.
I couldn't leave my room without getting burned alive so the only way out was the window, but I was on the second story which was at least a 15-foot drop. There was a lattice I could slowly climb my way down but it would take time to make sure I didn't fall which time wasn't something I had much time of.
My throat felt raw and thick as I continued to breathe in the smoke the longer I stayed in my fetal position. I coughed as I slowly rose to my feet, ready to climb through the window when something caught the corner of my eye. On my dresser on the other side of the room was an array of pictures of my mother and I and also with my father. Then on my desk next to the dresser was my laptop which had more pictures; most of my time with Bad Omens.
Continuing to cough up black smoke, I rushed through the flames to grab two picture frames and as I was going to reach for my laptop, a flame brushed up from underneath the desk, touching the skin of my wrist and hand. I hissed in pain as I pulled my burned hand into my chest, tears mixing with the soot from the fire on my face.
My brain was screaming at me to leave because the fire would burn me alive in seconds, the sound of the flames and memories burning hurt my ears. So with one last look around the crumbling vision of what was once my bedroom, I hastily climbed out of the window with my burned hand clutching the pictures close to my chest. It was difficult to climb down the lattice with one hand and shaky legs, the amount of smoke I inhaled made my breathing labored and I was sure that I was seconds away from passing out.
Far off in the distance, I heard sirens and knew that in a matter of minutes, I would be saved, all I had to do was reach the safety of the ground below. But as I was about a few feet away from safety, I noticed the flames were burning hot and bright from the window just below my feet. Which meant I was trapped in between the two floors, barely hanging on to the lattice.
"Fuck," I sobbed while banging my head on the peeling wood.
"Angel!"
Choking out another cry, I peered over my shoulder to where I heard the desperate voice.
Noah was running up the long driveway up to my house, both Nicks' and Jolly right behind him.
My heart soared from the sight of them and for a moment, only a moment, I didn't think I was going to die.
"You need to jump!" Nick yelled up to me.
I quickly shook my head. "No way. It's too far of a drop and if one of you guys try to catch me, I'd hurt you!"
"You have too!" Jolly demanded.
Noah's frantic eyes searched every inch of the house until he pointed to the window a few feet to my left, one that had a balcony. "What room is that?"
"Uh," I closed my eyes to think of the layout of my house. "It's my mom's. There's a back staircase in her room that leads to the mudroom!"
"It seems like the fire hasn't reached it. You need to climb to that window and hoist yourself up onto the balcony to make your way down," Nick suggested.
"I can't!" I cried.
Folio's soft voice called up to me. "Yes you can, Y/N. There's no other way."
"No," I shook my head with not only fear but the pain from my burned hand. "I burned my hand pretty bad and I can't climb with it. I'm barley hanging on."
A scream crawled its way out of my throat when I slipped down the lattice a few inches, my grip faltering.
Noah's face was filled with so much worry it made my stomach sink to the pits of hell.
"Stay there, angel!" He called up to me as he began running. "I'm coming!"
"NO!"
Folio was too slow to stop Noah, who disappeared out of sight as he ran towards the side of the house that the fire hadn't reached yet. My eyelids felt heavy as I continued to cough up the smoke that my lungs inhaled and with every breath, I hissed in pain. It felt as if there was a vice grip around my insides making it harder to breathe and stay conscious.
"Y/N, stay with us. Noah's almost there," Jolly's voice sounded so far away.
I nodded, or I thought I did, because Nick's yells were all I heard before darkness finally had a grip on me just as my grip on the lattice slipped away, my body falling to the hard ground below.

Deja Vu ~ Russell Adler x Female Reader
{Author's Note} This was inspired by @alypink's recent Adler render where he's leaning against a muscle car AND HOO BOY that put tons of thoughts in my head about a younger Adler before he heads off to Vietnam. Reader in this story dated him before he went off to war and they got together again after the events of the Cold War game. I probably got some timeline stuff wrong but I did my research and tried to keep it consistent lol. A horrendous sinus infection has given me a short break from school as I start some medications to clear it up so that means more time for writing! Anyway, I hope y'all enjoy this! I've got plenty of ideas for a younger Adler x reader series so expect more in the future! And let me know if you'd like to be removed or added to the tag list🫶🏻 I don't know if I managed to include everyone that I wanted to so please let me know! AND YES I'm using a Robert Redford gif because they're basically the same person in my eyes LOL {Tag List} @littlemissclandestine @alypink @mctvsh @adlerboi @deadbranch @a-small-writer-in-a-big-world @ghostlythots @glitterypirateduck

Russell Adler x Female Reader

1965
“When are you leaving again?”
Adler sends you a glance through dark shades as you pass him a bucket full of water. He takes it easily, hefting it with little issue while you had struggled to lift it only moments ago.
“In a month,” he responds and splashes the bucket’s contents across the windshield of his car. “Higher ups are gettin’ worried about the increased communist presence in Vietnam so they’re sending in some troops. I’ll be going on behalf of the CIA to do some recon and see if we can figure out what’s happening over there.”
You knew that already. He’d told you half a dozen times before but he answered you anyway. He knew how worried you were about the threat of impending war, especially when he was being sent into the midst of it with little choice to refuse.
All you can manage is a nod as you focus on sponging down the window opposite him. He notices your silence and rounds the car, drying his palms on his already damp tank top.
“I’ll be fine, sweetheart,” he murmurs softly as he grasps your chin and guides your face to look at him. You blink back tears and he wipes away the few that manage to escape with gentle thumbs.
“Just gotta make sure the Soviets aren’t meddling in things,” he continues. “It shouldn’t take long.”
You nod as he caresses the curves of your cheeks. “I just want you to be careful.”
And come back alive, you think to yourself. Come back to me.
He leans to press a kiss to the crown of your head. “I will. Promise.”
His lips meet yours in a tender kiss, one that makes you smile and clears the mist from your eyes.
“Now, help me finish cleaning this thing before Sims gets here. He needs to see this baby in all her glory.”
You laugh, feeling your heart lighten as Russ turns up the radio. He bobs his head to The Beach Boys song flowing through the speakers and you promise yourself to commit this moment to memory. The glint of his shades in the sunlight, the shimmer of golden hair as he pushes it off his forehead, the movement of his arms and back as he leans over the hood of his car. The image is imprinted in your mind’s eye for years to come.
~ ~ ~
1982
Adler has changed, though your memories of him have not. He’s still stubborn as a mule with an envy-inducing sense of style and a love for muscle cars. He’s older now, quieter and less open, scarred both physically and mentally after his time in Vietnam. His most recent escapade involved a former Soviet agent who he refuses to talk about so you don’t push the topic. You’re just happy he’s come back to you.
“You gonna keep staring or help me clean this thing?” Russ says with a slight smile. His shades reflect the sun the same way they did all those years ago and you hurry to his side, upping the radio’s volume on the way.
Russ likes to talk about cars and so you let him, enjoying the sound of his voice as he guides you through the inner workings of the machinery before you. He's gentle and careful with his movements, and you notice the serenity in his features. It was one of the few times he was able to relax, a brief moment where he didn't carry the world on his shoulders. You know he's not perfect, far from it, but he deserves this temporary peace and you're thankful that you're present to enjoy it with him.
“Do you know that I love you?” you ask suddenly. The comment makes Russ pause in his work, gaze lifting to yours as he straightens.
"That so?"
You giggle. "You're supposed to say it back, you know," you tease, fully aware of his tendency to play coy with this sort of thing.
He brushes stray strands of hair from your face, the pads of his fingers delicately tracing your features. He was hesitant to touch you these days, fearing you'd be disgusted by his calloused hands, but you made it a point to remind him that such things were a sign that he had survived and kept his promise to you, even if it had taken longer than either of you had anticipated.
"I love you, too," he murmurs, his voice a low whisper, as if he were afraid to release the phrase into the world where it could be taken from him.
You grin and lean to press a kiss to his scarred cheek, hearing his contented sigh as his arms settle around your waist. You promise to commit this moment to memory, just as you had countless times before, adding it to the complicated collection of images and sensations that made up Russell Adler.

"You know y/n he isn't always like this," Lyle muttered while senselessly scrolling through his datapad.
"He can take great care of you when you are his teammate. Sure, he can be harsh, well almost brutal, but he's a good man. A great soldier too."
"Sure thing"  you answer him slowly nodding along to his rambling of the last few minutes. After what happened at the last meeting he had been all around you, being a total counterpart to Quarritch's menacing aura.
In his way, you thought, he probably tried to apologize.
He truly was a bit like a ray of sunshine in the dark gray environment of the new RDA home base. Although you knew that the team had been out of the compound a few times there was never a need for you to go with them.
Spending your days in the clean and disinfected hallways of the RDA had maybe even made you a bit more compliant to Lyle's attempt at swaying you.
" You know doc. If you wanted you could also come with us. I mean it's your job to document all our little adventures, why not see them live ?" He smiled as he finally put down his datapad and now just cheekily stared at you.
"Or at least I could show you around. It doesn't have to be the whole team. Or are you scared ?"
"No Lyle, I'm not scared. I just have a lot to do right now. And it's not like you're helping me anyway."  You answered trying to sound uninterested but in truth, the idea to visit the lush jungles of Pandora already gave you goosebumps. Even more together with Lyle.
"Ay. Don't pretend like you wouldn't enjoy it. I can see you smile. Even if it's true with your mysterious load of work. Don't you need to do a more in-depth report on my body instead of always moping around the Lt. ?"
You didn't even get a second to answer as the doors to your laboratory burst open and Zdinarsk entered with her usually energetic character.
"Well, aren't you two a bitter-sweet couple? Seeing this would make the Lt. more than happy! "
"Ah shut your mouth Z-Dog. That's none of your or the Lt. Business. The doc and I just wanted to start a little surveillance tour of the jungle Didn't we? "
"You know what" you answered slightly annoyed by Zdinarsk's usual games. " I would like that. And while you're at it. I wouldn't even mind you telling the Lt. since he doesn't even bother to show up here anyway."
Very proud of yourself you manage to grasp Lyle's hand and promptly leave your office with him following you on foot. "Oh not so quick little y/n I didn't expect this kind of motivation with you. Just give me a few seconds and we'll meet back here again." Lyle laughs at you seemingly also very proud of himself with his tail swinging happily from side to side.
While Lyle quickly storms off you brush a bit of invisible dust off your coat and look around you. Surely you shouldn't keep this old thing while going out into one of the most dangerous places known to man. Dutyfull you make your way to your locker and squeeze yourself into one of the new RDA-issued body suits. A bit too tight for your taste but seeing as you rarely went outside anyway it shouldn't be much of a problem.
You manage to take your eyes off your image in the mirror next to you as you hear footsteps behind you. Turning around you freeze as you stand eye to eye with Lt. Quarritch. Again standing just a bit too close to you and almost undressing yourself with his eyes.
" Have you seen Zdinarsk? " he harshly spits out.
"N..No." you stutter, suddenly feeling vacuumed inside your suite.
"Great." He says abruptly turning around just to look at you again after a few steps with his cold eyes.
" Not bad a suit like this. Almost makes you look like a soldier."
After this you were standing there in the hallway, frozen in place not even moving a muscle.
" God bless me. I must have done something really good in my last life to deserve this stunning scientist on my team" Lyle shouts out loud as he finally arrives for you.
Again, before you can even answer he just lifts you like it's nothing. You just manage to mutter some incoherent sounds of surprise as you turn around on his arms.
Just managing to take one last look over his shoulder you see Quaritch again leaving your office, Zdinarsk behind him. His eyes pierce you even deeper than before. But not only you, it seemed that one of his rage filled looks even hit his most trusted friend and second in charge.

Sneak Peek!
excerpt of Threadbare, Part Three a Steve Rogers x fashion designer!Reader tale
Tumblr media
Warnings: none. WC 552
Summary: Steve hopes to see you by going to your atélier.
Tumblr media
Steve rolls the garment bag he brought off his shoulder and does not take an extra deep breath right before pulling open the door. It’s a normal breath. He’s fine. Fine.
Again, as several other times before, you’re nowhere to be seen.
“Oh my god,” your fourth assistant squeaks from behind the counter.
He knows his name. They know each other’s names—clearly—but have never met.
The young man stands taller. “Oh…my god. Hell-oh.”
Steve…is not sure whether the once-over your employee gives him is flattering or objectifying but rallies to get to his point.
“You must be Byron,” Steve tries casually, suppressing the awkward smirk rising with gentle heat to his cheeks. “I was wondering if the lady of the house was in to return this.”
Steve’s glad he has the jacket as a prop, something to do with his hands as he nervously glances toward the upstairs where he knows you live anyway. You’re here. He knows it. You’re working, and Steve doesn’t want to interrupt you. He has no other options, or at least, no other options that don’t make him feel a bit creepy.
“‘Fraid not, sir. But—“ Byron gathers his wits more admirably than Steve seems to be “—I’m sure I can help with anything you require, Mr. America.”
“Just Steve is fine,” he smiles back. Steve scans the open fitting rooms for Dominica or any of the others he has a rapport with, but no such luck. “And just the jacket.”
“What seems to be the problem with it?”
“Oh, no, it’s not mine. I was just standing in for a fitting when I got called away and...accidentally took it.”
Byron eyes Steve suspiciously. “You…you stood in…for the fit of another client’s jacket? Another client that…looks like you?”
Steve rolls his shoulders in discomfort. “She asked me to,” he defends lamely.
Byron keeps looking at him as if Steve’s grown an extra head instead of just a head taller than his original stature.
“Ok,” your assistant shrugs, “let’s see who the marker is for.”
Steve shoves the hanging bag in Byron’s outstretched hand, nervous again. He shouldn’t have come. This was a bad idea.
Deftly, clearly recalling a move he’s executed thousands upon thousands of times, Byron unzips the bag, tucks the opening under the shoulders of the jacket, runs his hand down the left side seam, and flips up the corner to peek at the lining.
Steve sees a glint of metallic he never noticed.
“Remind me of your middle name, Mist—sorry, Captain Rogers.”
“It’s Grant,” Steve blurts without thought. “Why?”
“This is your jacket, sir, down to the threads.” Byron smiles, a glistening white band of teeth bared for the enjoyment of all, and gleefully spins the garment around to show a delicately stitched ’S G R’ in silver against the deep purple.
Steve’s cheeks are on fire.
“But…” he stammers. “That’s not…” Steve hunches over the counter as if it will settle a bet his mind and heart are arguing.
You asked about the color…and he said he loved it.
You shyly asked if he’d spare the time to help you…and he jumped at the chance.
You made him a custom jacket and tricked him into having it fitted.
Steven Grant Rogers: Idiot.

