As Sam Gilliam is one of Washington’s most eminent working artists, it is fitting that the GW Collection has acquired a representative sampling of the artist’s iconic works. "Uguisu" is the largest work by Gilliam in the GW Collection. This challenging composition is highly experimental, combining textural painting and sculptural relief. The title is Japanese for bush warbler (Horornis diphone), and the streaks of bright yellow allude to the melodious bird and its call. The apparent gaps between the work’s individual panels may be compared to rests in musical compositions.

　5月晴れに誘われて山形県小国大字大石沢辺りに行ってきた。 COVID-19騒ぎで山奥に避難と言う感じ。(^-^) 木々には新鮮な緑の新芽が溢れ、鳥たちが歌の合唱・輪唱・競唱でにぎやかだ。 　道すがらやっと静かになったと歩いていると、後ろからホー。 ホケキョ。もう一回ホーホケキョと澄んだ声で話しかけられた。(^▽^;) ウグイスさんが挨拶してくれている。有難いことだ。 　私も口笛で真似して挨拶をした。 約2分位、合唱と輪唱を愉しんだ。(^^♪ 　もう再び会えるかどうか解らないけど。もし、会えたらまた楽しい合唱をしよう。 ＼(^o^)／ 　 　May 3 2020

While strolling through the “Haru no Yama” at Jōnan-gū shrine, there were many Japanese bush warblers in the plum trees feasting on the blossoms. Can you spot them? From WIKI: Japanese bush warbler (Horornis diphone), known in Japanese as uguisu (鶯). It is one of the favorite motifs of Japanese poetry, featured in many poems including those in Man'yōshū or Kokin Wakashū. In haiku and renga, uguisu is one of the kigo which signify the early spring. In poetry the bird is associated with the ume blossom, and appears with ume on hanafuda playing cards.

いつも身近にいるのに、まったく撮らせてくれない子。

珍しく表に出てくれましたが、暗いわ、早いわ(^^;;

春先のさえずってる姿よりスマートに見えるウグイスでした(=^_^=)

(註)花女王聽到的鳥鳴，開頭就出現一直延續到最後的是聒噪的麻雀；中間穿插那段聲音婉轉的鳥鳴應該是日本樹鶯(Japanese bush warlber)，學名Horornis diphone，而日文名ウグイス就是由叫聲而來。
