These fine fellows are southern ground hornbills.
They are carnivores that hunt on the ground, walking along looking for insects and small animals. They are large and striking in appearance, and I was surprised to learn that their lifespan in the wild is 50-60 years. The birds are not mature until six or seven years of age, and they are very slow to reproduce. Slow reproduction, combined with habitat loss and other challenges, has left them vulnerable to extinction.