part 2
part 3
part 4
epilogue
• • •
Your mind was buzzing from all the commotion, the last notes of the show still echoing deep in your head. The high of seeing your favorite band live for the first time still surging through you as you watched everyone leave the pit, crushing beer cans and plastic cups beneath their feet as they funneled out of the venue. You choose to stay back a minute, letting yourself process it all, slumped against the barricade as you go through the numerous pictures you managed to capture on your phone.
Your mind was stuck on the way the guitarist kept his eyes on yours practically the whole show. You couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to be that cherry red guitar, pressed against him as his fingers absolutely destroyed you. You also couldn’t help but imagine that he was thinking about it, too with the number of times he came right up to your edge of the stage. The prolonged eye contact between the two of you throughout the show was surely undeniable to anyone who was paying enough attention.
Once the majority of the pit had cleared out, you forced yourself off the metal railing right as a hand came up to your shoulder. Startled, you whip your head around to see the bassist towering over you.
“Hi! Sorry, um, glad you haven’t left yet. My brother has some questions about how you do your hair,” gesturing towards your curls. “Also my other brother is a little bit in love with you. Anyways, do you wanna come backstage with me for a hot sec?”
Your face is completely blank, not knowing if you were stuck in some post-show hallucination or if a Kiszka brother was genuinely, for real, asking you to come backstage with him.
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t even introduce myself, I’m Sam,” he says, pushing a hand towards you.
“I’m well aware,” you manage to spill out, your mind completely wiped as you forget your name and practically how to speak before taking his hand in yours.
“Well it's very nice to meet you ‘I’m Well Aware,’ do you want to come backstage or no?”
“Sorry, I’m just a little bit in shock hold on. I’m y/n,” you tell him with a soft smile, appreciating his humor as your brain tried to wrap itself around the opportunity being presented to you in that exact moment. “And yes, I would love to come tell Josh how he, too can get these curls,” throwing your head back slightly to shake your hair back in an attempt to show them off.
“Amazing! do you need a—“ you’re already hoisting yourself up on the edge of the barricade before he can finish, swinging your legs over and landing with a solid thud on the other side. “Okay, so you don’t need a hand apparently. Anyways, this way!” He turns from you dramatically to lead you both along the front of the stage, stopping to say hi to the couple of fans who were left strung along the railing before finally leading you into the dim corridor off to the side of the venue
“So Jake’s in love with me already, huh? Guess all that eye contact wasn’t for nothing,” you quip, Sam throwing his head back to laugh at your comment.
“Oh so it was that obvious from the stage that he was staring you down all night? God, he has no sense of subtlety when a pretty girl is involved. Don’t tell him I told you that, though.”
You start to feel a bit flustered at the thought of meeting Jake actually for real after the way you dreamed about him throughout the entire show. You never thought it would actually happen so you gave into your little fantasies as he sauntered back and forth across the stage all night, never thinking you’d have to look this man in the eyes and hold any sort of conversation with him without letting yourself fall to his feet in utter desperation.
You and Sam both enter the dim green room, Josh noticing you before anyone else. “Yes! You found her! You brought us the girl!” he announces excitedly, the drinks in both his hands sloshing out as he raises them in excitement. “Here, a drink for the girl of the hour!” he announces as he stretches out his arm to hand you a half-filled drink, which you take from him graciously. “Does the girl have a name?”
“The girl’s name is y/n!” you respond, matching his energy. Your eyes start to focus in the soft light, landing on Jake still in his stage outfit—sans jacket. You can’t help but take note of the smooth landscape of his torso, suddenly desperate to lay your hands all across it. You also can’t help but notice the way his eyes stick to you like glue with a longing stare spread across his face, nearly spellbound to your mere presence in the same room as him.
The sound of Josh’s voice suddenly pulls you out of your own delirium, “so I don’t know if you heard, but I have some questions about your hair. Also Jakey here has a question about your relationship status. He may or may not be in love with you.”
You watch in amusement as Jake abruptly pulls his eyes from you, lunging towards Josh behind the makeshift bar. “I swear to god, Josh, I’m gonna make you regret being alive come HERE!”
You appreciate the distraction as your cheeks flare, fully settling into the idea that Jake Kiszka himself looked ready and willing to let you drag him anywhere and everywhere you pleased that night—and maybe forever if you were lucky.
Danny leans over you to comment on the commotion, snapping you out of your thoughts. “I have 5 bucks on Jake.”
“You’re on,” you quip back, “it seems like Josh already has enough liquor in him to win this one.” The flare in your cheeks subsides as you give into the friendly comfort Danny offers you in that moment.
“You’re both wrong, actually. And you’re both gonna owe me five bucks,” Sam says from your other side before diving headfirst into the scrimmage before you, latching himself onto Josh’s back as the three of them fall on the floor together.
Of course, you already know his name, but you let Danny introduce himself anyways as the noise of the Kiszka’s brawl grows louder.
“So is this, like, and every night occurrence?”
“Unfortunately, it is. I swear to god I’m never having kids if it's anything like touring with these three.”
You down the concoction Josh created for you while watching the scene in front of you unfold, none of them really making any progress in terms of “winning.”
Sam is the first to stand back up, ready to announce his victory before Jake pulls him back to the ground and stands up himself. His hand moves to run through his frazzled mess of hair, slender fingers pulling each and every strand back into perfect place around his face before advancing towards you.
“Let me just start by clarifying I’m not in love with you. I simply told them there was a pretty girl in the front row and I would very maybe, hypothetically be interested in her. I didn’t expect Josh to send anyone out to actually find you.” His cheeks were already red from rolling around on the floor, but you could have sworn they turned a shade deeper as his eyes locked back on yours. “I’m glad he did, though.”
“Well, me too. I didn’t realize there was an after show so I’m glad someone found me to witness this mess.” Your cheeks were on fire as you pray to whatever god that no one could tell in the dim light, trying your best to come off cool and collected.
“I’m Jake, by the way,” he responds with a soft smile. “We were thinking about heading into the city for the night if you wanna tag along….” His eyes look like he’s ready to break down and plead with you to come with them, a hint of desperation laced through his words. Your grip on the empty plastic cup in your hand suddenly tightens, forcing an audible crinkle as your heart swells at the thought of actually spending a night with this beautiful boy.
You try your best not to sound too eager with your response, but it’s hard to hide as your words slip out of your mouth before you have time to think. “Actually I’m driving back into the city after this anyways. There’s a ton of bars in my neighborhood if you guys wanna cram yourselves into my car?” You realize too late that your offer is rather pathetic. Surely they had a much nicer way to get to the city, why the fuck would they be interested in cramming into a strange girl’s car? “You can also crash at my place if you guys need. I have a lot of space in the living room,” you add in an attempt to add value to your offer.
To your surprise, Josh is the first one to respond with an eager grin, “Wait, yeah let us come back with you, we’re very fun. I promise we won’t fight in your car.”
“Oh, I had no concerns about fun after the last five minutes I’ve spent with the four of you.”
Your fate is decided at that moment, the promise of an endlessly entertaining night ahead setting into motion.
• • • • • • • • •
The five of you pile into your car, Jake up front with you as the others shove themselves into the backseat.
“You guys can have aux privileges, but you have exactly ONE fuck up before I’m taking it back and we’re all listening to Wonderwall on repeat all the way back to the city. And you WILL be getting a front-row show from yours truly.”
You unlock your phone and pull up your music before handing it over to Jake. “Honestly I’d love to see it, we’re actually looking for a replacement for Josh right now so give us your best shot.”
Josh reaches up between the two of you to rip the phone from Jake’s hand before he can queue anything up.
“One, rude of you to kick your only twin out of the band for some girl you literally just met. And two, when have you ever been dubbed DJ? No one likes your music, Jake.” Your phone moves between the hands of everyone in the car as you pull out of the lot, your heart nearly beating out of your chest with unflinching exhilaration having gotten your favorite band into your very own car.
You pull onto the freeway as they all fight to show you their favorite songs, everyone singing and screaming as you try to keep your eyes on the road without completely cracking up at the sight of it all. You join in for the handful of songs you know, a smile plastered across your face as you speed through empty lanes back towards the city.
Jake moves his hand into yours as it rests on the center console, brushing his fingers back and forth through your palm and up your wrist for a while before finally letting it settle, fingers intertwining in yours. You let your fingers wrap back around his, a knowing gesture to the mutual desire you were nearly positive existed between the two of you throughout the entire show.
The skyline of the city finally makes itself clear as you press down further on the gas, desperate to park your car and put some alcohol in you before working up any amount of courage to pull Jake back to your apartment. Every time you steal a glance at him, he looks like he’s ready to spill out some proclamation of love for you, his eyes still glued to you the same way as when you found him backstage.
Half of you swore you were making it all up. The looks he sent towards you throughout the show could have been for any other pretty girl around you in the crowd—of which there were many. But the feeling of his hand intertwined in yours for the duration of the drive said otherwise. You knew there was something legitimate between you and you knew you couldn’t leave him before you did something about it.
You pull your car into the only spot left on your street before separating yourself from Jake’s delicate grasp, pulling your keys out of the ignition and throwing your stuff into your bag in a haphazard rush.
“Welcome to the big city!” you announce, the boys all cheering with comical praise before ambling out of the car into the crisp nighttime air with faulty legs from the hour drive. You let the anticipation of the night linger in your chest as you keep your eyes on Jake, both of you promptly moving back together from either side of the car. Your hands come back together like magnets separated for too long before you lead the way towards your favorite little dive bar, eager at the idea of what was left to come from your night with the boy wrapped up in your hand and in your heart.

Part 1: Christmas Day and the day after Christmas
The name for Christmas comes from the shortening of “Christ’s Mass,” a traditionally Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ to the Virgin Mary and Joseph in a manger in Bethlehem. Although the exact date of his birthday is unknown, around the fourth century the Catholic church fixed the date of this celebration to be December 25th. Other religions and belief systems have similar celebrations around the same time, such as the Winter Solstice, or Midwinter. Celebrations include a mixture of pre-Christian, Christian, and non-secular traditions, such as gift giving, completing an Advent Calendar or Advent Wreath, Christmas music, church services, a special meal with family and loved ones, Christmas trees, lights, nativity scenes, and Santa Claus to name a few.
The day after Christmas, known as Boxing Day in some European countries, is traditionally known as a shopping holiday. In America, this is typically the day when people start to return any unwanted Christmas gifts, stock up for next Christmas on items that are marked down on sale, or see friends that they hadn’t been able to see before Christmas.

December 21, 2021
“One fifteen means fifteen minutes before I have to clock in. Fifteen minutes before a twelve-hour shift that I’m not ready for and don’t have enough caffeine for,” Anne muttered to herself, staring at her reflection through her car's rearview mirror. “But, fifteen minutes before getting to do something that I thankfully love, something that I enjoy doing.” No matter how long the shift in front of her, Anne had developed a habit of giving herself a pep talk before she got out of her car. “Whatever happens, you’ve helped someone.”
The last part wasn’t always true, knowing that there was the possibility that something could go wrong that she and the other nurses and doctors wouldn’t be able to fix. Lying to herself that everything was going to be ok was the only want to convince herself to go into the hospital every day. Finally mustering up enough courage to get out of her car, she grabs her bag from the backseat, heading in for yet another long day right before the Christmas holiday.
The maternity ward where Anne worked never ceased to be hectic, the miracle of life happening at least once an hour. No matter how much Anne had studied in nursing school, nothing could have prepared her for the stress that could come from the job, the long hours, the potential for something so right to turn so wrong in a minute, the way nothing can go planned since the baby dictated all, the mess that comes with every birth, or the joy that results from a former patient sending her the occasional picture of a baby she helped deliver as they’re growing up.
“Hey, Tyson, come on!” comes from inside the open doors of the building, Anne not paying attention to who it was coming from, causing her to collide with a stranger, spilling her much-needed coffee all over the both of them.
“Shit,” she says, not looking up from the brown splatter on what should be mint green scrubs. “I am so sorry.”
Standing in front of her was a curly-haired boy, about her age, wearing what she was sure was a Colorado hockey jersey. Beyond that, she had no idea. “No, no, it’s my fault. I wasn’t looking where I was going. Let me buy you another,” he offers, ignoring the persistent calls from his friends to hurry up.
Anne checks her watch: 1:19. “It’s ok. I don’t really have the time, I have to clock in in eleven minutes, and knowing the cafeteria or the vending machines, it would take a lot longer,” she says, trying to get by him. Before he can protest, she gets to the elevator that would bring her to her floor, thankful that it was ready to get her there without her having to wait. The doors start to close, only to be stopped by a hand stuck through them, the curly-haired boy with the coffee stain down the front of him getting on the elevator with her. Anne gives him a confused look, begging him to explain why he was trying to make her late for her shift.
“If you aren’t going to let me buy you one now to make up for it, at least let me see where you work so I can drop one off for you.”
Anne rolls her eyes, unamused by the man in front of her as he attempts to flirt with her. “That would be nice, but the chances of me getting it before it goes cold are slim to none, so you need to suggest something else if you really want to buy me a coffee.”
“Let me get your number so I can buy you one when you aren’t working?” he asks, reaching into his pocket to pull out his phone. 1:25. “I’m Tyson, by the way.”
The elevator dings, signaling that they were on Anne’s floor, opening the door to nurses and doctors running around, expectant fathers who were probably kicked out of the delivery room for making the mom too nervous pacing the halls, grandparents trying to control younger children who had little to no idea what was going on as they waited in the strange building. Anne walks to the backroom to drop her stuff off and clock in, typing her information into the stranger’s phone as he followed her like a puppy, his friend’s texts coming across the top of his screen asking where he went so they could leave.
“I’m Anne, and I’ve got to go,” she tells him, handing back his phone. There was no way he was going to text her, and it’s not like the coffee was that big of a deal to him. She could go to the vending machine down the hall and grab one during her break, or have someone else on their break do it for her if she needed it sooner.
“Can’t wait for our coffee date, Anne,” he says, winking at her before shoving his hands in his pockets and sauntering back down the hallway.
“Who is he?” her coworker, Jess asked, popping up out of nowhere. “He’s hot.”
“In more ways than one, apparently,” Anne jokes, “he’s also wearing my hot coffee on his shirt.”
“You didn’t,” Jess scolds her, turning her around to see the coffee that was spilled down Anne’s own outfit, knowing Anne’s tendency to be a little absent-minded as she gets wrapped up in her own thoughts. “Anne, you did.”
“Not on purpose!”
“DeFormicola?” Anne’s supervisor, Jackson, pops his head into the room just as she was clocking in, “We need you in room 414.”
“Saved by the bell,” Anne teases, walking down the hall to where all the noise was coming from, trying to throw on the appropriate clothing before she went into the room, struggling to get the gloves on as she entered.
“Ok, Erin, we’re going to need you to push,” one of the doctors says, Anne standing behind him as she watched the baby’s head crowning.
This was her favorite part of the job, helping the mother stay calm and trying to make sure that despite the child coming out of her, she was as comfortable as possible. Normally, she would be with the mom as soon as she came in, Erin clearly nervous as to what was going on. They had to be first-time parents, the dad going back and forth to Erin’s side and behind the doctor, looking mortified each time and clearly regretting what he was seeing.
“It’s a boy!” the doctor says, handing the new baby to a breathless Erin.
“A boy! A boy!” the dad yells, going out to the hallway, Erin clearly unamused by whatever antics he was going about.
“Don’t worry, he’s not the first one to do that,” Anne reassures her, knowing that something like that would happen at least five more times during her shift, hearing the father’s voice repeating the phrase. “I’m going to get him cleaned up and then get him right back to you, ok?” Anne asks, reaching for the baby as everyone else around her tries to clean everything else up.
“Be careful with him,” Erin warns, not meaning anything bad by it. She was definitely a first time mother.
“I will be,” Anne tells her, feeling her phone vibrate in her pocket as she does. “So you have a name picked out yet?”
“We were thinking Matthew.”
Anne turns her head, smiling at Erin. “That’s a good name. My older brother is named Matthew.”
Erin smiles at her, the father finally coming back in, clearly overjoyed by the birth of their new baby. Anne hands him back to his parents, Matthew screaming his head off as they get wheeled into another room.
Anne goes over to the desk, sitting down where she was supposed to be for the start of her shift to do paperwork, but the uncertainty in the hour by hour of the schedule was not surprising. She pulls out her phone, ‘Maybe: Tyson’ coming up across her screen.
“He’s already texting me,” she alerts Jess whose head whips away from her computer to look over Anne’s shoulder at what message the mystery man could have sent her.
“He’s horny.”
“Jessica!” she squeals, wishing she was more shocked by what her friend had said. “Why is that always your first reaction to a boy sending a message?”
She shrugs, swiveling back to her own computer, “I’m normally right. What’s he saying?”
“He wants to know when he can buy me coffee.”
“Horny.”
“Enough.”
“You should date him.”
Anne turns to her, clearly unamused by Jess’s need to continue the conversation. “I don’t have to date anyone.”
Jess lets out a long sigh, Anne knowing that she was rolling her eyes. “I’m not saying you have to, I’m saying you should.”
“Ok, I don’t want to date anyone.”
“Oh, come on Anne,” Jess says, getting up and plopping herself on the desk in front of Anne, fiddling with the wire connecting the mouse to the rest of the computer. “You work in a maternity ward where people become parents every day, and you haven’t even thought of finding a man?”
“You don’t have a point,” Anne tells her, not making eye contact with her.
“My point,” Jess says, leaning over to block Anne’s view of her computer screen, “is that you can’t be single forever.”
“Says who?”
“Didn’t you tell me that you were named after the patron saint of the town your grandmothers were from?”
Anne rolls her eyes, knowing where this was going. It was going in the same direction that this conversation always went in when she had it with her mom every single holiday. “All four of us are named after the patron saints of the towns our grandparents are from.”
“St. Anne is the patron saint of child care, grandparents and mothers.”
“She’s also that patron saint of unmarried women, so your argument is invalid, as usual.”
Jess takes in a breath to say something, cut off by Jackson calling for Jess to go into one of the delivery rooms. “Just don’t say no because you think you have to be single,” she advises as she walks away.
Anne leans back in the chair, rubbing her hands over her face. “This is how Christmas is going to go, isn’t it?” she asks herself.
=============
December 25, 2021
The number of cars lining her parent's driveway meant that she was one of the last ones there, but knowing her aunts and uncles, she wasn’t the last one there. Her parents were the ones who did Christmas Day for her dad’s family, Christmas Eve being the anniversary of her mom’s mom’s death, and, on top of that, Teresa doesn’t talk to her family over some argument and grudge being held over their parent's house.
Scanning the cars, she didn’t see the one belonging to her brother Matthew, or his wife, Stephanie. “I’ll just leave Harper’s gifts in the car,” Anne mutters to herself, trying to juggle as many gifts as she could while also balancing the box of pastries her mom asked her to pick up for dessert.
Without a free hand to open the door, Anne did everything she could to ring the doorbell with her elbow, praying that someone would come to open the door before she dropped anything.
Her younger brother, Sebastian, opens the door, a disappointed look on his face. “What the fuck is all this for?” he asks, taking some of the bags from her arms to lighten her load.
“Merry Christmas to you, too,” she remarks, “Yours is still in my car if you’re wondering.”
“Did you have to get gifts for everyone?” he asks, Anne greeting her aunts and uncles on the way to the tree to put everything down for later.
“Well, it’s Hazel’s first Christmas," she explains, referencing their sister's youngest daughter, "So getting her something and not getting the other children something seemed wrong, and then Jessica took me shopping and kept saying things like ‘oh this would be perfect for Lucy,’ or ‘oh don’t have you an aunt who likes mystery novels?’ And everything went downhill from there.”
Sebby groans, walking with Anne back out to her car to retrieve the rest of the gifts, Anne still holding the box of pastries since they hadn’t made it to the kitchen yet. “Please tell me you didn’t get Aunt Lisa that Agatha Christie illustrated novel that the bookstore was selling.”
“Please tell me you didn’t get Aunt Lisa that Agatha Christie illustrated novel the bookstore was selling,” Anne laughs, Sebby nodding his head. “I got a gift receipt.”
“What did you end up getting Matthew?” he asks her. Anne had texted Sebby in panic on Black Friday, coming home from a day of shopping with Lucy that left her without a gift for Lucy’s twin brother.
Grabbing the rest of the gifts and handing them to Sebby, she closes the door to her car and starts to go back inside. “I found this ‘make your own wine’ kit that I think he would like. That way Steph doesn’t have to listen to him complaining about how the stuff she drinks is ‘too sweet.’”
“What about for me?” Sebby asks, nudging Anne with his elbow as they arrange the rest of the gifts in the already mountainous pile under the tree.
“Oh, I knew there was someone I forgot,” she says sarcastically, Sebby ripping the bow off one of her carefully wrapped presents and throwing it at her. “Ok, now I’m never getting you a gift again.”
Sebby laughs, helping his older sister off the ground. The two of them wander into the kitchen, slipping in unnoticed due to the sheer number of family members and noise that was filling the room. “Aunt Anne! Aunt Anne!” Harper and Skylar squeal in unison when her nieces spot her, hoping that either she or Sebby had grabbed Harper, Matthew, and Stephanie’s gifts. She didn’t think there was anything left in her trunk.
“Hey there, fireflies,” Anne greets them, bending down as they both kiss her on the cheek. “Guess what? Santa stopped by my place and left some gifts for you, but he made me promise that you two were really good today if you want to open them after dessert, ok?”
The two girls nod excitedly, bouncing up and down at Anne’s words. To still be young and believe in Santa, that must be nice.
“Hey, ma,” Anne finally finds her mother, putting down the box of pastries in front of her and kissing her on the cheek. “Upstairs or downstairs fridge?”
“It goes downstairs. Come on, I have someone I want you to meet,” her mother says, dragging you away from your aunts that had aggregated around her. They all had excited looks on their faces, something that instantly worried Anne as she followed her mother down the stairs with the box. She could hear Matthew and Lucy’s voices, knowing that her brother and sister’s wife and husband had to be down there with them, too. “Matthew told me about this friend of his who couldn’t make it home for Christmas,” her mother whispers before she got to the last step.
“Mom, no,” Anne says, already knowing where this was heading. “I told you: I don’t need a boyfriend.”
“But I don’t have a grandson,” her mom whines, shaking Anne’s hand in her own against her chest.
“How is that my fault?”
“If you just find a nice boy, and get married, I just know you’re going to be my child that has a boy.”
“Oh my god,” Anne groans, pushing past her to get to the fridge.
Teresa pulls Anne over to the couches where her siblings were, Lucy sitting on one with her feet in Jason’s lap, Jason’s hand lazily rubbing his wife’s shins. Matthew was on the other, Stephanie nuzzled against his shoulder, all four of them with a glass of wine and three bottles open. Next to Matthew was a guy sitting there awkwardly, straightening his back when he saw you while Sebby tried to contain his laughter as he sat on the floor. “Jeremy, this is my youngest daughter, Anne. Anne, this is Jeremy,” she introduces the two of them before running up the stairs.
“I do have a girlfriend, actually,” Jeremy says, “So I’m sorry.”
Anne and her siblings burst out laughing, Lucy pouring her sister a glass of wine. “If only this were the first time Ma tried to set Anne up with a guy who was seeing someone.”
“I even tried to tell her that but she didn’t listen,” Matthew adds. “It’s better than when she tried to set you up with Adam,” he says, referencing Lucy’s partner at their optometry practice.
“Yeah, his husband wasn’t too thrilled by that potential match,” Sebby says.
They all keep talking, Anne just sitting and listening to them reminisce about all the people their parents had tried to set her up within their desperate attempt for her to no longer be single. It didn’t help that the last time she listened to them about dating was Andy, the boy who cheated on her when they got to college. Apparently going to school half an hour from each other wasn’t enough for him to keep up their two-year relationship instead of shoving his tongue down multiple girls throats before doing god only knows what else.
“When do you think they’ll stop trying to set me up with someone?” Anne finally pips in, accidentally cutting off something Jeremy was saying as she stared at the wine she was swirling in the glass.
“When you get a boyfriend,” her siblings say in unison.
“I hate all of you for doing that,” she laughs. “But, seriously, why is it so important that I have a boyfriend?”
“Oh, you know your mother,” Jason says, putting his glass down on the floor. “She saw what Lucy and I had and then wanted that for all her children.”
Lucy playfully shoves him, kissing him as Anne and Sebby groan. “She just wants you to be happy, and to her and dad, happiness is marriage and a family.”
“Where am I going to meet someone if I go to work or here where they try to bring in non-single non-potential suitors?” she asks, looking over at Jeremy. “Sorry.”
He shrugs, not able to get a word in before Matthew starts, “What if you met someone at work like how Steph and I met?”
“Yeah because there are so many single men walking around the maternity ward,” she says, her phone buzzing in front of her. “What about you, though, Seb, how’s Collins?” Anne asks, changing the subject.
“Eh,” he shrugs, his eyes wandering to Anne’s phone screen, “I’m not sure we’re going to last to graduation.”
“What?” Lucy squeals, causing Jason to jump as she threw her legs out of his lap. “I thought you said she was ‘the one’?”
Sebby looks down at his glass, a stupid smirk on his face. “Nah, that changed. She doesn’t want me to go to law school in Boston, she wants me to stay here or move to California with her.”
“But the adventure of moving with your girlfriend to another state!” Matthew offers, Stephanie rolling her eyes.
“Matthew, not everyone needs adventure like you do, hon.”
Anne’s phone buzzes again, a reminder that she had a text waiting for her. Picking it up before Sebby can see who it is, ever the nosy little brother, she sees a message from Tyson popping up as they continue their conversation about Sebby’s love life and Anne’s lack thereof. . They had only been texting for a few days since their encounter at the hospital, but every time his name came up she couldn’t help but smile, lifting the wine glass to her lips to cover it in hopes of her siblings not noticing.
How’s your Christmas been so far?
A simple ‘eh’ as a response was all that she needed to send. It could be worse, but her mom trying to set her up with a guy with a girlfriend was definitely not something that made for a good Christmas. The only thing that could be worse is if their dad came home early from the flight he was on with a guy he picked up in whatever country he had to go to that prompted him to miss the holiday. Normal dads who had to travel would bring their kids back little trinkets or a postcard, but Anne wouldn’t put it past Tony to borderline kidnap someone from the plane he was flying and bring them home for Anne.
Tyson’s contact comes up again, an incoming call that prompted Anne to step away so she could answer it. “What’s up?”
“You said your Christmas was ‘eh.’ What’s going on?”
“It’s a long story,” she groans, pressing her back up against the fridge.
“Well, what if I have something that might make it better?” he flirts.
“Oh? Like what”
“What if I said I’m 100% free to buy you that coffee any time tomorrow, since I know you said you didn’t have work, and you can tell me about Christmas then?”
Anne hears her siblings laugh not ten feet away, praying that they couldn’t hear her conversation. Taking in a deep breath, she knew that her cheeks were turning pink at his words. “Sure, that sounds good. I’ll see you tomorrow?” she asks, walking back over to join her siblings.
“I’ll text you details,” he tells her, hanging up.
“Oh, my god,” Lucy yells, interrupting their conversation. “Anne was talking to a boy.”
“What the hell? What makes you think that?” she asks.
“Your cheeks are red," Lucy says, prompting Anne to raise her hand to feel the heat radiating from her face, "Who else would you be seeing tomorrow?” her sister eggs on, her eyebrow raised since she knew she was right.
Anne tries to find her words, unable to think of a name that wasn’t a guy's name to blurt out.
“Is it Tyson?” Sebby asks, Anne’s unlocked phone in his hand.
“You jackass!” she yells, lunging at her brother to try to get her phone back.
Teresa’s footsteps sound down the stairs, her poking her head between the gap in the stair rail and the steps themselves, Anne and Sebby looking like a deer in headlights when they see their mom. “I was coming to say that dinner was ready, but what’s going on here?”
“Anne has a boy she wasn’t telling us about,” Sebby blabs, earning an ‘I’ll kill you’ look from Anne.
“Oh! Annie!” their mom squeals, running down the stairs to pick her up off the ground and hug her. “Why didn’t you tell us about him?”
“I, uh,” Anne starts, still not sure what to say.
“You have to bring him to New Year’s Day at Uncle Vince’s house,” she tells her, the rest of the siblings following Anne being dragged back up the stairs for dinner, her mom announcing that Anne had a boyfriend when she, in fact, didn’t.
=============
December 26, 2021
“So, are you going to tell me why your Christmas was only ‘eh,’ or am I going to have to guess?” Tyson asks, setting down two cups of coffee in front of them. Tyson had asked Anne to meet him at a small coffee shop that was within walking distance of her apartment, thankful that she didn’t have to drive through Denver on the day where everyone was returning anything unwanted, like her Aunt Lisa returning one of the copies of the Agatha Christie novel that her and Sebby each got her.
Anne groans, the images of last night’s dinner flashing through her mind. “Can we talk about something else, first?”
“Fine,” Tyson says, taking a long sip of the coffee, “What did you get for gifts?”
She raises her eyebrow at him, Tyson mirroring her expression except with a goofy grin on his face. Rolling her eyes, she starts listing off the stuff she got: “My parents got me a new attachment for my KitchenAid stand mixer since my younger brother, Sebby, broke it last time he was over and a voucher for a flight anywhere in the country like they do every year, um, some gift cards from my aunts and uncles, my nieces all did their best attempts at drawing a portrait of me, Sebby told me he was going to come over and make dinner for me, which scares me because he can’t cook, Matthew and his wife got me some books they thought I would like, and Lucy and her husband got me this bracelet,” Anne tells him, extending her arm out to show him.
“I have so many questions,” Tyson starts.
“I might have answers,” Anne tells him, raising her cup to him.
“How big is your family?”
“I’m the third of four, Lucy and Matthew are twins and are about five years older than me, then Sebby is a year younger than me. Lucy has two daughters and Matthew has one. My dad has two brothers; one older, one younger. The older one has three kids, the younger has two and then three grandchildren.”
“Mom’s family?”
Anne looks down at her coffee. “I’m the only one who talks to anyone on that side of the family. My mom and her brother got into a fight when their parents died over what was left to them. My uncle has two daughters and two granddaughters.”
“I’m sorry,” he says, looking between the coffee and Anne.
She shrugs, not really bothered by it at this point. “It’s whatever. I talk to them because I want to, so it’s fine. What other questions do you have, though?”
“The ticket voucher?”
“Yeah,” Anne laughs, “Our dad is a pilot with Southwest Airlines, so every Christmas they give us a voucher to fly anywhere we want. They say they want to make sure that we take time for ourselves, but I think Dad gets some sort of bonus for every voucher he buys.”
Tyson throws his head back laughing. It wasn’t that funny, but seeing him so happy, Anne couldn’t help but smile back at him. “What about you, what did you get for Christmas?”
“My mom and sister flew down and basically restocked my kitchen for me.”
“Ok, that’s a great present, though,” she says. “Where was your dad?”
The smile from Tyson’s face fades, not looking up at Anne. “I never knew him. My mom and grandmother raised me.”
“Oh, Tyson,” she says, reaching out for his hand. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t know.”
He shrugs, a forced smile on his face. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything, I don’t think. My mom and my grandmother are the reason I am who I am. I wouldn’t give that up or change it.”
The two of them sit there, Anne trying to think about how many times she helped deliver a baby when the father was nowhere to be found. She normally figured they were busy or just not in the delivery room, not being there all together was something she couldn’t even begin to imagine. “But enough about me. Why was your Christmas ‘eh’?”
“My family has it in their heads that I need a boyfriend,” she admits, Tyson smirking at her words. “And my brother saw your texts coming up on my phone and being the asshole that he is, announced that I was texting a boy, so now, I need to find someone to bring with me to my uncle’s house on New Year’s Day that I can pass off as you.”
Tyson gives her a confused look. “Why wouldn’t you just bring me?”
Anne sits there, a shocked look on her face. “Because they think ‘Tyson’ is my boyfriend, and you aren’t?”
“So we pretend. They don’t need to know,” he shrugs, acting like it was no big deal.
“That would never work,” Anne dismisses him.
“Why not? You don’t think I’m a good actor?” Tyson whines, acting insulted at Anne’s words.
She scoffs, “Ok, one, hockey players are never good actors, and two, Sebby or Lucy are bound to figure out that you are not my boyfriend. Sebby wants to be a lawyer so he analyzes everything and Lucy is just this perfect anomaly of a human who would be bound to figure it out.”
“I think I can play your boyfriend for New Year’s Day,” he says, confidence dripping in his voice.
“No, I can’t have you do that.”
The maternity ward where Anne worked never ceased to be hectic, the miracle of life happening at least once an hour. No matter how much Anne had studied in nursing school, nothing could have prepared her for the stress that could come from thhe job, the long hours, the potential for something so right to turn so wrong in a minute, the way nothing can go planned since the baby dictated all, the mess that comes with every birth, or the joy that results from a former patient sending her the occasional picture of a baby she helped deliver as they’re growing up.

