here's a snip from my au of the bear but it's a character study on alex (spoke about it a bit during a wip game here). this is chef alex aka carmy!alex:

Alex dices and slices and chops and juliennes, the top edge of the knife digging into his index finger and leaving a deep pink indent—physical proof of his hard work. Something tangible to hold on to, as real as the vegetables neatly stacked in front of him, as true as the erratic pulse he can feel in his fingertips. He leans into the sharp pain, his wrist aching and finger throbbing from the speed. His back is curled into himself, crowding his body over the kitchen counter, errant curls falling into his eyes as his knife moves at lighting speed, struggling to keep up with his racing thoughts. "You gotta come home, Alex." Alex's knife picks up at a punishing pace.  “Mom needs you. I need you.” Everybody wants something. He's not sure how much he has left to give, to slice off of his heart and serve up. Ugly presentation.

Joel’s watch has been a focal shot or an understood in every episode, and every time, it has been directly with Ellie or associated with her in some fashion, and I think it shows their evolution in a way

Episode 1 ^. Obviously, their scene in Joel and Tess’ apartment. His watch broke the minute Sarah died, so for Ellie to say “your watch is broken” is most likely what brings up his nightmares easier that night and him mumbling in his sleep. Bringing up those failures yet again, as his biggest failure is physically on him at all times. As much as it probably surprised him, I’m sure it annoyed him more than anything because why did she have to point it out? But idk interpret how you please cause I’m not the expert here

Episode 2 ^. Saving her from the clicker in the museum, pushing it back with this forearm and his watch being directly in the light of her flashlight. It’s really impossible to be missed. The protective instinct kicks in, trying to push the clicker away from her and closer to him, letting it get very close to his face to keep it away from her

Episode 3 ^. Seatbelt <3 They’re closer at this point, Joel literally willing to reach across her to grab her seatbelt, pull it out in front of her to show her, and repeat the word to her. He didn’t have to. He could’ve just grabbed his own and yanked it out in front of him so she could follow suit, but no. The man who aggressively yanked his hand away from her like 3 days prior was now obnoxiously close to her, like personal space is nonexistent at this moment, and showing her how to be safe.

Episode 4 ^. Them giggling together. This hand was up by his mouth every time he went to sleep. Maybe a subconscious thing he did to keep Sarah close to him. Maybe that’s reaching, idk. But Ellie being the reason he’s giggling and then having his watch right there as he giggles and tries to conceal his laughing makes me feel fuzzy and I wish I could better articulate why

Episode 5 ^. While not directly on screen, it is insinuated. Him watching Ellie be a little kid with Sam and play soccer, of all things (as we know Sarah was a soccer player). Joel has probably sat at a distance before and watched Sarah goof off with a soccer ball with her friends. Even if he hasn’t, he’s being reminded of her so heavily in this moment. This kid he’s really starting to care for is there, laughing and being a kid with another kid, and playing makeshift soccer. For a moment, he’s brought aback

Episode 6 ^. This was a hard one bc their outfits the whole time are winter, so his watch isn’t in any scenes. It’s in his scenes with Tommy when his big coat is off, but otherwise it’s hidden. But after the ranch argument and he thinks back to Sarah, this is what’s focused on. He’s remembering Sarah, of course, but I think a hint of Ellie is there. A wanting to take her back. A what could be. How much he misses his daughter and has a prime opportunity right in front of him to get her back. Someone on here pointed out, and forgive me I cannot remember who it was but all credit to them for pointing this out and I am 100% going to butcher what they originally said, but when Joel thinks back to Sarah’s face at their table, she looks…disappointed almost. Maybe that’s the internal conflict Joel is having with himself in this moment. What he said to Ellie isn’t true and he knows it. But because of his failure and knowing he’ll get her killed, he has to push her away. But when he thinks back to Sarah, she’s disappointed. Your second chance is right there. Go and take her back. Despite what you think, this is your chance to not fail. To not fail me again.