Yunho POV
I could feel Y/N relax behind me as she snuggled herself into my back. I couldn't help but smile. She really was something else.
"Cute," I mumbled.
I hope she'll except us for who we are...
Y/N POV
The motorcycle ride ended a lot faster than I had expected. It was quite relaxing actually. I could ride all day if I could.
I hopped off the bike and took the helmet off. When I took it off, I swung my hair around in an effort to get it less tangled. I could see San staring at me as I did so. I looked over to him and it looked like his eyes just flashed purple??? I'm prolly losing my mind, so I just brushed it off. The boys invited inside their house, and may I tell you, they own a mansion. A big ass mansion to be in fact.
I was gawking at it, until I heard some of the boys chuckle.
"Holy shit, how rich are y'all?" I asked.
"A lot richer than you think," Seonghwa said cockily.
"Oh well no shit Sherlock," I responded rolling my eyes.
When we all entered the front door, the rain began to pour buckets over the city.
The house gave me an awfully sketchy vibe,  it was really dark and gloomy. "They have all this money, and they choose to live in this dark ass mansion," I thought.
"I guess I should thank y'all for making sure I don't drown in the rain," I said giggling.
"It's not a problem! In all honesty, we're surprised you walked away from Twice like that," Hongjoong responded.
"Why? They're the average obsessed bitches. Always trying to grab the popular boys' attention," I said rolling my eyes.
"Well yeah, but they won't hesitate to make your life total hell," Wooyoung sighed.
"If they seriously think I'm going to let them walk over me, they're wrong. If someone ends up dead, don't be surprised," I growled.
The guys looked at me surprised.
I sighed. "Yeah I know, I don't seem to be the person who would act like that, right? Well I'm super stiff around new people. That's why I act shy. But when people get on my nerves, shit goes down. So I'm telling y'all this now.....don't fuck with me."
"And what if we do?" Seonghwa said, smirking.
"Is that a challenge, Seonghwa?"
"Maybe...."
Immediately, I shot a serious stare at him. At first, I decided to play a stare off with him at first. I slowly walked towards him, then pounced. I tackled him to the ground and and put him in a headlock. I was in a position where I could pin his arms and legs down so he couldn't fight back.
"I told you, don't fuck with me."
At that moment, Seonghwa's eyes turned red like how San's changed earlier. I pushed him off of me and got up. I looked from Seonghwa to San in confusion.
My confused face made everyone else just as confused.
"What's wrong?" Mingi asked.
"Your eyes," I responded blandly.
At that moment all the guys except San showed faces of panic.
"Why did they turn red?"
"I think you're seeing things, Y/N."
"How could I be seeing things when it happened to San and Seonghwa?"
Yunho glared at San. San shrugged.
"Explain. I'm not stupid. You know your eyes did that. And, why the hell are you wearing clothes like that?"
"Before we say anything, please don't be scared and run off," Wooyoung sighed.
"Talk," was all I said.
The guys looked at each other as if they were trying to decide who would speak.
"Fine, I'll say it because y'all are being to big of pussies to talk," San growled. "We're vampires."
I began to laugh my ass off.
"V-Vampires?" I said between laughs. "Great joke guys."
I was suddenly pinned against a wall.
"This isn't a damn joke," San said.
His eyes were turning a dark crimson this time. I could see his fangs start to come out.
I was trying to process what was happening when San let me go.
"And before you ask, no, we aren't going to drink your blood and kill you," Jongho said.
"I should go home," I mumbled.
"You aren't going anywhere," San retorted.
"And why the hell do YOU care?" I spat.
"Are you ok?" Yunho asked.
"No, I'm not ok!" I yelled. "I fucking knew you guys were familiar. I should've known better than this."
"What do you mean?" Wooyoung replied sadly.
"What do I mean? WHAT DO I MEAN!? YOU ASSHOLES KILLED HER!" I was crying at this point.
I looked back at the guys to see their eyes change to blue. I walked over to San and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt.
"You fucking murdered my best friend," I said as I threw San to the ground.
The guys were shocked. No one has ever treated San like that. San's eyes turned black. I was a bit startled to see his eyes change to that color, but I shook the feeling off.
"You asked for it bitch!" San screamed.
The guys rushed to hold him back but I stopped them.
"Don't. I'm not scared of him or what he can do. If he's going to kill me, let him. At least she won't be alone up there anymore."
Third Person POV
Y/N collapsed on the ground in tears. The boys were heartbroken. San even felt his heart hurt a little bit. The guys looked at the poor girl unsure of what to do.
"Where's the bathroom?" Y/N asked quietly.
"Down the hallway, first door to the right," Hongjoong responded.
WARNING: ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AFTER THIS POINT YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Y/N got up and followed his directions to be lead to a large bathroom. Y/N locked the door and slid down against it sobbing. Little did Y/N know, the guys could hear and see her thoughts. Soon they could smell her blood.
"Guys, is that her blood!?" Yeosang asked frantically.
Yeosang decided that he wouldn't wait for their answer and just booked it to the bathroom.
"Y/N, please open the door!"
There was no response. Not even the sound of her crying could be heard. Yeosang teleported into the bathroom to see a horrific sight. Yeosang called for the guys to come, and they all teleported in to see an unconscious Y/N in Yeosangs's arms with blood pooling out of her wrists and neck. Seonghwa, being the healer of the group dashed towards a crying Yeosang. He lifted Y/N into his arms and booked it into his room to help her. The guys turned back towards Yeosang. They have rarely seen him cry before, and the fact that he was crying over a girl he met in one day was shocking.
"I-I can't believe I'm s-saying t-this, but W-Wooyoung's right. She's d-different," Yeosang barely spoke. "She c-can't die!"
The rest of Ateez felt the same way. She was different, special even. All they knew was that they were going to protect her.
Meanwhile, Seonghwa was frantically working to stop the bleeding and stitch her up. He managed to successfully do so, and he soon found himself looking at the poor girl. He walked out of his room to meet with the very worried guys.
"I think she'll be ok," Seonghwa said.
"I can't believe she actually tried to kill herself," Wooyoung said. "How are we even going to talk to her? She said we killed her best friend, she hates us!"
The guys groaned and sighed in agreement with Wooyoung.
2 Hours Later
"Urrggh," Y/N said as she woke up.
She looked around to realize that her wrists and neck are bandaged up and that she's in an unfamiliar room. Y/N arose from the bed she was laying in and proceeded to walk out. The room was attached to the hallway, so Y/N easily found her way to the living room. She could hear the sound of male voices, so Y/N assumed it was the guys. Y/N had to use the assistance of the walls to walk, so when Y/N got to the end of the hallway, she stood there leaning against the cool wall. The boys could hear movement behind them, and when they turned around they saw you there leaning against the door frame with glossy eyes. Y/N resumed her efforts of walking but San was the first person to teleport to her. He could see the pure emptiness and sadness in her eyes and it broke him apart. Before she could reject, San picked Y/N up and carried her over to the couch. She was placed between San and Seonghwa.
"How are you feeling?" Seonghwa asked.
"I've been a lot better," Y/N said with a small smile.
The guys realized that no matter what the situation is, Y/N manages to make the situation a lot lighter and brighter.
"Y/N, we are so sorry," Hongjoong started.
Y/N sighed, "I appreciate your apology, but you should know that I probably won't forgive you for it. She was the only person who made my life have light, so not having her here is really difficult."
"You look really tired, Y/N," Yeosang said.
"I just have to move around to get my blood flow back up that's all," She said.
Y/N looked back at Yeosang to his the fear in his eyes.
"You were the person who walked in, weren't you?" Y/N asked Yeosang.
Yeosang couldn't answer her. He could only let out a quiet tear.
"Come here," she said.
Yeosang hesitantly went in her direction, and stood before her. Y/N signaled for San to get up, and San followed. She patted the now open seat next to her, and Yeosang took the spot. What Y/N did next shocked everyone in the room. She hugged Yeosang and snuggled into him.
"I'm so sorry you had to walk in to find me like that," was all she said.
Yeosang couldn't help but hug her back and cuddle with her. San was looking at the two people feeling anger and jealousy boil through his veins.
"Just because I'm not a vampire doesn't mean I can't sense your guys's jealousy. So if you want a hug you gotta fight for a spot next to me," Y/N smiled.
Y/N let go of Yeosang and sat up. Seonghwa engulfed her into a large hug. She returned the hug and rubbed his back. Soon, the rest of the boys hugged her and inhaled her addictive scent. San was the only member left. This time, Seonghwa got up and let San fill his spot. He looked at her with grey eyes and then gently hugged the girl. To San, Y/N felt so small and fragile. She fit into his arms perfectly. He never wanted to let her go. She snuggled into him closer and San looked up to the guys. He gave them a look that showed how much he cared for her. There was a peaceful silence until Yunho broke it.
"Has anyone ever told you how good you smell?"
"No, what do I smell like?"
"You smell like vanilla and roses!" Yunho exclaimed happily.
"I don't use anything that has that smell though?" Y/N announced.
"Wait that means that's your natural scent! I have never met a human that smells as good as you do," Wooyoung stated.
Y/N giggled at the compliment and her laugh made the guys' hearts melt.
"I take it you wore those outfits to hide from the sun?" Y/N asked referring to the dark outfits the guys were wearing.
"Sorta. They also hide our identities from other people. There are some people who know us for what we are we hide ourselves using these clothes," San responded.
Y/N looked at her phone to check the time, and she saw that it was about 7:30 at night. The rain has stopped awhile ago, so Y/N could go home now.
"I guess I should head out so I'm not a bigger burden than I already am," Y/N said looking at the guys.
"In the condition you're in, you're not going anywhere. If you run into other vampires, they will not hesitate to drain you," Jongho said.
Y/N nodded her head in understanding what Jongho said.
"You can sleep in my room tonight, I'll sleep on the couch," San told Y/N.
"I'm not about to let you sleep on the couch in your own home," Y/N fought back.
"Y/N you need to sleep on a bed. Especially with your injuries," Seonghwa said.
"But I feel bad!"
"It's either you sleep in his bed, or he sleeps in it with you," Mingi said.
Y/N displayed a light blush on her face and looked down.
"Where is the bedroom?" Y/N asked nervously.
"It's down the hallway, last door on the left," San chuckled.
"Oh! Before you go, here are some clothes!" Wooyoung said handing her a hoodie and boxers. "If you want to take a shower, you may."
"Thanks Wooyoung!" Y/N said giving him a hug. "I'm going to take a shower then go to bed. Night guys!"
"Night Y/N!" all the guys said together.
Y/N headed towards the bathroom she was in earlier to see a light red stain on the tile floor.
"Yikes! How could I be stupid enough to think that BLOOD wouldn't stain the tile?" Y/N said to herself aloud.
Y/N undressed herself and took the bandages Seonghwa wrapped around her off. She examined the wounds on her body then felt warm liquid run down her neck. In a split second, Y/N could hear a fist banging on the door and San's voice.
"Y/N?!? ARE YOU OK?!? WHY CAN I SMELL YOUR BLOOD-"
"Hey! It's ok! I just took my bandages off, and my stitches started to bleed a little bit. I'm fine!"
"Can I see them?" San asked.
"Hold on! I don't have any clothes on at the moment!"
When San heard those words leave Y/N's mouth, his heart rate involuntarily increased. He shook off the images running through his mind when Y/N opened the bathroom door. San walked in and shut the door behind him so the smell of her blood doesn't radiate through the house. San hurried into the bathroom so he couldn't see what Y/N was wearing. When he turned around he saw Y/N only wearing her undergarments. Without realizing, San was staring at the girl in front of him admiring her figure.
"I'm sorry about what I'm wearing. It was the only thing I could wear for you to be able to see them clearly," Y/N said with a blush.
"It's ok! I was just surprised you let me see you like this," San said.
"For some reason, my heart trusts you. Even though my head doesn't because of what happened. But I trust my heart more than my mind. The only reason why I did what I did was because my head got the best of me," Y/N confessed.
A genuine smile crept up to San's face, and his eyes turned yellow.
"Do they hurt?" San asked referring to the stitches.
"It just feels like a bruised sort of pain, but it's nothing too bad," Y/N said looking at her sliced wrists.
Blood began to run down her right wrist after she touched it.
"Ouch! That hurt a bit!" Y/N said looking at her bleeding wrist laughing.
Y/N could hear small grunts and growls coming from San and that's when she remembered he's a vampire. "Well shit. How could I possibly forget that he drinks blood?" Y/N thought to herself, giving a herself a mental facepalm as well. She headed towards the sink to wash it off, but San stopped her.
"Please don't wash it off yet," he grunted.
"Why? You can barely contain yourself at the moment."
"It smells really good and I want it to last longer," San said as he stared at the burgundy liquid.
"You want some of it, don't you?" Y/N sighed.
"Of course I do, but I couldn't do that to you."
"I appreciate that, but what would happen if I let you?"
San glanced up at Y/N's face, slightly taken aback with what she just said.
"Are you trying to hint something, Y/N?"
"I mean, it's not like you're going to bite me. It came out naturally! Besides, you look the same way as you did when you did you know what. That can only lead me to believe you haven't had any in quite awhile."
"How are you so damn smart?"
"You might be good at lying San, but you can't hide everything," Y/N said with a giggle.
"I swear to god, you're too cute. But would you actually let me have some?" San looked at Y/N seriously.
"I told you, I trust my heart more than my head."
Y/N raised her wrist once she saw the blood was about to drop onto the tile again.
"There is no way in hell I'm about to stain the tile AGAIN. So, the only way to clean it is to wash it off or you have it," Y/N said looking at her bloody wrist then to the blood thirsty vampire in front of her. "No biting, ok?"
San looked at Y/N with excitement.
"I bet you taste better than you smell!"
Y/N laughed at his statement and headed over to the sink where she could sit and make sure none of her blood can stain the dAMN TILE-
Once she was situated, Y/N signaled San to get closer to her and he followed her commands. He was now standing between her thighs looking at her eyes with his golden ones.
"Ok, your eyes keep changing color, and I have no idea what it means. Could you explain the colors to me before you start?" Y/N questioned.
"Well, my eyes should be gold at the moment which means I'm seriously holding back from getting your blood. Typically when I get a serious blood lust they turn gold. Red is anger, blue is sadness, grey is regret, purple is sexual lust, green is ecstasy, and orange is possessiveness or the feeling of wanting to protect something," San explained.
"I don't think I'll remember all of that, but I'll try my best!"
The two people laughed until Y/N realized her hand was starting to pool with blood.
"Bruh, why the hell am I bleeding so much? You stitches are seriously doing a shitty job."
Y/N raised the hand filled with blood and moved it in front of San. San looked at Y/N one last time searching for a final look of assurance, and Y/N responded with a nod.
San began by drinking what was in Y/N's hand. Her hand became a cup to encapsulate it all. The first taste for San sent him into space. The fact that he hasn't fed in awhile adds to the pleasure, but her taste was the best he's ever had. As he finished what was in her hand, he looked up at her. Y/N could see his fangs and her blood all over his chin. His eyes were a vibrant gold.
Tumblr media
"Looks like I was right. You're the best I've ever had."
"Yeah ok," Y/N said.
"Y/N if you were to leave in this state you would be dead by now. Or you would be kidnapped and used as a living blood bag. You're blood is unique. It is so much sweeter than what most humans have."
"Well lucky for you, San, my hand, neck, and wrist is covered in it. Now you can't complain from withdraws."
"I'm not complaining about it either!" San exclaimed.
"Remember San, I need to take a shower. We have classes tomorrow."
San growled.
"Can't we just skip tomorrow?" San whined.
"And do what?"
"Let you heal, Ateez aren't the only vampires at school, and I sure as hell ain't letting anyone else have you if you bleed."
Tumblr media
San's eyes flashed orange in a sign of possessiveness.
"Fine, I'll skip. You are acting like a over protective human boyfriend," Y/N chuckled.
"Well the fact that I am drinking your blood connects me to you. I can sense your change in emotions now. The guys can because of what we are, but me doing that makes me the closest out of all of them."
San returned to cleaning you up, and now he moved onto her neck.
She tilted her head to give him more access. He leaned towards her and could see her vein protrude slightly.
"Tell me if this hurts ok? I'm going to go over the stitches."
Y/N nodded her head and he began to lick the blood running down her throat. She couldn't help but let out a soft moan.
"San," she whispered.
San stopped what he was doing and looked at the girl in front of him. His eyes changed to a beautiful shade of purple.
Tumblr media
"What are you doing to me, Y/N?"
"What do you mean?"
"You know how I am. I'm really cold to people. But when you came along both me and the guys couldn't help but feel attracted to you. And now here I am. Drinking the best blood I've ever had, from the girl I'm interested in."
Y/N jumped off of the counter and looked in the mirror to see no blood left.
"Damn could you enjoy it any more?" Y/N said with sarcasm.
"I definitely could, babe."
Y/N blushed at the nickname. She's never been called that before. She could easily get used to it though.
"I need to take a shower now, San."
"Can I take it with you?"
"W-What?"
"You heard me. I want to take a shower with you."
"Why?"
"I don't know. This whole blood drinking thing just makes me want to be around you 24/7."
"Ok."
"Wait really?"
"Yeah sure. But...if this leads to you wanting to get closer to me just to use me for sex I will not hesitate to beat the living shit out of you."
"Oh believe me, if I wanted to play you you'd be out of my house right now."
The two chuckled and Y/N walked to turn the shower on. Once it was warm enough for her liking, she looked back at San.
"Is this too hot, San?"
San walked over to feel the water.
"Nope. It's almost as perfect as you."
"I did not expect you to be such a flirt."
"People aren't always who they seem they are Y/N."
"Yeah, I'm quite aware of that."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"I mean, it's not like I'm going to be able to hide it from you forever, so I might as well get it over with."
San looked at her with a hint of worry in his eyes.
"It's my birth parents."
San looked at Y/N with interest.
"How about I tell you once we're in the shower, ok?"
San agreed and Y/N took her undergarments off. San couldn't take his eyes off of her. She was absolutely stunning to him.
"Hey! I can't be the only person naked! That's not fair!"
In the blink of an eye, San was undressed and standing in front of Y/N. He took her hand and pulled her into the shower with him. San watched as the water droplets ran down her delicate body. The way her long hair covered her exposed breasts.
"Ok, we're in the shower. Continue please," San said impatiently.
"Oh right. THEM." Y/N said with disgust in her voice. "I was not planed to be here. I'm only alive because my birth parents were retarded enough to not use protection. So when I was born, they decided they weren't ready to raise a child so they gave me to my aunt. I was a much different person back then than I am now. I used to be so caring of others and so welcoming. Now I've become more broken off and closed off. One day, they decided to show up to my house in America. They had the audacity to ask me to go back to them. They even thought that I would be willing to go with them. Ever since then, I have hated people. The fact that my best friend was murdered made it worse," San looked at Y/N with his grey eyes, "I know, vampires depend on blood to stay alive, but I was just so upset that it had to be her. I was pissed at myself for not stopping you guys. But as I thought about it, I realized neither of us would of made it out alive if I was to try and stop you. I lost trust in all people after that. I haven't made any friends for I live with the fear that they will leave me just as she did. I was still new here when she died so I had to take a lot of time to get used to my surroundings here. So here I am, a girl who lives alone and in a country that she still isn't that familiar to her yet."
Y/N was crying at this point from remembering the trauma she suffered. Without a second thought, San pinned Y/N against the shower wall and lifting her chin up with his index finger. Without a second thought he leaned in and kissed her. It was a kiss that expressed how bad he felt for doing what he did to her best friend. Y/N kissed back, enjoying the sensation of his lips against hers.
They both parted from the kiss to regain their breath when San spoke...
"I'm so sorry, Y/N. If I knew my actions would lead to me hurting you like this, I would have never done that. I was just so desperate that if I didn't feed, I would go on a murder spree. But now I promise to never hurt you like that. I promise to protect you from everything you fear the most. I understand if you don't feel the same way, but I love you so much. I never want to let you go.

Defy Your Authority: Chapter 3
Read on AO3. Part 2 here. Part 4 here.
Summary: You always hated tagging along on boys' night.
Words: 3300
Warnings: tw//kassanovella
Characters: Kylo Ren x Reader
A/N: HI LOOK AT ME I GOT THIS OUT IN TIME. I did indeed test positive for COVID so this was wrought through my fatigue--and may be why there is a delay for the next chapter. We'll see!
I hope y'all enjoyed this. I am doing my best to respond to all the feedback, but I'm like... so tired LMFAO. Thank you so much for your support and engagement. It literally means the world to me and is so encouraging.
I love you. ❤️
It didn’t matter how many times you told yourself to calm down. Your pulse bounded like a rabbit, every thump a reminder of your tightening chest. The walls of the Steadfast washed past in black-silver blurs, your mind wild with fear. Hux’s words replayed over and over, a cruel broadcast in your brain. Requests for response from the officers stationed there have gone unanswered.
Realistically, that could mean anything. Pessimistically, everyone was dead and you were homeless.
The thought of losing your crew weakened your knees. For four months, they’d been your solace and something akin to a family. Not like you’d had other real options on that little butthole of a planet--but you’d gotten lucky. You’d made a home out of Orinda; a home where you’d planned to return.
Lip pinched in thought, you joined Kylo in a new turbolift, crossing to the corner again as if he were a disease you wanted to avoid. You folded your arms over your chest, stared at your shoes. If you were homeless, it was anyone’s guess as to what you’d do or where you’d go next. It was clear that your supposed… whatever he was didn’t care for your presence.
Leather gloves scrunched in the silence. The lift arrived, and he stormed off, in expectation that you’d follow. You rolled your eyes, trailing behind him, allowing the need that had burgeoned between your thighs to deflate.
He’d said he would punish you. But you couldn’t think of a punishment worse than going four more months without his touch.
Kylo broke through another set of blast doors into the hangar, officers and Stormtroopers alike snapping to attention in his presence. If he noticed or cared, it didn’t show--he pushed through the quiet floor, furious stride carrying him toward one of the ugliest ships you’d ever seen.
Black durasteel panels formed a long, cylindrical frame, the bow outfitted with a row of rakish teeth and bordered by two guiding flaps. The engines looped like two smooth bricks at the stern of the vessel, the two ends connected by rows of external piping and guarded by a sprinkle of gunning stations. Its blocky build bore a resemblance to a prison transport--if that prison transport was then modified by an eager, unsophisticated halfwit.
He climbed the descended ramp in thundering strides, and you skulked in his wake, only to be greeted with one of the mercenaries you’d seen earlier. You paused, but Kylo passed the soldier, marching toward the stern and abandoning you in the main corridor. The man--at least, you were fairly certain he was a man--wore a mask embedded with breathing tubes, a huge, heavy club in his hands. The weight of his gaze anchored you to the floor. He said nothing.
“Uhm…” You tried to find an introduction, but none seemed appropriate. Grimacing, you offered him a half-hearted salute. “Sir.”
The man did not respond. Face burning, you scurried into the ship, hot on Kylo’s heels.
Few lights rimmed the interior of the vessel, your only guide the resonant thump of his boots along the durasteel slats. It was as dim as it was dank--the deeper you delved, the heavier the air. It was sticky with the stench of war, weighed with iron and brimmed with smoke. And underneath that, a scent you’d only describe as one owned by a pack of panting massiffs.
A chill crept over your scalp. This ship was empty of kindness, barren of mercy. You didn’t need the Force to know that nothing good had ever happened within these walls.
Your fear had you scampering to keep pace. Kylo led you through a flickering hall and turned a corner, swiped a switch. A set of blast doors opened to sharp steps, another pair of doors at the top. Those parted as you approached, light spilling from the Steadfast hangar through wide slats of red transparisteel. You’d arrived in the cockpit.
Six chairs lined the wrap-around dashboard. Two as pilot seats, two positioned at gunning and weapons systems, and two plugged toward the back, each in front of a monitoring station. One seemed to handle communications--or lack thereof, the radio receivers and wiring were all almost entirely torn out--and the other dedicated to internal surveillance. At the latter, a matrix of screens with live feed of the interior of the ship.
Even through the shadowed halls, you could distinguish a handful of prison cells. Each of them was torn apart, littered with metal scrap and half-shorn weaponry. The walls themselves were adorned with sloppy graffiti, one of them decorated by a mural of a massive, five-legged lizard beast. A huge red beam was bursting through its neck. Within the tiny walls were separate collections of cultured artifacts. You knew enough about war to know they were trophies.
Every room also possessed a rumpled, dirty bed. A flash of hall light near one cell, illuminating notches in the durasteel where the head of the bedframe met the wall. Like the frame had been slammed against it. Over and over and over.
You swallowed. On one of the feeds, a body slipped through the hall like a living shade. Pausing, you watched until it disappeared from view. The sound of footsteps whispered, then hummed, then roared. You spun, seeking out Kylo, finding him by the co-pilot’s chair, and darted into the pilot’s spot as if this was a totally normal occasion and you weren’t on a weird deathship surrounded by his weird death bodyguards.
Kylo turned to gaze at you, and the blast doors opened, stealing his attention. In the frame stood another would-be man, outfitted with a ribbed-weave robe and carting a huge plasma rifle. Filth smothered him from his boots halfway up his legs, and his head was obscured by a helmet, not unlike the one you’d known Kylo to wear. This one had two blinders on either side, like this man was a predator.
Like he was a hunter.
Whatever fear you felt for him, he certainly did not feel it for you. He glanced between you and Kylo, trying to ascertain the relationship that resulted in your presence.
“She’s in my seat.” His voice was grainy, like glass on stone, distorted underneath his mask.
You held up your hands in deference. “Hey, sorry. I had no idea this was your seat.” You went to stand, frowning at Kylo, who was studying your every movement. Really had to love how helpful he was being.
“Hurry up,” the man said.
Nodding, you wriggled around the chair with your hands still raised, as if this would offer any form of protection between you and this fully armed guard. He squared his feet and stalked toward the pilot’s seat. You side-stepped him, but he shoulder-checked you despite it, and you stumbled back, wincing.
“What the f--”
Kylo Ren’s saber screamed to life, slicing a divide between the hunter and the chair. He stalled, fists balled, neck rolling to stare at Kylo. You gulped, rubbing your arm, your eyes flipping between him and the crackling rod of plasma only a foot away from the man’s waist.
“Sir.”
“Careful,” Kylo said.
He snorted. “Of a Lieutenant--”
“Kuruk.”
Kuruk pivoted to you, and you met his stare somewhere behind the shield of metal. Whoever was underneath the helmet was rending you apart in his mind.
He shrugged his shoulder and looked back to Kylo.
“Excuse me. Sir.”
The saber disappeared, and Kuruk took his seat at the dashboard. You flushed. At least he’d done that much. You snuck to the back of the cockpit, thinking to sit at the surveillance station, but pausing there too. Every one of these seats could have an owner whose name you didn’t know. Glimpsing Kylo, you threw up your hands in confusion.
Kylo caught this, but did not acknowledge it. “Resistance activity was spotted on the scanners. Get Cardo and Trudgen on the turrets. Ushar gunning.”
“Yes, Master.”
Your eyes widened. Master?
Kuruk fussed with the dashboard, relaying the information, and you gazed at Kylo, examining his body in the same routine you’d practiced nightly with your hands between your legs. Fuck, he was big--the thick expanse of chest rose with a slow breath, and you watched it fall, then watched his neck tense as he turned, attuned to your observation. Heat rushed your spine when you linked eyes. His jaw stiffened.
“Get in your seat, Lieutenant.”
“Oh,” you replied. “Is this my seat? I didn’t know.” You sank into it, shooting him a wide, sparkling smile. “Thank you, Master.”
Kylo swallowed.
The blast doors opened again, the soldier you’d seen at the entrance bursting through and tromping to a gunner console--you assumed this was Ushar. He tossed his club to the side, flicking on the controls and calibrating the sights. The ship itself bellowed to life, rising from the floor, and you gripped the seat, unable to force your focus from Kylo--just as he was unable to force his from you.
The two of you were in competition. That much was clear.
You just couldn’t figure out what the loser would be impaled with--or if that would make them a winner, instead.
The Buzzard shot into the stars, coasting in a direct path toward Orinda. You broke the staring contest, glimpsing the little planet through the cockpit, pulse picking up again. Requests for response unanswered. Once you got on the ground, you’d go find your crew and make sure they were safe. That’s all you needed to know. Whether or not Kylo wanted you to come back was irrelevant.
You met his gaze again, his irises hiding a storm. Blood bit your cheeks.
Mostly.
“Nothing detected on the sensors,” said Ushar.
Kylo glanced at him then turned toward the transparisteel, searing you with a leer before he sat at the dash. You shivered. Whatever you’d done to make him feel this way, his brief glimmers of favor only made it worse. Maybe you did want to fuck him so you could get a chance to figure it out. Or maybe it was just frustrating to know him in ways no one else had while simultaneously knowing almost nothing at all.
The three men operated in silence as you approached Orinda. From space, it seemed normal. With no starcraft popping up, there was a chance it was a false alarm. That it had been a fly-by. You held your breath when you broke the atmosphere, flames whipping the transparisteel. The Buzzard trembled with gravity, diving toward the ground, greens and browns and blues splitting to trees and fields and sea.
Then a flash of light, smog blooming to life, tiny fires swallowing your narrowing field of vision. Air froze in your lungs, nails biting the hard back of the seat.
“Fuck.” You launched from the chair, scrambled toward the dashboard. “No, no no…”
Kylo spun to face you, but you ignored him, shoving between the two pilot seats to crane over the console and peer through the transparisteel.
He stood, looming over you. “Back to your seat.”
His words swum in the tsunami of your mind. The outpost was smothered with smoke. The closer you drew, the dimmer the horizon, until the Buzzard landed on the border of the eruption, the entire sky encompassed with billowing black fog. Every muscle in your chest felt like wire around your ribs, forcing the breath from your lungs. You shook your head, hands starting to tremble.
They were out there. They could be dead.
The blast doors opened, and you whirled to leave, but Kylo caught your shoulder and stilled you.
“What the--”
“Gather the rest,” Kylo said. He was speaking to Ushar. “Spread out and secure the perimeter.”
Ushar nodded, grabbed his club, and disappeared down the steps. Huffing, you wrenched yourself free from Kylo’s grip and stomped toward the exit only to be paralyzed by a very familiar nothing. You growled, unable to even make a fist.
“Dude!”
“You will remain on board the Buzzard until I return.”
The fact you couldn’t turn to look him in the eye made you even angrier. “You’ve gotta be kidding me,” you said. “That’s my crew. They’re my responsibility.”
“Stand down.”
You snorted. “Hell no.”
Two long, slow steps brought him behind you. His presence consumed you like a black hole, crushing you in darkness.
His chest met your back. “Every one of your little quips has gone unchallenged.” Another step, and his mouth fell to your ear. “Do not test me here.”
Warmth flooded your thighs. If he didn’t like being challenged in front of his soldiers, he shouldn’t have put you all in the same space. His own fault.
“I don’t care,” you said. “These are my crew members. You don’t know them. I do. Let me go.”
“No.”
“Why are you even doing this?” you said. “You’re the one who fucking brought me here!”
A pause. Silence settled between you, the only sounds the distant noise of destruction and your anxious, heaving breath. You heard him exhale.
“Kuruk,” he said. “Scout and support.”
Behind you, Kuruk stood, followed by the metal click of him grappling his rifle. You watched, stuck to your spot, as he charged through the cockpit and down the steps. The blast doors to the stairs shut behind him. Then the ones to the cockpit. And you two were alone.
Kylo snarled, snatched your throat--he was a swoop of rage, swiveling and slamming your back to the wall. You seethed, squirming under his grip, unable to hide the smirk curling on your lips as you tried to pry his wrist away. He subsumed you like a star subsumed space, bright hot and pure, and you were a simple nothingness, addicted to his heat.
“You think you have earned my submission,” he muttered. “You have not.”
You wheezed, gazing into his eyes, finding an electric spark of hunger and fury within them. Four months without this had been far, far too long. As long as he was treating you like a stranger, you didn’t want to give in. But that wouldn’t stop you from making this torture for him, too.
“Then what have I earned,” you purred, “Master?”
He sucked in air through his teeth, pinning your body flat--his chest rolled with excitement, his voice raked over lust. “The further you push me, the worse your earnings.”
You bit your lip, bucking your hips against his, feeling a growing bulge between his legs. “You’re ridiculous.” You’d thought he’d wanted you to go to Orinda. Maybe you’d been wrong. “What, is this because I left?”
A huff. “No.”
“Then I don’t get it.” You rolled your pelvis into him again, and he jerked forward, crushing you to the wall. “Why don’t you want me around? What did I do?”
Kylo shifted, panting into your neck, his mouth centimeters from your skin. “Not what you did,” he said, clutching your throat tighter. “What you saw. It will not happen again.”
Some bit of that stung. You saw inside of his mind. “You act like I made you admit it!” It was difficult to speak under the pressure of his palm. “You could’ve just let me go.”
“Hm.” His hand squeezed, and he dragged his hardening bulge along your thigh. “Perhaps I should have.”
So that’s what this was about. Whatever had happened, he’d decided that what he’d shared with you was weakness. And being Supreme Leader meant he couldn’t be weak. Meant he couldn’t have room or time for you. All you were was a living regret.
Frowning, you glared at him, driving your thumbs into the meat of his wrist and throwing his hand from your neck.
“Yeah,” you said, shoving him back. “Perhaps you should’ve.” His eye twitched. A screeching blast broke the air, and you tensed. “I’m going to find my crew.”
You stalked out of the cockpit, blast doors parting for you as you hit the stairs and cut through the halls back to exit the Buzzard. It was one thing to abandon you. One thing to make you leave. One thing to act like he’d never held you, kissed you, or whispered your name.
But it was an entirely other thing to imply he wished it never would’ve happened. The thought pierced your heart, and you steeled your jaw, tried to pull the pain free. You didn’t have time to play Kylo Ren’s newest Game of Repressed Emotion. You had friends to find.
The ramp to the Buzzard was already down, and you hurried to the ground, smacked with the scent of blazing fuel. Embered ash battered your eyes, and you coughed, covering your face with your arm. Under the wailing wind of heat, you heard Kylo approaching the exit, so you trudged toward the outpost, seeking out any hint of life.
“Tonis!” Your voice was eaten by the flames. “Mirna! Lin!” Narrowing your gaze to protect it, you pushed toward the hangar, knowing that if they were anywhere, they’d be there.
Sweat crawled down your nape, scattering over your lower back as you drew nearer to the fire. The mercenaries were nowhere to be found, but you supposed that was okay, since they didn’t seem very fond of you regardless. The hangar was beyond the completely engulfed fueling station and therefore impossible to see, but as you curved around the fire, you could discern slivers of it. Edges of the building, and then whole sections.
And your stomach dropped.
Another couple of steps, only to discover the hangar scorched, collapsed in on itself like a shattered greenhouse. You stopped a scream and bolted, careening toward the wreckage to see if you could find anyone or anything among the debris. Thick durasteel girders stuck out of the heap like nails, the ridged ceiling crumpled in pieces and mirroring the fire’s light.
“Tonis!” Your back burned from the heat, but you didn’t care. You tried to find a way in, a way to pull something apart, a way to find someone. “Mirna!” You grabbed a huge wooden beam, hands slipping on the soot, but you fruitlessly tugged anyway. “Lin!”
A ragged shard of wood ripped your palm, and you shrieked, cradling it to your breast in shock. Cursing, you left the mass alone, following the foundation around the corner, hoping against hope they escaped out of the back and were huddled behind the hangar. You approached the corner, calling their names, louder and louder. They weren’t coming to meet you. Again, and louder, and you turned the corner, pleading with the Force that they’d be there.
Of course, they weren’t.
In front of you was a cluster of discarded starship parts, all outdated or malfunctioned or busted. It was a collection you’d gathered since you’d arrived--arranged and created when more parts were added. Each fragment was unique, and when building it with your crew, it sometimes resembled a sculpture. Under the clouds of smoke, it looked like a pile of junk.
Growling, you rushed it, kicking the base and sending it all tumbling to the ground. Your furious hands found purchase and hurled whatever they had grabbed to pieces. A scream shook your chest, and you jammed your foot against a solar array panel, cracking it in half. Underneath, you found an old, pretty fuelcell splinter. You grabbed it in your bloody hand and hissed, pulverizing it with your fist. Grunting, you threw the dust into the air, watching as the firewind ate it all.
You heard the rustle of grass behind you. Your shoulders sagged.
“There are no signatures of life remaining at this station.”
Sighing, you turned to Kylo. He was watching you, face blank.
“Yeah.” You wiped your palm on your pant leg, smearing it with blood. “I know.”
His eyes flicked to your hand for the shortest, sharpest moment. Then he met your eyes. “The silencer is still in need of repair.”
You frowned, averting your gaze. “I don’t want your pity.”
“You’d prefer to sleep outside in melted trash.”
“Maybe.” You shrugged a shoulder, crossed your arms. “Dumpster fire and all that.”
Kylo Ren held you in his stare, cape fluttering and hair rumpled in the breeze. Tears stung your eyes. You wanted nothing more than to run into his arms.
“Come.”
He turned the corner. Clearing your throat of sadness, you followed him. You allowed him to guide you through the devastation, past the flames, and up the ramp until you were safe in the Buzzard cockpit. And then he left, likely to gather his men before departure.
And then you were alone.