Episode 7 ^. Again, not directly shown, but insinuated. This is, after all, the hand his watch is on. And I think her holding this specific hand and all this connection between them being made through his watch hand is special. Don’t ask me how it’s special as I’ve done my analyzing for the week, but it’s something. It’s special. It’s the depth of their connection and the love they both have for each other. That both of them now know how much the other does

And of course episode 8 ^. And I feel I know what the shot will be in episode 9 and it’s gonna be painful if I’m right. But again, focal shot. Showing where they are, how far they’ve come. He is holding her now. To bring repulsed by her and annoyed and reluctant and tired with everything about her, he’s holding her against his neck to comfort her. Eyes are closed, taking her in and feeling the relief that she’s alive after running through this town looking for her. How his little girl is okay

#might have to change the url bc I’m in my collard era lol #my day was alright #I ate some shrimp curry that I’d accidentally left out all night and was fine bc I’m a scavenger of a person #then bc I started to feel PMDD fatigue I laid in bed with great elan til my shift started #then I spilled coffee all over my work clothes bc I stuck it in a very sketchy travel mug someone left in our house at the last party #and I listened to Screamin Jay Hawkins on the ride to work which was fun #work was a bit chaotic but uneventful and got to spend a huge chunk of it outside #it seems I have way better ball control than I did when I was a kid. whyyy now. i was such a loser I could have used some athleticism #but I’m so glad it’s the weekend so I can go palliative care mode which is what I call my lizard brumation pmdd phase #and stopped by a friend’s house after work which was nice #really rejuvenating #then made a sort of weird frittata w/ beets peppers and potatoes bc I was too tired to actually cook #watched sense and sensibility 1995 and really liked it although I found myself wishing for a bit more anguish. sorry #and I think I might set out one of the frozen almond croissants to proof overnight so I can bake it for bfast tomorrow #will go for a very short swim but probably only about 30 min bc of aforementioned fatigue. then pick up yogurt and a silly little treat #and will have ****** and **** for dinner either tomorrow or Saturday which will be nice #but really hoping Saturday because **** **** ** **** lol #and then Sunday I’m trepidatious about because **** was like what are you doing Sunday and I’m like well I guess having a fraught and #difficult conversation about our dynamic! lol #I’m very lucky to have proactive friends who are good communicators. truly I do not deserve his kindness. but like. god. let me retreat and #lick my wounds! #i shan’t get into it. but just know I know how S&G felt #and then another work week but I’m starting to really get a feel for the routine and what works and what doesn’t #and I’m excited for my next few meal preps we got millet and kale gratin #and a Lebanese chickpea dish the name of which unfortunately escapes me atm #but my mouth is watering thinking about it. saw a vid and was instantly influenced and went to the pantry to see if I had the stuff and I #dooooooooooo #and I do feel like I’m beginning to get past the worst of [event] and its sadness

#ive been running around stuck on Babysitter Duty for the past three days and the teacher only gave us any instructions on thursday yet #somehow expected a full paper done and edited by sunday. even if i wasnt stuck on babysitter duty she'd get a shitty paper just due to how #little TIME that is to get things done. but because i am on babysitter duty uhhh..... well so far there's no paper #ive been spending practically full days having to take care of my sister and i cant just Ignore Her so i havent done my paper while watchin #her because again: my focus needs to be on Her. and shes incredibly loud which makes it super hard to focus. fun combo /s #so i was like 'i'll just stay up Really Late and do it then' but that hasn't worked because my sister WONT GO TO BED if im awake. i was up #until 4am last night hoping she'd fall asleep and shut up and i could work but Nope! #and then i got too tired to even care anymore #i've tried explaining this to others and they're just like 'ok well you just need to find a way to make it work :/' which is very much #easier said than done! and im scared about this paper because this teacher doesnt accept late work at all for pretty much any reason #and im sure she wont understand my situation. because shes also the teacher that didnt understand that i didnt have the textbook on time #because it was still being shipped and i dont control the rate at which book ships and she was like #'..........okay well you still need to have the book by tomorrow at least <3' when i told her the book had Just shipped and idk when i'd ge #the dumb thing. so yknow i dont have high hopes about this #also just as extra 'make stuff more difficult' i have zero accommodations because my mom cant keep track of my fucking IEPs and they wont #let me have accommodations unless i have that and idk how to get a copy anymore. so i've also been running around with no help in that area #and it's not great </3 #idk im just stressed out and frustrated and i Want To Cry :) #vent

"Yeah Chris, I was really trying to capture the idea of seasickness in my - no, you dork, I'm just so, so, so bad at this."

Before her disappointment could grow roots (vines?) of its own, he turned his pumpkin around, patting its bulbous side as he joked, "I wouldn't know what that's like, carving pro that I am...see, I was going for nauseous, so...whaddya think?"

He saw it spark in her eyes a second before her mouth twisted, and by the time she was giggling, her hands too covered in slimy orange goo to cover the sound, he knew he'd won; "That," she said between snorty little laughs, "is the most horrific thing I've ever seen, please tell me you did it that badly on purpose..."