TEASER
tuesday, february 14th; age 12
you leaned your head against your palm as you zoned out in your last period class. science had never been your favorite subject, even less so given that your teacher had been informally dubbed the school's wack job.
as the day had dragged on, you realized that the holiday wasn't as widely celebrated in middle school. the so-called 'special' day was reserved solely for the few couples on campus, most of which had been dating for only a couple weeks. you bet most would be broken up by next month, the typical cycle for immature, hormone-riddled relationships.
but back to your science class.
you felt your eyes nearly roll into your skull as your teacher excitedly explained the concept of genetics and punnet squares. what a riveting topic to listen to for an hour on valentine's day. however, you couldn't focus on his boisterous ramblings when your mind was chock-full of bitter thoughts of how your best friend had decided that he couldn't be seen with you at school.
okay, maybe not back to your science class. you were too distracted, too bothered, to concentrate.
because while yeonjun had promised to not leave you behind in middle school, it grew exceedingly obvious, as the year went on, that he had lied straight to your face. this holiday was only a painful reminder of that fact.
you couldn't entirely blame him, though, the vast sea of middle school causing you to slowly drift apart from each other as you both tried to find where you fit in. he had made new friends easily, the shy boy you once knew emerged from his shell, countless peers recognizing him for his impressive talents in baseball, in dance, in singing, the list could go on. he was good at everything that he tried his hand at, and by the middle of seventh grade, he had become the campus' golden boy. even the eighth graders knew him!
this came with a cost, however, and that was leaving you, his best friend of five years, behind (for the most part, at least).
you had found your own friends, of course. you had to, or else you would have been deemed a loner, and no one wants to be a loner in middle school. it was uncomfortable, having to talk to people you had never interacted with beforehand. despite this, you had found yourself a little group through your art class: yeri, chaeyoung, and yuqi. they had welcomed you into their trio easily. though it felt weird to have friends other than yeonjun for the first time, you were happy. well, uh, besides the whole yeonjun thing.
with only one class with him, it was easy to not speak to each other during school. your hangouts were now confined to after school, when he wasn't surrounded by his new friends and could make time for you. you never tried to talk to him about it, scared that he'd twist your words and it would destroy what semblance of friendship that remained between you. honestly, you wished that you could go back to elementary school, when things were easier, when you could talk to him at school without worrying about the consequences of doing so.
yet you knew it wasn't that easy. this wasn't elementary school anymore.
your eyes subconsciously trailed over to the boy in question. you were supposed to hang out with him after school, but there was always that one insecurity that rattled around your mind:
what if this was the year that he finally blew you off? for good?
you shook your head, going back to the worksheet your teacher had passed out as you were distracted by your thoughts. punnet squares, okay. one parent with a dominant and recessive gene, one parent with two recessive genes. now fill in the squares…
"hey, y/n."
your head shot up from at the sound of his voice. eyes wide at the fact that he was speaking to you at school. it had been months since he had last done so.
"oh, hi yeonjun. what did you need?" you sent him a tight smile, not that he noticed. twelve year-old boys were never most observant.
he placed a box of candy hearts, the same thing he gifted you every year, on top of your desk. it was blank, no message or name in sight.
"i wanted to give you this before i forgot and it got crushed in my backpack." his voice quietened, almost as if he didn't want anyone to hear what he had to say next, "we're still hanging out after school, right? like we always do?"
you nodded, and he shot you a small smile, "great, thanks."
he walked away. as soon as he sat back down in his seat, his friends were punching at his shoulder, teasing him, asking him if he was dating you. you could hear it all from where you were sitting, but you wished you couldn't after what he said next.
"me? with her? no way, we're just friends. i could never see her like that."
you never truly realized how much he truly meant to you until you no longer hung out until after school, but this? this hurt. it made your chest ache when you saw his borderline disgusted face at the insinuation that you were dating each other. what was so bad about you for him to have that reaction? was it your hair, your face, your acne? you found yourself mentally paging through every possible flaw you saw in yourself until the bell rang, signalling the end of school.
yuqi walked up to you at the front of campus, immediately spotting the forlorn look on your face, "hey, you good?"
"uh, yeah, i guess. listen, i have to go meet up with yeonjun. catch you later?" you asked.
"yeonjun, huh? are you sure you're not dating him?" she smirked, and you rolled your eyes, your mood worsening even more.
"we're just friends," you spat, turning away from her, "he'd never like me like that, anyway. i have no chance with him. i'll see you later, yuqi."
the further you walked, the worse you felt about how you spoke to yuqi. she didn't deserve to deal with the brunt of your wrath, it was uncalled for. you wanted to run back to school and apologize, but you were sure she had already been picked up.
you'd have to make it up to her tomorrow.
as you neared the supermarket a few blocks down the street from school, you could see yeonjun waiting near the entrance, his foot tapping against the sidewalk impatiently. his bike sat next to him, which explained how he arrived much earlier than you.
"took you long enough," he teased as you approached, but you didn't answer, only sending him a half-hearted smile in return. his grin fell, eyebrows now furrowed. oh, now he noticed how you were feeling? typical. "you okay?"
that was the second time you had been asked that now. you wanted to say no, you definitely were not okay, that it hurt to hear him say those words earlier, that it hurt that you couldn't even talk to him during school. you wanted to tell him that you felt abandoned, you wanted to tell him that he broke the promise he made a year ago, that ever since the first day of seventh grade you felt left behind. you wanted to ask him why he even bothered hanging out with you when he couldn't bother even speaking to you at school.
but you didn't.
instead, you plastered an artificial smile on your face, trying to make your voice sound a little more energetic than you felt, "yeah! i guess i'm just tired. science wasn't exactly fun today, y'know?"
"tell me about it," he laughed as he walked beside you, easily accepting your excuse without prying. you wished that he would have pried. "he's the weirdest teacher i've ever had, i can't believe he hasn't been fired yet."
"right?" you replied as you walked down the aisle full of candy. you picked out one of the overpriced boxes of heart-shaped chocolates before walking up to the register. you tried to hand some of your money to the lady helping you, but yeonjun swatted your hand away.
"nuh-uh, you're not paying for this," he argued.
"but-"
"no."
you visibly deflated, scrunching your nose at him in distaste. he simply grinned at you in response.
"ah, young love," the cashier sighed as she took yeonjun's money. your heart clenched, thanking her before you two walked outside again, the air cool against your skin, the sun glaring into your eyes, the weather the complete opposite of your mood. you glanced over at yeonjun. you wondered why he hadn't protested when she said that. you didn't ask.
his hand found yours, dragging you around the corner behind the building. your heart raced, skin heating up slightly at the contact. your reaction couldn't have meant anything. no, you couldn't like him like that. you were friends, nothing more, nothing less.
as you sat next to each other behind the supermarket, unwrapping and eating the chocolate that he had bought you just a few minutes ago, you realized that you really couldn't deny it anymore: you were in love with choi yeonjun, your best friend, and you couldn't do anything about it.

If you missed part 1: Here!
Part 3 Here!
-----
The next day the SVU squad was having one of their "murder board" meetings when you came storming into the station.
"Well I hope you're happy!!" You looked right at Fin.
"Audition didn't go well, cannoli?" Sonny asked you using his pet name for you.
"No Sonny, it DID NOT," You huffed. "I walked in there and I blew my audition," You circled Fin’s desk. "And I don't mean I forgot the lyrics, or I hit a bad note. No no, ohhhh no," You finally stood in front of him and crossed your arms.
"Halfway through the song I broke down SOBBING. I had a complete mental breakdown, because all I could think was that I had the worst moment of my entire life in that room!!!"
"Hey you can't blame us for your mistakes," Fin retorted.
"I don't blame them, I blame you!" You gestured to the rest of your “family” and then to him.
"Excuse you?" Fin sat up straighter.
"You didn't have to say anything Fin, you really didn't," You sighed.
"What?"
"You could have waited to have your fucking temper tantrum until after my audition,"
"Excuse me no--"
"She has a point" Olivia interjected.
"You too?" Fin took offense.
"Fin she was leaving, it wasn't like she was going to try and jump Rafael's bones right there," She went on. The whole room shivered at the thought of you “jumping” anybody’s bones.
"Look, I don't love it either but you can't help your feelings. And she just has a little crush on him, you can't fault her for that,"
You scoffed in offense.
"You're not helping, sweets," Olivia warned.
"Right…"
"Anyway you could have waited to have it out, is all I’m saying,” Olivia nodded at you with a smile. You mouthed a “thank you”.
"Oh we haven't begun to have it out," Fin huffed.
"Save it" You put a hand up before he started to stand up and get in your face for a fight.
"I already know what you're going to say; he's too old for me, we're a 'family' and he's supposed to be my 'uncle' or 'brother' or some other creepy thing, and we have nothing in common. But we do!"
"You barely know him, Y/N," Nick chimed in.
"I know him better than any of you!" You cried defensively.
"What?" Sonny looked at everyone confused, but they were just as lost as he was.
"That summer….when I was working with him. We got... close," You muttered the ending.
"I fucking knew it, you did bang him begin my back…" Fin growled.
"It wasn't like that! It's not like that, da--FIN," You actually did usually call him dad or daddy, but since he had been trying to use his dominance you persisted to remind him he wasn't actually your father.
"So what, now you two are in love?" Fin rolled his eyes.
"No! He didn't... we've never….it's never gone there, and I don't even know how he feels," You looked down as you talked. But then, you remembered why you were there in the first place and you raised your head up with eyes of fire.
“And it wouldn't matter anyway because it's none of your business.” You snapped.
“It is absolutely my business Y/N he’s my co-worker, he’s ALL of our co-workers, this affects ALL of us,”
“I knew it,” You scoffed, tears coming to your eyes.
“What?”
“I knew you’d blow up, and freak out, and not even ATTEMPT to open your mind or hear what I have to say, it’s just about you and what makes you okay,” You backed away from all of them.
“So I came here willing to say that I’m done,” You raised your hands.
“What do you mean you’re ‘done’?” Fin crossed his arms.
“With you,” You replied straight faced, willing tears not to fall right now. “Olivia’s right, I can’t help the way I feel, and BELIEVE me I have tried, daddy,” You resorted to your old name for a punch in the gut.
“Y’know whenever Sonny and Nick started, I had ‘crushes’ on them too,” You nodded at the two, who quickly looked uncomfortable picturing you that way.
“But those quickly went away, and I accepted them as my uncles, or whatnot,” You continued. “I have done that since I was in Jr. High, come here and meet my new ‘family’. I’ve always felt maternal or paternal vibes from everyone here, Uncle Brian, Grandpa Kragen and Munch, Uncle Stabler who can rot in hell…” You gave Olivia a sad look.
“But it’s ALWAYS been familial love! And the day I met Rafael, something was different,” You couldn’t help the tears choking your throat. “And I have never, EVER no matter HOW hard I have tried, felt anything like I feel about the rest of you. It’s just....different,”
“And now, you all know. And I know that you don’t like it, or it makes you uneasy, or blah blah blah,” You made blah gestures with your hands.
“But I can’t go back to pretending that it doesn’t kill me every time that I see him, and I’m not going to pretend like I’m okay with dad being-- this,” You gestured to Fin who shifted uncomfortably.
“So, I’m not going to come around here, for a while,” You said sadly.
“We didn’t do anything, cannoli! We’re your family too,” Sonny protested.
“Yeah I know, I just--”
“Look, Y/N before anybody does ANYTHING, you need to go talk to Rafael,”
“What?
“WHAT?!”
Both you and Fin exclaimed at the same time.
“Look I’m not thrilled with the idea of...that, but the bottom line none of this arguing means anything if he doesn’t feel the same way. So I’m saying before you start going off and making threats to US, go talk to him first. Without anybody else’s input,”
“Yeah, alright,” You shrugged and left before anyone else could argue.
--------
You walked into Rafael’s office quietly, not really sure how to start the conversation. He was writing a deposition silently so you knocked on the door to get his attention. He looked up at you with a small smile.
“Hey you,” He got up and walked around his desk as you shut the door behind you. “I was worried about you,” He put his hands on both of your shoulders.
“I know,” You gave him a small smile back. “But you’re right we do need to talk about last night,”
“Yeah, I--” He looked away nervously.
“I already went to my da---Fin, and the squad about this,” You bit your lip.
“....About what?” He was now concerned.
“Us,” You looked at him with a small smile.
“I’m sorry, there’s an ‘us’ now?” Rafael half laughed.
“Well that’s what I’m saying, Rafael!” You bit your lip. “Look after all the fighting and what not, what it boils down to is how you and I feel,”
“.....What are you saying?” Rafael asked, backing away from you.
“I’m asking,” You step forward and took both of his hands and looked at him seriously.
“For you to forget about Fin, or the squad, or an age gap, or all the million other things that are ‘against’ us,” You took a deep breath and asked the hardest question you’ve ever asked anyone:
“I’m asking you...do you love me?”
“Of course I love you Y/N, you’re like a--” Rafael immediately responded, moving away from you and gesturing wildly.
“Do NOT say daughter,” You cut him off. “Or sister, or niece, or cousin. You know that’s not what I’m asking,” You grabbed him and made him look at you again.
“Do you want to be with me?”
“I...it’s complicated,” He broke from your hold and paced his office.
“No I’d say it’s pretty damn simple-- do you feel about me the way I feel about you?” You asked him again.
“I just...I don’t want to become between you and Fin, he’s basically your--”
“He’s NOT my father!” You yelled.
“But he’s the closest thing you have!” Rafael argued, putting his hands over his face and taking a deep sigh.
“Christ almighty, Y/N. I don’t...I don’t want this to be a whole ‘thing’, I don’t want to upset Olivia, or the other squad members, I just...want us to go back to normal,” He gave you a sad look as he sank into his chair behind his desk.
“....Yeah well, normal is not an option, Rafael. And you STILL have not answered my question,” You circled his desk to be closer to him again.
“What question?”
“Dammit, Rafa!” You threw up your hands, then took both of your hands and put them on either side of the chair preventing him from evading you again.
“Look me in the eyes right now, and tell me you’re not in love with me,”
A very long pause began, as the two of you just stared at each other. You were searching his green eyes for a hint, a tell of what he was thinking, but he kept himself very guarded. You hated it.
“...No, I’m not,” He said in the tiniest voice as he looked down at the floor.
“You’re lying,” You pulled back with a sarcastic laugh, tears choking your throat yet again.
“Oh so just because I didn’t say what you wanted me to, I’m lying? For fuck’s sake grow up, Y/N,” Rafael spat at you coldly, turning back to his desk in an attempt to resume working.
“Fine, you know what? Fine. That’s great. You believe whatever you wanna believe Rafael, but things are NOT going back to normal,” You shook your head, trying to be cold and direct but failing as tears fell from your eyes.
“Y/N….” He felt his heart breaking, he hated to see you cry.
“No,” You stopped him. “We’re done. I don’t ever want to see you again. Not here, not at the station, not at the fucking Starbucks down my street!” Your voice raised as more tears fell.
“Y/N, please don’t do this…” Rafael began to panic, realizing what you were saying. He leapt up from his chair and tried grabbing your hands but you pushed him away.
“Don’t call me, don’t text me. Just...leave me hell alone,” And with that you turned on your heels and stormed out of his office, now full on sobbing down the hall.
Unbeknownst to you, Rafael let out an angry scream, running over to his desk and flinging papers everywhere, then proceeded to sink back into his chair behind his desk and cried ever so silently in his office.
-----
It had been about a week since your whole fallout with your “family” and Barba and you weren't doing great.
Then one day you got a phone call from an unknown number.
“Hello?”
“Hey Y/N, this is Sandy from the supper club?” You immediately stopped walking when you heard her voice.
“Oh yes how are you?”
“Great, I was wondering if you could come back in and audition for us again?”
“Are you serious? I know I’m going to regret asking but, what made you change your mind?”
“Well your friend Kelsey called and told us that the day you came in and auditioned, your dog had just died that morning. But you didn't want to stand us up so you came anyway. And to be honest with you, all of the other auditions have kind of sucked so we'd like to give you another try.”
“Oh my God thank you, thank you, thank you so much!!!”
“Great so we'll see you tonight at 8:00?”
“Absolutely,”
You hung up the phone and immediately called Kelsey.
“Hello?”
“I love you so much I love you I love you I love you!”
“Oh so they called did they?”
“YES. I cannot believe that you would do that for me,”
“Well I figured you needed a win right now. Since you know you lost your family, and everybody who actually cares about you,”
“....Wow,”
“ You know what I mean! I mean you still have me, and Kenny obviously,”
“....Right. ANYWAY, the audition is tonight so….”
“Yes?”
“Will you play for me?”
“Let me see if I can free up my busy schedule,”
“Ha, Ha,”
“Oh look I’m free! I'll be there after work. Love you bye”
----
*That Night*
You walked into the Supper Club with a brand new outfit and a nervous smile. You noticed Kelsey was already at the piano, waving at you with a huge smile and a thumbs up.
“Hey Sandy, Hey Kyle…” You shook hands with the owners. “Thank you so much again for this chance,
“Girl we should be thanking you, you should’ve seen the ‘talent’ that has stunk up this stage all week!” Kyle laughed.
“So are you ready?” Sandy asked you.
“Yeah, I think I’m good,” You took a deep breath and smiled at her. She nodded at you while you took your spot on stage once again.
You closed your eyes and blocked out everything and everyone out of your mind, except for your song. It was just you, and the stage. This is what mattered.
-----
“....Good to you,” You finished the last line with a breathy note, your eyes still closed. You had kept them shut the entire time just so you wouldn’t look out into the house and just see the horrified looks of your family's faces burned into your brain.
“That was beautiful!!” Sandy clapped her hands. “Do you think you could come back tomorrow night and do that again?”
“Like for a second audition?” You asked hopefully.
“Like as a job,” She grinned back.
“Really?!”
“Yes really! That was enchanting darling, really,” Kyle placed a hand on your shoulder.
“Thank you, thank you so much!” You nodded for Kelsey to come over as Sandy and Kyle walked away.
“I got the job,” You beamed.
“YOU GOT THE JOB!!!!” She squealed, causing people to stare. You shook your head and lead her out of the club back onto the street.
“Oh my god, Oh my GOD! I’m going to sing to a packed club, night after night after night! Oh my god, I have to call Dad---” Your celebrating tone quickly died when you realized the only people you’d wanna call about this weren’t...there.
“...You can call Kenny,”
“Kenny!” You smiled. “Yes I’ll call Kenny!”
“Hey girl what’s up?”
“I got the job,”
“Wha---at the Supper Club?”
“YES!!!!!!”
“Oh my god you GOT THE JOB!!!” *she got the job!*
You heard him speak to a muffled voice in the background.
“Kenny…”
“Yeah babe what’s up?”
“Who are you with right now?”
“...Alejandro,”
“Oh, Alex! I haven’t seen him in forever, put him on the phone,”
“He uh-- he has food in his mouth,”
“Boy why you lying, tell her she needs to--”
You heard Fin's voice.
“KENNETH,”
“...Yeah?”
“Don’t tell him that! He doesn’t get to know that!”
“Y/N, can’t we just stop all of this--”
“NO. And if you tell him to come tomorrow night I will kill you,”
You hung the phone and noticed Kelsey giving you a look.
“What?” You raised an eyebrow.
“You didn’t have to tell him you were singing tomorrow, you could’ve just texted him so Fin wouldn’t hear,” She smiled mischievously at you. “You want him thereeee,”
"...Maybe," You bit your lip. "Do you think he'll come?"
"I bet they ALL come, baby girl," She winked.
You wondered if she was right. If you'd see Rafael tomorrow, after all this time.
------
“I can’t believe she--” Kenneth stared at the phone, then to Fin.
“Dad, you have to go to her show tomorrow night,”
“Kenny she literally just said she’d kill you--”
“Yeah but dad, we both know her,” He looked at Fin with earnest eyes. “She might be mad at you right now, but she’ll want you there when her dream is coming true,” Fin’s eyes lit up as he finished speaking.
“AND the rest of the squad,” He quickly added, making Fin sigh.
“Yeah,” He agreed.
“AND Barba,”
“...Yeah alright Ken I get it, okay? Finish your food before it gets cold,”
-----
The next day Fin went to see Barba at his office. He knocked softly then entered to see Barba talking with Olivia.
“Detective,” Barba nodded. “Didn’t expect you here, was Olivia not working fast enough?” He teased Liv with a smile.
“Actually I’m glad you’re both here. I need to tell the rest of the guys but-- I wanted to come here first,”
“That sounds ominous, Fin,”
“Actually it’s not,” He shook his head. “Y/N got that job she...auditioned for, a few weeks ago,” He muttered awkwardly not looking Barba in the face.
“Wha--Seriously? How? When?!” Olivia began asking questions rapid fire.
“....Why did you come to tell me this, Fin? You didn’t know Olivia was here,”
“Look, Barba,” Fin sighed, running his hand back across his head. “I don’t-- I don’t need to know the specifics of how close you and my daug---Y/N, are,”
“Oh Fin look I haven’t--”
“Yeah, I figured. She’s iced us all out for a while now,” He chuckled sadly. If he taught you anything, it was how to stand your ground.
“But Kenny said, that as mad as she is we need to be there tomorrow night when she goes on,” He continued. “All of us,”
“Tomorrow?” Barba’s eyes perked up. “Tomorrow night, you want me to go see Y/N?”
“ALL of us,” He emphasized. “But, yeah,”
“Sounds good,” He replied as nonchalant as he could, trying to hide his excitement. He missed you so badly, it scared him how much it hurt not to have you in his life on a daily basis.
“Uh huh,” Fin chuckled, nodding to Olivia. “I’ll see you back at the station,”
“Actually I was on my way out, I’ll see you tomorrow night Rafa,” She winked at him.
As soon as they left his office, Rafael did a fist pump in the air like a kid. He was going to see you, after so long.
He couldn’t wait. He just hoped you couldn’t either.

the bachelorette: chp 2 part 2
Tumblr media
an: hey guys! sorry for taking so long! here's the masterlist if needed.
tags: black!reader, fem coded reader, I finished this late at night so, it's just a whole lot of nonsense
tag list: @taybird
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After an hour of chatting and filling yourself up with food, you needed a nap. You hoped that you wouldn't fall into a sleep so deep that you'd never go to the show. It'd be a bummer.
You ended up sleeping for two hours, right when Levi had entered your room to tell you to get ready. He looked tired, the boys were probably bothering him.
Once Levi left your room, you took another bath. Once you were done with that, you brushed your teeth and moisturized. Moments later, you let your team know it was ok to enter your room and help you with your outfit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Satisfied with your choice of clothing, you started on your makeup.
You were excited about this date. Levi told you that you, Mikasa, and the guys were going to watch Aladdin. Not only was it familiar but it was romantic. The thought about who you might eliminate crossed your mind but you continuously shake your head to forget about it
Tumblr media
When you entered a seating room where your dates and Mikasa were located. The first thing you noticed was Jean, Eren, and Mikasa chatting. Well, not exactly. Jean, dressed in a suit vest, along with a suit jacket and pants, was sitting on the armrest of the seat that Mikasa was sitting in, and Eren, in a green sweater vest and dark blue dress pants was sitting on the couch across from Mikasa. The boys were chatting about something you had no idea about and Mikasa didn't seem like she had much to say. She gave them both of her attention and seemed interested in what they had to say.  You just hoped that she hadn't gained the attention of either man. The game wasn't over yet.
Bertholdt and Reiner weren't too far from the other three. Bertholdt was in a blue sweater with a white dress shirt underneath and khaki pants. Reiner was in a green dress shirt that showed off a bit of his chest and dark pants. The two were having a conversation of their own but then stopped when they saw you.
"Hi, y/n," Bertholdt greets you. You really liked his energy. On your first night with all the guys, you learned that Bertholdt was a really shy guy (and you almost eliminated him because of that) but after a few words between the two of you, you realized he was a really really nice guy. He was too nice. There was no way the other guys could pick a fight with him.
Jean and Eren stop conversing to look up at you. A smile immediately appeared on Jean's face. "You look nice, y/n," Eren jumps in. Your heart jumped slightly. You managed to hold a conversation with him but damn, that man was so fine. But so was Jean...and Bertholdt...and Reiner. There was no way you'd be able to eliminate those guys.
"Hi!" you manage to get out. "Levi told me we were going to watch Aladdin. I'm pretty excited about that...and you guys have not choice but to be excited either."
The guys let out a laugh. Mikasa had her signature emotionless face on but you knew she was laughing on the inside.
"Before we go, I wanted to discuss seating with you guys." You tried not to think about this because it made you feel nervous. Only two guys would be able to sit by you and two others would have to sit with Mikasa. You were worried that one of the guys would take it the wrong way or that Mikasa would manage to steal one of the guys from you.
"For this date, I'd like Eren and Jean to sit with Mikasa. I see you two a lot and you always stop by to talk to me, so maybe it's time for a break," you explain. "Aw, Jean, she's breaking up with us," Eren says in a jokingly sad tone. Jean shakes his head and chuckles. "That's fine, y/n, and it makes sense. We do have to share."
You're so grateful that they understand. You look over to Bertholdt and Reiner. Bertholdt's face is already red. "You two will be sitting. with me. Is that ok, Bertie?" Bertholdt freezes and Reiner pats his friend's lap. "He'll be alright. He's never been this close to a woman before."
"T-That's not true," Bertholdt finally says. You thought the way he got flustered was so cute. "The limo's outside, so it's best that we get going, yeah?" you say.
Tumblr media
The minute you got to the theatre. You were met with paparazzi. Bertholdt was taken by surprise, so you took his hand once he got out of the limo. You knew this was going to start a conversation but you needed this man to chill out. Fortunately, Bertholdt did not have a meltdown when you held his hand.
He was a good boy for the rest of the night as well. When the first act of the show was reaching its end, you held his hand once more. He took his eyes off the show to give you a small smile. He seemed to be comfortable with you now.
During intermission, you decided to excuse yourself and head to the bathroom. Mikasa followed you- there was no way she was going to left with four women hungry boys.
"You have a favorite?" you ask, referring to the boys. Mikasa's eyes widen. "You have a favorite. Wow, Mikasa."
"y/n, don't be mad...I...Eren is cute and so is Jean but I want to wait. If one of those guys goes home, I won't hesitate to get their numbers."
"Mikasa, you're terrible," you say, trying to hold in your laughter. You tried to be pissed but Mikasa was way too cute. The fact that she was eyeing two of your "boyfriends" was concerning but the fact that she admitted it and the way she did was hilarious.
Tumblr media
During the second and final act, you decided to try your little hand trick with Reiner. You waited until he seemed focused on the story to place your hand on top of his. You realized how big his hand was. It wasn't bigger than Bertie's but it was something. He must have noticed how distracted you were by his hands because when you looked up, he was smirking at you. Right then and there, Reiner intertwines your fingers and they remain like that the rest of the show.
After the performance, you all got an opportunity to go backstage and meet the performers. A few of them told you that you were beautiful, others were interested in what guy you would pick. Before you all left, there was a request to take a group photo.
Jean stood behind you and put a hand around your back. He looked down at you. "Is this ok?" You nod. Jean's hand filled your whole back. This guy could pick you up and throw you somewhere if he wanted. But of course, he was too kind. You looked over at Eren, who had this hand over Mikasa. You were beginning to feel suspicious until you saw that Reiner had his hand around Mikasa's waist. Reiner couldn't possibly be into Mikasa, right?
That was something you had to sleep on.
Tumblr media
The ride home was silent- other than Mikasa's soft snores and Eren's loud ones. The two had fallen asleep on each other. Every time Eren snored, it just got louder and the rest of you couldn't contain your laughter. Jean had his phone out, recording this whole thing because "at some point, the world needs to see who Eren Yeager really is". You had tears rolling down your face because this was really stupid but funny at the same time.
When you got to the mansion, Reiner helped you out of the car. Jean asked about Eren and Mikasa but you told him not to worry about them. They'd figure themselves out. Reiner and Jean wished you goodnight and began to make their way inside. Bertie stayed behind.
"Is everything alright? I know things were a bit overwhelming today," you start.
"Yeah, but you really helped me out. So thank you. I'm working on myself because I really want to have some alone time with you. I need to have the courage to face you though."
"Aw, Bertholdt. You're perfect. I like you just the way you are," you reassure him.
"You said my name right."
"You're right, I did."
Bertholdt looks like he wants to say something but he doesn't.
Instead, he kisses you.
"B-bertholdt..."
"I should have asked for permission first," he says sheepishly.
"No! It was ok...I just wasn't expecting that from you," you admit. "Head inside ok? I'll make sure we talk after the Rose ceremony."
Bertholdt nods and gives you one more look before heading inside.
Yeah, none of these guys were going to go home
(SPACER)
damn I didn't know Bertie had moves like that 😭 anyways y'all, here's a poll. it's not an elimination one but I miss hearing y'all's thoughts. take a look! until next time :)

--------------
Rowan is exhausted by the time he reaches his apartment—the sleepless nights catching up to him. He has had a bad week and he is looking forward to spending his weekend locked up in his bedroom when the sound of a text makes him groan to himself. Rowan only knows one person who still texts him, aware of his dislike for texting. He pulls his phone out to see a message from Aelin: I need a favour. Rowan is tempted to ignore the message but given her hatred for him, it has to be something important if she asked.
He replies: What have you done now? She is a little hellion after all. Rowan regrets the day he agreed to go on a blind date with her.
Lysandra insisted they go on a date together and he had always thought she was beautiful and he'd agreed. The date had gone horrible as could be. Rowan showed up late because of traffic, the food was cold and tasteless and Rowan managed to forget his wallet home. In hopes of redeeming himself, he proposed a romantic walk around the beach and get ice cream except the ice cream shop was closed and it rained, drenching them both in cold water. As if it wasn't bad enough, his car broke down in the middle of nowhere when he tried to drop her off. Ever since, Aelin texts him after every date to give tips on how to not be a total disaster.
And gods, the woman can get under his skin like no one else ever has.
His phone rings, Aelin's name flashing on his screen before he picks up, grateful that for once she decided not to text. She says by way of greeting, "Look, I ran into my ex and mentioned I have a boyfriend. He thinks I'm shitting him and I need you to come "pick me up" so I can shove our relationship in his face. Pleaseeee?" Rowan isn't sure if he's more annoyed or amused.
He settles on amused. "And why do you need me for this? Why only me?"
Aelin huffs in annoyance and there's complete silence on the other line before she admits, "I bragged a little too much about how hot he is and now, no one fits the bill but you." Yep, definitely amused.
"You think I'm hot?"
"You know you're hot. You shouldn't need me to tell you that." Another huff from her side. "So will you help or not?"
Rowan considers it. The idea of hanging up is tempting but she's desperate. He doesn't need her hating him more. "Maybe, just maybe, if I get a free drink, I might consider talking to you." He sits up, still dressed well enough to pick up his girlfriend. "I'll charge extra for pretending to be a perfect boyfriend."
"Name your price."
Rowan only smiles. "I'll let you know when I get there."
The nightclub Aelin's at is close enough to his apartment that it takes less than fifteen minutes to get there. It's an expensive place for people with lavish tastes—the kind Rowan would never be caught dead at. Everything from drinks to decorations screams Aelin. He's not surprised this is the club she hangs out at. It's as ridiculous and fancy and over-the-top as her. He spots her leaning against a wall, her face turned towards someone.
She wears an off-shouldered black dress with a dangerously high slit in it. Her blonde hair tied in an elegant side bun, she looks prettier than he remembered.
She looks in the middle of a tense, unwanted conversation when Rowan arrived. "Aelin! There you are." He hopes his smile is convincing enough.
Rowan doesn't like the way she looks with her arms crossed over her chest in a defensive manner, her lips pressed into a thin line and eyes trained on the floor. She has shrunk into herself, made herself small and fragile and timid. She looks unlike the fiery spirit who sends him tips on how to plan a good date every so often just out of spite because he fucked up one evening of her life months ago. He decides immediately that he hates whoever makes her feel like this person in front of him because this is certainly not the Aelin he knows.
To his pleasure, Aelin relaxes the moment she notices him. "Rowan! Just the guy I wanted to see." Then she rises on her toes, kissing him on the cheek.
Rowan hoped he looked better than he felt, his insides in a turmoil even once Aelin pulled back. "Sorry I'm late, love. Traffic was insane."
She placed a comforting hand on his arm, jerking her chin towards her companion. "Ro, that's Chaol Westfall. Chaol, this is Rowan. My boyfriend." As if to back her words up, she puts an arm around his waist and pulls him closer. Rowan lets her do as she pleases.
Chaol extends a hand. "Nice to meet you, Rowan. Aelin talks about you a lot."
"Yeah? She didn't mention you much and that's saying something considering we've been dating for almost ten months now." That was around the time the two of them went on that damned date. Chaol couldn't have dated her after the whole thing because thanks to Aelin's insulting little tips, he knows about all the guys she's gone on a date with and if he's as bad as he seems, he'd have remembered Aelin talking about him.
One look at her confirms his suspicions. Aelin quirks an eyebrow when he brings her a drink. You're having too much fun with this whole thing.
Yeah, well, Rowan shrugs, I might as well enjoy this. The guy's an asshole.
Aelin nods, taking another sip of her drink as the three of them decided to sit down for drinks. Rowan is feeling underdressed in this place, especially with Aelin looking like a literal goddess by his side.
Chaol beats around the bush with easy questions about his job and all until: "No offense, Rowan, but you don't seem like Aelin's usual type."
"None taken. People's tastes do tend to improve over time." Aelin chokes on her drink and Rowan feels a little bad for being mean to a man he barely knows but then he remembers the way Aelin looked when he entered and the flushed look on Chaol's face makes his forget about all the shit he's had to deal with this week. He probably shouldn't be having as much fun with this as he is.
Aelin loops an arm around Rowan's. "I think we should go home now." She downs the rest of her shot in one big gulp before rising from her seat.
She turns towards Rowan, eyes shining under the dim lights of the private booth. She smells of alcohol and something sweet and floral—jasmine, maybe?—eyes shining alight with a question he can read in her eyes, a small smile playing on her lips. Can I kiss you?Rowan can feel Chaol's eyes fixed on his back but when he nods, he finds that it has little to do with pissing a stranger off and a lot to do with Aelin.
Aelin kisses him and his whole world erupts into fireworks. From the second their lips touch, there's only her and her lips and her hands roving his back and that gods damned scent driving him insane. He doesn't know why she's kissing him but Rowan is not kissing her to piss someone off or to prove a point. He wonders how this evening would've played out if that night hadn't gone to shit—if this kiss would have been real instead of pretend, if they would have lasted ten months. He's terrified of finding out.
Rowan almost groans when he pulls back. The grin on her face strikes him stupid. She whispers in his ear, "How's that for payment?" Aelin grabs his hand, leading him out of the club.
He doesn't spare a look at Chaol, doesn't miss a single beat as he replies: "Hmm, I need more for all the insults I pulled." They are almost outside when Rowan continues, "How about a chance? I want a chance to change your mind. You, me, another date. I'm sorry the last one went as bad as it did and you probably hate me and you're gonna say no, of course—"
"I don't hate you."
He's not sure he heard her right. "Huh?"
"I don't hate you," Aelin repeats. "None of that was your fault. It was a bad day is all. I waited two weeks for you to ask me out again to make up for it though. When you didn't, I took matters into my own hands to text you about the only thing I could think of."
Rowan gapes. "Pardon? You're telling me the whole tips ploy was what? A ruse?" His mouth hangs open.
"To keep us talking, yes. Besides, it was fun pissing you off," Aelin says.
He did always think it was strange how for someone who claimed to be so mad about having wasted one evening on a bad date, she sure spent a lot of time sending him tips and bantering with him over texts afterwards. He had apologized to her numerous times afterwards but he'd never considered that she might still want another date. To think of all the months he'd wasted.
He shakes his head but he's smiling. "Will you go on a date with me, Aelin?"
She chuckles, face brightening. "I can honestly say there's nothing I want more." As the two of them part ways, Aelin kisses him on the cheek. Rowan watches her leave silently, a big smile on his face. No more wasting time, he promises himself.

Word count: 2,026
Author’s Note: I’m not gonna lie, this story means a lot to me. I was never sure if I’d start posting it or not. Simone has been an OC of mine for a long time now and when the idea to pair her with Rio popped into my mind I knew it could be something very special. I hope you all enjoy the journey. As always questions, comments, and concerns are welcome! Might even start a tag list but we’ll see. Thanks for reading. xo
Tumblr media
Rio stared out of the window, looking out at his investment. It had the perfect eye line for all the exits and it had the best view of the stage. Since he began flipping his game and moving up in the world he became acquainted with folks that had different tastes than him. The opportunity to invest in this club kind of fell in his lap. His new co-owner was a sloppy prick, but Rio couldn’t deny the club was bringing in a nice grip of money for him. He liked the anonymity of being a silent partner. Every two weeks he’d roll through, check up on the club, and collect some cash to put into his other businesses.
As he looked down at all the club goers, he was pleased to see the place was pretty packed. He was not happy to see the owner, Shaun, with two women on his arm. This wasn’t a social hour. He was here for business. Mick, his right hand man, was guarding the door and hadn’t moved an inch to let Shaun in.
“Hey man. Place is poppin tonight right?” Shaun greeted Rio as he tried to maneuver past Mick who only moved at Rio’s nod. “Enjoying your night? These are a couple lady friends of mine. Say ‘hi’ ladies.”
“Hi.” The two girls parroted at Rio, waving at him.
Rio didn’t bother greeting the women. “Get rid of the bitches man.”
“What?” Shaun asked, his tone confused.
“I ain’t gonna tell you twice.” Rio’s face hadn’t changed. He just stared Shaun down.
Shaun cleared his throat and whispered something to the ladies before they shuffled back out of the room. It was quiet except for the sound of the music pumping through the speakers.
“My bad man. They were sexy as hell though right? Can you really blame me?” Shaun tried to excuse, a smile on his face as he walked over to where Rio was standing.
As soon as he was within arms reach, Rio gripped the back of his neck tightly and pulled him close. He stared directly in his eyes. “Don’t ever bring nobody to one of our meetings again. I choose to keep you on, but that can easily be changed. Get my money and stop fucking playing with me.”
Shaun merely nodded and Rio let go of him. Shaun tried adjusting his suit and cleared his throat. He walked over to the wall that was furthest from the window and opened a panel in the door. He put the code into the panel and opened it up. There was a silver case inside that he pulled out before closing the door back. “Business has been better than ever. I was able to add a permanent residency here that has us packed every week. We may even be able to up prices a bit.”
Rio’s eyebrow quirked in interest at the man’s words. “Permanent residency?”
Shaun had set the case on the table and Mick opened it, starting to count the money that was inside. Rio walked closer to take a look inside and noticed that there seemed to be a couple more stacks than usual.
“Yeah. I’m still having different live performers come in, but people also like consistency. They like knowing they’re coming to hear quality music. And the pipes on this one? Massive. Doesn’t hurt that she’s gorgeous too.”
Rio would never admit it but he was definitely intrigued. “Who is she?”
Shaun walked back over to the window and smirked as he looked down. “Simone Dunn. Lucky for you, you came at the perfect time.”
Rio noticed the club music had shut off and people were clapping. As he walked to stand next to Shaun, a slow instrumental was playing. A soft spotlight appeared on the stage and the crowd’s clapping intensified. A giggle was heard over the mic.
“Aww, y’all are too good to me.” The woman’s voice was clear as day, but had an alluring quality. She had big black hair falling over her shoulders in waves. Her dress was pink and it gave a tantalizing view of her breasts as well as her full figure. Her skin was creamy brown and the outline of her ass was particularly appealing to Rio.
Tumblr media
“We’re starting off grown and sexy tonight y'all. So if you’re vibing with someone, gon’ head and pull ‘em a little closer. I’m just tryna help y’all possibly end the night on a good note, if you know what I mean.” She winked at the crowd and people laughed as others hollered and whistled.
A familiar beat reached Rio’s ears, taking him back to house parties in his old neighborhood. He remembered talking slick to a fine girl as she danced on him, knowing she was gon let him fuck by the end of the night.
I'll always think of you Inside of my private thoughts I can imagine you Touching my private parts And just the thought of you I can't help but touch myself That's why I want you so bad Just one night of
The sultry sound of her voice traveled from Rio’s ears straight to his dick. He watched as her hips moved side to side as she gripped the mic stand. She was a temptress, an enchantress. Hell, she was a siren and her song was the one calling him home. Home being the absolute treasure he was sure is hiding between her thighs.
Can't get my mind off you I think I might be obsessed The very thought of you Makes me want to get undressed I want to be with you In spite of what my heart says I guess I want you too bad All I want is
Her eyes were locking onto different people in the crowd. She was working her magic on everyone. People were partnered up and there was lots of grinding happening on the dance floor. As she looked around, her eyes happened to dart up and land on his. She looked taken aback, but curious. She never once stopped singing and now it seemed like she was singing the words directly to him.
“She’s a beauty, ain’t she?” Shaun asked, but Rio ignored him. His eyes were still locked with Simone’s as she sang. A smile pulled at her lips and her cheeks felt hot so she pulled her eyes away from him to look back toward the crowd. She missed the quick smile that appeared on Rio’s face before he turned his back to the window.
“Have you had any trouble here? Fights? Anyone tryna shake you down?” Rio asked Shaun, who looked perplexed by the sudden topic shift.
“No. I would have called you right away. Like I said, things have been great. Should I be worried or on the lookout?” Shaun asked, his tone taking on a nervous quality.
“Nah, man. Just looking out for my investment. Enjoy your night with your lady friends.” Rio dismissed the other man and Shaun took the exit without hesitation.
“You think they know you got dealings in this place?” Mick asked, once Shaun was gone.
“No, but you can never be too careful.” Rio replied, eyes drifting back toward the stage. She had begun singing a new song. Something a bit more fast paced. “I wanna keep this place as legit as possible. We need something clean in case we run into some trouble. But I aint scared of them. I’ll deal with ‘em when the time’s right.”
Mick merely nodded his head as he finished up the count.
“Everything square?” At Mick’s confirmation, Rio walked over to him. “Go ahead and take everything back to the warehouse. Imma stay and check things out for a bit. Have a drink. I’ll call you in the morning.”
Rio headed down to the bar and got himself a shot of brandy. He nursed his drink as he finished listening to the performance going on. He was in the middle of texting some associates to set up meetings for the next week when applause broke out all around him. He looked up to see Simone walking towards the bar, blowing kisses as she went.
“Ji, baby! Please get me one last malibu pineapple and I’ll love you forever.” She exclaimed, taking a seat one away from Rio. He was watching her interaction with the bartender.
“You better already love me.” The bartender, Ji-hoon, retorted even as he went about making her drink.
“You know I do boo.” She winked, a wide grin on her face. “In fact, I love you so much that I’m leaving you a big tip tonight.”
“Are you trying to buy me? Cause I’m absolutely up for sale.” He smiled, sliding her drink over to her as he leaned on the bar. He glanced over at Rio and nodded his head towards him. “Hey, you need to be topped off?”
“Yeah, man.” Rio answered and Simone finally noticed him sitting there. Ji poured Rio another drink before getting distracted on the other side of the bar by other paying customers.
Simone made eye contact with him before looking down at her drink and swishing the glass around.
“You have a beautiful voice, mama.”
“Thank you. I appreciate that.” She looked up at him with a smile on her face.
“Interesting choice of song too. I know a couple people here gotta be happy about the assist you gave them.”
She laughed and shook her head. “Anything for my fans.”
“Anything?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Within reason.” She quickly added.
“So you’ll let me buy your drink, then.”
It was her turn to raise an eyebrow and she turned around in her stool to face him, legs crossed and her silver heels shining. “So you’re a fan?”
“I am now.”
“I’ve had an open tab all night and I just promised Jian a big tip.”
“Okay.” He shrugged, and her eyes narrowed.
“And what do you want in return for so graciously picking up my tab?”
A smirk appeared on Rio’s face and he slid one bar stool over to be closer to her. Their eyes never left one another. “I’d love to have a conversation with one of the sexiest women I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Her lights lit up in surprise and delight at his words. That soft smile of hers, returning to her face. “I guess I could swing that. So what’s your name?”
“It’s Rio, sweetheart. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Rio….I like it. I see you’re familiar with Shaun. Y’all friends or something?”
“Or something.” He answered, taking a sip of his drink.
“Or something. That’s not mysterious at all.” She joked.
“I aint no mystery baby. What you see is what you get.”
She snorted. “That’s what they all say.”
“Who?”
“Boys.” She retorted, finishing her drink.
“I’m all man and I’d love to demonstrate just how much of a man I am.”
She looked back over to him and there was a delicious smirk on his face. No one man should be able to look like that. It’s too much power. “Tempting, but I have plans.”
“At 2 in the morning?” He asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
“Is that judgment I hear in your tone Mr. ‘I-Can’t-Say-How-I-Know-Shaun?’”
Rio had to chuckle. “You got me there.”
She checked her phone and sighed at the time. “I gotta go, but it was nice meeting you Rio. Hope to see you again.” She then asked Ji-hoon to hand her the bag that was hidden behind the bar.
“You will.” He asserted, wondering why she didn’t use the employee lockers he remembered being installed. The thought was erased from his mind by her leaning into his personal space. His hand immediately went to her waist and his fingers grazed the top of her ass.
“I’m counting on it.” She whispered in his ear, before walking away and waving at a couple people as she went. He watched her the whole time and it wasn’t until she reached the exit that she turned her head to look back at him. He knew he had her.

“You want to marry me?” You asked, staring at the ring in the opened box. Somehow, the photos just did not do the shine and gleam justice. A deep breath escaped before dragging your eyes to his, standing off his lap while he watched with a hopeful yet confused expression.
“Yes, I do.” Your brows furrowed in a weird sense of disbelief while watching him. The gears turning in your head were gaining speed while you stood still. His own stature deflating at your lack of response. He watched a moment more before finding words to say.
“Hey,” he urged. “Say something.” He stood from the bed, resting the ring on the sheets before focusing his attention back to you.
Your head bowed to your feet, or tried to. Before he could get another desperate word out, the sound of your pitiful voice stopped him in his tracks once again.
“Is it because I’m pregnant?” You whispered.
“What?” He immediately exclaimed. “What! No, no it-it, God, no it is not because you are pregnant.”
“Oh. Okay.”
“Do you know how long I have wanted to do this? It took months to get this ring made!” His arms flailed with an expression of angst and anxiety. “I had to go to meetings for this ring. I have been carrying it around because I couldn’t find a right way to ask! Or a right time, and maybe, maybe this wasn’t the right time to ask or the right way and I’m sorry about that, but that doesn’t change the fact that I want to marry you. I want to marry you. I’ve wanted to marry you for so long. So long.”
You sat back on the bed watching, waiting for him to continue, or finish, or do what he needed to do to process the question you asked. Though you knew the answer, and knew him, you just had to ask, though it felt silly, stupid to worry about now while listening to him.
“I asked your father!” He tossed out catching your attention. “I’ve wanted this for so long. We were in the garage, I was talking to him, and to Ty. You came strolling out there and interrupting-” Your eyes grew wide at the thought and memory. “- don’t, don't worry about it. But that's how long. Your dad knew. I’m sure he thought I was out of my mind, maybe he still does because I had only known you a few months at the time but it didn't matter to me. I knew.”
You suddenly remembered your mouth was open and it snapped shut.
“Things just happened, and kept happening. And the stupid board, I was going to do it when Ty was there but it just wasnt the right time.” His rate of speech started to slow, a weight slowly lifting from his chest when he really looked at you again, listening to him. “It was never going to be the right time. And no, it is not because you are pregnant.”
“Ask me again.” You told him, grabbing the ring from the bed and walking it to where he had ended his pacing, placing it in his hand.
“What?”
“Just ask me again, Chris.”
“Uh,” he said with a small panic looking around himself and to the ground, not knowing what to do, “Okay.”
His stature stuttered a moment before quickly lowering himself on one knee while you bit back a laugh at his disorientation. He quickly tried to gather himself, fixing his shirt and rubbing his hands down his thighs. It was there, in the bedroom of this boring and bland condo, where the both of you were starving for dinner and eyes red from tears, that he started more rambling.
“I promise to love you, to be there for you, to go everywhere with you. I promise we will make it to Paris, and we will make a home ours, where ever you want - with enough bedrooms and your parents can come visit whenever and they can have a room and the kids can go to a school, and we’ll live together and I’ll do the laundry, and I can cook all the time, and you can get your hair done whenever you want, and I promise to be at every doctor’s appointment -”
“Chris.”
“I know, I know,” he hurried.  “Will you marry me?”
“Yes.”
“Yes?”
“Yea.”
~
“So you never answered my question,” he interrupted the comfortable silence. The ring had both of your focus for a moment more while you sat next to him, his arm slung over your shoulder. You pulled forward from the headboard and gave him a crazy eye.
“What more do you want me to say?” A chuckle escaped your lips as you questioned him.
A lazy smirk grew against his lips, “I had messaged you earlier if you were in the mood to go out for food. And I am still hungry so-”
“You are always hungry,” you retorted, matching his bliss. “But yes, I am in the mood for food.”
The next few days went by too fast, as it always does. Only four days later your favorite three munchkins were running around the apartment, creating all the noise you probably could go without, but wouldn’t change for the world. The first night, in one of the two spare rooms, you were tucking in India. It was more like laying in bed with her, most likely keeping her more awake than tired. With the furrow of her brows and a sad tone in her voice, she questioned if she would see her classmates again. You couldn't exactly tell her yes because it was unsure how long it would be before you were back there long enough for her to enroll in school again. The puppy eyes she gave brought back up a guilt that never went away after rooting for her to have the school experience.
“You know how papa is always traveling?” You pulled the blanket closer to her shoulders while she stared across the boringly decorated room in a bed that is way too big for her. That would have to change soon.
“He works with so many people, and then after awhile, he leaves and works with a new group of people. He never forgets them, I guarantee it. And in return, they will never forget them. That's just how friendships work. Sometimes we meet new people and have new experiences, but that does not meet we forget who we met before! How I think about it is, we are going out in the world to find new friends, and more people to love. We don’t have to forget them.”
“They won’t forget me either, right?” She worried.
“Oh no, of course not. I moved away too, ya know. I moved allllllll the way across the ocean,” you exaggerated with the span of your arms. “And I still keep in contact with some friends I went to school with. They were my true friends who were always kind to me. Your true classmates will go out of their way to stay friends with you.”
“Is Ty your true friend?”
“Well he’s my brother, so I don’t think he counts.” She giggled as you pointed to the door where her brothers were across the hall with their father. “Are those two sillies your best friends?” You prompted her.
“Ya. Sometimes!”
“Oh I know you love your brothers. Those crazy boys…” you sighed as she nestled in a little further with a drowsy yawn letting loose. A moment of silence ensued. You were sure she was thinking hard.
Her eyes were getting heavier as she was fighting sleep. “Do I get another brother, or is the little baby going to be a sister?” She asked quietly.
“I dunno. What do you think?”
“Well obviously I hope that they are my sister because I don’t need another brother.” Even tired, the little girl leaked sass. You chuckled and gave a “we’ll see,” before wishing her a goodnight and creeping away from the kids bedrooms.

I'm gonna be posting the chapters I have done and updating my masterlist. I won't be tagging anyone but if you do find time read, I hope to hear what you think about it. As always, hope y'all are staying safe, and please go get vaccinated.
Meet the Parents Part 2
T’Challa checked his watch before turning back to the television. Alix had been getting ready for a long time. He was more than ready to head to dinner with his mother and Shuri. Alix as usual was taking her sweet time finding something to wear. It seemed to be taking a little longer today, and T’Challa knew it was the nerves. He finally got up and headed to the bedroom to find Alix on the floor in one of his T-shirts. He smiled a bit at the site but also knew that meant his closet had been raided and was probably a mess.
“Alixandre, may I ask why you are on the floor in my shirt while this room looks like a tornado has made a visit” Alix rolled her eyes before turning to look at him.
“I can’t find anything to wear”
“That is because your closet is a mess”
“No! It’s because nothing fits! I look like a beachball!” T’challa took a step back sensing her frustration.
“Okay, how about you and I work on this together?” he said, kneeling down to help her up.
“As much as sitting here sulking feels like the preferred option I cannot let you do that so how about we get up and find something that I know you will look amazing in. Plus I am looking with non-judgemental eyes”
“Fine” She reached down to grab a couple of the options she didn’t completely hate and dropped them on the bed next to where T’challa had decided to sit. She looked at him as though she was waiting for something.
“What is it?”
“Close your eyes I can’t change in front of you.” T’Challa rolled his eyes.
“Alix you can easily go to the bathroom, but to be honest there really isn’t anything I haven’t seen before,” He said with a smirk as Alix threw a piece of clothing at him.
“I don’t care. Close your eyes T’Challa” T’Challa continued to smile at how flustered she was becoming. “T’Challa now!”
“Okay, okay, okay” She slipped on the first look and faced him before tapping him to see.
“I think you look lovely, but you seem a little uncomfortable and the restaurant we are going to is a bit more formal.”
“I thought as much” She stared at T’Challa waiting for him to close his eyes
“Oh, right I forgot” She smiled softly before picking another dress and tapping T’Challa. He slowly opened his eyes and was immediately enamoured with Alix’s beauty.
“So are you going to just stare or are you going to say something” T’Challa blinked a few times before speaking
“Alix you look absolutely stunning. Just so much beauty that my words are lost” Alix smiled but looked away. “However, this is too formal. It is not a wedding, just dinner.”
She rolled her eyes, making T'Challa laugh as he closed his eyes.
“Okay, you can open now” T’Challa opened and smiled.
“I think we have a winner. You look gorgeous”
“You said that about every look,” Alix said, turning for T’Challa to help with the zipper while smoothing down her dress.
“And I was not lying, he said with a kiss on her shoulder. Plus you look comfortable in this one”
“Okay fashion critic, the show is over. Maybe you should start coming with me to the shop since you love everything” She joked
“I would be honoured. Now finish getting ready so we can go please.” T’Challa said before exiting the room. Leaving Alix to have to sit to gather her thoughts. She didn’t understand how someone could be so unintentionally sweet, yet it was one of her favourite qualities about T’Challa.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alix peaked over at T’Challa as he drove, he looked calm, meanwhile, she felt like she was holding a huge breath that she wasn’t sure when she could release.
“So, I guess it is my turn to ask but is there anything about your mom or sister that I need to know that I don’t already” T’Challa glanced at her quickly and could feel the nervousness radiating off of Alix. He grabbed her hand and kissed it.
“ Don’t worry, you will be fine. My mother is very sweet, and will only ask you questions to try and get to know you. As for Shuri” He smiled before continuing “You will love her, she is the funniest and smartest person I know. But do not tell her I said that. It makes her head big”
“Sounds like someone I know,” Alix joked as T’Challa laughed. “So your father, he couldn’t make it then?”
T’Challa grew quiet as he carefully thought about what to say.
“Baba had a meeting that he would not - I mean could not miss. That he could not miss“ T’Challa grew quiet as he tried to steady his face to avoid showing any of the pain that his father’s disapproval brought him. Alix looked over and grabbed his forearm in an attempt to comfort him.
“No one said merging worlds was easy right?”
T’Challa smiled at the contact before nodding in agreement. As they pulled up to the restaurant, Alix noticed some women in simple black dresses and shaven heads waiting outside. T’Challa opened the door for her, he nodded in the direction of the women, confirming Alix’s suspicions that they were Doras.
They entered the restaurant and the hostess immediately recognized T’Challa and led the two of them to the back of the restaurant, which was already fairly empty despite the time of the evening. Alix held on to T’Challa’s hand and said
“ I mean I knew you were important, but never did I imagine being in a near-empty restaurant that is being guarded by your nation's most powerful warriors”
“Does that scare you?” He said, slowing down and looking at Alix.
“No, but it is just a bit strange if anything. I forget this is what your normal life is like. And reminds me how much you keep it away from me and I will be getting more exposed to once the baby is here”
“I hope you know I will try my best to maintain your sense of normalcy and independence. But let's not worry about that until later okay” T’Challa finally turned back to the hostess who held a door open for them. Once they were in, a huge smile covered his face as he let go of Alix’s hand and walked over to Shuri who he greeted by doing their handshake.
“It took you long enough brother. I was starving.” T’Challa sarcastically rolled his eyes still smiling before going over to his mother and hugging her and kissing her cheek.
“Hello Mama, I am sorry for being late. Though I have a good reason and she is standing over there” T’Challa held his mother’s hand and guided her towards Alix who was trying to portray the normal level of confidence she usually possessed.
“Mama, Shuri, this is Alix Ajayi”
“It is lovely to meet you Queen Mother”
“It is nice to finally meet you too. I have heard so much about you” She said pulling Alix into a hug.
“Yes, brother literally never stops talking about you. Like ever” Shuri said before hugging Alix who quietly laughed as T’Challa struggled to hide his embarrassment.
“I have other matters I discuss”
“Yes, but your favourite is Alix and the baby.”
“Maybe we should all sit now,” Ramonda said as the siblings stopped their bickering. Alix took a seat next to T’Challa who casually placed his hand on her thigh. He had become more physical with her as time went on, but for some reason, she was letting her boundaries fall and couldn’t find it in her to do anything but enjoy it.
“Alix you look beautiful by the way. You are absolutely glowing” Ramonda complimented
“Yes, your outfit is amazing. The colour red looks lovely on you” Shuri continued
“Thank you both”
“So how far along are you now?”
“I am six and half months. More than halfway there” Alix replied smiling at T’Challa
“That’s less than three months. So am I having a niece or nephew because I have a few name suggestions for both” T’Challa decided to answer for Alix.
“Actually Shuri, we do not know. We are keeping it a surprise”
“Why?”
“Yes why Alix, I have been asking T’Challa for weeks and still nothing. I was telling him that I have some baby designs I would love to get started on”
“I know you all find out quite quickly, but I have just decided to wait and find out when the baby is here.”
“Plus either way we will love the baby, and its sex does not matter. And mama you can make clothes after I promise” T’Challa said knowing Alix did not feel like sharing her reasoning with anyone so he did not mind keeping his family out of the loop on this one. He was just happy that he was able to see the three most important women in his life sitting together. Food was brought out and everything seemed to be going well.
“Alix, do you have any siblings?” Shuri asked.
“ I actually have a younger brother. His name is Jules. He is really funny but has a big heart. We have a big age gap like you and T’Challa.”
“ Is he excited to be an uncle like Shuri here cannot wait to have the baby in her lab”
“I am hoping the baby will be as smart as me even though I am smarter than their Baba”
“I allow you to think you are smarter”
“Your designs and projects would beg to differ” Alix laughed at the exchange, it reminded her of Jules. She also loved how relaxed T’Challa was around his family, his smile appeared brighter
“ My designs and projects are just as good as yours little sister”
“Yet somehow remain archaic and lack swag”
“Shuri” Her mother warned as T’Challa smirked at his sister’s scolding. “Anyways, what about your parents Alix, how do they feel about this ?”
“They were both a bit apprehensive but they are now excited to be grandparents, especially maman. And she loves T’Challa. They are always gossiping to one another”
“Of course they are, Brother loves drama, but pretends he doesn’t”
“It is not pretending if it is true” All three women laughed at his statement knowing he was lying.
“Brother you know there is a new season of Golden City Housewives”
“Hmm, interesting” T’Challa said nonchalantly although everyone knew he was already scheduling time to watch it later.
“What about your father, how does he feel about everything?” Both T’Challa and Alix looked at each other trying to find the right words to describe Tolu’s disdain for T’Challa and his involvement in Alix’s life.
“Umm, he is coming around slowly”
“Well, at least he and Baba have something in common” Shuri said as she avoided her brother’s piercing eyes. “Anyways, I have to know, what in Bast name attracted you to my brother”
“Shuri!”
“What I need to know, she is dating him” T’Challa and Alix again turned to each other.
“Actually, we aren’t dating, right now just focused on bringing this little person into the world,” T’Challa responded as Shuri looked at them skeptically.
“You are kidding right”
“No we're not, your brother and I are taking this slow”
“Not with all that hand holding your not” Alix immediately let go of T’Challa’s hand. T’Challa looked a little hurt but wasn’t shocked by Alix’s reaction.
“Why don’t we get dessert and then Shuri and I can start heading home.” Everyone awkwardly agreed before calling the waitress over.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ride home did not lose its awkwardness and at home was not different. They got home late so Alix assumed they would just go to bed. But T’Challa never showed up. So she rolled out of bed and headed to the living room where only the light from the television was illuminating the room. She found T’Challa eating the cheesecake that he made the waitress pack for him, totally absorbed by whatever he was watching. She slowly approached him and he turned to look at her. He paused the tv before speaking.
“I thought you were sleeping”
“ No I was waiting for you but you never came” Alix took his plate to the kitchen and added a slice of cheesecake and another fork before coming back and sitting next to T’Challa. “What are you watching?”
“Golden City Housewives” Alix turned to look at him as he tried to hide his smile.
“You are so predictable sometimes”
“The housewives of Birnin Zana are much different from the Americans yet hold the same level of dramatics. It is good research. And I had to see whether Bugani ever confronted Akhona about not choosing her restaurant as the location for her gallery” Alix laughed as she took a bite and laid her head against his shoulder. T’Challa noticed and smiled, “Fair warning Alix, all this contact may cause the TV to think we are a couple” Alix lifted her head to face him
“I didn’t mean to make you feel like-”
“I didn’t feel anything. I wasn’t surprised. You do this quite often and that is okay. I wish you wouldn’t but I understand that is all confusing to you” He said in between bites.
“ And this isn’t for you?”
“I came here knowing I wanted to be with you Alixandre. My time here has only turned that want into a need. I am just waiting for you to join me. I don’t mind waiting” He said before turning back to the television, leaving Alix to take in his face and marvel at the man who made her question every move that she made while also allowing her to be as carefree as she pleased.
“ Your mother is very sweet, yet she has a serious aura about her. I can see where you get it from. “
“Mama can be serious when she wants yes, but she definitely is often my comfort. It has really helped me to have her on my side during all of this”
“ And your sister is a firecracker. She makes me laugh”
“Yes, I saw how hard you laughed when I was the bud of the joke.” Alix giggled “But yes, despite the age gap, she sometimes is my best friend.” T’Challa ended with a smile, “I think it went well though. Shuri told me she really likes you”
“And your mother”
“She said she understands why my father had so many headaches dealing with you and she admires your persistence and sense of self”
“Hmm I like that, you think the worlds are starting to merge?” she asked while putting down the plate and leaning back on his shoulder.
“They have definitely moved closer,” He said, kissing her hand before closing his fingers around hers. Alix smiled and kissed his shoulder in return. T'Challa started to feel like a need as well. She didn’t know how to feel about it but was happy T’Challa was willing to wait for her to figure it out.
